08 Jul 2024Sea Swimming All Year Round01:10:56

Annabel Dunston is a swimming nut, and is part fish. As the title suggests she is in the sea - the English channel to be exact - all year round, unlike Rodney who only swims in the summer. Tanya however, doesn't float and has had Green Peace intercept Japanese whaling vessels on her behalf before now.

In this opening episode the dingbats talk to Annabel Dunstan. Annabel’s a wild swimmer that got tired of swimming in rivers, mostly because she’d swam in them all. Then did a bunch of lakes and thought, “stuff it I’m off to Brighton to swim in the sea all year round.” And we don’t just mean a paddle for ten minutes and then a drip dry on the pebbles in the sun. This lady is part fish. She swims at the very least three times a week, and a minimum distance of 2.5km a session, weather and water conditions permitting.

Annabel talks us through her very personal reasons for getting into swimming in the first place. The myriad of health benefits she believes is gained from it, and the cold-water emersion therapy that happens as a by-product of regularly swimming in the sea every week. We also talk about the do’s and don’ts of swimming, as well as what she thinks about when distance swimming, of which she’s a veteran.

It's a great first guest for series two and yet another enlightening episode, for the return of “the best podcast to come out of Brighton and Hove and Woking.” Someone will say it about the show at some point… if we pay them enough. The dynamic dumbo’s are back, just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.

26 Jul 2024 Soul Casserole01:07:45

Seasoned DJ and turn table aficionado Dumani Ncube, or Dustee Du as he’s know on the decks, has been flipping vinyl and seamlessly blending tracks together for over 25 years. One of the OG’s (old git's) of Brighton soul, funk, R&B and rare grove, he heads up the DJ collective Soul Casserole. They are responsible for some of the best R&B nights out available in the south east of the UK. Having partnered with the likes of Craig Charles and Norman Jay, two of the Godfathers and the purveyors of funk, soul and rare groove music.

Dustee talks about how he got into being a DJ, working alongside some of his idols, how he got his DJ name and even dub’s the podcast pair with their DJ names. He also talks about the obsession of collecting vinyl, the hours spent flicking through record shops, in the hope of finding a rare recording. Also, he highlights the change in technology, and the hours spent mastering and mixing, the stuff no one sees but is integral to being a great DJ. If you like soul funk and R&B music this is a revealing insight into the obsessive nature of the DJ’s who love it even more than you do.

As always with this pair of plums, it’s a fascinating and enlightening conversation with lashings of silliness and laughs a plenty.

03 Aug 2024Scream if you want to go faster01:07:53

There’s no polite way to put it, but Laura is nut’s about rollercoasters. She’s on them in her lunch break and would ride them all weekend if she were able to. A season pass holder to the Palace Pier in her adopted hometown of Brighton, it’s fair to say she may have even moved there just to be close to the fun fair at the end of the pier. Either way she’s on first name terms with the operators of the rides, and often request for them to be made to go faster.

On here bucket list is a world tour of rides and theme parks across the globe. Although the thing that sparked her fascination and interest, were last century steam powered rides mostly powered by traction engines. She has a date with the Blackpool’s Big One in her future and has already concurred Chessington World of Adventure and past her driving test at Lego Land. However arguably the countries most famous theme park Alton Towers is yet to have Laura cross its threshold, although by the time this episode is aired who knows. A serious fan of fun fair rides and an adrenalin junkie, she explains her fascination, what her favourite rides are, what she likes and get from going on the same rides again and again. She also mentions the ride she hates, which is a little surprising.

Tanya and Rodney also have a couple of anecdotes they share about their own thrill-seeking adventures, as well as their own scary ride experiences. As always there are laughs a plenty in this entertaining episode of a subject not too often mentioned in everyday conversation. None the less it’s fascinating and revealing chat about the thrill seeking benefits of scaring the crap out of yourself.

16 Aug 2024A Podcasting Seagull01:05:04

Brighton and Hove Albion football club has spurned at least 8 different podcasts separate to the official podcast run by the club. Joe Sayers is the host of the ‘Albion Obsessed’ a fan lead podcast, for the fans by the fans. We talk about the obsession and fanatical nature of being a football fan, as well as fan dress sense and kit faux pas. We talk about the personal and generational link to the club, his reasons for supporting the club and also just how much he spends on it to pursue and support the club.

As a fellow podcaster with more than 2.5 thousand followers, we also talk about the business, the construction and difficulties of podcasting. We discuss his reasoning behind entering such a niche and crowded podcast space, why he thought he could do something different, better and more uniquely than what was already out there, as well as his successes and ambitions for the podcast. We also learn a thing or two from him about podcasting.

This is an intriguing episode if you have ever wondered what goes on in a football fans head. What drives them, what makes them take it so personally and what makes them so committed to watching an ever-changing and inter changing number of players perform each week. With no other real connection other than a win.

07 Sep 2024Master Comedy Class01:06:06

A local stand-up comedy legend is what you call a comedian that’s been around a while and managed to survive and thrive. This accurately describes our guest Kevin McCarron with more than 30 years under his belt. He’s done it all from one man shows, club comedian and numerous visits to the Edinburgh Fringe. In his chat with the duo he freely and openly talks to our hosts, both of whom have a vested interest in learning as much as they can from his experience. Both of whom are themselves budding stand ups.

There’s the origin story, his arrival in the UK in the 70’s and early 80’s and his re-educating himself and becoming a philosophy professor. Also, his experience, and lived experiences with addiction a, subject he’s become quite an authority on, plus a load of jokes too. Kevin also talks about his association with legendary comedy promotor Laughing Horse comedy, which he had a hand in its creation. There’s no hiding the fascination and respect the hosts have for their guest, as they like you get to peak behind the curtain and see the inner workings of a fellow comedian.

Even if you don’t know who Kevin McCarron or you’ve never heard of him. Trust us if you like clever smart intelligent comedy, you’ll like this interview. Even if you prefer dick, fart and arse jokes there’s plenty in this episode you’ll like to.

23 Aug 2024Hot! Hot! Hot!01:06:08

Stephen Dixon

In this episode our hosts talk to mild mannered financial adviser Stephen Dixon about his passion for growing chillies. He not only grows, cultivates and nurtures chillies, his passion for chillies goes much deeper than that. He’s also a bit of a Victor von Frankenstein, as he’s also had ago or two at cross pollinating different plants in order to create even hotter chillies.

Stephen’s love of all things chilli doesn’t stop there, he also runs a chilli called sauce company called Hot Pods selling his hot sauce blends all over the world. It’s fair to say that chillies have become a bit of an obsession for him over the years. So much so that he also attends chilli festivals up and down the country, as well as running chilli eating competitions. Ironically, he’s a bid of a sadist when it comes to inflicting the hot heat flavours on unsuspecting hot sauces lovers. He will happily real you in, then hit you with a hot sauce that deadens the taste buds on the devils tongue.

If you want to know anything and everything about chillies, this episode is going to leave you with a warm burning sensation in your mouth, that’s for sure. Oh, and you’ll also learn how best to put out the fire should you be foolish enough to indulge.

21 Sep 2024Foraging for a Free Lunch.01:15:04

Henrietta Fernandez

For the first time in this series the show hits the road and goes wild foraging with food forager Henrietta Fernandez and her hired hound for the day Woody. Our hosts go routing through the undergrowth, leaf picking and twig tasting to find some tasty morsels that are growing through the concrete or flowering in the forest. Now, it can’t be emphasised enough that you really need an expert and someone who knows what they’re doing, and what they’re looking at when foraging.

Henrietta takes our intrepid pair through some of the does and don’t of foraging. Finds some dangerous and poison plants, as well as some more tasty, wholesome and healing plants to. Tanya obviously eats everything in sight when prompted to. Whereas Rodney struggles to keep up, take photos, juggle the recording equipment, make friends with Woody and ask intelligent questions. Which as you’ll hear from the episode, isn’t always his strong point. But together they create a great episode of the podcast, where it’s almost impossible to not learn something new.

This episode of the show was recorded on location at Hove Lagoon, west along the seashore from Hove Lawns and Stanmer Park, just north of the city of Brighton. There will be loads of photos on Instagram of our time with Henrietta and Woody, and you’ll be able to view them via the Instagram link below.

07 Jul 2023Gary Gary Gary (Bees)01:11:04

In the very first episode of The Looking For A Third Podcast, the Mensa rejects talk to Gary Grant a long suffering friend of Tanya's about his passion for bee keeping. Gary talks about the how, when, where and why he got into bee keeping, but goes on to talk about the fascinating behaviours, the societal structure and the greater wider world of bee keeping. However, he is unable to do this without several puns, and despite Rodney's best efforts to avoid them, once Tanya gets going he's fighting a loosing battle. "Bee" prepared (see I just did it) to groan a bit once the two get going in the open episode of of series 1.

14 Jul 2023Fasting Miles01:10:11

The dynamic dunces are back to talk to the enlightening Miles Borman, a self-styled mens health fitness and wellbeing guru. An advocate of fasting he regularly goes without food for 24 and 48 hours. He talks us through the how, when, why and where of fasting. Plus his personal philosophy, approach and shed's light on the numerous benefits of going without food for set periods. Miles also talks about what it was like to fast for 7 days on a remote hill side in Portugal, his longest fast to date.

Always entertaining the conversation is engaging and illuminating with an individual who has unique insight into a subject they're passionate about. The idiots are their usual convivial selves, asking all the right questions between bouts of silliness, and never straying too far off topic.

10 Jul 2023Claire Carty Comedian01:17:52

The crash test dummies that claim to be hosts of the show, are joined in this episode by UK and Eastbourne based comedian Claire Carty. Now don't worry about it if you've never heard of her. All you really need to know is that she's very funny, funnier than the male crash test dummy that hosts the show, and she'll be on your screens some day soon. She's that good!

Claire talks about her early years and origin story, and why she finally decided to give stand-up comedy ago. Based in the south east of the UK, Claire also talks about her inspirations for material, gigging on the south coast, he goals and her personal process to handling the nerves, as well as tips and tricks for getting better.

If you like comedy and stand-up comedy in particular, then this is a must listen to episode. It's full of revealing insight into what performers do, how they do it to get it better, before it gets to you.

11 Aug 2023Running Man Jim01:14:34

Jim Higham is a runner who came to running relatively late after spending time working abroad in Africa. By his own admission he's become a little addicted to it. He gets restless if he can’t get a tiny run in of at least 10k a day. Now, to normal people in a city, it's about a 20 minute car ride or a 30 minute bus journey, and around 6.2 miles too long a walk. He normally clocks up over 40 miles a week, gets through three pairs of running shoes a year, and an awful lot of vaseline… Stop! It’s for his nipples... Stop! That sounds way worse.  He wrestles with his addiction all whilst maintaining a full-time job and family life. But here’s the irony. Impressive as his stats are, he’s not even the best runner in the family. His wife regularly competes and wins regional distance races, and I’m sure - to Jim’s annoyance - wins just a little too regularly. In this revealing episode we discover his passion for rhinos, distance running and his most epic experience yet: running across Kenya. Oh, and we didn’t even mention, he’s not a bad photographer either.

10 Aug 2023Edi The Artivist01:10:10

Edi Mandala is an amazing self-taught, ever evolving artist, with a remarkable back catalogue of mosaic art works and commissions. His home is adorned with some painstakingly intricate mosaic artwork that really deserve their own retrospective show at some point in the future. However, like all true artists, one medium isn’t enough, and he’s now moved on to create a mash up of spoken word poetry, artwork and social commentary, alongside his current multimedia project 99 Bigots, of which more in a moment. Edi is also working on a children’s book based on an old piece of driftwood he found washed up on a beach. He juggles all this whilst holding down a job with Brighton Buses as a driver. Oh, and he’s also given away all of his trousers and has become an avid kilt wearer.

99 Bigots is online activism, and is a mixed media project encompassing audio, artwork, poetry and literature. The goal is to take on the language of hate speech, bigotry, racism and discrimination; satirising the words most commonly used and the view points most often taken when people choose to discriminate. Edi Jay Mandala calls himself an ARTIVIST, an artist activist challenging both sides of the divide to come together somewhere in the middle.

24 Aug 2023OCR Legend Laura Heywood01:09:55

This week’s guest Laura Heywood is unusual for the podcast, because she has been a British, European and World champion. It’s rare we talk to people who can call themselves world class, and delightfully Laura insists we don’t. She’s been a winning competitor in the field of Obstacle Course Racing for several years now, and really is a bit of a legend in the sport. Like most of the people on our show, OCR is just a thing she’s into, because she has a full time job as a London fire fighter. We talk all things OCR, her experiences within the London Fire Brigade, and how balancing all that plus family life is harder than scrambling over a cargo net, wading through chest deep muddy water and traversing wet, cold and slippery monkey bars. And if that’s not tough enough for you, she also talks about being a competitor on Ninja Warrior UK. Go Laura!

15 Sep 2023Supporting Artist Chris Hemmings01:12:00

In this episode, our guest has appeared in more than 30 films and television series’, alongside such Hollywood luminaries as Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren. He’s been in numerous commercials ranging from sci-fi, action and adventure to costume dramas and has even made it into the Harry Potter movies! And yet, many of the A listers wouldn't know his name or even remember him. Chris Hemmings is what they call in the business, a Supporting Artist, or to give it its more commonly used title, a film extra. Chris gives us the low down on the SA world within the UK and tell us what it’s like to be on set with big name actors and movie stars. He’s a great storyteller, and will keep you hooked with amusing anecdotes of miss steps and mayhem caused by other 'over enthusiastic' supporting artists. He also talks about his experience starring in a Belgium TV commercial. Oh, and did we mention he’s got a fantastic voice over voice and a moustache that makes him look like Lord Kitchener? No?… Well we just did.

13 Sep 2023Eyewitness Debbie Flack01:10:39

In this episode we meet Debbie Flack, who volunteered to act as an eyewitness to the daily struggles and unjust treatment the Israelis are subjecting the Palestinians to on a daily basis. Now, we know what you’re thinking, not a funny topic, and what are the two village idiots doing, wading into geopolitics? Rest assured, there are plenty of laughs in this episode; thanks mostly to the quality of our guest, and several flocks of sheep. You’ll come away more informed about the Israel Palestine conflict, which was honestly not our intention, but is no bad thing.

We talk about Debbie’s personal journey, her motivation, and the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) the organisation behind the trip. (Not easy for Tweedle Dum to say….)

There are some brilliant blogs by EAPPI volunteers, the links below. They give voice to ordinary Palestinian’s about how life is severely restricted for them under the Israeli occupation. We’d urge you to read just one or two to give you a better idea of what the organisation does, what they stand for and why they’re trying to help. As usual, with The looking For A Third Podcast, this is a fascinating, engaging and funnier episode than you might think. The halfwits do a great job of walking the line between downright silly and somewhat serious.

In this podcast, the crash test dummies meet Lou Channon; the driving force behind a Brighton based community gospel choir open to all.

Over two decades, the acclaimed 'Brighton Goes Gospel’ choir has grown from just a handful of like minded people - with a love of gospel - to over a 140 strong membership.

Lou talks about the choirs' first small get-togethers, to their numerous live performances, concerts and shows. She also talks about the logistical and personal management of such an organic endeavour as it grows. Plus, the skills she personally had to develop in order to manage the choir as became more popular. We also talk about the sheer pleasure, delight and overwhelming sensation of wellness that comes from singing within a choir.

13 Oct 2023Gary Grant "They'll Bee Back"01:05:27

A great giggle from the get go, the final episode of series one joins the non-geniuses back to where it all started, as they revisit Gary Grant and his bees. Things are very different in the height of the honey making season. The bees are active, and their numbers have grown. Dressed in fabulous, all in one white numbers for protection, the pair finally get close to these hard working little honey makers.

Gary - as always - is on great form and shows Rodney and Tanya around his ever-growing bee estate portfolio. He now has a couple of new hives, and a bee hotel he created from an old wooden table leg. They get up close and personal, as Gary literally reveals a hive of activity. He also talks the intrepid idiots through his honey collection and bees wax making process. We say intrepid, because one of the hosts is a big wuss when it comes to flying black and yellow insects. Apparently, just the mention of ‘Sting’ can make him break out in a sweat.

They say “you should never go back,” particularly if you dinned and dashed. But that doesn’t apply here, as we learn even more about these fascinating creatures in the company of this hilarious host and his growing bee empire. They said they’d come back and they did, plus they got to play dress up. The second visit was as good as the first, that’s for sure. The question is, will there ‘bee’ a trilogy? Did you get that? Did you see what I did there?

There are several pictures of the visit on the podcasts instagram page, if you'd like to see just how close they got.
