They also discuss the 48 Hour Film Project, how to disagree civilly, how Barbie utilized the color pink and more.

Topics:

  • The Oliver Anthony phenomenon
  • Putting a period on the Alabama dock fight
  • How Mattel flipped the status quo on Branding & Marketing for the Barbie Movie
  • A discussion that asks, “Is Oppenheimer a good film?”
  • Celebrating the upcoming 48 Hour Film Festival
  • Producer Papa Bear stumps and educates us with an all-new48 Hour Film Fest version of Things We Should Know
  • Chris and Nick discuss the reach and power if Social Media Influencers in the latest Culture Check
  • and much more...

Questions answered in this episode:

  • How were social media influencers able to gather hundreds of kids to loot a JD Sports store in Oxford and thousands of kids in New York who ended up clashing with police?
  • What is the difference between how movies like Barbie were able to inspire positive behaviors vs how influencers are encouraging risky or illegal activities?
  • How can social media influence be used for good causes but also encourage harmful activities if not wielded responsibly?
  • What drives different types of young people to attend risky gatherings encouraged by influencers online?
  • How can parents monitor what their kids are watching online to prevent negative influences?
  • What role should social media platforms, influencers, and parents play in shaping social media culture responsibly?

Summary:

In this week's episode of The Make It Podcast, hosts Chris Barkley and Nicholas Buggs discussed the growing influence of social media and its potential negative impacts. They pointed to two recent incidents where social media was used to encourage large groups of young people to engage in risky or illegal behavior.

In one case, a TikTok video urged hundreds of kids to loot a JD Sports store in Oxford. In another, a Twitch streamer promised free PlayStation 5s, drawing over 1,000 people who ended up in a confrontation with police. The hosts argued this shows how social media "gods" or influencers, many of them children themselves, are able to move huge audiences to act in dangerous ways.

They contrasted this with how movies like Barbie were able to inspire positive behaviors like purchasing pink merchandise. The discussion highlighted the double-edged sword of social media - its ability to be used for good causes but also to encourage harmful activities if not wielded responsibly.

The hosts called on parents to monitor what their kids are watching online and advocated for more positive role models on social platforms. They also suggested that short films could explore what drives different types of young people to risky gatherings. Overall, the conversation raised important questions about the growing power of influencers and how to shape social media for the better.

Enjoy!

Indie Artist Spotlight

Artist: Goodvibes Sound

Track: I've Been Here Before

Goodvibes Sound are Alex and Angus, two friends who live in London and record out of their basement studio in a former corner shop. They make disco-infused indie pop, with lyrical themes touching on love, mindfulness, and modern life in the city. "I’ve Been Here Before" explores this back-and-forth that we all experience throughout life. While the lyrics discuss feelings of isolation and loneliness, the contrast between mellow verses and catchy high-energy choruses evokes this repetitive cycle.

04 Aug 2021198 - Alexis Gambis - Film, Science, Art , and Sundance Award-Winning Filmmaking01:12:56

Hello, Indie Creatives!

In this episode, we have a conversation with Filmmaker and Biologist Alexis Gambis (@agambis on IG, @alexisgambis on Twitter). We talk about his films 'Son of Monarchs,' 'The Color of Time,' 'The Fly Room,' and 'The Next Jaguar.' His "Netflix of Science" platform, Labocine, how Spike Lee became a mentor and investor, CRISPR, how winning at Sundance changed his life, and his annual film festival, Imagine Science (and so much more). Enjoy!

More About Alexis Gambis (www.alexisgambis.com)

Alexis Gambis is a French-Venezuelan filmmaker and biologist. His films combine documentary and fiction, often embracing animal perspectives and experimenting with new forms of scientific storytelling.

His second feature “Son of Monarchs” delves into issues of identity, (im)migration, and evolution. The Mexican-American narrative premiered at Sundance in 2021 in the NEXT category and was awarded the Sloan Feature Film Prize. It received the Grand Jury Prize of the New American Competition at the 2021 Seattle International Film Festival. Screen Daily called the film “a visually flamboyant film...a daring mosaic which floats like a butterfly.

Alexis founded the Imagine Science Film Festival that is celebrating its 14th year of showcasing the latest science filmmaking from around the world. Five years ago, he launched the sister platform Labocine, a virtual ecosystem showing curated science cinema online and sparking collaborations between scientists, artists, and educators.

Alexis’ TED Talk proposes a new manifesto around science and cinema, referred to as the Science New Wave, that celebrates diversity, hybridity, and collaboration in scientific storytelling. He is currently working on his next feature “The Next Jaguar” that merges pressing issues about animal endangerment, climate change, and indigenous rights.

Hello, Hello!

Topics discussed:

- Andrea's background and film/TV credits

- The inspiration and creation of the Hero Maker podcast

- Challenges in developing the story as a TV show and pivoting to a podcast

- Details of the unsolved double-murder case of her friends in college

- Impact of trauma and how it affects more than just immediate family/friends

- Andrea's persistence in telling this story through different mediums

- Potential for a $2 million grant coming from the podcast's impact

- Andrea's future projects: feature films and teaching courses

Enjoy!

Questions answered in this episode:

  •  How did The Hero Maker podcast come to be after initially being developed as a TV show?
  • What are the details around the college murders of Andrea's friends that inspired the podcast?
  • How has the podcast aimed to make a positive impact beyond just telling the story?

About Andrea:

Andrea has helped bring 11 narrative feature films and 4 documentary features to completion in various professional capacities, including as an Executive Producer on FUEL which won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at Sundance. She is a Founding Executive for Mobile Magic Studios, a one minute movie studio that sold five series into distribution. Andrea started in network television, with two years on The Nanny, two years on Daddy Dearest and one season on Rockstar INXS for CBS. She has written and directed films, campaigns, commercials, music videos and live streams all revolving around relevant themes for social growth including; domestic violence, addiction, climate change and mental health awareness.

Summary:

This episode of the MAKE IT Podcast features Andrea Shreeman, creator and co-host of The Hero Maker podcast. The Hero Maker podcast tells the true story of the murders of Andrea's friends in college and the impact it had on their community.

Andrea shared how the story began as a potential TV show but pivoted to a podcast during the pandemic. Through two seasons, the podcast has focused on honoring the victims and exploring the ripple effects of such a tragic event. The hosts interview people directly involved like investigators, attorneys, and family members to get a full perspective.

The podcast aims to leave a positive impact beyond just telling the story. Andrea was moved that the podcast could help facilitate such meaningful change.

While true crime stories can celebrate the criminal, The Hero Maker podcast lifts up the real people affected. Nick appreciated how it shows the vast network impacted by even one violent crime. Andrea wants to use her platform to spread healing and understanding for all touched by such trauma.

Through perseverance, The Hero Maker podcast is finding an engaged audience and making a difference. For anyone with an important story to share, Andrea's example shows the impact that can come from refusing to give up.

14 Dec 201820 - Matt Williams - Overcoming Self Doubt, Putting in the Work, & Mastering Your Craft01:01:00

“People like the idea of being an artist more than the idea of practicing and becoming the absolute best.” - Matt Williams

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

On this week’s episode of The MAKE IT Podcast, we have a conversation with award-winning Actor, Matt Williams (@mattwilliamsinc).⠀⠀⠀⠀

In 2015, Matt starred in the award-winning short film,  'Everyday Yeti' written and directed by Motke Dapp, in which he was nominated for Best Actor.

The following year, Matt teamed up with Dapp again, in the short film 'Lessons In Accidental Magic,' which won over a dozen awards, including a Best Actor nod for Matt.

Matt is also known for his roles in films such as 'Shaken Not Stirred,' 'Introverts Anonymous' and the improvised performance art mocumentary, 'Pieces.' He has made an appearance on CMT’s Nashville, and starred in the hit web series WTF?!, as well as appearing in commercials for brands such as Toyota, Valvoline, Zappos, Cotton: The Fabric of Our Lives, ADS Security, Cox Business and Sport Clips, among others.

Later in 2016, Matt joined the Third Coast Comedy Training Center, where he quickly fell in love with the art of improvisation, leading Matt to create his troupe, The Varsity. The Varsity can be seen performing periodically at Third Coast Comedy Club in Nashville, TN.

Matt is also the co-founder of Nashville Underground Radio, which he co-founded in 2012, and the co-founder of Nashville Underground Management, a company, focused on signing and garnering publishing deals, television appearances and song placements for up-and-coming artists.

23 Dec 2022Happy Holidays! (And, Thoughts About Our New Release Schedule)00:01:42

Hello, Hello!

Chris here with a short message of thanks to our esteemed listeners and supporters.

It's been a fantastic year for MAKE IT, and that's thanks to you for your engagement and support. If you have not noticed, Nick and I decided to try something new with the release schedule.

Longform podcast episodes are now published every eleven days instead of every seven days. That means episodes will populate your feed some weeks on Tuesday and other weeks on Friday.

Our instinct behind the change is to give you more time to take in the long-form episodes, hopefully preventing bottlenecks. We'd love to hear if it's working for you. Should we keep this new format or go back to the way it was? Please let us know!

As always, you can reach out to us on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok @_bonsaicreative and YouTube and Facebook by searching for "MAKE IT Bonsai Creative."

If email is easier, hit us up at contact@bonsai.film.

In the meantime, we hope you're enjoying the latest Indie Talk, and stay tuned for an entertaining and informative upcoming interview to wrap up the year on December 27th. Happy Holidays, and as always, Be Better, Be Creative, Be Engaged.

And thank you for listening!

The MAKE IT podcast is brought to you by the Voice of the Filmmaker program, which is sponsored by Women in Film and Television, Nashville (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization).

09 Nov 201815 - Actor Jessejames Locorriere - How to Leverage Your Individuality and Create a Work-Life Balance01:49:03

“There are no more Jack Nicholson's. There are no more Marlon Brando's.” - Jessejames Locorriere⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

On this week's episode, we have a conversation with Jessejames Locorriere.

Jessejames is an actor and proud father, and we painted outside the lines a bit in this episode and chat about music, the mentorship of William H. Macy, the odd genius of Joaquin Phoenix, and we ponder the idea of Marlon Brando being a meme.

Jessejames acting career began nearly to 40 years ago when he started his studies at the Lee Strasberg Acting Institute in Manhattan at the age of eight. Years later, he went on to study with the Atlantic Theater Companies’ Practical Aesthetics Workshop at New York University.

Currently, you can watch Jessejames as “Henry” in the second season of Ozark (Netflix).
In the coming months, you’ll be able to catch him in the first episode of Dolly Parton Theater (Netflix), The Dead Center, a feature film recently acquired by Arrow Films, and soon he will be making an extraordinary appearance in The Escape Game’s interactive gaming experience, nationally.

Jessejames resides in Nashville, TN, where he teaches acting workshops and coaches actors for film/television.

More About Chris Haley

Director, The Study of the Legacy of Slavery at the Maryland State Archives, Director of the Utopia Film Festival, and Annapolis Pride, Annapolis Film Festival, Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation Board member, he is a recent recipient of the Anne Arundel County Arts Council 2021 Literary Arts Award recipient and co-director of the Capital Region Emmy nominated documentary, 'Unmarked', and author of two books of poetry currently available on Amazon, 'Until The Right One Comes Along', and, 'Obsessions'. If I Could (As read during the conversation)

If I could die

For just a little while,

And briefly take a break,

If I could close my mind,

My consciousness,

Meditate on a lake.

If I could dial down the volume

Of voices

Screaming daily woes,

If I could gently close my eyes,

No tears, no cries,

No nightmares to hide,

I think I would feel better.

My passion would return.

I’d breathe a life renewed,

My candle not all burned.

 And dreams would reawaken me

To the future I’d once yearned, of

Grand occasions,

Oscar nominations,

Standing ovations,

Devoted fans –

 A beloved man –

Beautifully free of strife.

If I could wake to that

I’d beat this desperate rap,

Dash my suicidal sway;

I’d drink life’s sap

I’d safely nap

I would not end today

-Chris Haley
