ABOUT THE GUEST:    When Bob's children Andrew Wood and Erin Katherine were young, Bob made up "Woody and Katie Stories" based on their middle names. Fast forward a few decades and Drew's son Arlo asked "Bear King" (the name he calls Bob) to tell him a "wind story." That prompted Bob to create this podcast series, drawing on the arc of the adventure books he loved as a kid and continuing the tradition of naming characters loosely on children's names. Grandsons Arlo is "Loar" and Oren is "Roen." Grandnieces Aurora, Delaney and Allessandra are featured, too. They visit neighborhoods where family members live.

Before he retired from the TriMet transit agency, Bob oversaw the architectural design of the Tilikum Crossing Bridge of the People over the Willamette River. He also managed the agency's alternative energy projects. Today, Bob lives in a Portland high-rise "sky cave" condo tower by the river, bridge and Ross Island. He and his wife "Bear Queen" drive an all-electric car.

Hey Friends~

Are you wondering  why your child echoes you?  Do they not really answer the question, but actually repeat what you say,  back to you?  This pattern of communication is indicative of a Gestalt Language Processor.   This pattern is common among kiddos with autism. Kids without autism  may also use this pattern of language, though it is most common in the very early years.

How do you manage this?

  • Always respond
  • Be a sleuth - figure out what that echo might represent
  • Embrace their attempts to communicate
  • Understand this is a script

Listen in for examples and ideas for how to respond, what to look for, understanding the scripts, and how to increase your child’s  interactive language in supportive ways.

ABOUT THE GUEST:

In 2003, Krys was living what many would call “a good life." She was in her 10th year of a career as a police officer, and as far as anyone was concerned, she was successful. Then a serious car crash woke her up to the reality that, while she had all the trappings of success, the success was empty – her life had no meaning, and she no longer knew who she was or what she wanted in life.  In that moment, she promised herself things would change, that she would do whatever it took to create a life for herself that had meaning and purpose. It took Krys several years of searching to discover the secret to creating the life she longed for and to create a life that is interesting, purpose driven, and fun. As an Empowerment Coach, Krys’ mission is to share what she has learned with successful women professionals and entrepreneurs who are tired of feeling stuck in life and uncertain as they look to the future, and who are ready to take action now to create a life they love.

18 Jan 2024112 Do You Hesitate To Interrupt Your Child's Activity? 4 Steps To Easier Transitions00:16:58

Hey Friends~

Many children struggle with making a transition from something they love to do, to stopping it!

That is a hard transition for most of us.  If your child - or a child you spend time with, struggles to change activities (to transition) from one thing to the next, today’s episode is for you!!

We are going to talk about a strategy that is essentially 4 steps, plus celebrations, of course!  FOUR MAIN STEPS to getting your child to more willingly, more easily, accept a change of activity, a transition!

So welcome to today’s program!  You will be glad you are here!

P.S. You may want a pen and sticky note to post these steps on the fridge!

MAKING TRANSITIONS EASIER:

1- Acknowledge & Agree with your child that what is happening presently is good, and they like it.  Ex:  “I know you love playing this game.  It’s fun! I am glad you are having a good time.”

2- Inform them of the change.  Ex: “In 2 minutes, we  need to stop.”  Even better:  “In 2 min, it’s time to wash your hands for lunch.”

3- Let them continue for the time you told them.

4-Tell when the time is up ( in a happy spirit).  Ex: It’s time! Wash your hands for lunch.” Even better:  “Good job playing! You get to return to this game later today!  Now, we get to have lunch. Wash your hands!  (obviously adjust to match the language ability of your child).

Next week:  Tools to help with transitions!

Always cheering you on!

ABOUT THE GUEST: ALY YOUNG

Aly's background in psychology and sociology led her to explore her passion for education and learning by teaching in various settings, ranging from private to public to charter schools. 02 Feb 202315 EVERDAY PARENT: Wendy Cocke! Have you ever wondered how to successfully work from home with kids around? Strategies that help children experience work positively.00:20:25

Hello Parents!

If you have ever wanted to find a flexible schedule to work your job from home?  If so, have you stopped because you don't know how to do it with elementary-age children at home?  Listen in to hear what worked for Wendy Cocke.

Wendy Cocke, Author of the #1 bestselling book, “Making Flex Work: Defining Success on Your Own Terms” is the founder of Engineering Leadership solutions and a working mother of two. Prior to starting her business, Wendy spent over 20 years as an engineer in Fortune 500 companies leading global teams. When her oldest child, who is now in middle school, was just an infant, Wendy struggled to find balance. She felt like she was failing at home and at work, so she took matters into her own hands. After 11 months, she was able to convince her company to let her go part time, something that had never been done at the leadership level before. Wendy was told that her career would “stall,” that she was “walking away from everything she had built,” and that “she would never get promoted again,” but she didn’t believe them! She knew there had to be a way to find the balance she and her family desperately needed.  Today, through lived experience and intentional language, Wendy’s children understand that work is something people do to provide for the lifestyle they enjoy, and they work together as a family to seamlessly transition between work and play.

I know you will LOVE this episode!  Enjoy and be INSPIRED!  In Gratitude,

Dinalynn

25 Dec 2023105 Building Language Through Imagination And The Christmas Story, part 100:17:46

Hey Friends~

A Very Merry & Happy Christmas to you!!

Children have great imaginations. Their imaginations aid them in social emotional development, cognitive development, physical development, and more!

Sometimes that imaginary place seems silly like it doesn’t really have meaning and other times we really see them act out what it is that they’re learning.

Today will use the Christmas Story to teach you how to allow and let that imagination flow along with a story, where you are encouraging their imagination to build and grow. This is very important as we want our children to be able to cast a vision in their future life, set goals, and even comprehend stories they hear and stories they read!

Join in for a "Let's Imagine" lesson that builds foundations, gives choice, and without even focusing on it, you are teaching language, building connection, and cognitive development!!  We focus on HOW to move through the story with them.

Watch for next episode when I explain how the language development happens when we use imagination!

Always cheering you on!

Words have power!

Sometimes our children say things TO US that are painful.  It is difficult to know how to handle it!

We want to be gracious but we also want the harsh words to end!  We want to pass on our values!

And how to handle it in a way that passes on values and isn’t “preachy?”

Wisdom comes from experience. Kids don’t have many experiences yet, Therefore, they do not have wisdom yet.

02 Jan 2024107 How Your Internal Dialog Confuses Simple Communication With Your Child00:19:35

Hey Friends ~

According to research a small amount of our communication is actually the words that we say.  Our tone, gestures, and our internal emotions communicated a vast amount to our children.

Children pick up on our internal energy when we speak. If inside, you are full of self-criticism, while your words say, I love you , the kids can feel confusion. They get a mixed message.

!! And they react to the confusion !!

Today we’re going to talk about our mixed messages that create communication confusion, simply due to the energy you bring to the interaction. Then strategies to help both you and your child.

Note:  If you like this this episode, you will LOVE Thursday's episode with Expert: Dewey Kraus giving us strategies on Self-Compassion in parenting.

Hey Friends,

Do you ever wish that you could Re-Parent yourself?  Well, you can it’s true.

Many people come to adulthood and have some baggage from their upbringing. In fact, most everybody has some kind of experience that they brought with them to adulthood. Those traumatic or even "normal" experiences are not helping them be the best parent they want to be, nor it is helping them be the best human they want to be. Something lingers... even after you try to forget, forgive, and know it is done.

I want you to know that: You can speak to that part of you that is still small, still young, and still growing.  You can be the parent to yourself so you get what the little you needed.

Hey Friends,

What Is The Motive Behind Your Child's Behavior?  Sometimes what our kids do is weird! It makes no sense!  This is true when we look through our logical, adult brain!  The problem is that part of our kid's brains is not firing the same way as yours is!  Therefore, you think differently!  Thank God, our kids have parents!

Today's episode is based on a conversation with a friend as we reminisced what we learned - and what we understood - when our kids were young.  Distilled down, today's topic is what I think was the biggest game-changer for ME in my parenting.  I hope this blesses you!

04 Apr 2024132 Erin LoPorto: Why Telling Your Child, “Don’t Worry” Doesn’t Help00:26:34

Hey Friends~

Your Feelings are a message from your body.  It’s the same for your kids.

How do you attune to your child’s feelings - instead of telling them not to feel as they do?

Do quickly tell your child how to behave?  (“Don’t worry.”  “Settle down.”  or “You don’t need to feel that way.”)  This kind of response backfires in relationships

Or

Do you reflect back to them how they are feeling?  This is not an easy skill.  However, it is a skill that is learnable!

27 Mar 202330 Series: “Why Won’t the Kids Listen!?” part3: Tools For When Language Processing is Difficult00:22:41

Hello Friends,

In PART 3 of this episode SERIES, "Why Won't the Kids Listen!?"  We unpack 3 patterns of auditory processing struggles.  This is when a child doesn't actually process what they hear, you can think of it as struggling to process language. Even if your child is good with language, the activities are still great BRAIN EXERCISES and are helpful for all ages while learning new information!

After listening to the 3 patterns, you will walk away with strategies, or "TOOLS," to use right away to help your child improve their processing skills.  So grab your coffee and notebook with a pen!  I hope you find the answers you are needing!  Please know you may have completely different patterns!  Or maybe you have never identified what your child's patterns are! Hopefully this episode will give you ideas for noticing what is going on for your kiddo.

As you listen to the ideas presented, some of you will find all you need to make the difference you wish for with your kiddos.  That is SO GREAT!!  However, some of you have bigger struggles and concerns with your children, and you will want to know more and get specific help!  If this is you, Email me at and we can book a call to discuss ways you can work with me directly.   NOTE: in MARCH 2023, I have a huge discount for the first 3 people that sign up to work together!

13 Sep 2024179 Lois Letchford: Dyslexia? Put Away What Is Not Working And Make Learning Fun00:29:29

Hey Friends~

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a communication disorder that interferes with learning, understanding, and using language. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA says DLD “is one of the most common developmental disorders, affecting approximately 1 in 14 children in kindergarten.”  To add to the confusion, over the years, “DLD has also been called specific language impairment, language delay, or developmental dysphasia.”  Source:  https://www.nidcd.nih.gov/sites/default/files/Documents/health/voice/developmental-language-disorder.pdf

Is your child struggling in school?  Not listening well?  &  Unable to communicate what they mean?

Today’s guest, Lois Letchford, shares her story that led to connecting the dots for her son’s understanding and learning in the presence of  Dyslexia, Developmental Language Disorder, and other developmental struggles.  She put away what was not working and used what her son was interested in.  She says, “Curiosity propagates in the brain in untold ways.”   She gives practical descriptions that you can use, whether you are a teacher or a parent, to help your children better.

This episode is a must listen for Parents, Educators, Child-care workers, Speech Pathologists,  and all those living or working with children!  Please share this episode with those who are!

 Always cheering you on!

28 Dec 2023106 Building Language Through Imagination And The Christmas Story, part 200:16:22

Hey Friends,

Last time we talked about using the Christmas story as a way to enhance imagination.  Today we add to that story with practical tips where and how you build language during the role-play of a complex story.

Children have great imaginations. Their imaginations aid them in social emotional development, cognitive development, physical development, and more! Sometimes that imaginary place seems silly like it doesn’t really have meaning and other times we really see them act out what it is that they’re learning.

This role-play activity can be done at all ages, so your family can do it together.  Later, you can use this strategy for role-playing other situations to help your child understand what to expect.

Getting ready to have fun and copy what you heard!

Always cheering you on!

Instead of helping us meet our goals, those voices sabotage us. Our kids are the same way. The persistent message that derails what you really want is your "Saboteur."  We ALL have them and the patterns were established early in life.  There are 9 main voices.  By learning what your saboteurs are, you will be able to help yourself and your children have better self-talk. This leads to better behavior, better communication, and better connection.

Hey Friends~

When our kiddos are out of control, it’s tempting to scream, “Stop it!!”

What if? … you could look at it differently and narrate what’s going on?

What would that look like?

Today will discuss the effect Narration has on language development as well as emotional regulation. When we narrate what is happening for our children, we give them a gift. It’s a powerful tool to help with behavior and give language to the experience. And when you use this kind of tool, it helps you step back from the experience and not be so triggered!

Dear Parents,

Parenting is tough work!  Did you know that teaching speech sounds can actually make you a better parent?  It's true!!   In speech sound teaching, you become more aware of the little nuances of learning and what your child needs.  Your child becomes more aware of the small pieces needed and deepens trust to do the hard things.

Today, we talk about a game that is simple and you can do at home - whether your teaching speech sounds or math facts!  This is a way to take the hard and let your child feel like it is easy.

Spoiler:  The first part is foundational, so you know how and why this game works in your child's developing brain.

Let me know how it goes!

Sincerely,

23 Oct 202390 What Does Improv Have To Do With Parenting? EVERYTHING!! with Chris Trew00:31:54

Hey Friends,

Have you ever considered that IMPROV helps us to be better listeners?  How about that we parent better?  What if IMPROV  gives parents the space to think and interact differently with their kids?

It's true.

Improv improves listening skills for parents and kids!  This is a practical application to all communication. Improv isn’t just for laughter.  It’s not just for comedy.  Improve creates better listeners that are more present, more engaged, more joyful, and less stressed.

Today you will learn the technique, “Yes, and ” from our guest, Chris Trew.

Improv is listening that drops everything but in engagement. You become a confident communicator who gets your child to listen - by your example.  Being good at Improv CREATES IN YOU, AS A PARENT, the skills you want to exemplify in your children. We learn playful ways to smooth out conflict in our homes. So many benefits!!

Hey Friends~

When is the temper tantrum not a temper tantrum?

Well, sometimes it’s the way our children learned to communicate! We didn’t mean to teach them to scream and shout in order to get the attention they want, but it had worked… and they’re young…

And now we want to teach them a new way to communicate.  That is WITH WORDS!

If this is familiar, You will learn a lot and get ideas from today’s episode!  Get a pencil and paper to take notes because this is a strategy-filled episode!

30 Jun 202358 Does Your Child Say the R Sound Wrong? 3 Real-Life Ways Parents Can Help at Home!00:18:44

Hello Parents!

The R sound is one of the most common reasons a child comes to speech therapy in the schools.  Speech Pathologists have lots of ways to help, and still some kids continue to struggle.  However, there are somethings you can do at home to increase the likelihood your kiddo won’t struggle with R.

So - if you have every wondered what you can do to help your child at home with R this episode is for you!  Today, I give you strategies that help for older kids with sound errors as well as the toddler that hasn’t been expected to say the R sound yet.  So come along for some well-rounded advice in sound development.

The strategies in this episode are classified as "Auditory Bombardment," which means, these are ways to bombard your child's brain and ears with the correct pronunciation of R.  These strategies work at the speed of home-life and can be integrated easily into what you are already doing!

All the best to you!!

20 May 2024146 Think Your 1 Year Old Should Speak More? 5 Tips To Find Success00:11:26

Hey Friends~

Do you wonder how to get your little one to speak?

A dad asked me about his 1 year old, who is not saying words.  After observing his interaction with his family through mini videos he shared, I was able to show him how to tweak what he was already doing really well.  That little tweak helped the dad focus on what his child was saying through behavior.

It was right in front of his eyes!  But because his eyes were not tr

ained to SEE the opportunity for language expansion, he missed it.

He is like the many awesome fathers that are my clients. Once he knew, he jumped on board, knowing exactly how to make a difference for his child!  I know you will enjoy this story!

Always cheering you on!
