Confronting the Fear of Cancer Recurrence

Welcome to the latest Series of Supportive Care Matters, a podcast hosted by Medical Oncologist and International Cancer Survivorship Expert, Professor Bogda Koczwara AM.

The fear of cancer returning is a silent struggle for many survivors, often overshadowing their recovery. In Episode 1 of this new Series, Bogda explores this deep-seated anxiety with experts Professor Sophie Lebel and Associate Professor Ben Smith.

They unpack the realities of recurrence fears — why they persist, who is most affected and how they impact daily life. Research shows nearly every cancer survivor experiences some level of worry, but for 40%, it becomes a significant source of distress. Caregivers, too, often share in this burden.

Sophie and Ben highlight the need for better interventions, especially for underrepresented groups, and share practical strategies for managing fear in clinical settings. From open conversations to structured support pathways, they highlight ways to help survivors move forward with confidence.

Join us for an insightful discussion on breaking the cycle of fear and fostering a more supportive, hopeful survivorship journey.

In this week's episode Rachael Babin from Oncology News Australia talks with Associate Professor Matt Naylor about his research on identifying aggressive prostate cancer and his role as a Research Integrity Advisor at Sydney University.

Matt and his team have shown that levels of the gene CBFβ are increased during prostate cancer and when they stop the gene from working, tumour growth and spread is dramatically reduced. In his latest project, Matt's team will investigate exactly how CBFβ functions and determine if levels of the gene can be used as a marker to predict if a patient will have an aggressive or slow growing form of prostate cancer.

The Oncology Podcast, brought to you by Oncology News Australia, is proud to present Episode 24 in our series The Oncology Journal Club.

Hans Prenen gets us started with the PRODIGE 7 trial and a comparative study on colorectal cancer mortality in young adults which interestingly is rising USA, Canada and Australia, but not in Europe and Asia.

Eva Segelov gives us insight into delays with the development of a model to estimate the association between delay in cancer treatment and local tumor control and the risk of metastases and sets Craig Underhill a homework task on fractals.

We’ve given Craig a break from main papers this week after last week’s epic episode on ASCO GI which I highly recommend you listen to, if you’ve not already.

Our Quick Bites are a must listen too this week… everyone has something fascinating to share. Where else will you hear about colorectal cancer cells entering a diapause-like DTP state – aka hibernation, tweetations and the public disclosure of identifiable patient information by health professionals on twitter, surveillance mammography for older patients, why Albury is called Smallbury, an Australian study on late mortality in people with cancer and saddle sores among female competitive cyclists.
