22 Aug 2024Ep. 228: How To Enjoy An Awesome Sober Vacation With Friends01:23:58
What do you want to know about sober travel? I just got back from Provence, where I spent two weeks with 3 sober girlfriends and we’re here to share everything you need to know to plan and enjoy an awesome sober vacation. Provence is a beautiful area of France known for its small hilltop villages, river valleys, markets, food, lavender and wine. All the wine. They’ve made wine for 2,600 years and have over 600 producers in the region.   But don’t let that scare you off! Even in an area famous for alcohol, you can travel alcohol-free and enjoy your trip so much more than you would if you were drinking.  On this sober vacation I traveled with 3 girlfriends I met in sobriety. My friend Ingrid and I are both 8 years alcohol-free, Margaret is 7 years alcohol-free and Megan is 5 years sober.  The 4 of us all met in sobriety, through various groups and podcasts and retreats and friends and decided to explore a region typically known for wine, alcohol-free and had the most fantastic time together.  4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. 15 Oct 2020Ep. 26: The Wine O’Clock Myth with Lotta Dann01:05:30
My guest today Lotta Dann, recovery advocate, blogger and author of three books: the best-selling memoir Mrs. D is Going Without, her second book Mrs. D Is Going Within, and the just released The Wine O’Clock Myth.  Lotta’s personal memoir of drinking, quitting drinking and living alcohol-free in a drink-filled world is witty, funny, and uplifting. Many memoirs are raw and gritty, but Mrs. D Is Going Without is both charming and real. I loved her book and completely related to Lotta’s experiences in early sobriety.  Today Lotta and I talk about The Wine O’Clock Myth, and why alcohol occupies such a privileged position in our society. It’s almost universally represented as a magic elixir to all our problems which makes life both fun and glamorous. And the fact that alcohol also negatively affects the lives of people is practically invisible in conversations about or representations of drinking.   In this episode, Lotta and I discuss: The truth that if you are struggling to moderate drinking, you are not alone and you are not the problem: alcohol is the problem. The way the liquor industry has targeted women and the damaging 'Wine Mom' social media culture. The importance of reframing the treat and reward concepts we’ve been taught (and internalized) around wine. That drinking is our treat at the end of the day and a much needed reward for hard work. Why after the initial hit of dopamine wine is a depressive substance that is numbing and cuts you off from yourself and the people around you. How to find other rewards and ‘sober treats’ that will nourish and ground you and that will actually make you feel better. How to intentionally create a social media feed that inspires you to see all the awesome ways to enjoy life without alcohol rather than one that glamorizes drinking at every turn. Why it’s critical to tap into a positive sober support community that shares the full picture of drinking - not just the one marketed to you. One that highlights both how good life can be without alcohol and shares truthfully the messages you will not see in popular culture, marketing or your social media feed - that drinking isn’t always harmless and fun. It can be dangerous and suck a lot of women (and men) into an unhealthy and unhappy cycle.   About Lotta Dann Lotta built a successful career as a TV reporter, producer, and director, while simultaneously developing a remarkable aptitude for drinking a lot of alcohol.   Lotta began an anonymous blog called “Mrs. D is Going Without” when she was first stopping drinking - as a way to work through her thoughts and feelings, and keep herself accountable when she was starting her journey without alcohol.     Shownotes: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/26 Grab your  Free Sober Girls Guide To Quitting Drinking   Get the guide on How to find and join my Favorite Private Sober Facebook groups   Get the Guide to The Best Quit Lit For Women (Including Lotta Dann’s Mrs. D is Going Without)   Connect with Lotta Dann The Wine O'Clock Myth: The Truth You Need To Know About Women and Alcohol: https://www.amazon.com/Wine-OClock-Myth-Truth-Alcohol/dp/1988547229 Mrs D is Going Without: A Memoir: https://www.amazon.com/Mrs-D-Going-Without-Memoir/dp/1877505390 Mrs D is Going Within: https://www.amazon.com/Mrs-Going-Within-Lotta-Dann/dp/1877505862 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mrs_d_alcoholfree/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mrsdisgoingwithout Lotta Dann's Blog: http://livingwithoutalcohol.blogspot.com/ Mrs. D's Blog on Living Sober: https://livingsober.org.nz/category/mrs-ds-blog/   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson Website: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com Instagram: Casey @ Hello Someday Coaching (@caseymdavidson) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HelloSomeday  Listen to more podcast episodes to drink less + live more.
22 Feb 2024Ep. 202: How To Overcome Imposter Syndrome Without A Drink01:10:10
Have you ever found yourself reaching for a drink to shake off a feeling of overwhelm, stress, insecurity or imposter syndrome?  I used to drink to feel less nervous the night before a big presentation, an interview or a performance review. I worried that I didn’t know enough, wasn’t well prepared enough or wouldn’t present confidently enough, so I thought a few glasses of wine would help me calm down and make those feelings disappear, even just for a little while. Impostor syndrome is surprisingly common among high achieving women. And it doesn’t matter if you’re a CEO, a lawyer, a teacher, graduate student or mom of little kids.  Most women feel an immense pressure to excel in all areas of our lives and a healthy fear of failure. Maybe when you’re at work you feel like you’re not doing enough at home with your kids or in your relationship. And when you’re at home you feel like you’re falling behind in the office.  And that’s only part of the way that women are made to feel like we’re not good enough or measuring up. Combine that with the fact that we feel like we have to look like we “have it all together” to be respected in the workplace, it’s no wonder so many of us want to dive into a bottle of wine to make it all go away at 6pm.  I asked my friend Amy Liz Harrison, a life coach, recovery and mental health advocate, and the host of the Eternally Amy podcast to help me dive into the topic of imposter syndrome and how women are drinking to cope with self-doubt and anxiety in a world with endless pressures to do more and be better. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life. 28 May 2020Ep.6: How To Find Friends In Sobriety01:08:08
QUITTING DRINKING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE LONELY. Finding friends can be hard. Finding friends who are on the same sobriety journey as you can be really hard.    But we’re here to help!   In this episode my sober bestie, Ingrid Miller, and I will talk about why finding support from people who have been where you are now and who are going through what you’re going through, in this “quitting drinking thing” is so important to your success.   No matter how much your friends and family love you and support you – they don’t know how you feel in this process.   My guest in this episode is Ingrid. She’s a friend I met 4+ years ago when I was first quitting drinking, the owner of the cutest book store in Seahurst Washington and an all around badass of a human being. I met Ingrid in a secret Facebook group at the beginning of my sober journey, 4 years ago.    Together we discuss how we met and the challenges we faced when trying to find a community of women who were going through or had been through the same things we were experiencing on our sobriety journey.  In this episode, you’ll learn: How to find the support you need – including a number of our favorite online and in person sober groups for busy women quitting drinking. How to get over the fears you have about joining sober groups. Why finding your people in sobriety makes the process of quitting drinking and creating a life you love without alcohol so much easier (and more fun). Why your spouse, partner, mom or best friend might not be the best person to hold your hand through this process.  How you might feel in your first 90 days and why you need women who have “been there and done that” to get you through to the good stuff.  Show Notes: https://hellosomedaycoaching.com/6/   RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Find My Favorite Sober Facebook Groups [The BFB “Booze Free Brigade” and She Recovers Together] Get the guide on how to find and join these groups: https://hellosomedaycoaching.com/sober-facebook-groups/ Connect with Ingrid Miller https://www.threetreesbooks.com Read about Ingrid Miller’s first 30 days: My quit drinking timeline: 0-30 days. 09 May 2024Ep. 213: How To Stop People-Pleasing In Sobriety01:13:44
I describe myself as an ex-red wine girl and a recovering people-pleaser. And if you’re wondering how those two things are connected we’re going to dig into that because as you start to navigate sobriety, boundaries are going to be your very best friend. Have you fallen into a people-pleasing pattern?  Maybe you’re an overachiever who takes care of everything and everyone.  Maybe you’re the happy, agreeable girl who spends a lot of time “reading the room” to anticipate the emotions of others so you can put them at ease.  Maybe you’re uncomfortable with conflict and would rather stuff down negative emotions than share them with the people in your life.  Maybe you’re afraid to say no because you want people to like you. Maybe you’re terrified of disapproval so you’re anxious, self-critical and a perfectionist.  Maybe you’re so busy meeting others’ expectations that you have trouble identifying your own wants, needs and feelings. Maybe you’re externally motivated, anxiously seeking the validation of your parents, teachers, boss, spouse, children or friends.  It even sounds exhausting. And those ingrained patterns of behavior can make you want to drink to check out from overwhelm, resentment, sadness, loneliness, stress, irritation, unhappiness or feeling unappreciated.  I asked my good friend Hailey Magee, a certified coach who helps people around the world break the people-pleasing pattern and master the art of self-advocacy and author of the book, Stop People Pleasing and Find Your Power to help me unpack people-pleasing, boundaries and why they matter in sobriety. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. 30 Jul 2020Ep.15: Quieting Your Inner Critic01:00:34
Do you have a loud inner critic voice?  You know the one that starts when you wake up and tells you that you're not good enough, thin enough, productive enough, patient enough, strong enough, smart enough or whatever? I used to believe that these daily repetitive negative thoughts were helping me. I thought I could berate myself into 'being better' or shame myself enough that I would stop drinking, start running or lose weight. I thought if I was just hard enough on myself - I'd get my shit together. The truth is it didn't work. I didn't work for me and it probably isn't working for you. It's just making you miserable. Somehow we've convinced ourselves that embracing the ways in which we ‘should’ be better will help us achieve more in life. But that's not true.   In fact, our inner critic can lead us to drink or numb out to turn it off and quiet your mind. And reaching for substances will only lead us to anxiety and more self-criticism. It's the opposite, limiting self-criticism and offsetting its negative effects, that will build resilience, reduce stress and lower anxiety.   And there’s an easy way to quiet your inner critic.    In this podcast episode we’ll dive into how and why to release the voice that tells you that you’re not enough and less than others.     My guest today is Vanessa Klugman, She’s an MD and a Certified Professional Coach and a Certified Professional Recovery Coach and she’ll share how healing your inner critic starts with self compassion. You’ll learn: Why working to quiet your inner critic is important How to limit self-criticism and offset its negative effects Myths about self-compassion (what it is and what it is not) How self-compassion builds resilience and decreases anxiety How to take a self-compassion break (the 3 part practice) How to heal yourself with mindfulness, kindness and the knowledge that you’re not alone.  About Vanessa Klugman, MD, ACC.  Vanessa is a physician, and mother of three.  She balanced the demands of a career and family for many years until the stress became overwhelming.  Vanessa turned to poor coping mechanisms to escape the demands that she placed on herself.  Vanessa had a harsh inner critic who told her messages that she was not good enough. She believed that her worth was equated with how much she achieved, how well she was liked, and how much she gave to others.  She wasn't living an authentic life. In recovery, she learned effective ways to face negative emotions: set boundaries that protected her sobriety; faced limiting beliefs and healed old wounds.  Vanessa’s passion is to guide others battling to find a healthy balance in their lives, to disconnect from their inner critic and reconnect with their inner wisdom. 21 Jan 2021Ep. 41: Aging, Sobriety and Women’s Wellness After 4001:00:10
Worrying about your drinking is a lonely and dark place to be, especially in midlife when women often feel stressed out, unfulfilled and lonely.    And that’s where my guest, Lori Massicot, says she lived for too long.    At 45 Lori says she was an over-drinker, overeater, "sky is falling" type of gal who, after questioning her drinking for two years, finally decided to stop drinking.   And then she discovered all the possibilities available to her now that she no longer spent her evenings on the couch drinking.     Lori is now a life coach specializing in sobriety, mindset transformation and holistic wellness for women over 40 and hosts the podcast To 50 And Beyond.   Being sober has given Lori a second chance at life and enabled her to become who she genuinely is, without the façade she was trying to keep up with for decades.    In this episode, Lori and I explore: Why more and more women are deciding to stop drinking at age 40, 50 and 60 How “aging sober” empowers women to live healthier, happier and more confident lives.  Why midlife is a good time to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol as you look to the decades ahead The perimenopause journey and how to get beyond it sober The correlation between drinking and weight gain in midlife How women’s wellness after 40 is improved by being alcohol-free   SHOWNOTES: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/41   About Lori Massicot Lori is a Life Coach specializing in sobriety, mindset transformation, and holistic wellness for women over 40. 20 Aug 2020Ep. 18: Kristi Coulter on Drinking, Working + "Being A First World Woman"01:38:56
If you’re a woman who’s trying to quit drinking it’s normal to look around and suddenly realize that booze is all around you.  There’s Rosé All Day, Hot Yoga and Happy Hour, beer at the finish line of the 10K and “Mommy Juice” at playdates with the kids. You look up from your wine glass to see that everyone around you is drinking, all the time.  We live in a culture that tells women that drinking is their treat for getting through the day. It’s our reward for working so hard and taking care of our kids.  We’re told alcohol is what we should consume to be ‘cool’ and ‘relaxed’ and ‘fun’.  We’re taught that drinking will make us less frustrated, less angry, less tired, less bored with the monotony of adulting.  And then we blame ourselves for not being able to ‘moderate’ or ‘cut back’ or ‘drink less’ of an addictive substance.   In today’s episode I have a long conversation with a friend and one of my favorite authors, Kristi Coulter, about Working, Drinking and Being a “First World Woman”.   Kristi and I talk about: Why women drink as a signifier for free time and self care and conversations - the luxuries we can’t afford. The myth of meritocracy at male dominated workplaces, and how it gaslights women into thinking it’s their fault for failing to achieve what their male coworkers do - in a system that’s stacked against them.  Why moderation sucks and why it’s just so much easier to not drink.  Why most women make the mistake of waiting to “want” to stop drinking and how that’s a recipe for staying stuck in the drinking cycle.  How stopping drinking is a superpower that allows women to ask for what they deserve and say what they mean.  Why drinking is not serving you if you’re wanting to advance your career   About Kristi Coulter Kristi Coulter is the author of the 2018 memoir-in-essays Nothing Good Can Come from This, a writer who is currently working on her next memoir - Exit Interview - about gender, ambition, and her twelve-year stint as an executive at Amazon, and a former drinker. Four years ago (in 2016) Kristi published an article on Medium that went viral and changed the course of her life. "Enjoli" is an essay about what happened after Kristi decided to stop drinking and realized that all the women around her were tanked. It hit a nerve among women (and men) around the world and has now been downloaded over 700,000 times. Kristi's work has appeared in The Paris Review, New York Magazine/The Cut, Elle, Amazon Original Stories, Glamour, Vox, and elsewhere.   Links and Resources mentioned in this episode Nothing Good Can Come From This by Kristi Coulter: https://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Good-Can-Come-This/dp/0374286205 Enjoli essay on Medium:https://humanparts.medium.com/https-medium-com-kristicoulter-the-24-hour-woman-3425ca5be19f The Otter Of Sobriety Essay (Want Not): https://medium.com/@kristicoulter/the-otter-of-sobriety-f7065c29b764#.x6a24bxbx Since Right Now Podcast Interview with Kristi Coulter: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/klen-sobr/since-right-now/e/1617-kristi-coulter-offdry-44143811 Belle Robertson Tired of Thinking About Drinking (Book) Belle Robertson Tired of Thinking About Drinking (Website)   Connect with Kristi Coulter Website: http://www.kristicoulter.com Off-Dry Blog: https://offdry.com/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kristicccoulter/   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson   www.hellosomedaycoaching.com Casey @ Hello Someday Coaching (@caseymdavidson)

25 Feb 2021Ep.46: Saying Yes To A Bigger Life with Laura McKowen00:52:52
In Laura McKowen’s memoir, We Are The Luckiest, she writes, “There is a life that is calling you forward, begging you to meet its eye, to glimpse its vision for you. You can get only so far by running away from what you do not want. Eventually you will have to turn toward what you do. 03 Oct 2024Ep. 234: A Habit Change Approach To Quitting Drinking00:53:40
Have you been trying to break your habit of drinking using willpower, positive inspiration or negative, fear-based motivation by trying to avoid negative consequences?  If you haven’t been successful in your attempts to stop drinking using this approach it’s actually not your fault. Instead you've likely just been trying to make a long term behavior change in all the wrong ways.  There are easy ways and hard ways to break a habit, and research into the science of behavior change shows that willpower just doesn’t work in the long term.  In this episode I’m going to talk about how to break your habit of drinking in four simple steps - without relying on willpower or hating the process.
21 Apr 2022Ep. 106: Growing Pains: Releasing Your Past Identity As A Drinker00:59:23
What we drink and how we drink is often deeply intertwined with the image and personality we present to the world, and can also be a part of our own internal identity.    As Kristi Coulter wrote in her essay Enjoli, what we drink can be a shorthand for who we are… “A woman with a single-malt scotch is bold and discerning and might fire you from her life if you fuck with her. A woman with a PBR is a Cool Girl who will not be shamed for belching. A woman drinking MommyJuice wine is saying she’s more than the unpaid labor she gave birth to.”   Drinking influences our relationships and interactions. It colors what we do, who we spend time with, what we tolerate and the types of boundaries we set (and often the ones we don’t set).    And, when you’re ready to stop drinking, there are growing pains related to releasing your past identity as a drinker, as well as relationships and behaviors that may no longer be serving you.   My guest today is Hailey Magee. She’s a Codependency Recovery Coach who helps individuals of all ages break the people-pleasing pattern, set empowered boundaries, and master the art of speaking their truth.   For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in the episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/106   Ready to drink less + live more? 03 Feb 2022Ep. 95: Making Marriage Work After Quitting Drinking01:16:12
How do you make marriage work after quitting drinking?  Most marriages have some common patterns and habits that can make or break the relationship. Problematic patterns can be exacerbated when you’re in the drinking cycle and new habits can be helpful once you stop drinking and your relationship is adjusting to a new normal. Because we use alcohol as a coping mechanism, a way to suppress negative emotions, and a tool to connect with the people around us, there is a learning curve to making marriage work after quitting drinking. Even if you have a strong and happy relationship it’s common to feel defensive, resentful, misunderstood, unappreciated, isolated, secretive or lonely when you’re struggling to moderate your drinking.   And once you’ve stopped drinking it’s normal to go through a phase where you wonder if you and your spouse know how to communicate or have anything in common. Life is busy, chaotic, and sometimes really overwhelming. 15 Jul 2021Ep. 66: Does Alcohol Keep You Playing Small?01:03:15
For so many of us alcohol keeps us playing small.  We love opening a bottle of wine at the end of the day but don’t realize how much of our time, energy, motivation and ability to follow through on our goals is being diminished by our drinking habit.  You might have New Year's Resolutions that you somehow never seem to keep, hobbies you’ve always wanted to try or feel like you’re barely keeping your head above water most days.  Or maybe you’re a woman who has always been able to achieve whatever you set your mind to in life, except managing your drinking.  If you’re a smart, ambitious, high-achieving woman who feels stuck, this episode is for you.   My guest today is here to talk about how drinking can sap your energy, confidence and motivation and keep you playing small. And how to start manifesting the big dreams and desires you have for your life.  Amanda Kuda is a writer, coach, and educator.  She’s a former social drinker and party girl who is now living (and loving) a 100% alcohol-free lifestyle. Amanda’s passionate about teaching other high-achieving women how to navigate the stumbling blocks of going alcohol-free so they can step into a life beyond their wildest dreams and stop playing small.   For full show notes, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/66   Support and resources to help you break away from wine mom culture You can Drink Less + Live More today with The Sobriety Starter Kit. There is a quiet time in early sobriety, after you get through the really hard first weeks, and before alcohol-free life is your new normal. The days and evenings may feel long and you might not know quite what to do with your time.  Over time drinking can become an activity, entertainment and a hobby.  My guest today is Jess Steitzer @decidelydry and she’s here to talk about why rediscovering creativity in sobriety can increase your happiness and strengthen your recovery. 27 Mar 2025Ep. 259: Why Moms Do It All and How To Get Your Partner To Do More01:11:41
If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything in your household—while your partner somehow has time to watch SportsCenter or scroll on their phone—you’re not alone. Managing the invisible load of running a home and family can feel like an unpaid, full-time job on top of everything else you do. And if you’re navigating sobriety, the stress, resentment, and exhaustion can feel even heavier—because now you’re no longer using alcohol as a “reward” or a way to take the edge off. I asked Eve Rodsky, author of Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do (and More Life to Live), to share how you can rebalance the division of labor in your home, set boundaries that stick, and reclaim your time—without the guilt, resentment, or endless arguments. 01 Sep 2022Ep. 125: The Best TV Shows and Movies About Addiction and Recovery00:58:27
If you’re searching for the best TV shows and movies about addiction and recovery, which realistically depict the nuances, emotions, strengths and struggles of walking away from an addictive substance, they can be hard to find. When you’re scrolling through broadcast TV, Netflix or Hulu you’ll find that most shows and movies glamorize alcohol and depict it as essential for a good time. In fact you can find hundreds of powerful, compelling, heartwarming, heartbreaking and funny TV shows and movies about addiction and recovery that will inspire you to change and remind you that you are not alone.  I asked Alysse Bryson, Founder of the Sober Curator, a resource for those seeking content related to recovery or a zero-proof lifestyle, to join me to share the best TV shows and movies about addiction and recovery. 08 Sep 2022Ep. 126: How Family And Friends Can Support Your Sobriety01:26:32
Once you’ve decided to stop drinking it is incredibly helpful to get your family and friends on board to support your sobriety.  Your loved ones have the ability to make a number of easy changes and small adjustments to support your sobriety and make it so much easier for you to successfully and happily navigate life alcohol-free.  Your social and physical environment can either be a safe space for you in a boozy world or a source of triggers and temptations.  One problem you may encounter as you start to change your relationship with alcohol is that often your family and friends have no idea how to support your sobriety. They may unknowingly say or do things that undermine your resolve or sabotage your progress.  Or some of your family and friends may not want you to stop drinking at all because they also have a complicated relationship with alcohol and fear that your sobriety might impact their own ability to drink. 15 Sep 2022Ep. 127: Why High-Achieving Women Struggle To Set Boundaries 01:08:25
High-achieving women can struggle to set boundaries. If you’re managing an endless to-do list and many responsibilities you likely have a tendency to over-deliver, over-give, people please and ignore your own needs instead of setting strong boundaries.  While you may get positive reinforcement from doing all the things for all the people (especially by those who benefit from your over-giving like your boss, colleagues, spouse, kids, family and friends), having poor boundaries is a recipe for burnout (and over drinking).  In fact, high-achieving women often suffer from perfectionism, imposter syndrome, self-doubt, anxiety and the inability to set healthy boundaries with others.  Creating healthy boundaries is an important skill to master as you’re quitting drinking and yet it’s something that many women who struggle with alcohol find difficult.  So I invited Terri Cole to join me on The Hello Someday Podcast to talk about how you can become a boundary boss and honor your own needs and desires. 22 Sep 2022Ep. 128: How To Be OK When Things Are Not OK01:02:30
In the book, Big Feelings: How To Be Okay When Things Are Not Okay, Liz Fosslien and her co-author, Mollie West Duffy, examine the seven emotions that are especially hard to overcome: self-doubt, comparison, and anger, as well as burnout, perfectionism, despair, and regret.  And these are emotions most of us never talk about. Instead, we move through life wondering “What’s wrong with me?” and “Why can’t I handle this like everyone else?”. The truth is that most women are struggling with these emotions too, quietly and alone, just like you.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in this episode, head to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/128 Ready to drink less + live more? 29 Sep 2022Ep. 129: Changing An Unhealthy Drinking Culture At Work01:04:53
What does an unhealthy drinking culture at work look like?  Is drinking a company-organized activity? Are company events centered around alcohol?  Are new employees taken out for drinks, team bonding gatherings hosted at a bar or holiday parties at a winery? Is drinking normalized as a coping mechanism for stress at work? Do you hear colleagues discussing “needing a drink” after a tough day or being hungover on a Monday morning? Is alcohol the reward for a job well done? Are champagne bottles left on desks after a big project or alcohol brought in to toast to a big win? Is alcohol available in the office or brought in for social events during office hours? Is “Beer on Tap” a company perk or is there a weekly happy hour in the office on Fridays? Are you expected to take clients out drinking as part of the job?  Do you feel pressure to drink at company events or do people throw around the phrase “Work Hard. Play Hard” to describe the company culture?  If you have an unhealthy drinking culture at work, the good news is that there are steps that you can take to change it, navigate drinking events at work alcohol-free and access support if you’re trying to change your relationship with alcohol.  Tessa Lowe is here to help. She’s an ex-wine mom that hit her own personal rock bottom in December of 2020 and now works with both individuals and employers to help create both personal and organizational change. 06 Oct 2022Ep. 130: Therapy For Women01:20:52
Therapy for women often focuses on a unique set of challenges experienced by women in their lives and in society. Some mental health issues are much more common in women than in men, some only appear in women, or some mental health issues may affect all genders but impact women differently. The US Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health reported that more than 1 in 5 women in the United States experienced a mental health condition in the past year, such as depression or anxiety. And the Mayo Clinic has found that women are nearly twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression. In therapy, women are able to work through how to set healthy boundaries, make a shift in their lives, resolve marital issues, move through divorce or infidelity or change limiting beliefs with confidential support from a trained professional.  I asked Amanda E. White, founder of Therapy For Women and the popular @therapyforwomen Instagram account to talk about all things women, mental health, disordered eating, alcohol abuse, sobriety and so much more.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in the episode, head to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/130 Ready to drink less + live more? 13 Oct 2022Ep. 131: Navigating A Toxic Relationship With A Narcissist01:09:47
Navigating a toxic relationship with a narcissist is incredibly difficult and it’s easy to start drinking as a coping mechanism to escape.   You may have a partner who is a narcissist, have grown up with a narcissistic mother or father, or navigating co-parenting your children with a narcissistic ex.  And if you’re in a relationship with a narcissist and you’re drinking a lot, they will use your drinking as a tool to further confuse and gaslight you, or blame you for situations where they need to take responsibility and make changes. Quitting drinking is a powerful way to get clarity and take more control in a relationship with a narcissist, whether it’s a parent, sibling, partner or ex.  I asked Heather Kent, a registered psychotherapist and trauma recovery specialist with an expertise in PTSD, Narcissism, Narcissistic abuse, Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and Trauma Recovery to share how she helps women through the process of ending abusive and toxic relationships, and re-building their lives after they have left. 20 Oct 2022Ep. 132: Using Science + Kindness To Change Your Relationship with Alcohol01:10:05
Redefining your relationship with alcohol is a learning process that requires compassion and grace for yourself.  Alcohol is the most prescribed drug in the world by friends, family and society. Many people are actively encouraged to drink by others if they are having a bad day, stressed out, out for an evening or celebrating. And it’s no surprise that nearly half of all American adults are dealing with substance abuse problems in their family.  But according to the co-author, Carrie Wilkens, PhD of the book, The Beyond Addiction Workbook for Family and Friends:Evidence-Based Skills to Help a Loved One Make Positive Change, the most effective way to treat addiction is one of the least utilized: support, kindness, and compassion. You can address substance use disorders with evidence-based methods for improving communication, strengthening motivation to reduce or stop using substances, and practicing compassion and self-care to create the conditions for change. 27 Oct 2022Ep. 133: Risk Factors For Alcohol Use Disorder01:00:53
What are the risk factors for alcohol use disorder? Are they genetic, social, environmental or psychological? Alcohol is the most widely misused substance in America and, according to the National Center For Drug Abuse Statistics, 1-in-10 Americans over the age of 12 qualify as having a mild, moderate or severe Alcohol Use Disorder. So how do you get to your first year alcohol-free? I asked Dr. Nzinga Harrison to share both the risk factors for alcohol use disorder and strategies to help people become part of the 75% of people who do recover.  Dr. Harrison is a physician with specialties in addiction medicine and psychiatry, the Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Eleanor Health and co-founder of Physicians for Criminal Justice Reform. She’s spent her career focusing on stigma reduction and health equity and is an advocate for leading with empathy in addiction treatment and reframing the way we view and address addiction and the people who are dealing with substance use disorders. 03 Nov 2022Ep. 134: Your Addictive Voice and The One You Feed01:28:04
When you’re struggling with drinking it can feel like a battle within you, between your addictive voice that tells you that you deserve to have a drink and the other voice (the one that shows up in the morning) that tells you alcohol is dragging you down and making you sick.  I call my addictive voice “Wolfie” based on the parable of The Two Wolves.  When that endless debate goes on in your head about whether you should drink or not, you might wonder, which voice wins? Your addictive voice or the voice telling you that you need to take a break from drinking?  The answer is the one you feed. Today Eric Zimmer, host of the incredibly popular podcast with over 30 million downloads, The One You Feed, author and behavior coach, is here to talk about what happens when you feed your addiction vs. turning towards the good wolf.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in this episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/134  Ready to drink less + live more? 22 Jul 2021Ep. 67: Healthy Coping Mechanisms For Stress And How To Model Them For Your Kids01:20:28
How many of us learned healthy coping mechanisms for managing stress, anxiety or depression when we were kids?    If our parents didn’t model for us healthy ways to cope with the normal human emotions of overwhelm, loneliness, resentment, anger or fear, it’s easy to emulate their patterns or buy into the narrative that alcohol will help us take the edge off and relax after a hard day.    And if you’re the parent of tweens or teens, asking them to not drink or experiment with drugs, it’s hard to reconcile that message with opening a bottle of wine every night.    One of the reasons that kids start using alcohol and drugs is because they don’t know how to manage and cope with their emotions. And in order to help them it’s important for parents to be present in order to model for children how to manage their own emotions.    Today I’m talking with Brenda Zane, a Mayo Clinic Certified Health, Wellness Coach and Parent Coach, whose work supports moms of kids with substance use disorder. Her mission is to help moms maintain their health and sanity as they navigate the chaos and fear of having a child who’s misusing drugs or alcohol.    We’re talking about how to build healthy coping skills for negative emotions and stressful situations and how to model those coping mechanisms for your children. 10 Nov 2022Ep. 135: Your First Sober Holiday Season01:20:24
If you’re in early sobriety or are trying to stop drinking, navigating your first sober holiday season can be a challenge.  Why is it hard to get through your first sober holiday season? Well, the holidays are not only a wonderful time of year but also a gauntlet of social, emotional and environmental triggers to drink.  I was nine months sober my first holiday season and thought that I would have no problem enjoying it alcohol-free. And still, I was surprised by the need to tap into sober support and plan around drinking events to maintain my sobriety. Kimberly Kearns, a friend and author of the sobriety memoir On the Edge of Shattered, also had a difficult time in her first sober holiday season. Kim stopped drinking right after Thanksgiving and was only 3 weeks sober going into her first sober Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.   Kim and I are going to share with you all our best tips, advice and strategies to survive your first sober holiday season. 17 Nov 2022Ep. 136: Love Your Sober Year00:56:08
Your first sober year can be awkward, challenging, empowering, tender, transformative and unsettling. Over the course of moving from your first 30 Days not drinking to completing 12 months alcohol-free you will learn to navigate events, relationships, work, parenting and joy, anger, anxiety, stress without drinking.  You’ll also move through awakenings, transitions and the seasons of the year with a new clarity and awareness of the world around you. Some people describe sobriety after a longer period of drinking as being able to see everything in technicolor.  So as you move from one week alcohol-free to 52 weeks of sobriety it helps to have a guide to ground yourself in the natural rhythms of the year and the seasons of sobriety.  My friends Kate Baily and Mandy Manners from Love Sober have created just that.  Their new book Love Your Sober Year, A Seasonal Guide To Living Alcohol-Free is an intentional guide to sobriety through each of the four seasons of the year. 24 Nov 2022Ep. 137: Life After Drinking - Two Years Alcohol-Free01:33:13
When you first start on your sober journey it’s hard to imagine life after drinking, much less how you’ll feel at 2 years alcohol-free.  So I asked a sober coaching client of mine, Sue Winters, to join me on the podcast to talk about quitting drinking and her life now that she’s 2 years alcohol-free. I started working with Sue in early sobriety and here’s what she told me about her drinking… “For the past 10 years I’ve known that I was drinking too much. I’ve tried repeatedly to cut back, moderate or quit and I’ve failed every time. I’m caught in a self-destructive cycle of drinking a bottle of wine most nights of the week, not sleeping, waking up hungover, gaining weight and being unhappy”. It’s now been two years since Sue said goodbye to that self-destructive drinking cycle and she feels like her sober adventure is only just beginning.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in this episode, head to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/137 Ready to drink less + live more? 21 Mar 2024Ep. 206: Protecting Your Mental Health While Raising A Neurodivergent Kid01:19:23
Raising a child with ADHD, Autism or neurodivergence can be mentally, emotionally and physically exhausting and alcohol can seem like an easy way to relax and turn off your brain at the end of the day.  Neurodiversity encompasses a variety of conditions such as autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, dyslexia, and more. Each condition presents its own unique set of challenges and strengths, impacting the experiences of both the kids and their parents.  Dr. Emily King notes, “Most neurodivergent kids have really big feelings and sensitive nervous systems. They may be too overwhelmed to interact socially the way neurotypical children do. If you're the mother of a neurodivergent child it's like parenting on steroids. You have to be more consistent and on your game all the time and that can be completely draining.” There are also complex emotions parents feel when having a child diagnosed with neurodivergence.  Combine the stress and responsibilities of parenting a neurodivergent kid with the fact that women, to a greater extent than men, tend to drink to cope with stress and negative feelings, and you have the perfect recipe for alcohol to become both a coping strategy and a problem for moms in this situation. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life. 01 Dec 2022Ep. 138: Tools To Overcome Alcohol Cravings01:20:31
In early sobriety, it’s important to have tools and practices to help you overcome alcohol cravings. It’s normal to have cravings to drink in your first few weeks without alcohol, and they’ll get less strong and frequent the further you get away from the drinking cycle.  In the beginning, alcohol cravings are driven by physical, social, emotional and habitual cues to drink.  Understanding why cravings occur, knowing your triggers and finding new activities and practices to overcome the discomfort of wanting to drink will help you develop healthier ways to manage your emotions and social situations. I asked Mary Tilson, a certified Professional Recovery Coach (IAPRC), Yoga & Meditation Teacher and the Founder of Sun & Moon Sober Living, to come on the podcast to share the best practices and strategies to overcome alcohol cravings. 08 Dec 2022Ep. 139: How To Recover From Infidelity And Betrayal01:01:36
How can couples heal and recover from infidelity once trust in an intimate relationship has been shattered by an affair? The first step, after the sexual acting out has stopped, is to understand and treat the betrayal trauma. In addition to learning about and coping with infidelity, an affair, sexual acting out, pornography use or sex addiction itself, the partner who has discovered infidelity is also suffering from betrayal trauma that is often not appreciated or fully understood. Betrayal trauma is a form of trauma experienced when there is a loss of trust between spouses or those in committed relationships due to physical adultery, an emotional affair, sex or porn addiction or other sexual behavior outside the relationship and can result in PTSD symptoms in the betrayed partner.  Marnie Breecker and Duane Osterlind, Marriage and Family Therapists and Certified Sex Addiction Therapists, are here to share how to help couples heal and recover from infidelity, sex addiction, emotional affairs and betrayal trauma.  For full shownotes and to access resources mentioned i this episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/139 Ready to drink less + live more? 15 Dec 2022Ep. 140: What You Need To Know About Highly Sensitive People And Alcohol01:20:52
Highly Sensitive People may turn to alcohol as a tool to numb overwhelming situations or as a coping mechanism to dull strong emotions.  Alcohol has been described as a “mute button” for highly sensitive people in a world that is often too loud.  It’s estimated that 15 to 20 percent of the population are HSPs and 1 to 2% of the population are true empaths. An empath is a person who is highly sensitive to the feelings and emotions of those around them and may absorb those feelings as their own. I asked Nikki Eisenhauer, an International Life Coach and Psychotherapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, Yoga and Meditation Teacher and the host of the wildly popular podcast, Emotional Badass, to share how to navigate the world as a highly sensitive person or empath without turning to alcohol. 22 Dec 2022Ep. 141: Finding Your Identity In Sobriety01:02:54
Finding your identity in sobriety can be scary for many women when they stop drinking.  For years I described myself as a “red wine girl” and drinking was essentially my favorite hobby.  I surrounded myself with other people who loved to drink so my social life, activities, favorite places, traditions and relationships were deeply intertwined with alcohol.  When I stopped drinking I didn’t know what I enjoyed without drinking.  Maz Compton, host of the Last Drinks podcast and I are here to dig into how to find your identity in sobriety.  Maz knew she had a problem with alcohol when she couldn’t stop saying yes to it, despite having a high-powered career and success in all the externally visible areas of her life.  Once she stopped drinking Maz had to figure out who she was, her interests and identity without alcohol. 29 Dec 2022Ep. 142: How To Make Sobriety Stick00:56:24
How many times have you told yourself that you were going to stop drinking? I did it hundreds of times.  Sometimes I’d rationalize drinking again that very night, but often I’d go 4 days, a week or even 2 weeks alcohol-free before I’d decide that I deserved “just a glass” on a Friday night.  Stopping drinking is hard, but making sobriety stick is also difficult. You might have decided to stop drinking because of a particularly brutal hangover, an embarrassing night or a slow decline into feeling worse and worse due to your alcohol consumption.  Initially, the reason you want to remove alcohol in your life is clear and present, which keeps your willpower strong and motivation high.  But how do you stay on the alcohol-free path when you get bogged down in the day-to-day realities and responsibilities of life and alcohol is your go-to coping mechanism?  The easiest way to make sobriety stick is to create a vision board. I created my first vision board in early sobriety and it helped me stay centered on the reasons I wanted to be alcohol-free long after my initial motivation and willpower faded.  Today on the podcast I’m sharing why vision boards are a powerful tool in sobriety and how to create one that will support you in staying on the alcohol-free path. If you’re a high-achieving, busy mom juggling a demanding career, family, and all the other responsibilities life throws your way, you may feel like you’ve been holding it all together… but with a few drinks (or a bottle of wine) at the end of each day.  If you’re used to being “on” all the time, there are a lot of hidden pressures that make giving up alcohol as your number one coping tool and “quick fix” for stress and connection difficult along the way. If you’re a high-achieving mom, managing recovery while maintaining family routines, careers, and social responsibilities can feel overwhelming.  But there are ways to create a healthy, balanced family lifestyle that supports your sobriety. I asked Sarah Allen Benton, author of Parents in Recovery, to talk with me about what it really means to be a parent in recovery and how you can thrive in both roles without sacrificing your well-being.  Sarah breaks down strategies that high-functioning parents can use to navigate sobriety successfully and create a nurturing environment for themselves and their families. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. 24 Oct 2024Ep. 237: Anger Management in Sobriety00:57:26
Managing anger is one of the most challenging, and often surprising, aspects of sobriety. If you're on the path to recovery or have recently stopped drinking, you might have noticed emotions like anger bubbling up more frequently or intensely than before. It's a normal part of the process, but it can feel overwhelming, especially when you’ve been using alcohol to numb those feelings for years. I asked my good friend Gill Tietz, host of the Sober Powered Podcast, certified anger management specialist, crisis intervention specialist and professional recovery coach, to talk about anger—what it really is, why it shows up, and how you can manage it in a way that supports your sobriety rather than jeopardizes it. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. 07 Nov 2024Ep. 239: How The Wine Industry Targets Women To Drink Problematically01:22:05
Have you seen the “Rosé All Day” t-shirts? Or the ones that say “This Mom Runs On Coffee, Wine and Amazon Prime”?  How about the World Health Organization’s findings that “No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health”. In this episode, I’m diving into the marketing strategies the wine industry uses to appeal directly to women and how this targeted messaging is designed to encourage women to drink problematically and why the wine industry is freaking out that the World Health Organization (who they describe as the leader of the “anti-alcohol lobby”) is having success with its message that “there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink”.   Together with Ruby Williams—a former wine industry insider and certified alcohol freedom coach—we’re peeling back the curtain on the strategies that have helped normalize alcohol as an everyday coping tool for women. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. 25 Mar 2021Ep.50: Overcoming Perfectionism: How to Get Out Of Your Own Way01:16:49
Let’s talk about perfectionism - what it is, why it happens and how it might be holding you back from doing the things you are meant to do and what you want to do in life. 07 Jan 2021Ep. 39: Tired Of Thinking About Drinking With Belle Robertson (My Sober Coach)01:11:05
Today my guest on the podcast is my very own sober coach.  Belle Robertson from Tired Of Thinking About Drinking was the person I emailed on my very last “Day 1” 5 years ago, after I woke up at 3am and decided that I needed support to stop drinking wine every night.  After that first day, and over the course of 2 years, Belle and I exchanged over 800 email messages!  Belle held my hand through my first week without alcohol and gave me advice and support as I navigated dinner parties, crappy days at work, date nights, sick kids, camping trips and my first sober vacation in Europe.    I love Belle's approach because it's practical, approachable and positive.  When I started working with her I heard this message - and it set me on the path I’m still walking today.  She said, “So I want you to imagine that there's something else for you, something better than what you're doing now. I want you to think about what could be rather than what is. So if there's a you who right now is a person who's drinking, and you want to be something else, and you want something else to happen in your life, and you don't know how to get there. And you don't know how to get this voice in your head to stop. I know what the answer is. I know that you don't believe me when I tell you I know what the answer is. Because the answer is stop drinking. And when you stop drinking, things change.”   In this episode, Belle and I discuss: The benefits of not drinking and having a sober coach Why having a positive mindset will help guide you through sobriety Why repeated relapse is normal and how to change your strategy to support sobriety How being sober takes work, it doesn’t happen overnight Why removing the booze will make things better for you and your relationships The drinking cycle of quitting drinking and how it affects your mental health The importance of self care during your sobriety journey About Belle Robertson Belle is a writer and a sober coach with a website, Tired Of Thinking About Drinking. She's written a book about how to quit drinking, and has worked one on one as a sober coach with 3258 individuals. Belle hasn't had a drink in over eight years and she started her own sober journey with a sober trial, a period of time off alcohol to see how she liked it. And apparently she did. When she's not recording sober audios or coaching by email. She works as a caterer and a text designer, originally from Canada. Bell lives in Paris and Vermont with her husband, who's also a Canadian.    Connect With Belle Robertson To learn more about Belle and how she can support you on your sober journey, head over to www.tiredofthinkingaboutdrinking.com Follow her on Instagram: @tiredofthinkingaboutdrinking Order her book, Tired of Thinking About DrinkingTake my 100 Day Sober Challenge by Belle Robertson Listen to Belle’s audiobook: https://gumroad.com/l/Belle-TOTAD-audio, Tired of Thinking About Drinking Take my 100 Day Sober Challenge by Belle Robertson   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson Check out  The Sobriety Starter Kit. 03 Jun 2021Ep.60: Dawn Nickel of She Recovers on The Many Paths To Recovery00:58:07
Sometimes if you’re lucky someone reaches out to you in the early days when you’re first trying to stop drinking and shows you how to take the first steps. And for me, that person was Dawn Nickel.   8 years ago, when I first thought that I needed to stop drinking and decided to try life without wine, Dawn reached out to me.  I was traveling with my son and husband from Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia for a long weekend, my first in 5 years where I wasn’t going to drink, and Dawn picked me up for coffee, drove me to a beautiful beach and we talked all about drinking and not drinking and where I was and what I wanted and what I was afraid of.   She’s amazing. And she’s also a pretty big deal.  Today on the podcast I was thrilled to interview her and talk about women and the way we recover, from all things and in all ways.  I hope you love the conversation as much as I did.  Dr. Dawn Nickel is a respected thought leader in the women’s recovery sphere and (along with her daughter Taryn Strong) the founder of SHE RECOVERS Foundation, a not-for-profit grassroots organization that inspires hope, reduces stigma, and empowers women in or seeking recovery for substance use and/or mental health challenges.  Dawn is a strong advocate for the view that every woman in or seeking recovery must be supported to find the tools and pathways that will work best for her as an individual. 12 Aug 2021Ep. 70: The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober with Catherine Gray00:55:55
If you've read any Quit Lit, Catherine Gray's book, The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober, is likely on your bookshelf or Kindle. It's one of the first books about giving up alcohol I recommend to women as they're starting their journey to stop drinking.   So I'm incredibly excited because my guest today is the author of The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober, Catherine Gray. I met Catherine online in a secret non-drinking Facebook group 8 years ago, when she was first starting her life without alcohol and she has been an inspiration to me ever since.   We're here to talk about all things drinking, and quitting drinking, the joy you can find in life without alcohol and her new book, Sunshine Warm Sober: Unexpected Sober Joy That Lasts.   Staying sober is about so much more than putting down the alcohol. It’s about recovering and reclaiming your best possible self.     You don’t have to spend all day sleeping off your hangover, you can leap out of bed at seven and go on an early morning walk, or join your friends for a lovely brunch. Catherine Gray is a Sunday Times bestselling author of five books and an award-winning writer and editor. Catherine's hit debut, The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober, was a Sunday Times top 10 bestseller. Since then she has published The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober Journal and the critically acclaimed Unexpected Joy of Being Single and The Unexpected Joy of The Ordinary. 16 Mar 2023Ep. 153: Is Moderate Drinking Good For Your Health?01:14:11
Let’s dive into a hotly debated topic: Is moderate drinking good for your health? If you google this question you’ll likely find articles with titles like “surprising ways alcohol is good for you” with outdated information based on flawed studies that imply there are both health benefits and risks to drinking, or that it’s an open question if moderate drinking is good for your health.  Here’s the truth: there are no health benefits to drinking and it’s not an open question if moderate drinking is good for your health.  In this episode, we'll explore the research on moderate drinking and its health risks, the science behind these risks and why they are often overlooked or misunderstood by the general public. If you're currently trying to quit drinking or are considering making a change, this episode will provide you with valuable insights and information to help you make an informed decision about your health and wellness. 23 Mar 2023Ep. 154: 5 Types Of Perfectionism And How To Make Them Work For You01:11:13
Why do so many self-described perfectionists, bright, ambitious and hardworking women, feel like something is wrong with them?  Why are women taught that perfectionism is a flaw to be managed? Why are perfectionists so hard on themselves? And how can ambitious achievers, striving towards the ideal, find peace and self-compassion while continuing to embrace their perfectionism?  I wanted to dive into all these questions with my guest today, Katherine Morgan Schafler, because I both identify as a perfectionist and work with a lot of perfectionists: high-achieving, successful women who use alcohol as a way to disconnect from the anxiety and overwhelm of their lives.  Katherine’s a psychotherapist, speaker, author of The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control and former on-site therapist at Google who has worked with legions of self-described perfectionists. In this episode, we dive into all things women and perfectionism. 30 Mar 2023Ep. 155: The Original Sobriety Podcast For Women - The Bubble Hour01:02:42
10 years ago, when I was first questioning my relationship with alcohol and trying to stop drinking, I discovered The Bubble Hour Sobriety Podcast. On The Bubble Hour I heard real people, telling real stories about addiction and recovery.  When I was first trying to get a handle on my nightly bottle of wine drinking habit, I didn’t know a single person who was sober.  All of my friends drank, my husband drank, and I had so many fears about what people would think if I stopped drinking, what my life would be like and how I would relax, socialize and celebrate without alcohol. On The Bubble Hour sobriety podcast I found hope in the stories of women like me.  Over the last 10 years the Bubble Hour released over 300 episodes about addiction and recovery from drinking and was downloaded 4.2 million times. And today my guest is the host of The Bubble Hour Podcast, Jean McCarthy. 06 Apr 2023Ep. 156: Does Alcohol Help You Sleep?01:08:11
If you've ever wondered whether alcohol helps you sleep, why you wake up in the middle of the night after drinking or how much alcohol messes up your sleep, this episode is for you.  Some people believe that drinking helps them go to sleep. Since alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, it causes brain activity to slow down which can feel relaxing. But while alcohol may make you feel sleepy initially, it wreaks havoc on your sleep for the rest of the night.  Drinking decreases the amount of time spent in deep sleep, which is the most restorative phase of the sleep cycle, and increases the frequency of awakenings during the night. Alcohol can also exacerbate or cause sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, and interfere with the body's natural production of hormones and neurotransmitters that regulate sleep and wakefulness. If you drink nightly or even drink just a few nights a week, you probably have not had a good night of sleep in years. 13 Apr 2023Ep. 157: How To Use Positive Discipline To Ease The Stress Of Parenting01:20:20
Parenting young children can be wonderful, fulfilling, frustrating and exhausting.  People will tell you “the days are long but the years are short”, but when you’ve got a toddler melting down at the end of the day it’s easy to want to escape by opening a bottle of wine.  Wine mom culture exists because being a mom is hard.  For a lot of us pouring a big glass of wine is the “easy button” to numb out from overwhelming situations and responsibilities. I got into the habit of drinking to reward myself for getting through the day, to transition from work to home and to shut down once the kids go to bed before doing it all again.  But since alcohol is easy to get, highly addictive and embedded in our culture it’s not difficult for a glass of wine to turn into a bottle. Parenting is hard, but alcohol isn’t the answer.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in this episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/157 Ready to drink less + live more? 04 May 2023Ep. 160: Aligning Your Core Values with Alcohol-Free Life01:16:18
In this episode, we explore the topic of how to identify your personal core values and use them to reinforce your decision to live an alcohol-free life in a positive and meaningful way that sustains your sobriety over the long-term.  Core values are fundamental beliefs that can guide our behavior and decision-making in life. They serve as a compass, giving us direction and helping us to prioritize what is truly important and meaningful in our lives.  Once you know your own personal core values you can use them to evaluate how you’re spending your time, money and energy as well as using them to make decisions. For example, you can ask yourself “Does this move, job, habit, behavior, connection or decision bring me closer to my values or take me further away?”  Identifying your core values is important personal development work to do when you decide to stop drinking. 20 Jun 2024Ep. 219: Should I Take A Break From Drinking? Look For These Signs To Know It’s Time01:01:44
Have you been thinking about taking a break from drinking, only to decide that you’re “not that bad”?  Most women who wonder if they’re drinking too much can look around and find lots of reasons why it’s not a “real issue”.  We’ve been told that having a problem with alcohol is black or white. Either you fall into the category of someone who is “an alcoholic” or who has a “drinking problem", or you don’t. But in truth binge drinking among women has become so normalized that it’s easy to dismiss any worries you have about your alcohol consumption by looking at friends and family members who drink like you do. A lot of women fall into a category known as “gray area drinking” where your drinking falls between the extremes of having negative consequences from alcohol consumption and being able to take it or leave it on occasion.  You don’t have to have a drinking problem to decide that drinking isn’t helping you be your best self. And you don’t need to be an alcoholic to benefit from a longer period of time alcohol-free. Are you craving sugar in early sobriety? If you are, you’re not alone. When I first stopped drinking I kept Peanut M&Ms in my bag so I could grab them if I really wanted to drink.  It’s normal to crave sugar in early sobriety for the simple reason that alcohol contains a lot of sugar. Your body has gotten used to the regular influx of sugar from drinking.  There are a lot of (very real) reasons your body is seeking sugar when you remove alcohol. Hunger is a huge trigger to drink and going on a diet or health kick at the same time that you’re quitting drinking is the most common way women self-sabotage their efforts to be alcohol-free.  So I asked an expert to help me break down both why we crave sugar in early sobriety and how to optimize nutrition when you quit drinking alcohol to help boost your mood and energy.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in the episode, head to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/162 Ready to drink less + live more? 25 May 2023Ep. 163: Daily Meditations For Women in Recovery01:03:04
If you are very lucky you’ll connect with someone further along in sobriety who takes the time to show you the way. For me that person was Dawn Nickel, the founder of She Recovers, long before it had grown into the powerful recovery movement it is today.  Ten years ago, when I was 20 days alcohol-free for the first time, I shared in a group that I was nervous about going to Victoria BC for a long weekend with my husband and 5 year old son. I couldn’t imagine going out to dinner and being on vacation and not drinking.  Dawn saw my post and reached out to me. She invited me to coffee in Victoria, picked me up at my hotel and took me to a beautiful beach to talk. Since that day she’s been a touchstone on my alcohol-free journey.  For full shownotes and to access resources mentioned in the episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/163 How I can help you drink less + live more Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women.  My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life. 16 May 2024Ep. 214: Quit Like A Woman with Holly Whitaker01:06:37
In this special anniversary episode, I’m celebrating four incredible years of the Hello Someday Podcast, marked by 214 episodes and 1.5 million downloads. It's been an amazing journey, and I'm deeply grateful to each and every one of you who has joined me along the way. To mark this occasion, I'm thrilled to revisit my top guest interview of all time: my conversation with Holly Whitaker, author of The New York Times best-selling book Quit Like A Woman, The Radical Choice To Not Drink In A Culture Obsessed with Alcohol. Holly's book holds a special place in my heart as she was a big part of my own sobriety journey.  In this episode Holly and I talk about the role of alcohol in society and its impact on women, why to embrace the trial-and-error nature of quitting drinking and why phrases like "Never Question the Decision" (NQTD) can serve as powerful mantras on the journey to sobriety. We also dive into how much the recovery movement has shifted in the last 10 years as more women are speaking out about their decision to stop drinking. Quit Like A Woman has been described as a groundbreaking look at drinking culture and a road map to cutting out alcohol that will change the way you look at drinking forever. I know you’re going to love this conversation with Holly.  Ready to drink less + live more?If you’re ready to change your relationship with alcohol join The Sobriety Starter Kit.It's my signature sober coaching course for busy women to help you drink less + live more.To enroll go to www.sobrietystarterkit.com. 11 Mar 2021Ep. 48: Sexy Sobriety with Bex Weller01:10:15
Rebecca (Bex) Weller is one of my favorite people to talk with about why life without alcohol is awesome.  Bex is a Health & Life Coach from Perth, Australia. She’s the founder of Sexy Sobriety and the author of two books, A Happier Hour and Up All Day.  The work Bex does is centered around helping women discover how much they gain once they put down the wine glass. She works with women to get their sparkle back after it's been dulled by drinking and hangovers. In our conversation today Bex and I talk about how life without alcohol can be fun and sexy, adventurous, joyful and (most of all) carefree. Bex says the biggest benefit she’s found in sobriety is the feeling of freedom.   Bex discovered that after (finally) saying “I’m not drinking at all anymore” she suddenly had the headspace, heart space, courage and energy to reach her potential and build the life she really wanted. She felt free for the first time.  So if you’re holding on to drinking because you’re afraid that life without alcohol will be boring or dull, this is the episode for you!  In this episode, Bex and I dive into: Why to make a list of “10 Things Better Than Booze” (and then all the other lists!) Tips on how to make alcohol-free life more exciting and fun Why to focus on everything you’re gaining by not drinking, not what you’re giving up How to coach yourself through triggers and cravings and nurture yourself from the inside out Why sobriety is better than moderation (spoiler: it’s the freedom) Why to not focus on the concept of ‘forever’ “You know what’s a hell of a lot more glamorous than champagne and cocktails? Self-worth, empowerment, creativity, connection, and SOUL.” - Bex Weller About Rebecca Weller Rebecca is the Creator of SexySobriety.com, she leads one-on-one and group coaching programs, hosts live events, and is the author of the best-selling memoir, A Happier Hour, and the long-awaited follow-up, Up All Day. 16 Jul 2020Ep.13: Managing Anxiety In Sobriety Using Rain Mindfulness01:06:36
Do you use drinking to shut off your mind? Do you use drinking as a coping mechanism to push away your feelings? Many women, just like you, who drink have underlying anxiety issues they might be coping with, and they use drinking to make those feelings go away.   Anxiety is the number one side effect from drinking. If you drink often, you may have anxiety more deeply and more pronounced than you would have otherwise.   Jessica Foody and I are discussing anxiety and the tools to cope with anxiety that you can take away and implement in your life.    Jessica is a registered nurse, a recovery coach, and a She Recovers signature coach. Her expertise is in working with women who struggle, both with addiction and with anxiety. She helps women not only drink less, but transform their relationship with anxiety.   Jessica shares her favorite mindfulness techniques and how to unconditionally love and accept yourself, anxiety and all. Jessica believes that recovery is the return to the joy of living.   In this episode, you’ll learn about a Buddhist mindfulness technique that can help you work with any difficult emotion for anxiety. This technique is called the Rain technique. The rain technique can be used either in formal meditation practice or when a strong emotion is coming up.   Rain stands for RECOGNIZE, ALLOW, INVESTIGATE and NURTURE.   RECOGNIZE - Recognize what you’re feeling. With anxiety, this can be something that you are very attuned to and are very good at recognizing it.   ALLOW - Allowing your anxiety to be here just as it is. The more you resist something, the more you’re trying to get rid of it, the more you’re trying to push it away, it actually gets stronger, it gets bigger. You can't push away feelings, you can't get rid of feelings outside of numbing. So when you allow your anxiety to be here, just as it is, it's like you give your anxiety space to breathe.   INVESTIGATE - Investigate your body. Investigate with kindness. Get out of your head and get into your heart. Ask yourself, what's happening with me right now, where am I feeling this anxiety? Is there a tightness in my chest? Is my back getting tense? Step out of the mind and actually be in your body and sometimes taking a few deep breaths can really help because something that makes anxiety worse is the more you think about your anxious thoughts the worse it gets.   NURTURE - You embrace yourself with love and compassion, and you provide that comfort to yourself. You’re allowing our anxiety to be here, but you need that comfort. Be kind to yourself, especially when you’re hurting.   If you’re looking for tools to help you cope with your anxiety, listen to this episode. 01 Jun 2023Ep. 164: Why To Rethink Your Drinking Even If You’re Not That Bad01:06:21
Are you wondering why you should rethink your drinking, even if you're not "that bad"?  Maybe you're sober curious or concerned about your relationship with alcohol, even if you don't consider yourself to have a "serious problem."  Perhaps you find yourself in the "gray area" of drinking, where your consumption doesn't appear problematic to others, and you haven't faced external consequences, but deep down, you know it's holding you back and keeping you stuck.  Or maybe you're simply tired of those dreaded hangovers, 3 am wake-ups, or not remembering the end of some nights. If you're contemplating whether an alcohol-free lifestyle could be better than your current situation, this episode is perfect for you.  Today, I’m chatting with special guests Sharon Hartley and Ben Anderson, the hosts of the Over The Influence alcohol-free podcast. Sharon and Ben both live alcohol-free and enthusiastically advocate for the joys of sobriety because giving up alcohol has completely transformed their lives. 08 Jun 2023Ep. 165: Can Motivational Psychology Change Your Drinking Habits?01:07:10
If you're ready to take control of your relationship with alcohol and embrace positive change, exploring a motivational psychology approach can be a game-changer.  Motivational psychology can help you change your drinking habits by giving you a framework to understand the driving forces behind your drinking behavior, overcome challenges, and cultivate a positive mindset.   Changing your relationship with alcohol is hard for so many reasons. You’re breaking long-standing habits, social rituals, go-to coping mechanisms and navigating daily cravings and temptations. But by identifying your causes of stress, self-doubt and negative thought patterns, you get to overcome them and stay committed to your goals to live a healthier and happier life.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in this episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/165 Ready to drink less + live more? 15 Jun 2023Ep. 166: Nutrition For Recovery: How To Increase Energy and Improve Your Mood In Early Sobriety01:05:44
Did you know some of the most common questions googled in early sobriety are related to how to improve your energy and mood and manage fatigue and irritability?  It’s true. Here’s a sample of what people are asking as they stop drinking… How do you get energy in recovery? How can I be happy in sobriety? Why am I so tired now that I'm sober? Is it normal to feel depressed in early sobriety? How do you deal with anxiety in early sobriety? What are the hardest weeks of sobriety? Does giving up alcohol make you tired? What happens in the first few weeks of sobriety? Early sobriety fatigue and irritability are real. But there are ways to help your body heal through nutrition for recovery. Changing what you eat can improve your mood, give you more energy and help you feel better, more quickly when you stop drinking. I asked Dr. Brooke Scheller, a nationally recognized health expert and founder of Functional Sobriety, to share the principles of nutrition for recovery and how simple changes in what you eat can improve your mood, give you more energy and help your body heal more quickly when you stop drinking. 22 Jun 2023Ep. 167: All About (PAWS) Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome From Alcohol01:03:19
What is Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome from alcohol and why is it important for you to understand it if you’re quitting drinking? PAWS or Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, refers to a series of symptoms that can arise after quitting alcohol and after you successfully navigate your first few weeks of sobriety.  Think of it as a secondary phase of withdrawal from alcohol, which can hit a few weeks or months into recovery, or even further along.  There’s a lot of misinformation out there in the sober community about what exactly Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome is, when it happens, how long it takes for PAWS to go away, what are the symptoms you might experience or how do you know if you have PAWS.  So today we’re going to clear that all up.  Gillian Tietz, the sober scientist behind the Sober Powered podcast is here to help me unravel the mystery of PAWS. 05 Aug 2021Ep. 69: Divorce, Women + Drinking01:00:23
Many women find themselves turning to alcohol and drinking more during the decline of a marriage, during a separation or once their divorce is final.   Why do women drink after a divorce?    Divorce can bring to the surface feelings of uncertainty, loneliness, resentment, fear, regret, guilt, anger and shame for many women. These emotions can be difficult to cope with alone and women may turn to a bottle of wine to numb negative feelings. Not only can women feel isolated, but they also might feel the desire to celebrate their newfound freedom and independence by drinking.    My guest today, Krysty Krwyko of Your Creative Badass Divorce, is here to share how to turn divorce from a soul-sucking to a soul-defining experience. Krysty helps women heal and recover from divorce, shed the stigma, reinvent themselves and reclaim their lives.    Krysty is a life coach, educator, mixed media artist, self proclaimed book nerd and an indie mama of two teens. She uses the pillars of creativity and sobriety in her work with women as they navigate their lives through a creative journey process.   Tune in to hear us talk about healthy ways to cope after divorce, what having a creative outlet means for most women, why there's danger in trying to just push through negative emotions, and how Krysty has used her experience to support women navigating the shitty waters of post-divorce life.   For full show notes, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/69   Support and resources to help you reinvent and rebuild your life You can Drink Less + Live More today with The Sobriety Starter Kit. 06 Jul 2023Ep. 169: Are You A Gray Area Drinker?01:02:29
How do you know if your relationship with alcohol falls into the category of being a “gray area drinker”? That muddy space existing between the two extremes of being able to ‘take or leave’ alcohol and becoming increasingly dependent on it in a problematic way? Before Gray Area Drinking was even a term I spent years debating if I was just a “red wine girl” who drank socially like most of my friends or if I had a serious problem with alcohol that I needed to control.   It was a confusing place to be because not only did I love to drink but I also had a successful career, a happy family, friends who drank with me, no significant negative consequences from my drinking and no one telling me I should stop drinking. Many women find themselves in this ambiguous space where the line between social drinking and dependency becomes blurry. So if you’re unsure if your relationship with alcohol is healthy or problematic, or if you’re wondering if your drinking falls into the gray area, this episode is for you. 13 Jul 2023Ep. 170: Seltzer Squad - Staying Sober In The City00:56:49
Sobriety can be a serious subject but it doesn’t always have to be. And I love to find real people talking about their drinking and sober journey with humor and honesty.   One of my favorite podcasts to listen to to get a dose of relatable, engaging and seriously funny discussions of life on the sober side is Seltzer Squad with Kate Zander and her and former co-host Jes. So I invited Kate Zander from Seltzer Squad to have a real conversation about getting sober in the city and what happens once you decide to move off the barstool.  If you’re looking for an engaging, relatable and funny conversation about sobriety this one’s for you.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in this episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/170 Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson To find out more about Casey and her coaching programs, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com
20 Jul 2023Ep. 171: Why I Don’t Use The Word “Alcoholic” To Describe Myself (Or Anyone Else)00:46:27
Here’s something that I get asked about often but don’t talk about much: why I don’t use the term “alcoholic” to describe myself or anyone else. It’s funny because as a sober coach, the host of a popular sobriety podcast and a person who has been immersed in the world of addiction and recovery for the last 10 years, I should be the poster girl for being comfortable using the terms alcoholic and alcoholism.  I have spent hundreds of hours talking about women and drinking, alcohol and our society, addiction and different paths to recovery.  I’ve attended sober retreats, recovery conferences, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and have participated in all kinds of online groups and in person gatherings of people going alcohol-free. I also have many friends in the recovery space who use the term alcoholic to describe themselves proudly.  To access full show notes and resources mentioned in this episode, head over www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/171 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women.  My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life. 27 Jul 2023Ep. 172: How Ambitious Women Can Have It All Without Doing It All00:54:15
Are you trying to do it all and losing yourself in the process? I know what that’s like. When I was drinking I was completely overwhelmed by my schedule and responsibilities and saw drinking as my one reward. I felt like I was barely holding it together each day with the demands of my career and my family, paying the bills and the mortgage, trying to maintain friendships and a strong marriage, along with the doctor’s appointments, camp schedules, figuring out what’s for dinner and all the rest.  If your life feels like mine did, it’s no wonder we reach for the bottle of wine to try to smooth out the edges at the end of the day. Once I put down the wine glass I was able to finally see clearly that my love affair with drinking was making me more anxious and less able to manage my responsibilities.  So today I want to give you the tools (and the permission) to stop doing all the things and start doing the right things. My guest is Melissa Leon, a mom who climbed the corporate ladder with three young kids and was drinking too much to escape it all, until she decided to stop. 03 Aug 2023Ep. 173: How Alcohol Companies Target Women Through Marketing, Influencers and Social Media01:15:55
Have you ever wondered why you drink what you drink?  Why is red wine best paired with steak and white wine the right choice in warm weather? Why is champagne the appropriate choice for weddings and beer is best for a ballgame? What does it mean about you if you order a cosmopolitan vs. a gin and tonic at a bar and why are there entire articles written about what a woman’s drink says about her? So many of our cultural beliefs about alcohol have been driven by the alcohol industry. Alcohol companies target women to affect our beliefs and choices through sophisticated marketing, influencer campaigns and precise social media placements.  The wine, beer and spirits industry spends big bucks and a lot of time and energy to understand, reach and influence what we drink, how often we drink and our preferences for different types of alcohol. Companies pay for focus groups, influencer placements and brand sponsorships to drive our beliefs about what drinking does for us (and what it means about us) so that we will increase our consumption of a highly addictive substance.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in this episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/173 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life. 10 Aug 2023Ep. 174: 3 Stages of Relapse + How To Protect Your Sobriety01:20:08
Once you’ve gotten a period of time alcohol-free, how do you protect your sobriety and avoid relapse? It’s a question I get all the time from my sober coaching clients and one I have personal experience navigating, both successfully and unsuccessfully. I know from personal experience and from working with hundreds of women in private coaching that coming back to sobriety after a relapse is not easy or guaranteed, so I want to give you the tools to prevent a relapse before it happens and to make it easier to get sober momentum again if you do start drinking.   And so I asked Angela Pugh, a master life coach with 15 years working in addiction and recovery as an interventionist and trainer and the host of the Addiction Unlimited Podcast to explore the three stages of relapse: emotional, mental and physical, how to recognize each and how to utilize new coping skills to stay on the alcohol-free path instead of going back to drinking.  For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in the episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/174 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women.  My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life. 17 Aug 2023Ep. 175: What Can You Expect In Your First 90 Days Of Sobriety01:05:59
When I first tried to stop drinking I couldn’t get much more than 4 days alcohol-free, so the idea of 90 days of sobriety seemed impossible.  Looking back I now realize that part of why staying sober for 90 days felt so hard was that the first week was miserable and I had no idea what to expect for the next 3 months. So I want you to have the information I didn’t have when I was in the drinking cycle.  I asked Courtney Andersen, a Sober Coach, Podcast Host, and Author of Sober Vibes, A Guide To Your First 3 Months Without Alcohol to help me break down exactly what to expect in your first 90 days of sobriety. 31 Aug 2023Ep. 177: Self-Care In Early Sobriety00:30:23
Self-care is critical for setting you up for success in early sobriety. If you’re like most women who drink to reward yourself at the end of the day you’ve probably been going through life over-scheduling yourself, putting your head down to get through your endless to-do list, feeling like there’s never enough time in the day. You’re likely overwhelmed, overworked and overtired. And if you continue to feel that way you’re going to do what you’ve always done: drink to check out and tolerate your life and your schedule. 02 Jun 2022Ep. 112: Create A Better Life Without Alcohol00:58:39
When you’re stopping drinking it’s pretty normal to focus on what you're giving because alcohol is involved in most of your social activities, hobbies and relationships.     When I was a ‘red wine girl’ alcohol was a part of cooking dinner, evenings on the couch, date nights, girls nights, work happy hours, Sunday brunches, afternoons at the ballpark, vacations and everything in between.    In order to create a better life without alcohol it’s important to add new things to your life that bring you peace, happiness and pleasure when you are removing alcohol.   Lori Massicot, midlife sobriety coach and host of the To 50 And Beyond Podcast, has joined me to talk about how to create a better life without alcohol, how to use your time away from alcohol as a period of discovery, why setting boundaries will help you find time to explore new hobbies, and so much more!   For full show notes and resources mentioned in the episode, head to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/112   Ready to drink less + live more? 03 Mar 2022Ep. 99: Sober Celebrities00:42:41
Wondering which celebrities are sober and whether any of your favorite actors, musicians and models live alcohol-free?  You might be surprised by how many famous people have decided to quit drinking. Personally, I love it when a celebrity comes out to say they've stopped drinking or are questioning the role that alcohol is playing in their lives because it normalizes living alcohol-free and disrupts the narrative that you have to drink to live an exciting, fun and glamorous life.  Sober celebrities who talk about their decision to stop drinking can start a larger conversation about alcohol and its role in our lives.  When you stop drinking it can feel lonely at times, especially in the early days when you might not know a lot of sober people, so knowing that cool, glamorous, famous people have also decided to ditch the booze can help you feel less alone. 14 Apr 2022Ep. 105: Midlife Evolution - Embrace Who You Are With The Work of Brené Brown01:19:22
Many women look up in midlife to realize that while their lives look really good on the outside they don’t feel that good on the inside.  They’re smart, capable, and productive and work hard everyday to accomplish a lot. They take care of people, managing work deadlines and finances, business trips and family vacations, school conferences and day care pickups.   But they’re not as happy as they thought they would be.  They’re tired, pulled in a million directions, anxious, overwhelmed, accomplished but unfulfilled.  And often women in midlife are drinking too much to reward themselves for getting through it all at the end of the day.  The midlife unraveling can also be a time for transformation and evolution. I asked Libby Nelson, a Professional Certified Coach who has trained in the work of Dr. Brené Brown and is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator, to join me to dive into how to let go of who you think you’re supposed to be and embrace who you really are through the work of Brené Brown.   For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in the episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/105   Ready to drink less + live more? 03 Sep 2020Ep.20: Learning to Know, Like + Trust Yourself01:09:38
When you stop drinking, doing inner work around knowing, liking and trusting yourself again can be healing and empowering.    For years you may have been meeting external expectations and caring for others over listening to your inner voice and intuition.    By the time you’ve stopped drinking you may be so removed from your authentic self that you no longer know who you truly are or what you want and need.   Today my guest Tanya Ouhrabka is going to share ways that we can regain our “know, like, and trust” factor in life.    Tanya’s a Life Coach who works with women to shift their mindset and perspectives in order to achieve self-acceptance.    Tanya believes that when you realign the mind, body, and soul with the truth of who you are, what you desire, and your purpose - you “know, like and trust” yourself again, and can live a purposeful and passion filled life.   By releasing self-judgement and increasing self-confidence and self-awareness we’re able to be the healthiest and happiest version of ourselves.     As someone who lost too many years of her own life to self-critical thought patterns and destructive behavior, Tanya knows the power to change our life lies within us, not externally.      In this episode, you’ll learn:   Why to stop looking outside yourself for validation How to be empowered by your inner compass and inner knowing How the ability to know, like and trust yourself will help you uncover what's truly best for you How to process inner and outer growth How to listen to your inner voice and follow your inner compass through the guidance of these 4 pillars: Self-care Nourishment Movement Authenticity     Tanya is a survivor and thriver, former self-critic, and truth seeking storyteller, who is changing women’s lives as a certified life coach.   In addition to coaching, Tanya shares her inspirational story of transformation to groups of girls and women across the country. Additionally, she has just founded POWAR™, a community for women to authentically and transparently share and rise together.   Shownotes: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/20 Grab your  Free Sober Girls Guide To Quitting Drinking   Grab Tanya’s Free Guide Seven Days To Y.E.S. - daily focus objectives and mantras:https://www.tanyaouhrabka.com/7-steps-to-yes     Links and Resources mentioned in this episode   Connect with Tanya Ouhrabka Website: https://www.tanyaouhrabka.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tanyaouhrabka/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tanya.b.ouhrabka   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson   www.hellosomedaycoaching.com Casey @ Hello Someday Coaching (@caseymdavidson) Listen to more podcast episodes to drink less + live more.

Marriage after kids is hard. And for so many women, it’s enough to make anyone crack open a bottle of wine at 5 PM just to get through the chaos. 07 Jul 2022Ep. 117: The Problem With Using Alcohol To Joke About Parenting00:54:26
It’s time to stop using alcohol to joke about parenting.  If you look up for a minute you’ll see the wine mom humor all around you. On birthday cards at grocery stores, on cute hand towels and wood signs in home decor shops and everywhere on Etsy. “They Whine. I Wine”, “Mom’s Reasons To Drink: My 3 Kids”, “Mommy’s Sippy Cup”, “Mom Juice”, “It takes a village and a vineyard”, “This mom runs on coffee, wine and Amazon Prime”... Funny, right? Or not so much. My guest today is Blair Sharp. Blair wrote An Open Letter to Molly Sims: Please Stop Using Alcohol To Joke About Parenting. She’s here to talk about why the wine mom culture and #iwinesohard “drinking while parenting is funny” shtick normalizes binge drinking and relying on alcohol as a coping tool for motherhood to dangerous results. 04 Apr 2024Ep. 208: What to Do If You’re Just Not Ready Yet To Stop Drinking01:08:33
Have you thought about taking a break from drinking but then decided that you’re “just not ready yet” to do it? Even if we know that alcohol is dragging us down, the idea of stopping drinking can be so daunting and scary)that we can stay in the drinking cycle for months or years longer than we need to.  If you’re waiting for your life to get better so that you’ll be able to stop drinking, you might not realize that your life WILL get better WHEN you stop drinking.  Beyond FOMO and using alcohol as a way to connect and relieve stress, a lot of us are not ready to stop drinking yet because we have no idea how to actually do it.  So instead of stopping drinking, we decide to double down on being better at “moderating”, making more rules and guidelines for when or how or how much we’ll drink in an effort to keep alcohol in our lives but minimize the harm it causes.  So, if you’re in the place of thinking that you’re “not ready yet to stop drinking”, we’re here to help! I asked Julie Dereshinsky, a certified professional coach who works with high-functioning, high-achieving women who are questioning their relationship with alcohol to help me dig into what you can do if you think that alcohol is dragging you down but you don’t feel ready to stop drinking.  3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life. 19 Nov 2020Ep. 31: How To Get Through The Holidays Without Drinking with Jean McCarthy01:18:43
The holidays are both a wonderful time of year as well as a time that can trip up women who have stopped drinking, from those in early sobriety to those that might have quit months (or years) earlier.    A lot of us might get to November and December and think, I've been doing this not drinking thing for a while now. I've got this.    But the holidays are a unique combination of back-to-back drinking events + occasions, family dynamics, memories of previous years drinking, physically being surrounded by alcohol with powerful emotional and social triggers.     The holiday season can undermine your recovery if you're not prepared to navigate it in a way that supports your sobriety.   In this episode, Jean and I share all the tips and tricks to having a wonderful holiday season without drinking.    We talk about: How to socialize sober + reduce stress and anxiety around attending holiday gatherings Specific strategies for navigating Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas + New Year’s Eve Practical advice on attending + hosting holiday parties, traveling + staying with family or having family members stay with you What you can share with family + friends so they can make not drinking easier for you during the holidays Why annual traditions and the specific expectations around what events happen during the holiday season, who hosts, what is served, how long people are together, who travels + for how long, can lead to resentments + challenges for your sobriety  Why it’s important to identify your expectations around the holidays + evaluate how they might impact you physically, mentally and emotionally How to say no, modify traditions + set boundaries without feeling like you’re high maintenance The fun stuff: why to set up a seasonal or holiday ‘bucket list’ with ideas of how to make the most of this special time that’s not centered around alcohol Ideas for new traditions that can make the season more joyful, memorable + fulfilling   About Jean McCarthy Jean McCarthy is the host of the Bubble Hour Podcast, an award winning blogger + recovery advocate. Jean is an author of two books.  Her book, The Unpickled Holiday Survival Guide - staying alcohol free during the festive season is a wonderful resource about sobriety for people in recovery and for their families.  Her collection of poetry, The Ember Ever There - Poems on change, grief, growth, recovery and rediscovery was published in early 2020. I interviewed Jean for this podcast in episode nine about her poetry and her story.  Jean started her blog, Unpickled in 2011, and has continued to chronicle her alcohol free lifestyle. Since her first day of sobriety, thousands of readers have credited Unpickled as a motivating factor in their decision to quit drinking.
