23 Oct 2024 | Episode 44: Dr. Stephanie Gilbert on Bereavement & Grief: Does Loss Lead to 'Losing' at Work? | 01:02:50
The 5 stages of grief?! MYTH. Inequities in the workplace due to pregnancy & pregnancy loss? TRUE. Bereavement & Grief? NOT the same thing! Dr. Stephanie Gilbert has her doctorate in Industrial & Organizational Psychology and is an Associate Professor at Cape Breton University & in this episode she sits down with us to chat about how her current research focus was inspired by her own experiences with loss. She shares more on why bereavement and grief ARE Leadership issues, what you can be doing to ensure you are creating and contributing to a positive work culture for your employees and colleagues, and why we can ALL do better than "I'm sorry for your loss" when comforting others who are navigating through grief. She quickly starts busting some common 'grief myths', shares some phrases of support that can help us through death discomfort, explains why those experiencing pregnancy loss often go unsupported, and the importance of reviewing and adapting policies to be more supportive. She shares her own experiences with bereavement and grief due to pregnancy/infant loss and shares insights from research participants on their experiences returning to work (or not) after experiencing such loss. Loss is an inevitable part of life for all of us; but grief is both a universal and personal experience; making this an important listen for everyone! 10 Dec 2024 | Episode 45: The Conscious Chronicles: Mindful Parenting & Joyful Connections with Sheryl Fogarty | 00:52:13
Let’s talk conscious parenting! Is it just another parenting trend? Do we agree with it? Is it one in a long list of others meant to make us feel bad about ourselves and our current parenting styles? What does it even mean to be a 'conscious parent'? WE had QUESTIONS (& skepticism) so on this episode of The Morning Meeting we sit down with Conscious Parenting Coach, @theconscious_ishmom, Sheryl Fogarty to get all the answers!! Sheryl is a certified conscious parenting coach and owner of 'Conscious Parenting with Sheryl Fogarty'. She joins us around the table to break it all down—what it actually means, why it’s really not just another parenting trend, and how we can start being more intentional and connected with our kids. We realized we were trying to be conscious parents already and we didn't have anything to be scared of, although, this does require some work and effort. We chat all about the importance of self-awareness and reflection, community and connection, & how effective communication with ourselves and others really plays an integral role. By the end of the conversation we truly believe this idea of being 'conscious' isn't just for the parent/child dynamic, but other relationships, and brave leadership, too! We couldn’t fit it all into one episode, so welcome to Part 1 of our new series - 'The Conscious Chronicles' - an eye-opening conversation to introduce us to the world of Conscious Parenting, from here we will break down more specific aspects and applications in each subsequent episode. Join us—we’re learning right along with you! Visit www.sherylfogarty.com or @theconscious_ishmom on Instagram to schedule your free 30 minute discovery session with Sheryl. 15 Jul 2024 | Episode 39: Go Gray in May: Living Through a Brain Cancer Diagnosis with Ashley Hareguy | 01:00:17
Ashley Hareguy joins Sarah & Jess around The Morning Meeting table to discuss her journey since receiving a brain cancer diagnosis in March of 2020. The world was changing for most of us then, but for Ashley, in a different way. After learning of her cystic glioblastoma, Ashley decided she would face every part of this journey with humour and positivity. Not once did she waver in the fact that she could, and would, fight this. Through surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, while parenting a toddler (now 6 year old), Ashley was persistent and determined to be the example of a positive survivor story to tell for others, one she wished she found when starting her own journey. Ashley started a Go Gray in May campaign that raises funds for the Tom MacNeil Cancer Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Donations can be made here https://www.cbrhfoundation.ca/ways-to-give/donate-now/ Ashley has us laughing throughout this episode, and we almost made it through without any tears at all, but we know this may be a heavy topic for some and if this is too much to listen to while managing your own health anxieties, we understand. 04 Oct 2024 | Episode 43: Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation: Community, Collaboration, & Radio Day 2024 | 00:59:25
A thriving community starts with a strong foundation. Money in, Money Out. The support is great, the need is greater, & until no patient needs them, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation (CBRHF) will not rest.
Aiming to eliminate barriers to health care in Unama'ki-Cape Breton, The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation (CBRHF) is a registered charity responsible for raising funds to help strengthen health care on the Island - a cause near and dear to our hearts here at The Morning Meeting. In this special episode, we are joined by CBRHF Manager of Philanthropy, Caitlyn MacDonald, & Stephanie O'Neill (RN), Director of Emergency Services, Ambulatory Care, Spiritual Care (Eastern Zone, NSHA), who share about the importance of collaboration, reciprocity, & the impact initiatives & events have on community health and wellness. One of those initiatives, the Foundation's largest of the year, is RADIO DAY. The 17th annual Radio Day, presented in partnership by Hot 101.9 and New Country 103.5, will take place on Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 6am-6pm. Over the past 17 years, with the help of our incredible community, Radio Day has raised more than $11 MILLION for health care in Cape Breton. This year, the Foundation is asking for our community’s support in purchasing four portable ultrasound machines for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital (CBRH). Medical experts estimate that these new machines will impact more than 6,000 patients annually. From trauma patients arriving to the emergency room, intensive care patients needing life-saving medications, to cardiac patients presenting with unidentified heart complications, and more, portable ultrasound machines allow health care experts to make faster decisions and to provide more precise treatments. Essentially, these machines provide time in situations where every second matters. While the CBRH has a dedicated ultrasound department, portable ultrasounds are needed for unscheduled point-of-care imaging. Currently, the CBRH only has two older models of this machine and requires more to meet the demand of our hospital and its patients. By supporting Radio Day 2024, you can directly and positively impact thousands of patients in our community, including our friends, families, and neighbours, when they need it most. Joining Sarah & Jess around the table for this week's Morning Meeting is Dr. Heather & Hayley Rudderham. Heather and Hayley sit down with us over the course of two episodes to share their journey through reciprocal IVF beginning with the early stages of research, to picking a sperm donor, to the personal decisions, painful procedures, pregnancy, delivery and birth of their son, to adjusting to parenthood, and deciding what’s next! They cover the ins and outs, costs associated, the risks and rewards, difficult decisions, the discriminatory and privileged processes, and what it was like navigating through (traditionally) heteronormative systems as a same sex couple. In this part 1 episode we learn how two women from Cape Breton and Philadelphia meet and where their love story began. We travel with them from the East Coast of Canada to the West Coast of the United States of America and back again. A wedding, a few international moves, a Psy.D, Nursing degree, navigating through permanent residency applications, starting new careers, and more. Married in 2011, and always knowing they wanted children, it wasn't until 2016 that Heather and Hayley started actively researching the options available to them that eventually led to the birth of their son - Grey - in November of 2020. A real story of fate, love, strength and determination. They share how their dream became a reality with the love and support of friends, family and their incredible medical team. Heather and Hayley feel lucky and grateful for their experience and are happy to share their journey with us today, however, they do so while also acknowledging, honouring and recognizing how difficult of a process IVF is for those who go through it – everyone’s journey is unique and the outcomes can be so varied. In this Part 2 episode, the gals pick up where we left off - first by telling us how many eggs were retrieved (o m g !), what happened next, the reality of the IVF number game, the fertilization & embryo transfer processes, navigating through systems as a same-sex, bi-racial couple in every trimester, especially the fourth. Tough conversations, the importance of language, learning experiences, relationship roles, and name calling. Heather and Hayley are open and honest as they answer our questions, share their experiences, and tell us about the ups and downs experienced before, during, and after the birth of their son. What will Grey call them? Will they have more children? Did they face discrimination along the way? What has been the toughest part of parenthood thus far? A real story of fate, love, strength and determination. They share how their dream became a reality with the love and support of friends, family and their incredible medical team. Heather and Hayley feel lucky and grateful for their experience and are happy to share their journey with us today, however, they do so while also acknowledging, honouring and recognizing how difficult of a process IVF is for those who go through it – everyone’s journey is unique and the outcomes can be so varied. Sarah & Jess sit down with OBGYN, animal lover, crafter extraordinaire, Dr. Gillian MacMullin to explore the depths of what we should all know about women's health. We were learning so much & having so much fun we all agreed this had to be a reoccurring segment. So welcome to the initial episode, our consult appointment if you will, of WINE & GYNE: The Series. Join us every 6-8 weeks for our follow up appointment as Dr. MacMullin breaks down specific topics in women's health for us: hormones, family planning, pre-family planning and contraception, vaginal health, vulvar dermatology, the list is endless! During our 'first appointment' we meet Gillian (it's okay, she said we could call her that) and learn what led her to a career in obstetrics and gynecology, how she made her way back 'home', her special areas of interest, and what she likes to do in her 'spare' time. We waste no time jumping right into it; the itchy scratchy, the difference between our vagina and vulvas (we were today years old...), why you should put down the vaginal washes, and pick up a mirror! We discuss the importance of routine pap tests, the Gardasil vaccine, patient advocacy, what a vagina really looks like, and what is considered 'normal' for post-partum periods (it's all relative). Vaginas are like faces... not sure what we mean? Tune in to find out...The Doctor is now IN! 04 Apr 2022 | Episode 21: Money Talks: Humour & Honesty with the Homebody Hustler | 01:18:42
There are no shortage of laughs around the table as Sarah & Jess sit down with Erin Romyn, the Homebody Hustler, for a real life honest chat on this episode of The Morning Meeting. We knew it was love at first sight...of the blog cover photo. #relatable. Erin is a blogger, stay at home Mom, Instagrammer, writer, introverted comedian who makes mundane life funny online. She has been openly sharing her life through Instagram (@thehomebodyhustler) and her blog (www.homebodyhustler.com/) in the pursuit of being vulnerable (and hilarious) online and normalizing it all, and is building connection and community through her real, honest, entertaining words. Erin has recently started to examine her relationship with money and, lucky for us, has decided to take us all along for the ride. In this chat we discuss money & relationships - the good, the bad and the ugly - or the shame, guilt and scarcity of it all. The challenges of budgeting and why it doesn't feel natural. How to pay attention and respond to the creative 'nudges' from beyond. Journal writing and worrying who may read it in the future. Raising small humans and their influence on shifting mind-sets. Why thinking about the future is hard, anxiety and the trauma (trinkets) of a generation. How getting reflective about your buying wants/needs and figuring out your sh*t mentally will ultimately help your bank account. Embracing the messy, the real, the creative and the vulnerability to show the pieces people don't typically see. PS. Please don't watch shows without us. 02 Oct 2023 | Episode 33: "Put the Kettle On": September ends with Maggie the Musical | 00:43:47
S & J SESSIONS.Isn't Summer just starting?! Where.does.the.time.go?! We are back behind the mics for a quick catch up now that September is over and we can breath again (sorta). We chat about the start of the 'new year', changes and transitions and how life feels lately with a new level of busy. But, 'put the kettle on' because what we couldn't wait to share with you is how frickin' great of a show 'Maggie the Musical' is, now playing at the Savoy Theatre. Like a warm cup of tea & a granny's hug. Maggie will make you laugh & cry and remind you of someone you love. Co-created by award-winning artist, Johnny Reid, 'Maggie' celebrates the life of Johnny's own 'gran'. Matt Murray, Bob Foster, Mary Francis Moore, and Michael Rubinoff are just a few of the other names that round out 'Maggie's creative team. We think it's bound for Broadway - but there is something so special about seeing this one at the iconic Savoy Theatre. Take your own granny on a date, bring a pal, go alone - whatever you have to do - just get a ticket and don't miss out on this beautiful show. We laughed, we cried, we missed our own grandmothers & we went home and hugged our sons. Maggie is playing here in Cape Breton until Sunday October 8th, 2023. We are incredibly lucky to have this show playing in our own backyard - the talent, the story, the music; it's a beautiful show from start to finish.
