Hey everyone, welcome to this episode of the Motherkind podcast, the show that's going to help you navigate the massive challenges of life as a modern mother with more confidence and clarity. This week's episode is all about relationships. That is what we're going to be talking about with the brilliant author Matt Fray. So you think you're a good person, you genuinely love your partner and you try to do the right thing. So why are you struggling in your relationship? Why do you and your partner feel unhappy? Why do you maybe feel disconnected? Or perhaps you've even thought about divorce? These are the exact questions that he asked himself after his marriage had ended. He was a good guy. He loved his wife, he was doing what he thought he should, be doing in a relationship. And yet one day his wife came to him and asked for a divorce. After that, Matt began a journey of self reflection to understand what went wrong. He wrote a now viral article called My wife divorced me, because I left dishes by the sink, and then a best selling book called This is how your marriage ends. What he learned is incredible. And I think pretty life-changing stuff. He saw that what happens in most relationships, particularly in relationships of good people who really do love each other, is that we engage in a series of small habits and dynamics that over time, erode safety and trust. Have you heard of the phrase the motherhood penalty? This week’s guest, Joeli Brearly, founder of the brilliant Pregnant Then Screwed charity is on a mission to help us understand what it means and also how to do something about it. She set up Pregnant Then Screwed after being sacked when she was just 4 months pregnant. It started as a project to collect other women’s experiences and now seven years later it is a leading charity supporting thousands of mothers each week who have faced discrimination at work. If you are not familiar with it, it’s worth looking up. Reading Joeli’s book, The Motherhood Penalty was incredibly eye-opening for me. I loved digging into the data on this. My intention with this episode was to bring awareness to this issue and bring to light some of the shocking data and statistics around what it means and how the system is basically rigged against us. Joeli explains why brilliantly in this episode. I hope this conversation inspires you to do something about it and think about how we can all support each other to make it a fairer playing field for mothers. Do you remember last year when we had Dr. Michele Borba on the show talking about this amazing new research that Barbie had done with Cardiff University about doll play and empathy? Well, that study for the first time ever, through neuroimaging, showed that doll play activates the part of the brain that allows children to develop empathy and social processing skills. Recently I was on holiday and I saw at least three women around the pool reading the book, Four Thousand Weeks, time management for mortals by Oliver Burkeman. Turns out the average person only has 4k weeks on earth. It doesn’t sound like much does it? That made me decide to read the book and I loved it. Oliver Burkeman is a best-selling author, keynote speaker and for many years he wrote a popular column for the Guardian, which you may have heard of, 'This Column Will Change Your Life'. This episode is about making the most of our radically finite lives in a world of impossible demands and relentless distractions. That basically describes my day-to-day. Oliver shares with us positive psychology that can help us overcome the overwhelm, make better choices and build a more meaningful relationship with time. He says that time management doesn’t mean becomming more productive, it means deciding what to neglect. And once we realise we can never fit everything in we actually then get the freedom to prioritise. My guest today is internationally acclaimed meditation teacher, speaker, and author Light Watkins. I’ve been looking forward to this conversation for a really long time having followed Light’s work for a while now. I think you’ll agree with me that he has an incredibly calming and grounding energy that I hope in turn helps you feel those qualities while you listen. Light explains how he committed to sending out a daily dose of inspiration everyday to his email list beginning from 2016. Some of those emails have now come together in Light’s new book, Knowing Where to Look, 108 daily doses of inspiration. We talk about the power of consistency and what it took to send out a daily email like that. And also how it is possible to find inspiration wherever we look. Light shares how we can all find inspiration just by training ourselves to look for it. I talk about that a lot, that what we focus on gets bigger. This isn’t about ignoring those challenging feelings and the hard stuff at all. We have to process that. We just also need to be able to hold the duality of focusing on what is good as well. We do however over this period re-release the most downloaded episodes from the past six months. And this week’s is brilliant. It is with Jess VanderWier who is a registered Psychotherapist, family and child therapist and founder of Our Mama Village, which has a massive one million Instagram followers. I absolutely loved this episode. I cried and got really emotional at the end when Jess describes her grandmother. It instantly connected me to a sense of perspective and what’s important. I feel like I constantly need that reminder to get out of the weeds of my day-to-day life and stress and to think about the big picture and this episode did it for me. I discovered Jess on Instagram and loved her compassion and her deep experience with families. This is an episode about gentle parenting and we talk about what that means. It’s also about the bigger picture so we are going to dive in together about why we might want to look into our values as parents and have a think about how we are parenting. In our busy lives, from the moment our eyes open to the moment our heads hit the pillow, it can just feel like go go go. It is so easy to forget to maintain perspective and the bigger picture of why your role as a parent is so important and how to navigate all the tricky parts with more grace and ease. I especially loved it when Jess talks about the seasons of parenthood and how to know when is the time to survive, to grit your teeth and get through it. And when is the right time to do that deeper work into what might be coming up for us as we go through the challenges of parenthood. What she shares is absolutely brilliant.
