28 Jun 2024 | 276. TNE RECAPS: Christian Nationalism invades Louisiana Classrooms | 01:23:03
Summary
In this episode, Tim and April discuss various aspects of Christian culture, including tattoos, the recent presidential debate, and a church selling plots of land in heaven. They are joined by Andrew Whitehead to explore the rise of Christian nationalism and its impact on issues like abortion. They highlight the increase in infant mortality rates in Texas after the abortion ban and critique the extreme views of some pro-life activists. The discussion covers the complexities within the pro-life movement, emphasizing the need for a nuanced understanding of reproductive rights, including access to healthcare, economic support, and comprehensive sex education. They also critique pro-life groups and politicians who fail to support policies that genuinely help mothers and children. The conversation then shifts to Christian nationalism's influence on American society, particularly the display of the Ten Commandments in public schools, exploring the motivations behind this push and the need for a more inclusive and compassionate understanding of patriotism and democratic responsibilities.
Takeaways
The rise of Christian nationalism has had a significant impact on issues like abortion, with some activists pushing for extreme measures and equating abortion to murder.
The recent abortion ban in Texas has led to an increase in infant mortality rates and birth defects, highlighting the unintended consequences of restrictive abortion laws.
There is a lack of compassion and nuance within the pro-life movement, with some activists failing to consider the real-life implications of their beliefs on women and families.
The pro-life movement needs to address the complexities of reproductive rights and focus on supporting women and families beyond just advocating for the end of abortion.
The rise of Christian nationalism and its influence on political discourse is a concerning trend that requires greater attention and understanding. Abortion is a complex issue that requires a nuanced understanding and consideration of various factors, including access to healthcare, economic support, and comprehensive sex education.
Pro-life groups and politicians should advocate for policies that support mothers and children, such as affordable childcare, healthcare, and livable wages.

19 Jun 2024 | 272. TNE RESPONDS: Robert Morris, Molestation Allegations, and Evangelical Corruption | 00:41:30
Summary
In this episode, Tim discusses the recent allegations against Robert Morris, the lead pastor of Gateway Church, who admitted to engaging in inappropriate sexual behavior with a 12-year-old girl when he was in his early 20s. Tim criticizes the response from Gateway Church and highlights the systemic issues within the evangelical church that enable and protect abusive pastors. He also addresses the harmful narratives propagated by conservative media about the supposed dangers of drag queen story hour, while ignoring the real threat of sexual abuse within churches. Tim calls for accountability and a dismantling of the toxic structures within American evangelicalism.
Takeaways
The allegations against Robert Morris are serious and have not been disputed by Gateway Church or Morris himself.
The response from Gateway Church and the language used in their statement minimizes the gravity of Morris' actions and prioritizes his healing journey over the survivor's experience.
The American evangelical church operates as a corporate entity focused on growth and spectacle, often prioritizing the protection of the organization over the well-being of survivors.
The evangelical church needs to address the systemic issues that enable and protect abusive pastors rather than blaming individuals or dismissing the problem.
Conservative media's focus on supposed threats outside of the church, like drag queen story hour, distracts from the real issue of sexual abuse within churches.
The current structures of American evangelicalism need to be dismantled in order to restore the witness of Christianity and prioritize truth, character, and integrity.

Summary
Rev. Dr. Angela N. Parker, a theologian and professor, is interviewed by Tim. They discuss Dr. Parker's work and the upcoming book by Richard Hayes titled:'The Widening of God's Mercy: Sexuality Within the Biblical Story,' which challenges traditional non-affirming views on sexuality and presents an affirming standpoint. Richard Hayes is an influential New Testament scholar known for his work on the faithfulness of Christ. One of his influential books is The Moral Vision of the New Testament, which includes a chapter on homosexuality. The conversation explores the problematic idea of trying to change the sexual orientation of LGBTQIA+ Christians. It discusses the pressure for LGBTQIA+ individuals to conform to a monolithic identity in order to be accepted by churches. The conversation also highlights the dominance of mostly white men in the field of biblical scholarship and the need for diverse perspectives. The conversation discusses the impact of Hayes' earlier teaching against queer affirming theology and the harm caused by his narrow perspectives. The conversation touches on the need for white men to listen to and learn from queer scholars who have already done extensive biblical scholarship. It emphasizes the importance of not overshadowing or dismissing the work of marginalized voices.
Takeaways
The field of biblical scholarship needs more diversity and representation
Listening to diverse perspectives can help challenge and broaden our understanding of the world

The work of white evangelicals should involve fighting against Christian nationalism and working towards justice and equality.
We need to critically think about who we invite into our spaces and the perspectives we prioritize.
Treating marginalized groups as monolithic is dangerous and perpetuates stereotypes.
Living in cognitive dissonance is challenging but can lead to growth and change.
There is a need for liberation from hateful rhetoric against LGBTQIA+ individuals within denominations and churches.
Flourishing and full participation should be possible for all members of the community.
Recognizing and amplifying the work of queer scholars and biblical scholarship is important.
Biblical scholarship has a significant impact on shaping Christian culture.
Faith should be a catalyst for social justice and dismantling systems of oppression.

Summary
In this conversation, Tim responds to a viral clip of a mega church pastor giving marriage advice. He critiques the pastor's perspective on marriage, particularly the gendered and stereotypical views that men don't care about weddings and women's bodies belong to their husbands. Purity culture teachings can lead to unsatisfactory sex lives and unhealthy marriages.
Comprehensive sex education and open communication are essential for a healthy and mutual marriage.

05 Jul 2021 | 20. Charlie Kirk and the Resurgence of Christian Nationalism with Professor Matthew Boedy | 00:59:14
I came across Matthew Boedy when I read an article he wrote critiquing Charlie Kirk’s rhetoric. I had to bring Professor Boedy on to ask him why he has an entire website devoted to Charlie Kirk and what his thoughts were on the resurgence of Christian Nationalism. Because Professor Boedy teaches rhetoric at the college level, we also dug in to talk radio and what makes their style of rhetoric so successful.
For those who don’t know, Charlie Kirk is one of the most influential and popular conservative commentators to come up in recent memory. He started a network called Turning Point USA which has a massive social media presence and is devoted to upholding Trumpism and conservative values.

31 Jul 2024 | 289. TNE RESPONDS: Exposing the Racism of Christian Nationalism | 02:56:21
Summary
In this episode, Tim and Dr. Kevin Carnahan respond to the ideas presented by Stephen Wolf, who advocates for Christian nationalism and promotes white supremacy. They discuss the dangerous ideologies and myths perpetuated by Wolf and his supporters, highlighting the need for critical thinking and awareness of the underlying agendas. The conversation covers topics such as the concept of a new Christendom, the myth of an immigrant nation, the oppression of white people, and the implications of affirmative action. Tim and Dr. Carnahan dismantle these ideas and emphasize the importance of understanding history and working towards a more inclusive and just society. In this part of the conversation, the principal themes revolve around critical race theory, multiculturalism, corruption, and immigration. The speakers discuss how critical race theory helps explain the persistence of systemic racism and the covert ways in which supremacist systems are maintained. They also address the misconception that policies benefiting non-whites are inherently bad for whites, highlighting the importance of understanding historical context. The conversation delves into the impact of multiculturalism on social trust and the common good, with differing perspectives on its effects. The speakers also touch on corruption, nepotism, and the role of immigration in shaping societal institutions. In this part of the conversation, Tim and Kevin discuss the arguments made by Stephen Wolfe in his speech.

24 Jan 2024 | 212. Is Deconstruction Destroying "Historic Christianity"? // Pete Enns | 02:00:56
Summary
In this conversation, Tim and Pete Enns respond to a video discussing deconstruction by Alisa Childers, Tim Barnett, and Sean McDowell. They explore the concept of a biblical worldview and its limitations and the definition and significance of deconstruction. They also discuss the role of biblical authority and the challenges of interpreting and applying scripture.
Pete and Tim explore the nuances of doubt and apologetics, the clash between modernism and postmodernism, the complexity of biblical interpretation, and the challenges of biblical inerrancy. They discuss the role of doubt in faith, the limitations of historical claims in the Bible, and the need for a nuanced understanding of biblical authority. The conversation delves into the rhetoric of war and the labeling of deconstruction as the doctrine of demons.
Takeaways
The concept of a biblical worldview can be limiting and oversimplifies the complexity of faith and theology.
Biblical authority is a topic of theological discussion and interpretation, and it is important to recognize the diverse and historical context of the Bible.
The role of personal experience and subjectivity should be acknowledged and respected in discussions of faith and theology. Doubt can play a positive role in the development of faith, and it should be embraced and explored rather than suppressed.
The interpretation of the Bible should consider the historical context and the complexities of biblical texts, rather than relying on a simplistic view of biblical inerrancy.
The church needs to address and confront issues of spiritual abuse and hold leaders accountable for their actions.
Orthopraxy, the practice of faith, is often overlooked in favor of orthodoxy, the right beliefs.
Deconstruction is a personal and often painful process that should be met with empathy and support.
The rhetoric of war and labeling deconstruction as the doctrine of demons can be harmful and divisive.
There is a need for further discussion and exploration of these topics to foster understanding and growth.

Summary
In this episode, Tim and April respond to the elder statement made by Gateway Church regarding the allegations against their lead pastor, Robert Morris. They express disappointment with the statement and discuss the lack of accountability and transparency. They highlight the need for Gateway Church to take concrete actions to address the harm caused and support the survivors. Tim and April also criticize the church's focus on the show and the institution rather than the well-being of the victims. They call for a halt in services, a thorough investigation, and financial reparations for the survivors. The conversation discusses the response of Gateway Church to the allegations against their former lead pastor, Robert Morris, who was accused of molesting a 12-year-old girl. The hosts criticize the church's lack of accountability and deflection of responsibility. They highlight the problematic mindset of some evangelical churches that prioritize success and money over addressing systemic issues and protecting victims. The conversation also touches on the comparison between leaving a church due to disappointment and leaving a church due to abuse, as well as the interconnectedness of charismatic leaders and the need for systemic change.
