08 Aug 2022Permaculture Basics00:39:31

Permaculture was found in the 1970s by Bill Mollison. It means permanent agriculture which leads to permanent culture. This is important because of how we have tried to industrialize nature and we consume everything. Permaculture can be practiced everywhere no matter the size or location of the property. It is a design science that can create thriving ecosystems and it focuses on solutions and not problems. This episode we'll cover: 3 ethics - care of earth, care of people, and return of surplus. The 12 principals of permaculture:

  • Observe and interact
  • Catch and store energy (solar, rain, food, heat, etc)
  • Obtain a yield
  • Apply self regulation and obtain feedback
  • Use and value renewable resources and services
  • Produce no waste
  • Design from patterns to details
  • Integrate rather than segregate
  • Use small and slow solutions
  • Use and value diversity
  • Use edges and value marginal
  • Creatively use and respond to change

Permaculture zones 0 through 5, and the 8 forms of capital:

  • Intellectual
  • Experiential
  • Cultural
  • Living
  • Financial
  • Material
  • Social
  • Spiritual

The greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only 10% of us do this, there is enough for everyone. Hence the futility of revolutionaries who have no gardens, who depend on the very system they attack, and who produce words and bullets, not food and shelter.” - Bill Mollison

The tragic reality is that very few sustainable systems are designed or applied by those who hold power, and the reason for this is obvious and simple: to let people arrange their own food, energy, and shelter is to lose economic and political control over them. We should cease to look to power structures, hierarchical systems, or governments to help us, and devise ways to help ourselves.” ― Bill Mollison

30 Nov 202212 Permaculture Principles00:40:07

Today is another deep dive into permaculture. We're discussing the 12 principles of permaculture. The 12 principles apply to not just gardening but many different aspects of our lives. I have included them below:

  • Observe and interact
  • Catch and store energy (solar, rain, food, heat, etc)
  • Obtain a yield
  • Apply self regulation and obtain feedback
  • Use and value renewable resources and services
  • Produce no waste
  • Design from patterns to details
  • Integrate rather than segregate
  • Use small and slow solutions
  • Use and value diversity
  • Use edges and value marginal
  • Creatively use and respond to change

The greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only 10% of us do this, there is enough for everyone. Hence the futility of revolutionaries who have no gardens, who depend on the very system they attack, and who produce words and bullets, not food and shelter.

Grey water is relatively clean waste water that can be reused to do things like irrigate gardens and flush toilets. This grey water can come from showers, baths, sinks, dish washers, and washing machines. You can retrofit homes to utilize grey water or use some simple methods like 5 gallon buckets. Using our grey water reduces the load on the sewage system, is better for the environment, and can save you money. Some important links:

23 Sep 2022Starting seeds00:36:22

Today we’ll go over how to start your seeds and some common questions you may have. Starting seeds doesn't have to be hard or complicated. It may be an initial upfront cost, but will save you money in the long run. Find my favorite seed company and grow lights below.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is an amazing seed company. They have a great website catalog, but they also have a free catalog you can get in the mail and a paid full catalog I have ordered the free one to share with people at work because the pictures are absolutely beautiful and last year I bought the full catalog and I leave it out on my end table in the living room. rareseeds.com.

To use these Amazon links please copy and pasted the https web address and paste it into a new tab on your browser. This was one of the first grow lights that I ordered. I liked that it had a built in timer (6, 9, and 12 hours) so I could automate the lights turning on. I also loved that it was on a clip so in my closets with the white metal shelves that would be a pain to adjust I could clip it on and easily bend the lights to whatever height I needed. This was also a great price point for me just starting with seeds. I do still use these grow lights if I am starting a smaller batch of seeds. I have upgraded to the ones below. EZORKAS Grow Light, 150W Equivalent Tri Head Timing 80 LED 9 Dimmable Levels Plant Grow Lights for Indoor Plants with Red Blue Spectrum, Adjustable Gooseneck, 3 9 12H Timer, 3 Switch Modes https://a.co/d/j8lO53f

These grow lights are amazing. More expensive, but more grow light for your dollar. Very easy to use. You do need something to hang them from. I did buy a mechanical timer to automate them turning on and off. Barrina LED Grow Light, 144W( 6 x 24W, 800W Equivalent), 2ft T8, Full Spectrum, High Output, Linkable Design, T8 Integrated Bulb+Fixture, Plant Lights for Indoor Plants, 6-Pack https://a.co/d/0GkejpZ
