17 Aug 2021 | Curtis Sliwa - NYC Mayoral Candidate & Guardian Angels Founder | 00:56:39
Curtis Sliwa is New York City’s 2021 Republican Mayoral Candidate. The general election will be held on Tuesday November 2, 2021. Born in 1954 in Canarsie, Brooklyn, to a Catholic family of Polish and Italian descent, Curtis opened the first recycling center in Brooklyn when he was 14. Known as the teenage “neighborhood junk collector,” he collected empty cans, glass bottles, newspapers, and scrap metal, storing them in his basement after preparing them for recycling. At 15, while delivering newspapers, Curtis saved a family from their burning home. He made three trips into the burning building and saved six people’s lives. For his heroism, he was named Newspaper Boy of the Year by the Daily News and was honored at the White House for his act by President Nixon. In the late 70’s, while working as a night manager at a McDonalds in the Bronx, Curtis formed a group called the “Rock Brigade.” The goal was to clean up a neglected New York City. To make up for a scarcity of police patrols, Curtis retooled the focus of the volunteer effort to fill the void in crime fighting and the group took to the subway. The 13-member, multi-racial team of volunteers became known as “The Magnificent Thirteen.” The group agreed to ride the subways between the toughest stops, without weapons, to help put a stop to the crimes occurring to citizens riding the subway system. These courageous volunteers would look for gang members who had been mugging straphangers in the subway and detain them for the police to arrest. Many times, simply their presence would act as a deterrent to illegal activity. As word spread of "The Magnificent Thirteen" and their heroic deeds, more rushed to join the efforts. On February 13, 1979, Curtis created “The Guardian Angels.” Volunteers of all ages go through weeks-long rigorous training, in which they learn martial arts techniques in order to defend themselves, enforce discipline, and make legal citizens’ arrests, all without the use of weapons. Men and women in "The Guardian Angels" are recognizable in their bright red berets and military-like bomber jackets. These unarmed volunteers patrol the streets and subways, often in groups, keeping a watchful eye over the city. Curtis began his media career in 1990, where he started as a radio broadcaster at WABC-AM. He hosted various radio programs on WABC, and in 2000, became the co-host of the long-running Curtis and Kuby in the morning. In 1992, Curtis received the prestigious Courage of Conscience Award from the Peace Abbey at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston for his work of establishing the Guardian Angels in major cities on every continent in the world. On this episode, Curtis shares his one way ticket to the “Theatre of the Mind”. He also shares his mayoral platform and life with his wife Nancy and their 16 rescue cats in a 328 sq. ft. Upper West Side apartment. 21 Jun 2022 | Gil Troy - Historian | 00:57:36
A Distinguished Scholar in North American History at McGill University currently living in Jerusalem, Gil Troy is an award-winning American presidential historian and a leading Zionist activist. In the Foreword to Troy’s book, The Zionist Ideas: Visions for the Jewish Homeland – Then, Now, Tomorrow, Natan Sharansky writes: “This magnificent work is the perfect follow-up to Arthur Hertzberg’s classic The Zionist Idea. Combining, like Hertzberg, a scholar’s eye and an activist’s ear, Gil Troy demonstrates that we now live in a world of Zionist Ideas, with many different ways to help Israel flourish as a democratic Jewish state.” Troy's latest book which he penned with Sharansky, is Never Alone: Prison, Politics, and My People. Recently designated an Algemeiner J-100, one of the top 100 people “positively influencing Jewish life,” Troy wrote The Age of Clinton: America in the 1990s, and ten other books on the American presidency. One leading historian called Age of Clinton “the best book on the man and his times.” Troy edited and updated another classic, the multi-volume History of American Presidential Campaigns, originally edited by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. and Fred Israel. He is now writing new essays on the 2012 and 2016 elections. Troy’s book Moynihan’s Moment: America’s Fight against Zionism as Racism, describes the fall of the UN, the rise of Reagan and the spread of Anti-Zionism. Jewish Ideas Daily designated it one of 2012’s “best books.” He appeared as a featured commentator on CNN’s popular multipart documentaries, The Eighties, The Nineties, and The 2000s. He has been interviewed on most major North American TV and Radio networks. Troy has published essays in the American, Canadian, and Israeli media, including writing essays for the New York Times’ “Campaign Stops” in 2012 and 2016. He wrote a weekly column for the Daily Beast, “Secret Lives,” putting current events in historical perspective, and writes a weekly column for the Jerusalem Post. On this episode, Troy shares his one way ticket to a “Free Marketplace of Ideas”. In the course of our sweeping conversation, he shares the importance of listening generously vs. listening censoriously, how racialism is spreading in America today where people are defined by the color of their skin and not the content of their character, and how the word “Zionism” has sadly become hijacked. Plus, Troy points to what every successful President should possess, why there were actually six George W. Bush presidencies, and the “secret sauce” of Bill Clinton. Gil Troy is just one of the engaging personalities featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. 27 Jun 2024 | Special Episode: Transcend Cruises’ Captain, Rob Jager | 00:20:08
I just returned from a magical week on the rivers of Germany as a guest of Transcend Cruises. Our stops and excursions included: Koblenz, Cochem, Boppard, Rudesheim, Heidelberg, Speyer, Wiesbaden, Wurzburg and Frankfurt. And I loved every second. As for Transcend, it’s a charter-only river cruise line with a fleet of its own purpose-built vessels. The company offers truly customized river cruise journeys with tailor-made itineraries and experiences for any kind of group. So for example, you can hold a destination wedding, or a corporate retreat, or celebrate a milestone birthday with family and friends, or really just about anything! On my sailing, the ship was chartered by the Porsche Club of North America with tailored experiences for car enthusiasts. And of course, there were plenty of cultural options to enjoy for the likes of yours truly. The ship I was on was the Advance and was 5 stars all the way – from the suite to the dining to the staff. Frankly, I didn’t want to leave! For more on Transcend, visit: https://www.transcend.cruises/ or tune in to episode 301 of The One Way Ticket Show where our guest was Matthew Shollar, Founder & Chief Visionary of Transcend Cruises. While on board, I had the chance to sit down and chat with the ship’s Captain Rob Jager, Head Chef Mihai Tuca, and Transcend’s General Manager, Carmen Mladenovic. You can listen to each of those conversations here on The One Way Ticket Show. On this episode, we’re featuring our conversation with Captain Rob. We cover the highlights one sees on the larger and smaller rivers of Europe, the allure of river cruising, his philosophy on leadership, what makes Transcend’s offering so unique, plus, it being the one way ticket show, of course I had to ask Captain Rob where he’d go on his one way ticket journey of choice (if you’re new to the show, that’s the premise of the podcast). Enjoy!

24 May 2016 | Russel Wong - Photographer | 01:13:02
A “celebrity photographer who also photographs celebrities”, Russel Wong is one of the most profiled photographers in Singapore and Asia. He enjoys the acclaim of being the first Singaporean to break into the notoriously difficult Hollywood movie industry, and is also among the elite photographers commissioned to photograph covers for Time magazine. From his beginnings in sports photography covering world record miler Sebastian Coe, Russel went on to carry out coveted photographic work for Nike, capturing luminaries including Carl Lewis, Mary Decker and John McEnroe. A Fine Arts degree in Photography from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles followed, and it was then that Russel began to establish a name for himself in international fashion photography, working for the world-renown Elite Modeling Agency. His celebrity fashion spreads for the Los Angeles Times opened the door to working with top celebrities like Joan Chen, Isabella Rossellini, Oliver Stone, Paloma Picasso, Michael Jackson, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Glenn Close, David Lynch, Bruce Willis, and Jackie Chan. In developing a signature style amidst this highly competitive culture of fashion photography, Russel strove to distinguish his work by re-defining and re-styling the images of these glamorous figures with greater depth, texture and imagination. Supermodels, designers and musicians soon populated his portfolio – Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valetta, Kenzo, Anna Sui, Yo Yo Ma, and Luciano Pavarotti. The establishment of his photographic studio in Singapore in 1989 brought in accounts with Raffles Hotel, Singapore Airlines, Cartier, American Express, Nike, British Airways, Sony, Visa, Compaq, Four Seasons Hotel, Nokia, The Ritz Carlton Hotel, the Development Bank of Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board, Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore Telecoms and Apple. Meanwhile, the success of his commercial work also began to draw the attention of leading publications, which all sought Russel’s work to grace their covers. These include the debut cover of Vogue Singapore, and international covers for Time, Fortune, Elle, GQ, Marie Claire, New York Times and Los Angeles Times. The allure and acclaim of Russel’s work draws from his ability to infuse his commercial accounts with creative elements, combined with a sensitive, thoughtful take on his subjects. This is clearly in the vein of the photographers he admires and appreciates – Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts. Such balance and versatility may be seen in Russel’s work photographing stories and fashion spreads for movie sets, such as Oliver Stone’s Heaven and Earth, and publicity shoots for Lee Ang’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Zhang Yimou’s Hero and House of Flying Daggers, as well as portraits of Asian movie starts like Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fatt, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi. Russel’s latest work in filmmaking has also been an impactful one, having recently attended the prestigious New York University Film Program, and with plans underway for directing his first feature film. To date, he has directed numerous award-winning commercials, from a Breast Cancer spot that earned him a CLIO award – the advertising industry’s Oscar equivalent – to commercials for Discovery Channel featuring Joan Chen, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung. Also referred to as “The Richard Avedon of Asia” by many, he was recently commissioned to photograph a set of portraits for the Prime Minister of Singapore. Today, Russel’s photography continues to make its mark both regionally and internationally. In its millennium issue, a top regional magazine voted Russel as one of the Asians to look out for in the next millennium. He is the first Singaporean photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum (Russel Wong: 1980 – 2005), and also the first and only photographer to be invited for the art residency at the renowned Singapore Tyler Print Institute. In addition, his art works can be found in public and private collections, with his “Bamboo Forest” print going for a record US$40,000 at a recent Christies auction in Hong Kong. Russel is one of the extraordinary guests featured on The One Way Ticket Show. In the podcast, Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they'd go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! 19 Jul 2022 | Tamar Haspel - Washington Post Columnist & Author of TO BOLDLY GROW | 01:10:15
Tamar Haspel writes the James Beard Award-winning Washington Post column Unearthed, which covers the intersection of food and science: How what we eat affects us and our planet. She’s also written for Discover, Vox, Slate, Fortune, Eater, and Edible Cape Cod. Together with journalist Mike Grunwald, Tamar co-hosts the Climavores podcast, which takes a good, hard, entertaining look at food’s impact on climate and environment. When she’s tired of the heavy lifting of journalism, she gets dirty. She and her husband, Kevin Flaherty, grow their own tomatoes, catch their own fish, hunt their own venison, and raise their own chickens. If she tells you a wild mushroom is OK to eat, you can believe her. And her book, TO BOLDLY GROW, will convince you to try it. On this episode, Tamar shares her one way ticket, with her husband Kevin, to Cape Cod, to eat “first hand food” -- where every day they eat one food they grew, hunted or fished. This entire journey is captured in her phenomenally written book, TO BOLDLY GROW, which we discuss. During the conversation, Tamar also shares the joy and satisfaction for continuously being on the steep part of the learning curve, why human nutrition is incredibly difficult to study, that there’s no taste difference between fresh eggs and store bought eggs, why gardening is even more local than politics, the best way to forage for food in a city, and more. Tamar is just one of the engaging personalities featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. 01 Aug 2017 | Chesher Cat - Photographer | 00:57:40
Chesher Cat began her creative adventures as a rock and roll photographer and journalist in Vancouver, B.C. shooting hundreds of concerts up and down the west coast, including groups such as Led Zeppelin, Elton John, the Eagles, George Harrison, and the Bee Gees, to name a few. She relocated to Los Angeles with the idea to do a book featuring art by musicians, believing that a person with one creative talent could also be equally talented in another. The result was the coffee-table book Starart, showcasing the fine art of Joni Mitchell, John Mayall, Cat Stevens, Klaus Voormann, Commander Cody, and Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones. Starart debuted in 1980 to rave reviews and was featured in publications across the country, including Rolling Stone, People and Playboy. Chesher produced art gallery shows of original works from Starart, with gala openings attended by the artists in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Laguna Beach. She then fulfilled her dream to work in film, freelancing as a still photographer, designer and reader before accepting a staff position at Cannon Pictures as the Creative Director in advertising and marketing. Her efforts were instrumental in garnering millions of dollars in foreign and domestic feature and video revenues. She left Cannon to start her own design company, and while retaining them as a client, she also provided creative advertising services to 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. and many independent production and distribution companies. Chesher produced and starred in Final Placement at the Tiffany Theater in Los Angeles, raising thousands of dollars for the child abuse charity, Childhelp USA. She also produced and directed the filming of a Mick Fleetwood concert in Coachella, CA to be released worldwide on DVD. She wrote her first screenplay in 2002 and has since optioned two screenplays. In 2007, Chesher returned to her rock and roll roots with the release of her coffee table Everybody I Shot Is Dead, honoring 48 musicians she photographed who have since passed away. In 2012, Chesher made her directorial debut with a short film adapted from her feature script, End of the Innocents. She followed that with Chuck E.'s Too Big A Deal, an experimental/documentary/photo essay/music video on musician Chuck E. Weiss. Chesher spent the summer of 2016 shooting The Paris Project - resulting in a limited edition book. And in December 2016 she co-produced, shot, directed and edited Adrianna Mateo’s music video Coney Island. Chesher continues with her photography exploits on a daily basis, while also working on producing her coming-of-age feature film, My First Kiss, inspired by her own experiences in the wild and wonderful world of rock and roll. Chesher's current project is Under New York City. In this episode, Chesher relays the story of her time in a Paris recording studio with the Rolling Stones back in 1979, and why she'd want a one way ticket there. 09 Jul 2024 | Tom Marchant - Co-Founder of Black Tomato, the award-winning, tailor-made luxury travel company | 00:51:24
Tom Marchant is Co-Founder of award-winning, tailor-made luxury travel company Black Tomato. Described by Harper’s Bazaar as “having a finger on the pulse of travel that is incomparable” his experience shaping the business in the US and the UK has enabled a deep understanding of different markets and his innovative mindset has been lauded across the luxury sector, notably as a Game Changer in the 2021 Walpole Power List and for the past six years as a Conde Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist. Recognized as a leading authority in the travel industry, Black Tomato’s world-renowned approach to bespoke travel, alongside pioneering travel products, like Get Lost, Blink, Bring it Back and See You in the Moment reflect the company’s unique ability to uncover rare ways in which to experience destinations and address burgeoning client needs. Their discerning clientele are inspired by handcrafted experiences designed to reflect every passion, obsession and desire, with an acute prowess in the family market – Black Tomato’s center of gravity – with immersive collections including Field Trip and Take Me on a Story, driving the company’s exceptional success in this sector. This creative ethos has led to Tom and the brand being consistently named best in class, including Conde Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2023; a Travel + Leisure World’s Best Tour Operator 2023; and 2023 Travel Brand of the Year as the Challenger in the industry at the Travel Marketing Awards. And most recently, Black Tomato was awarded as a Master of Luxury, Travel – in the Robb Report Travel Masters Awards 2024. An entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for travel was instilled in Tom from a young age, and it was channeling this that allowed Tom and co-founder James to identify a gap in the travel market for trips that were centered around experiences, and the pursuit of feeling, rather than destinations. With this in mind, in 2005, they founded Black Tomato, their aim being to create a business that reflected the needs and personalities of clients for whom the existing travel market had become moribund. Their innovative travel products and services began with - groundbreaking at the time - diving tectonic plates in Iceland, and this philosophy has fueled consistent growth of the business and has led to collaborations with leading global brands. These include fashion and automotive powerhouses, and in 2023, a first of its kind partnership with EON Productions (producers of the James Bond franchise) to create trips centered around the iconic history of 007, with the launch of James Bond-inspired European travel itineraries. Tom is regularly asked to provide commentary and thought pieces within the media and as a result he is regularly sought by brands, agencies and conference organizers (from the Financial Times Business of Luxury Summit to Bloomberg's Future of Luxury) to speak on the luxury and travel sectors. This has steered him to take a number of influential board positions at leading companies targeting UHNWs/HNWs. Taking oversight of the creative direction, product innovation, customer experiences and business development strategies, he continues to work with his co-founder James on driving the successful growth of Black Tomato and he is now regarded as one of the leading voices and authorities within the luxury travel space. Tom’s accolades and awards are numerous including: · Named ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ by the British Travel Industry Hall of Fame · Conde Nast Traveler - Named World's Best Travel Specialist in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 · Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 · Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2021, 2022, 2023 · The Guardian Future 500 List · Winner of Pure’s ‘Contribution to Experiential Travel’ Award 2019 On this episode, Tom considers two one way ticket options. The first is to Belle Époque Paris, where his great-grandfather was a noted gallerist. The second is to Iceland where he'd embrace the landscape, culture, attitude, light and adventure of the island. Apart from his one way ticket journeys, Tom covers the unique services that Black Tomato offers. We focus on: Get Lost, Bring it Back, Blink and the Journey into the World of James Bond. Tom also highlights where luxury travel is today and where it’s headed.

28 Feb 2017 | Artist - Donald Sultan | 00:48:23
Donald Sultan was born in 1951 in Asheville, North Carolina, received his BFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. He moved to New York in 1975. The work of Donald Sultan is voluminous and varied. Since his first one-man show in 1977, he has enjoyed a distinguished career as painter, printmaker, and sculptor. His extensive body of work has placed him at the forefront of contemporary art, where he has become best known for his ability to successfully merge the best of yesterday's artistic tradition with a fresh, unique approach to imagery and materials. Although his paintings fit into the criteria of a still life, Sultan describes these works as first and foremost abstract. The largeness of Sultan's compositions, huge pieces of fruit, flowers, dominoes and other objects, set against the stark, unsettling tar-black, eight-foot square background, dominate the viewer. He is best known for his lemons and fruit, and states that his subjects develop from previous work. The oval-blossomed charcoal tulips of the 80s became his immediately recognizable black lemons. Dots from dice have become oranges. What does not change with Sultan's work is the powerful statement his forms make. Sultan's work incorporates basic geometric and organic forms with a formal purity that is both subtle and monumental. His images are weighty, with equal emphasis on both negative and positive areas. Sultan describes his work as "heavy structure, holding fragile meaning" with the ability to "turn you off and turn you on at the same time." Sultan's still lifes have been described as studies in contrast. His powerfully sensual, fleshy object representations are rendered through a labor-intensive and singular method. Sultan has been given numerous exhibitions dedicated to his work, as well as having been included in a number of group shows. His work is included in the permanent collection of many prestigious institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A monograph of Sultan’s 30 year career was published in 2008, entitled, Donald Sultan: The Theater of the Object and in 2010, Sultan was honored with the North Carolina award, the highest award a state can bestow upon a civilian. Sultan is just one of the extraordinary guests featured on The One Way Ticket Show. In the podcast, Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they'd go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! Ishmael Khaldi was born in Khawaled, a village near Haifa. He is the third of eleven children. He lived in a Bedouin tent until the age of eight. He walked four miles (6 km) round trip to attend school and tended flocks of sheep. He said his family's ties with its Jewish neighbors go back to the days of the early Zionist pioneers from Eastern Europe who settled in the Galilee region in the 1920s. Ishmael earned a Bachelors degree in political science from the University of Haifa and a Masters degree in political science and international relations from Tel Aviv University. He served in the Israeli Ministry of Defense, Israel Police, and in the Israel Defense Forces as a political analyst. He said these encounters inspired him to become a diplomat. Ishmael began working for the Israeli Foreign Ministry in 2004.
