Episode 285 - You May Not Want Another Job — You May Want Your Own Business

One of the most interesting shifts post-COVID is the increase in the number of professionals choosing small businesses over large institutions. Many are seeking more autonomy, flexible work arrangements, less bureaucracy, quicker decision-making, and the satisfaction of building something tangible. TJ notes that while corporate skills like management and communication are incredibly valuable, small business operations demand flexibility, problem-solving, and comfort with ambiguity.

It’s also true that more professionals today are seeking purposeful careers that allow them to apply their skills in more entrepreneurial environments. As corporate professionals rethink what success means to them, many are finding new energy in small business ventures, whether by starting something of their own or joining a growing company.

In this episode of The Job Hunting Podcast, I interviewed TJ Slattery, founder of Crow's Nest Consulting. With a background that includes founding a brewery and advising small business owners across the U.S., TJ shares a wealth of insights for professionals looking to transition from corporate life to the small business world.

02 Dec 2024Job Market Crisis? (Ep 267)00:52:32

Episode 267 - 2024 Was the Toughest Year for Job Seekers and Recruiters in Decades – with Geoff Slade

As a career coach, I’ve spent years guiding corporate professionals through the ups and downs of job searching, but 2024 is proving to be one of the most challenging years I’ve ever witnessed. During a recent conversation with Geoff Slade, a recruitment veteran with over five decades of experience, it became clear that this is not just another cyclical dip in the market. This year feels unprecedented in both its difficulty and unpredictability.

What we’re seeing is a job market that’s simultaneously contracting in certain sectors while shifting toward new priorities in others. Job ads are down 13% overall, with the ICT sector seeing a shocking 23% decline. Banking, traditionally a stalwart in corporate hiring, is also feeling the pinch. So where does this leave the corporate professionals I work with—those in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, who have always been able to rely on their expertise and experience to secure their next role? Unfortunately, many of them are finding that the old rules no longer apply.

How to Successfully Change Careers Later in Life

As life expectancy increases and people stay healthier longer, the concept of a single, lifelong career is becoming outdated. More professionals are embracing the idea of changing careers later in life, seeking fulfillment and new challenges as they age. This trend is not just a fleeting notion but a significant shift in how we approach our professional lives. According to the American Institute for Economic Research, there are between one and two million older career changers each year, showing that this phenomenon is more common than ever (Psychology Today).

13 May 2024Alone in the Job Hunt (Ep 238)00:35:05

This podcast episode addresses the issue of loneliness during the job search journey and provides valuable insights and strategies for overcoming it. It acknowledges that job hunting can often feel isolating, especially when one feels disconnected from the working world or lacks support from friends and family who may not understand the challenges of the process.

I describe various aspects of loneliness, including its prevalence across different demographics, its impact on mental and physical health, and its correlation with unemployment. I highlight research findings that emphasize the need for comprehensive strategies to support individuals during their job search, addressing both practical aspects and emotional well-being.

Many professionals experience unemployment but feel hesitant to discuss it openly. Thus, the loneliness of being between jobs is exacerbated. In this article, I summarize the episode, shedding light on the challenges of job search loneliness and offering insights, research findings, and practical strategies for overcoming them.

23 Dec 2024Mastering Job Interviews (Ep 270)00:32:28

Episode 270 - Six Unexpected Strategies to Stand Out on Your Next Job Interview

This is a rebroadcast of Episode 83.

Are you ready for your next job interview?

Most people would prepare for the interview by practicing answers to questions, and that's, of course, really important. However, researching the possible questions and the proper answers for those questions can be a rabbit hole and surely not the only success factor in helping you nail the interview and get the job.

Many job seekers feel anxious while constantly anticipating the day of the interview. The interview comes and goes in a blur, and although you answered all the questions, you can't help but feel that things didn't go well. But then, you don't hear back for a long time, and because these days it's very hard to get feedback, you don’t know what went wrong.

Could this be you?

Preparing answers for questions is great, but there are other things that you can prepare for, which also affect the outcome of the interview. Unfortunately, many people overlook preparing for these other dimensions of your presentation, which the panel is also assessing.

In this new episode of The Job Hunting Podcast, I share six dimensions you need to prepare to showcase executive presence during a job interview.

Episode 268 - Career Transitions: A Guide for Corporate Professionals Seeking Change

The end of the year often sparks reflection. For corporate professionals, it’s a time to assess the past 12 months, consider new directions, and perhaps make big decisions about the future. This year, those reflections feel more urgent. Economic uncertainty, shifting workplace norms, and the relentless pace of technological change have left many seasoned professionals questioning their career paths.

The idea of a career transition is nothing new. But what feels different in 2024 is the sheer complexity of it. For years, career advice was dominated by stories of bold leaps—dramatic pivots into entirely new industries or ventures. These tales are inspiring but rarely reflect the nuanced challenges that mid- and senior-level professionals face. Transitioning isn’t about abandoning everything you’ve built; it’s about rethinking how your experience, skills, and passions align with the opportunities of tomorrow.

12 Aug 2024Career Crisis Management (Ep 251)00:48:10

Recent incidents involving leadership communication failures, such as the global IT disruption caused by CrowdStrike and the mishandling of security by the U.S. Secret Service, offer valuable lessons for corporate professionals on the importance of crisis communication.

In July 2024, CrowdStrike—a leading cybersecurity firm—released a faulty software update that triggered widespread system crashes on Windows devices globally. This incident disrupted vital sectors including healthcare, finance, and transportation, leading to significant operational chaos. Despite the technical nature of the issue, CrowdStrike's leadership struggled to effectively communicate the situation, which amplified public concern and shook confidence in the company's ability to manage crises.

Similarly, the U.S. Secret Service faced severe criticism following their response to a security breach in July 2024 during a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump. The mishandling of communication in the aftermath, coupled with delayed and unclear public statements, eroded trust and led to calls for leadership changes within the agency.

These examples underscore the critical need for leaders to be prepared with clear, empathetic, and confident communication strategies during crises. Whether it's handling the pressure of a job interview or navigating a major organizational crisis, the ability to communicate effectively during tough times is a skill that can set you apart as a leader. This blog will explore essential strategies for mastering crisis communication, helping you advance your career and make informed decisions during critical moments.

Episode 263 - Finding the Right Job and Building a Personal Brand

Professionals face an ever-growing set of challenges as they navigate career transitions, seek advancement, or re-enter the workforce. Finding the right position and standing out as a candidate can be challenging, even for experienced professionals.

Recently, I had a conversation with Russell Ayles, a recruitment expert with nearly two decades in the industry, specializing in retail, fashion, and e-commerce. Our discussion shed light on themes that resonate deeply with the corporate professionals I coach. These include the importance of transparency in the hiring process, the value of personal branding, and a rising emphasis on ethics in recruitment practices. As we discussed these topics, I couldn’t help but reflect on how they connect to broader trends shaping the current employment landscape.

21 Apr 2025Why Hiring Feels Broken00:48:44

Episode 287 - Hiring Makes No Sense Anymore: Why Recruitment and Hiring Feel Like a Burden and How Leaders Can Fix Them

Hiring has become a dreaded task for many managers. It feels like a burden rather than an opportunity, especially when organizations are under pressure to restructure, meet operational targets, or operate with reduced budgets. In this of The Job Hunting Podcast (287), I’m sharing part one of a two-part conversation originally recorded for the Lead to Soar podcast, where I was interviewed by Michelle Redfern. Michelle and I explore the realities of hiring from the leader's perspective, especially in the current climate of economic volatility and organizational change. We discuss what makes hiring feel heavy and bureaucratic, and how we can shift the experience to make it more strategic and rewarding. Whether you’re a hiring manager or a job seeker, understanding both sides of the recruitment process is crucial.

Episode 284 - This Ain’t Your First Recession: How to Navigate Today’s Job Market Like a Pro

Inflation is slowing. Interest rates remain high. Companies are hiring, but cautiously. For experienced professionals, that mix translates into fewer job openings, more competition, and longer wait times. Meanwhile, the jobs that do exist are being filled differently. Some never even reach job boards.

This blog summarizes Episode 284 of The Job Hunting Podcast, in which I discuss the biggest challenges facing mid- to senior-level professionals and offer a strategy playbook for overcoming them. 16 Sep 2024Key Strategies to Stand Out (Ep 256)00:52:29

The job market in 2024 remains complex and competitive, especially for experienced professionals. Whether you’re in the US or Australia, senior-level roles are becoming harder to land, and even seasoned executives find themselves in uncharted territory.

In the US, the labor market has shown signs of slowing growth. While the unemployment rate has remained relatively low, many companies are opting for cautious hiring practices, particularly for higher-level positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, sectors such as finance and technology have seen a reduction in the number of open executive roles as organizations focus on cost-saving measures and operational efficiencies.

Australia faces similar challenges. Experienced professionals are navigating a job market that is still feeling the effects of recent economic shifts. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that while job vacancies remain, many organizations are tightening budgets, particularly for senior management and leadership positions. As companies restructure or downsize, professionals with decades of experience are increasingly finding themselves in a crowded job market, vying for fewer opportunities.

In this environment, many seasoned professionals are asking, “How do I stand out?” As a career coach specializing in job searching and career advancement for experienced professionals, I’ve heard this question countless times. Having coached executives, managers, and directors navigating these uncertain times, I’ve come to understand the specific challenges they face. In my latest podcast episode, I answer the most common and pressing questions from corporate professionals and offer actionable advice to help them regain control of their job search and career trajectory.

26 Aug 2024Winning Resumes? Keep It Simple (Ep 253)00:56:34

In today’s hyper-competitive job market, your resume is your personal marketing tool. Therefore, choosing a good template is quite a challenge for many professionals. Especially due to the fact that the first "thing" looking at your resume most often is a bot, not the human eye. Most employers now rely on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to sift through countless resumes, which means the template you choose can significantly impact whether or not your application ever gets seen by human eyes.

As a career coach with years of experience helping professionals apply for jobs and advance their careers, I’ve encountered countless resumes that looked great on the surface but were fundamentally flawed in terms of ATS compatibility. To investigate whether freely available resume templates are up to the task, I conducted an in-depth analysis of some of the most popular sources for free resume templates online. The results were enlightening—and in some cases, alarming.

Episode 286 - If You're Not Showing Up on LinkedIn, You’re Invisible: How Job Hunting Has Changed for Professionals Over 40

Experienced corporate professionals over 40 face a paradox: they bring extensive expertise, leadership, and resilience, yet they often confront hiring biases. If you’re over 40 and navigating a career change, know this: You don’t need to reinvent yourself. You just need to reposition. You’ve built a career. Let’s make sure it continues to serve you.

Here’s what I want you to remember:

  • Your age and experience are assets.
  • A strong resume and LinkedIn profile work together.
  • Telling the right story matters more than sounding impressive.
  • A focused, intentional search beats mass applications.
  • Reconnection is more powerful than cold outreach.

This episode (286) is part 2 of my discussion on how to use age as your advantage to help mid-to-senior level professionals navigate career transitions confidently and effectively. The first part is episode 284, in which I analyze the current job market and discuss how to leverage it rather than see it as a barrier to entry.

06 May 2024I Interviewed ChatGPT. Again! (Ep 237)00:50:18

We discuss how professionals can leverage AI to optimize their job applications, tailor their resumes, and stay updated with industry trends. ChatGPT shares insights on how it can assist in drafting compelling cover letters, preparing for interviews, and even planning career paths. We also tackle the big question—will AI replace career coaches, or does it simply augment our roles and allow us to focus on what we love most about our jobs?

Episode 283 - How to Succeed Without the Perfect Boss

Traditional models of leadership have focused on influence over others: inspiring teams, delegating tasks, setting strategic direction. But the definition of leadership is expanding to include how we influence and guide ourselves. Self-leadership is about setting our own direction, managing our mindset, and taking proactive ownership of our careers.

We are witnessing a pivotal shift in how work is experienced and how careers are built, especially in the corporate sector. With mass layoffs making headlines and a growing number of organizations calling employees back to the office, professionals are facing unprecedented uncertainty. For many, the promise of purposeful work seems to conflict with the rigidity and pressure of corporate environments. Yet amid these complexities, there is a powerful idea gaining traction: self-leadership.

In this episode of The Job Hunting Podcast (283), I spoke with Elizabeth Lotardo, a leadership consultant, author, and educator who has worked with companies like Salesforce and Hilton. Her book, Leading Yourself: Finding More Joy, Meaning and Opportunities in the Job You Already Have, and her expertise in employee engagement offer timely and practical guidance for navigating today’s volatile job market. Elizabeth traced the origins of the self-leadership concept to ancient philosophy, yet emphasized that it is now finding new relevance in the corporate world. In 2017, she pioneered the first LinkedIn Learning course on the topic, and interest surged during the pandemic as remote work made self-direction a professional necessity. Her insight is especially relevant now as many organizations reduce headcount, restructure teams, and withdraw flexibility.

23 Sep 2024Career Coaching vs Career Counseling: Understanding the Key Differences (Ep 257)00:29:27

Since the pandemic, corporate professionals across the globe have been reassessing their career goals, purpose, and interests. Many are no longer content with simply climbing the corporate ladder; instead, they are seeking roles that align with their values, provide fulfillment, and offer flexibility. In both the US and Australia, professionals are changing industries, pursuing career pivots, and prioritizing work-life balance more than ever before.

A recent survey by McKinsey revealed that over 40% of employees are considering leaving their jobs in search of better opportunities that reflect their new priorities. Similarly, research from PwC Australia shows that a significant number of professionals—especially those in their 40s and 50s—are actively seeking career changes, with many citing the pandemic as a catalyst for reevaluating what matters most to them.

As a career coach, I work with corporate professionals who are not only looking for job advancement but are also asking deeper questions about what they truly want out of their careers. In this article, I’ll explore the most pressing concerns job seekers face today and share insights I’ve gained from working with professionals navigating these transitions.

How to Find Career Clarity When You're Feeling Stuck

As a career coach, I often work with professionals who, despite having decades of experience, find themselves uncertain about their career direction. They’ve climbed the corporate ladder, led teams, and made significant contributions to their organizations—but now, they feel stuck. Many of them come to me not because they lack experience or skills, but because they no longer know what they want to achieve next. This is an increasingly common challenge among experienced corporate professionals, and I believe it’s crucial to address this issue with a structured, thoughtful approach.

Episode 265 - The Challenges and Rewards of Transitioning from Corporate to Nonprofit Leadership

As I reflect on my latest podcast interview with Nick Grono, CEO of The Freedom Fund, I am struck by the growing interest among corporate professionals to pivot into nonprofit leadership. It's a topic I often discuss with my clients—seasoned executives who, after years of building a career defined by financial success, now seek purpose and fulfillment. This desire for purpose has never been stronger, as we navigate an economic landscape where layoffs and corporate restructuring are leaving professionals questioning the sustainability of their paths.

But making the switch from corporate to nonprofit leadership isn’t as straightforward as some might think. As Nick and I discussed how the nonprofit sector operates with different rules, mindsets, and measures of success. And for those accustomed to traditional corporate roles, understanding these differences is crucial to making a successful transition.

Episode 281 - Pessimism is Fashionable but Optimism Wins: Why Positivity is Your Career’s Greatest Asset

There has never been a more crucial time for optimism in the corporate job market. As layoffs continue in various industries, economic uncertainties loom, and AI-driven changes disrupt traditional career paths, job seekers are navigating an increasingly complex landscape. In this article, I argue that a strategic, optimistic mindset is essential for professionals looking to advance their careers or land new roles.

In my recent conversation with Victor Perton, Chief Optimism Officer at the Center for Optimism, we explored how optimism shapes leadership, career growth, and resilience. The discussion reinforced a fundamental truth I’ve observed as a career coach: those who cultivate a positive outlook consistently outperform their peers in job searches, interviews, and long-term career progression.

25 Nov 2024Rest as a Career Strategy (Ep 266)00:43:14

Episode 266 - The Career-Building Power of Rest in a Burnout Economy

In the relentless grind of today’s professional world, “hustle culture” reigns supreme. For corporate professionals, especially those navigating job searches or career transitions, this often means working tirelessly to stay relevant and competitive. Yet, despite all the energy poured into applications, networking, and interview preparation, the results often fall short.

The problem? We’ve misunderstood the value of rest.

As a career coach working with corporate professionals for years, I’ve seen a troubling trend. High-achieving individuals—many of them seasoned executives—are burning themselves out during what should be a time of reinvention and opportunity. Rest, the cornerstone of resilience and creativity, has become the most overlooked aspect of their strategy.

And the consequences are stark: poorer decisions, missed opportunities, and, perhaps most damaging of all, the erosion of their confidence.

In a labor market as competitive as today’s, where layoffs remain frequent and economic uncertainty looms, it’s time we reconsider how we approach rest—not as a retreat from ambition, but as its fuel.

22 Feb 20215 Myths Sabotaging Your Job Hunting and Career (Ep 70)00:42:06

There are many misconceptions about job hunting and how to advance your career. For 5 weeks between January and February this year (2021), I was on my Facebook Page every Wednesday doing live and free coaching sessions, busting one myth per week for five weeks. This was a fun project for me, and at the time of writing (22 February 2021), over 4000 have watched these videos*.

We then compiled the best of each of the five sessions and made this episode of The Job Hunting Podcast.

15 Sep 2020Well-Being, Digital Health, and Startup Jobs - With Startup Entrepreneur Alex Naoumidis (Ep 47)00:44:59

Alex Naoumidis is the CEO of Mindset Health, a startup he founded with his brother Chris in Melbourne Australia. It now has 2 apps on the market: Mindset (for mental health) and Nerva (for irritable bowel syndrome, which is often triggered by stress and anxiety), but its ambitions are much higher.

Mindset Health is a company brand with the vision of managing multiple products addressing chronic conditions with app-based hypnotherapy. Since it’s inception in 2018, Mindset has been building a loyal following of fans, like yours truly, has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Tech Crunch, and other news outlets, interested in their digital health innovation and hypnotherapy programs. It has also attracted the interest of investors: In May this year, the startup announced it had raised $1.1 million in funding from investors across the U.S. and Australia.

The first half of our conversation was about the startup world: how Alex landed in the world of innovation and entrepreneurialism, about working in startups and building a team of diverse professionals. Then we focused on wellbeing in 2020, what/how and if COVID has influenced Mindset’s next steps and growth, and what Alex can tell us to help us perform at our best during the lockdown.

This episode was the first-ever episode of The Job Hunting Podcast recorded LIVE with an audience. It was one of four special episodes designed to be part of the Victorian 2020 Digital Innovation Festival, or #DIF2020. DIF is an initiative of the Department of Jobs, Precincts, and Regions. In Melbourne, we are very proud of our innovation precincts, especially when it comes to health innovation. And Mindset is on a league of its own.

07 Sep 2020LinkedIn Q&A from The Job Hunting Podcast (Ep 46)00:51:03

In August 2020, I delivered a presentation for over 100 senior executives on how to use LinkedIn more efficiently. The goal was to give these busy corporate leaders, a set of ideas and tools so that they can spend a minimal amount of time on the platform, and still have a LinkedIn presence that's punchy and interesting. So if that is you - that is if you also want to have that visibility, but you don't want, or don't have the time, to spend a lot of time on LinkedIn - Then this podcast episode is for you.

The idea is to maximize opportunities and visibility: your LinkedIn profile and activity should position you as you want to be perceived professionally in the job market. This should be the ultimate goal.

The organizers received more questions that day then we had the time to answer. So I'm using this podcast episode to address all the questions that we received, and answer them to the best of my ability, considering I'm not a big fan of "one size fits all approach" and believe we should all be looking at finding what is distinctive about our capabilities and skills, and not copy what everyone else is doing on LinkedIn.

If you are fairly new to LinkedIn, I would recommend that you start our LinkedIn journey together by first listening to Episode 34 - How to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out.Then come back to this episode and listen to the LinkedIn Q&A. However, if you are familiar with LinkedIn and an active user of the platform, you can go ahead and listen to the Q&A, no problem!

I also recommend that you download my LinkedIn Checklist: it will help you get started on LinkedIn or do a quick review on your profile.

I'd also love to hear your feedback and opinions. As I mentioned above, I'm not a big fan of the 'one size fits all approach to LinkedIn", so I'd love to hear what has been working for you on LinkedIn. When I'm doing LinkedIn Audits or working one-on-one with my coaching clients I can tailor my recommendations to suit their needs. I love doing this, it's really exciting to position professionals for success. And I see it works for them!

And if you are listening to this episode a few months down the track, it's likely I few things may have changed on the platform. So keep that in mind, be smart, and adapt to make sure you are on top of the new trends and tools on LinkedIn. If you want my advice ongoing, join my The Job Hunting Podcast Private Group on Facebook and ask me a question in there. That's where I hang out the most and do my Live Coaching Sessions regularly.

09 Nov 2020From City Life to Tropical Paradise: A Positive Redundancy Story Update with Alistair Freeman (Ep 55)00:34:05

In November 2019, a podcast listener contacted me to say Alistair Freeman had written a very personal account on LinkedIn about his experience being made redundant, looking for work, tapping on his network, going through recruitment and selection, and ultimately finding a new job. At the time, those real and vulnerable personal stories of redundancies were nowhere to be found. After reading his post, I messaged him and invited Alistair to expand on his experience a bit more as a guest of this podcast. That episode is number 8. Positive Redundancy: Interview with Alistair Freeman.

Since then, a lot has changed! I really enjoyed my chat with Alistair and had penciled in my calendar that it would be great to catch up with him again in 12 months. Considering Alistair made a sector change and a seachange, I am really grateful that he agreed to the second interview: these are two ideas that are very trendy at the moment with professionals impacted by the pandemic.

13 Jun 2022How to Work Online, Remain Productive, and Connect with People (Ep 138)00:24:57

I am always giving my clients tips on how to work online. Here are the key complaints I hear from clients and friends:

  • It's hard to connect with people
  • It's hard to keep productive
  • It's lonely, and
  • There's a tendency to work too much

But, working online is now the main aspect of white-collar working life. Many office workers who, pre-pandemic, had to commute to work now can work remotely. Even if they go back to the office, you may find it empty, and most of the work you do is still in front of the computer anyway. So for transitional office-based companies, virtual companies, working for yourself, or job hunting, I hope you will find these tips helpful.

06 Jul 2020The Missing 33%: The CEO Confidant Improving Diversity and Inclusion in Corporate Australia - with Michelle Redfern (Ep 37)01:06:06

Before I met Michelle Redfern, I had heard a lot about her from my friend and colleague Div Pillay, the Co-Founder of MindTribes, a diversity and inclusion consultancy. At MindTribes I’m the head of market strategy and Michelle is Div’s partner in MindTribes’ nonprofit arm, CDW (Culturally Diverse Women and Workforce). Although we are both involved, we work on different projects and our paths don’t cross very often. Div always has wonderful things to say about Michelle, so I always wanted to know her better. Michelle is an in-demand speaker and a regular contributor to the discussion about equality and inclusion in sport and business. So it was with great pleasure and gratitude that I got to know her better during this interview for The Job Hunting Podcast.

Michelle is the founder of Advancing Women in Business & Sport, an enterprise providing research and advisory services on equality, inclusion, and gender diversity. She works closely with some of the most influential CEOs and leaders in the country, supporting their organization's design and implement diversity and inclusion strategies that work.

14 Mar 2022Stop Praising Hard Work: 5 Strategies to Get You Out of the “Rat-Race” (Ep 125)00:15:09

It is now easier than ever before to work harder, for longer hours, every day, from anywhere, and at any time. We check our phones constantly. We answer calls when we are driving, walking, cooking. Keeping up with work is a “rat race” and a real trap. We work so hard, and yet we lose focus of our dreams and our values.

It’s too easy to stay locked into hard work mode. Hard work is praised in almost every culture. It is also how we introduce ourselves to others. "How have you been?". "Super busy, working a lot, but fine!" It’s how we start conversations and know we believe that we add value to the world. It’s through hard work.

But is it a solution to your career problems? I don't think it is.

Listen to this episode of The Job Hunting podcast and find out a few of my strategies to get you out of the "rat race" and moving forward in your career.

About the host, Renata Bernarde

Hello, I'm Renata Bernarde, the Host of

16 Jan 2020Creating Good Habits for Career Success: 7 “Must Do” Actions for Job Hunter (Ep 14)00:32:27

In this episode, I focus on 7 habits you must create not only to help you find your next job, but also for you to have great confidence and success in your career. Together with episodes 12 and 13, this episode is a companion to my 31 Days of Actions to Reset your Career, a project I’ve created to help professionals make the most out of this month of January and take 1 day at a time in creating new habits and taking actions that will have an positive effect in their career advancement and job hunting prospects. This can be used throughout your career, year, it’s not a January-only strategy. It’s really an opportunity for you to press the reset button whenever you feel ready, and incorporate these actions in your life. At least give them a try! If you want to follow the 2nd half of the project day by day, follow me on Instagram, Facebook or my Company LinkedIn page.

1. Go for a 30-minute walk before or after work

  • It resets your mind: if you’ve been sitting all day or will be sitting all day, you need a breather.
  • It gives you the opportunity to rest from work and worries: listen to your fun podcast (see my post for Day 8!) or music, or call your friend, or meditate.
  • It gives you the opportunity to review your plans and make new ones: listen to your sector or professional development podcast (again, see post from Day 8!), think about your achievements for the day, or what you plan to do today.

2. Post an article on LinkedIn aligned to your expertise.

If you are following the 31 Days of Actions to Reset Your Career, you are now ready to start networking online, and sharing some knowledge with your network. You have a it all together. Don't be reluctant to start posting on LinkedIn, it is a really great way to get noticed by people who can directly hire you, or can advocate for you. So find a great article you have read recently - about your sector, professional interest – and share on LinkedIn:

  • Add your own words: a couple of sentences to explain why this article is a great read;
  • Add some hashtags to make your post reach out to those who are interested in the topic – LinkedIn is great at providing you with hashtags. 2 or 3 is all you need.
  • Watch out for comments: if someone comments, you reply back. Don’t leave them hanging. This is about establishing new connections.
  • And if no one comments, don’t feel bad! Establish a routine of posting every week, and you will learn how to establish better connections, and your network will understand the shift and start engaging more over time.

3. Connect with all your professional connections on LinkedIn

We are in constant transition and having to re-think how we actually keep tabs with technology and what is the simplest possible way to do things these days. So if there are important connections sitting in your contacts, which you are not yet linked to on LinkedIn, use this upcoming weekend to send them a connection invitation.

4. Envision what your career might be like. Write it down.

Writing down your goals and dreams is really important:

  • It helps clarify your dreams, what you want to achieve.
  • It motivates you to take action.
  • Doing this “brain dump” exercise will clear your head; clear all the noise and confusion your thoughts have a tendency to create, especially on a Sunday evening!
  • You will start your week with a huge weight off your back, and a new-found inspiration to put your plans into action.

5. Follow 3 people on LinkedIn with profiles and careers you admire

The difference between Following and Connecting on LinkedIn:

  • You should “connect” with people you know.
  • You should “follow” people you do not know, but you want to see what they post, and want their posts to show up on your feed.

Following is important because it allows you...

05 Sep 2022Why Having a Niche Is Important for Job Hunters (Ep 150)00:19:28

In this episode, I discuss why it’s essential to find your niche and the common misconceptions about niching down that we need to debunk so you can get your next job faster.

If you believe you are a generalist without a specific niche, unique industry expertise, sector expertise, or deep knowledge of a particular area, you're not alone. Many executives believe they are generalists, and they may even announce that on their LinkedIn profiles and resumes, which is a big mistake!

Every recruiter who has been a guest on this podcast de-bunks this myth that it’s better to be a generalist than an expert. Every single one of them has encouraged you, listeners, to find your expertise and flaunt it.

02 Aug 2021The One Thing Every Successful Executive Has in Common (Ep 93)00:22:21

Dedicating time to plan your career is a great long-term investment.

In this podcast episode, I address one of the biggest issues I discuss with prospective coaching clients when they want to get fast results in job searching or career progression. I ask them to forget about me (i.e., the coach) for a moment. And think: are you dedicating time to this project? If not, are you willing to? Because coaching is an excellent investment, but it will only work if you incorporate into your life a new routine to sustain your career, ensure you progress towards your goals, and keep the opportunities coming to you in the long term.

01 Nov 2021Two-Year Anniversary and the Future of Life and Work (Ep 106)00:23:46

In this episode, we will talk about the future of life and work for the executive professional.

And in this episode, we celebrate two years of The Job Hunting Podcast, as well as my coaching business, including the Job Hunting Made Simple online course and coaching program, my services such as the LinkedIn Audits and the private consultations, which you can book online when you need them, as well as the Reset Your Career workshop, which is coming back on the 25th of November, that’s actually the 24th for those in the US, Canada UK, and Europe since I am based in Australia.
