08 Dec 2023 | Beer Review: Sam Adams Utopias | 00:01:43
A 56 proof beer finished in a variety of casks, including Pineau des Charentes, bourbon, ruby port, and even peated scotch. Meticulously blended in a "spare no expense" process that allows the "beer" to drink and age like a combination of fine spirit or fortified wine. High octane yeasts and LOTS of cask babying and blending contribute to the final unique flavor profile. Big initial fruit and malt on the nose. On the palate, it’s got alcoholic bite of a young ruby port with the rich malty blast of a barley wine. To be sipped and savored after dinner with stilton and walnuts.
14 May 2024 | Whiskey Review: Whistlepig 25yr Single Malt "Badonkadonk" | 00:00:53
Tasting Notes: This 25yr old "North American" single malt whiskey from Whistlepig is likely of Canadian origin, but no matter, it's a juggernaut of oak, fruit, and soft dessert like flavors. It's finished in Silver Oak Cabernet Barrels and perfectly blends the fruit of the malt and the dark fruit of the cab all wrapped up in an ultra-aged, ultra cool, and ultra expensive package. We've got ONE bottle for $1999.99 and if you want it, contact me directly.
04 Oct 2023 | Whiskey Review: Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2023 | 00:01:46
Tasting notes: The 103 barrels that make up this year's 2023 Old Forester Birthday Bourbon release were all barreled on May 5th, 2011 and stored on the 5th floor of Warehouse I, released this year as a 12-year-old at 96 proof. Beautifully perfumed nose, oak, dark, ripe fruit, fig, cherry, and plum with dark brown sugar, molasses, and leather. On the palate, as elegant and as rich as they come. Soft fruit gives way to light oak, then more bright fruit and cinnamon and brown sugar on the finish. May not be for the proof chasers out there, but gosh darn it if you just want the BEST TASTING bourbon that you can really enjoy sip after sip, you'll LOVE this release, as I do!

11 Apr 2023 | Whiskey Review: Bulleit Single Barrel Preview | 00:04:23
This spring we picked two delicious Bulliet single barrels. Bourbon World High Rye which is the "B" mashbill of 36% rye and the "1" yeast feautring a rich tropical fruit and leather profile. Given a 10-12yr age range for this one with only a 7 case yield. We also selected a Bourbon World "Fruit Bomb" with utilizes the "E" or 21% rye mashbill and the Number "2" yeast which gives the spirit a fruity aroma and creamy texture. This is the the 8-10 yr range. Since these are both much OLDER barrels than what the current Bulleit facility has been operating you can bet these are older MGP barrels. They are bottled at 104 proof, perfect for the mash and yeasts used. These are definitely higher quality single barrels than the current profile of the program itself, so take advantage a grab a few. They'll be incredible daily drinkers.
09 Jul 2024 | 2XO American Oak | 00:01:20
Let's take a look at Dixon Dedman's most affordable of the 2XO (two times oak) brand, "American Oak," a whiskey which is finished a second time in HIGHLY charred barrels. Double oak or double barrel finishes have been very popular in recent years, but often the results are mixed. So much flavor is derived from the barrel, that adding a NEW freshly charred barrel to the mix can greatly affect the flavor profile, and in some instances add too much. There's also the issue with heavily flavored second barrels which essentially render the base liquid null and void because it transfers the whiskey into a sickly sweet version of itself. So, what's up with Dedman's American Oak? For starters the nose is candy corn sweet with a touch of menthol and cassis, nothing over-oaked at all, but pleasantly sweet to smell. On the palate the 92 proof spirit presents as sweet initially followed by rye spice, then oak spice. The finish is medium long, but the chewy sweet oak mid-palate is where this whiskey really shines. More than middle of the road, this really is fantastic juice that shouldn't be overlooked.
12 Jan 2024 | NA Beer Review: Athletic Brewing Free Wave Hazy IPA 6pks | 00:01:42
Tasting Notes: 70 Calories, 16 grams of Carbs and less than .5% alcohol, Athletic Brewing's Free Wave is one of the BEST non-alc IPAs out there, with copious amounts of Amarillo, Mosaic and Chinook Hops which create that signature floral and fresh juicy flavors you come to expect in a good hazy. 02 Nov 2023 | Vodka Review: Crystal Head Vodka | 00:01:35
Tasting Notes: Canadian corn vodka that's additive free sold in the skull head bottle and shilled by one of the Ghostbusters??? Yep, that's Crystal Head in a nutshell. "It is distilled four times into a neutral grain spirit and blended with pristine water from Newfoundland, Canada. The vodka is filtered seven times, of which three are through layers of semi-precious crystals known as Herkimer diamonds." Available at Select Stores.
26 Feb 2024 | Whiskey Review: Indiana Total Solar Eclipse Special Edition Bourbon | 00:01:17
Tasting Notes: On April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse will occur, blotting out the sun across a wide swath of Indiana. Hoosiers and friends from all over will gather together on this historic occasion to mark this celestial event, not expected to happen again until 2153. This special bourbon was distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and bottled in Bloomington, directly in the path of the eclipse. We hope you use it to toast this once in a lifetime experience. Bottled at 119.4 proof with no filtration, this is a FULL flavored whiskey with dark red fruit, cinnamon, and plenty of background char. On the palate, big dark fruit combines with apple pie crust sweetness, finishing with field honey, cinnamon butter, and a sweet dose of arm chair leather and oak.

12 Dec 2023 | Whiskey Review: Angel's Envy Cask Strength 2023 Edition | 00:01:45
Tasting Notes: This year's 2023 release of Angel's Envy Cask Strength weighs in at 118.2 proof. These are hand selected barrels that spend extra time in port cask, aged between 5 and 9 years. The result is a maximally delicious fruit! Big red fruit, especially apple and pear on the nose. Touch of herbs with mint and eucalyptus leading along with feint honey. On the palate, a tremendous mid-palate fruit and honey platter with the darker fruits playing supporting roles. Tastes like a barrel aged top floor Old Forester single barrel with the fruit turned up to 11!
14 Jun 2024 | Ardbeg Spectacular | 00:01:06
Peatheads pay attention, this is your shot at this year's Ardbeg Spectacular. Aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-port casks, the combo of sweet and smoky, richly fruited, along with salty, smoky, nutty, and downright tar-level peat is as spectacular as the name suggests. Complex but not lost or disassociative as many multi-cask aged whiskies can be, the 46%, non-chill filtered peat bomb hits all the right notes. Ardbeg has always been on the peatier side of Islay, but the port-cask ageing really shows a different side of what their smoke profile is capable of imparting. VERY LIMITED. Email me directly at mcolglazier@bigredliquors.com if you want one. $149.99
06 Sep 2023 | Tequila Review: Butterfly Cannon Color Changing Tequila | 00:01:44
Tasting Notes: A stunning natural violet-blue liquid with a fresh citrus nose. Notes of clementine and prickly pear create a one-of-a-kind combination of the tastiest tropical and subtropical fruits. A finish of strawberry, watermelon, honeydew melon, fig, and banana marries perfectly with a crisp agave undertone. Long, rich, and refreshing flavor.
16 Jun 2023 | Whiskey Review: Johnnie Walker Red Label | 00:01:43
Tasting Notes: Johnnie Walker Red Label is the number 1 selling scotch in the world. It's a blended scotch whiskey with a fair amount of younger, lighter grain whiskey, and an array of younger single malts. On the nose, light honey, a signature "grain" aroma that's a little bready, a little gingery, and a little oaky. There's almost a culinary appeal to grain heavy blends. On the palate an easy going mix of malted notes along with lasting citrus, and a breadiness that turns into the slightest of smokes. More complex than you would think, and even though they say mix it, it taste great neat to me! #1 Scotch in the World for a Reason

12 May 2023 | Tequila Review: Teremana Anejo Tequila | 00:01:46
Tasting Notes: From NOM 1613 this is a smokestack of vanilla on the nose, freshly scraped off the bean, followed by cooked agave and a touch of oak. On the palate, creme brulee and caramel followed by warming spice and a subtle fruit finish. Vanilla Ice Cream Tequila

11 Jul 2023 | Whiskey Review: Russell's Reserve 13 2023 Release | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes: The latest Russell's Reserve 13yr is actually a blend of 13, 15, and 21-year-old Wild Turkey bottled at 114.8 proof. Even though it took a STEEP price increase, it's still one of the most sought-after bourbon releases of the year, so let's dig in. On the nose, a very complex and rich blend of vanilla bean, Jamaican pot-still rum, raisins, and leather. On the palate, a leather whips to the tongue, then rich candied oranges, toffee, and creamy caramel emerge. Spice is BIG, but in the background, leather is massive, but not overpowering. Sweetness is throughout, but never cloying or too rich. This is a massive whiskey that drinks light, and a light whiskey that drinks massive. It's balanced, focused, and altogether damn delicious.

07 Dec 2023 | Scotch Review: Balvenie DoubleWood 12yr Scotch | 00:01:44
Tasting Notes: William Grant hit a HOME RUN when they brought out the Balvenie DoubleWood, taking a practice that had been fairly common in scotch aging, the addition of sherry aged cask whiskies to ex-bourbon barrel casks and giving it a name and providing some insight into the process. The label was creative, and more importantly, the juice was excellent. Along with the barrels, they stuck a 12yr age statement on it and have never backed down. Pure arm-chair leather malt with dark fruit, cherry, honey malt, and just a pinch of cinnamon. The Balvenie has always been a juicy malt, but the addition of the sherry adds a fruit element that provides even more complexity. Arm-Chair Leather Honey Malt Deliciousness
10 Jun 2024 | George T Stagg 2023 Raffle - My Favorite Whiskey Glass Story | 00:01:21
Post a story and picture of your favorite whiskey glass on our Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter pages (@BigRedLiquors ) for a chance to buy a bottle of 2023 George T Stagg! Or email me directly with a picture and story at support@bigredliquors.com. All posts and emails will be gathered and the winner will be announced on Friday, June 14th. My favorite whiskey glass is an engraved rocks glass with a heavy bottom I received 13 years ago for officiating a wedding for college friends on Mackinac Island, my first of four! I've tried hundreds of different glasses since then, but I always seem to come back to this one. I received four originally, and have only broken ONE, which is a pretty good record considering little kids in the house. I like it because it feels substantial and I know the perfect amount of pour because it's where the liquid meets the bottom of the "C" initial engraved in the glass. The couple I married are still together, and I'm still happily using the glasses they gifted me all these years later. What better way to toast the things that last!

20 Jan 2021 | Episode 99: Virtual Tasting with Kendall-Jackson Wine | 01:03:43
In this episode, Jill talks to Randy Ullom, Senior VP and Winemaster for Kendall-Jackson Wine. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Randy Ullom grew up watching his father make wine at home as a hobby, but it wasn’t until he spent three years on sabbatical from college in Chile, where he embarked on a cross-country trek through wine country, that he realized he wanted to pursue a career in viticulture and enology. After exploring Chile’s vast winegrowing regions, he returned to the United States and earned his degree in the field from The Ohio State University in 1975, graduating summa cum laude. In March of 1997, Randy was named Winemaster for Kendall-Jackson Winery as a nod to his intimate involvement in the intricacies of the viticultural and winemaking programs of the brand. In 2006, he also became the Chief Operating Officer, responsible for overseeing the ongoing business operations within the company. Following that stint for a few years, Randy has settled into the continued role of SVP / Winemaster for Kendall-Jackson with oversight of Chile. When Jess made the first vintage of Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay, his goal was simple: He believed that regardless of where you live – whether it be Sonoma County or South Carolina – everyone deserves a great “affordable luxury.” To him this was the great American wine. In 2017, Randy reached a milestone – 25 years working for the Jackson Family – in the same year Kendall-Jackson celebrated 25 years producing America’s number-one selling Chardonnay. Tasting Notes: Made with real fruit juice, 95 calories, and 4.5% alcohol from the folks who brought you Dail's pouches comes SUNNY D vodka seltzer. We've sold more of these in the past two months than any other new RTD we carry. Why? Because it really does taste like delicious Sunny D!
15 Sep 2023 | Whiskey Review: Wild Turkey 101 Rye | 00:01:48
Tasting Notes: Sweet mother of mercy if you don't run out and buy a case of this, you're crazy because it's currently the best tasting. perfectly proofed rye whiskey in the market for less than $30! The fresh pine and rock candy rye notes are just sensational with sweet fruits and strawberry syrup emerging along with the spice. On the palate, a fresh shot of rye spice that's youthful and zesty to go with a background of charred oak. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Sazerac rye and I have LOVED Bulleit and the 95% MGP rye over the years as well, but this new 101 rye has the spice to compete now and for the price and availability you need to buy it before Campari realizes they are $15 too cheap!
10 Oct 2023 | Whiskey Review: Old Fitzgerald 10yr BIB Spring 2023 Release | 00:01:48
Tasting Notes: The Old Fitzgerald BIB decanter is one of my favorite releases of the year. The 17yr is still one of my all-time favorites, and even when they haven't been sublime, they've always been really good. Enter this year's 10-year-old expression at 100 proof. Rich peanut and red fruit on the nose with maple and toffee. On the palate, intense spice with cardamom, leather, and a rich orchard fruit core surrounded by oak intensity.
17 Apr 2023 | Whiskey Review: Caribou Crossing "BRL" Single Barrel 2023 | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes: As mysterious as a snow-bound yeti and as dazzling as the northern lights, comes Sazerac's single-barrel Canadian Whiskey...Caribou Crossing, is a playful twist on "Buffalo Trace" with the silly sculpted animal on top to match. What's the real story though? This is an 80-proof Canadian whisky single barrel with no age statement (other than for legal purposes 3 yr. requirement) with no known origin distillery. It's truly one of the LEAST transparent and most popular products on the market. Why? Because Sazerac fanatics love the Buffalo Trace connection, but when they actually TASTE a Canadian whiskey for the first time, they kind of love it. And what's not to love? Canadian whisky is good. Really good. It's usually lighter than bourbon, smoother than bourbon, and generally lower proof, which makes the complexity more subtle, and oftentimes more pleasurable. This particular single barrel 167 presents fresh-cut oak, vanilla bean ice cream, and butterscotch on the nose. On the palate a creamy vanilla and citrus pairing, crème brulee, then a touch of spice. It's a refined sipper, with a unique profile, and an exceptionally smooth finish.
18 Oct 2019 | Episode 7: A Conversation With A Wine Importer | 00:39:45

01 Aug 2023 | Tequila Review: La Gritona Reposado | 00:01:45
Tasting Notes: Melly Barajas takes special pride in her female-owned and operated NOM, especially her La Gritona brand which is now available in Indiana. The 10yr old agaves are harvested from the mineral-rich Highlands and placed in clay ovens 24 hours after harvest. The pinas are cooked in the most traditional manner, then rested for 24 hours like a good steak to let the sugars absorb the most flavor from the plant before they begin the crush. Air fermentation, then double distillation in stainless only, then light aging for 8 months in second-use American oak barrels. The result is an earth, grass, pepper, and light vanilla nose with really soft florals and a developing agave wave. Grassiness is like a sweet Rhum Agricole from start to finish. If you're looking for something "different" that's truly terroir and "flavor in production" driven, this is it!

In this episode, Matt tastes Hoosier Gold from Cardinal Spirits.
05 Oct 2023 | Scotch Review: Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5yr | 00:01:43
Tasting Notes: This 94.8 proof, 5-year-old expression of Ardbeg for $54.99 challenges the assumption that all scotch has to be aged at least 10 years to present a fully finished whiskey. While 5 years in Kentucky may be average, and 5 in Jalisco may be ancient, for the cold, rocky shores of Scotland, a 5-year-old is still relatively young. That being said, I think Wee Beastie does better than most, using the strong peat to make up for any shortcomings in the development of the malt via oak. On the nose, sweet pepper, BBQ smoke, fresh seaweed, and a slight cocoa note. On the palate, really delicious young tropical fruit meets more mellow smoke with lifted citrus emerging mid-palate. Instead of the darker fruit and raisin notes found in the underlying older expressions, this is all young tropical fruit, and just as tasty. Tell me this is a 12+ year-old malt, and I wouldn't bat an eye. This is akin to a smoke-heavy blended whisky with a nice fruity balance to go with the rich smoke. Delicious Young Ardbeg that Drinks Much Older
31 Jul 2020 | Episode 74: Hotaling & Co. Importer & Distiller of Fine Spirits | 00:47:04
In this episode, Matt talks to Hotaling & Co. CEO, Dan Leese. Hotaling & Co., formerly Anchor Distilling Company, is an importer and distiller of fine spirits headquartered in San Francisco. Originally established in 1993 by beverage visionary Fritz Maytag, fueled by the bold realization that there were no pot-distilled whiskies or high-end craft gins being made legally in America at the time. As a result, Anchor Distilling Company is credited with creating America’s first craft whiskey (Old Potrero) and gin (Junípero Gin) after Prohibition. In 2010, Fritz Maytag retired and sold Anchor Distilling Company to a business partnership that included Tony Foglio and London's oldest wine and spirit merchant, Berry Bros. & Rudd. With the sale, Anchor Distilling Company expanded beyond production on Potrero Hill to incorporate importing a collection of super-premium craft spirits from around the world. Today, newly named Hotaling & Co., has earned a nationwide reputation for its curated portfolio of premium craft spirits imported into the U.S. that is made up of over 300 specialty products from nearly 23 countries. 16 Oct 2024 | Jack Daniel's Coy Hill 2024 | 00:01:11
In case you didn't know, Coy Hill is the highest point on the Jack Daniel's property, atop which sits Warehouse 8, from which issues the eponymous release of this much loved single barrel series. Drawn from middle cut warehouse floors and bottled at cask strength, this particular batch weighs in at 127.2 proof and is everything you've come to expect for Jack's specialty releases in the last several years. It's beyond rich with caramel, nougat, almond, leather, orange, lime, chocolate, and oak. The palate is a complete masterclass in leather wrapped oak with spice, fruit, and rich butterscotch. Jack makes worldclass whiskey, period! And Coy Hill may be their best ever.
30 Jan 2024 | Whiskey Review: George Dickel Reserve 17 | 00:01:25
Tasting Notes: I've always considered the 84% corn Dickel one of the most rustic and flavorful whiskies on the market. And while Dickel sold and bottled under several non distiller producer labels may not be everyone's cup of tea, the original house bottled Dickel is one of the most consistently rich and easy drinking Tennessee whiskies out there. Enter the reserve "cask strength" at only 92 proof 17year old from Dickel's Master Distiller Nicole Austin. The nose has the same oak profile as a Stagg with massive spicy oak aromas mixed with peanut butter powder and lemon essence. On the palate, the high corn sweetness mixes with the oak to create a spice bomb of rich wood driven flavors. Walnut, toffee, apricots, dark fruit, and finally leather are all whipped up into a frenzy. One of the most powerful 92 proof whiskies I have ever tasted!

07 Aug 2023 | Whiskey Review: Whistlepig Single Barrel 10yr Rye | 00:01:48
Tasting Notes This single barrel of Canadian Whistlepig rye bottle at 106 proof exudes freshly cut oak, pepper, oak spice, licorice, cinnamon-sprinkled bananas, and massive florals. On the palate, chewy malt notes reminiscent of Stranahan's with honey, lemon, and sugar pie throughout. A quick hit of spice on the finish to leave you wanting more.

12 May 2020 | Episode 43: Wine's Biggest Secret in Lodi, CA With Klinker Brick Winery | 00:49:23
In this episode, Jill talks to Farrah Felten-Joley, sixth-generation grape grower and VP of Marketing & Sales and Elizabeth Barnard, National Sales Director for Klinker Brick Winery in Lodi, CA. The Felten Family own and manage fifteen individual vineyard blocks of “Old Vine” Zinfandel that range in age from 40 to 120 years old. Each vineyard is planted in sandy loam soils in the Mokelumne River Appellation of Lodi and the Clements Foothills. In the nineties, the family began to market their zinfandel in the bulk wine market, selling to a number of prestigious, benchmark producers of Zinfandel in Napa and Sonoma Counties. In 2000, Steve and Lori produced their first vintage of Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel. They continue to produce wine from all of the vineyard blocks, culling only the very best lots for bottling Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel and designated vineyard wines. 04 Jan 2024 | Tequila Review: Patron Anejo Bourbon World Barrel Select | 00:01:36
Tasting Notes: This year's Patron Anejo single barrel select was aged in Limousin oak for a minimum of a year, imparting a creamy, tight grained vanilla and and spice to the fresh pepper and lime soaked base spirit. The butterscotch alongside the lime produce a subtle herb and fruit note that's both tropical and earthy. Heck of a deal at $49.99!
24 Jul 2024 | Four Roses 2024 Single Barrel OBSV Cap n' Cork | 00:01:08
Our first Cap n' Cork single barrel features an OBSV aged 10 years and 10 months and bottled at 116.8 proof. The already fruity high rye bourbon, combined with the fruity "V" yeast makes this one of the most elegant and ethereal Four Roses combos. The addition of almost 11 years of aging further increases the complexity, adding a Canadianesque layer of fine vanilla and fresh-cut oak to this fruit bomb. Be at Covington this Saturday for a chance to buy this bottle or it's brother bottle, an OBSQ from Cap.
05 Sep 2023 | Whiskey Review: Elijah Craig Ryder Cup Edition 2023 | 00:01:46
Tasting Notes: This special edition of Elijah Craig is finished in toasted European oak casks to bridge the divide between the US and Europe, hated rivals in the rowdiest international golf tournament in the world. The bottling starts with regular Elijah Craig 94 proof, and then is finished in toasted oak barrels made to mimic the barrels used in the Lazio wine region which contains Rome, the host of the 2023 tournament. The nose is highly perfumed with almond paste replacing the normal herbal notes of EC, soft orange and apple fruits as well. On the palate, more rich nutty notes with chocolate covered almonds along with roasted coffee notes, raisins, and honey.
11 Mar 2024 | Whiskey Review: Hard Truth High Road Sweet Mash Rye | 00:01:16
Massive tropical fruit notes for a rye whiskey. Spice is fairly subdued. I've been critical of some ham-fisted Hard Truth releases in the past, but what we have here emerging is an actual new "house style" of whiskey. You have to manage your expectations though, because it is NOT an MGP 95% rye, and it's not even in the same universe as most standard distillery 51% ryes. This is wholly on it's own. First off, it's 100% fruit driven, almost cordial-like in both nose and palate. Apple skins, pears, and peaches along apricot and even lime! On the palate, the 93 proof spirit, skims the tongue, leaving anise, clove, ginger, and a distinct oak note. Tried it neat, on the rocks, and in an Old Fashioned and I have to say the Old Fashioned stood out because of how soft and fruity the whiskey is to begin with, so give it a shot. It's local, it's made with integrity, and it tastes pretty darn good!
21 Feb 2024 | Scotch Review: Compass Box Orchard House | 00:01:44
Tasting Notes: A "blended malt," bottled at 92 proof with big doses of Linkwood and the always delicious Clynelish, Compass Box Orchard House is the perfect scotch for spring. Inviting citrus, fruit, and floral aromas are integrated with a backbone of sweet malt. On the palate, vanilla bean, peach ice cream, lemon curd, and finger limes along with more exotic tangerine and lychee. Plus it's all MALT for UNDER $50

Tasting Notes: | |||
31 Jan 2024 | Cognac Review: Courvoisier Cognac | 00:01:46
Tasting Notes: Since Beam Suntory just sold Courvoisier to Campari recently we thought it a good time to take a look at their flagship VS expression. Among the large houses (Remy, Martell, Hennessy) Courvoisier is the smallest, and most affordable. Not quite catching fire like most Cognac did during the pandemic, the brand was left to its own devices, but just judging on TASTE alone, Courvoisier is soft, fruity, and possibly the most approachable of the big house styles. Soft orange and citrus on the nose with a light leather aroma and a touch of almond paste. On the palate the sweetness settles into a soft glowing candied orange with oak spice growing, but never overtaking.

09 Oct 2024 | Booker's The Reserves 2024 | 00:01:07
If you ever wondered if Booker's was capable of releasing a "next level" bourbon, you can wonder no more...this is it. It's a blend of 8 different bourbons from 8 different warehouses ranging from 8yrs old to 14 years old, taken from the middle cut of the warehouse and bottled at cask strength, with no filtration. Brown sugar and dark cherry on the nose with the deepest, sweetest caramel and vanilla notes I've ever tasted in a Beam release...candy, candy, candy, with just a touch of spice on the finish. I thought the Birthday Bourbon and Russell's Reserve 15 couldn't be beat this year. I think this just beat it!

23 Jul 2024 | Four Roses 2024 Single Barrel OBSK Big Red Liquors | 00:01:00
We kick off a whole week of Four Roses single barrel reviews with Big Red Liquors OBSK, a 9 year, 3 month old bottle at 120.2 proof. The 35% rye recipe bourbon combined with the spice-driven "K" yeast strain has never failed to disappoint. This particular barrel also has a rich caramel/butterscotch note on the nose along with the typical Four Roses baking spice aroma. On the palate it's pure cinnamon cream, like licking the layers between a Pillsbury Cinnamon roll. SO GOOD. Our Big Store in Bloomington and our Cask Strength store in Greenwood will have this on hand for a special release event at 9:00 a.m. on July 27th. Line up early!
25 May 2023 | Whiskey Review: Teeling Single Cask Irish Whiskey | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes: Lifted fruitcake and malty aromas on the nose with biscuit, grass, and a thick lemon curd aroma as well. Bottled at 118 proof with no chill-filtration this is ADVANCED whiskey, with so many complex layers of fruit and barrel spice mixing it up. Once you let the whiskey melt over your tongue you get creamy butter notes along with some traditional Irish grassiness. This is a rich, complex malt, belonging in the Scottish big leagues.
22 Feb 2023 | Scotch Review: Macallan 12yr Sherry Cask | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes The Macallan 12yr sherry oak is arguably the single most valuable scotch SKU in the world. Short, squatty stills produce a rich, biscuity, malty, rich spirit which gets aged for twelve years exclusively in sherry seasoned casks from Spain. The result is a big, brawling, oily, malty single malt fused inextricably with the dried red fruit aromas and flavors of a sherry cask. It's rich on both ends, and that's why people love it. The nose is pure sherry with a hint of ginger spice. The palate is dried fruit, orchard fruit, with a layer of rich malty goodness beneath. bottled at 86 proof. There's a reason why some things are popular. ![]() ![]()
22 Jul 2024 | Remus Babe Ruth Reserve | 00:01:13
The new Remus "Babe Ruth" reserve is a blend of three of MGPs high rye bourbon recipes in honor of Babe Ruth. Only 10,624 bottles were produced, each representing one of Ruth's plate appearances. Bottled at 111 proof, the blend comprises 12% of 2016 of the 44% rye bourbon, 70% of 49% rye bourbon, and 18% of the 36% rye bourbon, so for a Bourbon it's about as rye heavy as you can get, which is great for an MGP which makes some of the best rye on the planet, period. Typical cinnamon candy on the nose with an appealing citrus note. On the palate it's rock candy sweet with touches of big baking spice between fresh cut oak. This is a BIG whiskey.

30 Aug 2023 | Whiskey Review: Crown Royal Black | 00:01:46
Crown Royal Black is the definition of an UNDER THE RADAR whisky, as it is widely overshadowed by regular Crown and the fact that it's a Canadian whisky, to begin with. But, despite both of these facts, Crown Black persists for a small, but discerning group of whisky lovers. The "black" moniker is used in a variety of spirits, but the most popular of these if Johnnie Walker, another Diageo brand. While Johnnie Black denotes the smokier whiskies used in the blend, the "black" in Crown Royal refers to the higher portion of bourbon-like whisky used along with the slightly higher 90 proof point. On the nose, typical Crown vanilla, maple, and artificial grape. On the palate a LOT more oak than the typical Crown with black currant, cinnamon oak, and cherry pie added to the typical grape juice-like profile. It takes the light, fruity, chewiness of Crown and pairs with the backbone of subtle oak and rich bourbon spice. It's still not a challenging whisky to drink, but every once in a while you just want some pleasure for free!
22 Mar 2024 | Hard Tea Review: Hoop Tea | 00:01:05
A Hard Tea Perfect for March Madness. Anheuser Busch's entry into the spiked tea market, Hoop Tea, debuted in 2023, taking on the mighty Twisted Tea. As far as boozy tea's go, it definitely delivers on smoothness, sweetness, drinkability, and balance.
15 Feb 2024 | Whiskey Review: Huber Blackberry Whiskey | 00:01:30
Tasting Notes: If you liked the new Crown Royal Blackberry, you should definitely treat yourself to Indiana's original version of this, Huber's Blackberry whiskey. It doesn't get more "down on the farm" than this with real copper-pot distilled Indiana bourbon being blended with farm-grown blackberries, and bottled at 84 proof. There's nothing too sweet or cloying about this, and with the addition of lemonade you've got a perfect farmer's porch drink, all made right here in the Hoosier state.

30 Oct 2023 | Barton Bourbon Ball | 00:01:45
Tasting Notes: The key to any great cream liqueur is a balance between sweetness and alcohol. The key to any good Kentucky bourbon ball is to have a LOT more alcohol than sweetness. And so arrives Barton Bourbon Ball from the 1792 distillery, perhaps the PERFECT cream liqueur. Just NOW hitting the Indiana market, make it a point this fall to buy as many of these as you can get your hands on. A combo of chocolate and bourbon, this cream manages the classic alcohol bite of a ball but with the smoothness of a cream that makes you want more and more. Be careful, this stuff will creep. And while you're at it, may I suggest a glass of neat 1792 next to you as you sip.
08 Jul 2024 | Redemption Bourbon | 00:00:54
Looking for a great "everyday" cocktailing or rocks sipping bourbon at a great price? This is it! Classic 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley MGP at 88 proof. And we've got it all day for $19.99. There isn't a better "daily" bourbon sipper out there. Soft, smooth, and sweet with the classic Indiana cinnamon and light oak. Grab 'em at this price before they are gone.
03 Oct 2023 | Whiskey Review: Monk's Road Small Batch Wheated Bourbon | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes: Right in the heart of bourbon country lies the bucolic Abbey at Gethsamane, home to cheese and fruit cake-making monks and the one-time home of Thomas Merton, one of America's intellectual giants. If you are visiting any of the countryside distilleries, it's worth a stop, as the chapel itself is a true place of respite among Kentucky's rolling bluegrass. And NOW, just a few hundred yards down the road you can pay a visit to Wally Dant's latest project, the Log Still Distillery, home to several brands, one of them a 4 yr wheated bourbon aptly named Monk's Road. The 94 proof offering was contract distilled to their specifications and presents a fantastic combination of high florals and heavy leather. On the palate, an initial sweetness gives way to strong oak, lots of spice, and a mellowing, complex fruit finish.
24 Jun 2024 | Hibiki Suntory Japanese Harmony | 00:01:11
This blended Japanese whisky from the House of Suntory is the epitome of art in liquid form. We just don't ever get enough! Though Japanese whisky borrowed much of its foundational structure from Scotland, they've managed to create singular expressions through blending malt and grain that go beyond traditional Scottish forms. Long story short...this stuff is delicious, and worth your attention. Harmony is a non-age stated blend of malt and grain whisky with a unique sandalwood and rosemary nose with light and ethereal floral aromas. On the palate, candied orange peel and vanilla cream burst with complex but integrated fruit. Hints of the famed Mizunara oak linger through the finish.
19 Jun 2023 | Whiskey Review: Blanton's "Bourbon World" Single Barrel WH H, Floor 2 | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes: Big fat juicy slabs of oak greet your nostrils with growing licorice, cream de cassis, and dark berry emerging. Completely different than any Blanton's nose I've had before. On the palate more cream de cassis, Chambord, raspberries, and chocolate covered cherries. This stuff tastes downright berrylicious. Emerging honey through the finish but more berry notes pop up as well. LOVE THIS PICK!
01 Jul 2024 | Holladay Soft Red Winter Wheat Bottled-in-Bond | 00:01:12
Who would of thought that the best new bourbon distillery in the US would be coming out of Weston, MO? Well, the folks at McCormick's who have been in the alcohol business for decades knew they could do it, because they HAD done it in the past. Old dusty McCormick's whiskey decanters liter the top shelves of out of the way liquor stores. Fast forward 40 years, and Weston, MO is once again in the whiskey game with their Holladay brand. One of their best new releases is a 6yr old Bottled-in-Bond Missouri Straight Bourbons Whiskey utilizing soft red wheat in the mashbill. Respect that they waited this long, but even more respect that it tastes so darn good. Soft and fruity throughout, but with enough oak and proof to level out. Also, when Missouri passed their bourbon laws several years ago, they made sure that anything that uses the "Missouri Straight Bourbon" moniker HAS to by law use Missouri oak in the ageing process, which just happens to be the most premium oak in the world.

08 Jan 2024 | Whiskey Review: Russell's Reserve Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson F | 00:01:45
Set right up against the banks of the Kentucky River are the metal clad Camp Nelson warehouses owned by and filled with Wild Turkey bourbon. The "Single Rickhouse" project which began last year highlights batches of barrels drawn from single warehouses across the three WT barrel campuses. The 2023 release of Camp Nelson Warehouse F was drawn from floors 4 and 5 and bottled at 117.6 proof. The initial palate is a barrel roll of spice and nougat, herbs and oak, red fruit, and really gentle butterscotch and vanilla. Big, tasty, worth the price profile that just keeps going 30-60 seconds after the sip. Chewy and delicious.
11 Oct 2019 | Episode 5: The Best Indiana Bourbon | 00:50:13

Since the ripe, old age of nine, the grandson of Bill, Sr., and Margie has worked at virtually every position in the distillery. Today, Rob is in charge of not "screwing up the whisky" – as his grandfather so elegantly put it. This means honoring that patiently handmade, high-quality ethos of his forbearers while figuring out how to make more Maker's Mark for the world. 04 Jul 2023 | Whiskey Review: Buffalo Trace Bourbon World Single Barrel Warehouse O, Floor 3 #067 | 00:01:48
Tasting Notes: This is the first release of the 2023 Bourbon World Buffalo Trace Single Barrels, from Warehouse "O", floor 3, barrel #067. Nutty to start with peanut brittle, cinnamon butter, and caramel apple. On the palate, extremely sweet with TONS of spice/sugar depth. Much more complex than other BTs I've had in the best. Lengthy, spice-driven finish.

27 Jun 2024 | 1792 Small Batch | 00:01:06
Distilled and aged in the middle of Bardstown, Sazerac's vintage "Barton" distillery has been producing under-the-radar flavor bombs for decades, and it all starts and stops with 1792 Small Batch, their flagship high rye expression. Now finally emerging from allocation purgatory, we've got plenty on hand to enjoy every day, and at a fantastic price. Big oak has always epitomized the 1792 profile, but the rye adds just enough fruit to balance it out. If Buffalo Trace is your elegant week-night pour, then 1792 needs to be your Friday night special!
10 May 2023 | Tequila Review: Patron Anejo | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes: Patron sells so much blanco tequila their aged product sometimes gets overlooked, especially in the age of ULTRA luxury anejos like 1942 and Clase Azul, which is a mistake, because these well-aged Patron expressions are elegant, balanced, and insanely delicious! This Anejo presents a golden honey color with a lime and herbal nose giving way to caramel and cooked agave. On the palate, sweet earth and spice intermingle with more lime, then creamy butterscotch then a high-toned tropical fruit note to finish it off with just the right touch of spice. A world-class spirit.
14 Mar 2023 | Whiskey Review: Jameson Irish Whiskey | 00:01:48
Tasting Notes | |||
28 Jun 2023 | Whiskey Review: Penelope Barrel Strength | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes: Right on the heels of their exit to MGP, we thought we'd take a look at Penelope Barrel Strength, a "four-grain" whiskey that's a blend of 4yr old MGP mash bills, presumably the 21% rye, 36% rye, and wheated mash bills from MGP, bottled at 56% alc. Lots of honey, malt, fruit, and cinnamon on the nose, some classic MGP notes for sure. On the palate a balanced blend of spicy fruit, Big Red cinnamon gum, light leather, pineapple, and vanilla ice cream.
21 Aug 2023 | Vodka Review: Wheatley Vodka | 00:01:48
Tasting Notes: Likely produced from the same wheated mashbill as Weller and Pappy, Harlen Wheatley's own "Wheatley" vodka is unique in the vodka world, a blend of micro-distilled vodka and column distilled vodka, then married and distilled 3 more times in a dedicated vodka still, for a total of 10 unique distillations. The nose is pillowy soft vanilla, while the palate has the perfect amount of grainy weight with the very smooth and clean finish you'd expect from a super premium vodka. If you're a Tito's fan (and we are!) you may want to also give Wheatley's a shot, it's more of an on the rocks sipper.
19 Jan 2024 | Absolut Ocean Spray Variety 8pk Cocktails | 00:01:08
The combination of Absolut vodka and Ocean Spray cranberry juice has been around for a long time. We're actually surprised it took this long to bring this delicious combo to market, but now it's here! Real vodka, real juice in a variety pack that includes Cran-Pineapple, Cran-Raspberry, and the liquid Pez like Grape flavor that just goes down too easy!
05 Sep 2024 | 1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon | 00:01:03
For all the fanfare that Buffalo Trace's wheated recipes receive (Weller, Pappy) there isn't a lot of hype around the other major Sazerac distillery's 1792 Sweet Wheat, a recipe they've been releasing since 2015. But I think it's time people sit up and take notice. This whiskey is a knock out wheater with a healthy dose of herbs, oak, mint, and caramel on the nose. On the palate, it's sweet, but not as sweet as the name suggests with a balance of leather, caramel chew, and vanilla. If you like Maker's, Larceny, Weller, and Pappy, don't skip the 1792 Sweet Wheat!
06 Mar 2020 | Episode 25: New Item Roundup | 00:49:05

20 Jul 2023 | Whiskey Review: Buffalo Trace "Bourbon World" Single Barrel Warehouse I, Floor 7 #110 | 00:01:47
Tasting Notes: The 4th barrel in our 2023 Buffalo Trace single barrel series is a HIGH FLOOR oak and spice bomb. It's the 7th floor of a 9-floor concrete and tile building, so soft, balanced, regulated heat is likely the condition relative to other warehouses/floor combos. Most mature oak profile of the set so far. Bourbon candy aroma, deep set oak with some caramel corn as well. On the palate, loads of sugar and oak, maple syrup, rock candy, candy apple, and cinnamon spice throughout. This is rich, balanced oaky, dessert bourbon, and just so darn drinkable at 90 proof.

04 Dec 2023 | Rum Review: Plantation 5 Year Rum | 00:01:34
Tasting Notes: It's that time of year whether for baked goods or egg nog, when people who know nothing about rum try to buy a bottle for this or that recipe and need a little help. Well have no fear, because the best aged rum under $30 is Plantation's Signature Edition 5yr old Barbados Rum. It has the perfect amount of natural spice and drinkability in a sipping rum but goes PERFECTLY with baked goods, egg nog, or any other thing that calls for "rum" in the recipe. Trust us, you'll love it.
16 Feb 2024 | Whiskey Review: Evan Williams 1783 | 00:01:06
We are always looking for the most under the radar brands that offer a great value, and Evan Williams 1783 fits the bill perfectly. It's not a fancy bottle, but at 90 proof with a more than 4yr minimum mature age profile, I'd put this one right up against Elmer T Lee in a blind decanter test. Elegant nose of butterscotch, mint, wild honey, and lemon. On the palate, perfectly portioned delivery of sweet oak along with space, and more butterscotch to finish. Never pass up a $20 bourbon that no one is drinking, because THAT'S the next hard to get!
27 Mar 2020 | Episode 28: What's In Your Cupboard? | 00:30:00

17 Jul 2023 | Whiskey Review: Buffalo Trace "Bourbon World" Single Barrel Warehouse P, Floor 5 #145 | 00:01:41
Tasting Notes: Exploding herbs, leather, and fruit on the nose. Warehoue P, Floor 5. Unlike the berry driven Warehouse O and L, this P warehouse, floor 5 really brings the lighter, more floral and elegant notes to the party. Silky and soft on the mid-palate with more emerging florals, rock candy, pez, vanilla milkshake and a lightly peppermint finish. Get this one slightly chilled, no ice, and ENJOY! |
