07 Feb 2023A New Approach to Continuous Learning with Gustaf Nordbäck #7700:42:52

Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast by Gustaf Nordbäck, CEO of Headspring Executive. Gustaf is driven by a belief that education can change lives for good and in this episode, we explore a new approach to continuous learning.

Gustaf Nordbäck has enjoyed a 15-year career in the learning and development sector and previously worked for Rosetta Stone, where he successfully helped scale the business across Europe and Latin America, and helped to make it the UK’s biggest online language learning business.

Gustaf is now CEO of Headspring Executive, which is a joint venture between the Financial Times and IE Business School which has been founded on the principle that executive development needs to be collaborative, relevant, and measurable

Gustaf believes that it is time for businesses to take a new approach to continuous learning. Moving away from the annual training and growth mindset methodology, and into facilitator learning. Helping individuals – and the businesses they work for – to grow towards their true potential.

Let’s be honest, the last two years have demonstrated the sheer unpredictability of the business landscape. To successfully traverse the challenges that business leadership brings, it is essential that our future leaders have the tools they need to not just grow, but to thrive.

In this “A New Approach to Continuous Learningepisode with Gustaf Nordbäck on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:

  1. What do the words Human Resources mean?
  2. What is Headspring Executive trying to achieve?
  3. How is leadership different now, compared to two years ago?
  4. Are businesses doing enough to support employee growth?
  5. Why is human facilitation important in both online, and hybrid learning?
  6. What are the current challenges faced by business leaders?
  7. How can learning and development help prepare future leaders?
  8. How can we ensure L&D strategies are relevant to both current and future business environments/workplaces?
  9. What can virtual organization models do to ensure their L&D strategies succeed?
  10. What are your views on learning for the future vs the future of learning?

As AI transforms the workplace, how do we ensure technology enhances, rather than replaces, human connection? In this episode, Nick Day sits down with Kahina Ouerdane, Chief People Officer at WorkLeap, to explore the balance between AI, leadership, and human-centered talent management.

Kahina shares why she rejects the term "human resources", how WorkLeap uses tech to build more engaged and high-performing teams, and why onboarding, performance management, and leadership still require a personal touch.

She also tackles a key question: Can AI truly drive culture, trust, and inclusivity? While AI improves efficiency, there are things it can’t replace—like real conversations, emotional intelligence, and human intuition in leadership.

Embrace Equity for International Women’s Day with Jacqui Barret #80

In the episode, Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast by Jacqui Barrett, co-founder of Wider Thinking and an award-nominated Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Specialist and Keynote speaker to celebrate and discuss EDI concerning International Women's Day.

Jacqui previously spent 15 years working in television for the BBC before taking an extended career break when she had children because her mum was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimers (she was 60).

What emerged from this experience was the realisation that Jacqui knew she wanted to speak about the topics she was passionate about – such issues as sustainability, female empowerment, financial inclusion, equality and unmuted cultures. It led Jacqui to create Wider Thinking. An equity diversity and inclusion programme that enables organisations to scale EDI awareness to all people, not just senior leadership.

The platform is focused on helping people understand themselves and others, equipping everyone with skills and sensitivity to navigate the workplace, and allowing everyone to contribute.

As someone who has implemented the Wider Thinking platform into my business at JGA HR Recruitment, I invited Jacqui to join me today to talk about why it is so important that we all embrace equality for International Women's Day.

International Women's Day is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the women's rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence & abuse against women.

01 Jun 2023Dealing with Data Loss and establishing a 'data exit' strategy with Emily Curtin #9000:37:30

Dealing with Data Loss and establishing a 'data exit' strategy with Emily Curtin #90

Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast sofa by Emily Curtin, Chief Client Officer at Profusion, to discuss why it is essential that HR teams introduce a 'data exit strategy' to safeguard against the risks associated with data loss.

Let’s be honest; this risk has been exacerbated considerably by the 'Great Resignation'.

With widespread remote working and the highest-ever levels of employee turnover experienced by companies worldwide, the reality is that businesses are now at a greater risk than ever of losing valuable, sometimes mission-critical data.

HR teams can help stop this by introducing a data loss focus as part of the formalised exit interview process.

Today, Emily Curtin from Profusion will be providing us all with the simple steps HR teams can take to ensure that their data does not go with them when employees leave!

In this “Dealing with Data Loss and establishing a 'data exit' strategy” episode with Emily Curtin on The HR L&D Podcast, questions asked include:

  1. What do the words Human Resources mean to you?
  2. What is data loss?
  3. What is the risk?
  4. Why is it becoming such a big issue?
  5. What can HR teams do to try and help mitigate this risk?
  6. Any other advice on the data loss issue?
  7. How can we identify who is at risk of leaving?
  8. How can companies take a more initiative-taking approach to retention and engagement to mitigate the risks of someone leaving?
  9. Can you recap any contractual obligations a company may want to consider when protecting against data loss?
  10. If an HR leader is listening to this now and wanted to leave the audio with a plan of attack to improve the risks associated with data loss, what would you recommend would be the first steps they take?

In the episode, Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast by Rameez Kaleem, founder and director of 3R Strategy and author of the best-selling book, A Case of the Mondays.

Rameez has worked in reward for 20 years, both in-house and as a consultant, and he possesses a wealth of experience in job architecture design, bonus/sales incentives, pay structures, and equal pay.

In 2015, he founded 3R Strategy to help more organisations build a culture of trust through pay transparency - a topic of increasing conversation within payroll and HR circles.

California has just written pay transparency into law, and the cost-of-living crisis encourages more open discussions about pay, pay-rises and what peers earn.

Rameez spends his time supporting organisations with pay rewards transparency, job evaluation and architecture, pay structure design and equal pay. So, if you are keen to learn more about what pay transparency is (and isn’t) to understand how we can build a workplace culture of trust, then you are in the right place!

In this “Pay Transparency in the Workplace” episode with Rameez Kaleem on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:

  1. What do the words Human Resources mean to you?
  2. The term ‘pay transparency’ is often misunderstood as simply the act of publishing salaries. Can you tell us more?
  3. In your new book, you provide a roadmap for how pay transparency can help build trust in the workplace – could you tell us about this?
  4. Could you tell us about 3R Strategy and the work or projects you are typically involved in?
  5. How would you recommend HR professionals approach identifying pay discrimination?
  6. How has Pay benchmarking been impacted by the new world of remote working we now find ourselves in?
  7. Why do you believe it is essential that employers should always publish salary bands?
  8. Why do you think it is essential that hiring managers stop asking for current salary information during the interview process?
  9. So, the big question for people is how can we build a workplace culture of trust – what would you say to that?
  10. How does the area of performance management link to pay and performance?
  11. For employers who wish to improve employee satisfaction but are unable to improve employee salaries right now, what would you say to them?

Developing Female Talent into Leaders with Elizabeth Batalla #86

In the episode, Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast by Elizabeth Batalla, who has been in corporate for over 30 years, has lectured at various academic institutions and is the founder of The Institute for Achievement and Excellence.

Elizabeth helps women level up in nine life areas to achieve their professional and personal transformation goals to secure leadership roles and business opportunities.

She also helps companies better educate and promote their female talent. Elizabeth accomplishes this through self-paced masterclasses, tailored programs, and coaching. Her experience also drove her fantastic book, “Level Up to Move Up: The Three Forces in Achieving Excellence”.

At the moment, Liz is reaching out Diversity, Equity and Inclusion people in all sectors, especially male-dominated sectors like STEM industries, to explore how her experience can support their female talent programmes to improve performance, engagement, contribution and progression into leadership roles. Although Elizabeth’s focus is on women, her message is for everyone. That’s because Liz believes in being the change she wishes to see in the world and lives this by example.

In the Fortune 500, only 53 CEOs are female. Meanwhile, nearly half of all FTSE 250 companies lack a woman in the boardroom, and only nine female CEOs are still in the FTSE 100.  We believe businesses can and should be doing more to promote and develop female leaders in the workplace.

Today Elizabeth shares what she has learned and implemented from her own journey.

In this “Developing Female Talent into Leaders” episode with Elizabeth Batalla on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:

  1. What do the words Human Resources mean to you?
  2. Why is female leadership important?
  3. How can we create a positive impact on our women leaders of tomorrow?
  4. What can individual women do to be better prepared for leadership roles?
  5. What can companies do to support their female talent better?
  6. What are you doing to contribute to creating female leaders of tomorrow?
  7. What are your “nine life areas for success”?
  8. Judy Garland once said, “Be a first-rate version of yourself, not a second-rate version of someone else.” – tell me why this quote resonates with you?

28 Mar 2023"If you love People, HR may not be for you" with Meredith Fish #8300:39:19

In the episode, Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast by VP of People and Culture at Workramp, Meredith Fish!

Meredith possesses over 19 years of experience identifying & developing potential, and she has learned several valuable lessons during this time. Still, one stands out: companies need to be more human!

Hence, Meredith believes in weaving empowerment, belonging, and engagement in every fibre of the employee experience. It’s this vision of a workforce that makes her role as VP of People and Culture at WorkRamp so exciting, as she has the opportunity to help other organizations unlock the infinite power of lifelong learning and leading with the heart.

Meredith has grown teams from 130 employees to over 2,000, and this experience has provided her with many insights into the importance of employee experience – especially from the perspective of HR.

Meredith says she has seen the rationale of "I want to work in HR because I like people" end in a lot of disappointment and burn-out because it sets up the HR practitioner to be disappointed by the reality that not all people in the workplace are likeable, or worse, they have a deep need for everyone to like them.

So today, on the HR L&D Podcast, Meredith shares how going into HR for the wrong reasons can limit performance and keep the field of people development locked in the past – and, therefore why going into HR for the right reasons can make all the difference!

In this “If you love People, HR may not be for you” episode with Meredith Fish on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:

  1. What do the words Human Resources mean to you?
  2. You say that if you love people, then HR may not be for you. What do you mean by this?
  3. What are the consequences of people going into HR “for the wrong reasons?”
  4. How would you describe the perfect person for a career in HR?
  5. What special skills do people working in HR bring to the table?
  6. Can you tell us more about Workramp?
  7. How have common L&D practices changed?
  8. What are you most excited about regarding the progression of the HR field?
  9. How can HR leaders use L&D to help ensure people never stop learning and growing?
  10. Successful L&D requires continuous learning with others, but why?
