11 May 2024 | Have you been making this midlife mistake? | 00:18:10
One of the biggest mistakes we see is midlifers taking an isolated approach to overcoming a struggle or challenge they have. Maybe they don’t feel good in their body so they’ll do a diet, get a PT or hire a nutritionist. Maybe they’ll try a gadget, app or test kit. Or maybe they feel depressed, anxious and demotivated, so they seek help - maybe with a doctor who prescribes pills straight away, or they see a therapist. All of these are fine - but they’re not tackling things in an integrated way. And that’s essential, because we’re holistic beings. And the purpose of our approach is to bring the mind, body and soul into alignment. To look at all aspects of the self, rather than just one part. Only when we do this can we truly thrive and reach our fullest potential. In this episode we dive into more detail about this and give you the low down on our ENRICH method. 08 Dec 2024 | Too Old To Work...? | 00:24:27
In November research was released that showed the average age at which candidates are considered “too old” for job roles is 57. This ties in with what we’ve heard anecdotally working with organisations and clients - that ageism is now a significant issue in the workplace. We have an ageing population and an increasing life span with many people happy to work beyond retirement - so how do we foster a more age inclusive work culture? In this episode we dive into the shocking stats around age and work, look at the benefits of having an age diverse workforce, dispel some myths about older workers and look ahead to what organisations can be doing to help create a more age inclusive culture. On this week’s episode of The Midlife Mentors podcast we’re absolutely thrilled to be joined by Kate Muir, who is well known for being the creator and producer of the groundbreaking documentary with Davina McCall on the menopause which premiered in 2021 and changed the menopause conversation in the UK forever. As a women’s health advocate and author of books on the menopause and the pill, this conversation with Kate is incredibly uplifting, insightful and informative. She shares how she had her own midlife crisis, brought on by the menopause - and brilliantly, how the initial rejections for her documentary concept on the menopause fuelled her passion to get the message out there even more and eventually led to Channel 4 and Davina McCall becoming involved. Kate talks about HRT, the importance of combining it with lifestyle factors such as weight lifting and nutrition and also the impact menopause has on our brain health. 01 Feb 2025 | Tackling Ageism: An Interview With Professor Sarah Vickerstaff | 00:49:09
Something we started to focus on towards the end of last year is the issue of ageism in the workplace. We started to hear more and more anecdotal stories about people being unable to find new roles on the basis of their age, and even spoke to recruitment professionals off the record who told us that clients were filtering applicants by age. Clearly there’s a huge personal cost to ageism, but in today’s skill shortage environment there can also be great cost to organisations. The job site Total Jobs released research on ageism in 2024 that highlighted some disturbing trends, with 59% of recruiters admitting to making age-based assumptions and 46% considering candidates over 57 “too old.” We wanted to know more, so in this episode we’re joined by Professor Sarah Vickerstaff, Professor Emerita of Work and Employment at the University of Kent, and a leading expert in this field. She co-authored the Total Jobs research and she shares with us not only her findings about how age discrimination manifests in the job market, but most importantly—practical steps we can all take to create more inclusive, respectful work environments. Whether you’re an employer aiming to retain valuable talent or an employee seeking fair treatment, this conversation will shed light on the realities of workplace ageism and offer pathways for positive change. So settle in, and get ready for an insightful discussion that might just change how you view your career journey and the role age plays in it. We hope you enjoy it. 15 Feb 2025 | The Extinction Of Experience: Interview with Author Christine Rosen | 00:45:43
Something we’ve talked about a lot on The Midlife Mentors podcast is the impact of social media and the digital world we live in, in particular on our relationships. In this episode we dive deeper as we’re joined by Christine Rosen, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and author of the thought-provoking book The Extinction of Experience. In a world increasingly dominated by digital technology, many of us have become disconnected from direct, meaningful encounters with the natural environment and with each other. Christine’s work delves into how and why this shift has happened—and the profound consequences it may have for our well-being, our culture, and even our understanding of ourselves. During our conversation, we explore the roots of this “extinction of experience,” uncover what it means in practical terms for our day-to-day lives, and consider how we might reclaim a more authentic and engaged way of living. Whether you’re a concerned parent or educator, or simply curious about how modern life shapes our worldview, this discussion promises fresh perspectives and, hopefully, a few solutions to help us reconnect. 17 May 2020 | S3 Ep13: Don't Be A Fatty Over Fifty | 00:23:25
Apologies to listeners. The wrong file was uploaded on Friday. Tech mistake our end! We hope you enjoy..... Don't Be A Fatty Over Fifty - Boris Johnson’s words apparently - after attributing his weight to his life threatening experience of coronavirus. Although they may seem harsh - the truth is, a shocking 1 in 3 people in the UK are obese - and being obese doubles your chance of needing hospital treatment for coronavirus. It also means you're 10 times more likely to die of it. Of course the virus is deadly - but it's time to wake up and stop burying our heads in the sand. Approximately 34,000 people die due to obesity related illnesses per year and it costs the NHS £5-6 billion. This is a huge, societal problem and coronavirus has rightly shone an even brighter light on it. Worrying about whether it's politically correct to discuss obesity, for fear of being labelled 'fat shaming' won't solve the issue. Education, knowledge and emotional support it's what's needed to truly help overweight and obese people live the healthy, happy life they deserve. Prevention is always better than cure. And we're 100% committed to doing what we can.... 16 Dec 2020 | S3 Ep26: The Inner Critic: Interview w/ Steve Chapman | 00:47:26
The inner critic. The inner bully. Whatever the name - it's the voice inside our mind that often sabotages the life we dream of - and deserve. It tells us we're not good enough, smart enough, brave enough (and any other 'enough-ness' you'd like to add). It can be debilitating - always pulling us back to playing small. In this episode we interview TEDx speaker Steve Chapman - who back in 2017 gave a groundbreaking talk about the inner critic. We came across his work recently and knew you would relate to his journey and wisdom - as we did. From personal experience these are important conversations to have - so we feel comfortable bringing awareness and compassion to our own inner critic. Forgiveness. You deserve to receive it. And it’s right to give it. Resentment, anger and shame from the past only serves to hold you back. It prevents you from shining your light and also negatively impacts not only your mental and emotional wellbeing, but your physical health. In this episode we reveal why forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves and how we can use it to finally set ourselves free.
