Mike Harmeier is the lead singer and principal songwriter for his band Mike and the Moonpies. The Texas-based band has released eight studio albums including their most recent record One to Grow On which is an absolute masterwork. Their 2019 record Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold, recorded at Abbey Road studios and including the London Symphony Orchestra brought Mike and the Moonpies critical acclaim and scores of new listeners. They are known for their raucous live shows, Mike’s powerful lyrical imagery, and just being all around kind folks as you will see in this interview. Erika Wennerstrom dips into The Marinade. Erika's album "Sweet Unknown" was our favorite in a crowded 2018 field. After her band Heartless Bastards went on hiatus in 2015, Erika set out to find her next creative outlet. The result is a brilliant solo effort.

BJ Barham is the creative force behind one of my all time favorite bands American Aquarium. BJ was on my short list of dream guests when I started this thing back in 2016 and I was thrilled that he agreed to be my very first Marinade guest! 

American Aquarium released perhaps my favorite of their albums The Fear of Standing Still earlier this year. BJ is a man who is dedicated to his craft and each album showcases the growth he and his band have attained. He is an inspiration and I am honored to have gotten to know him a little over the years.

His illustrious career goes back to the late 80s. For many folks he is the best songwriter you’ve never heard of. For others he is the voice of multiple generations. His most recent record St. Paul’s Boulevard is my favorite thing he has done. McDermott builds a world and trusts himself and his collaborators to guide but not lead the listener. It’s an immersive experience much like this conversation with the man himself.

The Marinade with Jason Earle, a free-flowing conversation about the creative process, welcomes Ryan Sollee. Ryan is the principal singer and songwriter for The Builders and the Butchers. The Builders and the Butchers came into my life at a very formative time with their debut self-titled record in 2007. I was in my 20s, trying to figure out what adult me would look like- a little angsty, disillusioned yet hopeful, and curious about the world. Ryan Sollee’s tunes seemed to capture what I was feeling. 

All these years later, The Builders and the Butchers have a wonderful new record of foot-stomping anthems called Hell & High Water, which was released on May 6th, 2022. This conversation is such a thrill, y’all.

Darrell Scott goes to the River Marinade! Darrell's biography is too storied to describe here but the highlights include writing huge country hits for Travis Tritt and The Dixie Chicks, playing in Robert Plant's Band of Joy, and writing with the likes of Verlon Thompson and Guy Clark. He has lived an extraordinary creative life.

This is Episode 143 and our guest is Jenny Owen Youngs. Jenny is a singer, songwriter, author, and podcaster originally from New Jersey who now makes her home in Maine. This is Episode 122 and our guest is Langhorne Slim. Y’all, this is a special episode on several levels. I am so excited to bring you my intimate conversation with Slim but first we are going to do something a little different. We caught up with Langhorne Slim at the incredible Orange Blossom Revue festival in Lake Wales, FL, in December of 2022. Slim’s music has meant a lot to my dear friend and collaborator Jenn Ross who was fortunately covering the festival with me and was able to sit in on the conversation. Col. Bruce Hampton was a legendary musician, actor, producer, and all around nice guy. He was in Sling Blade, the Run the Jewels video for “Blockbuster Night Part 1,” Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and that’s just the tip of his IMDb page.

Col. Bruce was also a musical pioneer and one hell of a nice guy. I had the honor of interviewing Bruce backstage at Suwannee Roots Revival 2016.

This was one of the first episodes we recorded for The Marinade. A lot has changed since then, from production to interview style, but we want you all to have a chance to hear this wonderful conversation. As was his way, he made me feel like an old friend. Rest in peace, Col. Bruce.

Legendary songwriter James McMurtry takes a dip in The Marinade. McMurtry is the genius behind such tunes as "Levelland" and "We Can't Make it Here Anymore." His 2015 release Complicated Game is one of our favorites in recent memory and includes a song we can't seem to get out of our heads, "You Got to Me."

This is the lost Episode 50 and our guest is our host Jason Earle. One of Jason's earliest thought partners for what would become The Marinade was his good friend Peter Haroldson. Peter is a kind, hilarious, and wildly intelligent guy.

When The Marinade first began, the idea of getting to episode number 50 seemed like some far off abstraction. Would anyone even care about this thing? Well, thankfully a lot of y’all do care and before long episode 50 was a reality. The plan as suggested by Peter was that episode 50 would be an interview of the host. But, at the time of number 50 Peter had moved to Minnesota and then the world shut down due to the COVID-19 crisis. Finally, in October of 2021, Jason flew to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and sat down on the other side of the desk to answer questions from his friend.

This go ‘round we got to sit side-by-side in my Mazda SUV the day after Kern and the boys crushed their set at Tuffy’s Music Box in Sanford, FL. The Kernal’s latest record Listen to the Blood is the culmination of an idea Kern has been working on for several years, more about that in the conversation.

Sam Emerson Bodary is the lead singer and principal songwriter of Columbus, Ohio’s Hello Emerson. Hello Emerson’s latest record unpacks a serious car accident suffered by Bodary’s father. It is an examination of family and mortality in a way that makes both and their attendant themes seem more manageable than they might in practice. Kyle Keller is a singer and songwriter who currently makes his home in Gainesville, FL (Go Gators!) Kyle’s sophomore record The Great American Highway was released in the summer of 2023 and it’s a delight that gives and gives. So is the man himself as you will hear in this episode. I have known Kyle for several years. 

He and my dear friend Jordan Foley are very close and the three of us sat having tea and talking about life here in my beloved Milk District in Orlando then walked over to the porch of Barley and Vine Biergarten to record. It was a gorgeous April day that was a long time coming.

DL Rossi is a singer, songwriter, painter, all around creative who makes his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His latest record titled SDNIL is a huge and triumphant stylistic shift from the album of his that really got my attention, 2021’s Lonesome Kind. Rossi and I have been meaning to catch up for a while now and I am so grateful we made it happen. We talk about overcoming trauma, the soundtrack in your head, taking creative risks and so much more. This was an absolute blast and I am so excited to bring it your way.

We caught up at the Sing Out Loud Festival in St. Augustine Amphitheatre right after Chuck poured his heart out to an eager crowd. After seemingly leaving it all on stage, Chuck still gave us a solid half hour of insight into his creative process.
