In this episode of the Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, explores playfulness in intimacy, discussing the use of costumes and role play to re-ignite the marital spark and enrich sexual encounters. It’s an especially timely topic with Halloween around the corner. Familiar roles in the bedroom tend to limit sexual expression-breaking free from them through embodying new personas can help couples deepen their connection and discover new aspects of their personalities.

Dr. Stockwell shares real-life examples of couples who transformed their intimacy through role play. She notes that Halloween creates the perfect occasion to strengthen emotional and physical bonds through engaging in imaginative exploration, in ways that enhance your sexual repertoire.

Also in this episode:

  • Embracing playful exploration invites unexpressed aspects of one's personality into the bedroom, thus enriching the partnership.

  • There is an important distinction between healthy roleplay and the misuse of power dynamics.

  • Expanding self-expression is not limited to the bedroom and everyday interactions benefit as well.

How do you feel about scheduled intimacy? Many couples feel it's only necessary for those who lack passion or have marital issues. However, I’m here to tell you that’s just not true. We make time for other things we value, like exercise and eating regularly. Why shouldn’t we also carve out designated time for intimacy? In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, I’m talking about the misconceptions surrounding this and the many benefits that couples experience when they priortize sex in this way.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • [00:46] How do you feel about scheduling sex?
  • [4:48] How to alter your perception of scheduled intimacy
  • [07:57] The anticipation of scheduled intimacy
  • [13:51] Guiding intimate expectations and communication
  • [17:40] The Intimacy Program

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • There is a misunderstanding that scheduling sex is only for couples that lack passion or are having marital issues - that’s not true.
  • When we value things, we schedule it into our lives like exercise or eating regularly. Why shouldn’t we priortize sex in the same way?
  • Just like looking forward to dining at a nice restaurant or going out on a date with your partner, scheduling intimacy builds anticipation.
  • Scheduling sex increases intentionality and communication within your relationship, which leads to greater intimacy.

When thinking about flirting, it’s common to think of initial meetings, picking someone up in a public place, dating, or when getting to know a partner.

About Alexandra Stockwell, MD

My mission is to change the cultural narrative around long-term relationships from one of ongoing stagnation and compromise to the delectable joy and deep gratification a couple feels while building passion and excitement on a daily basis.

For over two decades, I have been guiding men and women to bring pleasure and purpose back into all aspects of life— from the daily grind of running a household to creating ecstatic experiences in the bedroom!

I embarked on this journey not only for my patients but for myself and my own relationship. I wanted more for my life and my marriage than logistics, and discussions about childcare.

Live Coaching: Married Man Wants To Flirt With His Wife

30 Nov 2022102. When Your Partner Isn’t Into Personal Growth00:19:13

In my intimacy coaching business, over the years many women have reached out and expressed interest in working with me, while also sharing a lot of frustration because their husband “wasn’t interested in doing the work.” However, anytime one of those husbands chose to have a short conversation with me, it turned out that he definitely was interested in exploring coaching with me. I found this to be true 100% of the time!

It used to confuse me, until I came to understand that people tend to project their own personal growth style onto their partner, and then find the partner lacking. These men, who were described by their wives as having no interest in personal growth and coaching, turned out to be quite interested and motivated. However, they were not interested in contorting themselves to fit the definition of “personal growth” assigned to them by their wives. In other words, they were not interested in neglecting their own ways of growing and learning, in order to  conform to what their wives wanted.

Once they spoke with me and realized that I highly valued their perspective and preferences, everything would change. They would enthusiastically open up and tell me how much they wanted to put attention on their marriage.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • Why personal growth doesn’t look the same from person to person
  • A story about a woman I coached who traveled for work and struggled with long-distance communication with her husband
  • A man I coached on his own because his wife wasn’t interested (and doesn’t speak English) and the amazing results he created in his marriage.

If you have a partner who isn’t interested in personal growth, your instinct may be to try to change them, or give up on them...I hope this episode makes you question those options and inspires you to adopt a different strategy instead.

11 May 202273. Seek Growth00:26:15

When children are young, it’s fascinating to watch their growth and milestones. It’s easy to be excited about watching them learn how to roll over, crawl, talk, walk, and tie their shoes. As we all get older, there’s a sameness about us that isn’t so exciting.

The sixth and final Key to an Intimate Marriage is to “Seek Growth”. In your marriage, that means:

  • If you’re doing the same things over and over, it gets boring and unfulfilling no matter how wonderful it was the first time.
  • You need to check in with yourself and your partner about what you each know about yourselves and each other that you didn’t know 10 years ago, 10 days ago, or even 10 minutes ago.
  • What do you desire now? How has that changed?
  • Be clear and intentional about how you prioritize growth.

No matter what happens in your relationship, you can see it through the lens of growth. Ask yourself what you can focus on and what there is to learn, so that whatever you are experiencing will be inspiration for you to grow and evolve.

In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, celebrates the milestone of 100K downloads on the podcast with her son Chris Stockwell!

A few weeks back, I hit 100,000 downloads and that means people have been interested in,  and listened to, what I have to say on The Intimate Marriage podcast 100,000 times! For me, it's such an incredible celebration. It's a celebration that belongs for me because I created this podcast and it's my vision. It's also a celebration that belongs to you, the listener, because you have created this with me. What’s most important in my view, is that it's a celebration that really belongs to the world, because the more individuals and couples that know how to create a truly wonderful, intimate marriage, the more likely the world becomes a better place. Today is also a celebration, because my incredible son, Christopher Stockwell, is joining me for the show! We have a wide ranging conversation about intimacy in film, building communities and being present in relationships.

Also in this episode:

  • An incredible review from a listener that really touched my heart
  • The privilege for an adult parent to feel seen, not just as a mother or father, but to be seen more fully, in wholeness
  • My mission to change the cultural narrative around long term relationships, so that people know long term relationships are not where passion just tapers off and fades away
  • Intimacy in the movies, and the pace at which relationships evolve in films
  • The best way to center yourself and find yourself present in the moment
  • The importance of respect in relationships and reflections on the volcanic communication style Chris and I navigated when he was in high school
  • Why Chris has accepted that he can have different energy around different people, and connect on different levels with everyone around him.

06 Mar 2024168. Unlocking Deeper Connection: The Power of Small Gestures in Marriage00:25:09

In this episode of the Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD dives into the profound impact that small, thoughtful gestures can have on creating a deeper connection in marriage. She emphasizes that such acts don’t have to be expensive or time-consuming, as the smallest deeds are sometimes the most significant in nurturing a deep connection between partners. Put differently, small gestures are the seeds which grow into emotional, sensual, and erotic intimacy blossoms.

Dr. Alexandra brings up the concept that 'Small is Beautiful,' explaining how minor, deliberate actions—like turning on an outside light or sending an estimated time of arrival—can express profound love and care in a relationship. She provides practical advice on how couples can integrate these minor but mighty acts of love into their daily routine to enhance closeness and connection.

Also in this episode:

  • Small, easy gestures in daily life have a huge impact on the emotional and intimate connection in a marriage.

  • Consistency in these acts is key, not the complexity or grandeur of the gesture.

  • Romantic gestures don't need to be spontaneous; they can be planned and scheduled by the giver while still allowing for a feeling of spontaneity and surprise for the one receiving them.

  • The 'no pain, no gain' philosophy does not apply when cultivating relationships; well chosen, simple acts, which require minimal effort, can yield significant results.

Identifying and expressing your desires is one of the most important aspects of real intimacy. However, I frequently see couples struggle with this–both with knowing what they want and also being able to say it to one another.

Some people have no idea where to begin in order to figure out what they desire. Others know exactly what they want but don’t know how to say it clearly, or they find it prohibitively uncomfortable to do so. And then some people don’t know what they want nor how to say it.

It can be helpful when your spouse asks you, “what do you want?” But that question has at least two different meanings, with two very different contexts. It’s important to be able to distinguish between them. In one context the question is genuinely about you and your desires, and in the other it’s about the question asker’s needs in that moment.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • Two different contexts and meanings that become relevant when you’re asked what you want and how to respond to each one
  • Tactics to help you discover what you really want
  • Why it’s important to give yourself time to identify what you want, and then share it

…plus much more.

Since it’s the beginning of a new year, I know you may be setting goals and intentions–doing so requires you to tap into your desires and navigate any blocks you have. I hope this episode helps you in achieving that.

02 Mar 202263. What Is An Intimate Marriage?00:16:15

It’s fitting that I’m launching Season 2 on the day of my 26th wedding anniversary. Part of my celebration is to share with you what an intimate marriage really is.

My mission is to change the cultural narrative that long-term relationships are where passions go to dwindle off and die. On the contrary, I want the collective world at large to see that in a long lasting relationship, there is the most tender, gratifying, expansive, vulnerable, delicious intimacy available.

When I first got married, I was deeply in love and very happy but on the other hand, I was also convinced we would end up divorced and I mentally prepared myself for that inevitability. I didn’t believe that it could be fantastic for the long haul.

Now, I absolutely believe that a fantastic relationship is possible, you just need to make a point of creating it.

What happens when you create an intimate marriage?

  • You’ll be happier
  • You’ll have more professional success
  • You’ll have the pleasure of being in a partnership where you’re both thriving
  • Your children will learn how to create it for themselves

We don’t know what the future holds, but we’re willing to lean in and discover it together.

Email me at info@alexandrastockwell.com and let me know if this resonates for you!

21 Jun 2023131. Where An Intimacy Coach Stores Her Bread | w/ Rodd Stockwell00:22:34

In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, welcomes back Rodd Stockwell to explore the infamous bread story that lead to a shift in their marriage to embrace uncompromising intimacy.

Initially, a trivial disagreement arose between Alexandra and Rodd regarding bread storage. Rodd grew up storing bread in the refrigerator, while Alexandra stored it on the counter. Ultimately, Alexandra compromised by storing the bread in the fridge, leading to resentment. Over time, they grew curious about each other's perspectives, viewing the issue objectively and depersonalizing it. They realized the importance of being seen, heard, and supported in their relationship; they focused on understanding each other's perspectives and approached the matter objectively and impersonally. They achieved a strong emotional bond by openly communicating their needs while still maintaining their individuality. They worked together to enhance their decision-making process by balancing practicality and spontaneity. This journey brought them closer, improved their relationship, and deepened their understanding.

Also in this episode:

  • Differences in upbringing and expectations
  • The similarities between Alexandra and Rodd's backgrounds
  • The first step of compromise is to become curious
  • Compromise is the opposite of drying out
  • Where Alexandra and Rodd store their bread now
  • The power of seeing and hearing your spouse
  • How you do anything is how you do everything
  • How our family cultures may differ

31 Jul 2024189. Unlock the Secrets of Female Orgasms00:23:27

In this episode of the Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD discusses  female orgasms in great detail, in honor of National Orgasm Day. She explores the origins of the day, various types of orgasms, and the differences between "masculine" and "feminine" orgasms. She also explores different types of orgasms, emphasizing that the classification is based on the anatomy and physiology being stimulated. Dr. Alexandra speaks on one way to enhance orgasmic potential, namely slow, deep breathing, as she encourages listeners to explore new realms of erotic intimacy with their partners.

Also in this episode:

  • Feminine orgasms are diverse and often misunderstood, requiring an open perspective to fully appreciate their complexity.

  • Unlike masculine orgasms, feminine orgasms can be non-linear, with varied patterns of arousal, climax, and resolution.

  • Deep, slow breathing can significantly enhance one's ability to experience richer and more fulfilling orgasms.

  • For many couples and individuals, male and female, they aspire to the typical masculine orgasm model that aims for climax. But in fact, some of the richest, expansive, erotically vital experiences happen with a more feminine approach to orgasm.

05 Oct 202294. Libido Mismatch Is A Myth00:29:47

Libido mismatch is a myth. That’s right. In my experience working with hundreds of people on relationships and intimacy, drawing the conclusion that one person has a low libido and the other person has a high libido is an oversimplification of a much larger (and much more solvable) issue.

Libido mismatch is an easy assumption to make because it is an accurate description of what seems to be happening at the moment. But, it is not an explanation and it is not the root cause of the issue at hand.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The actual most common reasons why one person wants to have sex less often than the other
  • Lifestyle changes you can make to start to boost your libido
  • Ways in which you can transform the environment around you to increase your or your partner’s desire for sex

In this episode of the Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, invites Bob Gardner to share his innovative and intriguing perspective on cultivating passion and aliveness in relationships. Bob shares his transformational journey from enduring years of shame and personal distress to removing the inner shackles and attaining the zenith of inner freedom. His teachings, influenced by the resilient ethos of Russian Cossacks, revolve around alchemizing one's bodily and emotional responses to stress. Bob emphasizes the power of direct experience and the liberation from internal constraints, affirming that freedom is indeed a learnable skill, one that stokes passion for life and relationship.

Also in this episode:

  • Bob Gardner explains the significance of training the body and mind to respond calmly to stressful stimuli through rigorous practices.

About Bob Gardner:

Bob Gardner is the Founder of The Freedom Specialist, a body-based approach to happiness, health, and well-being on auto-pilot. He is also the author of the book Built for Freedom and host of the podcast Alive and Free.

After 18 years of being trapped in addictive patterns, and on the brink of both divorce and suicide, something inside Bob told him it was not time to quit just yet. So, against the prevailing wisdom that said these problems are permanent, Bob chose to create a way to permanently eliminate them from his life. His body-based, no-nonsense approach to freedom has since helped thousands of people leave their struggles behind and find real freedom and happiness.

06 Apr 202268. Cultivate Curiosity00:29:35

The first key to an intimate marriage is: Cultivate Curiosity.

Early in a relationship, it’s easy to be curious about everything from scars, favorite foods, wild stories, spirituality and beyond. Then, as a relationship matures, the curiosity fades and you become more comfortable. You already know how they’ll order their coffee or how they’ll answer a question before you even ask. It’s beautiful to be so familiar and to free your energy to focus on other things.

The problem is that when we become so comfortable and secure in this way,  we end up missing out on the growth that we’re each going through. The drop in curiosity leads to being disconnected from one another’s internal experiences.

Curiosity also helps when you’re in the middle of a conflict. If it’s intense, the most helpful thing you can do is to stop, take a breath, and ask a curious, open-ended question. Then listen to the answer with an open mind and an open heart.

If you’re focused on being right, and no longer open to your partner’s point of view, it creates disconnection. On the other hand, when you cultivate curiosity, it builds collaboration, creativity, and connection.

If you are currently in a phase of disconnection and distance in your relationship and/or having conflict, cultivate curiosity! Ask open-ended questions and then listen generously to the responses.

If you’re in a strong, solid, connected relationship, it’s still essential to cultivate curiosity in order to make your relationship even stronger, and more joyful.

If you’re ready to create the deliciousness and joy of a growth-oriented, passionate relationship, visit theintimatemarriagepodcast.com.

16 Feb 202262. Valentine Bonus: Navigating Post-Valentine’s Fallout00:15:55

I hope you had a really wonderful Valentine’s Day that was special, delicious, and sensual. I hope you were able to use what you learned in Episode 61 to connect with your partner.

If it did not go as planned, this episode is for you!

A client of mine has a wonderful relationship most of the time, but in February they fight and get on each other’s nerves a lot. They’ve come to dread February because of the pressure to have a “perfect” Valentine’s Day to match their wonderful marriage.

If you’re feeling resentment or disappointment towards your partner, there are a few steps you can take in order to reconnect.

  1. Journal, exercise, meditate, find a way to clear the resentment so you can show up neutral and present
  2. Focus on what did go well
  3. Have a calm, respectful conversation with your partner about what happened
  4. Ask what your partner needs for this to be enjoyable, then share yours
  5. If you’d like, schedule a Valentine’s Day redo using what you’ve learned

Email me at alexandra@alexandrastockwell.com and let me know if this resonates for you!

16 Jun 202278. THE SHIFT That Will Massively Up-Level Your Relationship00:15:47

If you want to experience more connection and intimacy in your marriage, you have to know what you want. So what can you do to make more room to connect with yourself, know your desires & feel more closeness with your partner?

You can shift your focus from “doing” and prioritize an experience of “being.”

In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, discusses how you can navigate the incredibly difficult landscape when either you, or your partner, suffers through the loss, or terminal illness, of a parent.

This is not a fun topic, but it is an extremely important one that eventually comes up, at some point, in most marriages.  After all, real intimacy is not only about the sexy and fun moments–it is also about supporting a loved one through all aspects of life, and an unfortunate truth is that sickness and death find us at both expected and unexpected moments. Whether you or your spouse have lost one or both parents, or if one of you has a sick parent, or even if you currently have four healthy parents/in-laws, this episode will raise your awareness. It can help you navigate through some of the inevitably hard moments in life, in ways that are meaningful for your marriage. For those who haven’t encountered this type of hardship, I realize this is a tough subject and it may even seem morbid. But know that this is about setting yourself and your relationship up, so that you’re not blindsided by realities that will eventually happen. The orientation I provide today can also be successfully applied to other hardships you encounter as well.

Also in this episode:

  • The story of when and how I lost both my mother and my father
  • Why the spouse going through the loss can feel lonely even within a strong, connected marriage
  • The differing perspectives between the supportive spouse and the one going through the loss of their parent
  • Guidelines to get through this heartbreaking experience without creating a barrier between you and your partner
  • Specific recommendations for the supportive spouse to be able to love well during this time

05 Mar 2025220. Reviving Affection in Marriage00:21:46

Affection is one of the most valuable ways to connect in a relationship, and in this episode of the Intimate Marriage Podcast, Dr. Alexandra Stockwell talks about its importance and how couples can revive affection in marriage. Whether affection in your marriage is dwindling, or you're looking to establish it for the first time, this episode provides a roadmap to enhance your emotional and physical connection through reviving affection.

Dr. Alexandra emphasizes the importance of clear communication, discussing desires openly as a couple, and stripping affection of any transactional nature, especially tied to sexual intimacy. She shares insightful, effective strategies to reinvigorate touch and tenderness in your marital relationship.

Tips in this episode:

  • Don’t wait for your partner to read your mind. Be the first to extend affection in a calibrative, gentle manner that suits your current relationship dynamic.

  • Have a conversation with your partner about wanting more affection, ensuring you both are aligned so it doesn't come as a surprise when you start touching more.

  • Redefine affection as an end in itself, not just a prelude to sexual activity. Enjoy the intimacy of simple, non-sexual touches.

  • Engage in an exercise where each partner showcases the type of affection they prefer, promoting mutual understanding and harmony in touch.

11 Feb 202260. Set Yourself Up Right for a Happy Valentine's Day00:13:33

Valentine’s Day is often painted as a rosy, beautiful, romantic, fairytale time. Sometimes that’s true, but often it’s much more complicated.

Today, I’ll share some ways to set yourself up for a Happy Valentine’s Day. This is not theoretical- it really will help!

  1. Spend some time thinking about what Valentine’s Day really means to you. Journal about it if you want. Notice if you are bracing yourself for a disappointing time? Are you fantasizing about a gorgeous romantic evening? Explore all of your dreams, disappointments, and other associations with the holiday.
  2. Envision what you want your Valentine’s Day to be like. How do you want to feel? What do you want to experience?
  3. Get together with your partner and reminisce with each other about Valentine’s Days in the past. Keep it light. Then talk together about how you both want to celebrate this year, and plan it together.

Don’t expect your partner to read your mind! Take the time to create a win-win Valentine’s celebration for both of you. You’ll be glad you did.

I want to hear all about your plan, and how it turns out. Email me at info@alexandrastockwell.com and let me know!

30 Mar 202267. My Prescription for an Intimate Marriage00:22:50

If you’re just joining the podcast now, I recommend going back to the beginning of Season 2 to gain some context for what I’m about to cover in this episode.

We have an epidemic of conflict-free, passion-free relationships going on right now. My prescription for an intimate marriage evolved out of my medical training, years of experience coaching other couples, my own anecdotal research, and what I have learned in my own marriage.

I have codified it all in the 6 Keys to an Intimate Marriage. They are:

  • Cultivate Curiosity.
  • Embrace Honesty.
  • Be Kind.
  • Choose Happiness.
  • Take Responsibility.
  • Seek Growth.

I have seen these 6 keys work in many different kinds of relationships and many different kinds of situations. The results are wonderful!

We’ll go into more depth with each of the keys in upcoming episodes.

23 Mar 202266. Stop Compromising!00:23:28

Compromise is by far the most common relationship advice that’s given. In order to have a happy marriage you have to be good at compromising, right? Wrong!

What really happens when you compromise is that you’re holding parts of yourself back from your relationship, and that doesn’t bode well.

When you stop compromising and bring your entire self into your relationship, when you learn to accept all parts of one another, you will be able to create solutions that you couldn’t imagine on your own.

Uncompromising intimacy is the opposite of compromise. It’s glorious, and it takes intentionality.

The main reason to compromise is to avoid conflict, not rock the boat, and not mess with something that’s working well.

There are many problems with this approach:

  • Eventually, you get so skilled at compromise that you don’t even realize you’re doing it.
  • You get so used to turning away from what you want, it becomes difficult to find your desires again.
  • Unmet and uncommunicated desires often lead people to turn elsewhere.

Uncompromising intimacy is the opposite of compromise. It’s glorious, connecting, and it takes intentionality.

You’re not doing yourself any favors to compromise on your desires. The number 1 way to avoid divorce is to know what you want and know how to ask for it.

Do you know what you want? Do you know what you desire within your relationship? Do you know how to bring it up in a way that’s respectful of the relationship?

27 Apr 202271. Choose Happiness00:28:14

During my studies in college, I took many philosophy courses and one constant all the way from Ancient Greece to the present was that all human beings seek happiness. Based on what I had seen in my life so far, I didn’t really believe that was true.

Now, after my decades of work with clients and couples, I agree with the wisdom of that assertion. The problem is that most people don’t really know how to get the happiness they seek. In my 6 Keys of an Intimate Marriage, the key of “Choose Happiness” ties in with uncompromising intimacy in that you are honoring the truth that lives within you.

Listen for a story about a couple I’ve worked with and how choosing happiness has improved communication in their marriage, reduced resentment, and made them both feel much better as they worked through the keys.

I’d really love to hear what came up for you in this episode. Contact Alexandra and share your thoughts here: https://www.alexandrastockwell.com/contact/

01 Feb 2023111. Prioritizing Your Marriage Within A Successful Career: Featuring Insights From A LinkedIn Post By Marc Randolph, Co-Founder of Netflix00:19:51

In this episode, I discuss a LinkedIn post by Marc Randolph, Co-Founder of Netflix, concerning how he chooses to prioritizes his marriage even while maintaining a wildly successful career.

This post recently came up in my feed and it thrilled me to read about such a successful man, founder of numerous extremely robust companies, because he feels most proud of achieving his success while staying married to the same woman and being present as a father. To him, this is THE DEFINITION OF SUCCESS. What struck me after reading the post were the comments, many of which were negative reactions to what he’d shared. For a relatively sophisticated platform like LinkedIn, I was surprised to say the least.

You’ll learn today that spending time with your partner is not about the quantity, or even the frequency. It’s about the quality of the time spent together and the commitment to doing so.

In this episode, I share:

  • A full reading of Marc Randolph’s post from LinkedIn
  • What these negative reactions indicate about our society
  • How you can be an extremely ambitious person and prioritize your marriage
  • How my husband and I prioritize time together amidst our busy lives

10 Apr 2024173. Unlocking Passion: How Confidence Shapes Success in Love and Life - Expert Advice from Dr Alexandra Stockwell00:20:14

In this episode of the Intimate Marriage podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD dives into confidence and how it shapes success in love and life. She sheds light on the crucial role of self-confidence and how attractive it is within intimate relationships, and more specifically, how it plays out among ambitious, educated couples.

Dr Alexandra explores the common scenario where one partner craves more from their relationship while the other seems content with the status quo. She provides guidance on how to reignite passion and cultivate a deeper sense of self-worth, emphasizing the magnetic power of confidence as one of the ultimate keys to a more fulfilling and vibrant partnership.

Also in this episode:

  • Confidence is the most attractive quality in a partner and a fundamental ingredient for a passionate and thriving marriage.

  • Seeking affirmation and validation from a partner creates an unhealthy parent-child dynamic, which is detrimental for erotic connection.

  • The best course of action for someone feeling needy or rejected is to focus on developing their own sense of value and self-worth.

  • Bringing one's confident, successful self (with authenticity, not bravado) from your professional life into your personal relationship is a pivot that will result in a significant improvement in intimacy.

15 Dec 202154. ONE Extraordinary Marriage, With Alisa DiLorenzo00:30:46

On this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, I’m speaking with Alisa DiLorenzo about marriage, intimacy, and the effect of pornography on a marriage. Alisa and her husband, Tony, co-host the #1 rated ONE Extraordinary Marriage Podcast. They have been married for 25 years and have recently released their latest book, The Six Pillars of Intimacy. Today, we discuss the six forms of intimacy: emotional, physical, financial, spiritual, recreational, and sexual, and how each one is vital to create a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. Alisa also shares how she and her husband navigated a pornography addiction together and how they now help coach other couples through similar situations.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • [00:50] Introduction to Alisa and Tony DiLorenzo
  • [05:01] Pornography and marriage
  • [11:35] How secrets affect marriage
  • [16:08] The Six Pillars of Intimacy
  • [19:00] Emotional intimacy
  • [20:29] Physical intimacy
  • [24:01] Recreational intimacy
  • [29:03] What Alisa has learned through being married to Tony

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Marriages need role models of other healthy and fulfilling marriages. Alisa and Tony DiLorenzo are role models for many couples as they encourage others, coaching them with wisdom gained from their mistakes, experiences, and depth of marital knowledge.
  • When a married person is engaging in pornography, it impacts both people.
  • If something is kept a secret within a marriage, it will still impact the entire dynamic in the marriage. The longer a secret is kept, the more damage that will be done.
  • The six pillars of intimacy help create a strong and beautiful marriage that can carry the weight of challenges, because life does still happen to all of us. The pillars create an internal strength that fosters working together as a team.

When two emotionally mature adults build a relationship together, amazing things are possible. Morgan and Rob describe their journey, and what it called forth from each of them as they created the depth, juiciness, and joy they share with one another as they meet life’s challenges. Together.

We discuss controlling women, acquiescence to “the Feminine”, wounding from our relationships with our mothers along with the collision of beliefs about what it takes to have a successful relationship. Through all of that Rob and Morgan continue to find the “yes, and” that becomes possible with deeper listening, open hearts and open minds.

09 Mar 202264. Stop Believing the Lies00:18:44

If you’re having trouble in your relationship, it’s probably because you believe one of the prominent lies that are commonly accepted as de facto truth.

If you’re not feeling the sexual chemistry you used to feel, very often people will believe they married the wrong person.

  • More likely, you both just haven’t learned how to be with each other through each phase of your relationship.
  • This is a learnable skill!

If you’re treating your relationship as something transactional, doing something for your partner in the hopes that they’ll do something for you, it may work a little in the short term but that is not a long term solution.

  • Are you doing things because you enjoy making your partner happy?
  • Or are you doing things to get your partner to notice you and give you what you want?

Stop compromising!

  • If you want a passionate marriage, compromise is not the way to get there.
  • Instead, bring all of who you are (your desires, emotions, thoughts, and feelings) to the relationship and stop diminishing yourself.

If things are challenging in your relationship, that doesn’t mean you’re with the wrong person. It just means it’s time to grow, and learn how to be a better spouse to one another.

If you’re ready to create the deliciousness and joy of a growth-oriented, passionate relationship, visit theintimatemarriagepodcast.com to get started.

01 Mar 2023115. Reflecting On The Past Year Of Marriage With My Husband, Rodd Stockwell00:20:57

In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD chats with her husband, Rodd Stockwell, to reflect on their last year of marriage.

This conversation has become a wonderful tradition as part of our anniversary celebration, and we share what we’ve loved about the past year, what’s challenged us, and what we’re looking forward to. We believe that sharing this provides an invitation for others to learn from our experiences. This year in particular has been an interesting one as we have re-discovered hobbies that light us up, that we each do on our own. You’ll hear how, even though we don’t directly share in these experiences together, we each bring home a newfound joy that enhances our connection with one another.  No marriage is perfect. We all have our ups and downs. But my goal is for you to see how communication, passion and reflection can deepen your connection so that it continues to improve with each passing year.

Together we discuss:

  • My initial feelings when we first got married and the surprising outlook I had on the future back then

  • Our reflections on the past year of our lives

  • How we’ve brought more fun into our lives by individually pursuing passions we each cared about long before we met

  • What we’re looking forward to as we head into our 28th year together

16 Mar 202265. New Lingerie Isn't Going To Help00:24:39

Do you want to spend more time with your partner, believing it will contribute to you both feeling desire, and feeling desire for one another? Are you feeling numb, disconnected, and lacking the intimacy your marriage once had?

Newsflash: going on a fancy vacation, getting new lingerie, getting your hair done, and/or losing a few pounds will NOT fix the problem. Those are short-term, external, temporary adjustments which won’t make a big difference.

If you want to revive your connection, it’s necessary to make changes on the inside. Personal development, self-awareness, noticing when you’re being reactive, being more accepting of yourself and your partner–that’s what’ it takes to create the juicy connection and intimacy you’re looking for.

What is it that creates happiness in relationships?

What do you need to put your attention on in order to experience more happiness?

Those are the questions I’m exploring in season 2 of The Intimate Marriage Podcast.

Explore them with me by considering for yourself:

  • What are your own thoughts about being happy in your relationship?
  • What are your assumptions about how it works?
  • What have you been telling yourself you need, in order to be happy?

Once you identify the stories you’ve been telling yourself, it’s much easier to dismantle them and step into what you really need in order to enjoy your life.

19 Oct 202296. When Your Complaints Become Desires00:21:25

Your complaints can become desires.  Oftentimes, however, when I talk to couples about challenges in their relationship, no matter the issue, there is one common theme: one of them wants the other to make a change. When the partner stays the same, they inevitably respond with resentment. This is the cycle that happens no matter what the issue is. Whether it’s about sex, parenting, work, or anything else, this is the pattern that plays out.

In this episode, you’ll hear detailed examples of 3 real-life couples I’ve worked with:

  • A couple who was fighting constantly
  • A couple who had a non-existent sex life
  • A couple where he was working too much and she felt he needed to be more present in their marriage

On top of all that, she is also a wife of 15 years and mom to four children. • When we prioritize certain needs or desires in a relationship, the method will not matter as much as the outcome.
  • Bring all of yourself to your relationship. Never try to bury your hopes or dreams in order to avoid conflict.

08 Dec 202153. Talking With Your Spouse About Couples Coaching00:25:14

Oftentimes, when we ask our spouses for something, it can lead to disappointment, frustration and feeling that your spouse doesn’t care about your wants and needs. On this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, I’m sharing four steps to use to improve communication when asking your partner for what you want, using the example of couples coaching. This is not a method to manipulate your partner. Rather, it’s a way to improve communication by respecting your partner’s experience while simultaneously establishing the importance of your desires, and ultimately getting what you want.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • [00:48] How to ask for what you want
  • [03:56] Scenarios when a partner is seeking couples coaching
  • [10:30] Step 1: Start with an opt-in
  • [13:18] Step 2: Affirm your marriage
  • [14:48] Step 3: Share areas of improvement within your marriage
  • [16:27] Step 4: Introduce Alexandra and couples coaching
  • [16:51] Tips for how to communicate with your spouse
  • [18:23] Another option for improving communication and your marriage
  • [20:59] Reviewing the four steps plus how these steps can improve other conversations your and your partners have about your life together

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Today’s episode discusses how to tell your spouse what you want. I specifically talk about how to communicate about couples coaching, but the tips shared can be applied to many other areas in marriage.
  • Start by getting an opt-in, meaning you want your partner to have a choice in starting the conversation.
  • Affirm your spouse and marriage in a genuine way. Share specific things that you enjoy about your spouse and your marriage.
  • Transition to asking how your marriage could be better. Share specific areas that you think need attention or improvement, and ask your spouse if they agree.
  • Share that couples coaching is a good way to create positive change.
  • If your spouse still says no to couples coaching, try asking if they will participate in a 15 minute call with me. Oftentimes, a quick call will show them that I'm not committed to doing things the way you’ve described. I'm committed to doing things in a way that works for both of you..

10 Aug 202286. Medicine & Marriage with Dr. Pranay Parikh00:45:14

When I became an entrepreneur, integrating my entrepreneur self and my physician self was complicated. I knew how to be either one, but being both didn’t come naturally—I felt pulled in opposite directions.

But I knew I had to figure out how to be both a physician and a coach. And how to be a wife and an entrepreneur. Bringing our whole multi-passionate selves to something is part of creating successful careers and satisfying relationships!

In today’s episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, I have a wonderful conversation with Dr. Pranay Parikh about bringing all parts of ourselves to a marriage (especially as multi-passionate people). We discuss the way his marriage developed alongside his career as a medical doctor and now, a real estate investor and entrepreneur.

Multi-passionate and looking for ways to improve your relationship? This one’s for you!

We discuss:

  • Dr. Parikh’s unconventional journey to medicine
  • Learning how to bring your whole self to your relationship
  • Why Dr. Parikh is actually grateful for a rejection in his career
  • How medicine has played a role in his marriage
  • The dichotomy between safety & security, and freedom & autonomy (and how it could be affecting your relationship)
  • And a lot more…

03 May 2023124. Constructive Conflict: How We Can All Resolve Conflict Productively Today and Start Dismantling Racism For The Future | w/ Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle00:52:03

In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, is joined by Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle, a conflict resolution strategist. Conflict is inevitable and Lynne talks about how she helps people engage in constructive conflict, instead of running from it.

In this conversation the focus is on conflict in marriage, and in the workplace, between any two people and specifically interracial couples. Lynne recommends people engage in conversations with those they are in conflict with, aiming to be vulnerable and staying open to listening. She describes her program, On the Matter of Race, which was created to teach white people about racism and how to dismantle it. The program was inspired by a request from two white women who wanted to understand the experiences of people of color, and how to be effective allies. Lynne clearly articulates the need for white people to understand their role in addressing and dismantling racism and has devoted her life to helping make that happen, at both the personal and societal levels.

Also in this episode:

  • Why conflict presents an opportunity
  • Why we are scared of conflict
  • Racism and interracial marriages
  • The merging of the present moment and personal history
  • Dr. Lynne’s program called “On The Matter Of Race”
  • Why racism is global
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • How to be an ally to others in the workplace

About Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle

Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle is a conflict resolution strategist, facilitator, speaker, and coach. In addition, she is the author of the best-seller, “Closing Conflict for Leaders: How to Be a Bold Leader and Develop a Kick-Ass, High-Functioning, Happy AF Team”. In many circles, she is known as The Conflict Closer, not just because she helps leaders gain the skills they need to dig deep and finally close the door on those conflicts that have been plaguing their business for too long, but also because she helps bring conflict closer. She helps you bring conflict close enough to examine its roots, the fruits of it, and the long-lasting effects it has on your business and your life. She makes it less scary by helping you to actually see it, get to know it, and be in a relationship with it. Because it is only then that you can use it to help you and your team transform. She has helped a lot of people transform in her thirty-plus years of doing this work and that’s because, through a mix of different styles and methods, she makes it interesting and fun.

02 Nov 202298. How Masculine-Feminine Polarity Teachings Undermine Intimacy00:25:27

Implementing masculine and feminine polarity teachings prohibits the cultivation of uncompromising intimacy, because they place you in a particular role that inhibits the expression who you really are. This is an outdated view on relationships and ultimately undermines the idea that the tension between “masculine” and “feminine” ways of being creates erotic chemistry in a relationship. This usually is understood to mean that having a man embody masculine energy and a woman embody feminine energy (in a heteronormative relationship) will result in a wonderful marriage.  It’s far more important to focus on your own authenticity and self-expression, rather than taking on a particular gender role.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • How masculine and feminine roles have changed over the decades (including examples from my own relatives)
  • Why I believe that masculine and feminine polarity teachings are extremely restrictive
  • My client, Suzanne, who was hesitant to participate in coaching because she was so concerned about giving up who she is in order to fit into a “feminine” role (as she felt she would be losing herself in the process)
  • When masculine and feminine polarity teachings ARE helpful in an intimate marriage
