08 Jun 2020 | Tom Hill's Amazing Journey to the WTA Tour and Coaching Greek Star Maria Sakkari | 01:12:11
As one of the youngest coaches on the WTA Tour, Tom Hill also has one of the most interesting back stories. Find out how Hill went from nearly attending law school to the top of the WTA coaching ranks in a few years' time.
At the end of his college days, Hill was relaxing and working on finishing up his degree, thinking that his tennis career may well and truly be over. Then he got a phone call from Maria Sharapova's agent Max Eisenbud, and everything changed.
In this edition of the Lucky Letcord Podcast, Chris Oddo chats with Hill about that important phone call and how it reeled him back into the sport, where he would turn a short-time gig as a hitting partner into first coaching gig with American Danielle Collins.
Hill talks about getting a phone call from Collins late in 2017 when he had already taken an advertising job back in the UK. Collins needed a coach to go to Auckland. Hill, meanwhile, had worked up a plan to work in advertising for a year to pay for law school...
How could he resist Collins' offer?
He did not.
The pair went on a six-month tear that saw Collins truly arrive on tour, firmly inside the Top 50.
After a split Hill picked up with Maria Sakkari, as an assistant coach alongside Swedish legend Thomas Johansson. We talk to Hill about how much he learned from Johansson and how it informs him as a coach today.
Of course we speak to Hill about Top 20 player Maria Sakkari, asking him what makes the Greek player special and how high he thinks she can go.
Hill also gives his input on the importance of scouting and analytics, the rumors of a WTA/ATP merger and more.
Thanks to coach Hill for his time and thanks to all for listening.

14 Jul 2020 | Talking WTA - ATP Merger with Bret McCormick of Sports Business Journal | 00:41:57
Today on the Lucky Letcord Podcast Bret McCormick of the Sports Business Journal joins host Chris Oddo to share his insights on what a potential WTA/ATP merger would look like.
Talk of a potential merger between the tours bubbled over in late April when Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal took to Twitter to show their support for a union of the tours. Since then many important names in the sport of joined in, including WTA founder Billie Jean King.
But with all the pressing matters that the powers that be in tennis need to tend to of late, as the coronavirus rages, conversation has slipped to the back burner.
That's why we brought McCormick in. He's been talking to people behind the scenes about this topic for a while now, and in late June he released his article on the subject, which can be found here:
https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2020/06/29/Leagues-and-Governing-Bodies/Tennis.aspx
Have a listen and get hip to the nuances of the relationship between the tour and how a union might affect sponsorships, TV rights and the media enterprises that are owned and operated by both factions.
Who would benefit? How can it happen? Is it even possible?

10 Feb 2023 | Aleks Kovacevic on rising up the rankings and never being satisfied | 00:26:31
This week the Lucky Letcord Podcast welcomes special guest Aleks Kovacevic.
A former NCAA All-American at Illinois, Kovacevic has transitioned seamlessly to the ATP Tour over the last 18 months. He was 370 in the rankings this time last year but now sits at 125 -- a stone's throw from the top 100 -- after claiming his maiden challenger title in Cleveland on Sunday.
Host Chris Oddo talks to the 24-year-old about the difficulties of transitioning into the pro game and the highs and lows of his first formative months on tour.
We run through Kovacevic's journey to South Korea last year, where he made his ATP debut in Seoul and powered into the semifinals with wins over Miomir Kecmanovic, Jason Tseng and Mackenzie McDonald.
It's not so much about hitting a high level, Kovacevic tells the podcast, it's about hitting a high level consistently.
Kovacevics talks about his difficult trip to Australia this year and then reflects on what it was like watching his good friends JJ Wolf and Ben Shelton battle for a spot in the quarterfinals in Melbourne. Naturally, there were some mixed emotions but ultimately the rise of the American men is giving Kovacevic reason to believe he can soon be there too.
We also get an inside view on the emotional pitfalls of spending life on the road full-time, and get a coaching update.
Thanks to Aleks for joining and thanks to y'all for listening!!!!

01 Sep 2020 | "Greatness Revisited:" Steve Flink on the Legendary Pete Sampras (Part 2) | 01:08:19
Today on the Lucky Letcord Podcast host Chris Oddo is joined by Tennis author, journalist and historian Steve Flink. A member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Flink has been covering tennis full time since 1974. He has recently written a book about Pete Sampras, entitled "Greatness Revisited."
You can buy the book on Amazon here
You can learn more about Hall of Famer Steve Flink here
On this episode we pick up part two of our interview with Flink and cover Sampras' career from 1994 until retirement and beyond.
Steve tells us why he chose to tell the story of Sampras, a legendary talent that he has developed an exceptional rapport with.
We learn about how and why Sampras was able to dominate Wimbledon like no other player during his heyday and run through some of his most memorable matches.
We delve deeper into the difficulties that Sampras faced over the course of his career, from losing his coach Tim Gullickson to cancer, to the immense mental and physical pressure he put himself under.
We entertain a discussion of what it would be like to see Sampras face the members of tennis' Big Three -- Federer, Djokovic and Nadal -- and discuss what the many legends Flink interviewed, including Sampras himself, had to say about it.
Would Sampras handle Federer on grass?
Who would present more problems for Pete's serve -- Agassi or Djokovic?
Would Rafa do to Sampras what he has done to Federer?
Steve has done numerous interview with Sampras for the book, and done a great job of unlocking elements of the typically reclusive Sampras' personality. We chat about the origins of their rapport and Steve gives his expert opinion on Sampras the man and Sampras the player.
It's always a great pleasure to hear Steve talk about tennis, but to hear him talk about a subject that is so near and dear to him has been truly enlightening.
Enjoy the podcast, and when you're done make your way to the bookstore to learn more about one of the greatest tennis players to ever lift a racquet.
Thanks to Steve for writing a great book and for taking the time to speak with us about it!

29 Jan 2024 | Sinner Sails, Sabalenka Storms! 2024 AO in Review | 00:38:59
Richard Pagliaro and Erik Gudris join host Chris Oddo to recap the 2024 Australian Open.
We commence with a brief convo of late night finishes in Melbourne. Can anything be done to limit the damage of players staying on court until after 3 AM at the majors?
Then we proceed into a breakdown of a player who was impacted by such madness - Daniil Medvedev. What can the Russian do to get over the hump at the majors, and how can he get through a Slam with more fuel in his tank. Medvedev famously spent 24:17 on court, a new record for time on court at a major, and dropped a two sets to love lead in the final as the fatigue set in.
Of course we move to Jannik Sinner next. What makes him special and what does his title run mean for the shape of the ATP season? Does he have a shot at No.1? What, specifically, made his performance a cut above the rest of the field, and is it repeatable?
On to the women, we talk about the wild chaos in the top half of the women's draw? Is it a sign of cracks in the armor of the top players, or yet another indication of the supreme depth of the WTA Tour?
Then, to Aryna Sabalenka and her breathtaking, unblemished run to the title. What can we say about her that hasn't already been said? A few things, it turns out.
Finally we look at China's Zheng Qinwen and what made her run to the final special. Yes, she didn't take out a Top 50 player en route to the final, and that is rare, but that doesn't mean she isn't deserving.
And finally, a list of things that made the fortnight special. Things that may have been lost in the blur of a final weekend that captivated us and gave us tunnel vision. Remember Arthur Cazaux? Rohan Bopanna? Hsieh Su-Wei? We do...

03 Feb 2022 | Rafael Nadal and Ash Barty Make History Down Under! | 00:53:05
Rafael Nadal is a 21-time champion and Tennis Hall of Famer Steve Flink joins Richard Pagliaro and host Chris Oddo to break down the Spaniard's historic achievement on Sunday.
But we don't begin until Nadal chatter until we break down Ash Barty's magical run to the title on Saturday. Barty set the tone for a very special weekend at the Australian Open when she defeated Danielle Collins to become the first Aussie to capture a singles title at Melbourne since 1978.
We discuss the extraordinary talents of Barty, and take a close look at her serve and her tactics, which made her virtually unstoppable as she rolled to the title without dropping a set.
Once Barty was given her due we did a deep dive into the Nadal Medvedev final, which featured the Spaniard's third comeback from two sets down at a Slam and just fourth overall - but coming back from two sets down was a feat he had never accomplished in a Slam final.
So how did Nadal do it?
And what could Medvedev have down to stop him?
And, finally, where does Nadal's triumph put him with regard to Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer? Obviously it was a massive win for his legacy, but how big?

What happened? Well the crap hit the fan in Melbourne as not one, not two but THREE planes produced Covid-19 positive tests, meaning that 72 players and about 200 people in total have gone into HARD quarantine.
We discuss the fallout.
Did Tennis Australia properly prepare the players for a worst case scenario?
How are these players going to survive this and come out of quarantine at the end of January? Will they be handicapped in a big way against the rest of the field?
What is the situation like in Adelaide, where Novak Djokovic and other elite players are doing a much "softer" version of quarantine? How is that even fair and is this perceived and real inequity about to take center stage now that the quarantine news in Melbourne is all sorted out?
With a lot of time on their hands players have been pushing the creative envelope on social media -- who are some of our favorite posters? We name names.
We do our best to bring you all up to speed with what players are saying, thinking and feeling, and of course, how the Australian people are reacting to the madness -- and why they are tired of hearing the players whine!
Enjoy and thanks for listening!

29 Jan 2020 | Steve Flink: Dominic Thiem Takes Flight with Upset over Nadal | 00:26:13
The semis are set at the 2020 Australian Open and we are celebrating an amazing first ten days of the tournament by chatting with tennis Hall of Famer Steve Flink.
We catch up with Steve to get his take on Dominic Thiem's massive takedown of Rafael Nadal on Day 10.
"It was a beauty," says Flink. "You have to look at this as another step--a serious step--in the evolution of Thiem as an all-surface player who is really going to be challenging for majors this year. Not just this one or Roland Garros but everywhere, with perhaps the exception of Wimbledon."
We talk about the crucial turning points of the match and what it might mean for Thiem going into the semis.
We discuss the performance of Nadal and how he could have easily won this match if a few more big points went his way.
And what to make of Thiem's nerves at the finish and the sway of Nadal v Thiem as a rivalry moving forward?
The discussion then moves to Roger Federer and his match point miracle on Day 9. Will Federer have anything left as he prepares to take on Djokovic tonight? And what about Alexander Zverev? The German is the biggest surprise of the tournament, can he be a factor moving forward?
WE also discuss the womens' side of the draw and what makes Ash Barty's run so special on home soil. We chat about the surging Sofia Kenin and why she's a future Top 10 force--but will she be an elite Top 5 talent?
And of course we can not overlook the resurgence of Garbine Muguruza.
There's a lot to cover ahead of today's Australian Open semifinals, and we did our best to cover it all in about 20 minutes. Thanks for listening, and don't forget to check Steve's work at Tennis.com! You can find that here: https://www.tennis.com/pro-game/list/steve-flink/?page=3&

Today on the Lucky Letcord Podcast, Chris Oddo is joined by his colleagues at Tennis Now, Richard Pagliaro and Erik Gudris. The trio breaks down a superb opening week of tennis and looks forward to the upcoming Australian Open.
Here are the topics we dive into:
Tennys Sandgren tests positive for Covid but still flies to Melbourne, what's up with that?
An elite quarantine in Adelaide, featuring Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and others. Is it fair and what was Tennis Australia's motivation to throw this wrinkle into the plan?

Should we all be jumping on the Sebastian Korda bandwago pronto, or is prudence the better option? Erik and Richard give their take on what there is to like about Sebastian Korda and Chris mentions the intangibles, which could be why he is ahead of his peers at the young age of 20.
Christian Harrison played amazing tennis, but it kind of got swallowed up by the fact that he's not into wearing masks. We discuss what happened with the American in Delray Beach, praise his amazing performance, and Chris admits that he is torn between loving Harrison and not loving the anti-mask.
Erik leads a break down of some of the many interesting names that managed to qualify this year at the Australian Open. You'll love this discussion.
Last but not least -- Why did Dayana Yastremska, who has been provisionally suspended, jump on plane to Melbourne?
Enjoy the show and thanks for listening!

On Sofia Kenin
"To come from triple break point down and hit the five gutsiest and greatest shots of your life in a row, in succession, against a two-time Grand Slam champion and former World No.1 and just to lay it all out there at the moment when you need it the most--it blew my mind and it must have blew Muguruza's mind as well too, because it was just incredible that she was able to produce at that level, under that pressure. Just unbelievable."
Pagliaro adds: "Her ability to time the ball and take the ball on the rise, I think it's really unsettling for players."
On Garbine Muguruza:
"I do think it is the beginning of a building year--look you climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, majors seem like a speedbump compared to that."
"I think it is a breakthrough tournament for her."
"She's more of an all-court player than I think she gets credit for."
On Novak Djokovic
"If he didn't have that elbow injury I think he'd be at 20 majors right now," Pagliaro says of Novak Djokovic.
Pagliaro adds: "His strength of character and stamina might be his most underrated virtue. ... he will be the Grand Slam king in my view."
On Dominic Thiem
"What he did was build upon the promise that he showed us all at Indian Wells when he beat Roger in the finals to break through there, he showed us that his game is transferable, that he's not a one-surface champion, that he can do it on hard court." Pagliaro says.
"What he showed me is that he was able to flip the switch through a lot of turmoil and hard times," says Pagliaro, who points out that Thiem had a rough go at ATP Cup and things could have become more complicated when he fired Thomas Muster as his co-coach midway through the tournament.

Next we discuss about Dominic Thiem and make the case for the Austrian becoming the ATP's 27th No.1.

30 Jun 2023 | Wimbledon Preview: Nole's the Man, but is Iga the Woman? | 00:53:17
In this week's special preview podcast, Erik Gudris and Richard Pagliaro join Chris Oddo to look ahead to the Wimbledon fortnight.
Here are the topics we canvas:
Can we really read anything into the grass court warm up results as indicators before Wimbledon? Maybe it’s recency bias but I have my eyes on Keys / Kasatkina. I’d say yes. Huge experience for Alcaraz/ Swiatek/ I think you can pick out positives, and maybe not sweat the negatives.
The draw’s out, did it change anything about the way you view this Wimbledon playing out? To me it worked in Swiatek’s favor a bit because the bottom half is stacked.
Is Djokovic the best men’s grass-court player in history if he wins this title? Federer 192-29 on grass with 19 titles. Djokovic 109-18 with eight titles.
DJOKOVIC 3-1 VS FEDERER AT GRASS AND 3-0 VS FEDERER IN WIMBLEDON FINALS
Has Swiatek played herself into favorite status with her performance at Bad Homburg?
How is this year’s draw different, with Russian and Belarusian players in the mix again? How will Wimbledon’s decision to allow them to play impact the fortnight?
What is your most outrageous pick for a run to the semis or beyond?
How much has Alcaraz improved on grass – and as a player in general – since last Wimbledon? Won his final 10 sets at Queens. Using the slice. Returning aggression.
Is Medvedev a tad overlooked as a grass-court talent? 35-19 with a title on grass. 8-4 at Wimbledon, missed last year but made second week for the first time in 2021 (Hurkacz)
Can we expect anything from Berrettini or Kyrgios?
What do we make of Venus Williams and what does it mean for Wimbledon to have her in the draw?
What do we think of Wozniacki’s comeback? 30 titles No.1 for 71 weeks Slam champion going to be 33. physicality???!!!
Your favorite first-rounder, men’s and women’s?
You’re favorite potential round of 16 matchup and why? (just one) Jabeur v Kvitova or Muchova v Sabalenka
You’re winners and why? (men’s and women’s)
Does Gauff have a better shot at Swiatek on grass than any other surface? Has lost all 14 sets against her… (AND ONLY ONCE WON MORE THAN FOUR GAMES IN A SET V IGA)

17 Aug 2020 | Steve Flink on his Book "Greatness Revisited" and Pete Sampras' Rise to Glory | 00:54:59
You can buy the book on Amazon here
You can learn more about Hall of Famer Steve Flink here
On this episode we discuss the formative years of Pete Sampras and his initial foray into greatness.
Steve tells us why he chose to tell the story of Sampras, a legendary talent that he has developed an exceptional rapport with.
We learn about Sampras' early years under the tutelage of his dad and the unconventional Pete Fischer, and find out why Sampras changed from a two-handed backhand to a one-handed backhand so late in his development.
We discuss some of Sampras' early rivals, and how they initially had the upper hand with the late-blooming American, such as Andre Agassi and Michael Chang.
We look at Sampras' momentous 1990 US Open, where he won his maiden major title and became the youngest men's singles winner in the tournament's history. We focus on his extremely difficult path to the title, which saw him face Thomas Muster, Ivan Lendl (who had played eight consecutive finals in New York), John McEnroe (a four-time champion) and Andre Agassi in his final four matches.
Steve answers my questions about the elements that made Sampras such a unique player, like his ability to deliver big match tennis in finals and his incredibly humble nature, which allowed him to continue his improvement even when he was already a proven champion.
We touch on Sampras' greatest influence in his early career, coach Tim Gullickson, and how the relationship originated, and we look at how difficult it was for Sampras to back up his US Open title in 1990 - something that he was unable to do for nearly three years.
We stop our conversation after Sampras has won three straight majors, in early 1994, and plan to pick it up with part 2 of this podcast later next week.
Thanks to Steve for writing a great book and for taking the time to speak with us about it!

09 Jul 2020 | Corentin Moutet: The Music, the Passion, the Tennis | 00:45:50
Corentin Moutet is amazing with a racquet in his hands, but equally amazing when he exchanges that racquet for a microphone. The 21-year-old Frenchman joined the Lucky Letcord Podcast to talk about how he dealt with the difficulty of quarantine by diving into his passion for music like he never had before.
The World No.75 always had a love for music (He loves the classic French lyricists like Jacques Brel and Charles Azvenour), but he didn't bring his own flavor to the world with force until the coronavirus pandemic shut down tennis and gave him the time to fully put his heart and soul into it.
The result is two new singles, which can be found by checking his all music Instagram page:
Corentin Moutet on Genius.com
We caught up with Moutet while he was staying in the South of France and training for the Ultimate Tennis Showdown.
Moutet gave us his views on what French music and literature mean to him, and how he came to write his first single about his brother. As it turns out Moutet was finally was in Paris, with nothing but time, but quarantine still kept the pair apart. He says he wrote the song in about two hours.
Moutet also gives his views on racial equality, a topic that he dedicated his second single to. The Frenchman is one of the white voices that has stepped up to support the movement. He tells us he simply can't understand why people get treated differently in this world just on the basis of skin color. It's ridiculous, he says.
We also talk about tennis, including Moutet's mental game and his feelings about the Ultimate Tennis Showdown. Does he like doing four interviews per match with commentators? His answer might surprise you.
Enjoy the interview and keep an eye out for this player. He's got a way with words and a way with the racquet...

09 Sep 2020 | Robert Weintraub on the Divine Miss Marble | 00:51:41
Authur Robert Weintraub joins Chris Oddo to discuss his book about legendary American tennis star Alice Marble.
By the book here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/607526/the-divine-miss-marble-by-robert-weintraub/
Far from a 6-4 5-7 6-3 tennis book, Weintraub's novel tells the tale of a fascinating woman, who at the height of her powers was not only one of the greatest tennis players in history, she was also a mysterious figure who dabbled among the Hollywood elite and spent time away from the sport earning a living as a singer.
Of course we learn of Marble's playing days, from her formative years on Golden Gate Park to her days at the US Open and Wimbledon where, under the tutelage of Eleanor Tenant, she became the game's most celebrated female player in the late 1930's.
But the story is about much more than Marble as a tennis figure. Weintraub's main mission is to attempt to unravel the mystery of Marble, who wrote in her posthumous autobiography "Courting Danger" that she had been involved in a spy mission during World War II.
Marble says she was recruited as a spy for the United States and that she ended up obtaining valuable information by renewing her affair with a former lover, Hans Steinmetz; this is where Weintraub the sleuth comes in and the reader follows Marble's tale, which also involves a pregnancy and a miscarriage, with the unborn baby's father being shot down in the way.
Weintraub does his best to confirm the veracity of Marble's claims, while also weaving what is most definitely true about this alluring American legend into an entertaining tale that, in the end, lets the reader decide on what may or may not have really happened.
Thanks to Robert for the enlightening chat!

10 Jun 2020 | Deep Dive: Celebrating the 30-Year Anniversary of Andres Gomez's Shining Moment in Paris | 00:43:23
Today on deep dives we take a closer look at the amazing title run of Andres Gomez at Roland Garros in 1990.
Chris Oddo culls together interviews with Ecuadorian legend Gomez himself, as well as his son Juan Andres, his nephew Nicolas Lapentti, his compatriot and teammate Raul Viver, his ATP peer Brad Gilbert and tennis Hall of Fame historian and journalist Steve Flink.
We take a closer look at what made Gomez such a lethal force on clay.
We wonder just how difficult it was for a player of 30 to reach the pinnacle of the sport 30 years ago.
We hear about Gomez's roots, from a young kid in Guayaquil, Ecuador who couldn't get enough tennis and who had a poster of Bjorn Borg on his wall, to a teenager practicing under the supervision of the legendary Harry Hopman, to a top pro and, eventually, a Grand Slam champion.
Of course we look at Gomez's momentous victory over the rising American Andre Agassi in the final, and look at how all the pundits were tabbing the American for the win.
Finally we look at Gomez the family man. How his wife helped him reach his full potential, and how they shared the moment with their first of five children in Paris, experiencing an unforgettable moment inside of Court Philippe Chatrier for all the world to see, and for Ecuador to fully embrace.

14 Jan 2020 | The Miomir Kecmanovic Episode | 00:15:59
Today on the Lucky Letcord Podcast we are throwing the spotlight on a rising star of the ATP -- Miomir Kecmanovic.
Currently the fourth highest-ranked player aged 20 and under on the ATP Tour, Kecmanovic has already reached an ATP semifinal in 2020. He did that in Doha, just weeks after breaking camp in Dubai where he spent the off-season training with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
We hear from Kecmanovic from Dubai, where he gives his thoughts on what it is like to practice with the legends of the game and why he was able to have so much success in 2019, a season that saw him rise from outside the Top 130 to inside the Top 50 for a spell.
Kecmanovic also talks about his time in Tenerife with Dominic Thiem and why he feels he was able to have a successfull 2019 campaign. The Serb won 24 matches on tour last season and reached his first ATP final as well as qualifying for the final four at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan. He also won three matches at the Grand Slam level and set himself up for a push to the Top 30 (his goal) in 2020.
We mix in conversation with Kecmanovic with an interview with Jimmy Arias the Director of Tennis at the IMG Tennis Academy.
Arias knows Kecmanovic well (the Serb trains at IMG and is represented by them), and he talks about his first impression of Kecmanovic (which is a hilarious story) and where he thinks the young Serb can take his game.
Thanks for listening to this edition of the podcast and thanks to Miomir and Jimmy for taking part!

22 Jul 2024 | Djokovic's Next Mission? Alcaraz and Sinner's Future - Wimbledon Review with Steve Flink | 01:09:38
Today on the Lucky Letcord Podcast tennis Hall of Famer Steve Flink stops by to break down his thoughts on Novak Djokovic's 2024 season.
It has a season that has not met the 24-time major champion's lofty standards, but Flink believes that we have not seen the best of the Serbian legend in 2024. He gives his thoughts on Djokovic's performance at Wimbledon, and his 2024 in general, and points ahead to this year's US Open.
Flink also talks about the remarkable rise of Carlos Alcaraz, and singles out a key contributor to the Spaniard's stunning summer.
And where does it all leave World No.1 Jannik Sinner? Flink, who has just returned from his 55th Wimbledon, has thoughts on that as well.
We also look at the women's side, which was wide open this year, and featured a feel good final between Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini in the final. Nothing against the matchup, but Flink would prefer to see the top players in the women's game performing better at Wimbledon? Why were they not in the mix on finals weekend this year, and will Iga Swiatek ever find her footing on the grass.
Finally we conclude with the performance of the American men and women at Wimbledon as we look at head to the summer and the US Open.

26 Mar 2020 | Alison Riske on Coping with the Coronavirus Pandemic and the Importance of Couch Time | 00:22:27
It has been a strange, surreal two and a half weeks since Indian Wells was cancelled and the global grip of the Coronavirus pandemic ended sports—and life—as we know it. Three weeks into a shutdown that could last for a devastatingly long time we caught up with World No.19 Alison Riske to talk about what the experience has been like from a player’s perspective.
***INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 3:45***
Alison Riske on Twitter
Alison Riske on Instagram
Alison Riske's WTA Profile
Riske is a consummate pro. She has notched seven consecutive Top 100 finishes and is sitting just one spot shy of her career-best ranking of 18. She was also in line to qualify for a spot in the 2020 Olympic Games as the fourth-ranked American, but that dream is also on hold as the IOC announced the postponement of the games on Tuesday, just a day before we reached Riske at her home in Orlando where she is making the most of her time at home with her husband Stephen Amritraj.
As the 29-year-old Pennsylvania native points out, we are all in this together, and while her practice and playing routine has been shattered for the foreseeable future she is intent upon making the most of her time away from the tour and is continuing the mental growth that has enabled her to blossom as a player over the last few seasons.
Tune in to hear Riske’s thoughts on the difficulties of training when there is no official return date in sight, how she feels about the Olympic postponement, who she is leaning on for support and information during the crisis, what books and movies she is currently binging and why she is happy to enjoy a luxury that is incredibly rare for a professional tennis player—couch time!

On this edition of the Lucky Letcord Podcast host Chris Oddo is joined by tennis journalist, author and historian Joel Drucker at the historic Berkeley Tennis Club in Northern California.
We begin the interview with a bit of a rundown of the club's history. As it turns out we happened to be sitting by a two-foot tall photo of the great Helen Wills Moody, a 19-time major winner who used to play that the club, which was founded in 1906.
We move into a deep dive into the career and legacy of the recently retired Maria Sharapova, discussing:
The gut reaction to Sharapova's announcement
Sharapova's earning power and how that will pay into her legacy.
Sharapova as Claypova -- what made her so special on the clay surface in her 20s?
Meldonium and the ban -- what does it all mean?
Sharapova's inability to win against Serena -- does it say more about Maria or Serena?
Sharapova's competitiveness, where does it rank?
In the second half of the podcast we discuss Joel's career in tennis, from his formative years as a young player in Southern California to his early days in tennis journalism, when Jimmy Connors became his spirit animal.
We also talk about both of Drucker's books, "Jimmy Connors Saved My Life" and "Don't Bet On It" and the process that he went through in each.
There's a discussion about today's tennis media, the use--or overuse--of analytics, and what tennis could potentially look like in 2030.
All the while, Drucker sprinkles in the wit, wisdom and historical perspective that has made him one of the premier tennis journalists for over three decades.

11 May 2020 | What Will it Take for the 2020 Tennis Season to Resume without Spectators? | 00:47:26
Tennis without spectators?
It is the new reality facing the sport in 2020 as the Coronavirus Pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the health and economies of nations across the globe.
Today on the Lucky Letcord Podcast, Bret McCormick joins to talk about his article on the subject, and some of the findings he has made about the feasibility of playing the tour without its fans in attendance.
What we learned:
It's not as simple as it sounds.
There are new costs associated with keeping the on-site officials and players safe and they will impact bottom lines.
Perhaps even more important is the fact that tennis' sponsorship deals are built around on-site presence, and this will also make things more difficult for tennis moving forward into a world of events without fans.
McCormick thinks that deep-pocketed events will have a much easier time of moving forward without spectators and at least recouping some potential losses with television revenues and the sponsorships associated with those events.
These are the factors that tour organizers must assess to the very best of their ability before taking off on this brave new course. They must also consider what type of bad press would come from a setback and the risk of losing market share in a sporting world in which other sports move forward without spectators.

16 May 2022 | Michael Mmoh - Winner of the USTA's Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge Has Found the Spark | 00:25:20
Enjoy our interview with Michael Mmoh - winner of the USTA's Roland-Garros wild card in 2022. Below is a snippet of our feature on Michael, for more info go to www.tennisnow.com!
As a top junior, Michael Mmoh knows a thing or two about heavy expectations. He was the No.2-ranked junior in 2015, pushing for junior Slam titles and thought of as one of the most promising American players.
He remains one of the more promising Americans, but one with unfinished business in 2022. Mmoh, the son of Toni Mmoh, who is a former World No.105 that played for Nigeria during his career, believes he is on the rise after several seasons of fits and starts due to injuries.
He recently won the USTA’s French Open wild card playoff and will take his place in the main draw at Roland-Garros for the second time next week. Having topped out in the ATP rankings at 96 in 2018, Mmoh currently ranks 179 – but, at the age of 24, he feels he has the capacity to go much higher.
We asked him if players like Aslan Karatsev, who came from relative obscurity to become the lowest-ranked player to reach the Australian Open semifinals on his Grand Slam debut, inspire him to believe that he can rise up the ranks on tour.
“[Players like that] show me that no matter how long you might be playing challengers or whatever that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are a challenger player,” he said. “It just hasn’t clicked yet in terms of you making that breakthrough, and I feel like if I’m able to consistently be healthy and just give myself opportunities week in and week out, I feel like my game belongs on the ATP Tour, so I think if I’m able to just keep working hard, keep staying healthy, I’ll be surprised if I’m not there.”
Despite struggling with injuries over the last few seasons, Mmoh has made big strides. He won his first Grand Slam main draw match at the Australian Open in 2020 and has since reached the second round at two other majors. The potential to do damage on the biggest stages is there – now it’s just about getting everything in sync, mentally and physically.
“I would always miss four months here, three months there, so now I feel like my body is finally at a place where I am able to play week in and week out and I’m liking how my game is forming because of that,” Mmoh says. “I’m able to get consistent reps of playing matches and I really think this year is going to be a good year for me because of that.”
Mmoh spends a lot of time training in Bradenton, Florida, where he is a regular hitting partner of Sebastian Korda, Denis Shapovalov and other top pros. He says the experience can only help him.
“It’s a very competitive atmosphere, I’m able to hit with Sebi a lot, Shapo when he’s here. Obviously my goal is to be playing with these guys week in and week out, and it’s a good place to train because it feels like you are on the tour with them when you are training with them.”

One of the unique voices in our sport stopped by on Skype to join host Chris Oddo for a discussion on the 2020 ATP season. That would be Robbie Koenig, the man who has captured the imagination of tennis fans ever since he stepped into the booth and started to call the sport that he played professionally for many years. The South African caught up with us from London, where he is preparing to call this year's #NittoATPFinals for Amazon Prime UK.
Conversations:
What to make of the Big 3's performance in 2020 and what can we expect from the trio in 2021, with Federer returning. Robbie thinks fans should get ready for three or four more years of dominance from Novak Djokovic...
Is Daniil Medvedev going to win a Slam one of these days? And what is it that makes Medvedev near invincible when he's going good?
Staying on the Russian cadre, how impressive has the performance of Andrey Rublev been in 2020 and how important will it be for him to put up a good performance in London next week? Does he have a shot to win some matches? Robbie weighs in...
Ugo Humbert gets the nod from Koenig when it comes to most improved player of 2020. What is it about the Frenchman that makes him seem like a lock to make the Top 10 and what sets him apart from the other young Frenchman on the ATP Tour?
What are the unique characteristics of the for the four highest-ranked teenagers -- Jannik Sinner (44), Lorenzo Musetti (126), Carlos Alcaraz (139) and Brandon Nakashima (206) -- and what can we expect from this group of talented youngsters in the years to come?
Will Dominic Thiem's US Open title be the key that unlocks the Austrian's full potential as a Grand Slam juggernaut?
Thanks for listening and hope you enjoyed! Special thanks to Robbie Koenig for his time and insights! Don't forget to rate/review and subscribe to the podcast and, most important, ENJOY THE TENNIS!
