03 Apr 2017 | Ep. 23 - Who Knew? Aliya Updates | 00:53:02
Happy Yom Aliya! This year, Aliya day falls on April 6th. Before it gets lost in the Passover hubbub, Alan and Mike decided to interview Marc Rosenberg, Director of the Pre-Aliyah Department at Nefesh B’Nefesh. With some surprising data and much food for thought, this episode is fascinating and thought provoking, no matter where you live in the world.

20 Apr 2017 | Ep. 24 - What's a Jew to You? | 00:46:35
Sometimes you need to put daily details aside, and get to the big ideas. Alan and Mike take on what seems like a simple question: What are the Jews? They talk about why even Jews find this difficult to answer, and why Zionism has a pretty specific answer.
Believe it or not, the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews (its not bad!)

27 Apr 2017 | Ep. 25 - One Nation, Many Identities | 00:37:26
Identity, ethnicity and nationality are complicated topics underlying much of the turmoil that we are seeing around the world. What does it mean to really be French? Or American? These questions are driving politics in those countries. Is there any wonder that Jews and Israelis face complicated questions as well?
Listener Noam was intrigued by last episode's discussion of Jewish Nationalism as the defining idea of Zionism and the State of Israel. He posted his questions on our Facebook page (address is below) and even sent us a voice message! This week, Alan, Benji and Mike address those questions, and explore modern Jewish nationalism.
The Ruth Calderon webinar for the Shalom Hartman Institute can be found on our Facbook page. (address below)
For a seemingly unrelated discussion that is VERY relevant, you can listen to author Andrew Sullivan discuss the complicated nature of national identity in our time, and how it is impacting global politics. It will be the topic of his upcoming article in New York magazine - http://www.wnyc.org/story/reactionary-era

11 May 2017 | Ep. 27 - What's So Funny About Ethno-National Democracies? | 00:17:07
Its a shorter episode than usual, recorded on a break between classes. But hey, teachas gonna teach.
Alan and Mike waste no time getting politically philosophical about Israel's democracy. In what ways is it similar or different from other Western nation states? Why is is so essential to Israel's identity? Why should democracy be essential for every nation?
P.S. Why isn't anybody making a musical about Jefferson?

18 May 2017 | Ep. 28 - Hummus: The Movie Premiere | 00:32:57
This year's big Gap Year event was at the Israeli premiere of JerusalemU's new film, "Hummus: The Movie". Alan and Mike decided to interview attendees with questions about gap year, the Jewish future, culture, and of course, hummus. It's an unusual episode outside the walls of the Teachers Lounge, but we thought you might like to meet our students and colleagues and hear what they have to say. 23 Jul 2017 | Ep. 38 - Temple Mount: Beyond the Headlines | 00:47:01
Alan and Mike felt that the current simmering crisis warranted some analysis. They discuss why the Temple Mount is always such a source for tension, and where things might go moving forward. What should the Israelis do now? What should the Palestinians do, and why aren't they? There are no easy answers, but there is a lot to unpack.

27 Jul 2017 | Ep. 39 - Jerusalem Syndrome | 00:42:17
After wrapping up the Jerusalem news from this week, Alan and Mike decide to broaden the context. Although many say that Jerusalem is a shared city, they explain its unique role to the Jews. These are fundamental understandings that are needed for understanding politics, history, or even one's own identity. Needless to say, we think that this is an important issue.

03 Aug 2017 | Ep. 40 - Those Who Do Not Remember... | 00:42:45
This time... its personal!
As teachers always trying to show the relevance of history to current events, Alan and Mike were perturbed to hear some of Jared Kushner's leaked comments. They feel that Kushner is accurately expressing a commonly held belief that smart people can solve political problems just by looking around and ahead, but not behind. They aren't really interested in the current administration, but in the reality that this idea seems to be so pervasive in our culture.
So they embark to show how George Santayana's famous aphorism relates to trying to make peace in the middle east. In this case the relevance of the last 50 years of middle east history to making a peace deal.
Its a battle royale between two quotes! One from Jared Kushner and one from George Santayana!
The Kushner quote is, "Everyone finds an issue, that 'You have to understand what they did then' and 'You have to understand that they did this.' But how does that help us get peace? Let's not focus on that. We don’t want a history lesson. We’ve read enough books. Let’s focus on, How do you come up with a conclusion to the situation?"
The Santayana quote is question is, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
Who is ready to grumble?!
Also, here are some other quotes from Santayana that relate to the topic:
"A child educated only at school is an uneducated child."
"Fanaticism consists of redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim."
"The wisest mind has something yet to learn."
"Knowledge of what is possible is the beginning of happiness."
