13 Jul 2023 | 103 - A conversation with John Miller, Chief Empowerment Officer Agile Classrooms | 00:54:00
An opportunity to connect with John Miller of the Agile Classroom, a next-generation learning framework, with a student-centered approach, emphasizing collaboration, communication, self-organization, and social skills . We look at the Agile classrooms approach focusing on real-world approaches that the most innovative companies in the world use brought to a classroom setting. What the structures, workflows and pedagogic strategies for educators to consider when working with this framework. About John Miller I had worked for years as an Education Technology Director for a school district, which as a whole, wanted to move towards integrating 21st century skills within the curriculum. But what we found was that we could not change the way students learn, without first changing and modeling these 21st-century skills in the staff and teaching methods themselves. Using Agile, I spearheaded an innovative and engaging way to organize workflows with self-managed teams and quick feedback, creating a healthy and productive workplace culture that allowed for growth and prosperity. John is a Certified Scrum Trainer, Certified Enterprise Coach®, Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, ICF Associate Certified Coach, Spiral Dynamics Integral Level 2, and a Project Management Professional. When not focused on work, John loves to surf (well, wiping out more than actually surfing), spend time with his family and 2 daughters, volunteer as a life coach for students, and make insanely delicious drinking chocolates.

15 Oct 2022 | 81 - A conversation with Ashley Sawyer and Kelley McKenna, International Educators at Saigon South International School | 00:56:37
In this conversation with Ashley and Kelley, we explore transitions. They will share the learnings from their respective experiences transitioning and moving from a European International School to a South East Asian international school. Hear about the challenges and opportunities, and how doing this during COVID brought about new understanding of transitions. About Ashley Sawyer
My name is Ashley Sawyer and this is my first year at Saigon South International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I am an Elementary Classroom Teacher and previously taught at the International School of Luxembourg for five years. Luxembourg introduced me to my interest in middle level leadership where I served as a Grade Level Leader and Literacy Leader. I look forward to holding the Literacy position on our Intellectual Team for next year in Saigon. My teaching career first began in the states of Oklahoma (Edmond) and Washington (Seattle). I am passionate about designing learning experiences that include student voice and choice. I am always looking to grow my skills as an inquiry teacher.

About Kelley McKenna
My name is Kelley McKenna and I am currently a Middle School PE teacher and Personal Development Lead at Saigon South International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This August, I will relocate with my soon to be husband our dog Sami to Bangkok, where I will be the Associate Athletics Director at ISB Bangkok. Prior to working in Vietnam, I spent 9 years working at the International School of Brussels in Belgium, where I was a Middle School PE teacher, Personal Learning Coordinator and Special Olympics Coordinator, as well as a coach of a variety of different sports ranging from U-14 to Varsity. I am passionate about inclusion, sports and providing students with meaningful opportunities to discover and develop their interests.
My international journey began at the age of three when my family moved to Singapore and it was through my experiences at SAS, AISBudapest and ISB Brussels that led me to pursue a career in international education. After receiving my Bachelors of Arts in both Elementary Education and Human Development and a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology from Boston College, I have found that “home” for me is in international school communities.

24 Sep 2021 | 54 - A conversation with Lawrence Tijjani - Happy2Host Web Design Agency | Founder of Just A Guy | Former Computing teacher | 00:45:25
In this episode, Lawrence shares running a London-based Web Design and Development Agency called Happy2Host, and founding Just a Guy, a social enterprise that offers a whole range of services to help 14-25-year-olds navigate their way through life. Exploring the journey of an educator to social entrepreneur and design agency founder happy2host.com and justaguy.co.uk
About Lawrence Tijjani
Lawrence has been involved in Education for over 10 years, he began as a Computing teacher, progressed to Strategic IT Lead and later Head of Faculty. He introduced and developed a successful Computing curriculum at KS3 through to A-level, co-ordinated the implementation of IT within a new build and introduced and implemented the use of G-Suite for Education across his school. Lawrence was able to forge excellent relationships with students, staff and parents as a pastoral lead, which is where he honed his ability to engage others.
Lawrence left classroom teaching four years ago to take up an exciting IT consultancy role supporting schools with the use and development of G-suite for education, e-safety and general Edtech. As a Google for Education Certified Trainer and Innovator, he regularly delivers PD to Educators and to those beginning their own EdTech journey. Lawrence has presented at BET twice, in 2019 on Google’s Applied Digital Skills and in 2020 he led a wellbeing session ‘Solve for Happiness’.
Lawrence has a wide outreach, delivering PD sessions to Educators and their students both domestically and internationally in countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland, and Qatar. He enjoys problem-solving with different institutions, drawing on his rich and varied experiences from the classroom, as a school leader and now EdTech consultant. He is a knowledgeable, energetic, and engaging facilitator, able to motivate students and other educators to utilize the power of digital skills in the curriculum.
Lawrence uses his voice in the EdTech training community to champion diversity and inclusion. He believes that everyone should be able to have a seat at the table and works to create accessible high-quality training and opportunities for others. In 2020 he created and led an exciting mentoring program sponsored by Google Applied Digital Skills for 35 Black and Asian Educators to become certified Google Trainers, the first cohort is on track to become fully certified by July 2021. Due to the success of this program, the first of its kind, Lawrence has launched another mentoring program in partnership with Google for Education UK that provides opportunities for an even broader range of underrepresented Educators in the UK and Ireland called the Inclusive Google Trainer community.
In addition to his EdTech roles, Lawrence has a social enterprise called Just A Guy Foundation which works with disengaged and disadvantaged students. They provide a range of assemblies, mentoring, and workshops to support young people in driving their own social mobility. The Foundation has hosted successful notable events in the past such as ‘Step up with Digital Skills’ in 2019, which was a training day for 15-17-year-olds sponsored by Google Applied Digital Skills, and in 2020 an online careers fair for students that had work experience canceled due to COVID-19.

12 Feb 2022 | 63 - A conversation with Tom Adamick Project Manager at University of New Hampshire | 00:47:53
Tom shares his learnings and the power of professional learning networks, relationship building in a work setting and moving between education, corporate, international, and domestic work experiences. Tom has been a classroom teacher, a database trainer, professional learning specialist, and developer of strategic learning initiatives for Apple. He’s lived and worked in international schools in Asia and Africa as a database administrator, technology director, and tech coach. Currently Tom is an IT Project Manager at the University of New Hampshire.
About Tom Adamick
Tom started his career as a classroom teacher in California. During that time, he developed a love for using the Mac computers (remember the colorful, bubble shaped iMacs of the late ‘90s?) to enhance teaching and learning. He worked by coaching other teachers on their use in the classroom and one day wondered, “what would it be like to work for Apple?”
After some perseverance, (and perhaps borderline stalking) Tom landed a job as a database trainer and consultant with Apple. Tom spent 5 wonderful years criss-crossing the United States, working with countless schools through the change management process of a new student information system.
That role led to the opportunity to live and work overseas in Beijing China as the database administrator for the Western Academy of Beijing. What Tom thought would be one interesting year in Beijing turned into 6 wonderful years. During that time, he transitioned to a new role as a technology integrator, circling back to working with teachers to impact learning with Macs. He also met his wife, (at an art show in the artsy 798 area of Beijing) Elizabeth Meehan, while in Beijing.
From there, he moved on to the International School of Tanganyika with the multiple roles of secondary school technology director / technology integrator / Grade 10 technology teacher. The multiple roles kept him very busy.
After two years in Tanzania and six years in China, Tom and Elizabeth decided they wanted to be closer to family in the US, so with their newly adopted Tanzanian street dog named Zeiss, they repatriated to the United States. Neither Tom nor Elizabeth had jobs lined up which made for exciting times.
Utilizing old PowerSchool / Pearson contacts, Tom cobbled together a living for a few months as a contract technology trainer for Pearson which actually was a lot of fun.
A chance meet up with a former Apple colleague led to a second opportunity to work for Apple as a Professional Learning Specialist. In that role, Tom once again criss-crossed the United States, working with countless educators to turn iPads (and sometimes Macs) into meaningful learning tools. During this time Tom also began work on a masters degree in project management to help formalize a lot of the tools and techniques he’d been using over the years.
The combination of ed-tech experience and project management credentials led to the opportunity to join Apple’s Worldwide Education Strategy team where Tom worked to develop new learning initiatives for educators on a global scale. Tom is still bound by non-disclosure agreements so he can only talk in generalities about this phase of his work with Apple, but he’s very happy to talk about what he can.
After a couple of years at Apple corporate, Tom left to engage in work closer to home and is now an IT project manager for the University System of New Hampshire. He just started his sixth week in this role.
When Tom is not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their (now) two dogs. After 15 years away from competitive cycling, he is now training for gravel and cyclocross races in the New England area.

29 Apr 2021 | 44 - Nancy Squicciarni - Head of Community Relations at the International School of Luxembourg | 00:50:23
This week new co-host John Mikton leads a chat with Nancy Squicciarni, the Head of Community Relations at the International School of Luxembourg. We have a wide-ranging discussion about online teaching and learning events, and talk about #ISLLoft a hugely successful PD series of events founded and run by Nancy for International Schools worldwide.
About #ISLLoft:
Since 2010, ISL has been hosting professional learning opportunities for international educators. The school has had the privilege to collaborate with Chapters International, ECIS and Learning2. In light of COVID_19, “face to face” conferences were no longer an option. ISL decided to redesign and reformat professional learning as the ISL Virtual Learning Loft (#ISLLoft), a series of 1-hour webinars for educators. Connecting all #ISLLoft attendees’ hearts was the priority, in resonance with the concept of Head, Heart, and Hands from Transformational Learning which provided the approach when planning and organizing events.
About Nancy Lhoest-Squicciarini:
Presently, Nancy is Head of Community Relations at the International School of Luxembourg. She is a trainer for the Principals’ Training Center and the ECIS Middle Leaders Certificate Programme. Nancy is also one of the network leaders for @WomenEdBeLux, a global grassroots movement that connects aspiring and existing women leaders in education and a member of the ECIS Women in Education Special Interest Group (SIG)

27 May 2023 | 99 - Conversation with Brett Gray, Director The Ostrava International School | 00:50:56
Brett shares his journey founding and leading a small international school in Ostrava in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. As Director of the first IB Continuum World School in the country, Brett gives us insights to his struggles with the Czech state school system, and what he has been fighting for as a teacher and educational entrepreneur for over 30 years: Leading a Mission-driven school at a time of great local and global change.
About Brett Gray Brett Gray is the Founder and Director of TOIS - The Ostrava International School, Czech Republic. Armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism and French from the University of Southern California, Brett arrived in post-communist Czechoslovakia in January 1991 with plans to write news articles about the Czech transition to democracy, and teach English on the side - for perhaps 6 months, a year at most. Thirty-two years later he finds himself leading the only International Baccalaureate Continuum World School in the Czech Republic, and a devout believer in the principles of the IB as a foundation for education and support of Civil Society. Over that time, Brett has confronted the challenges and opportunities inherent in creating a truly internationally accredited school in a region that desperately needs one, but doesn’t quite understand why, including; the local, regional and national politics of Czech education; the economics of a region transitioning out of heavy industry into an unknown future; the opening of a culture and way of thinking that had been sequestered behind the Iron Curtain for over 40 years, and on and on. 26 Aug 2022 | 77 - Bonus Episode: Top 10 things to think about when starting an education podcast | 00:37:11
We recorded this extra podcast in response to several people messaging us asking about starting a podcast. The points we cover are: 1. Do you really want to do a podcast? 2. What's your goal? 3. Don't overthink it, just get going -you need to get to 50 episodes before you have really started 4. Pick what you are interested in, don't care about attracting listeners 5. Make a realistic schedule 6. Get guests - not sustainable otherwise 7. Technical stuff - Podbean, StreamYard, limited editing. Don't worry about hardware initially 8. Think about live streams - YouTube and LinkedIn 9. Get a co-host 10. Let the conversation flow and tell the guests to go slow telling their story. There is no reason your show needs to be exactly 30 minutes long.
