On this episode I have Ansley Stewart. Ansley is a Houston Texas based photographer who is drawn to the lonely places in a attempt to grab images of sights fighting the battle against time. Being surrounded by endless miles of concrete, smog, and sound, the first time he stood on the face of a cliff overlooking the minuscule river far down in the valley, his perspective shifted. Ansley called me a few weeks ago excited to tell me about the box of Koda chrome slides he found at an estate sale. He has been scanning and digitizing all of them with yes Leica M11 and an adapted Macro lens. Ansley and his wife have painstakingly been researching the history of the people and moments captured in the images. From the owner being in the Texas woman’s hall of fame, to family outings, To Baylor University basket ball and the airplane trip to the Final 4 game at Madison square garden in 1948 or 49 as well as moments captured at a half built Baylor university football stadium against Texas A&M to moments where the serial killer candyman Dean Corll buried his victims. His end goal is to digitize the collection, preserve history and get the collection back into the hands of the family. Forbes' approach to photography comes from an underlying fascination with people and their interaction with the environment. He has an uncanny knack of bringing personality to the ordinary. Forbes' debut monograph Collected memories was published by the German publisher Hatje Cantz in 2023. Shortly after printing, a book signing event was held at Paris Photo 2023. The book was also a shortlisted finalist at PHOTO 2024 for the Australian & New Zealand Photobook of the Year. His photographs have been exhibited at solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia at both public and commercial galleries. From Steve's Website Steve began skating in 1976 at the age of 12 and started his career at age 14. His first sponsor was Campbell Skate Park. In 1979, Caballero entered a national skate contest in Escondido, Ca. After finishing fifth place, he was approached by Stacy Peralta who offered him sponsorship with Powell Peralta and Steve joined the infamous Bones Brigade. He turned pro in 1980 during the Gold Cup series at the Oasis Skatepark, Southern California. By this time, Caballero had invented the 'Caballerial', a skateboarding trick also known as the fakie 360 ollie. Scott was one of the first photographers ever to receive the designation Apple Certified Professional Trainer (T3) for Apple’s Aperture. Scott was recently awarded the designation Signed Master with the Studio Of Masters in China and is the author of several photography books. Devin’s powerful imagery of Black life has been featured in New York Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Aperture. On this episode Joe D’Agostino Joe is a photographer based in New Jersey Joe grew up surfing, skateboarding and studying Jiu Jitsu and For the past 24 years Joe has worked as a police officer where he serves as SWAT Team Commander and Law Enforcement Sniper. He has helped spearhead the resiliency program at his police department which helps first responders understand and cope with the effects of PTSD. Joe has been a contributing writer for FujiLove magazine and has had his work featured in numerous periodicals.
One of the most important reasons for Joe’s body of work can be attributed to the therapeutic nature of photography. He has found that spending more than half of his life in a career that can often expose the horrors in life, photography allows him to look at the world through different eyes. Finding the beauty in everyday life helps Joe control his own journey with PTSD. Joe believes that photography is a journey on a road that has no ending but can only be traveled.
