17 May 2022 | 104. Responding Instead of Reacting | 00:33:07
When was the last time someone said or did something that triggered you? How did you feel – frustrated, angry, unsafe? What did you say? The chances are you reacted in one of two ways, either by shutting down, avoiding the conflict or by saying something defensive back because conflict begets conflict. In this episode, I share a story, things I am learning, and leave you with a specific action you can take right now to be able to respond rather than to react to the conflict in your most important relationships. You will be able to use your words to redirect the negative force of others towards a positive outcome.

16 Mar 2023 | 179. Experiential Intelligence with Soren Kaplan | 00:40:22
Have you ever felt you had more life experience and talent than your job requires or even allows you to use? Today I've invited Soren Kaplan to the show to talk about how you can better tap into that experience yourself, and also in the people around you. I've long believed that what we know about other people is less valuable than what we don't know. That there's an enormous amount of potential under the surface. What's not on someone's resume, what's not in their current job title, and our ability to mine that experience in ourselves and in other people is, Kaplan believes, a predictor of our success. First we had IQ, then we had emotional intelligence, or EQ. This is XQ, Experiential Intelligence.

About the Guest:
James Rhee is the CEO, educator, and acclaimed author of "Red Helicopter: A Parable for Our Times." He holds the Johnson Chair of Entrepreneurship at Howard University and serves as a senior lecturer at both MIT and Duke Law School. Influenced by the caregiver values of his first-generation Korean immigrant parents, James has played a transformative role in business and education, notably reviving Ashley Stewart from the brink of liquidation while advocating for leadership rooted in kindness and numerical acuity.
Episode Summary:
Greg McKeown hosts James Rhee, an accomplished CEO, educator, and author of the transformative book, "Red Helicopter: A Parable for Our Times." Throughout the conversation, James Rhee uncovers his journey from a young Korean immigrant sharing his lunch in kindergarten to leading a monumental turnaround at Ashley Stewart. His story is rich with lessons on resilience, transformation, and the undeniable power of kindness in leadership and everyday actions.
James and Greg delve into the themes of chaos and intuition, discussing how modern life’s overwhelming noise can obscure our innate wisdom and kindness. James eloquently shares how the metaphor of the "red helicopter" symbolizes pure acts of kindness and navigates us towards simplicity amidst chaos. The episode also explores how the pursuit of success can sometimes stifle curiosity and diminish one's true self, with James reflecting on the years he spent following societal norms of success that ultimately left him unfulfilled. He challenges listeners to rediscover joy, connectedness, and meaningful human interactions in a world increasingly driven by digital distractions.
Key Takeaways:
The Power of Simple Acts: Small, intuitive acts of kindness, like sharing a meal, can have profound impacts and serve as a guiding principle throughout life.
Navigating Chaos with Intuition: In a world filled with information overload, trusting one's intuition can help navigate the noise and make meaningful decisions.
Distinction Between Intelligence and Wisdom: Being smart and being wise are distinct, with wisdom requiring lived experiences and the ability to ask deeper questions.
Rediscovering Curiosity and Joy: Success shouldn't come at the cost of losing one's curiosity and joy in life. James encourages engaging in meaningful hobbies and reading for pleasure to enrich life.
Human Connectedness: Emphasizing the Korean concept of Chung, James highlights the importance of genuine human connections that transcend time and space, vital for a fulfilling life.
Notable Quotes:
"The problem was very simple. There was a boy. I liked him. He made me laugh. He didn’t have food. I had some. I solved the problem and I gave it to him." — James Rhee
"I felt myself becoming less interesting, you know, like lost hobbies. I have a big passion for music. Stopped playing music, stopped taking lessons." — James Rhee
"Most of the books that get written these days, they profit off of you being confused." — James Rhee
"Intelligence is about information and skills, but wisdom is about the lived experience and connecting with the deeper aspects of life." — Greg McKeown
"Chung is like a connectedness between people. It’s a feeling of just... it’s a feeling that transcends linearity. It transcends. It bends time." — James Rhee

14 Dec 2023 | 255. Purpose with Samuel Wilkinson (Part 1) | 00:36:50
When medical student turned author, Samuel Wilkinson, challenged the common misconception of evolution suggesting a purposeless existence, it sparked a profound conversation that I am thrilled to share with you. This episode takes us through the riveting terrain of evolutionary biology. We delve into the phenomenon of convergent evolution, our conversations meandering down the fascinating lanes of how birds, bats, and butterflies have independently developed the ability to fly and how dolphins and sharks share a streamlined body shape. As we unpack the mysteries around the evolution of the eye, we encounter the intriguing pattern and order that seem to guide these evolutionary processes - an order that's akin to invisible forces directing a compass. We also navigate the intriguing intersection of randomness and order in evolution. Drawing from everyday examples, we question the belief that all is driven by randomness. We reflect on how random mutations can still result in a pattern and the importance of duality in principles. Moreover, we contemplate the implications of this perspective on our lives and relationships. You wouldn't want to miss this thought-provoking exploration, where we invite you to challenge your assumptions, unravel the intricacies of evolution, and perhaps, discover a deeper meaning in your existence.
Samuel Wilkinson is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Yale Depression Research Program. Dr. Wilkinson received his B.S. in mechanical engineering, summa cum laude, from Brigham Young University and later his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Yale, where he joined the faculty following his post-graduate medical training. His primary research has focused on depression and suicide prevention and has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Drug Abuse, the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

25 May 2023 | 199. Finding King Richard III with Philippa Langley (Part 2) | 00:20:16
Today we have part two of my conversation with Philippa Langley. Philippa describes herself as an ordinary person, and maybe she is, but she has achieved an extraordinary mission. She found, against all possible odds, where King Richard III was buried. Nobody else believed her. Nobody in the academies took her seriously, but she had a conviction, a sense, an intuition that she knew where he would be and that's why she kept focusing on it again, and again, and again for eight years. Her story has been written in a book called The Lost King, and now a movie by the same name. By the end of this episode, you'll be able to use intuition in being able to find and solve the right problem in your life.

25 Apr 2024 | 293. Mastering Personal Productivity: Lessons from an Executive Advisor at Google with Laura Martin (Part 1) | 00:42:54
About the Guest:
Laura Martin is the Executive Productivity Advisor at Google and the author of the book, Uptime: A Practical Guide to Personal Productivity and Wellbeing. She started her career at Google, where she taught people how to manage their inbox effectively. This passion grew into a full-time role, and she now works with executives one-on-one and runs the productivity program at Google. Laura is the author of the book.
Episode Summary:
In this episode, Greg McKeown interviews Laura Martin, a productivity expert at Google. They discuss the importance of aligning your current self with your future self and making decisions that your future self will thank you for. Laura shares practical tips on how to apply this concept in your daily life, such as reviewing your schedule and making adjustments to prioritize what truly matters. They also delve into the power of defining your top three priorities and aligning your calendar with those priorities. Laura shares insights from her work with executives, including the CEO of Warner Music Group, who successfully implemented this system. The episode concludes with a discussion on the courage to be rubbish and the importance of making strategic trade-offs to focus on what truly matters.
Key Takeaways:
Aligning your current self with your future self is crucial for living a fulfilling life. Ask yourself, "What will future me wish I had done right now?" to make decisions that prioritize what truly matters.
Defining your top three priorities and aligning your calendar with those priorities helps you focus on what truly matters. Communicate these priorities to your team and delegate tasks accordingly.
Use the rule of three to remember and prioritize information. Our brains seek patterns and grouping things in threes helps with memory and focus.
Saying no is essential to protect your time and energy. Ask yourself, "What is the worst thing that would happen if I never do this?" and consider if there are alternative ways to accomplish the task or if it can be half-done and moved on from.
Embrace the courage to be rubbish and make strategic trade-offs. Not everything needs to be perfect or optimized. Focus on what truly matters and let go of non-essential tasks.

03 Oct 2024 | 339. Navigating Ethics in Afghan Journalism with Saad Mohseni (Part 2) | 00:38:40
Saad Mohseni, the visionary co-founder and executive officer of Moby Group, shares his remarkable journey from London to Kabul in our latest episode. Born to Afghan parents and having traversed the globe, Saad found himself in the heart of Afghanistan in 2002, where his modest radio station blossomed into the nation's largest media company. Despite the Taliban's return in 2021 and the ensuing restrictive environment, Moby Group perseveres. Saad's story is not just one of business success but of relentless resilience and the fight to uphold an independent media voice in one of the world's most challenging regions.
Episode Summary:
Greg continues his conversation with Saad Mohseni, co-founder and chairman of Moby Group, Afghanistan's largest media company. They explore the complex political and social landscapes of Afghanistan, getting into the implications of the 2021 US withdrawal and the aftermath of the Taliban's return to power. Mohseni, a seasoned media professional and author of "Radio Free: A 20-Year Odyssey for an Independent Voice in Kabul," shares invaluable insights into the nuances of working within Afghanistan's challenging media environment and the broader geopolitical consequences of recent events.
They also examine themes of misjudgments and misunderstandings by US policymakers, the importance of multilateral talks, and the need for pragmatic, long-term strategies over short-term warfare. Greg and Saad discuss the perilous impacts of disengagement and the crucial necessity for ongoing communication and thoughtful engagement even with seemingly adversarial parties. They reflect on the broader implications of these issues, not just for Afghanistan but for global stability, emphasizing that interconnected systems and regional stability require continuous, nuanced dialogue.
Key Takeaways:
Impact and Challenges of the US Withdrawal: Saad outlines the flawed decision-making and lack of strategic planning in the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, emphasizing the adverse repercussions on Afghan society and regional stability.
Listening and Engagement: Both Greg and Saad highlight the importance of "listening competence" and ongoing engagement with all parties, including the Taliban, as essential for fostering stability and progress.
Pragmatism Over Idealism: The discussion underscores the necessity for pragmatic approaches over idealistic ones in dealing with complex geopolitical issues, suggesting gradual and internally evolved solutions.
Interconnected Systems: The critical global interdependencies are discussed, stressing that Afghan instability has far-reaching implications, from refugee crises to global terrorism and drug trafficking.
Leadership and Vision: Saad stresses the need for strong leadership and vision in addressing the Afghan issue, urging policymakers to look beyond short-term setbacks and consider long-term solutions.
Notable Quotes:
"Failure to grasp or understand a situation then leads you to stop caring because you know that you're not impactful.” - Saad Mohseni
"It was 20 wars, one year at a time, rather than taking a step back and thinking long-term." - Saad Mohseni
"We are part of the same system; our actions impact each other much more than we often realize." - Greg McKeown

Everyone is distracted by technology, and all of us have experienced this sense that our level of distraction is increasing. Even the speed with which we move from website to website, from app to app seems to be increasing in pace. And there's lots of people out there willing to talk about what we should do and how we can improve. But very few of those people have the data to help us think through this problem and what to do about it with precision. That's why I've invited Dr. Gloria Mark onto the podcast today. Dr. Mark has spent 30 years studying attention and the relationship between humans and technology. She's published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers, so the difference when she speaks, even when she says things that sound like you've heard them before, is that she has a detail and a data-driven perspective behind what is being said. In other words, she's more credible, she's more accurate, and it really is a pleasure to have her. By the end of this episode, you'll be able to establish and protect your peak attention windows of opportunity.

Many entrepreneurs fall in love with their products, services, and ideas, but according to my guest today, this is wrong. What Uri Levine argues is that you have to fall in love with the problem, not the solution. Uri Levine is a passionate entrepreneur. Unicorns, companies that reach evaluation of more than a billion dollars, are rare, but URI has built two. He's the co-founder of Waze, which is the world's largest community-based driving, traffic and navigation app with more than 700 million users to date in which Google acquired for more than a billion dollars. In part two of our conversation today, he reveals the formula that drove these companies to compete with industry veterans and giants alike. 12 Dec 2023 | 254. Bringing Relationships into Focus (Fewer But Deeper Series: Part 2) | 00:24:12
Join me on the journey to enrich your relationships, focusing on quality rather than quantity. In this episode I explore the significance of cultivating deep, meaningful relationships in a world dominated by superficial connections. Drawing on an analogy from the Hubble Space Telescope, I demonstrate how minor adjustments in perspective can bring clarity to our relationships, similar to how small calibrations on the telescope can bring the vastness of space into focus.
In our quest for meaningful connections, I examine the contrasting approaches of essentialists and non-essentialists towards relationships. I observe how essentialists prioritize deeper relationships with fewer, but vital, people, while non-essentialists often get overwhelmed by their packed schedules. I introduce the concept of a 'relationship scorecard' to help you assess the quality and depth of your relationships, suggesting that you regularly touch base and make small adjustments to sustain healthy relationships. I conclude this episode with a reminder not to wait until your relationship is on the rocks to seek feedback and make necessary adjustments.

This is a global institution that has a mission to promote the wellbeing of humanity around the world, but even before that, a rather young looking Dr. Shah was also the USAID administrator where he was responsible for leading and reshaping the 20 billion dollar agency that has operations in 70 countries around the world to develop even stronger results. Dr. Shah is also the author of a new book, Big Bets: How Large-Scale Change Really Happens. By the end of this episode, you will better understand the journey that Rajiv went on in order to be able to make this higher contribution.
