The final day on the trail for GoXplorUSA on the KAT was full of different xplorations including an amazing waterfall called the little Niagara of the south, some original KFC, a great campsite right on the river, use of HipCamp and a dinner worth remembering.

There are many things my wife does not like, but most definitely the things she likes the least is being cold.  She abhors cold weather.  She works all day with a heater on year around.  I am close but not quite as bad.  When camping you cannot always find a warm spot.  They are rare, but there are things, some special gear that are able to help keep you warm when experiencing harsh climates.

This comes up a lot on Social Media. Someone posts an amazing photo of an amazing place.  Many people would love to know where this place is.  A question is asked..."do you have the cords for this place?"  "Do you mind sharing where this is?"  Most of the time those questions never get answered, but a few times the response is..."it would be better if you discover places like this for yourself."  The reasons behind this are many.  One being that some do not want their favorite spots flooded with vasts amounts of others and then the second would be the legitimate response to the question..."You need to discover these places for yourself."  What is the best way to handle this?  My wife and I experienced this recently and it came to mind...a thought I thought I would share.

Every summer I moan these words, "I am so sick of being hot, I am ready for fall…bring on the cooler weather!" Summers in Arkansas are brutal. The humidity is so high so the heat index rises above 100 degrees on multiple days each year. You do not want to go outside and would just rather stay wherever there is Air Conditioner. Fall comes for about 1 week and then it gets cold. Every winter I moan these words, "I am so sick of being cold, I am ready for spring…bring on the warmer weather!" It is a constant cycle of begging for something different. Come on spring!

Overlanding is not considered a hobby, and for good reason. Yes, we do have collections of certain things that we love and cherish. The 18 coffee makers that dawn the shelves in our kitchen and the countless number of antique Coleman stoves in my garage are proof of that. That is a hobby. But when you put all of pieces together, Overlanding is known more and considered more as a way of life than a hobby. There are parts of it that are deemed an obsession or interest in our lives but collectively you come up with a beautiful lifestyle that many are being drawn to every day. We build our rigs, we buy the gear, and we research areas and routes and immerse ourselves into every nook and cranny of this lifestyle.  We join every social media group so we can see what others do, post questions when we have them, and keep tabs on events that are in our areas. But what makes this a lifestyle is not what we have, not what we look at and research, it is not how much gear we can collect or how much stuff we can pack into our rigs. What differentiates this from any other hobby in life is family. The people that we meet at different events. The good friends that we develop over campfires and propane fired dinners. Those that we take time out of our busy lives, and vacation at work, to spend time together. We care for each other. We live for that next time we can get together and miss each other when we are apart. We call often. We message or text daily or weekly. We plan together and enjoy this particular lifestyle together.  That is what makes Overlanding so special. The people. Those in our Overlanding Family.

Choosing the the right tent and bedding for your adventures is a big decision.  Whatever you choose in this category, keep trying until you get it right. It may take one time or it may take years, but your quality of life depends on it. This is not an investment you want to skimp, nor an area you want to cut corners. It truly is quality of life. I have learned that control and joy are connected. Loosen up that grip of control and let go. You have to let things happen. You have to be able to improvise, overcome and adapt without losing your cool. If you are going to enjoy this lifestyle, you have to come to the realization that you have no idea what you will get into or come across but in a great percentage of those, you have zero control, but that is ok. We are heading out to the Kentucky Adventure Tour with GoXplorUSA. We have much planning and organizing to do before this trip. This way of life has filled such a huge gap in my life that it's hard to answer this question. I'm not out to be the best or most well-known, I just want everything this lifestyle has to offer.

It was a perfect ending to a perfect week. So blessed to have been able to go on this trip with such great guys. After breakfast and a fun morning, we took FR 76 down into Angel Fire and then home. They say all good things must come to an end and it was so true with this week. Cant wait to go back and do it all again!

CleanUp and Organization

I love cooking in the outdoors but the cleanup and organization part I struggle with.  It seems like I just can't get this part of my kit down to where I like it, it is easy setup and take down and it makes it all enjoyable.  I am hoping sometime in the near future I will be able to master this part of my setup.

Well last weekend at Overland of America, we found out something on the Subaru...when you leave the rear hatch open (where our fridge, kitchen, pretty much everything is), the side marker lights on the side mirrors stay on the run the battery down. Back in the 1970's backpacking gear was heavy, bulky and very limited. It was not until Glen Van Peski took a trip with his son where his pack weighed in excess of 70 lbs where he decided he could make something that would do the same job but would weigh much less, allowing him to enjoy his time on the trail that much more. We ended the week last week with Show and Tell at our school! We brought the FJ up and showed the Middle Schoolers what we do and educate them on Overlanding Principles. Saturday we volunteered at the Arkansas Traveler 100 Adventure Race which was mind blowing. These racers are unreal cool. Now we have started the week of Rendezvous!
