3 Essential Things for Tackling the Needs of Your Team
Every team that has ever existed has been presented with some sort of challenge. In fact, some people might argue that the sole purpose of a team is to tackle problems and overcome challenges. While there are many great resources on how to build a successful team, we think there are really only three essential elements for teams to tackle problems and thrive. In this episode, we discuss how to embrace compassion, courage, and connection to build successful teams. We also share a few tips for implementing these essential things on your team.

What we've learned about implementing change and handling conflict
Implementing Change and Dealing with Conflict is as common in teams and organizations as paperclips and email. These things can be planned, or spontaneous. They can be held with great care, or thrown about and discarded like outdated sales reports.
Change and conflict can be messy, ugly, hurtful and the cause of great frustration and anxiety.
But if you’ve worked in at least a somewhat healthy environment, you know that these two things, when handled with intentionality and grace, can be the catalyst for significant personal and business growth.
But handling them with intentionally and grace, well, that’s not always so easy.
Hello everyone, my name is Nathan Freeburg and you are listening to the Leadership Vision Podcast where we share our expertise in the discovery practice, and implementation of a Strengths-Based approach to people, teams, and culture.
Today on the podcast, Sara Schlipp-Reidel and I reflect on the topics of implementing change and handling conflict, through the lens of a recent team engagement we led. About a week ago, we worked with a client in the bay area who we’ve had the privilege to get to know for the past year. We lead them through these topics, which, as it turns out, was extremely timely for where this team was at.
On this episode, Sara and I will briefly share the Leadership Vision approach to change and conflict, then reflect on just a couple of the things we learned from working with this particular team.
We’ll share some new insights about the topics on change and conflict, as well as the process of facilitating them in the midst of a team in the thick of it. We’ll also offer a few suggestions that we think may help you navigate these two important and inevitable aspects of life on any sort of team. So keep listening.
Now normally when recording one of these reflection episodes, Sara and I would have chatted on the way to the airport, or at the airport. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out this time, but we did connect via Skype shortly after the job. Sound quality aside, there are a couple of internet hiccups that I couldn’t edit out, this may have been a little better since it gave both of us the opportunity to reflect a bit and allow our lessons learned to marinate into what you’re about to hear.
I also wanted to tell you just a tiny bit about this team. I can’t share exactly who the company is, but what’s relevant to this conversation is that this particular team is part of a very large organization who has been around since the last 80’s. They have offices all over the world, and at least two team members work and lead their own teams several time zones away. The larger organization also has some pretty solid business and cultural practices in place. They have all sorts of great vision and mission and values stuff flowing through the organization.

Today on the podcast, Brian Schubring and I discuss 7 elements that lead to team health. We conducted a series of team engagement series interviews and identified these seven things as being consistent signs of healthy teams. In today’s episode, we’re going to share multiple examples of each of these seven elements to help you begin identifying the health of your team. This is important because if you know what to look for, you can do some preventative care and guide your team to a healthier future.

Our culture is obsessed with goals. Personal, professional, physical, financial... you name it, goal setting is big business. But why do so many of us set goals that we either can’t or simply don’t attain? Is there a better way to set goals, should we even set goals at all, and what, if anything, might our Strengths do to help us get there?
Today on the podcast, Amy Rollinger and I will give you answers to these questions... well not really, but we will kick around a few ideas that we think may be helpful to you in your own attempts at self-improvement.
We’ll chat about some basic thoughts related to goal setting, and then share some personal examples and stories of how our own understanding of Strengths helps us on this journey. For simplicity, we’re going to talk about setting goals in the arena of physical fitness because 1.) most people set some sort of goal in this area every year, so we can all relate to it in our own way, and 2.) our physical bodies are our most valuable asset as a leader, so we better take care of it. We’ll also give some examples as it relates to leadership, family life, parenthood, and more.
We also reference a variety of other sources, so if you want to go deeper on any of that, check the links in the show notes or check out our blog post at leadershipvisionconsulting.com.

What does a Behavior-Based Interpretation of Strengths Look Like?
Our approach to interpreting Strengths is based on the behaviors of individuals, not a set of definitions found in a book. A definition does not take into consideration your personality. Your Strengths are detected in your vocabulary, posture, emotions, presence, attitudes, and actions. Understanding that your Strengths come alive in you differently from someone else gives you the freedom to interpret your Strengths as a dynamic set of talents in light of your experiences, environment, and personality.
Hello everyone, my name is Nathan Freeburg, and today on the podcast, we’ll be talking about how over the past 20+ years, we have taken this behavior-based approach to our psychometric of choice, CliftonStrengths®.
We will talk about why we’ve taken this approach, define what a behavior-based approach is, share some examples, and provide insight for how you might be able to take your behavior-based approach in understanding your Strengths.
Whether you are learning about your Strengths or helping others on their Strengths journey, this approach is effective for the interpretation and application of Strengths. So listen now.

Learning how to Listen Better. Understanding the 1to1 Conversation
Welcome to the Leadership Vision Podcast where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of a strengths-based approach to people, teams, and culture.
The 1 to 1 conversation is the foundation of everything we do when building strong teams. If you want your team to operate at the highest levels, first you have to understand your team members. By extension then, it’s good for them to understand themselves.
At Leadership Vision, the way we help teams and organizations do that, is by beginning with a one to one conversation.
Our clients recognize that the 1 to 1 conversation is a key differentiator for Leadership Vision. This 45 - 60 minute conversation is meant to stretch your thinking and challenge your assumptions. It also shines the light on how you can use your strengths positively, to impact and influence others.
But at the core of this conversation is the story of each individual person. Their hopes, fears, dreams, desires, family background and cultural context. All of that! You’d be amazed by how powerful it can be to simply listen to another person tell their story. By paying attention and asking thoughtful questions to move the story along, the 1 to 1 conversation can be a catalyst for deeper introspection, greater self-awareness, and personal acceptance. While the magnitude of this individual growth and change is immeasurable and sometimes unknown, it is undeniably profound.
Today on the podcast, Brian Schubring and I are talking about how to have a conversation with someone that helps them better understand how they are wired, within the context of their Strengths and their story. Brian and I talk about his earliest days of learning from the original Strengths Guru’s, how he has tweaked and modified those lessons over the years, and also why it’s so important to listen and not insert yourself into someone else’s story.
If you’re not someone who is using Strengths for anything besides your own personal growth and development, well, keep listening. While this episode is rooted in the world of Strengths, and perhaps seems like it’s just for Strengths professionals, there’s some very practical advice for anyone interested in having more interesting conversations at your next team off-site, family gathering, or awkward school fundraiser. So keep listening.

According to dictionary.com, vulnerability is the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.
Yuck! That sounds terrible, no wonder nobody wants to be vulnerable. Who wants to willingly open themselves up to being attacked?
I certainly don’t, but as it turns out, there’s actually a tremendous amount of positive things that can come from being vulnerable.
A personal hero of many of ours around the Leadership Vision office, is Brene Brown. She is a social scientist, author, speaker, and has done significant research on, and written extensively about the topic of vulnerability.
According to Dr. Brown, Vulnerability is “the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.” It also builds trust, builds resilience, and helps you establish your personal values.
With that in mind, maybe we all should be a little more vulnerable today.
Today on the podcast, Sara Schlipp-Riedel and I talk about vulnerability. We barely scratch the surface of this deep and important topic, but we hope, at least, it will give you the permission to be a little more vulnerable and embody all of who you are meant to be.
We work with a lot of people in all industries, and over and over again, we find them struggling to express the truth of who they are. To put this in Strengths terms, they’re holding back, and not fully living out of the best parts of themselves. Maybe they are a little embarrassed about how Disciplined, or Focused they are. Maybe they don’t like that they are constantly asking questions, or always running to the next thing. I’ve met countless people who are stuffing the best parts of themselves for fear of being rejected, made fun of, or not valued if they are themselves. How many of us struggle with feelings of being not enough, or being too much of something?
Now obviously there is tremendous complexity within each of our individual stories, but we all stand to gain from hearing those stories. Sometimes that takes risking something, stepping out in vulnerability, and asking others to accept who we are.
Sara and I recorded this in what sounds like a cave, or a basement bunker of some type. It kind of was actually, but the echos were tremendous, and I know it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, bu

We have two new FREE resources available to help you better understand your Strengths. One is directed toward individuals, and the other is for teams. But using them together will help you get the most out of your Strengths.
For Individuals - DOWNLOAD INDIVIDUAL INSIGHTS The first new resource we’re offering is our Three Insights to Interpreting and Applying Strengths download.
Now if you’ve been following us for any length of time, you know that our approach to interpreting Strengths is based on the behaviors of individuals, not a set of definitions found in a book. A definition doesn’t take into consideration your personality. Your Strengths are detected in your vocabulary, posture, emotions, presence, attitudes, and actions. Understanding that your Strengths come alive in you differently from someone else gives you the freedom to interpret your Strengths as a dynamic set of talents in light of your experiences, environment, and personality.
Over the past 20+ years, we have taken this behavior-based approach to our psychometric of choice, CliftonStrengths®, and noticed three insights emerge from more than 50,000 conversations. These three insights can help unlock more of your uniqueness as an individual and better understand how you contribute to a team.
So in this free download, we share these three insights, give you a question to reflect on for each one, then ask you to jot down some examples that you can share with a friend, colleague, or family member. This document not only gives you more insight, but will also help you leverage your Strengths to deepen your compassion, help you take courageous and vulnerable risks, and grow relational trust.
For Teams - DOWNLOAD TEAM GUIDE The second new resource we’re offering is our Team Insight Download which contains two of our favorite process questions to ask teams.
At Leadership Vision we have a saying, “A team is anyone a leader has invited to the table.” But when the team gets to the table, then what? There is a reason your team is a team. Perhaps your team needs to accomplish some objectives or work on a project together. Maybe your team just needs to get along or get to know each other.
This download contains a team-building exercise that is a simple practice to help you learn more about team members through relational questions and intentional conversations. It’s an abbreviated form of something we do with our client teams when working together in person or over Zoom. It includes some notes for facilitators, the discussion prompts, along with some reflection questions.
Cohesive teams consist of people who understand themselves, their influence, and have a curio

A tool to help you understand the Strength of WOO®
Do you have the Strength of WOO®, or do you know someone who does?
After engaging with over 50k people and their strengths, we have found the theme of WOO® is one of the most misunderstood. At its core, WOO® is a social intelligence theme. WOO® is not just a cheerleader! Instead, WOO® is adept and skillful in the social setting.
And we know that each person has a unique expression of their Strengths, but how do you know what that expression is? When two people share the same Strength, how can you determine the similarities and differences?
At Leadership Vision, we have created a tool called a ThemePrint to help you process and understand your Strengths. And since WOO® is one of the most-searched-for terms on our website, we thought we would make this ThemePrint available to download for just $4.99.
The content of this download is new and exclusive to this ThemePrint - meaning it’s not online or in any books or found in any other curriculum.
So, if you’d like to learn more about how you WOO® and perhaps feel less misunderstood by others, click the link in the show notes to download this helpful resource today.

Describe a person who or place that has shaped you. How/Why?
It’s just one question, but we hope it will lead to several other questions to deepen your understanding not only your Strengths, but your role on a team, in a family, or any other context in which you exist. We feel it’s important to reflect on where your Strengths have come from and how your Strengths have shaped who you are today. Because we also believe that that knowledge will help you get to where you want to go tomorrow and help you reach your highest capacity for influence.

The Strengths conversation is at the heart of what we do at Leadership Vision. It is both art and science. It's structured yet organic. There are rules, suggestions, and a lot of room to go with your gut, but it is a proven process for helping people understand what makes them unique. If we had to synthesize all the things we've learned about Strengths conversations over the past 20 years, working with Strengths in the past ten years of training others, it comes down to three things. In this episode, we share three keys to hosting a successful and generative Strengths conversation.

Three Questions to help you Navigate Personal Change
In this episode, we discussed the importance of reflecting on transition and share three questions to help you succeed. Fall is naturally a time of change, from the changing of the seasons, the leaves, or more specific changes like children going back to school and business preparing for the year's final quarter. Brian, Linda, and Nathan reflect on the past few months of changes and discuss what we each need to be best prepared for what is next.
We discuss this and then ask you to reflect on three questions:
1. what sort of transition or change am I going through right now? 2. what do I need to succeed during this time? And 3. what does well-being mean for me today?

It's the end of the year 2022, and as Brian, Linda, and I were reflecting on what we wanted to discuss for our last episode of the year, we hit record, and it led to this wonderful conversation. This episode's theme is authentic connection, purposeful connection, and understanding the why behind what we're doing.

Leaders are taught that being tougher is the key to overcoming any challenge. But what does it mean to be tough? For many, that may mean hiding your fears, insecurities, or weaknesses no matter what you’re up against. It’s the idea that rolling up one’s proverbial sleeves, putting in more hours, or grinding it out is the only way to get what you need.
But is that really true? That the key to toughness and, therefore, success for leaders comes down to who can hold on tighter? We don’t think so, and neither does the author, performance expert, executive coach, and runner, Steve Magness.
We’ll share a brief overview of this book, give a couple of our biggest takeaways, then share a few tips to help you better understand toughness and how you can apply that to your leadership and do Hard Things.

How the Best Leaders Slow Down and Make Better Decisions When Faced with Challenges
Leaders face challenges all the time. Some are small, like a team member struggling with a project. Others are large, like a global pandemic. But no matter the size of the challenge, the best leaders all have one thing in common: they know how to slow down and make better decisions through action and accountability.
In this episode, you'll hear what we've learned working with the best leaders on how to slow down and make better decisions when faced with challenges:
Take a step back. When facing a challenge, getting caught up in the moment is easy. Your adrenaline is pumping, your mind is racing, and you want to make a decision and move on. But before you do anything, take a step back and give yourself time to process what's happening. This will help you to calm down, think more clearly, and make a better decision.
Gather information. Once you've taken a step back, it's time to gather information. This doesn't mean you need to have all the answers before you make a decision. But it does mean that you need to understand the situation as best you can. Talk to people who are involved, research the issue, and gather as much data as possible. The more information you have, the better you'll be to make sound decisions.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. No one is an island. And even the best leaders need help sometimes. If you're struggling to make a decision, don't be afraid to ask for help from your team, colleagues, or a trusted advisor. Sometimes, all you need is a fresh perspective to help you see things more clearly.
These tips can help you slow down, make better decisions, and lead your team through even the most challenging times.
If you're a leader, we encourage you to use these tips the next time you're faced with a challenge. By slowing down, gathering information, and asking for help, you can make better decisions and lead your team through even the most difficult times.

Brian recounts a personal story from 22 years ago when he presented a proposal to a client and missed an opportunity to negotiate a higher contract. The lesson he learned was that leaders learn from the past, the present, and the future. They let past lessons lie, learn from the present moment, and prepare for future lessons.

Strengths misunderstandings and what to do about them
Today on the Leadership Vision Podcast, Steph Wahlund and I are doing a deep dive on the nuances of a couple of Themes of Strength. Specifically, Analytical and Deliberative, Maximizer and Competition, and Achiever and Activator. As we mentioned at the top of the show, our original intent was to talk about the ways Strengths have been misunderstood. Common questions we get about them, and to explain the finer points of how certain Themes of Strengths manifest in general ways that everyone can understand. We still do that in this episode, but as you’ll hear, Steph and I started talking more about the way our own Strengths show up and are misunderstood. We talked through a few of the highs and lows of working with someone who has a Strength that is misunderstood. We also veer into the lane of our Team Engagement series, but it’s actually a really helpful conversation that I think anyone listening can take something away from as it related to working with others on a team.

Reflections from the First Half: Resilience, Partnerships, and Big Dreams
Are you ready to dream bigger and overcome fear? What if you could reflect on the past, adapt to the present, and more robustly plan for the future? Brace yourself as we take you through a journey that traverses the peaks and valleys of our experiences in the first half of the year, and the bold dreams we're churning for the second half.
Our journey has been a myriad of experiences. We pause mid-year to ruminate on our leaps and dips, sharing our individual perspectives on our progress. The resilience of the human spirit has been a constant theme as we've partnered with Brian, finding joy even amidst challenges. This partnership, coupled with exposure to different environments and cultures, has been a catalyst for our growth and expansion.
And then there's our online community. Is it misread, wrongly implemented, or merely in need of more time and effort? We've had our share of these debates. Recognizing when we're sowing seeds versus transplanting ideas has been crucial. The key? Patience and time. And let's not forget about dreaming bigger and battling fear. We acknowledge Linda's leadership in shaping our dreams and vision, and take a hard look at how our fears can sometimes limit us. But, here’s the thing - we're committed to living a big enough dream in the second half of the year, and we encourage you to join us on this journey.

Our team likes to have fun. We laugh a lot, we tell jokes, and generally, try to keep things light when we’re together. Despite our physical distance, we’re closer than most teams - we tend to share some of the ups and downs of life with one another. We also share goofy stuff too and tend to know random facts about one another.
On this episode of the podcast, you’re going to get an insiders look into our team. A few months ago, we were testing out new podcast equipment and decided we should have five of us on one episode. It ended up that I got to chat with Sara, Linda, Carrie, and Steph. Someone found a list of 50 questions you should ask kids, and we just started asking each other random question. We did this for three reasons:
We believe strongly that teams who have fun together are more productive, and ultimately, stay together longer. We think this episode illustrates a little bit of that, and hope it will inspire you to find ways to keep things fun on your team.
It shows how simple it is to get conversations going with your team members. Even a superficial starting question can lead to a much more in-depth discussion and ways of knowing one another.
