09 Aug 2022206: Investing in Yourself With Wildlife Artist Priya Gore and Miriam Schulman00:35:52

“When you invest in yourself, the universe invests in you.” -unknown

Becoming wildly successful does not happen by chance or accident. Success isn't something most people just stumble into, but it is something many of us can make a reality. You have to be willing to put in the work it takes to achieve greatness, and it starts with investing in yourself.

Today’s guest, Priya Gore, comes from an engineering background and a family of doctors that wouldn’t readily accept a career in art as a successful choice, and yet Priya is living life as a wildlife artist out of Australia.

Key Highlights of a Successful 6-Figure Career in Art

  • Priya invested in herself with the Artist Incubator Coaching Program 1st
  • She is allowing herself to focus on a style and genre
  • Being a niched artist allows you to build series that interests collectors
  • Having an advertising budget creates higher revenue opportunities
  • You have to focus on production 80% of the time to hit new levels of success
  • Enjoying the process is a must for the ultimate experience

“Having a niche, and really understanding what that is, and a focus style will make you more successful…”

-Miriam Schulman

In this episode, Priya unpacks in great detail how she’s been able to generate a 6-figure income selling art to collectors through the Australian based company Blue Thumb. When you consider her advertising budget, how she’s strategically increasing her individual art sales, growing her base of collectors and that she started with investing in a coaching program, her success as an artist looks less coincidental and more tactical in how she’s approaching art as a business. When you invest in yourself, other people will get behind you. This is how Priya’s advertising dollars with Blue Thumb are being maximized.

“I don't think it's about easy or challenging, but it's just about that I enjoy the process.”

-Priya Gore

10 Mar 2020080: Step Zero + Owning the Female Gaze00:31:25

I spend a lot of time talking to artists. I talk to them inside my private small group "The Artist Incubator," which is my program for artists who want to make a living with their art. I talk to art students inside the "Inspired Insiders’ Club," which is for those who want to become better artists. I also talk with artists who have taken advantage of my free Passion to Profit strategy calls.

So what I thought would be super interesting is to share about how I got started - not generally, but specifically. I’ll be sharing stories of the first time I took money for my art as a student in college.

In this podcast, you will discover...

  • What Step Zero looks like and how to get started
  • How I first took money for my art as a student in college
  • How to be empowered with choice and owning the female gaze

05 Feb 2019025: Art Mends Hearts with Susan Greif00:28:24

How can art help heal people from trauma? Susan Greif interprets drawings to help her clients form a healthier relationship with themselves and in turn a healthier relationship with others. I recently heard Susan speak at a speaker salon and was inspired by her message and her work with the children of holocaust survivors. She believes that art makes thoughts and emotions more perceptible so we can actually see our subconscious. Then we can understand what keeps us stuck and make shifts in our lives.

I notice in my students that their personalities are in their art. If they paint very tightly it’s usually because they’re uptight about something. We talk about what art can tells us about a person, her process of working with a client and why art can reveal things that talking won’t.

In this podcast, you will discover...

  • (02:58) Susan’s work with the children of holocaust survivors and intergenerational PTSD
  • (04:12) What PTSD is and how in affects people
  • (06:47) How the PTSD can be passed onto the children through epigenetics
  • (08:55) What a session with Susan looks like
  • (10:00) The art medium the clients have access to for their first drawings
  • (11:04) That the quality of the drawing does not matter
  • (11:30) An example of what anxiety can look like in a drawing
  • (12:26) What the colour choice in a drawing can mean
  • (13:28) How the session continues after the client has completed a drawing
  • (14:01) How Susan does a similar process with individuals and groups
  • (15:36) Trying to understand a picture drawn by a 57 year old woman
  • (17:05) How Susan helps her client stay in the moment with their drawings
  • (17:32) Continuing the story of the woman’s drawing
  • (20:09) Looking at relationships differently
  • (21:45) What the therapy looks like after the first drawing and how she uses journaling
  • (23:30) That drawings can reveal things that people might hide or omit in talk therapy

23 Aug 2022210: 3 Quick Cash Strategies for Creatives with Miriam Schulman00:26:37

Regardless of your creative medium, earning extra cash is a bonus no matter where you are in your artist’s journey. Nothing breaks my heart more than meeting artists that want to expand their business skills and become more successful, but are stuck because they don’t have the money to invest.

Today, I’m sharing 3 quick strategies that will help creatives earn an extra $1000-$2000. These strategies don’t require much time or money from you, just the willingness to show up and go after what you want.

3 Quick Cash Strategies That Work:

  • One-day workshop
  • Easy furniture flip
  • Calendar presale for the Fall season

The discomfort of being an artist and following your passion in a way that allows you to monetize those skills is the business side. Sales and business are a necessary part of a successful artist’s business.

In my Artist Incubator program I share the step-by-step process you’ll need to execute on even more strategies that will earn more than $10K. My programs are designed to give artists the skills and strategies they will need to grow. If you want to create an online course, I’ve also created the Course Creation Playbook, which you can download for free and get started right away.

08 Apr 2025350: Scarcity, Pricing, and the Impatience Trap00:20:53

Ever looked at a piece of your art and thought, This one is too special to sell? Or maybe you’ve had the opposite feeling—panicking because you need to make a sale, so you slash prices just to move something fast. If either of those sound familiar, you’re not alone. Artists constantly battle fear, scarcity, and impatience when it comes to pricing and selling. In this episode, we’re unpacking the emotional traps that can sabotage your success—whether it’s overpricing out of attachment, underpricing out of doubt, or rushing into sales out of fear.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Discover why overpricing can be a sign of emotional attachment, not value.

  • Explore why discounting your work trains buyers to wait for a sale.

  • Learn how impatience leads to underpricing and weakens your sales strategy.

05 Aug 2022205: Forget Perfectionism in Your Art00:18:10

What Artists Can learn from the Venice Biennale Curator

This is the world’s longest running, large scale survey of contemporary art. It is looked to locally and internationally to discover the next new great artist. The curator is Cecilia Alemani, and I went to hear her share her insights about the exhibition. She went into detail about how she made the multitude of decisions involved in this exhibit.

Hear how she uses a 3D layout and how she chose the name for the exhibition in addition to how she selected the art itself. Her strategies are something you can use as well.

Classic Artist Mistakes

On the upper west side in NYC, there’s a “flea market” every Sunday. I have checked it out a few times and I wanted to coach some of the artists so that they could sell more art and make more money.

  1. Collect addresses to follow up – this is too not be doing it.
  2. Offer to keep in touch. I had to ask an artist multiple times how I could connect with him in the future. Make it easy!

Download The Artists Profit Plan

Where Can You See Bansky in New York City

I recently saw graffiti art here in NYC by the street artist Bansky. He’s from Great Britain and in addition to his art, he is also an activist. Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based Street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation.

He combines existing items into his art. If you are in NY, you can see his art on the south wall on the Designer Show Warehouse at 79th street and Broadway. The owner of the building has taken steps to preserve the art, so hopefully it will be there for many more years.

The Art World remembers Edmonia Lewis

I love to find the most interesting stamps when I go to the post office. Nothing wrong with the flag, but why not find something more interesting? In February during black history month, I bought some stamps featuring Edmonia Lewis. Check out her story.

She was the first sculptor of African American and Native American (Mississauga) descent to achieve international recognition. Her father was Black, and her mother was Chippewa (Ojibwa) Indian.

She has a fascinating life story and despite a number of setbacks she never stopped creating art. You’ll be inspired by her story and her tenacity.

Forget Perfectionism in Your Art

Let’s talk about the deliberate mistake. In many handmade Persian rugs and carpets, you will discover the deliberate mistake. Followers of Islam believe only Allah makes things perfectly, and therefore to weave a perfect rug or carpet would be an offence to God.

If you are plagued with perfectionism, or find yourself being hyper critical of your work, I have a resource to help. Don’t allow your inner critic stop you from creating or keep you from promoting your artwork.

12 Feb 2019026: Banish Your Inner Critic with Denise Jacobs00:40:23

We all experience the harshness of our inner critic and the struggle to sustain our creativity though the noise. From an early age we learn that we should be perfect and flawless. But the truth is our flaws make us human and whole. And in turn make our art more interesting.

I am excited to talk to Denise Jacobs who is a guru on quieting your inner critic. A speaker, author and creativity evangelist, she speaks at conferences and consults with companies worldwide. She helps individuals and companies unleash their creativity by banishing their inner critic and hacking their creative minds. She is the author of the book Banish Your Inner Critic.

Hear about what the inner critic is and why it is a universal struggle. We talk about the 3 tools we naturally have that can help, strategies to reduce the impact of the criticism and how sometimes the criticisms of others can unlock our secret superpowers.

In this podcast, you will discover...

  • (04:07) The moment Denise realized she was creative and establishing a career in graphic designers
  • (06:23) How if you have a certain trait, people often have expectations of you
  • (07:46) How sometimes Denise and I downplay our skills and experience
  • (11:40) Defining what the inner critic is
  • (15:25) That we naturally have tools which can help us handle the inner critic
  • (15:54) The first tool: Neural Plasticity
  • (16:57) The second tool: Mindfulness
  • (18:39) The third tool: Self Compassion
  • (19:20) Giving your inner critic a name
  • (19:57) Giving your inner critic a backstory
  • (23:41) How Denise sometimes gets people to draw their inner critic
  • (25:14) The benefits to working with your non dominant handling
  • (27:10) A story about uncovering your strengths by looking at your criticisms
  • (31:35) How Denise put herself into environment where that trait that was viewed as an asset rather than a detriment
  • (33:11) That it’s helpful to examine traits your are afraid of and find a place where they are an advantage
  • (33:37) The idea of ‘Your Uniqueness Advantage’
  • (34:46) That you can get to a place where your inner critic is less loud

06 Jun 2023261: 7 Steps to Awaken Your Creative Potential00:24:20

When you set a goal, you're using the conscious part of your brain, which is about 2 to 3% of your brain is your conscious brain. The rest of your brain is the non conscious] part. You set goals with the conscious part of the brain, but you achieve them with the non conscious part. How do you change your deeply ingrained thinking? Achieving goals is a spiritual and non-conscious exercise and there are 7 steps to achieving the life of your dreams

In this episode, I share the actions necessary to turn those dreams and goals into reality.

  • 7 steps to achieve anything you want

  • How to retrain your beliefs

  • Sample affirmations you can use

“Our thoughts about the world create emotions, and our emotional experience will drive or inhibit our actions, creating our results.” - Miriam Schulman

These 7 steps are nonlinear because you have to you take an inspired action. You have to believe new things. Sometimes, you may have to modify your goals, not to lessen them but to pivot or learn different skills to get to where you need to go. But most importantluy if you have to continue to recommit.

07 Jun 2022196: The Taboo Technique with Miriam Schulman00:20:14
Let’s talk about the dirty secret most professional artists don’t want you to know about. Before you go any further, it’s important to note that this episode isn’t about shaming or challenging anyone’s talents or skills as a portrait artist. It’s about giving you the inspiration you need to try a new medium of art with a skill that can be developed with time and practice.

Using photography, projectors, and tracing is a secret most portrait artists won’t talk about, but it’s been used by artists in some form since as early as the 1600s, if not earlier.

In this episode, I share how famous artists such as Johannes Vermeer, who painted The Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Norman Rockwell, an American painter known for his illustrations, also used photography and projection to create portraits.

I am convinced that watercolor is the medium for creating portraits, and if you’ve never done so before, my Watercolor Portrait Academy gets into more details. You can watch me paint, and you can learn how I use these techniques to create amazing portraits.

Knowing this taboo technique is a game-changer for so many people. A few things I think you’ll need to know about watercolor and this artist's secret is:

  • There is no shame in using these techniques to create your own portraits
  • You can totally elevate your skill level and confidence
  • Using these techniques is a creative art of its own

“By calling out these other artists is not to shame anybody [...], but to let you know there's no shame in doing this. There's no shame in using photography and your art.” -Miriam Schulman

11 Apr 2023253: Uncovering Your Personal Style with Judith Gaton00:35:33

Let's get real for a moment - have you ever considered how the underwear you wear affects your overall confidence and presentation to the world?  You and I know that self-expression and confidence are key to success in our creative endeavors.

Joining us in this episode is personal stylist, certified life coach, and former lawyer, Judith Gaton. She’s also the author of How to be a F*cking Lady: A Modern Guide to Being Charming & Fierce AF. She lives by the motto that confident women leave legacies, and her life’s work is centered all around helping women find their confidence so they can leave their impact on the world.

So how much can actually be said about undergarments? Well, a lot as it turns out. Here are just three of the points Judith teaches us about in this episode:

  • The importance of underwear as foundational pieces

  • The value we assign to things we buy for ourselves

  • Finding your personal style and defining how you want to present yourself to the world

“For my clients, a lot of them forget they’re not a head floating around in the world. They are a head that requires a body to be fully functioning and comfortable in order to do whatever is their work in the world” - Judith Gaton

When you take the time to just stand still and assess how you’re feeling, as Judith said, you’ll find a treasure trove of information. It can be an uncomfortable hairstyle, ill-fitting undergarments, or just how the clothes you wear don’t feel like you.

14 Feb 2023245: Think Like an Abundant Artist00:24:06

One of the biggest concerns of artists is pricing. What is the value of my art? Am I selling too high? Will anyone pay for this? And a lot of times, artists sell their art too low. The problem is whenever art is priced too low, it rings alarm bells in buyer’s mind and makes them ask “What’s wrong with it? Why is it too low? Is this real?”

“Not all buyers are looking for what’s cheapest, or even what’s most popular. A conscious consumer may care more about a company’s alignment with their values.” - Miriam Schulman

People are willing to pay for art and the value they see in it. And for us to be comfortable with charging for our art, we need to have a mindset shift around pricing.

Here are some things you might be wondering:

  • How to scale art and what sizes sell best?

  • How did the pandemic and the recession affect art sales??

  • Is it too late to start an art career?

When buyers buy art, they aren’t just paying for the piece. They are paying for the story, the fantasy, and the connection that comes with the piece. In fact, the recent global crises just further reminded people how much they want that escape and connection, and this is a good thing for artists. When you talk about your art, whether it’s on your website, in emails, or directly, in person, tell stories. Talk about your process, why you create art and the story behind each piece. Also, tell them stories of your past clients, and how they were able to connect with your art. You’ll never know which ones they’ll be able to connect with.

And never stop creating art. The world is always in need of more art.

26 Aug 2022211: What We Can Learn from the Old Masters00:23:23

What Can We Learn From the Masters?

How do we deal with the pain in the world and still carry on? I know it feels like we’re living during one of the most challenging times, but the truth is, there has always been chaos and pain and heartache in the world.

When you feel down, poetry may help. Listen to hear the poem Musee des Beaux Arts by W. H. Auden for a bit of inspiration.

Declare Your Identity as an Artist

Impostor syndrome. Who am I to write a book or sell my art? I’ve been there, and I also realized I could figure it out.

If you are struggling to call yourself an artist here’s what I want you to do. Declare it to everyone! Share this from a place of connection. When you practice showing up in the world as an artist you begin to re-write your story.

What Kinds of Online Classes Can You Create as an Artist

When you are starting out in the digital course world, it’s overwhelming. There are so many options, so I recommend starting with these 3 concepts:

  • A starter course like Watercolor Secrets

  • A signature course like Watercolor Portrait Academy

This is the framework I used to grow my business. I have a great resource to help you get started: The Course Creator Starter Kit

Discover the 9 Tools Recommended by Top Artists to Create Stunning Art Videos

When I first started creating art video tutorials, I was overwhelmed with all the options. I asked for help to get the right set up that works for me. After 10 years, I’ve streamlined things and I’m sharing them with you today.

  1. Digital Camcorder with a rotating view finder
  2. Tripod with multi-angle rotation
  3. Webcam for your laptop or PC
  4. Microphone

Fight for Your Art Dreams

100 years ago today, the 19th amendment was signed giving women the right to vote. It’s also the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”

There are numerous women artists that inspire me. I can name so many just off the top of my head so was disappointing to hear that less than 10% of the art at the MOMA were by women artists. That was in 2002, and sadly it hasn’t changed much in the past 20 years.

We don’t have to be a statistic. We can fight. I believe in you, in your art, and your dream.

27 Dec 2022238: An Artist's Guide to NFTs with Capucine Jenkins and Miriam Schulman00:45:14

NFTs are bridging the gap between art and technology but many artists (including myself) still don’t quite understand what they are and how to do them. In this episode our inspiration is NFT art and its ability to help us explore another stream of income and a look into the future. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scams circulating the internet praying on artists enticing them with quick money for an NFT of their work.

Luckily, our guest, Capucine Jenkins, curator of digital art and NFTs at Saatchi Art is here to demystify the process for us. Class is in session and she’s giving us the NFT 101 class so that you can see the opportunities that exist even if you’re a traditional artist.

“Much of our goal and objective really is to help artists help growing artists and definitely emerging artists make a livelihood for themselves.” - Capucine Jenkins

Everything you’ll need to start considering NFT art:

  • NFTs are so much more than JPGs
  • You don’t have to be a digital artist to sell NFTs
  • Art and technology don’t have to be in contrast of each other
  • NFTs are really about intellectual property and assets that allow you control as an artist

Capucine explains the opposing worlds of art before this NFT technology exploded in popularity, and the digital world that now exists for artists to live and thrive in. Capucine says that NFTs give you “a mid-tier place …to be able to have a livelihood.” Because it exists on a technology called the blockchain, there is no middle man, and your royalties, rights as an artist, and proper compensations are baked into these digital contracts called smart contracts.

“There's this understanding that art and tech are in contrast, or even in conflict with each other, when I think NFT's actually do the job of bridging that gap.” - Capucine Jenkins

06 Feb 2024292: The Cockroach of Marketing00:34:45

If you were to scroll through my Instagram, you would be seeing a lot of cat pictures and videos. Now, I’ve always thought that cats were just really popular these days but it turns out that these apps actually built my feed according to an algorithm that knows how much I like cats! My friends (who are dog people) have feeds filled with.. you guessed it…cute puppies. After years of building a following on social media, it can be discouraging to learn that these platforms are algorithm based, not follower based. Tune into this episode to learn the ONE platform that still shows all your content to your followers.

In this episode, you’ll:

  • Learn why social media is best for connecting

  • Discover marketing trends that actually work, especially for artists

  • Explore strategies that are fitting for what you’re selling

14 Mar 2023249: 14 Ways to Use ChatGPT in your Art Business with Jen Lehner00:41:30

The buzz around AI, specifically ChatGPT, has been getting louder over the past few months. People are discovering more ways they can use this new technology in everyday tasks. Joining me today to talk about AI and ChatGPT is Jen Lehner.

Jen is a digital marketing and systems strategist. She teaches entrepreneurs how to grow their audience and monetize with social media, digital tools, and strategic outsourcing.

Jen describes ChatGPT as an artificial intelligence platform that’s been trained up to 2021 with knowledge of the world that you can have a conversation with.

“For anybody who’s hearing about this for the first time, I think the way to think about this is a way to enhance what we’re doing.” - Jen Lehner

How can we use AI to save time? Here are some uses Jen talks about more about:

  • AI can significantly cut down the hours when we use it to generate ideas, examples, and first drafts.

  • AI can help you start tasks you dread doing, like that email that you don’t want to send.

  • AI can be fun. Use it to write a story Godfather style. Use it to give instructions on how to remove peanut butter from a VCR sounding like the King James Version of the Bible.

AI can help you with job postings, legal documents, writing or correcting code, grammar and spell checks, rewrites, ideas and strategies for ads, headlines and subject lines, webinar ideas, topic outlines, titles, creative and engaging art descriptions, SEO keywords, and many other things.

As we’re watching the rise of AI and how it develops in real-time, just remember that it’s still just a tool. It requires knowledge and creativity to use. And no matter how human-like its outputs are, AI can never be creative or have new ideas.

05 Jul 2022200: Radical Reinvention with Miriam Schulman00:25:43

Reinventing yourself can sound intimidating, it may sound like betrayal on some level, and it can even feel inauthentic to some. To others, reinvention is an opportunity for rebirth and realizing your full potential.

People often reinvent themselves to let go of what no longer serves them, get to new heights of success, and shed what they don’t like about themselves. Reinvention is something you can totally embrace as an artist and a creative as you grow in skill and move through different phases of your life.

“Commit to reinvent yourself, to know that real growth happens in a place of discomfort.” Les Brown

Inspiration Place Podcast is celebrating its 200th episode with a Free Coaching Podcast Party!  To help celebrate this occasion, leave a review for Inspiration Place Podcast on your favorite podcasting app, take a screenshot and fill out a short form and submit a coaching question for me by July 15, 2022. You may be one of the 20 winners selected to win an Amazon Gift Card. Everyone who submits a review will be invited to the Free Coaching Podcast Party.

In this episode, I'm sharing my story of radical reinvention. Moving several times in my childhood created the desire, the need, and the opportunity to reinvent who I was and how I was showing up for others, and most importantly for myself.

Reinvention is a tool available to you at any time:

  • Declaring yourself an artist and believing it for yourself
  • Embracing your inner weirdo and not vilifying what makes you different
  • Navigating the different phases of life, pain, and discomfort

“This new identity explained my unique ability to look at ordinary things and see something that others didn't.” -Miriam Schulman

28 Jun 2022199: World Watercolor Month with Charlie O’Shields and Miriam Schulman00:41:54

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Pablo Picasso

Whether this is a proven fact or not is irrelevant. What matters is that there is an innate connection between children and creativity in all forms. Whether it’s through paint, imagination, or creative play in a universe far, far away, there is an inner child in each of us that could help our creative juices and inspire in new ways.

“Treat your inner child well and make sure you give it plenty of things to keep its imagination growing” -Charlie O’Shields

Today’s guest, Charlie O’Shields is a Creative Director by day with side hobbies and projects that absolutely light up the world. He started a blog and a 2000-day art journey in 2015 that became the Doodlewash blog and so much more. He’s authored multiple books helping people connect to their inner child and “create like a kid again.” Charlie also founded Watercolor month which is a nonprofit 31-day challenge and community dedicated to watercolor painting.

In addition to being all around amazing, Charlie shares:

  • How to show up, practice, and share your work
  • Encouraging people to get creative
  • How Happy Hour turned into much more than art
  • The inspiration for World Watercolor Month in July

“It's just a matter of doing creative things on a regular basis. And it's not just doing them, it's a practice, everything in life is a practice. - Charlie O’Shields

Even if art is your business and something you take seriously, Charlie echoes a great reminder that adding fun into your work and a bit of joy goes a long way for the people that see it and feel it in your art. Remember to give your inner child the space it needs to play, stay creative, and keep imagining.

14 Aug 2018000: Finding Your Signature Style in Art, Music or Business with Jason van Orden00:27:43

Today, we are talking about what it means to have a signature style and express your voice whether that is in business, music or art. In this episode, you’ll get a sneak preview of future episodes. With me today, I have my mentor Jason Van Orden.

On this episode, we will be discussing what it means to express your voice and how to create a style that is unique to you. The things that people think are wrong about themselves makes them right and makes them different. When creating your voice, it’s important to talk to people who do value what it is that you do and create. Have conversations with other artists about your work and their work. You will discover your voice by doing, by putting yourself out there. Learn more about these topics in this episode of Inspiration Place Podcast.

In this podcast, you will discover...

  • How to find your signature voice in art, music and business
  • why artists struggle to find their voice
  • Why trying on different styles is part of the artistic tradition
  • How to create and use feedback loops
  • Why we value less what feels easy rather than those that feel difficult

31 Jan 2023243: Artpreneur is Born with Miriam Schulman00:30:03

Artpreneur is officially out in the stores and you can now go out and grab your own copy.

In celebration of this launch, I did something different for this episode. Today’s guests are artists just like you. With varied backgrounds and experiences, they ask their questions, share their stories while I share mine and a couple of excerpts from my book. It’s a fun, inspiring, conversation that I’m sure you’ll appreciate.

Here are some excerpts I share in this episode:

Chapter 1 “Choose to Believe”

There’s an artist in each of us wanting to break free. Your muse is tired of staying quiet and waiting for you to feel ready. Take the next step and dream bigger. You are enough. You are more than capable.

Chapter 3 “Start Before You’re Ready”

Understand that regardless of the kind of art you create… you must love your art so fiercely that you truly feel the world will miss out if they don’t want what you’re offering.

Chapter 10 “Listen to Understand”

This chapter details a 9-step process for selling, both for in-person and online selling. There’s also an Overcoming Objections Chart, which has actions steps and scripts you can use when you encounter objections.

“Your muse is tired of staying quiet and waiting for you to feel ready” - Miriam Schulman

Chapter 12 “Why Your Art Matters”

Your art matters in so many ways beyond what selling it will do for you professionally. Art helps us process the world around us and serves both a spiritual and social function, not unlike religion.

I hope this episode will encourage you to pursue your art and improve your business. Know that you can do it, that you’re capable, and you have what it takes. Stay inspired!

12 Apr 2022188: How to Stand Out and Get Your Art Noticed with Jennifer Kem and Miriam Schulman00:23:46

Building your art business gets stressful real fast when it takes you beyond the comfort of creating art. Still, marketing, sales, and engagement are a necessity for any person building a business.

Why should you know your brand archetype as an artist? You have your own style and preferred medium of art, so is branding and archetypes really important? After all, you’re possibly running ads, you're staying on top of social media posts, and you have your own art collections for sale and available for purchase. Maybe you’ve even set up a few funnels to grow your business.

Jennifer Kem is the creator of Master Brand. While she agrees that marketing is part of branding, she also distinguishes why branding is more about your messaging.

“The brand is your art, and the rest is science. Marketing is a science, sales is a science, but your brand is the soul of how you're presenting yourself in the world.”

-Jennifer Kem

Branding for Artists and Creatives 101:

  • What branding is and isn’t
  • How artists should think about branding
  • What is an archetype
  • What are brand archetypes
  • Dominant, intrinsic, intuitive, and creator archetypes you should know

01 Nov 2022230: Beautiful Writers with Linda Sivertsen and Miriam Schulman00:36:39

Start imaging your roadmap to becoming an author with insights and writing inspiration from my guest, Linda Sivertsen. She’s joining us to reveal how she helps writers navigate the beauty of writing a book and getting book proposals.

“I just happen to be one of those freaky weird people who just loves the selling process. I love book proposals.” -Linda Sivertsen

What we’re unpacking in this episode:

  • The birthing process of writing
  • Working with publishers and agents
  • Selling your book before you write it

There’s so much to unpack in the book writing process. It’s part beautiful, part painful, and part scary. Should you write a book, should you not write a book? One of the points Linda touches on is the pain of seeing someone die with the regret of not having written their story. Her beautiful reminder is to listen to your higher self when it comes to writing. If there’s an internal nudge and inner voice saying to write this book, whatever it is, listen!

“If you have the ache, you have what it takes to write.” -Linda Sivertsen

Today, I've invited Cailen Ascher, an expert in how to design your ideal week whether that means making more time for art or your family, to the podcast. Cailen discovered that she could get more done in less time after the reality of childcare limited her work hours to just three days a week. Now, we’ve recently had on Mike Michalowicz whose new book Clockwork, how to design your business to run itself as well as Alex Pang, whose research actually proves that you DO get more done by working less, so Cailen's message fits in perfectly with all that we’ve been talking about. Key ideas Matthew makes digestible and simple enough to implement:

  • Make your sleep sacred and honor the rest you need
  • Make the most of your work by repurposing your pieces
  • Be thoughtful about what you spend your time on
  • Consult your future self to make the best daily decisions

“I think we solve a lot of problems unconsciously when we allow those problems to move to the back.” -Matthew Dicks

Matthew's approach is extremely well thought out. Coming close to a near-death experience has given him the motivation and perspective he needs to emphasize making the best of every day, every decision, and what he chooses to make time for.

In the next part of this interview, Matthew will unpack eating a compliment sandwich, the enemies list, and why be a criminal and carry a burglar bag.

04 Apr 2023252: 5 Strategies to Build Your Audience and Your Network with Mike Kim00:42:37

We’re all faced with the power and impact of relationships at some point in our lives, both personally and professionally. I think as artists, we’re usually introverted, and fostering relationships can present a challenge. But why are relationships so important?

Mike Kim is a business coach and marketing strategist who specializes in personal branding, product launch strategies, and copywriting. He’s the author of You Are the Brand and host of the podcast with the same title.

“Relationships are rocket ships. You can only go so far on your own.” - Mike Kim

Mike approaches marketing and establishing oneself by connecting and building relationships with people. In his book, he shared several strategies for building relationships. Here are three he talks about more in-depth in this episode:

  • Become someone else’s case study.

  • Invest in more exclusive opportunities.

  • The epic breakfast.

“It’s surprising how quickly your circles can change if you’re just a recommendable person.” - Mike Kim

One of Mike’s best bits of wisdom is to work on yourself to become someone who’s recommendable. Be someone who’s easy-going, easy to talk to, and easy to talk about (even when you’re not in the room!). Be someone who brings people together. The one who introduces amazing relationships.

When you come from a place of generosity, you lift others up, and advocate for them, you’ll be surprised by the quality of relationships you’ll easily build.
