TRAILER - The Next Delicious Thing
00:01:18
The Next Delicious Thing with Jennifer Earle
Weekly tales of delicious treats from London and beyond and some of the history and science behind them.
Join London local Jennifer Earle every Wednesday for a short exploration into a particular food or drink based on some of the delicious things she's been trying recently.
Who's Jennifer Earle?
Jen founded London's longest-running (and still running!) food tour business, Chocolate Ecstasy Tours.
She's worked in the food industry for more than 16 years - some of this inside major retailers.
She is a judge for the Great Taste Awards, the Quality Food Awards, the International Chocolate Awards, the Academy of Chocolate and others.
She spends most of her time exploring London and travelling to find the next delicious thing.
Why would you listen?
Because you also really REALLY love food.
You like a bit of food and history geekery.
For recommendations for delicious things to buy in London and beyond (many things she'll share can be posted anywhere in the world).
To keep up to date with new openings / trends.
Or maybe because her voice might help you to sleep?
Look out for the episodes when Jen visits a particular area and bookmark those for your next visit!
Remember to subscribe to make sure you don't miss an episode and go to thenextdeliciousthing.com to have the list and links emailed to you each week.

They call it Kadaif pastry (sorry, Honeys!). It is called Kataifi by some (here's a recipe if you want to make it from scratch). Itamar and Sarit also say you can make their dessert with strips of filo pastry!
This week's Delicious Things discussed in this order (by producer, not product): Honey & Co 1:38 Miel Bakery 3:32 E5 Bakehouse 4:22 Popham's Bakery 5:43 Fen Noodles 6:34 Xoco Chocolate 7:28
Also, a note: when I say Frank "discovered" the cocoa type, I should have said he helped to formerly identify it as a unique species. Clearly it was already being used and I still need to shake off my colonising heritage...

A new vegan bakery, a hidden cafe, allergen-free chocolate and my favourite things from Ottolenghi.
00:09:12
This week I visit new bakeries in Walthamstow, including a totally vegan one, and a cafe hidden in an industrial estate in Bow.
There's a heads up to anyone with serious allergies for a safe chocolate brand to consider.
I also share one of my favourite things from Ottolenghi's bakeries and talk about Neat Burger and the rise in plant based meat alternatives. I'd love to know your thoughts! If you have recommendations or things you think I should check out please email me at thenextdeliciousthing@gmail.com.

The Best New Foods at the IFE 2022: The International Food Exhibition
00:16:06
A bonus episode!
Not quite Friday night listening, but perhaps one for the gym/run over the weekend to make you smarter for work next week? Or maybe best to eat while you're cooking because you'll probably get hungry...
I went to the Food Industry Trade Show (IFE 2022) at the Excel Centre last week and there was too much to share so I gave it a podcast episode of its own!
Featuring the most INCREDIBLE vegan butter, vegan bacon you wouldn't believe, irresistible snacks, and more.
A must-listen for anyone in the food industry, but things anyone who loves food will want to keep an eye out for!

As I was buying myself a Bread Ahead doughnut last week I realised that, while most of the things that fill up the food feed of social media are much more attractive to look at than eat, there are some things that are worth the hype.
So, I asked some of my Instagram-famous mates to share which foods they think are WORTH THE HYPE.

DISCLAIMER: The sound on this is really poor. I'm sorry!
This week I sit down (foolishly, in the not-empty restaurant) with the Head Baker of Toklas Bakery, Janine Edwards. You can watch it on YouTube if you prefer.
You'll learn a few things about what it's like to be a professional baker and what's special about Toklas.
Tomorrow I'll release my chat with Emma Pudge and Manon Lagreve over Toklas' desserts and share their restaurant recommendations. Make sure you tap "follow" or the + button so you hear it!

This week I sat down with Great British Bake Off star Manon Lagreve and our mutual friend Emma Pudge who you might know as @emmahitsthespot on Instagram.
We ate two of the Toklas desserts and chatted about dessert (of course), cake and restaurant recommendations in London.

If you love to travel and love to cook, listen in to see how you don't need any cheffing experience to become a cook for retreats anywhere in the world!
Alongside some recommendations available by post anywhere in the UK and two places to visit in person in their recently opened branches in Covent Garden, this week's episode includes a longer interview with cookbook author and founder of the Retreat Chef Academy, Bettina Campolucci-Bordi.
The interview will be on YouTube soon, too.
Come back for the last two minutes of the podcast to hear the answers to a few follow up questions that I think you'll want to know. Specifically: how much money can a retreat chef make.

There are differences! I know, right? You've got to learn something new every day!
Let today be the day you learn the differences between all the things under the Ice Cream umbrella (probably not a good place to stand on a hot day... sorry, I shouldn't be allowed to write these.).
In the episode I also mention products from Dusty Knuckle, Harrods and The Midnight Pantry.

New Food Products at Balance Festival & Taste of London 2022
00:10:32
This week Jen tasted everything she could at Balance Festival at the Truman Brewery and at Taste of London in Hyde Park (just the packaged food vendors) and shares the new products worth your time and taste buds' attention.
Three new crisp-alternative snacks and a host of products that will help your gut health thrive. And three cookies that probably won't, but it'll be worth it.
Plus, not from the festivals, there's a gooey, rich chocolate and peanut butter brownie she picked up and devoured from a coffee shop near Battersea Park, and a vegan sandwich from a small chain with locations in and near the City of London.

Did you know in 2018 UK households threw away the equivalent of 1 million loaves of bread A DAY?
And - after briefly going down in April 2020 - that number may even be worse now.
This week I sit down with Chloe Stewart who is so concerned about how much edible food is wasted that seven years ago she set out to figure out how to save some of it, by turning it into something more appealing.
Nibsetc currently make DELICIOUS granola made from the pulp of cider apples, but there are more products in the pipeline using other "byproducts" from food manufacturing.
We discuss the current state of things, plus apps, schemes, simple tricks and great restaurants who will all help you to be part of a system that throws less edible food into landfill.
I also chat about one of the things I found challenging when I worked as a Food Buyer for a major supermarket.
I hope you enjoy!

About this week's foodie guest:
Chloë Stewart has lived in the UK, Hong Kong, the US and Switzerland and is on a mission to turn food byproducts into delicious new foods. She founded Nibsetc and you can find her granola online and at Borough Market on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
