19 May 2022 | The Raiders’ Mess & the Trouble With Tanking | 00:37:34
In a very special episode of The MMQB NFL Podcast, Conor and Gary welcome Jenny Vrentas back to the show to cover a number of topics, starting with the investigation into the Raiders by Jenny and the team at the New York Times. Why is that franchise seemingly run like a disorganized mom-and-pop store rather than a billion-dollar enterprise? Why has there been so much turnover among their front-office leadership? And what would you do if Jon Gruden burst into your office to tell you you're doing a great job via football metaphors? Then, a discussion of tanking in the NFL in light of Conor and Gary’s recent piece into the NFL’s investigation into the Browns and their—to put it kindly—unique approach to the 2016 and ’17 seasons. Plus, Jenny takes on the hit sensation, More Than Four But Fewer Than Six Questions… is she up to the task? (Of course she is.) Have a comment, critique or question for a future mailbag? 19 Aug 2022 | The Deshaun Watson Suspension Is Settled… Maybe | 00:20:12
It’s a special emergency episode of the The MMQB NFL Podcast, as Conor and Gary delve into the final (maybe?) settlement of the Deshaun Watson suspension. Watson did a 180-degree turn on his apology soon after word of the settlement came out. What might Roger Goodell and the league think about that? And is there any mechanism in that settlement for this suspension to go past 11 games? Also, looking at the messaging coming out of Watson’s camp—from his agent, his private quarterbacks coach and their surrogates—and a discussion of what happens when some journalists are desperate for access while others are not. 03 May 2021 | NFL Draft Recap: Aaron Rodgers, Trey Lance, Patriots and the Drafts We Loved | NFL Deep Dive | 01:27:08
The 2021 NFL Draft is in the books, and Jenny, Conor and Gary talk all things draft weekend, starting with—for a second straight year—Aaron Rodgers's unhappiness with the Packers. Is this the end? Is this another Rodgers power play? And who will he be playing for Week 1 of next season? As far as the draft goes: Why Trey Lance was always the right move for the 49ers—and why he's the perfect fit for Kyle Shanahan—whether the Justin Fields trade up buys Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace more time in Chicago, the Jets' aggressive rebuild around Zach Wilson, and why there's a lot to like about the Patriots' draft. Plus, Eagles awkwardness with Zach Ertz and otherwise, Dave Gettleman is cool, whether the JOK slide was a pushback on positionless football, a moderately needed Nickelodeon feed and a much-needed Adult Swim feed. And that covers literally everything about draft weekend. 10 May 2021 | The Teams We Didn't Talk About Enough This NFL Offseason | NFL Deep Dive | 00:45:29
The dust has settled and the smoke has cleared on the 2021 NFL offseason; Jenny, Conor and Gary convene to talk about the teams and storylines that flew a little too under the radar. The Vikings drafted a quarterback in the third round and reportedly had interest in Justin Fields. Are they getting a little more serious about moving on from Kirk Cousins—and, if they are, should they be? Another look at the Rams, who did make a move at quarterback, and the Titans, who have revamped their defense but need to find a way to keep the magic going on offense. The NFC East maybe, kind of, sort of is back... perhaps? And did the Panthers passing on Justin Fields mean they weren't enamored with the prospect, or that they have their eye on some possible big QB names in the trade market? Plus, Conor reveals a Power Rankings Poll scandal—and it's not that the Bucs were knocked from the top spot. 24 May 2021 | The Deshaun Watson Cases: Everything You Haven't Heard But Need to Know | NFL Deep Dive | 00:45:51
The first half of this episode is not suitable for younger listeners. Jenny and Gary discuss the investigative piece—months in the making—that we unveiled on Friday, including the trove of new information about the Deshaun Watson cases. Misconceptions around the cases and the story itself, why it's important to gather information from someone aside from the lawyers involved, and why a better grasp of consent is most important to understanding how Watson and 22 women arrived at this point. Plus, putting an end to some of the ridiculous conspiracy theories surrounding the timing of cases and the Texans organization. In the second half of the show, Conor joins Jenny and Gary to discuss the Falcons' strange insistence on trading Julio Jones—specifically, why they’d probably be better off keeping their legendary receiver. Plus, the "seldom punt" coach is getting his shot in Division I, and Conor couldn't be more excited. 17 May 2021 | We Have a Schedule (17 Is a Prime Number!) and 'Tim Tebow: 90th Man' | NFL Deep Dive | 00:39:43
We have a 2021 NFL schedule in place, it's 17 games per team, and Jenny, Conor and Gary don't know what to do about it. A discussion on the optimism around more football, mourning the beautiful symmetry of 16 games, and whether or not Week 18 will bring unrivaled drama or bring a slate of games that look like the Sudfeld-fueled Eagles-WFT regular-season finale. Plus, a probably-too-long discussion of Tim Tebow: 90th Man. Does it matter that he's going to spend the summer on the Jaguars roster? Is there a benefit to it? Is there a downside? And a mind-blowing Tebow poll result from the youth of America in 2013. Finally, a conversation about Ja'Wuan James and the consequences of the Broncos' decision to cut ties with the veteran offensive tackle after he was injured during a workout away from the facility. And what’s the future of these minicamp gatherings anyway? 31 May 2021 | Stupid Good Ideas for Fixes Football Doesn't Need | NFL Deep Dive | 00:34:19
With summer getting underway, and the "NFL preview" calendar about to kick into gear, Jenny, Conor and Gary take one last chance to have some fun. Some *real* fun. We're going to rescue football before it falls into the kind of rut we see in other sports. We’ll discuss doink points and the Rammstein-soundtracked narrow uprights, make-it-take-it two-point conversions and endless games, the coaches' nightmare that is spot-and-choose, a chance for trolling, and a very Greg Schiano tale of defending victory formation. Then, be there podcasting history as, for the first time ever, the Orracle comes to the Monday Morning Podcast. We discuss where Julio Jones should land and where he will land. (Julio Jones, our phone lines remain open to you.) Plus, the upcoming weekend of board games and why Sorry will forever tear families apart everywhere. Have a question for a future mailbag? 27 Jun 2022 | An Underrated Episode About Underrated Players | 00:46:40
In honor of the release of Conor’s annual underrated players list (one player for each of the 32 teams!), Conor and Gary take a trip down the list to review its most interesting names. On this episode, a look at a slot receiver who deserves more of an opportunity, a veteran left tackle who’s getting a little more of his due, a productive young pass rusher emerging in the strangest of places, a first-round defensive back who reinvented himself with a new team, and a defensive tackle who enables a star teammate by making as many offensive linemen try to block him as possible. Plus, a confusing discussion about the Garth Brooks alter ego Chris Gaines, and some kind of school dance radio station album giveaway(?). 01 Mar 2021 | Free Agency Primer on Everyone But the Quarterbacks | NFL Deep Dive | 00:56:00
It's the "No QBs" edition of the Monday Morning Podcast, as Conor and Gary take a trip through the other 21 positions to see how the market might play out in an unusual offseason. Wide receivers might feel the cap crunch more than any other position, as a lot of big names are available but plenty of teams will instead be eyeing a highly regarded draft class and those oh-so-cheap rookie contracts. Can guys like Godwin, Golladay or Allen Robinson land big deals anyway? The offensive line group, meanwhile, presents a lot of steady options, which is all anyone is looking for up front anyway. On the defensive side of the ball, will Shaq Barrett finally break the bank? Will the Giants let Leonard Williams get away? Plus a look at a deep cornerback market, and why safeties might be out of luck again. 08 Mar 2021 | Ben and the Steelers' Short-Term Future, Chicago's QB Quandary, Top 200 Free Agents Preview | NFL Deep Dive | 00:42:52
Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers figured out a way to make it work financially, but can they make it work on the field? Conor and Gary take a look at how the Steelers got to this point, and the reasons to be optimistic—or pessimistic—as to whether it can work out for Pittsburgh in 2021, as they try to squeeze out another season of Super Bowl contention with an elite defense. We also take a look at the sad QB situation in Chicago, where the Bears don't have the ammo to do much of anything in the trade market. With Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy entering a must-win season, what's the solution going to be? Plus, the shrinking middle class in the NFL, the addition of J.J. Watt in Arizona, Conor absolutely berates Gary regarding Sports Illustrated’s upcoming Top-200 Free Agents list, and all the Baltimore Orioles talk you could possibly want from your favorite NFL podcast. 15 Mar 2021 | The Legal Tampering Show: Saints' Next QB, Chiefs O-Linemen, the Free-est Free Agents | NFL Deep Dive | 00:41:50
With tampering happening very legally, Conor and Gary take a trip around the league as the news simply piles up. Drew Brees makes his retirement official, and that means a quarterback controversy in New Orleans. Looking at the pros and cons of billion-dollar man Taysom Hill and potential free-agent retainee Jameis Winston. Plus, Cam Newton gets another shot in Foxboro, while the Bears and Football Team are still looking for a seat in a very not-fun game of quarterback musical chairs. The Chiefs, after losing a Super Bowl due to a lack of offensive tackles, let go of their two starting veteran offensive tackles. The Ravens prove they are as shrewd as ever with the Kevin Zeitler signing, the Texans prove they know how to dial phones and make trades after all, and Kenny Golladay is an early winner of the offseason for avoiding the franchise tag. 22 Mar 2021 | The Free Agency Moves We Loved a Lot, the Free Agency Moves We Loved Less | NFL Deep Dive | 01:14:41
The first week of free agency is in the books, and Conor and Gary are ready to overreact to all of it: *A look at the quarterback signings: why Bears fans are rightfully bummed about Andy Dalton, why Washington is doing just fine with Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Dolphins get a steal in Jacoby Brissett, and Mitchell Trubisky finds a good home in Buffalo. *As Gary has been saying since the beginning of time, free agency was a bummer for many good young receivers this offseason. But Kenny Golladay gives the Giants exactly what they need for Daniel Jones as their QB enters Year 3. *Plus, the Jon Gruden era for the Raiders takes another strange turn, the Titans remake their defense, the Chiefs find reinforcements for the offensive line, the Patriots spend big on some nice fits, and the Jets are the undisputed champions of free agency. 31 Mar 2021 | NFL Draft Preview ... Preview: Who's Taking a QB? | NFL Deep Dive | 00:28:27
Albert Breer makes a very special appearance on a very special Tuesday Edition of the Monday Morning NFL Podcast, as he and Gary take a look at the draft's Big Five quarterbacks, and the teams that are most likely to take them. *It seems most years there's a quarterback who comes out of nowhere, and this year that quarterback is Zach Wilson. Has he moved into the driver's seat to go No. 2? *While the offensive talent Justin Fields had at Ohio State was elite, the offense's more advanced, pro-style elements might have meant fewer layups. With that in mind plus his physical traits, should he be a top-three target? *A look at Trey Lance, and the difference between being a "loose" athlete and being an "explosive" athlete at quarterback, and why Lance might be very Josh Allen-ish. *A discussion on Mac Jones, and how the idea of a "high floor" QB prospect has been turned on its head a bit. *Also, we have a pretty good sense that quarterbacks are going with the top three picks, but what will the Falcons do at 4, and which teams might be looking to make a move up to snag a QB (and why)? 28 Dec 2022 | Hackett’s End, Baker’s Redemption, Packers’ Pulse and More | 01:01:25
It’s a hybrid show on The MMQB NFL Podcast—not quite a review, not quite a preview, but you get a good meal. Conor and Gary do their best to ignore a horrifically boring slate of Week 16 games and instead look to the bigger pictures around the league. And, to do that, it’s a whirlwind trip division by division. On this show: • A discussion of the fallout in Denver, where the Broncos’ new ownership group takes the most predictable and—historically—least effective path toward putting out the five-alarm fire engulfing their organization. • Baker Mayfield’s on-field play has put him back in the discussion for a starting job in 2023. Should he want that? Should anyone want that? • The Packers are back in the playoff hunt. Have they really turned it around though? A search for optimism, but on the defensive side of the ball. • Plus, J.J. Watt’s retirement, the final stages of the Colts’ total collapse, the Bucs continue to hang by an absolute thread, and more. So much more. Have a comment, critique or question for a future mailbag? 09 Sep 2022 | How Buffalo Buffaloed the Rams (or, Is Josh Allen Invincible?) | 00:36:42
The NFL Opener is in the books and, basically, the defending champs lost by three touchdowns in a game that wasn’t even that close. The Bills picked up where they left off in terms of their general unstoppableness on offense, but it was more than that. They showed off an identity we haven’t seen much of from Josh Allen (it’s so quick!) and on the other side of the ball they had a cast of 10,000 very fast, very young pass rushers to go along with Von Miller in a dominant performance. For the Rams, was it rust? Was it Matthew Stafford’s troublesome elbow? Is Allen Robinson disappearing going to be a thing? Also, why it’s a tad of an overreaction to worry about their Von Miler–less pass rush (for now). Plus, Conor and Gary discuss precisely how fixed the NFL is, and identify their favorite matchups in the Sunday early window. Have a comment, critique or question for a future mailbag? 07 Nov 2022 | The Frustration and the Jubilation of an Emotional Week 9 | 01:04:55
It was a smaller slate in Week 9, but there were still a couple of monstrous underdog wins—not to mention a lifetime worth of frustration for two star quarterbacks. Conor and Gary start things off in East Rutherford, home to lots of winning football in 2022, including the Jets’ victory over the Bills. An examination of just how good this team is, and just how they’re going to manage around an erratic young quarterback. Then, a new kind of frustration for Aaron Rodgers as the Packers let one slip away in Detroit, while Tom Brady pulls off an improbable comeback—even by his standards—after a ridiculous day of drops against the Rams. And the Titans nearly pull off the upset in Kansas City, behind a very physical defense and some classic Mike Vrabel ball. Plus, Jaguars stuff, a Van Ginkel touchdown, and so much more. 22 Sep 2022 | When Someone Has to Be 0–3… | 00:41:51
We all know the—albeit fluky—stat regarding the drought of 0–2 teams going to the NFL playoffs, but what about 0–3? Because by Sunday evening, either the Titans or the Raiders, both playoff teams a year ago, will be in that unenviable hole. With that in mind, Conor and Gary discuss those two teams and their Sunday matchup, including whether or not to believe in their coaching staffs, and just how deep the hole is for either franchise if they lose a third straight to start the year. Then, a look at the Bills-Dolphins matchup, as Miami tries to exorcise some demons against a team that has owned them the previous two seasons. Can the Bills’ thin cornerbacking group still hang with the Tyreek Hill–Jaylen Waddle tandem? Plus, a run through the rest of the Week 3 action, and a Sega Genesis–inspired defensive approach for stopping Josh Allen. Have a comment, critique or question for a future mailbag? 17 Oct 2022 | Bills-Chiefs, Eagles-Cowboys Meet the Hype as Rest of the NFL Burns | 00:57:36
It was an upside down slate of games in the NFL, though the two headlining games more than made up for it all. Conor and Gary break down everything that went down on Sunday (including, sadly for our listeners, some baseball playoffs). It starts in Kansas City, where the Bills didn’t really exorcise anything, but they did prove they can overcome some execution issues, on the road, against an elite opponent. Throw in a rapidly improving defense and you have a team that is just much, much better than the rest of the NFL. The Eagles and Cowboys punched and counter-punched in Philly in a very good Sunday nighter that reminded us to never count out Cooper Rush and also the real meaning of Christmas. How the absurdity of the Trubisky-led Steelers routing the Bucs came to be, the Falcons continue to melt our icy hearts, New York is only for winners, Bailey Zappe yes but mostly the Patriots defense is doing it’s thing again, and unconfirmed rumors that the Vikings are 5–1. On the mid-week show, Conor and Gary take a look at three big Week 4 matchups. Will Doug Pederson get booed in his return to Philly? (And, also, do the Jaguars have the defensive formula to slow Jalen Hurts and friends?) How will the Bills offense respond in Baltimore after 90 plays in the South Florida heat? And will the Chiefs play nice offensively, and continue to put the pressure on Tom Brady defensively? 03 Nov 2021 | Trade Deadline Spectacular, Starring Von Miller and Multiple Odell Beckhams | 00:36:29
The NFL trade deadline has come and gone with the usual lack of, well, trades. But that won’t stop Jenny, Conor and Gary from breaking down the big deal (Von Miller), the deals that didn’t happen (Odell Beckham Jr. and Deshaun Watson) and the other little deals that went through. Yes, we know what Von Miller brings to L.A., but what does this deal say about the boldness of GM Les Snead, who continues to shed draft capital but also continues to oversee a team that wins a lot of games? Then, a discussion of podcast favorite Charles Omenihu and what he brings to the 49ers, as well as the Texans’ underwhelming trade deadline after loading up on veterans on tradeable contracts last offseason. Plus, the impact of the Chiefs gaining one big name (Melvin Ingram) while moving another (Laurent Duvernay-Tardif). Finally, a look at the awkwardness of the Odell Beckham Jr. situation in Cleveland, after the noise made by his father and one prominent friend named LeBron who is also an athlete of some kind. And the least surprising development of all: the lack of a trade for Deshaun Watson, in spite of a torrent of reports that he would be moved. Have a question for the show? 10 Nov 2021 | NFL Midterms: A Remembrance of Preseason Predictions | 00:55:44
With the midpoint of the 2021 season officially upon us, Jenny, Conor and Gary take an opportunity to look back at both the season’s first half, and their predictions from the summer when we were all younger and a little more naive. Discussions about the disappointing Dolphins, the pleasant surprise that is the 2021 Bengals, the stunningly slow start for the Trevor Lawrence-led Jaguars, the Saints QB situation, and maybe—just maybe— a good time to hop on the New York Jets’ bandwagon? What was the biggest surprise of the 2021 season so far? What developments are we most intrigued by for the season’s second half? And what were our most accurate—and therefore favorite—predictions? Then, each host has a chance to stick with, revise or (maybe) add to their preseason Super Bowl prediction from the summer. Have a question for the show? 17 Nov 2021 | How We Arrived at the Future of Quarterbacking | 00:24:25
It happens so often that you might not even take much notice anymore. A scramble concluding with an off-balance throw that lands directly on-target downfield. A sidearm sling to work the ball through an impossibly narrow throwing lane. A jump pass from a collapsed pocket, the ball flying further than what would seem to be biomechanically possible. Ten, maybe even five, years ago you’d only see a couple plays like this over the course of an NFL season; now, you’re seeing a handful of them seemingly every week. And, it turns out, that’s not by accident. Conor joins Jenny and Gary to discuss his SI cover story on the quarterback evolution, and coaching revolution, that has swept through all levels of football faster than anyone could have imagined. And how, just a few years after it looked like the NFL was in the midst of a quarterback crisis, it now seems like the position is stronger than ever. Have a question for the show? 03 Oct 2022 | The Scrappiness, Small Victories and Mayonnaise of Week 4 | 01:26:55
The Week 4 Sunday slate brought us some humbling losses and heartwarming victories, and Conor and Gary are here to discuss all of it, as well as remember two former Northwestern quarterbacks. We’ll start with the Chiefs in full on Sunday night, as K.C. got an early turnover and steamrolled the Bucs with a Mahomes-ian moment or two along the way. In Green Bay, the Packers continue to work through their growing pains while the Patriots, down to their third-string QB, are looking to become the scrappiest scrappers who ever scrapped. And, what to take away from the Eagles’ victory over the (very real) Jaguars, and the suddenly impressive Cowboys continue to make it work. Plus, more Ravens going for it on fourth down stuff, London hosts the most impressive missed kick in NFL history, Kenny Pickett time in Pittsburgh, the Giants run out of able bodies at quarterback, the small victories of Geno Smith and much more! 29 Jul 2022 | The Kyler Murray Deal and the Dumbest Contractual Clause | 00:37:35
One long-awaited quarterback contract got done this week, but as with all things Cardinals-front-office-and-Kyler Murray since the team’s wild-card round meltdown in January, it wasn’t without loads of negativity and drama. Specifically, the now infamous “homework clause” that appears in Murray’s record-setting deal, the cause of tremendous embarrassment for the star QB this week. Conor and Gary welcome MMQB Business of Football columnist and former Packers team president Andrew Brandt, to discuss the mind-blowingly foolish clause, who might have come up with the idea and why it’s a terrible idea, as well as a discussion of the money and the way the contract is structured to pay out. Also, looking at the Lamar Jackson negotiations dragging on in Baltimore, and what it means for a player to hammer out a deal without an agent. 04 Jul 2022 | Moneyball! What We Can Learn From the Ravens | 00:27:24
Some not terribly sharp people might dismiss the Ravens for a lack of Super Bowl championships over the past four seasons, but on this show, Conor and Gary cover just how Baltimore is positioning itself for consistent championship contention by exploiting roster-building inefficiencies. The wide receivers grabbed the headlines this offseason, but what does it mean to collect quality tight ends in a league with so few? Plus, why offensive linemen who aren’t tackles can anchor a front five, the importance of flexibility in the defensive backfield, and the advantage of zigging when other people zag regarding organizational philosophy. And, more than anything on this Independence Day in the U.S., the importance of being your own, weird self rather than trying to copycat everyone else. 18 Apr 2022 | What’s the Deal With These Offensive Linemen? | 00:33:31
Every draft season, humans who can block other humans are at a premium. But are there certain teams and certain quarterbacks who need great offensive linemen, while others simply need “good enough” up front? How do you separate the lineman from the QB and the system? And what might we learn from watching Austin Corbett in 2022? Conor and Gary get existential in the offensive line draft preview, but then they get down to business. A look at the top prospects in this draft class, and why the Jaguars might be better off going O-line with the first overall pick rather than selecting Aidan Hutchinson. Plus, identifying a couple of under-the-radar prospects who could be sitting on the board in Round 2, and yearning for (or, loathing the thought of) a Michael McDonald/311 collaboration. The first Sunday of the 2022 NFL season is in the books. A few of the games were really good. A lot of the games were really close. And the day ended with one star quarterback, Dak Prescott, injuring his thumb in an ugly loss to the Bucs. Conor and Gary unite to discuss it all, and to figure out what we can actually take away from Week 1. Are the Steelers going to pile up weird and wild wins again? Are the Colts going to keep on getting into dogfights with bad opponents? Is Saquon Barkley here to stay? There were some very intriguing matchups in Week 13, but all eyes were on the return of Deshaun Watson in Houston. Conor and Gary discuss why that was particularly unfortunate, as Watson struggled in his first game back, the broadcast team struggled desperately to articulate why Watson hadn’t played in a meaningful football game in 700 days, and everyone else was treated to one of the worst games in recent memory. Then, things take a turn for the better in discussions of the Bengals’ already-great-but-still-improving offense, and Brock Purdy outdueling Tua Tagovailoa and the overwhelmingly good 49ers defense. With that in mind, Conor and Gary welcome SI NBA writer Rohan Nadkarni back to the show to discuss just what it means to “buy” a championship, why it’s an absurd accusation, and why more teams should be doing precisely what those champions did. Then, the trio fires off a number of takes, ranging from Tua to Russell Wilson to Nathaniel Hackett to all kinds of NBA stuff, at which point Rohan describes how the current NBA works and why basketball teams are not on the verge of turning to lineups full of Eddy Currys and Bryant Reeveses to counter the league’s influx of “Spaghetti Men.” Plus, Rohan tries his hand at More Than Four But Fewer Than Six Questions! The third episode of Conor and Gary’s team-by-team, four-at-a-time season preview countdown is here, and they’re getting into the teams that should be entering 2022 with playoff aspirations (of varying degrees). Once again, we will not reveal who the teams are in this episode description, but we will provide these clues from our conversations: Team 24: A way to program the quarterback to carry out one of three tasks: Quick throw, throw away, or crumple like a deflated Christmas decoration. Team 23: Is the ceiling ever going to get any higher? Team 21: If your manager tells you to go away, would you go to their boss and tell them that you’re staying? Also Team 21: The ballad of the re-cast offensive lineman. And who will advertise a netball sub? Come back every Monday for the next four teams in the countdown and perhaps to hear what archaic technology Conor Orr is re-embracing next.
