So what about the big ones?

The Growing Season spends much of its time chatting about the newest varieties of plant materials to grace the aisles of nurseries.

But how about the monolithic entities that have dotted our skies for hundreds of years?

Bristlecone pines, giant sequoias and dawn redwoods have co-existed with humans for centuries and Jack, Lynne and Matt McFarland chat about them.

300 year old cedars and ancient cacti are also focused on.

Kori Kody joins the trio from California to chat about the horticultural elders that grace the grounds at Berkeley.

Sometimes you just gotta wear it.

In what has become an annual tradition, The McFarlands spend some time focusing on the plant materials that go into making textiles.

Cotton, flax, bamboo, oranges, apples and grapes are all revealed to be highly used to create clothing and even leather products.

Jack, Lynne and Matt discuss sustainability and how the "green-washing" of materials is making it harder to eliminate badness from the clothes we wear.

Enter the cow.  You're not going to believe how this creature figures into the creation of textiles.  Its a MOO-tiful situation.

The Growing Season trio dives into some of harshest environments on earth that boast some of the most unique growing conditions.

The International Space Station, Mt. Everest and deep below the earth's surface are all places that, on the outside, seem to be least hospitable for plant growth yet are flying in the face of those assertions.

The city of Sudbury comes into focus as one of the most cutting edge in horticultural thinking.

Jack, Lynne and Matt highlight plants that grow in salt and shade.

This week's episode of The Growing Season finds The McFarlands venturing into an extreme version of "what if?"

Jack, Lynne and Matt discuss the temperature on the surface of the earth if there was no sunlight.  Start to think about the implications of this.

How would we survive in insane sub-zero temperatures?   Where would humans live? What about animals?  What would they do to survive?

Energy sources, food sources and travel are all discussed.

All is not lost though.  Oxygen would come from sources that you wouldn't think, even though the plants producing our current O2 would be frozen off.

Matt stumbles upon a new idea.  Uh-oh.  Vitamin D and where humans would acquire it become an interesting chat.
