Joshua Torresvalle Velázquez's supernatural short film has taken the festival circuit by storm, and is an official selection for the Death's Parade Film Festival this December 3rd in Red Bluff California.  We sit down with Joshua along with the cast and crew of Desctructo to discuss why it's such an effective short, what how each member contributed to its success.  No spoilers will be found here!  

Synopsis: Ivonne is being harassed because of the mysterious death of her boyfriend Alex, better know as DÆSTRVCTO in the rap scene. Claudio, Alex’s twin brother and Ivonne’s lover, arrives to her appartement to tell her that guilt is killing him. Then, a supernatural presence manifests to claim revenge for all the acts and betrays that both have kept secret.

Jenna Payne is involved in many diverse projects, notably the sci-fi horror comic Zompire Vixens from Pluto! She has a proof of concept teaser for Hysteria : the story of a chronically ill and undiagnosed patient who takes matters into her own hands, along with two award-winning shorts on Youtube.  We talk about the advantages of developing a horror story in comic book form, insight into her upcoming film Hysteria and her tireless work in promoting other filmmakers through Disaster Capitol and Cinefemme.

Sinister Creature Con Live Continues! We bring to you Sandy Johnson who played the original Judith Meyers in Halloween (1978). She holds the title as Michael Meyers 1st kill. Join us as we talk with Sandy on why she came back to the horror scene after so long, and her experience with lifelong Halloween fans.

1982 was a good year for horror, and Visiting Hours - starring Michael Ironside, Lee Grant and William Shatner - continues that trend. Michael Ironside plays a silent, demented, crafty and relentless killer who has a fondness for praying on women in hospitals. According to Kevin Nickelson, Joe Flynn, and Al Omega Visiting Hours was not an easy film to sit through in 1982 due to the subject matter for the times, and William Shatner's role was criticized as being too campy and overblown. Regardless of its detractors Visiting Hours is a tense cat and mouse story worth the price of a rental.

Also in the news: catch the Death's Parade Film Fest at Monsterpalooza in Pasadena, California June 3rd through the 5th! Although we won't have a table we will be on site passing out swag and interviewing horror creatives. We'll be easy to spot: Kevin Nickelson is a towering individual and we'll have DPFF shirts on!

Horror veterans Robert Englund and Lin Shaye round out a well put together cast, running scared against the horrifying backdrop of Quebec, Canada. Oh, those crazy Canucks!

As we do with as many of our guests as we can, we watched the Midnight Man and walked away impressed with the finer points of the production, quality of cast and the practical effects. But not all films go on without a hitch. Today with talk with Travis Zariwny to find out what went right, and what could have used fewer hands in the cookie jar, so to speak.

We have been looking forward to speaking with San Francisco Bay Area horror writer Fred Wiehe for some time, and we finally got him on! Fred Wiehe has dabbled in all forms of written horror: from novellas to poems to screenplays and has also found time to teach the fine of writing as well. Today we talk about how Fred got into writing, his writing process, his latest works, and just how in the heck do you write a horror Christmas story? We had the esteemed pleasure of speaking with veteran classic horror film actress Pauline Peart. In 1973 she starred alongside Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in The Satanic Rites of Dracula.

Martine Beswick (born in 1941) made her striking film debut as Zora, one of the fighting gypsy women in "From Russia with Love" (1963). Becoming a Bond girl has been and always will be a very big deal in the movie industry and it launched Martine's career justly. On this episode of the Grim and Bloody Theater we talk about Blumhouse Production's Halloween trilogy which started in 2018 and finishes on October 14th with Halloween Ends. With John Carpenter's help Halloween reignited the franchise. Although Michael Meyers cannot never die, we eagerly anticipate the conclusion to this well done Blumhouse series.

Halloween is near and dear to our hearts. We can say with the utmost confidence that this iteration  of John Carpenter's horror slasher franchise is a cut above all the rest, save for the first two installments. If you haven't watched Halloween (2018) we strongly recommend doing so. Not only did Blumhouse convince John Carpenter to return but we get to watch Jamie Lee Curtis  as  Laurie Strode again. Isn't that worth the price of admission?

The film follows a family living in the remote wilderness as fur trappers. Their tranquility is threatened when they think they are being hunted by the return of a rogue wolf, and the father leaves them behind to track it.

Ben Monroe is no stranger to horror fiction, having written a number of frightful stories including a memorable contribution to Tales for the Campfire a charity anthology whose benefits were sent to the victims of the 2018 Camp Fire. Ben writes with the type of prose similar to Stephen King -- you can easily relate to his characters and follow a complex narrative -- which makes The Seething a standout novel. Outside of his recently published work we also talk about writing horror in the San Francisco Bay Area, his experience with the Horror Writer's Association, and the impact of working alongside fellow indie writers can have.

It's no secret The Thing (1982) is one of our favorite films to reference. It's a cinematic masterpiece in all phases, and stands as John Carpenter's finest work. Fans of The Thing have enjoyed numerous special edition versions, notably Arrow Films and Shout! Factory. The makers behind CreatorVC aim to best that. Today we are joined by Ian Nathan who directed the wildly entertaining Aliens Expanded. For that effort CreatorVC managed to wrangle the entire cast and crew including James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver (which is no easy feat), so the bar has been set exceptionally high for The Thing. When Virus premiered in 1980 it was the biggest product in Japan's history. An Adaptation on Sakyo Komatsu's novel Fukkatsu no hi the movie starred Masao Kusakari, Sonny Chiba, George Kennedy and Robert Vaughn. The film is a harrowing take involving a man-made virus that springs into the wild during a period of political and military unrest between the United States and the Soviet Union.

We tackle other disaster stories which bring about the end of the world or leave enough clues to keep us awake at night! These films include, 2012, Threads, The Thing (naturally!), Deep Impact and Armageddon.

The second installment in a planned slasher trilogy, we find Laurie Strode recuperating in a hospital under the assumption Michael Meyers is dead, but we all know the truth. Evil Must die! But it doesn't. Directed by David Gordon Green and starring the venerable Jamie Lee Curtis, Will Patton, Anthony Michael Hall and Nick Castle as The Shape, Halloween Kills serves as the in-between in the three movie arc. Candyman...Candyman...Candyman! One of the most recognizable lines to survive the 90's. Clive Barker's short story "Forbidden" was adapted to the silver screen by Bernard Rose who also directed. Starring Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen, Candyman was a harrowing story centered on a notorious housing project in Chicago which amplified an already compelling narrative. We're excited to see how Jordan Peele can reboot this flick this summer.

Today we host Ann Myrna and Steve Hermann behind Acrostar Films and preview their latest film Trepidity starring Taydem Shoesmith as Samantha, Magdalena Conway as Trish, Beth Metcalf as Melissa and voice of The Demon, Ashley Hefner as Allison, and Paige Bourne as Taylor. 

Trepidity is an independent horror film in the 80s slasher style. A group of friends get together in an old barn for a night of partying and for some unexplained reason, decide to call upon a demon thinking it’s an urban legend. Surprise! It’s not. Now they find themselves trapped in a barn with a demon which leaps from character to character until it’s ready to kill. Not knowing who the demon is in, the friendships are put to the test. It’s a race to see who’ll survive until midnight.  

Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. No one to trust.

Would You Rather (2012) is billed as a psychological horror thriller starring Brittany Snow and the venerable Jeffrey Combs which outplays its budget, in the sense the film is better than the money put into it. This is a credit to the craftsmanship behind the camera and decision-making with the script.

For many this film evokes memories of Ready or Not (2019): a simply child's game inverted into a tale of terror. David Guy Levy 's film has less humor but ratches up the tension and kills.

After taking shelter in a spooky old mansion, complete with a graveyard, they discover a Ouija board and decide to spend the night attempting to summon some spirits. But the group soon learns that playing with the forces of black magic isn't fun and games, and it's not long before they're head-to-head with all sorts of demonic creatures, shape shifters, and other forms of evil, all of whom are more than happy to pick them off in the most gruesome of ways.

Welcome to another episode of the Grim and Bloody podcast! Glad you're with us. Tonight we discuss the 1985 Saturday afternoon chiller Silver Bullet, based on a screenplay by Stephen King and directed by Daniel Attias. Silver Bullet is a watchable horror flick, but it's not without it's issues. Much can be said about the practical effects of the werewolf: however, the late child star Corey Haim shows us why he became the lead protagonist in The Lost Boys two years later.

The Grim and Bloody Podcast sat down with Nikhil Bhagat and we talked about the fantastic short horror film The Wheel, set to be released this February. 

The short film finds a woman, played by Molly Buecher, alone in a house while her husband is on a trip shopping for antiques to sell in their shop. When he sends home an old toy ferris wheel (made from parts of the original ferris wheel no less!) the couple has no idea the terror that is about to be unleashed.

For those who haven't heard of Nikhil Bhagat - his equally as impressive short As They Continue To Fall has now been picked up for a feature adaptation by James Wan and Eric Heisserer!

Welcome back horror enthusiasts! Today we bring you something different: a psychological thriller, in short form, done entirely by an all-neurodivergent cast and crew. Spectrum Laboratories is the non-profit studio behind the effort, and enjoyed screenings in Hollywood, at the Nassau Film Fest and the Diabolical Horror Film Festival.

It's always enlightening for us to hear about what happens behind the camera throughout the ages of cinema. John T. Sweeney stopped by the Grim and Bloody Podcast and does just that! As Kevin Nickelson later described the show: "John was a hoot and a half with a few salty stories working as production coordinator on films like Alien vs. Predator, Hellboy and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. In a first time deviation from the ordinary talk of horror movies, we talk about COVID and I speak extensively about my near death experience."

COVID-19 has taken a sledgehammer to almost everything, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. More and more stories surface regarding the virus and our collective experiences. We feel thankful that we can share them because that means we survived to tell the tale. 

In other news, Kevin has a new piece of writing out! It's his first non-horror article, "A look at Agatha Christie" in the 70's for the magazine Cinema of the 70's. The issue will be available between March 7th- 10th.

Steamboat Willie cartoon entered the ⁠public domain in the United States⁠ on January 1, 2024, as the work was published in 1928. Much hoolpa surrounded if and how the mouse would be used creatively by others, notably if the mouse would receive the horror treatment like our dear pooh bear. Not many did, except for Jaime Bailey.

Produced in 1985 Fright Night was a critical and financial success, and spawned a number of sequels, a book, video game, even a stage adaptation. Ready for some more Blacula? We know you are! William Marshall is back, and he brings Pam Grier with him in Scream Blacula Scream, 1973's sequel to the Blaxploitation hit Blacula. As before, William Marshall's performance raises this film above the standard faire Blaxploitation films of the 70's. His turn as the Nigerian Prince Mamuwalde is both gripping and tragic. Sadly the two films share very little narrative tissue beyond the titular character. By refusing to build on the emotional impact in Blacula's ending we are given a film where the support characters succumb to familiar tropes which ultimately dulls the story. Nevertheless, William Marshall and Pam Grief turn in A-list performances making Scream Blacula Scream a tolerable sequel.

The Evil, written and directed by Gus Trikonis, is very much a product of its time.  There's a light-hearted campiness to The Evil one can appreciate from the time of disco fever and bellbottoms which eventually would ebb away as we crossed into the 1980's and experienced bone-chilling supernatural films such as The Shining, The Fog and Poltergeist. The Evil is a fast-paced haunted house flick that can easily fall under the radar of contemporary horror aficionados, but didn't miss Joe Flynn and Al Omega's gaze as their reach in the genre stretches further than most. Andre Gower who played Sean in 1987's cult classic The Monster Squad and the follow-up documentary Wolfman's Got Nards stops by the show to talk about the eponymous children's monster movie of the late 80's. Donald Sutherland stars as a local Health Inspector who begins to witness strange occurrences and manages to stay one step ahead of the invasion until the end. Love it or hate it: The Omen franchise is not going anywhere! So long as warm bodies flock to theaters or pay to stream it, 20th Century Studios will continue to churn out sequels. Or in this case, a prequel.

The First Omen serves as a spooky catalyst to the original 1976 classic. Nell Tiger Free plays Margaret, an American sent to Rome to work at an orphanage before taking the veil. If you have seen any of the previous installments then you have a pretty good idea where The First Omen goes, but we do give credit to the film's pacing, atmosphere, script and ending which lines up nicely to the main event: The Omen.
