04 Oct 2021The One About Sex, Burnout & Body Grief00:36:55

It felt like it was time to do a little bit of offloading and opening up in honesty about some of the last year and do it in a way that was vulnerable, unplanned and completely off the cusp (is it cusp or cuff? meh). With everything from looking back on healing, why support is best and the problematic behaviour I recognized, hiring help, sex, body grief and the burnout epidemic. I hope today’s episode inspires us to get honest with our emotions, recognize and be candid about burnout, get real about sex - or no sex and why motherhood is SO different this time around.

We discuss Mike’s journey through their experience with gender, as well as how to be a better ally (like what do we do if we mislabel someone with the wrong pronouns?). 16 Aug 2021The One About Community > Charity With Mamas For Mamas Founder Shannon00:34:29

After her father’s sudden passing, Shannon was left with an inheritance that allowed her to take a community Facebook page into Canada’s first non-profit born and run on social media. Mamas for Mamas is a now a national charitable organization that supports mothers and caregivers (including men, trans, non-binary, and two-spirit clients in crisis) by providing ongoing support to individuals and families facing various poverty-related struggles. This includes emotional poverty. Whether needing support, or wanting to give it, Mamas for Mamas is meant to bridge the gap and make sure that no child or mama is left behind, if Mamas for Mamas can help it. This is an emotionally charged and honest conversation about how charity doesn’t solve poverty but community does.

06 Apr 2020The One About Reframing The Way We Think About & Treat Eating Disorders With Kyla Fox00:37:32

After we were both featured in the same article that went viral, I knew I needed to sit down and get some expert conversations flowing about dieting, recovery and how we can be better supporters in that arena. Kyla Fox has established herself as a visionary and innovator, when it comes to re-framing the way Canadians think about and treat eating disorders. As someone who struggled herself with an eating disorder, Fox identified care gaps and fundamental flaws in the treatment and recovery approach. Kyla is a Master’s level clinician with degrees from both the University of Toronto in the Master’s of Social Work program as well as an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Women’s Studies. Kyla is a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers and is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. She is also a member of the Academy of Eating Disorders and the National Eating Disorders Association. With such deep and varied experience in the field, Kyla is regularly called on by Canada’s top media outlets as a special commentator on a broad list of topics, including: eating disorders, self-esteem, women’s health, body image, pregnancy and body confidence and more. Kyla and The Kyla Fox Centre were also recently highlighted on Gwyneth Paltrow’s highly acclaimed lifestyle website Goop.

What was a mutual decision, combined with a celebratory get well cake and sharing on social media about Shane getting a vasectomy turned into a wild ride of misconceptions, accusations and a news story we did NOT expect to be a part of. Facing backlash over a vasectomy was shocking, but not as shocking as some of the widely spread fears around a vasectomy. So we sat down, with covid, and shared the experience, taking on listener questions as well!

Her story, while ever-evolving, has also brought so many lessons and life tools along with it, which we’re so glad she could share some with us today. Meredith is a shining light, and her career is truly one to watch and be inspired by in all its “scrappy” ways from the get-go, like seeing a lack of representation in inclusive styling...and then doing it herself...on TV! Makes you wonder when you see yourself missing from a space, how can you show up in it? And maybe, with a story like Meredith’s, believe that you can. 09 Mar 2020The One Where We Discuss A Commonly Undiagnosed Disorder with Leslie Mosier (aka Doug The Pug’s Mom!)00:47:26

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, and it felt important to bring this topic to the podcast. With the diagnosis of endo taking often up to a decade, and too often it’s symptoms being called “normal” this was an opportunity for us to learn from another’s story so we are encouraged to become advocates for ourselves and our health. That’s where Leslie comes in. She’s young, cool as hell, and the mom to the world’s most famous pug, Doug. Her life is absolutely insane, from red carpets, a toy line, super bowl commercials and then to suffering in pain with this crippling disorder. Leslie shares her experience with endometriosis and how online community helped her along the way, and why she hopes to continue to spread awareness, including through music and her own online platform.

10 Apr 2023The One About Early Menopause & Life After Cancer with Georgie Swallow00:45:19

As a young woman, Georgie faced cancer twice. Her body changed before her eyes, as she was faced with the battle for her life all while being congratulated for her thinness (we know, we’re rolling our eyes too). Diet culture and health intersect in Georgie’s story as she shares the lessons she learned from her fight with cancer, including the ebbs and flows of a body and a purpose BEYOND just losing and gaining weight - while also admitting, it’s not always been so easy. We also discuss the great lack of information around menopause, especially for younger women who have no idea what to expect and how to prepare for what’s to come.
