07 Oct 2024This Sh*t Will K*ll You – Militainment Watchalong Series: Part 4 – E08700:45:35

Our Watchalong series on ‘Militainment’ continues as we return to the pre-and-post-9/11 era of propaganda. With Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor (2001) & Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down (2002), one key elements of Militainment stands above the rest: This sh*t will kill you.

Now, you can pause and save this episode as a download if you want to go watch the movies first, or you can catch them after our conversation and see the film through a different lens.

If you’d like to stream today’s movies, use the links below or rent the movies on your favorite VOD service.

As a reminder, we’re looking critically at propaganda, Militainment, and the influence that movies subliminally and blatantly have on us as viewers. That doesn’t mean they’re bad movies (we love every movie on the list), but it does mean we need to understand the biases and beliefs that can be fostered through the powerful mediums of film, television, song, spoken, and written word.

We hope you enjoy today’s episode, and below you’ll find our list of movies and where to watch each one. Be sure to comment and answer our questions in the poll on Spotify, and DM us on Instagram (@theindiemagandpod) with what you think of our episodes, and our series. We’d love to hear what you think, and may include answers and responses from listeners on the next episode.

18 Dec 2024The Middle Way is THE WAY – Part III – Papal Ponderings Watchalong Series – E10101:05:25

We’re continuing our Papal Ponderings Watchalong series with a two HBO series that reshaped the way we view the Papacy. First we look at Jude Law in The Young Pope (2016), then move along to John Malkovich in The New Pope (2020).

In this series, we’re looking at Catholicism in the media over the past two decades from its scandals and front page stories to its steamy fictions and wily figures. We began this series around the release of Conclave, a 2024 film released in late October, which should be leaving theaters for PVOD and streaming soon. Conclave has already been nominated for a few awards, including a Golden Globe, and it is expected to receive attention for the Oscars as well.

We hope that you enjoy today’s episode, and you will find the below you’ll find our list of the series we discussed today, the movies from last week, and what we’re discussing on the next episode.

Be sure to comment and answer our questions in the poll on Spotify, and DM us with what you think of our episodes, and we’d love to include answers and responses from listeners on the next episode.

07 Aug 2024DoP in Buenos Aires, Mateo Sanchez Luna, ADF – E07500:49:27

A Director of Photography, or DP, is as one site puts it, "the person responsible for creating the look of a film." Often referred to a cinematographer, the DP can be guiding the look of every shot, and bringing the vision of a director to life. We discussed how Mateo got started in the industry, his mentors and teachers along the way, and what work looks like for a DP in Buenos Aires.

After the interview, Madison and Tristan discuss some of the movies and shows they've been watching, including Bedazzled, Holes, and more.

With an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7.6/10 on IMDB, and $481.8M worldwide at the box office, it's no wonder this film kicked off the trilogy-turned-cinematic universe that's just released its fourth film.

10 Jul 2024Generative Musician, Satyam Shekhar Jha – E06700:50:56

This week on The Indie Magazine Podcast, we get to talk with Satyam Shekhar Jha, a New York City-based Generative AI Composer and Musician. He has a unique perspective as a current STEM student who's found joy in the musical expression, and it was a great discussion on how generative music is changing access to that expression.

After the interview, Madison and Tristan discuss The Bikeriders, The Acolyte, and what's caught they're eye at the theaters and on the couch.

Biography:

I am Satyam Shekhar Jha.

I am a generative artist, i started with simulating physical systems and plotting their trajectories to exhibit aesthetic patterns on Python with NumPy and matplotlib. Later on I discovered TouchDesigner and started making audio-reactive videos. From a few months, I've been trying to synthesize my own sounds using Touchdesigner, meanwhile learning about music production and sound design to make it more pleasing. I plan on learning to control DMX lights too, maybe next year.

I am a Physicist, i am a full time physics Ph.D. student at Queens College, NYC. Currently I am working with Optomechanical oscillations with Prof. Deych in my 3rd year. For my paychecks i work on non-linear systems but for i own pursuits I examine various complex systems such as cellular automata, Markov processes, diffusion, molecular dynamics and fractals. M.C. Escher and many other artisits have incorporated concepts like hyperbolic geometry to expand our sense of space. I explore such analogies between aesthetics and symmetries using analytical dynamics and molecular simulations. Which led to me discovering generative art. It is something that involved coding, physics and art , all the things that I loved and lived for.

I am a friend. In my observation, some of the most humane people and my friends I've found were people who appreciated art as a medium of expression. And I'd like to find those people again. If you feel like you are one, shoot me a mail. Let's catch up!

Satyam belongs to Jamshedpur. an industrial town in Jharkhand, India. Satyam got his undergraduate and graduate degree from from a reknowned engineering college Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in BHU, Varanasi, India. Satyam was also a part of the Fine Arts Club in IIT (BHU) where he was the Joint secretary of the club handling various financial and leadership goals. He also got a diploma in sculpting from Faculty of Visual Arts, BHU, India in 2019.

He went on to do his Phd in CUNY, USA in physics. The pursuit to understand art and physics led him to discover new media arts. When he finally reached NYC in 2021 , the art world seemed lucrative and he wanted to be a part of it. But he didn't know his part in that world yet, which he is still looking for.

16 Sep 2024Intro to Militainment – Militainment Watchalong Series: Part 1 – E08100:44:09

Are you ready to join us on our next Watchalong?!? Madison and Tristan talk about a little known about and present reality in film, television, music, print, and across all mediums of media: propaganda. Military propaganda to be precise.

In this first episode, we introduce an academic term, “Militainment,” and get into some of the research on the subject, and some of the self-published cases from agencies and comms team for the U.S. armed forces.

How many movies? Which ones? Here's a list of some of the 700+ movies with DoD approval and funding.

Now, for any agents of the Dept. of Defense (DoD) or any patriotic listeners whose feathers we've just ruffled, let’s discuss how we’re looking at the subject and films.

We are critically breaking down propaganda and Militainment on our first episode. That includes the history of propaganda, how it was used in the early 20th century, the father of PR (Edward Bernays), and how propaganda was demonized and solely attributed to evil actors.

The power and influence in movies shown is both subliminal and blatant, and we should be careful not to be hypercritical and combative when discussing the power of visual and audio messaging. That said, it is important that informed viewers analyze their entertainment as much as they consume it. In that spirit, we take a look at a paper Tristan wrote in 2021 about Militainment, propaganda, and a case study break down of Independence Day and Independence Day: Resurgence.

For anyone feeling uncomfy, let’s cover a few bases first:

This series does not imply these are ‘bad movies’ by any means On the contrary, we love every movie on this list If you do not recognize and discuss the biases, beliefs, and influences in the media you consume, that is fine too! We find it increasingly important to analyze media under a lens of criticism and adoration, not one or the other

09 Feb 2024Eternal Film Productions & Cinegoth with Nikki & Alexander – E01900:46:20

This week on The Indie Magazine Podcast, we get to chat with Nikki Carmela Peters and Alexander Thomas Reinhard, the duo behind Eternal Film Productions. They discuss their chance meeting, astrological alignment, shared birthdays, love for horror, and their new genre: cinegoth. We talk about inspirations and lessons in their years producing, writing, and directing shorts, and what they're working on these days. They both have fascinating minds, 'the knack' for bringing their ideas to life, and were so fun to have on the podcast.

We wrap up the episode as Madison and Tristan discuss what we've seen recently. Madison talks about Hero (2002) with Jet Li and the masterful choreography on display, as well as rewatching Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen (2019) and we all might need to step up our fashion game. Tristan talks about two Oscar contenders, Society of the Snow (2023) and Zone of Interest (2023), and how he preferred the former's style to the latter, but both are heavy watches that need some serious reflection afterwards.

For anyone interested in writing, directing, and producing their own work, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Enjoy, share with friends and family, and stay tuned as we continue to bring you interviews with good people working on great projects!

20 Mar 2024Actor, Producer, and Writer Marvin Emetom and Shōgun Ep. 4 – E03600:57:09

This week, we had the opportunity to talk with Marvin Emetom, an Atlanta-based actor, producer, and writer. 01 Oct 2024Join to Grow – Militainment Watchalong Series: Part 3 – E08400:45:40

We’re back on our Watchalong series about ‘Militainment’, and this week Madison and Tristan are looking at the first two examples, Top Gun (1986) & Top Gun: Maverick (2022). This week’s theme is one illustrated by Maverick’s own path over the decades: Join to Grow.

27 Sep 2024Development Manager, Bobby Pedalino – E08300:58:18

We all know that one friend who says, "If I was in charge, I'd choose to make x and y instead of what's on the screen." Well folks, unlike those friends you have who work in accounting or retail, we've got someone who actually is making those kinds of decisions each and every day. For Bobby Pedalino, a romcom isn't just a good excuse to get a good cry in or cuddle up next to someone, it's at the heart of his job. He is currently a development manager at Muse Entertainment, USA. In that role he reports to a producer and wider team that develops ideas for Hallmark, Netflix, Prime, and all your favorite streaming services.

During the interview, we talk about Bobby's early life and experience with entertainment, things he wished he'd known going into college, work on set in New York City, and starting over on the development side when he moved to Los Angeles.

After the interview, Madison and Tristan finally get around to reviewing Alien Romulus. They discuss why this was one of their favorite movies of the summer, and favorite entries in the franchise.

We hope you enjoy today's episode with Bobby Pedalino! Be sure to share it with friends and anyone interested in scripted TV and film development, and movie lovers. Stick around for two of Bobby's Rap Movie Reviews.

Enjoy!

20 Sep 2024The Rule of Cool – Militainment Watchalong Series: Part 2 – E08200:53:55

We’re back on our Watchalong series about ‘Militainment’, and this week Madison and Tristan are looking at the first two examples, Transformers (2007) & Battleship (2012). We discuss the style, character backgrounds, and lines that establish a very important aspect of Militainment: THE RULE OF COOL.

20 May 2024War for the Planet of the Apes – Hot Monkey Boy Summer – E05600:25:09

Hope you brought your life jacket, it's time for War* on planet ape. *War* might be a stretch, but Hot Monkey Boy Summer continues nonetheless.

We talk about the third entry in the series, War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Before the seven-year break, we saw Woody Harrelson and Andy Serkis face-off in a gritty film that was more imprisonment and philosophical than it was filled with fighting.

This entry tops the first three movies a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, slightly dips down to a still-respectable 7.4/10 on IMDB, and a big dip at the box office to what the first film averaged, with $490.7M worldwide.

Check out today's review and catch up on this entry, now streaming on Hulu.
