06 Jul 2024380. Dan Hesse talks with renown wine critic Robert Parker about Changing Careers to Pursue a Passion00:44:55
In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Dan Hesse talks with Robert Parker, a man widely considered the most powerful critic of any genre in history, about changing careers to pursue a passion. Pulitzer-prize winning media critic David Shaw, in his two-part Front Page profile for the Los Angeles Times, called wine critic Robert Parker “the most powerful critic of any kind, anywhere.” Parker’s impact on the wine world has been unrivaled, and many others agree that no critic of any genre, be it theatre, movies, music, art or fashion, has been as influential in their industry as Robert Parker has been in wine. Internationally acclaimed and recognized, Parker is the only wine critic ever awarded France’s highest Presidential honor, which he received twice, from France's Presidents Chirac and Mitterrand. Robert was the first critic given Italy’s top honor by Italy's President Berlusconi. He was also the first critic given Spain’s highest civilian honor by King Juan Carlos. Even though his influence is global, being hounded by paparazzi when he’d visit places like Japan, Robert Parker is an American writer who has had an enormous impact on America’s interest in and fascination with wine, and many say he’s been a major influence on how wine tastes and is made today. 20 Jul 202415-Time Emmy Winner Jimmy Roberts joins Dan Hesse to share life lessons on how athletes break out of slumps00:42:56
In this episode, THE MENTORS RADIO Host Dan Hesse talks with Jimmy Roberts, a 15-time Emmy Award-winning sports reporter and writer for ESPN and ABC Sports, about how athletes break out of slumps. Jimmy Roberts has had what most people would think of as an interesting run. During a 30-year career in network television, he has spoken at the United Nations, and interviewed a convicted murderer behind the walls of Attica State Penitentiary. He has traveled with the heavyweight boxing champion to meetings with Nelson Mandela in Soweto and the Pope at the Vatican … and had dinner at the White House with the president of the United States. That said, he is primarily known as a sports reporter who has chronicled 19 Olympic Games, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NBA Finals, Wimbledon, and, of course golf, where he has covered more than 70 major championships, 15 Ryder Cups, and since 2012 has been the signature voice of Augusta National’s acclaimed digital platform MASTERS.COM. Roberts has earned numerous distinctions, including a Golf Writers Association of America award, The Metropolitan Golf Association Distinguished Service Award, and the Lincoln Werden Journalism medal. He is also a prolific writer. For two decades Roberts has been the featured back page columnist for Met Golfer (NY) Magazine. His most recent book, the bestseller “NO ONE WINS ALONE” (Simon & Schuster,) written in 2021 with hockey legend Mark Messier, discusses motivation and performance lessons from one of professional sports greatest leaders. In 2009, Harper Collins published his first book, Breaking the Slump, which tells the story of how some of the best golfers to ever play the game - as well as one former president and one Olympic gold medalist - dug themselves out of career-threatening dry spells. The book was critically praised in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated. “Jimmy Roberts has always been a wonderful storyteller, touching the hearts and challenging the minds of viewers,” said legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. Roberts often speaks about the book, which he understands has a universality to it: “As golfers, we’re all really the same. There are two types of us in this world; those who’ve had a slump, and those who are going to have (at least) one. And it’s a matter of degree. When Jack Nicklaus struggles, he loses the ball to the left. When I struggle, I just… lose the ball.” Roberts also came to realize in writing this book - ostensibly about golf - that it really was something that had nothing to do with the game; it was a book about how successful people handled adversity. For the last 24 years, Roberts has been a fixture on NBC, where this summer he will report from the Paris Olympic Games. In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with Catherine Harrington, PhD Renown as an innovator in organization psychology, Dr. Catherine Harrington's work has profoundly impacted countless lives and organizations. That said, her own journey is nothing short of extraordinary. After earning her doctorate, Catherine found her true calling in executive search and organizational psychology, helping organizations and individuals thrive together. Host Tom Loarie, in his role as CEO of a venture-funded medical startup at the time, experienced Catherine's work first-hand and saw what a profound difference she made in his company. In a similar way to how a doctor guides a patient to health, she guided the company to organizational health through a combination of clearly understanding the company's objective and purpose, taking the time to literally walk around, engage and listen to individual employees at all levels, and evaluating the results. Again like a doctor, Dr. Harrington then made recommendations that would improve the health of the organization. This happened over time, as she continued to observe, engage, "take the temperature" and evaluate results. Catherine's success in implementing innovative programs that transformed the company culture were so powerful that the company achieved an employee turnover rate of 80% BELOW the Silicon Valley average! In this episode, Tom and Catherine will explore the strategies that drove these remarkable results and how Catherine's approach to communication, culture and individual empowerment can serve as a model for any organization—from small business, family, nonprofit to large corporation. You'll learn insights that can transform YOUR company (or nonprofit or even family) culture for lasting success. Listen to our radio podcast anywhere, any time, on any platform, click here!
