IFS and Shame and Addiction with Mary Kruger
00:50:54
On today's episode I chat with Mary Kruger, a lead trainer with the IFS Institute and one of the developers of the Level Two Addiction training.
Mary shares her own story of finding IFS and her personal experience of the healing power of its integration with the 12 step model.
We talk SO MUCH about Shame.
We talk about the 12 steps as a Spiritual Path and working with parts who have difficulties with 12 step programs.
We talk about addiction as 'disease' and where this idea comes from. Disease is disharmony; IFS restores harmony.
We talk about family and trauma.
We talk about the connection and shame reducing power of group work.
Mary talks about looking inside, even though a part may fear the badness and shame that may be found there, and the healing when we take back in who we are truly intended to be.
She says that curiousity and compassion are our biggest healing agents.

IFS and Climate Change with Steffi Bednarek
00:41:59
On today's podcast I chat with Steffi Bednarek, climate psychologist and author of the new book "Climate, Psychology, and Change."
In this episode we discuss:
Climate change as an unintended consequence of Western mindsets and culture
Individual and collective denial, distraction, and trauma responses to climate change through an IFS lens
The importance of acknowledging collective silence around climate change and our role in maintaining or addressing it
Bringing more awareness to exiled parts of ourselves and considering what therapists and practiioners leave at the "office door"
The challenges of action-oriented responses to climate anxiety and the need for holistic, systemic solutions are examined
Steffi invites listeners to get involved by having uncomfortable climate conversations and experimenting with new approaches
With over 25 years of work experience in systemic change and trauma therapy, Steffi supports individuals, organisations and teams to address the urgent need for regenerative change in ways that go beyond the mere correction of what is visible on the surface.

The Duality of Grief with Lara Krawchuk
00:45:01
On today's episode, I'm joined by Lara Krawchuk, a grief expert and IFS certifed therapist, to explore how the Internal Family Systems model helps us understand and tend to grief. We discuss continuing bonds, meaning making, ambiguous loss, grief-worthy losses, and unbraiding current loss from exiled trauma. While I have parts that avoid thinking about and discussing grief, Lara offers such a hopeful perspective on the grieving process and I'm so excited to share this episode with you.
Key Takeaways:
Grief is not about severing bonds, but shifting how we relate to them.
Disenfranchised grief, like the end of a relationship or loss of health, is grief-worthy too.
Grief invites us to explore the deeper meaning behind our losses and what they reveal about ourselves.
Grief is both/and -- we are allowed to feel both grief and joy.
Welcoming grief, rather than trying to "move on," is crucial for healing.
Turn towards grieving parts and allow them the space to be heard and honored.
The importance of "unbraiding" exiled pain from present losses: "Does the part know this is different from the original Exile is has always protected?"
Continued bonds with those we've lost can be a profound source of comfort.
Favorite Quote:"Self is not freaked out by grief. Self is an exquisite witness to all pain." — Lara Krawchuk
About Lara: Lara Krawchuk is the owner and clinical director of Healing Concepts in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and the co-founder of Healing Perspectives, a continuing education resource for helping professionals looking to heal themselves, help their clients, and heal a broken-hearted world. She is an IFS certified therapist and consultant, a speaker, adjuct professor, and author with a passion for supporting those living with grief.

IFS and Healing with Psychedelics with Nancy Morgan
00:54:36
On today's podcast I talk with Dr. Nancy Morgan, Certified IFS Therapist. Nancy wrote the IFS and Psychedelic chapter in the new upcoming book, "Altogether Us" which will be released around August 2023.
I spoke with Nancy on episode 47 when we focused her role as Director of LifeMoves Behavioral Health and Training Programs, a California agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness. Nancy introduced IFS into the training curriculum during the 2015-2016 year.
Today, we have a much different discussion. You may be here because you love Nancy and want to know and hear how she is and what is going on with her as she was recently diagnosed with cancer. You may be here and you do not know Nancy personally or professionally, you want to know more about IFS or you want to know about psychedelics.
Whatever reason brought you to this episode I am glad you are here, and I feel incredibly honored that Nancy shares her heart and story with us.
The first half of this episode is heavier around the history of psychedelics and the integration with IFS. Nancy shares more of her story in the second half, although it is weaved throughout.
I start recording as soon as I meet with each guest, and most of that beginning matter is edited out. I decided to leave our entire conversation just as it is.

IFS and Creativity with Sacha Mardou
01:04:19
I fangirl embarrassingly hard with Sacha Mardou, a brilliant comic who is using her gifts to show her own internal work in IFS. Plus, she has a lovely accent.
She hopes comics will demystify IFS, and she publishes a new IFS comic every week on Instagram at MsMardou. She suggests pictures and words give the reader a more immersive experience which I found to be true when I read Sky in Stereo.
She began drawing IFS comics as a way to process her own experience with her parts in therapy. Comics have helped her do 'parts work' and to "befriend the noise inside."
She gives a few recommendations (writer secrets!) to help us be more creative and disciplined. She describes art as "time spent in flow... and flow feels like Self."
Sacha's desire is to get IFS into the world. We are both in full agreement of that mission.
To get her books "Sky In Stereo, volume one and two":
Follow her on Instagram and check out these comics! A brilliant way to show, teach, and begin to experience IFS. I think you may even discover some trailheads:
On today’s podcast, I chat with Tanis Allen, a certified IFS therapist and longtime member of the IFS community. Tanis has been around since the earliest days of the model, and she just released a new book called The Self-Led IFS Workbook: Learn IFS Skills to Understand and Love All Your Parts published by Penguin Random House.
We talk about her early experiences learning IFS in the ‘90s, her work with clients struggling with suicidality and eating disorders, and what it was like to write a book that makes the model accessible to everyone. Tanis shares insights on how to begin IFS on your own, the challenge of translating an oral and experiential tradition into clear written steps, and her favorite exercise for working with stuck parts.
Key Takeaways:
“Your awareness is the beginning of Self.” Tanis explains how simply noticing what’s happening in your body or mind is the first step into the IFS process.
How do you know you’re in a part? Tanis breaks down how to begin this work, even if you’re doing it on your own.
“IFS is such a strong community… we sit in circles together and learn this together.” Tanis reflects on the power of shared learning and the influence of the “wise women” who helped shape the model.
Why she added her own transcripts of parts work to the book, and what she discovered about herself through writing them.
Her favorite exercise (the Four Drawing Exercise) and why it’s so transformational for working with stuck parts.
Favorite Quote:
“Clients will often ask me, you know, does this make me like a multiple personality person or something? And, you know, the answer is no, we're all made this way, actually. And it does feel kind of weird sometimes. But the more we do it, the more we practice it, the less weird it feels." -- Tanis Allen

Ecotherapy: Finding Self in Nature with Natalie Thomas
00:31:41
In today’s episode I chat with Dr. Natalie Thomas, a psychotherapist and philosopher specializing in climate distress and ecological grief. Natalie, a presenter at the 2024 IFS Annual Conference, explains how nature influences our internal parts and the role of Self Energy in healing, both individually and globally. We explore the connection between humans, animals, and the planet, and how slowing down to engage with nature can shift how we relate to ourselves and the world around us.
We discuss:
How can we reconnect with nature and access our self-energy for healing?
The concept of ecotherapy, which includes "walk-and-talk" therapy, inter-species healing, and other outdoor- and nature-focused approaches
How nature can be a third entity (triad) in the therapeutic process
Simple practices for connecting with Self in nature, including forest bathing and engaging the senses
Animals have parts too
What is “inter-species” healing?
Parts-driven vs. Self-led activism, and how inner healing can lead to more effective, compassionate, and sustainable actions
Climate Cafes: hosting a safe space for eco-emotional healing
One of my favorite quotes from the episode:
"When we’re in nature, we can access our Self Energy and our parts in a different way—it’s like being part of a larger ecosystem, both inside and out." — Natalie Thomas

IFS and The Enneagram with Joan Ryan
01:02:48
On today's episode, I chat with Joan Ryan, an internationally recognized Enneagram expert and Leadership coach. Fortunately for our community, Joan is also Level One Trained in IFS.
I have been looking for someone to talk to me about IFS and the Enneagram and was beyond thrilled when I found Joan.
Joan is a type 9 and I am a type 3 so we talk about these types a lot. We also talk a bit about type 8s.
Whether you are new to the enneagram or not, I think you will find our conversation interesting and informative. Like me, you may walk away with a desire to know more!
Find out more about Joan and get her amazing "Help me find my enneagram type' card set on her website here

IFS and Beyond Hopelessness and Despair with Jim Abrams
00:32:32
On today's episode I chat again with my first guest ever, Jim Abrams. Jim is a frequent program assistant at IFS trainings so he is well known by many. Jim emailed me checking in and sharing lessons he is learning, and we wanted to share them with you!
Outline:
1. When a problem becomes real.
2. Changing ones experience of the circumstances.
3. Holding and honoring parts who feel sad, grief, worry and joy simultaneously.
4. Sometimes we need someone else.
5. Polarities- Life is hard and life is joyful
6. It is scary to be hopeful.
7. Holding the parts who hold the pain.
Here is my favorite quote:
"We are not asking the part to be hopeful. We are asking the system to bring comfort and connection to that part so its experience of the circumstance changes."
On today's episode, Zsuzsi and I chat about how creative movement helps parts express themselves so we can get to know them better. Movement increases the Self to part relationship and gives us more access to Self energy. It enables us to witness parts stories and unburden parts pain.
We talk about the similarities between DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) and IFS. And the benefits of seeing behavioral analysis through parts language and the IFS lens.
Zsuzsi guides us through several dances- IFS is an experiential model afterall so what kind of podcast would this be if we didn't ACTUALLY dance?!
To see all the amazing things she is up to check her out here:
EVERYONE is talking about the new movie Inside Out 2 and we wanted to share our take, too! I'm joined by fellow podcaster and IFS therapist, David Polidi, to study the movie from an IFS perspective, name our favorite parts (no pun!), and debate which characters and elements represent Self.

IFS and Shame with Mike Elkin
01:22:03
Mike Elkin is sorta famous. Well, I think he is.
Mike is a lead trainer for the IFS Institute and, before meeting him and then working with him as a program assistant, I had heard him quoted time and again from other students and his fellow trainers.
So, I was thrilled to meet him and more thrilled how we hit it off. I adore him as I think you'll be able to tell. Mike is all over the place, as you'll be able to tell, which is good for us because we get to cover many topics and get lots of 'Mike-isms.'
Here are few:
Shame: my badness witnessed
Moral Meaning: my need to be a good person
Alcoholic belief system (whether you or family ever actually drink): A good person is a person without flaws or limitations
Addiction: We need relief from shame (especially if our family had an alcoholic belief system) and get attached to whatever gives us that relief. This 'parts' strategy' gets imitated over and over again as a way to help us feel relief.
Protectors don't protect. They energize and attract whatever they are trying to protect against.
Receptors: follow the activated part and heal it so there is no longer a receptor for it.
Couples fight about one thing: who is the better person. Each one has their 'innocent victim story.'
Migraines/physical pain/back pain: Talk to the part who generates the pain.
Panic attacks: almost all panic attacks are phobic reactions to unaware triggers. Mike has a 'phobia protocol' he uses that is a mixture of his history with hypnosis and IFS.
Despair: parts feel relief when they stop the try-fail-shame-give up cycle. They can see Hope as a threat, Despair as a resource.
Lastly, You will also hear how Dick and Mike met and how Mike finally was won over to IFS.
And, I assure you, if we are able to leave our houses this summer, I will be using his house to park so I can go to the beach.

Somatic IFS with Susan McConnell
01:05:05
On today's episode I speak with lead trainer with the IFS Institute, Susan McConnell. Susan recently published a new book on Somatic IFS and it may be my new favorite IFS book.
Here is an outline (all of the times are 'ish')
Check in-

Reconnecting Mind and Body, what disconnects us? - 25:00
Importance of Embodying Self- 33:00
Witnessing through the Body- 38:00
Body Systems- 43:00
The Elements- 55:00
At the end of each podcast I ask guests if there is anything else they want to cover. Typically, I cut this out but I LOVE how Susan processes this question so I left it in - 62:00
I start crying at the end too... oh boy.
I loved the meditation so much I made a separate podcast for that. Thinking you (and I!) can revisit that again and again.

IFS and Working with Children's and Parents' Parts with Lois Ehrmann
00:53:33
On today's episode I chat with Lois Ehrmann, a Level 3 IFS therapist and frequent staff member for Susan McConnell's Somatic IFS trainings.
Lois is a grandmother extraordinaire; I want to drop the boy off at her house for a week. Or, drop off all my exhausted, overwhelmed parenting parts.
Lois has integrated IFS and Attachment therapy with families struggling with trauma. She developed a narrative method to teach parents and children the concepts of IFS which has empowered children to use the method of Insight as well as Direct Access. She is now mostly doing training and consultation as she co parents her own 3 year old granddaughter.
I LOVED this conversation with Lois.
Update and FYI- We recorded this right after the Capital Shootings. I checked with Lois this week and she is vaccinated and back at home with her family.
Email Lois at loisehrmann@gmail.com to get copies of her INCREDBILE Parenting and kids workbooks.
I'd love to hear from you @ifs.tammy on Instagram, Twitter, and Clubhouse. Or, on The One Inside Podcast Facebook page. Don't forget to subscribe, like, follow, etc.

IFS and Self Led Civility and a lot of Funk with David Medeiros
01:00:45
On today's episode I chat with David Mederios, Level Two trained IFS therapist. David has been a program assistant for multiple level one and level two trainings. He has presented at several annual IFS conferences. He spent a year working with Dr. Richard Schwartz and co-presented their experience treating someone diagnosed with Schizophrenia at an annual IFS Conference. David collaborated on the production of Good Grief, which toured nationally.
David and I have a lot of a laughs throughout this '101' episode.
Here is a bit of an outline:
How we met and importance of Dance Parties
His presentation and experience with his patient with Schizophrenia
Drumming Lessons: asking for help and life lessons
His book. Civility and Responsibility. Working with Families struggling in Domestic Violence
His goal in writing his book- especially in light of the 2020 election, Capital Riots, and Covid.
The Foundation for Self Leadership Web series- He is co-leading the first one. STARTS 9/3/21
I tell a little bit about my upcoming book, "The One Inside: 30 Days to Your Authentic Self."
He plays the drums for us to close us out.
This is a 'funky' episode!
--------
To find out more about the upcoming web series with the foundation:
We talk about foods from Pennsylvania and the hippocampus. We talk about football and alternating bilateral stimulation. We talk about ego states and UFOs. We talk about gravity, energy and spirituality.
You will witness my shame over a scheduling error and how Bruce's accent helps my part feel connected and at home.
Psychedelics and Honoring Derek Scott with Michelle Glass
00:39:29
In this episode I chat with Michelle Glass, a certified IFS practitioner, licensed psilocybin facilitator, and author of Daily Parts Meditation Practice®. We dive into the fascinating intersection of Internal Family Systems (IFS) and psychedelic-assisted therapy. Michelle shares her expertise in using IFS as a framework for understanding and navigating non-ordinary states of consciousness, both with and without psychedelics.
Key Takeaways:
Non-ordinary states are accessible both through IFS and psychedelic therapy, providing deeper connections to our inner world.
IFS creates a natural "roadmap" for working with protectors, exiles, and self-energy, making it an ideal companion for psychedelic journeys.
Gaining permission from protectors is essential before engaging in psychedelic-assisted therapy.
Psychedelics can act as a "key" to unlocking deeper Self Energy and facilitating healing.
Grief and legacy burdens often emerge as trailheads in both IFS and psychedelic journeys, opening opportunities for healing.
Integration is crucial after any journey—checking in with parts regularly helps sustain the benefits and deepen the healing process.
Favorite Quote: “IFS provides for natural healing, so it can provide that transformation of the wounds, of our exiles, the burdens, and the shifting of roles of protectors." – Michelle Glass.

"Exiling firefighters is not working"- What if we welcomed their advice and wisdom?
Bridges
how IFS can Bridge the polarization between the addiction world and the psychological world

IFS and Intuitive Eating with Kim Daniels
01:05:43
On todays episode I chat with Kim Daniels, Level 2 IFS Therapist. Kim is a Clinical Psychologist, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and Emotional Eating Coach who's on a mission: to create an army of women who never deny themselves the food they love, who treat themselves with the compassion and respect they deserve, and who value themselves and their bodies. And who never. Diet. Again.
Doesn't that sound A- MA- ZING?!
I so enjoyed our chat about all things Intuitive Eating and IFS.
We check in until about the 11 minute mark and then jump into all the good stuff:
diet culture
set point theory
health at every size
polarized parts (restrictive and overeating)
why diets do not work- biologically

IFS-Informed Practicum Training Program with Nancy Morgan and Travis Shubeck
00:51:50
On today's episode, I talk with Dr. Nancy Morgan and Travis Shubeck.
Nancy is the Director of LifeMoves Behavioral Health and Training Programs, a California agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness. Nancy introduced IFS into the training curriculum during the 2015-2016 year.
Travis Shubeck is one of the trainees and students who chose to complete his practicum at LifeMoves. Travis is working on an IFS manual for case managers who work with the homeless population. Travis states IFS, "is an opportunity to get out of my head and into my heart."
Both Nancy and Travis speak about the power the IFS model in clinical supervision, in working with the homeless population who have been through trauma, and in preventing student/therapist burnout.
On today's episode I chat with Gale West, MA, MFA. Gale is the author of the IFS- and Akashic Records-inspired bestselling book, Money Come Dance With Me.
A certified IFS practitioner, she has 30 years of experience in IFS, has presented at numerous conferences and was in a consult group with Dick for 15 years. The first training was in her apartment in 1996.
A former psychotherapist in private practice, for the past ten years Gale has been providing individual and group coaching to conscious entrepreneurs and creatives inspiring joy, purpose and financial expansion while transforming their relationship to money and success. Also an artist, she delights in beauty and grand adventures.
I ALMOST titled this with 'delight with money'- but honestly, the theme that runs throughout ALL we talk about is DELIGHT in our whole life. Here is a bit of an outline:
The Self of Money
The Self of Business
The Burden of Money
The Lessons from her Strokes
The Joy of finding higher meaning in our Jobs
The biggest ah ha- My Body is Housing my Soul
The Importance of being aware of your Transceiver
---
Gale asks, Is my heart desire, my head desire and my soul desire aligned?

IFS and The Council for Indigenous IFS with Julia Sullivan and Gregg Paisley
00:52:35
On today's episode I chat with Julia Sullivan and Gregg Paisley, two of the authors of the Altogether Us book chapter on Embodying IFS with Native American Clients. They are members of The Council for Indigenous IFS, and this is the focus of this episode.
Julia Sullivan, MBA (she/her) is a social activist who integrates her Latina roots (Ralámuli descent), Indigenous spirituality, and all she gained from being one of the first Latinas to earn an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. After 30 years in executive leadership and organizational development, she now brings Self leadership to people using Internal Family Systems (IFS). She co-founded the Council for Indigenous IFS to create a forum for cross-tribal learning and resource sharing. Julia convenes Self Led Leaders, a global community of coaches and consultants bringing IFS-informed practices to business, as well as Cornsilk, which brings these practices to the general public. Julia relaxes with frequent walks around a lake with her IFS-trained husband, Chris, basking in the beauty of nature.
Gregg Paisley, MBA (he/him) spent most of his career in the private sector, working as a senior executive in SMB, NASDAQ, and Fortune 500 enterprise software and hardware companies, as well as in professional audio/video/lighting. An enrolled Blackfeet (Amskapi Piikani band), he is one of the few American Indians fortunate enough to have walked that path. Late in life he came to the epiphany that the only possible reason the Creator would shower such undeserved blessings and resources on him is so he could help others find their own blessings. Since retiring from industry in 2003, he has focused on creating jobs, increasing tribal household incomes, and providing social services (especially for under-served tribal children) on a large Montana reservation. Gregg is a member of the Council for Indigenous IFS. In his spare time, Gregg relaxes as a musician on keyboards and guitar. He stays connected to the land in both the Pacific Northwest and northern Montana.
We talk about:

Indigenous IFS Council history (5:00)
Communal Collective Unburdening worshop at the 2023 IFS Annual Conference (9:00)

Drawing On Self Energy with Sacha Mardou
00:34:26
On today’s episode I chat with Sacha Mardou, a graphic novelist and artist, known in the IFS community for her IFS-inspired webcomics. In her new graphic memoir, Past Tense, Sacha brings readers along on her deeply personal, years-long journey to heal trauma, uncover legacy burdens, and connect to her true Self.
She began illustrating her IFS and therapy experience privately in her sketchbooks. Those evolved into webcomics vividly depicting her inner system and healing process which she shared with the world through social media, and now in her new graphic memoir.
We discuss:
How her private therapy session sketches grew into webcomics and a book
How IFS can shift our inner world and multi-generational family dynamics
Breaking the chain of legacy burdens for her daughter
Sharing her family members’ private details and stories in her comics
Using comics to visually represent the complexity of therapy and inner healing, making the IFS therapy process more tangible, relatable, and approachable for many people
One of my favorite quotes from this episode:
"How many of us carry shame or trauma that isn't even ours to begin with? Legacy burdens, passed down through generations, shape who we are until we take the courageous step to face them." – Sacha Mardou
Sacha will join in a discussion hosted by Dick Schwartz and Jeanne Catanzaro at the 2024 IFS Annual Conference in a session called, Bringing IFS to Life, where they will discuss how Sacha's comics have helped demystify the IFS therapy process for clients.

IFS and Misophonia with Kresta Dalrymple
00:46:49
In this episode I chat with Kresta Dalrymple, a licensed marriage and family therapist, IFS Level 1 therapist, and certified brainspotting practitioner specializing in complex trauma and misophonia.
Misophonia, a strong aversion to specific sounds, can trigger intense fight-or-flight responses, including rage and physical pain. Kresta shares her personal journey with the misophonia and how it led her to create the Misophonia Freedom Lab, a space for exploring treatment and educating others on this often misunderstood condition.
She shares how Internal Family Systems (IFS) has been transformative in helping clients uncover the root of their misophonic triggers, often linked to legacy burdens or childhood trauma. We discuss the importance of attuning to protective parts, understanding the deep-seated pain behind triggers, and using IFS as a non-pathologizing framework for healing.
Key Takeaways:
Misophonia isn’t just an aversion to sound; it’s a complex trauma response rooted in the nervous system.
Using IFS as a trailhead can uncover deeper parts burdened by past trauma, leading to more effective healing.
Rage responses in misophonia are often protective parts trying to guard against pain; understanding them can foster compassion and relief.
"When we turn towards our triggers with curiosity rather than avoidance, we open up a path to healing."
How can we view misophonia not as a disorder, but as an invitation to explore deeper, unprocessed trauma?
Legacy burdens and inherited sensitivity can play a significant role in misophonia; IFS provides a framework for unpacking these connections.
Favorite Quote: "I like to think of misophonia as a really powerful trailhead. When we use it as a trailhead, we often find parts of us that have been forgotten, that are hurting, and that need attention. As we start to unburden those parts, the misophonia triggers get less and less." – Kresta Dalrymple
About Kresta Dalrymple: Kresta Dalrymple is a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in complex trauma, brainspotting, and misophonia. She is the founder of the Misophonia Freedom Lab, dedicated to educating therapists and providing a trauma-informed approach to misophonia treatment. https://www.misophoniafreedomlab.com/

Tenacious Parts: Befriending Grief, Anger, and Hope with Audrey Davidheiser
00:35:26
In this week’s episode I chat with Audrey Davidheiser, licensed psychologist and Certified IFS therapist and IFSI-approved clinical consultant about working with grief and anger through the Internal Family Systems lens.
We discuss:
How tenacious parts like grief and anger hold on, often because they feel they are protecting something important, like legacy or family loyalty. What can we learn by befriending these tenacious parts rather than fighting them?
How your cultural background can influence your emotional experience, and how you can work with legacy burdens in your healing process
Grief as a multi-dimensional experience – it's not just about sadness, but can include anger, regret, or even relief
Religious Grief and Trauma – how religious trauma can exile parts of ourselves, such as those feeling grief or anger, and the need for compassionate acknowledgment of them
All parts grieve differently and how to welcome all parts into the grieving process. How can understanding the different ways we grieve help us heal?
Honoring angry parts – befriend anger by understanding its role in protecting something important
IFS and Grief – how IFS uniquely holds space for grief
Favorite Quotes:
“It's not just that everybody grieves differently, but every part of you grieves differently as well.”
"Angry parts are there because they are protecting something valuable.”
About Audrey Davidheiser: Audrey Davenheiser is a licensed psychologist, certified IFS therapist, and the author of the forthcoming book, Wholehearted Grieving. She specializes in working with trauma survivors, with a focus on grief and spiritual abuse.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves with Jodie Benveniste
00:37:28
On today's episode I chat with Jodie Benveniste, an IFS-trained psychologist and author. Through her personal healing journey using IFS she discovered how fiction writing and storytelling can be a powerful path to self-understanding and emotional healing.
Jodie and I talk about her debut novel, Never, Not Ever, a YA romance that integrates IFS therapy into the story. We explore how fiction can serve as a safe space for transformation, why romance novels tap into Self Energy, and how the creative process mirrors the IFS journey. This conversation is all about the power of stories—both the ones we tell ourselves and the ones we read. I think you’re going to love it!
Key Takeaways:
“Parts all have stories, don’t they?” Jodie shares how working with her parts allowed her to embrace fiction writing and how characters in a novel are not so different from the inner characters we meet in IFS.
How does storytelling create a safe container for healing?
Story is a powerful adjunct to IFS therapy
“I had a teen part who made me watch a rom-com 20 times!” -- How reconnecting with her younger parts helped shape her writing process.
Teen fiction can support adult mental health, too!
Why romance is the world’s most popular genre—and how it invites readers to expand their hearts and tap into Self Energy.
What can we learn from the stories our parts tell us? Jodie and I reflect on how parts hold onto old narratives and how fiction can help us imagine new possibilities.
How fiction can invite teens to learn about and explore mental health topics, destigmatizing therapy and showing how healing happens.
Favorite Quote:
"So, to me, the healing process is story-based, and it is imaginative. At the core of healing is a reimagining. And that’s what we can do with story." – Jodie Benveniste
About Jodie:Jodie Benveniste is an author and psychologist who writes heart-expanding young adult contemporary romance. She writes about love and friendships, family relationships, wellbeing, and mental health healing, introducing readers to their amazing inner world and its incredible depths. She’s been a psychologist in private practice, trusted parenting expert, organizational consultant, academic researcher, and Chair of the Board of an Independent School. But, at heart, she’s always been a writer. She now writes entertaining, unputdownable and heart-expanding fiction that has healing at its heart.

Unburdened Eating with Jeanne Catanzaro
00:53:37
In this episode I chat with Jeanne Catanzaro, an IFS therapist, educator, and author of Unburdened Eating: Healing Relationships with Food and Body. We talk diet culture, internal critics, and the societal pressure to view our bodies as projects. Legacy burdens, cultural messaging, and our protectors shape our relationship with food and body image. Jeanne explains how healing these parts with IFS can lead to a more compassionate and Self-Led approach to eating and wellbeing.
Key Takeaways:
Diet culture is deeply rooted in legacy burdens; how can we begin to unburden parts influenced by societal expectations?
Many of us start the day with critical voices driving us—learning to identify and soothe these critics is a key first step.
Healing our relationship with food begins with curiosity, not judgment.
Self-led eating involves negotiating with parts and focusing on what your body needs in the present moment.
Unburdened eating is not a diet—it’s about building trust with our parts and moving away from perfectionism.
About Jeanne Catanzaro: Jeanne Catanzaro is an IFS therapist, educator, and author specializing in helping individuals heal their relationships with food and body. Her new book, Unburdened Eating: Healing Relationships with Food and Body, offers a compassionate guide to transforming these dynamics through an Internal Family Systems lens. In addition to her role in helping to lead the IFS Institute, she offers workshops and retreats on Unburdened Eating and IFS. www.jeannecatanzaro.com

Boo is a writer, artist, and performer whose work has appeared across various platforms and publications, including The Brooklyn Rail, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, and NPR’s The Moth. She has released three albums of original music with Big Deal Records.
I absolutely loved this book and the way she blended years of inner child work and IFS therapy to create the unique Parts perspective she uses to write the novel. She shares her process of discovering and relating to different parts and learning how to tell their stories. We identify legacy burdens, ancestral guides, and which character in the novel represents her true Self.

IFS and Parenting with Derek Scott
01:13:58
Today’s guest is Derek Scott... that is right! Derek of the famous IFS YouTube channel.
He and I act like we aren’t being recorded and won't have people listening to us chat away.
We talk about all the IFS things but parenting is the main thread which runs through from beginning to end.
We talk about our own exiles who affect our parenting and about those shaming firefighters who were around our own parents and now show up around us while we parent. Oh my.
Derek teaches the dynamic between power and apology and repair. We cry a bit about the grief of parenting as our children grow up and move through life transitions.
We discuss our own experiences with becoming parents which includes a bit of my own infertility journey. Derek wonders about a figure who is involved being a passenger, not a part.
Derek gives an example of how he teaches IFS using psychodrama. This opens up a conversation about firefighters and their important role.
He walks through how he helps heal suicidal parts.
Derek is warm and funny. This episode is packed full of information while at the same time being just a conversation between friends.
Enjoy!
*If you want more of Derek, and you will, my friends over at the IFS Talks podcast have had him on twice lately -- go check them out wherever you listen to podcasts.

Key Takeaways:
Self Help is designed to make IFS accessible to readers unfamiliar with the model, offering a gentle introduction to working with protectors.
Recognizing and respecting protectors can create a safe foundation for growth.
Manifesting through IFS involves healing belief systems and adjusting your internal world, creating freedom and alignment with Self Energy.

Befriending Addictive Parts with Mary Kruger
00:50:24
My guest today is Mary Kruger, an IFS lead trainer and therapist specializing in addiction and eating disorders. Mary helped develop the IFS Level 2 training for addiction recovery and treatment. This episode is a re-release from Season 2.
Episode Summary: In this episode Mary shares her own story of finding IFS and her personal experience of the healing power of its integration with the 12-step model.
We explore:
How can we shift the way we approach addiction, eating disorders, and shame?
Have traditional approaches to addiction recovery, such as AA or 12-step programs, left us demonizing our behaviors rather than understanding them?
What happens when we stop viewing addiction as a "moral failure" or "genetic defect" and instead see it as a system out of balance
What role does shame play in maintaining cycles of addiction, and how can IFS help us unburden that shame?
How can we learn to work with, not against, our addictive parts?
Can group work enhance healing by reducing shame and helping us feel connected to others with similar struggles?
Favorite Quote:
"What if we stopped demonizing our addictive behaviors and instead asked, 'What are they trying to teach us?' When we befriend the parts of us that struggle, we unlock the door to true healing."

IFS and Becoming An Ancestor with Derek Scott
00:40:22
Derek Scott and I got to meet one last time here on the podcast. I want to share with you what I know because a lot of you have asked. You will find out a lot in this episode from Derek himself.
I was among a small group who knew he was sick and when he was passing. After we recorded the episode I got to read his book and watch a session between him and Dick Schwartz, the founder of IFS.
If you haven't heard of Derek Scott, I invite you to go to YouTube and check out his channel. Many of us in the IFS community learned so much by watching his videos.
He and I recorded a full IFS session on video three years ago. He would text me periodically and let me know how many people had watched it. I just looked -- it has 70,000 views!
Derek ran an organization called IFSCA, based in Canada, which teach IFS courses. In all the years I’ve known Derek he is clear to honor Dick Schwartz, the founder of IFS. He makes it known that his courses are not IFS trainings. He was always careful to distinguish that and to be so respectful of Dick.
If you go to the podcast page on my website and search for Derek Scott, you will see several episodes we did together. Over the years he would text me and say, "Hey do you wanna talk about such and such?" I’d always say yes.
Here are all the links:
Full episode between Derek as therapist and me as client:
He was a friend, and I am so grateful for his presence in my life. The last text I received from him was a week before he died, and it was just this emoji … 🤸♀️
Sending you all so much warmth and compassion as you listen to this episode.

IFS and Richard Schwartz
00:57:05
Do you want the good news or the bad news first? The good news is here it is... my chat with Dick, the founder of IFS. Dick is personal and fun and funny. It is inspiring and enlightening. You will find out something new- about the beginnings of this model, about Dick's vision then and now, and about Dick himself.
I write long outlines of each podcast during the editing process. Some things on the outline for this episode are: what is the significance of the name 'IFS,' what he says Yes to, what weighs on his heart, what he does for fun, what he is proud of, and what he struggles with.
Of course, we cover aspects of the model: Self, parts, unburdening, polarity of parts, etc.
But that is not what will stand out to you.
Now, the bad news. Dick shares what he is watching on TV. Sadly, it is not on Netflix, it is on HBO. A part of me says I need to add that to Amazon. Thanks a lot, Dick.
You'll have to listen to this whole episode to find out the name of the show.
AND! To get a $100 off your own brand new website OR to check out all their available therapist resources:
Alison is a gifted teacher, writer and speaker, and we cover all the things.
We talk about her book, "Boundaries for Your Soul."
We talk about integrating spirituality and psychology.
Alison gives a beautiful explanation of our protective system (managers, firefighters, and exiles). Alison states, "When we peel away parts, Self is."
We talk about the enneagram (and how a part of me is having a hard time accepting my '3 ness'). The enneagram is like a personality test. Want to know more? See the links below.
Finally, we talk about practical tools to unblend from parts and to allow Self to emerge.
IFS and The Power of Healing Our Own Racism with Dorothea Hrossowyc and Ingrid Helander
01:15:05
On today's episode, I chat with Dorothea Hrossowyc and Ingrid Helander. Ingrid and Dorothea along with Tyler Haaren, Joya Lonsdale, Julia Sullivan, and Paula Shulman led a workshop on "Healing Racism From the Inside Out, Unburdening our Parts around Race and Racism", at the 2016 IFS Annual Conference, and were a part of the plenary session, along with Tyler, Joya and Donna Dellal-Ferme at the 2017 IFS Annual Conference titledSelf-Led Activism. Releasing Your Inner Change Agent.
I encourage you to listen and observe your own parts' reactions. Use these as trailheads to do your own work and meet the younger parts of you who hold pain.
They share their own personal stories and their experiences working with their racist parts.
What is said over and over is the power of the model to heal, and the importance of following the trailheads of our own racism to get to our exiles and our own ancestors and legacy burdens.
We talk about so much- indigenous peoples, polyvagal theory, classism, capitalism, grief and shame. And, we laugh... I promise.
Ingrid has an ebook/workbook that uses IFS and Polyvagel theory to help people with chronic worry. It is found at www.calmyourworries.com
She also will be offering a mastermind membership in 2021 to help people move from worry and self-doubt to calm self-confidence. For more information, sign up for her newsletter at Ingrid's website
Dorothea is available to work with you around Unburdening our Racists Parts or Parts Affected by Racism.
She also offers workshops on Working with Anxiety to Release Unconscious Limiting Thoughts, Working with Anger or Angry Parts as a Powerful Tool, Setting your Internal GPS... Your I-GPS, and Healing Parts around Boundaries. Find out more about Dorothea and her offerings at her website here
We talk about several handouts which you can get by contacting her. Email her to receive "The Concrete Work of Eliminating Your Racism" which is a list of trailheads at hrossowyc@gmail.com.
And, as always, come say Hi to me @ifstammy on Instagram and Twitter or at The One Inside Facebook page. I love hearing from you.
Enjoy.

Quieting The Storm Within with Ashley Booth
00:38:18
On today’s podcast, I chat with Ashley Booth, a psychedelic-assisted psychotherapist, trainer, researcher—and former oceanographer! Ashley’s new book, Quieting the Storm Within: A Simple, Intuitive Guide to Your Inner World, is beautifully written and illustrated, accessible, and deeply rooted in IFS.
We talk about why she chose to create a picture book for adults, how parts mapping can be playful and powerful, and how IFS and psychedelics both point us toward connection with our parts, with the natural world, and with something larger than ourselves.
Ashley shares her journey from marine science to healing work, the grief that led her there, and the awe and Self Energy that keep her grounded in the work today.
Key Takeaways:
“IFS is such a visual model.” Ashley talks about why she chose to make a picture book for adults and how dyslexia, digital art, and parts mapping all played a role.
What is the “parts unstack” exercise and how can it help externalize what’s happening inside?
“All parts are either the steward of a need or trying to get that need met.” Ashley walks us through her reframing of protectors as helpers and the importance of naming needs with compassion.
How her own psychedelic experiences influenced the metaphors in the book, and how IFS supports integration and meaning-making.
“Self is the conduit.” Ashley shares how visual reminders, art, and little moments of awe can help us reconnect to Self Energy in everyday life.
Favorite Quote:
"We all need to be able to connect with the love and the compassion that's available to all of us that doesn't judge. And our parts need to be held by that, right? And our Self is the conduit for that to happen." – Ashley Booth

Starting With Self with Ralph de la Rosa
00:36:45
In this episode I chat with Ralph De La Rosa, a meditation teacher, therapist, and author of Outshining Trauma. Ralph shares his personal journey of healing from PTSD, depression, and addiction, and how IFS helped him access Self Energy beyond traditional meditation.
Key Takeaways:
Self Energy and Buddhist concepts like Buddha-nature share striking similarities.
Meditation can be a powerful tool for parts work, offering a structured way to access Self.
What happens when Self meets our most burdened parts?
Self Energy as a reparenting force
Instead of rejecting painful emotions or defensive parts, he encourages holding them with warmth, like placing them in the sunlight of Self.
Trauma constricts and healing expands
Start with Self rather than diving directly into the pain.
Parts are just like people
Radical self-compassion as meeting every part of ourselves—including the ones that hold fear, addiction, or pain—with love, rather than trying to suppress or fix them.
Reparenting happens naturally when we turn toward our parts with compassion.
Favorite Quote: "One thing I’ve learned from direct experience of Self is that it can expand to be bigger than any level of heartache, any sense of brokenness, any sense of wounding, no matter how deep, no matter how wide, no matter how big. Self-energy can expand to fill the entire room you’re sitting in. If you practice with it, if you practice with it and your parts, we could begin to trust that." – Ralph De La Rosa
About Ralph De La Rosa: Ralph De La Rosa is a psychotherapist, meditation teacher, and author of Outshining Trauma: A New Vision of Radical Self-Compassion. His work integrates IFS, neuroscience, and Buddhist wisdom to help people navigate healing and transformation.

IFS and Living from Self with Loch Kelly
00:59:44
On today's episode, I chat with Loch Kelly, an IFS trained psychotherapist, a well known meditation and awakening leader, author of 2 incredible books, and all around super amazing, warm and friendly person.
Loch's approach to accessing Self is different then Dick's, and Loch suggests asking the F's, which we normally ask of parts, to one's Self.
Loch teaches us to ask: Who is aware and Who is the one asking?
Loch explains and then leads us in a meditation around, "What is here when there is no problem to solve?" You will find a copy of this in its own podcast to listen to on repeat when necessary.
I'd love to hear from you at The One Inside Facebook Page and @ifs.tammy on Instagram and Twitter. I'm also on Clubhouse now and talking to a few friends about having chats in rooms... friend-follow- subscribe... Connect :)

I take the guest’s seat as my podcasting partner and co-producer, Jeff Schrum, leads the interview. We reflect on six seasons of guests, the show's impact on my life and work with clients, and why unblending is the real magic of IFS. We also dive into creative projects on the horizon, including my new mini-book on numbness and launching The One Inside Substack community.
Key Takeaways:
Jeff and I talk about the fun behind the scenes of finding guests, editing interviews, creating show notes and graphics, and releasing an episode.
My favorite part of the IFS model, and how I use it in my daily life.
How six years of hosting this podcast has shaped not just my work, but my personal life and how I relate to my own parts.
“Unblending is the hard part.” We get into why unblending is the heart of the IFS model, and how simply creating space between parts can be transformational.
My controversial opinion on unburdenings.
“There are a million reasons not to do the thing.” We talk about parts that hold us back from starting creative projects—whether it’s a podcast, book, or blog—and how to work with them.
My likes and dislikes...like how I like unblending, and how I dislike when my parts won’t unblend. See also: maple syrup, apple cider, and movie theater popcorn.
"If I waited every other week to meet with my IFS therapist, IFS wouldn’t be in my bones. You have to be doing this every day. Even if it’s just small moments of awareness. That’s the work."
This episode is full of laughs, reflection, and some behind-the-scenes stories you haven’t heard before. I hope you enjoy it!

An IFS Update with Dick Schwartz
00:35:46
Episode Summary: On today's episode I welcome back to the podcast Dick Schwartz, founder of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. We had such an important conversation that I'm excited to share with you.
We begin remembering Derek Scott, who passed in February. Dick offers new details on the rupture and repair of their professional relationship over the years, and reflects on the moving final session they shared weeks before Derek's passing. (If you haven't watched the video yet, I highly recommend you do -- it's beautiful). Dick opened up about his concerns and the challenges of maintaining the integrity and safety of the IFS model while balancing the high demand for trainings. He also discussed his personal journey of integrating spirituality more into his writing and work. Dick shared his vision for the future of IFS, including continuing to expand its reach beyond traditional therapy and into leadership, education, politics, and articifical intelligence (AI). We ended on a fun and sweet note: he reminisced about meeting his wife, Jeanne, and the beginning of their relationship.
Key Takeaways:
Derek Scott's passion for making IFS accessible left a lasting legacy.
IFS continues expanding into non-clinical domains, including leadership training, educational systems, and AI-driven tools
How to maintain the "do no harm" ethos of IFS as it grows and evolves
The difficult decision to tighten IFS training admissions requirements
Plans for brinigng IFS more into the public domain
Dick discusses the potential of IFS to address legacy burdens collectively, envisioning a broader cultural impact.
Spirituality in IFS: helping individuals connect to guides and Self Energy in deeper ways.
Dick plans to be much more explicit about IFS in areas like spirituatlity and psychedlics
The IFS model's potential to transform individuals and society--a ripple effect
His version of the first meeting and long-distance courtship with his wife Jeanne (her version is here)

IFS and Adoptees with Kathy Mackechney
00:41:57
On today's podcast I chat with Kathy Mackechney, who wrote a chapter in Altogether Us.
Kathy is a relinquishee-adoptee whose purpose is helping other adoptees heal the burdens of having been relinquished, or removed, and adopted. She is a Level-3 trained, IFS-certified therapist and consultant wtih a private practice in Denver.
We talk about:
Helping adoptees feel heard and understood
Shifting language from adoption-industry and adoptive-parent-centric perspective to language that centers the experience of the person who was relinquished, and therefore needed to be adopted- hence the term 'relinquishee' or 'survivor of infant-mother separation'
Educating 'biologicals' about why adoptees should be recognized as a marginalized group
Why 'Not all Parts Get Adopted"
How Self gets exiled
Importance of using Implicit Direct Access
Possible Parts who may be found (Not me, Dismissed, sense of being alone, Relationship stressors, Control, Self doubt, Second quessing).

IFS and Belonging with Milena Worsham
01:04:01
On today's episode I chat with IFS Practitioner Milena Worsham as she shares her incredible story of growing up biracial in Texas.
Milena is a master story teller and I was drawn in from the beginning. I had this sensation of leaning in close as she spoke.
She states, "I grew up believing I was white.... This is a protection for the family... White is a protection. It is safe."
The first half of the episode is her and her family's story. The second half is about her connection to feminism and the performing arts. We talk about the womb and the legacy burdens we take on in the womb. We talk about family loyalty and family secrets. We talk about what we are 'allowed' to be as women.
I am not going to be able to tell you or share with you here the power of her story and her voice!
I decided to sum it all up with the "Belonging."
Just listen! I think you will walk about feeling moved and empowered.
Come say Hi to me at The One Inside Facebook page or @ifstammy on Instagram or Twitter. I would love to hear from you.
Enjoy!

IFS, Parenting, and Organizational Leadership with Seth Kopald
00:51:34
"Parts might be shortsighted from what Self can see."
In part two of our conversation, Seth and I talk about leadership in work and the organizations we find ourselves. Many of us are leaders in all sorts of ways in the office, in schools, in factories, in shops, and in the home.
Seth talks about the importance of having voice in organizations and the importance of relationship building and trust. We talk about curious leaders and shared vision, about how to be compassionate towards about our leaders' parts.
Seth finds several parallels between parenting and workplace leadership, such as power and responsibility.
And we talk a lot about the power, the freedom, the ease of Self leadership.
On today's episode I chat with Kylie Feller, a Canadian clinical counselor and Level 3 Certified IFS therapist specializing in complex trauma. We chat about two topics she's passionate about: parts journaling and dating. (Our dating convo begins at 15:50).
First, Kylie shares tips on connecting to our parts through journaling. Her book, IFS Daily Parts Journal, offers a structured method which she first developed as her own self-care tool. We explore how journaling can be a valuable way to check in with our parts, unblend, and create inner openness, and why it isn't always as easy as it seems.
Then we switch gears to explore dating through an IFS lens. Sharing personal insights from her experience in the dating scene, she shares how dating presents opportunities to notice trailheads, meet new parts, and practice Self leadership.
We discuss:
Journaling with our parts can be like having a self-led therapist, helping us track, check in, and create openness towards different parts of ourselves.
Resistance to journaling or parts work is common, and it’s helpful to approach these resistances with curiosity and compassion.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to IFS practices; journaling, singing, art, and even walking can be ways to connect with parts.
Dating offers a unique opportunity to explore our parts, activating trailheads that can lead to greater self-understanding and healing.
Kylie’s approach to dating with IFS emphasizes self-love, curiosity, and the importance of building internal relationships before seeking external connections.
The concept of trusting one's system and allowing for natural growth and change in relationships is key to healing through IFS.
About Kylie Feller: Kylie is a Canadian clinical counselor, digital nomad, and Level 3 Certified IFS Therapist. She has personally experienced the healing power of IFS and is passionate about helping others on their self-healing journeys. Kylie is the author of the IFS Daily Parts Journal, designed to help individuals connect with their parts through thoughtfully formatted journal pages. She is currently working on her next book focused on dating through the lens of IFS.
One of my favorite quotes:"Dating is like an experiment. Every encounter becomes a mirror reflecting back my parts, allowing me to get curious, speak for them, and ultimately, love myself more deeply." – Kylie Feller

I was thrilled when I found out about Gabby and heard her speak in such a clear, understandable way about IFS. I had to have her on the podcast and am so thankful that she was open to do it. And, that she turned out to be such a warm, kind, and lovely person.
It is amazing when we find people talking our same language outside of the IFS community and that is what I thought about Gabby.

You will hear from my parts who like to be dramatic and exaggerate. You will hear from the parts who respond to this with eye rolling and twitching. And, you will hear how sometimes just sitting in the middle of a sidewalk is the best choice.
You will hear my dog's squeaky toy in the background over and over again.

Widening The Circle: The Evolution of IFS with Crystal Jones and Pam Krause
00:34:37
On today’s podcast, I chat with two brilliant IFS lead trainers, Pam Krause and Crystal Jones. We learn about their journeys to becoming IFS lead trainers, the evolution of the model's cultural awareness and inclusivity, and what it’s been like to co-lead the newly updated IFS Online Circle together. We also dip our toes into a little controversy—should we skip the 6Fs?
I loved hearing from them what it means to stay grounded in the core of the model while continuing to expand and evolve with care, community, and curiosity.
Key Takeaways:
“The core of the model has not changed at all.” Pam and Crystal reflect on how the IFS model has stayed steady while the perspectives, voices, and applications have continued to expand.
How do different cultures experience Self Energy? What happens when we listen for joy, dance, chi, and loyalty as expressions of Self?
How the model is evolving as more identities enter the space, adding richness and context.
The 6 F’s: should we still teach them? Pam and Crystal give context, clarity, and some new language around how and why the F’s are helpful—especially for beginners.
How the model teaches the steps to reach clients’ protectors.
We also explore mentoring, teaching, and the beautiful full-circle (pun intended!) relationship Pam and Crystal have developed through years of working together.
Favorite Quote:
“People are saying how they want to see themselves in the model, right? They want to see how it applies to them. And if we are not aware of our clients' identities, then we might miss it if we're looking for the eight C’s.” – Crystal Jones
📺 Check out my extended video interview with Crystal and Pam over on Substack.

Intimacy From The Inside Out with John Palmer
00:40:45
On today’s episode I’m joined by John Palmer, a certified IFS practitioner and lead trainer in Intimacy From the Inside Out (IFIO). John brings 30 years of experience working with individuals and couples to explore how IFIO applies the principles of Internal Family Systems (IFS) to intimate relationships.
We discuss relational dynamics, including the concept of tracking sequences, differentiation, and how past experiences influence present connections.
Key Takeaways:
IFIO uses IFS principles to help individuals and partners explore relational dynamics and improve communication.
Differentiation is the ability to stay connected to your own system while maintaining connection with your partner, even during conflict.
How protectors and exiles show up in relational dances
The importance of taking responsibility for one’s own parts in a relationship while remaining open to connection with a partner
How practicing Self-Led communication can transform conflict into opportunities for healing and growth.
How do past experiences shape the way we respond to our partners in the present?
Tracking sequences in relationships reveals the protective cycles that keep partners stuck and highlights the underlying vulnerabilities driving conflict.
Favorite Quote: "There's actually some vulnerability under there that's driving this dance. And if we can learn how to help the protectors trust enough of Self to let that vulnerability emerge and be looked at and healed, then the protectors don't have to do what they do anymore." – John Palmer
About John Palmer: John Palmer is a certified IFS practitioner, IFIO lead trainer, and couples therapist with three decades of experience. He integrates IFS with systemic relational approaches to help individuals and partners build stronger, more compassionate connections.

IFS, Marriage and Stepfamilies with Marushka Glissen
01:02:06
Marushka Glissen, an assistant trainer with the IFS Institute is returning to the podcast to talk about one of her other passions, marriage (See episode 33 for our first chat about Legacy Burdens).
Here is a bit of an outline of the show:
1. Gratitude towards partner (esp during Covid)
2. Appreciation of partner (again, Covid)
3. Complications in 2nd marriages and blended families
4. Adult children dealing with intense feelings of loss and avoidance parts (We pause to deal with my parts who are triggered... this is about 23-28 min mark.
5. Guilty parts in 2nd marriages
6. 'Do you want to be right or do you want to experience closeness and love'
7. Using phrases "In my opinion"/"From my perspective"
8. Partners often ask us to stretch... we are better for it
10. How to stay when it is really hard? Or separate in a connected way.
11. Five practical tips on communication (about 50 min)
12. Embracing the Suck (the parts of my partner I don't like)
13. Be Curious, Not Furious
I share way too much personal information in this episode- about my family of origin (a blended family) and about my marriage. I took a long time editing this and checking with my parts about how comfortable they felt putting this out there. So, here it is. I may take it down immediately ;)
She grew up in NYC in the midst of therapy culture with many "shoulds" and a bundle of grief and loss.
Real healing happened for her while dancing to Prince alone in her bedroom, the place she felt connected to her body, to feelings, to imagination and creativity, to who she was authentically. Meaning, dancing connected Adrienne to her Self.
She talks about her move from NYC to LA, a move from therapy to coaching.
She has such a heart for healers and believes a lot of healers are caretakers in their family who have an intuitive knowing of how to help. She finds the parts coming up with clients are the ones coming up in everyday life so consultation and therapy are intertwined- similar parts come up in all of our relationships!
She describes an ongoing parallel process of being a wounded healer, finding healing for herself and then bringing that to her clients. For healers who have strong striver, doing, go-go-go, scarcity parts (like me and her!), she reminds us that these parts have amazing gifts. If parts are here (even the 'bad' ones), they are here for a good reason.
Her work is about "Embodied Creativity" which is integrating creativity, spirituality, and purpose making into IFS work, in and out of the therapy space. In movement, we become friends with sensations in the body and protectors soften. Her passion is intertwining parts work, playfulness, and meditation. She has found a home with IFS as all of her passions come together.
She reminds us of the importance of REST and creating sacred spaces where creativity can flow through. Then motivation and productivity can come from a different place. She suggests we ask parts daily how they would like to rest, to move, and to be.
She encourages us to seek what it is like to embody Self. This felt sense memory is a powerful practice to keep coming back to and relying on.
Adrienne never stopped dancing alone in her room, she never stopped her first form of meditation practice.
Let me know what your word is for 2020 - to find out my word this year (and last!) you gotta listen.
Enjoy!
(and Happy New Year!)

SPECIAL EPI! IFS and the Coronavirus with Derek Scott
00:22:17
Derek Scott and I decided to meet to talk about how we can support our community during difficult time.
IFS brings many gifts to our bodies, minds, emotions, and to the world. Self leadership supports our parts feelings of helplessness and uncertainty, and then we can support the people we come in contact with in our families, our neighbors, our co-workers and clients.
By the way, an hour after we finished recording this my son's school sent a lovely, heartfelt emailing cancelling classes. I started shaking and crying which was actually a completely unexpected response. I took a minute to be with my frightened parts as we talk about in this episode and felt an immediate shift to calm.
I imagine I will return to being with this part over and over again in the next few weeks.
Go listen- Take good care of all of your parts and one another.
xoxo

IFS and Relationship with Sacred Psychedelic Medicines with Payam
00:56:54
On today's episode I chat with Payam, a Psychedelic Somatic Internal Family Systems Practitioner who interfaces with various traditional and non-traditional psychedelic compounds in the treatment of trauma and chronic pain.
He collaborates internationally with world-renowned doctors and therapists in the treatment of an underserved population. Additionally, he has presented his work at numerous medical conferences reporting on the nature of pain through the unitary Mind-Body paradigm while also demonstrating how to alleviate pain at the intersection of traditional shamanic psychedelic medicines and Western evidence-based practices.
His work factors in the biopsychosocial and spiritual elements of healing. By acknowledging and addressing the totality of the human experience, he has seen firsthand how it can have a dramatic effect on mitigating the patient’s affective experience of pain.

IFS and Relational Intelligence with François Le Doze
00:56:08
On today's episode I chat with Dr. François Le Doze, MD. He is a psychotherapist, an IFS therapist, and trainer and has been a neurologist for nearly thirty years in a teaching Hospital in Caen, France. He has always been interested in the relationship between the body and mind, and his knowledge of neuroscience allows him to integrate recent neuroscientific findings into his psychotherapy practice. He's actively developing a model of psychotherapy called Relational Intelligence® based on his clinical experience and expertise.
In this episode we chat about:
How crisis caused him to reconsider his relationship with IFS and Psychotherapy
The influence of Polyvagal Theory on his Relational Intelligence Model
"This is not a Part, but a disruption in my nervous system."
"This isn't You; but a State of you."
A key clarification in the Relational Intelligence model: Self-regulation = what is happening in your body; Co-regulation = what is happening between us.
Bubble Theory: using meta-cogniton to connect and calm the nervous system
Two a-ha moments for me:
"We need to DO something TO the system and not expect the system will be able to unblend from the Inside Out."
Self Energy must be the regulator the client's system. This Self Energy can originate from either the Self of the client or the Self of the therapist. The client's Self CANNOT lead if their nervous system is dysregulated. In such cases we must tend to the saftey within the therapeutic relationship before proceeding (just as children experience Self of their parents through attachment before their own Self).

On today's episode I chat with Mel Galbraith, Chief Operating Officer of IFSCA (Internal Family Systems Counselling Association), to discuss her journey of grief, leadership, and transformation following the passing of Derek Scott, founder of IFSCA. Mel shares deeply personal stories about her connection with Derek, the legacy he left behind, and how stepping into a leadership role has shaped her life and relationship with her parts.

IFSCA’s new offerings like Stepping Deeper and Demo Days

IFS and Wisdom of Our Parts with Paul Neustadt
01:01:24
On today's episode I chat with Paul Neustadt, a lead trainer with the IFS Institute. Paul has such a warm, engaging teaching style and I just loved our conversation.
Paul's answer to the last question, "What would you do instead?" may be my new life goal or at least a daily intention.
Here is a bit of an outline:
1. Create our own inner circle - when you have a hard time accessing compassion (or Self)
2. Impacts of individualism (our culture) on our parts
3. Tapping into our own inner wisdom
4. The Gifts of our Exiles
5. Paul demonstrates Direct Access with one of my manager parts
6. Degrees of Blending
7. Inviting exiles (the younger parts of us) to 'tune into their true nature, who they really are'
8. Relational Heart Based Activism
9. When Self energy seems impossible. "What is this thing called Self and how do I get it!?"
You can email Paul at probneus@gmail.com for information about the Challenges of Applying IFS: Mastering the Basics Seminar which runs about 8 months once a year.

IFS and Chronic Pain with Susann Suprenant
00:56:23
On today's episode I chat with Susann Suprenant, Ph.D. Susann is a Level 1 Internal Family Systems practitioner and Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner working with coaching clients in their recovery from chronic pain and other mindbody symptoms. She holds a Ph.D. in Theatre Arts, is trained in Pain Reprocessing Therapy (Howard Shubiner, MD and Alan Gordon, LCSW) and facilitates mindbody support groups with Curable Health.
We talk about:
1. Benefits of getting curious about chronic symptoms as parts' protective strategies.
2. The Feldenkrais method
3. Polyvagal theory and 'Play as a Blended State'
I appreciated the experiential component Susann brings to the episode.
Susann introduced one of her mentors, Dr. Howard Shubiner to Dick which led them to co-author the following article entitled, "IFS and Chronic Pain: Listening to Parts who Hold the Hurt."
You can sign up for her mailing list to be notified of her upcoming online class beginning in January 2023, “Your Resilient Self: Creative Recovery from Chronic Mindbody Symptoms,” which explores pain reprocessing through the 8 C’s.
She refers to Curable- an app that can be found here:

IFS and Authenticity with Frank Anderson
00:45:27
On today's episode I chat with Frank Anderson. His new book, "Transcending Trauma" has been out for a month or so now, and he has done a few podcasts. I wanted to talk to him about how he is doing and what is going on in his life.
So! This is not just about trauma or his book. This is not about what is happening in the IFS world since Frank is an insider. This is not about Frank's workshops and IFS manuals and all those things.
This episode - the 99th episode- is about authenticity.
We talk about the book, of course. And, we talk about trauma. Mostly, we talk about family, love, and connection and their power to heal all of us.
Frank says, "Love Heals What Trauma Blocks."
