08 Feb 2022 | 4 Reasons New Members Won't Join | 00:13:08
Welcome back to the Joy of Membership Podcast! This episode is focusing on a frustrating topic when it comes to leading a membership: lack of new members. As a membership leader, you spend so much time trying to attract new members. When those efforts seem to fall flat, it is daunting. To help get you past those issues, I'm sharing four common reasons why potential members might be holding back on joining your membership.
**** ABOUT YOUR HOST Yes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership. Founder & CEO Joy Duling has been working with leaders of associations, trade groups and nonprofits since 2005. She has also walked the same journey, serving for nearly 10 years as the Executive Director of a membership-based nonprofit which she helped launch from scratch and led to annual revenues of more than $1M exclusively from membership contributions. Joy has been widely recognized as a speaker, an online educator and a trusted advisor, twice winning the “Unsung Hero Award” from the National Association of Women Business Owners' Central Illinois Chapter. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Social Work with Specialization in Policy, Planning and Administration. She has extensive experience in strategic planning, team facilitation, change management, and association operations. But beyond industry experience and education… Joy Duling is the calm voice you want to have in the room when you, your team, or your board is overwhelmed by ideas and options. She's a trusted resource at the other end of an email or phone call who knows the answer, or can find the answer, when it's not clear what to do next in your approach. And she's approachable and results-oriented, which makes it easy to shake loose of the old and start fresh on the new.

01 Mar 2022 | How to Create a New Member Orientation | 00:18:01
This week's Joy of Membership Podcast episode is a timely follow-up to last week's topic on Member Onboarding because I received a few questions. I thought it would make sense to go just a bit deeper into one specific tactic that you can include in the onboarding that you offer. That is, doing an actual member orientation. Now some organizations do orientations live, like they'll have new members come early to a meeting or they'll host an online orientation once a month, but I really love the idea of giving new members a specific space inside your members' area where they'll find exactly what they need to know to get started right. Think of it like a mini-course...and something that they can pop back into in the future if they need a refresher! **** ABOUT YOUR HOST Yes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership. 14 Sep 2022 | Want Membership Growth? Marketing Is Not the Answer | 00:09:03
As Fall approaches (here in the US), it's the time of year that many organizations turn their focus to member recruitment. Whether it's an annual membership drive, a member-to-member referral campaign, or a growth effort conducted alongside conference registration, it's typically all-hands on-deck to work toward growing the organization's membership for the new calendar year. When growth is the goal, the natural inclination is to lean into marketing. Where can we get the word out? What channels can we use to reach new people? Do we need to re-tune our messaging to attract new attention? Yet, the truth is that marketing, in the vast majority of cases, isn't actually what grows an organization.

If your hand is now raised, you are in good company. In fact, getting interested people to decide “yes” is something that challenges a lot of membership-based organizations. In this episode, I share 7 reasons why your prospective members might not be joining. Take a listen and see which ones might apply to your organization.

Today, I have a special guest with me. It’s been a while since we’ve had a guest episode, so I hope you enjoy this conversation with Aron Murch. Aron is the Co-Owner of 2H Media. Aron works with nonprofits in Ontario, focusing especially on building video-driven websites that reduce confusion and encourage engagement. He believes that you can increase your signups and improve member satisfaction by understanding what you members value… and that’s so true, isn’t it? Because he’s a marketing expert, you might assume that he’d be here talking about what you should be doing in your marketing, but we actually talked about what you should do BEFORE you ramp up your marketing. He clearly loves what he does and I think you’ll really enjoy this conversation. So let’s jump in…

This past week, Wild Apricot clients learned that a 25% price increase was coming to all pricing tiers in April. It's not unusual for companies to have to increase prices periodically, so this is to be expected. Yet, every time the price of technology goes up, boards start to wonder if they need to look around at what else is out there. If yours is feeling that urge, you'll likely be interested in this article that I first published back in January of 2022. It's just as relevant and timely this year. If you are a Wild Apricot customer who is beginning to look at options, I encourage you to add JourneyCARE to your list of possibilities. I did a demonstration on Friday specifically highlighting the similarities and differences between the two platforms.

06 Aug 2020 | Welcome to The Joy of Membership Podcast | 00:01:10
Most membership organizations -want- to be using best practices for membership growth and member care... but best practices are often easier said than done. There are practical realities that get in the way… too little time, not enough staff, a board that doesn't "get it", or even chapter leaders that go rogue. There’s no shortage of advice out there on best practices in membership. What WE need to talk about is how to actually make those things possible in the real world… how to be absolutely sure that growth practices are going to stick… how to make those things easier, more consistent, and even done automatically in many cases. So that’s what we talk about here, not just WHAT to do to grow membership, but HOW to actually make it all possible. If that sounds of interest, I'll be here most Tuesday mornings and I welcome you to join us.

I knew of the work that he did. I also knew that he had a book out for nonprofits. But I did not fully realize how innovative Matt’s approach was until I started looking more closely. In fact, Kevin Harrington who is known as the “inventor of the infomercial” and was the original Shark on Shark Tank says Matt George’s new book “Nonprofit Game Plan” is a game changer and he called Matt the “nonprofit CEO of our time.” So, obviously, I had to talk to Matt… and let you listen in on that conversation.

03 Sep 2020 | Helpful by the Numbers: JJ Reynolds, Mediauthentic | 00:16:34
This week, I’d like to introduce you to JJ Reynolds from Mediauthentic. JJ originally started working in the field of marketing as a videographer who would create marketing videos and other assets, but he quickly learned that organizations didn’t really know what to do with these things once they had them. That led him to dig into measurement, which he says is really what’s necessary to answer the question, “Is this actually working?” When you know what is and isn’t working (WITH REAL NUMBERS in front of you), it’s easier to take action in the right direction. Today, that’s what JJ focuses on - using metrics to help organizations guide their growth and value delivery.

10 Sep 2020 | Helpful with a Voice: American National CattleWomen | 00:19:38
I think it is fair to say that this week’s guest is the perfect example of an association leader whose work reflects a lifelong passion. Evelyn Green grew up on a farm in Alabama. Her family’s beef operation was in the largest beef-producing county for that state. Since 1982, she has been involved in the support and management of her family farm. She is married to a professor of Animal Sciences with a specialization in Beef Cattle Nutrition. She has served in every possible role for the Alabama Cattlewomen’s Association and today, she is President Elect for the American National Cattlewomen’s Association. She - and really every person that I’ve interacted with at ANCW - are incredibly passionate about the work, so I invited her here today to talk about how ANCW is being helpful to members and bring value to their industry. 17 Sep 2020 | Helpful in Shared Purpose: North Country Arts Council | 00:14:58
My next guest and I had a good laugh after we closed out our interview because she was totally singing my tune and we hadn’t even practiced! Anita Prather Harvell calls herself both an IT geek and an artist. Her artistic resume is extensive… playing woodwinds and percussion in local pit orchestras, singing with a chorus, performing theatrically on stage, and, teaching marching band and color guard across the country. She’s even married to a musician spouse. A love for the arts is in her blood. Connect with NCAC: **** INTERESTING IN DELIVERING *MAXIMUM* VALUE FOR YOUR MEMBERS? 24 Sep 2020 | Helpful with Sacred Cows: Dr. Stephan Meyer | 00:19:16
Have you ever heard the phrase “sacred cow”? In a business context, a sacred cow refers to an idea, custom, or belief that an organization resists questioning or criticizing. Sometimes holding onto such ideas without questioning them can hold an organization back from being able to create change that is necessary to survival. Today’s guest is Dr. Stephan Meyer who received his PhD last November for his research into sacred cows and organizations, but he’s actually been working on change-related projects in his career for more than 25 years. In a world now where every organization is trying to find a new path forward, it seemed like the perfect time for this conversation with Stephan. I hope you enjoy listening in. In our conversation, we specifically focused on the shift that is happening right now where more training is needing to happen in a virtual manner. If you’re like most organizations that are in this position, offering Continuing Education or other professional development, you’re probably concerned about making sure that the training is still effective even in a virtual format. Heather gave some great tips that I think you’re going to find super helpful. Now, here’s my conversation with Heather Burright. Part of the role of being a leader in a membership-based organization is ensuring that members experience a culture of acceptance and respect when engaging with us. Most of us want to be inclusive. We want to remove barriers that would make anyone feel unsafe or unheard. Yet, we know that our organizations exist within many systems where there can be problematic elements. Sometimes, we may even be blind to those problems ourselves. Reeshemah Davis is the founder and principal consultant of EMBOLDEN Action. Systems change is her area of expertise. Answering this question became the focus of her research on Irish immigration in both the US and Ireland. In 2015-2016, Deb was a Fulbright US Scholar to the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Castlebar, County Mayo, where she lectured and researched the lifeways and cultural practices of rural Irish-Catholics before they emigrated to the US. Recently, Deb became the Executive Director of the Register of Professional Archaeologists where she facilitates the certification and professional development of practicing archaeologists in the US and internationally.

In other words, does brand really matter? Ross Kimbarovsky is the founder and CEO of Crowdspring, a company where you can connect with more than 220,000 freelancers to get custom logo design, web design, graphic design, product design, and more. Basically, if you need something designed, you can probably find more than enough people over at Crowdspring who can do it. Crowdspring has some significant reach, working with big companies like Amazon, LG, Starbucks, Microsoft, Barilla, Phillips, but also tens of thousands of smaller organizations like non-profits, entrepreneurs, and startups. Before founding Crowdspring, Ross practiced law for 13 years as a successful trial attorney. But before you start thinking that he's all "no-nonsense attorney guy," some believe that Ross left law back in 2007 to start Crowdspring just so that he could wae shorts to work. Ross says that rumor is completely true. 19 Nov 2020 | Helpful in Rome: Jennifer Landini and Kate McElwee | 00:26:22
In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought of this episode’s featured organization often. Not only are they headquartered in Italy where the virus hit hard, but they also serve American women who live and work in Rome - women who were likely concerned for the situation in Italy, concerned for the situation back in the US, subject to travel restrictions, and trying to make sense of all of this, just as the entire rest of the world grappled with the changes, as well. I’m speaking, of course, about the American Women’s Association of Rome The good news is that AWAR had just gone through the process of upgrading their website and converting many of their outdated systems to be handled by the new site. That really worked out to be fortunate timing for them. In this conversation, I talk with AWAR’s president, Jennifer Landini, and their First Vice President Kate McElwee, about how AWAR has been serving members and creating value in such unusual circumstances.

This week’s guest is Amy Hager, a consultant who provides strategy and support for community-centric organizations. In our interview, you’ll hear her talk about what joy she finds in community building and providing guidance to a variety of organizations, helping them improve their internal strategies and external voice. Like many in the Association Industry, Amy didn't start her career in the space and instead says she kind of fell into it. When I did her interview, I didn’t realize that she was at one time both a racecar driver and a radio DJ, so I’m going to have to do a follow-up conversation with her sometime to learn more about that. What’s important for today is to know that Amy has found a common thread in all she has done over the years, and that is building a community. **** INTERESTED IN DELIVERING *MAXIMUM* VALUE FOR YOUR MEMBERS? This week’s guest is Elizabeth Pampalone from Absolute Marketing. Elizabeth is known as an international speaker, successful entrepreneur, and expert marketer with over 20 years of experience. In the time that I’ve personally been working with associations, trade groups, and membership-based nonprofits, I’ve met a lot of marketing consultants and, to be completely honest, most of them sound exactly the same… which is ironic considering that typically they are telling clients that they need to be identifiably different, isn’t it? Well, Elizabeth’s approach is actually different. She has boiled down the process of creating major components of marketing into a series of single-day events. It’s an approach that’s similar to the Facilitated Focus Days that I do on the consulting side of my business. I know that the approach can actually be very effective, so I invited her on the show to talk about how an expedited process can actually help you get your own marketing and nurture pieces out to your members more quickly. **** INTERESTED IN DELIVERING *MAXIMUM* VALUE FOR YOUR MEMBERS? 17 Dec 2020 | Helpful with Tech (Part 1): Alex Sirota | 00:30:01
On this week’s podcast, I’m introducing you to Alex Sirota from NewPath Consulting. One of the reasons why I like Alex so much is that, while he’s definitely a techy guy, he clearly tries to understand the needs of an organization and its members in order to be intentional about how tech can support those needs. It’s never technology just for technology’s sake. Alex has a BSc in computer science from the University of Michigan and has worked as a product manager at two Internet startups. He is a father of 2 and plays the trumpet for fun. In addition to his role as the founder of NewPath Consulting, he is also the founder and the president of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Toronto, so he understands what it is like to have to grow an organization that serves members. Alex is partnering with us on the next few episodes of this podcast, so you’ll be hearing several of his clients sharing their own stories over the next few weeks. For now, let’s dive into my conversation with Alex Sirota.

Michele Clancy is Marketing & Operations Manager at the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units. What is an Association of Intermediate Units? Michele will explain this week’s episode. She’ll also share how the work that she’s done to upgrade the technology systems that PAIU uses has helped the association better serve members. This episode is the second in the special 4-part content collaboration that I’m doing with Alex Sirota from NewPath Consulting. If you missed last week’s interview with Alex, be sure to hop back and take a listen as we talked all about what it takes to grow in the “Digital Age”. While Michele came into her role with her association from a marketing perspective, technology has become a very big part of what she needs in order to do her job really well. 30 Dec 2020 | Helpful with Tech (Part 3): Association of Canadian Archivists | 00:31:06
One of the things that I love about my job is the wide variety of organizations that I have the opportunity to work with and that I get to learn something new about their industries. This week, we’re hearing from Jo McCutcheon who is the Executive Director of the Association of Canadian Archivists. Jo has been with her association for a few years now, since 2017, and she was a perfect person to talk with as part of this special collaborative series that I’m doing with Alex Sirota, because the focus of her members in their jobs is all about how the right information is maintained, stored, protected, and easily accessed when necessary. So naturally, they’d probably expect that their professional association would prioritize the same. But doing so is sometimes easier said than done, but Jo has taken on that work, shifting the association into the digital age and positioning it not only for future growth, but also to serve members really well. I hope you enjoy this week’s conversation with Jo McCutcheon. executive.director@archivists.ca INTERESTED IN DELIVERING *MAXIMUM* VALUE FOR YOUR MEMBERS? 21 Jan 2021 | Helpful with Board Development (Part 2): TurnOUT/KidPower International | 00:34:04
This episode is the second in a collaborative series that I’m doing with Sean Kosofsky, known as the Nonprofit Fixer. We’re focused in on Board Development in preparation for a webinar that we’ll be co-hosting on the 29th of January. This week, you’re going to hear from two nonprofit leaders who have deliberately invested time into board development. Both are clients of Sean and they agreed to share their experiences here so that we can learn from their work. First up is Jack Beck. When he was just 16 years old, Jack was struggling with serious challenges as a queer young person and it was an LGBTQ+ nonprofit that stepped in with help, which made all the difference. Since then, he has dedicated his career to supporting organizations like the one that helped him. He began by working with community-based HIV organizations, and over the past 15 years, he has worked with grassroots queer groups all over the world. In 2015, he left his full-time job to start TurnOut, a nonprofit organization that focuses on connecting Bay Area volunteers with LGBTQ+ causes that can use their help. Our second interview for this episode is with Irene van der Zande. Irene has been dedicated to protecting children, teens, and adults, including those with special needs from abuse, bullying, assault, exploitation and other emotional and physical violence by empowering them with knowledge and skills. She is the Executive Director and Founder of Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International, a global nonprofit that has served over 6 million people of different ages, abilities, cultures, beliefs, and identities since 1989. 28 Jan 2021 | Helpful with Board Development (Part 3): National Queer Theater/Eviction Defense Collaborative | 00:29:31
I’m excited today to be able to share the third piece of our three-part series focusing on Board Development. If you’ve joined us for the previous episodes, you’ll know that this is a special collaboration that I’m producing with Sean Kosofsky who is commonly known as “The Nonprofit Fixer.” Like last week, you’re getting TWO interviews in this episode. Both organizations are clients of Sean’s that have been doing some terrific work in the area of board development. First up is Adam Odsess-Rubin. Adam is the Founder and Artistic Director of National Queer Theater. Originally from Berkeley, CA, he has worked as a director, actor, and teaching artist nationally with American Conservatory Theater, The Guthrie Theater, and New York Theatre Workshop. Adam graduated from New York University with a master's degree in Educational Theatre in 2018 and started National Queer Theater to advance liberation for queer communities through the arts. Then, you’ll hear from Martina Cucullu Lim. Martina is the Executive Director of the Eviction Defense Collaborative where she leads anti-displacement and homelessness prevention initiatives in the City and County of San Francisco. In fact, EDC has served as the lead agency for the design, implementation, and oversight of San Francisco's Tenant Right to Counsel System. In her role, Martina oversees the collaboration of nine legal services organizations providing full-scope legal representation to tenants at risk of eviction. Martina also advocates for the expansion of tenant rights and the preservation of housing equity and access to justice across San Francisco. 04 Feb 2021 | Helpful with a Podcast: IL Association of Medicaid Health Plans | 00:20:15
This week’s guest is one of my long-time clients, Samantha Olds Frey from the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans. As CEO of IAMHP, Samantha is a staunch advocate for her members. She is responsible for coordinating legislative strategies, testifying before legislative committees, and working closely with state agency administrators to formulate and implement policies that positively impact members. With all of that on her plate, Samantha has to intersect with a wide variety of stakeholders and she is constantly trying to find the best ways to connect the dots between everyone who needs to be abreast of the latest issues and understand the diversity of perspectives that are always present when you’re talking about healthcare policy. One of the newest strategies that Samantha is using is a podcast, which she sees as an important part of the association’s communication strategy, but also as a tool to enhance the association’s membership experience.

Of course, if you missed last week’s conversation with Abhay Khurana, the Chief Marketing Officer of Feathr, you’ll want to go back and give that a listen.

25 Feb 2021 | Helpful with Grant Writers: Holly Rustick | 00:26:38
Most of the time on this program, you’ve probably noticed that my guests are either someone who LEADS a membership…or someone who has a business or consulting practice that SUPPORTS membership leaders. I love it when I have a chance to talk with someone who actually does both because that’s actually what I did for more than a decade - I was the full-time Executive Director for a membership-based nonprofit, while also sharing my expertise as a consultant with my clients. In this conversation, you’re going to meet Holly Rustick, CEO of Grant Writing & Funding. Holly is someone who has extensive experience as a grant writer and reviewer. She is an Amazon bestselling author for her book, “The Beginner’s Guide to Grant Writing”, which is actually used as curriculum in universities across the US and she is the host of the top-ranked podcast, “Grant Writing & Funding”. But she also runs a membership community for grant writers where she has been very intentional about who she’s attracting as a member and what kind of experience she actually wants to provide. You’ll hear how even coming to those decisions was not an overnight thing, so if you’ve ever felt like it’s been hard to steer your ship into a clear direction, I think you’ll relate to Holly’s story.

09 Mar 2021 | Helpful with Chapters: Cecilia Sepp | 00:26:44
On the show this week, I’m chatting with Cecilia Sepp from Rogue Tulips Nonprofit Consulting & Association Management Services. Cecilia has spent her entire career in the nonprofit arena - in association staff positions, as a high-level consultant, and volunteer. If you are currently working with an organization that has chapters, or perhaps you lead a chapter, you’re going to find this conversation especially intriguing. Cecilia makes the point that we’ve largely been doing things the same for decades in chapter management and it might just be time to break away and try something new.

18 Mar 2021 | Helpful with Copywriting: Alyson Lex | 00:23:41
This week, I’d like to introduce you to a new friend of mine, Alyson Lex. Alyson is a conversion copywriter which basically means that she writes words that are intended to sell. She’s been doing this sort of copywriting for more than 13 years. From landing pages, to sales pages, to emails, to direct mail, Alyson has done it all… and lots of it. But the thing that I like most about Alyson is that truly believes in understanding what members want and then crafting the right language to show them that they should take this journey with you.

25 Mar 2021 | Helpful with Expanding to National: Brian Fried | 00:25:01
Do you ever watch an episode of Shark Tank and wonder how the heck someone who seems just like a regular person came up with some random idea for a product, and then was able to figure out how to do all the things that are necessary to get the thing designed, to navigate patents, to find manufacturers, etc? I definitely do! If that person was lucky, they know someone like this week’s guest. Brian Fried is a serial inventor who has brought many of his inventions to the mass retail market. “As seen on TV”? Brian’s been there. Home Shopping Channels? Yep, been there, too. Catalogs and online websites? You betcha. But that’s not today’s story. Today’s conversation is about the work that Brian has been doing to take local inventor groups and turn them into a national model. I want you to notice how attuned he has been to 2 things: 1) understanding exactly what his members need from the Club; and 2) leveraging strategic partnerships to create win-win situations. These two things can make a huge difference in whether your member experience will attract members quickly, get them to engage enthusiastically, and keep them coming back for more.

15 Apr 2021 | Helpful with Creating Safe Spaces: Kid Power/Teen Power/Full Power International | 00:22:41
Irene van der Zande is back again on this week’s show. You may remember Irene from a conversation that we had here on the podcast back in January. Irene is the Executive Director and Founder of Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International, a global nonprofit leader that has served over 6 million people of different ages, abilities, cultures, and beliefs, identities through providing safety training and educational resources since 1989. Irene has spent the past 3 decades protecting children, teens, and adults, including those with special needs, from abuse, bullying, assault, exploitation, and other emotional or physical violence by empowering them with knowledge and skills. These are topics that we’d certainly hope that we wouldn’t have to deal with in our membership organizations, but setting boundaries and creating safe spaces for our people comes with the job of leadership. **** ABOUT YOUR HOST Yes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership. This week’s guest will always hold a very special place in my heart not only because she’s just a true gem of a human being, but also because her organization, The Foot and Nail Institute, was the very first organization to go live on the JourneyCARE platform. As a nurse, Heather has always had an affection for helping others. She combined her passion for nursing to help the aging population with her 1st company Everyday Divinity by delivering routine foot care services to seniors. Now she is building a community of nurses who help seniors in the same way - by starting and growing their own foot care businesses. Using JourneyCARE, Heather has been able to automate many of the processes that she needs to successfully run her membership and warmly engage those she aims to attract. **** ABOUT YOUR HOST Yes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership. Did you know that May 7th-16th is National Public Gardens Week? I didn’t until recently. This week’s podcast guest knew, of course. Joan Lucchese is the Executive Director of The Gardens at Heather Farm, a nonprofit organization that operates a free public garden, education center, and special event venue on six picturesque acres in Walnut Creek, CA. Joan has been supporting non-profit missions for over 30 years as a volunteer, board member, and executive director. She says that having a passion for the environment and a life-long love of gardening makes coming to work each day a pleasure. Joan also believes public gardens play an important role in lifting the spirits of visitors and healing the community. We’ll talk about how Joan has worked toward building The Gardens membership program in this conversation.

20 May 2021 | Helpful through Biking: Bike Pittsburgh | 00:19:44
When I was a kid, riding my bicycle up and down my block was one of my favorite things to do. We had a little creek at the end of the street that served as a gathering spot for all of the neighborhood kids… I guess it was a little like gathering around the water cooler that adults do in the workplace. From our bikes, we’d swap stories, make up games, and just be kids. I haven’t really thought much about biking as an adult. It’s just not part of my life nowadays. However, that’s not true for this week’s guest. Sarah Quinn is Membership & Outreach Manager at BikePGH, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to making Pittsburgh's streets safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. As someone who didn't own a car until she was 25, Sarah understands the need for equitable transportation options. She was drawn to BikePGH's mission - to make biking and walking commonplace for all Pittsburghers - so that ultimately all neighbors can access the things they need without needing to own a car.

27 May 2021 | Helpful with Sales: Nikki Rausch | 00:20:53
I have to admit that I was a bit of a fangirl on this week’s episode and you will no doubt pick up on that as you listen. If you were to ask me who the #1 person is that I listen to in order to improve my own skills around selling, it’s this week’s guest, Nikki Rausch. I’ve listened to every podcast episode, I’ve read her books, and I’m a member of her membership program, The Sales Maven Society. As CEO of Sales Maven, an organization dedicated to authentic selling, Nikki has the unique ability to transform the misunderstood process of selling into something that not only feels better, but also gets better results. Nikki herself has shattered sales records in many industries, receiving multiple top producer awards and has experience selling to such prestigious organizations as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Hewlett-Packard, and NASA. But she’s also been a board member for an organization where she’s had to sell sponsorship and she knows what it’s like to sell membership in her own business, as well as for the clients she serves. Nikki’s work has truly been transformational for me and I know you’re going to love her warmth, approachability, and expertise as well.

Having Jeanette on the show this week is especially timely given that June 14th is World Blood Donor Day, a recognition day that is obviously of very special importance to Jeanette personally, but also for her member organizations that are involved in life-saving work all year long. This week’s guest is Kevin Earhart Sutton. Kevin is the National Office Administrator for the Wilderness Education Association. When I asked Kevin to send me a quick bio for this intro, do you know what he put first in the very first line? That in life, he’s the full-time parent to a two-year-old and that they go on a lot of bike rides to local parks. I love that about him. For most of us, myself included, a little snippet about our family gets tagged on as the last sentence after we talk about everything that we do professionally. At WEA, Kevin is involved in just about everything: managing the website, taking care of members and member relations, managing the finances, streamlining programming - the list goes on and on. He says that the work seems to involve making a lot of spreadsheets, but he’s pretty good at it so he really doesn’t mind. 15 Jul 2021 | Helpful ‘Round the Track’: Kentucky Derby Museum | 00:19:14
You might want to don your finest wide-brimmed, Southern belle hat for this week’s episode. That’s because my guest this week is joining us from the Kentucky Derby Museum. Yep, the museum that focuses on one of the most legendary race tracks in the world. Rachel Collier Carr is Director of Communications for the museum, serving as their primary media spokesperson, coordinating press conferences, media requests, public relations, and all the content from social media to newsletters. One of the funding streams for the museum is its membership, something that the museum’s team has spent lots of time thinking about lately. Rachel joins us to talk about that, along with all the exciting things that happen at what sounds like a very fun but also very busy place to work! **** ABOUT YOUR HOST Yes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership. 29 Jul 2021 | Helpful with Strategic Content: Leona Dalavai Scott | 00:29:46
I am so excited to introduce you to Leona Dalavai Scott. She is a content creator, founder and president of JEP Marketing Communications in North Texas. Having worked for professional and trade associations for most of her professional career, she is committed to using content as a way to build membership value to attract, convert and retain members and customers. She recently published The C.O.N.T.E.N.T. Solution, a step-by-step workbook on how to use content to drive membership through goal setting and planning. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters in Texas. Her favorite hobbies include cooking Indian food (yum!), cruising the bike trails in her neighborhood, and reading. The thing that I absolutely love about Leona is that in our talk, it wasn't just about content being important, but actually how to make it easy to do, and that's really important for organizations that are juggling a lot of balls and needing to find ways to do things that don't take a lot of time, energy, and staff resources. In fact, download Leona's free five-sequence "plug and play" templates to help you convert more prospects into new members here: https://bit.ly/conversioncontent. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Leona! **** ABOUT YOUR HOST Yes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership.
