Use Stories to Share Your Message

Stories are a terrific way to reach your audience, and build know, like, and trust. They’re also the single best way to get in front of other eyeballs (or replace Twitter’s retweet) on platforms like Instagram. Instagram is my go-to place for stories, but you should share your story content on your personal Facebook profile, LinkedIn, Twitter, and potentially TikTok as well.
  1. Show up daily: vlogs are best ROI for time-to-impact, polls and sliders are also fun
  2. Use the Clipomatic app (or similar) to auto caption for people watching on silent
  3. Shout out creators and their content
  4. Use your phone’s screen or video capture with microphone to comment on your content
  5. Use the Spotify share feature to share to IG stories with Spotify link
  6. Use Canva templates and stock video to put messages in front of video

About our Guest: Tim Cavey

Tim Cavey is a husband, stepfather of two, 8th grade teacher, assistant principal, and the host of the Teachers on Fire podcast. In 2019, he completed a Master's in Educational Leadership degree that re-ignited his fire for teaching and put him on a new path of growth, professional reflection, and content creation. Tim's a firm believer in the growth mindset and advocates often for the kinds of informal professional learning that can be found on social media and in blogs, vlogs, or podcasts. When he's not creating content or spending time with his family, you'll find Tim hiking, flying his drone, or paddleboarding in the chilly waters of the Pacific northwest.

02 Jun 20214 Critical Hacks Every Website Needs00:17:00
In this episode of the Jeff Bradbury Show, Jeff discusses the 4 things that every podcast website needs to have to be efficient and successful. If you are a new listener to TeacherCast, we would love to hear from you. Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today.

4 Critical Things Your Website Needs To Be Successful

A Focus

Every website needs a focus but not every website HAS a focus. When developing your website, there are only two major focuses that you should be thinking about…. YOU, and YOUR AUDIENCE.

A Well-Organized Office Suite

Over the last few years, I have been asked the same question over and over … “how do you keep everything organized?” The answer is simple … GET ORGANIZED AND STAY ORGANIZED! Last year, I converted all my TeacherCast files from Google into Microsoft Office documents and started using Microsoft Teams to keep everything neatly wrapped under one digital roof. Because of this system, I am now able to quickly create a series of templates that span weeks into the future saving me countless hours of prep time each week. Using applications such as Microsoft Teams, Planner, and Microsoft 365 has provided me not only with an organizational system from which I can build my business but also allows me to have more time at home with my family.

Clearly Defined Landing Pages

Every website is made up of posts and pages, but what is the difference? Blog posts, podcast posts, and other like content are uni-themed pieces of content that are dynamic in nature. Your pages, however, are vehicles where not only your posts and podcasts live, but your audience spends the majority of their time. Creating landing pages that not only tell your story, but walk your user through a content journey will allow you to determine not only what they click on, but HOW they click on the content you are creating.

Email Marketing

If you are looking to Build Your EDU Brand, then email marketing needs to be always on the front of your mind. The ability to bring in a reader or listener to your website is easy, but capturing their email and allowing them the opportunity to be a part of your inner circle is a completely different ball game. Your email marketing starts on the top of your front page (no pop-up’s please) and ends months and months later when you convert those users into paying customers of your book, online course, or additional content. 19 May 2021The 5 Non-Negotiable Rules for Professional Branding00:19:50
In this episode of the Jeff Bradbury Show, Jeff shares his 5 Non-Negotiable Rules for Personal and Professional Branding. If you are a new listener to TeacherCast, we would love to hear from you. Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today.

5 Rules of Personal and Professional Branding

Be Hyper Focused

This first one is important and a rule that I often break. When you are trying to create something that you want people to remember you for, you must stay hyper-focused. When a user comes to your website, listens to your podcast, or sees you on Social Media, you want them to instantly connect with not only who you are, but what your message is. This will help you not only stay on brand but keep you focused on hitting your target avatar. If you create content in multiple content streams it gets messy and tends to confuse your audience who will eventually grow to expect a certain type of content from you each week. On TeacherCast, the content is broken down into 5 distinct categories, General EdTech, Instructional Coaching, Website Design, Podcasting, and Build your EDU Brand. It is possible that someone will visit the website interested in learning about all these topics, but more likely that they are visiting for only one topic and not interested in the others. For this reason, I offer them multiple Social Media accounts where they can feel like they are getting the content they are interested in without being bombarded by content they are not interested in. If you look at many of the larger brands, this same philosophy applies. They might have a Twitter account for their company and an individual Twitter account to support individual applications or programs within the company. For smaller companies and those just getting started, I don’t recommend this method at all. When starting as a new brand, companies should create a single brand that is memorable, on point with their content and most of all, hyper focused on their company message.

Be Authentic

One of the biggest lessons that anyone can learn early on in their brands is the ability to become vulnerable and authentic with their audience. It is extremely difficult to gain a subscriber, attract a podcast listener, or entice a company to work with you. On the other hand, it’s extremely easy for someone to click the unfollow or unsubscribe button and walk away forever. Have you ever thought about how much time it takes you to gain a follower, a subscriber, or like? Out of all the 5 Rules, this is the most difficult one to live up to. Being Authentic means being vulnerable. You must put yourself “out there” to your audience in a way that makes them not only know who you are, but care about you enough for them to want to come back to you for added conversations. For some content creators this is easy. I often see educators at conferences who have a talent for being in front of groups and letting themselves be present in the moment. For me this is scarry. For the longest time, I put up a wall between myself and my audience. For the first several years of TeacherCast, I even (on purpose) omitted my name from the website. Even to this day, I still refer to TeacherCast as “it” or in the third person. Often, I when asked how the website or podcast is doing, I respond with “it’s going great” or “we are doing some good things together”. In hindsight, this is a defense mechanism to hide how proud I am of my accomplishments and how much I am proud of how many people the podcast has affected over the years. About 4 years into TeacherCast, I decided to add my name to the sidebar on the front page. This was a BIG STEP and a step that only happened once I met someone at a conference who said something shocking to me. They said, “I listen to your podcast all of the time, but I would never know it was you because you...

  • Imposter syndrome is a common feeling when starting a new venture, but it can be overcome by focusing on your own accomplishments and seeking support from positive influences.
  • Beliefs are powerful tools for making change, both internally and in the world. By challenging and changing your beliefs, you can overcome fear and achieve your goals.
  • Learning from others who have already achieved what you want to do is invaluable. Look for examples where your beliefs are wrong and use them to change your mindset.

Episode 3: 10 Rules For Building Your EDU Brand

How Do I Build My EDU Brand? (User Questions)

Beginner Question: I have an idea for a brand … now what?

Congratulations!, you have an idea for a new podcast, blog, website, or another type of content creating idea. What is the next step? What is the first thing you should do once you have this idea?

My personal advice for anyone in this position is to write down everything you are thinking at that moment. This could be done with pencil and paper or perhaps through a digital application such as Evernote, OneNote or even a Google Doc. The most important thing is that you create a place (like a journal) where you can start to put your ideas together.

The second thing you should do is find someone you trust and begin having conversations about your idea. You should choose someone who you not only have confidence in, but who you know will give you an honest opinion rather it be positive or...

The Teach Better Team has been built on best practice instructional pillars, but without a growth mindset, Professional Development is like throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. It is our belief that the first step toward being better, every day, begins with carrying a mindset focused on being open-minded to small steps. That is the foundation of what we do; The Teach Better Mindset to be Better today than we were yesterday. And Better tomorrow than we were today.

08 Jan 20205 Rules of Personal and Professional Branding for Educational Content Creators00:16:52
Are you looking to grow your platform but not sure where to start? In this episode of the Jeff Bradbury Show, we are going be taking a look at 5 Rules of Personal and Professional Branding. If you are a new listener to TeacherCast, we would love to hear from you. Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today!

5 Rules of Personal and Professional Branding

Be Hyper Focused

When you are trying to create something that you want people to remember you for, you must stay hyper-focused. This will help you not only stay on brand but keep you focused on hitting your target avatar. If you create content in multiple content streams it gets messy and tends to confuse your audience who will eventually grow to expect a certain type of content from you each week. For example, if you are used to writing long-form content then it’s best to keep that format. Suddenly switching to short-form content might turn off some of your long-time supporters.

Be Authentic

One of the biggest lessons that anyone can learn early on in their brands is the ability to become vulnerable and authentic with their audience. It is extremely difficult to gain a subscriber, attract a podcast listener, or entice a company to work with you. On the other hand, it’s very easy to

Have a Story

Audiences connect to people, not to content. If you create a great blog post or write a good book, you may get several people checking it out, but once they get what they need, they will eventually bounce and might never come back. However, if you can find a way to tell your story through your content your audience will be able to connect not with just what they are trying to consume, but with YOU the content creator.

Be Consistent

Being consistent means being consistent everywhere. When you go through the process of creating a brand you take the time to think about your logo, brand colors, fonts, styles, and tone of your product. (and so much more) Consistency is the one thing that makes people remember you. Think about your favorite soft drink company. What makes them stand out from the pack? Is it the way that their drink tastes? Maybe … but I bet it’s also the way the product looks, or the packaging they use, or the colors and style of their logos. Consistency is super important when creating your brand kit as well as any content that you produce.

Live Your Brand

Have you ever seen a speaker get up and do a big presentation and then get off the stage and do a complete 180 when you meet them? If you are hyper-focused on what you are doing, being consistent and authentic about your story then you are on the fast track to living your brand. Your audience wants to route for you. They want to see you succeed. They want to know what you are going to be posting next because they want to get to know YOU.

Productivity Tips for Building Your EDU Brand

Create a List of Everything That Needs To Be Completed

So you are interested in being productive this year? One of the best pieces of advice that I give anyone, no matter podcaster, blogger, or coach is to toss the computer aside and take out a simple pencil and paper. Using your elementary tools, write down anything and everything that you need to do and break down each step that is required to complete those steps. Next, determine what can be done in the short term and what needs more breathing room to complete. Once you are organized, you can then move on to the next few items in this blog to help your organization take shape and create action items for each of the tasks.

Create a Reasonable Schedule for Your Business and Your Family

I don't know about you, but I need to revolve TeacherCast around being both a full-time educator and a full-time father and a full-time husband. That doesn't leave much time to do very much these days (or the past 7 years). Trust me, it's easy to try to bite off more than you can in a week and it's easy to try to keep up with others who don't have the same responsibilities that you do. When creating a schedule for your content, don't forget to include time for all of your family responsibilities as well as time for creating your content.

Select the Best Tools For Your EDU Brand

Whether you are first starting out with a new idea, or have been working on your EDU Brand for several years, a good assessment of the tools and applications you are using is always warranted. When you first start out, it is understandable to look for free tools that you don't need to spend too much time setting up. This gives you the ability to get your brand up and running and quickly in front of your Avatar. However, once you get up and running, and perhaps when money starts coming in, you might want to take a survey of the tools that you are using and ask yourself if you should be upgrading your gear or SAAS systems to help you stay on top of your competition. On TeacherCast, I use a variety of tools to keep all of my shows, blog posts, and clients organized. Last year, I switched my primary cloud storage over to Microsoft 365. Even though I still have the majority of my files in Google Drive, I have come to rely on Microsoft applications such as Teams, Planner, and Stream to keep everything organized.

    Create an Automation Process

Think of something that you love to do. Now think of yourself doing everything else in the world that is somehow stopping you from doing that one thing. These are the items in your life that need an automation process. Everything from emails to contact and bookmark syncing to newsletter writing should somehow be automated. These things take up a ton of time each week and it's important to find a way to spend more time doing what is profitable for your EDU Brand and spend less time doing what you don't need to be spending your time on. A good example of this is simple, yet professional email replies. Both Outlook and Gmail have the ability to create a series of Canned Responses that you can quickly turn to when replying to cold emails.

    Develop Templates Wherever Possible

As stated earlier, I moved the majority of TeacherCast over to Microsoft 365, but there is one small, yet important piece of TeacherCast that is...
21 Feb 20205 Reasons Why It’s Important To “Define Your Why” When Building Your EDU Brand00:46:02
As a podcaster, writer, blogger, or any type of content creator, we are often telling a story... often the story of a guest or another person. Our job as storytellers is to create a world for our listeners and readers that set up our subjects as the hero of their stories and their worlds so that they are standing tall both at the beginning and end of the blog or podcast. But how often do we ever get the opportunity to get up and tell our personal hero stories? It turns out that this is one of the most important things that we can do as creators. The ability to not only craft the stories of others but create our own stories is one of the most important things that we can do to Build Our Own EDU Brands. In this episode of the Jeff Bradbury Show, we meet podcaster, speaker, author, and life long educator Barbara Bray who explains to us the power and importance of Defining our Why. This subtle yet powerful vulnerability that each of us needs to possess is important not only to help our audience connect with us, but for us to be able to connect with our inner passions and gifts that we all possess. Do you have a Why Story? We would love to hear from you! If you are a new listener to TeacherCast, we would love to hear from you. Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today!

10 Expert Tips To Help You Build Your EDU Brand

Identify Your Target Audience … EARLY

For so many educators, they create content just to create content and then all of a sudden they call themselves a business owner and entrepreneur. This is almost completely backward from what happens in the non-edu world.

In business, you spend months trying to figure out a pain point. Then you try to come up with a cost-effective solution to solve that pain point. Then you learn everything about who has those pain points and you do everything that you can to attract them to your solution. Sounds pretty easy???

Successful companies identify who their target market is first and THEN create the solutions.

28 Dec 2019Welcome To The Jeff Bradbury Show: A Podcast Helping You Build Your EDU Brand00:05:35
Welcome to the Jeff Bradbury Show, a new podcast from the TeacherCast Educational Network designed to help YOU… Build your EDU Brand. I want to start out first with a few questions:
    • Are you comfortable with your current level of income for your family?
    • Are you seeking new avenues for professional learning and personal adventure this year?
    • Are you looking to take your interests and dreams and build a small business to help you share your passions with the world?

Welcome to the Jeff Bradbury Show, a podcast to help You Build YOUR EDU Brand. This podcast has been a dream of mine for the last few years. It is actually based on conversations that I have had over the last 8+ years with both teachers and edtech companies about the way that educators are thinking of themselves as marketing opportunities and not just as in-class teachers. Each episode of the Jeff Bradbury Show will be a conversation between me and you. Together, we will figure out together how to help you better provide for your family by creating a recognizable EDU Brand through your website, social media, email marketing, and conference networking.

Why Create The Jeff Bradbury Show?

This podcast will be a bit different than other podcasts on The TeacherCast Educational Network. Instead of doing a show focused on EdTech or on what happens in the classroom, this podcast will be a bit more personal. In 2011, I was co-hosting a podcast with a friend from California all about Apple, iPhones, and Technology. In the spring, he and I spoke about my desire to create a podcast that was educationally focused to help teachers learn how to use tech in their classrooms. This became the TeacherCast Podcast. Over the last 9 years, TeacherCast has allowed me to create a globally recognized professional development network based on audio podcasts, video tutorials, online courses, webinars, newsletters, and in-person professional development. It has essentially created an additional income stream for my family that allows me to stay at home and be the best husband and father that I can be. This is what I hope to share with you!

Who Is The Jeff Bradbury Show Speaking To?

The Jeff Bradbury Show is designed for educators who are looking to build a website, create an online presence and use social media to build an audience brand with the purpose of turning it into a profitable side business to support their family.

What Will You Learn From The Jeff Bradbury Show?

The TeacherCast Educational Network has helped me and my family not only create an additional source of revenue, but it has also helped us provide amazing opportunities for our triplets. For the past 9 years, I have learned all of these skills through the school of experience and it is through The Jeff Bradbury Show that I hope to share these stories with you to help you create an extra revenue stream for your family and help you build your EDU Brand. Topics discussed on the show will include:
    • Web Design
    • Email Marketing
    • Social Media
    • Search Engine Optimization
    • How To Create Buzzworthy Digital Content in Print, Audio, and Video Formats

02 Jan 2020The Three Most Important Reasons To Start A Personal Or Professional EDU Brand00:18:12
Are you seeking an extra income stream for your family or additional teaching resources for your classroom? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then you might be ready to take the first step in Building Your EDU Brand this year. In this episode of The Jeff Bradbury Show, we take a look at Three Reasons Why Educators Should Be Creating Personal or Professional EDU Brands. If you are a new listener to TeacherCast, we would love to hear from you. Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today!

What is a Personal EDU Brand?

When we think of personal or professional branding, we speak about a number of topics.
    • How Do Others See You?
    • How Do You Stand Apart From Others?
    • What Makes You Unique?

To sum it up, your personal brand is how OTHERS see YOU. There are several reasons that you might be interested in creating a personal or professional EDU Brand this year. Some of these reasons might be:
    • To Support Your Family
    • To Support Your Students
    • To Support Your Passions

3 Reasons To Start Your Own Personal or Professional EDU Brand

    To Support Your Family

    • By building an online digital portfolio that includes associations with edtech companies, you may have the opportunity to attend professional development events sponsored by the company which could save you and your family money.
    • Kids love Free T-Shirts!
    • Swag is pretty awesome!

    To Support Your Students

    • Building a connection to other educators and edtech companies give you the opportunity to gather knowledge and additional resources that you can take back to your classrooms.
    • Membership in EdTech ambassador programs provides you an extended PLN in which you can learn new ways to use applications and can help you create additional resources and activities for your students.
    • Many teachers have to pay out of pocket hundreds of dollars each year for supplies. By working with other educators and educational companies you have the possibility of getting support for your students through physical or digital resources.

    To Support Your Passions

    • Are you searching for professional learning beyond what your school district provides?
    • Are you seeking the opportunity to work with educators who share the same passions that you do?

5 Ways to Build Your EDU Brand After Retirement

    1. Start before you retire and carve a niche (present as EDUCATOR, not a consultant). Retired educator is the perfect person for everything. Apply to present at national conventions. Take that momentum into retirement. Form the corporation (S-Corp), get a credit card, get an accountant.
    2. Start an email list. (Constant Contact, MailChimp, Convertkit, etc.) Email the list weekly.
    3. Write a book (ebook). (Also have a shorter free lead magnet.)
    4. Repurpose content (1 blog post per week becomes blog post becomes newspaper article, podcast, YouTube, Lumen5, Headliner, social media posts, Medium, LinkedIn, HARO).
    5. Word of mouth is the best social media exposure. (Keep in contact with people you worked with before retirement.)

    About Dean Tolson

Dean Tolson was one of the top prep basketball players in the state of Missouri his junior and senior years at Central High School in Kansas City. So, when the colleges came running, he accepted a full ride to the University of Arkansas. Despite being unable to read or write, he went on to be one of the most prolific players to grace the Razorbacks’ campus. In 1974, Tolson was the first basketball player to be drafted by both the NBA and the ABA, having been selected by the Seattle Supersonics and the New York Nets, respectively, ultimately playing for the legendary Bill Russell in Seattle. Following his basketball career, Tolson made the courageous decision to re-enroll at the University of Arkansas, and repeated all four years, this time legitimately. At the age of fifty-two, he returned to the university for three more years, earning a master’s degree and graduated magna cum laude. Tolson’s gripping story from his childhood in an orphanage to his academic achievements is not only an indictment of a system that would just “pass you along” from grade to grade as a hot basketball prospect without any educational accountability, but also an inspiring story of overcoming great odds to find success.

Growing up, I always enjoyed being active. As the youngest of 5 kids, I often played sports with my brothers and the neighborhood kids in the back yard and rode by bike or ran to get where I needed to go. That passion for exercise carried over to high school and college where I lettered in both volleyball and track. Looking back, there has NEVER been a time in my life where exercise wasn’t a part of my life. To me, it gives me energy and makes me feel good. Over the past 19 years, that passion has helped me discover my purpose which is to empower women to live their best life by giving them the tools they need to look and feel their best. I am so grateful to be able to wake up each day knowing I am part of someone’s transformation, inside and out.

He is currently working with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and is the author, chair and lead instructor of the leadership training course called “Contest Management.” Jay has had many articles published, and has been quoted as a source in numerous articles, including, USA Today: “Security A Growing Concern.” Jay graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a BS in Physical Education, followed by earning his master’s degree from the United States Sports Academy in Sports Management. He’s currently an elected Board Trustee for the Village of Wind Point; his major responsibility was overseeing the Village’s Police, Fire, and Safety.

    About Safe Sport Zone

Nearly all school districts have security measures in place during school days. However, similar risk management policies are too often overlooked or ignored for evening events. Safe Sport Zone has developed plans to assure safer environments for activities occurring at times other than during the regular school hours. Safe Sport Zone has developed a staffing model for athletic administrators to adopt as a best practice. Spectator issues, identifying all fans, athletic concerns, facilities maintenance, evacuation procedures, and applications for almost any emergency are all part of the exercises. For interscholastic athletics to survive, the games kids play have to be enjoyable, entertaining, safe, and educationally driven. Safe Sport Zone is committed to these principles.
