Episode IntroductionWe talk about the Satanic Panic and, in the style of responsible journalists, try to contextualize it to both the cultural and economic mores of the time. This is part 2 of our vaguely Halloween-themed conversation about the stigma of tabletop roleplaying games throughout a large part of the 1980s. Much like last week, we do discuss serious issues such as suicide, so just be aware. All in all, it was a good conversation and maybe a little more grounded than some others. Episode IntroductionThe battle of the acronyms. We're coming back from a recording break and catching up on the news we missed. One of those items -- the big one -- is the latest lawsuit in the back and forth between Wizards of the Coast and Ernie Gygax's problematic reboot of his father's TSR company. The usual race- and gender-related intolerance we've come to expect from them. Also, Hasbro has hired a new senior vice president for Dungeons & Dragons and we discuss what that means for the future of the brand, some prequel books for the D&D movie, and Wizards of the Coast once again dropping the ball with their own race-related issues but this time it's Spelljammer. Small content warning here, too: We read verbatim some stuff from TSR's "Star Frontiers" and the injunction document. ----more---- Links!Hasbro's new SVP of Dungeons & Dragons, Dan Rawson Wizards of the Coast/TSR injunction

06 Jun 2022 | Monsters of the Multiverse: Great or Grift? | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:00:25
Monsters of the Multiverse: Great or Grift?
I consider myself somewhat plugged into Wizards of the Coast’s release schedule, but this new Mordenkainen almost snuck past me. I saw “multiverse” in the title and immediately thought they chose the name to cleverly tie into “Spiderman” and "Doctor Strange.” There was an Unearthed Arcana in 2021 called “Travelers of the Multiverse” and it mainly featured player races associated with the “Spelljammer” setting, which we all knew was coming out in 2022. My mind immediately went there. “This must be some kind of additional bestiary for Spelljammer!” So that’s on me for not investigating further before I supported my Local Gaming Store to the tune of $50. I sat there alternating between reading and feeling miffed until both activities merged into a melange of mild dejection. I put it away and sat with the feeling for a couple of days. tl;dr: I changed my mind. Listen to this episode and read the rest of the blog post from which I pulled the preceding! ALSO: Be sure to join our Discord. Then you can do things like one member, Dr. Glaucon, did and correct me about the ability to buy certain things ala carte from D&D Beyond. I had no idea! He was able to do this because he's on Patreon and got the video version of the episode three days early! Be like Dr. Glaucon! ----more---- Topics

24 Oct 2022 | Tom Hanks Vs. Dungeons and Dragons (Mazes and Monsters Review) | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:06:17
Telephone, telegraph, tell a friend about the podcast. Also feel free to leave some five-star reviews on your podcast platform of choice! It really helps put the show in front of new listeners. Episode IntroductionTom Hanks is a true treasure. He's probably the best thing about "Mazes and Monsters," a 1982 television movie about a group of friends who take their roleplaying game a little too far. The movie was made in the period right before Hanks really took off, so he was affordable, but after he'd been in "Bosom Buddies." If this had been made any later, there's no way Hanks would have been in it. ----more---- Anyway. Even though it was made during "The Satanic Panic" and was the adaptation of a wildly sensationalized and factually challenged novel, "Mazes and Monsters" actually manages to be about friends who are trying to be helpful and supportive to one of their own as he's dealing with some severe mental health issues. We dunk on it a little in this episode, but I'll reiterate that it's not a *terrible* movie. Its production is competent and Hanks really shines in it. You can find it on YouTube and it's free with ads. Just be sure to read up on the actual history of the event that inspired it; we talk about it a little toward the end of the episode. 11 Apr 2022 | The Mind Behind ’The End’: Part 2 of Our Interview with Joe Donka | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 00:52:36
The Mind Behind 'The End': Part 2 of Our Interview with Joe Donka | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast
Episode Introduction Welcome to part 2 of our interview with Joe Donka, creator of "The End," the 1995 Christian Apocalypse role-playing game that was banned from GenCon. This is essentially part 3 of our Joe Donka Trilogy so, if you haven't already, be sure to go back and listen to our January 10 episode where we discuss the game for the first time, then go back and listen to the first part of our interview on on March 28. We're so grateful to Joe for taking time out of his day to talk to us and share stories about this fascinating and unique property he created. I had a smile on my face the whole time I was editing this. I decided I'm not even going to put time codes in this episode because it's such a fun interview that you really should listen to the whole thing. Obviously there are some mature themes discussed here -- maybe a little bit moreso than last week -- so keep that in mind as you're listening. Fortunately there was only one part where we had to do any bleeping. And thanks again to Joe because he sent us a copy of the Judges screen and two autographed copies of "The End." They're glorious. About Joe: Joe is a semi-retired (maybe?) game designer. The primary mind behind Scapegoat Games, half of Tyranny Games, and the principal creator of "The End," a post-apocalyptic game about the people left behind after the devout are whisked off to heaven, and the evil whisked off to hell. “The meek shall inherit the Earth” wasn’t a promise, it was a warning. This week, we divided and conquered to cover a couple of excellent 5e-compatible setting books from writer and illustrator Andrew Kolb. Josh decided there was no place like Kolb's "Oz" setting, while Brandon refused to grow up and talked about "Neverland." They have lore, unique stat blocks, maps, and tables - oh so many tables. In our efforts to become more pro, we sent Josh to GenCon as a correspondent because we were able to get invites to a bunch of industry networking events. It's a tale of long-haul driving, spaceship administration, and insomnia. Despite being a multi-year veteran of DragonCon, this was Josh's first trip to the Hoosier state for THE largest tabletop gaming convention. Josh was able to chat with Jess Lanzillo, the head of D&D for Wizards of the Coast, and Kobold Press COO, Alexander Stangroom, to get some insight about D&D's plan for digital copies of books for print buyers and Kobold's Black Flag Resource Document. Something to take note of: We had a TON to talk about from this trip and some of it is super in the weeds. We didn't want to spend weeks on the main feed downloading from GenCon, so we've got four other videos that are like 15-20 minutes or so a piece. But there was a lot to talk about. In this main-feed release of The Goblins and Growlers Podcast, Brandon, Inver, and Josh debate what works, what doesn't, and what's lacking from the new 2024 release of The Dungeon Master's Guide. There are things to like here and it's evident that Wizards of the Coast has paid attention to how the D&D community has developed over the last 10 years and incorporated that into these updated rules. Could they have gone further? Sure. Could they have gone into more detail? Definitely. Is it a useless book? Not at all. Just make sure you're the intended audience. 11 Dec 2023 | Does D&D’s 2024 Release Slate Excite You? | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:08:48
On Today's Goblins and Growlers Podcast
We’d planned today to talk about Kobold Press’ “Tales of the Valiant"/Project Black Flag, but had to change things up a bit. Brandon and a few of the other Goblins were at PAX Unplugged the weekend before last when Wizards of the Coast announced the 2024 lineup of Dungeons & Dragons books. So, much like last year, we decided to dive into the list a little bit to see if anything excited us. It's an interesting slate, but also very different from what came out in 2023. The 2024 D&D releases
We dig into detail on all these, including the potentially leaked and possibly incorrect release dates for them, during this episode of “The Goblins and Growlers Podcast.” Also, here's an embarrassing picture of Brandon from PAX: JOIN OUR MONTHLY GAMING NEWS NEWSLETTERhttps://goblinsandgrowlers.beehiiv.com/subscribe JOIN 800+ GOBLINS ON OUR DISCORD LISTEN, RATE, AND SUBSCRIBE!If you like the show, please tell a friend about it. 14 Mar 2022 | Power Rangers TTRPG from Renegade Games Studios | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:23:45
Power Rangers TTRPG from Renegade Games Studios
Episode Introduction Brandon pretty much goes full nerd in this one. He doesn't get a ton of opportunities to talk about Power Rangers and Super Sentai, though, so give him a break. This week he and Josh review Renegade Games Studios' new "Power Rangers Roleplaying Game" which, if you needed a hint, is based on the classic Power Rangers franchise, specifically the first six seasons from the 1990s. It originally was supposed to use the Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition system, but the developers made a late change and created their own system instead, but it still feels a lot like 5e. There are ups (relatively simple to get started) and downs (sloppy production) to this game, but it's worth checking out if you're a fan of Power Rangers. Do you own it? Have you run a game yet? Tell us what you think of it or what you might have done differently if you were the game designer. ----more---- Topics

25 Apr 2022 | ”Conan Unchained!” DnD Module: Is This Best In Life? | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 00:41:29
Conan Unchained!
Episode Introduction “The GMs forgot the secret of old modules, and we who found it, are just podcasters… Just podcasters. Not Twitch streamers, not gaming journalists, just podcasters. The secret of old modules has always carried with them a mystery. You must learn their riddle, listeners. You must learn their discipline. For no site, no site in this world you can trust. Not Facebook, not Reddit, not forums. Old modules, you can trust.” - Conan’s father, probably Brandon and Josh sat down on a Saturday morning to watch the first Conan the Barbarian film, and record an episode about the AD&D Module “Conan Unchained!” Join them as they share their thoughts on the work, expanding out to cover some of their opinions on early wargaming D&D, and general thoughts about the Conan films. About “Conan Unchained!”: Released in 1984 for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, written by David “Zeb” Cook, with art by Jeff Butler. Conan Unchained! includes four pre-generated characters, the adjusted rules for running adventures in this setting, and a full adventure ranging from levels 10-14. Topics

I'll share something with you all. The edit on this episode has been done for a couple of days but it's only now, late on Sunday night, that I'm finally uploading it, scheduling it, and writing the show notes. I'd love to be able to translate this into a personal lesson on time management, but I truly believe we'll find ourselves in this scenario again in two weeks. ANYWAY. In this week's episode, we discuss the further OGL fallout of Pathfinder eliminating the Drow from its lore, the upcoming Fifth Edition Planescape box set, Troika's new "Longshot City" superhero source book, and a fun lil' space exploration game called "Solar Crawl." Review: Critical Role’s “The Legend of Vox Machina” Episodes 7-9
Episode Introduction
Happy Valentine's Day. Brandon + Gabe = Review of episodes 7-9 of "The Legend of Vox Machina" from Critical Role and Prime Video. We're in the stride. Everything feels cohesive (except for Pike's story) and our episode notes are suffering from us being engrossed in the plot. By the end of this batch we're rounding third and are on the cusp of the final action in the season. It's pretty great so far and Brandon, who's ignorant of all things Critical Role, is fully bought-in at this point. Also: it's a spoiler review. A couple of notes: - Next week's review should come out on Tuesday because of the regular GGP release day. These third batch of three episodes of this 12-episode series dropped on Thursday, Feb. 10 (EST). The final three episodes will release Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. EST. P.S.: Minimal editing on this one given the tight turnaround, folks. Forgive all the “ums,” “uhs,” and “likes.” ----more---- Additional ResourcesListen, rate, and subscribe! Review: Critical Role’s “The Legend of Vox Machina” Episodes 4-6
Episode Introduction
Brandon and Gabe are back with a review of episodes 4-6 of "The Legend of Vox Machina" from Critical Role and Prime Video. This batch of episodes feels so much more cohesive than episodes 1, 2 and 3. The story gets rolling kept us engaged through all three 24-minute installments. After the somewhat bumpy episodes 1 and 2, it feels like the show has hit its stride. We're invested now and would be binging them for our own enjoyment even if we weren't recording reviews! Also: it's a spoiler review. A couple of notes: - No timecodes for this one. It was a much less structured discussion because we didn't have to rehash things like animation quality, etc. It's more or less chronological through the episodes. - Next week's review should come out on Monday. This one came out Tuesday because Monday was already the regular bi-weekly GGP release. These second batch of three episodes of this 12-episode series dropped on Friday, Feb. 4. Three additional episodes will be released every Friday with the season concluding on Feb. 18. P.S.: Minimal editing on this one given the tight turnaround, folks. 09 Sep 2024 | D&D Direct Debrief | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:13:05
We debrief on D&D Direct and talk about the new 2024 Players Handbook, the upcoming "total rewrite" of the Dungeon Masters Guide, and potential balance issues to look out for until the new Monstrous Manual comes out. Also, we try to decide Wizards of the Coast employees were actively trolling Josh on the pronunciation of "Sigil" during GenCon, and Brandon makes another push for new box set releases when we talk about the two new Forgotten Realms books coming out as part of the 2024 refresh. Somewhere in there we also mention the Dragon Anthology. We recorded a couple of longer Deep Dive videos for Patreon that will come out over the next couple of weeks. One of them is on branding and strategy mistakes that WotC has made throughout this whole edition refresh and the other is a discussion about the business end of third-party content on D&D Beyond. If you like the show, please consider supporting us on Patreon -- we're working on new content that we can deliver there, both podcast-related and non-podcast-related.

23 May 2022 | Hey, Hey, Episode Delay a.k.a. Brandon You Dope | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 00:03:34
Hey, Hey, Episode Delay a.k.a. Brandon You Dope How’s everyone doing this fine Monday morning (or whenever you’re listening to this)? So, I’ve got a confession to make. It’s Real Talk Time. I know we promised you an episode on Spelljammer Second Edition to dovetail with last episode’s discussion of the upcoming 5E Spelljammer. HOWEVER I’ve got no new episode for you this week, but it’s totally my fault. What happened was this: We hired a fantastic new editor to help us with production on the podcast. I sent him the audio tracks for the Spelljammer 2E episode. Except I didn’t. I accidentally sent him the wrong files. I sent him the new ones after I realized what happened and he’s working on them now. So here’s the plan: NEXT Monday, May 30, Memorial Day in the United States, we’ll release the Spelljammer 2E episode. And then, to say on track, THE FOLLOWING Monday, June 6, we’ll release another new episode. Josh and I had a really good conversation/review for Mordenkainen’s Multiverse of Monsters where we talk not only about the book but also the publishing strategy behind it and analyze a couple of interviews with Jeremy Crawford, the main game design architect for D&D. It was a really fun conversation! In the meantime, please Tweet us your frustrations, hopes, and dreams at @WayOfBrandolore, @BlackCloakDM, or @goblinsgrowlers. Also hop on the Discord at bit.ly/goblindiscord. Anyway, folks. Again, sorry about this one — it’s all on me. Sidenote: I’m recording this at around midnight on Sunday night. I just got back from a Bit Brigade concert and am full of the amped-up energy you have when you come back from a live music show. If you’ve never seen Bit Brigade, please check them out. I recommend any of their Meagan 2 performances. I’m about to brush my teeth and head to bed. I hope everyone has an awesome week where you set goals, accomplish them, and wow people with how amazing you are. You are amazing! Let’s all try to lift people up this week. Tell your friends/family/co-workers/whoever that they’re awesome and capable and can take on the world. Spread around the love. Talk to you all next week. Hope to see you in the Discord between now and then. Listen, rate, and subscribe! If you like the show, please tell a friend about it. 01 Apr 2024 | Hasbro CEO: Let's Use AI in Dungeons & Dragons | The Goblins and Growlers Podacast | 01:02:32
The CEO of Dungeons & Dragons' parent company, Chris Cocks, gave an interview where he talked about AI and Hasbro's research and development into how to apply it to Dungeons & Dragons. It's an interesting interview (link below the jump) that more or less spells out that they're likely to use it for some kind of virtual DM - but that's still just speculation. We discuss the likeliest manifestation of something like that and how they could make it work while respecting the work of human writers and gamemasters. Also, we do a quick preview of the new "Quests from the Infinite Staircase" and mention a Humble Bundle for tons of great RGP books from Magpie Games! Finally, if you're listening to this on Monday, April 1, tomorrow is the last day of the Kickstarter for "Born from Ice." Help them hit that Neanderthal stretch goal! They're so close. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lorenthegm/born-from-ice-stone-age-role-playing-5e?ref=c6djgl&token=7da324ce

But then they juke in another direction and make some unpopular changes to D&D Beyond! Kobold Press issues has some things to say about the reception of their Black Flag Reference Document, and Josh compares *just how similar* it is to D&D's 5.1 SRD (spoilers: a lot).

13 Feb 2023 | Scratching Our Indie Game Itch(.io) | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 00:46:38
Episode Introduction
Wizards of the Coast, D&D and the 5e SRD have been dominating the news lately. The whole situation has gotten people talking and thinking a lot more about cool indie games that shouldn't be overlooked. To get away from the 800-pound gorilla that is Dungeons and Dragons, Josh and Brandon picked out a few cool indie games from itch.io. One's about ghosts and another is about demons, so there's a definite trend starting, but they also talk about elder gods in a 1979 beach community, so there's that, too. It's a news roundup this week. Fresh off the heels of sending Pinkertons to hassle someone with pre-release Magic cards, Wizards of the Coast is upping the price of their D&D books! Fortunately, though, Kobold Press' "Tales of the Valiant" Kickstarter launched and it's already clocking in at more than $750,000, so you'll have options if you want to play some mainstream TTRPGs even if you bail on D&D. Also, there's going to be a 24-hour ad-supported D&D streaming service; I thought we already had one called Twitch. Also, we talk about Robotron and, bizarrely, Bibleman and his connection to D&D. Finally, from now through June 3, any purchase on our online store will have 30% of its proceeds donated to Richmond Mutual Aid Disaster Relief's free community market.

"The Machine" is "A serial journal roleplaying game for as many players as you wish by Adira Slattery and Fen Slattery. Gameplay happens across days, weeks, or even months. Only one person plays this game at a time, but many people play it in sequence." It's great fun and you should check it out. It's kind of like a hyper-detailed version of play-by-post RPGs.
Over a couple of weeks, several of us wrote and recorded journal entries detailing many attempts to create an unknowable device with an inscrutable purpose. Here's a description of the game from its itch.io page that really captures the ambiance:
The curse snuck up on you, and now you can’t escape. You’re not sure how or when it began, but every waking moment, you feel the machine call to you. Behind its words are music, beckoning you to build. The impossible notes echo in your mind, and you know what you must do. You can see it now, this manifold instrument. You will complete this infernal machine or die trying. We hope you all enjoy this sort-of-play. We'll do more of these if you all like them, so please let us know! Special thanks to Liz, Luke, Ollie, and Scott. Double thanks to Scott for all the production work he put into this. We'll see you all next episode for Unpopular Opinions about Dungeons & Dragons. Episode Introduction
Catching up on a few news items this episode, but first, we have to say hello to friend-of-the-show Joe Donka. He shot us a quick message saying he enjoyed our Satanic Panic episode. Thanks, Joe! For podcast newcomers, be sure to go back and listen to our "Joe Donka Trilogy" from earlier in the year. We tracked down Joe so we could talk to him about "The End," his Apocalyptic TTRPG. Then Brandon showed his support for Kelsey Grammar's hopeful return to the role of Beast from X-Men, perhaps the most perfect casting decision of all time. Then onto more frustrating things: D&D's Chris Perkins wrote a blog post talking about Wizards of the Coast's process for sensitivity reading and editing after a sad series of screw-ups culminating in racist content in the recent Spelljammer release. Finally, we try to talk fulsomely about Dragonlance and the new 5e release in that setting, "Shadow of the Dragon Queen." Something something Kender, something something Krynn. As part of this Dec. 6 release, Wizards is also putting out a board game, "Warriors of Krynn," that ties in with the story and combat of "Shadow." So it's basically a miniature-based wargame, which is an interesting example of time being a flat circle and everything coming back around to its origins. Thanks for joining us this week! Telephone, telegraph, tell a friend about the podcast. Also feel free to leave some five-star reviews on your podcast platform of choice! It really helps put the show in front of new listeners. 08 Jan 2024 | OGL One Year Later: Is D&D Stronger Than Ever Now? | 01:12:53
Josh was under the weather, so we were lucky enough to snag Noted TTRPG Attorney Noah Downs, Esq., to come and talk about and offer his on-the-ground perspective about the tumultuous last 12 months in Dungeons & Dragons and the tabletop gaming space overall. Do you think Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro has recovered from the PR nightmare that was the Open Gaming License controversy? I'd argue that even with last month's layoffs, D&D is far stronger now and better positioned to thrive than it was this time last year. Check below for all the topics we discussed.

Josh and Brandon discuss the very specific kind of writing you have to do for a public/pick-up D&D game. It's a lot different than writing for a home game, but should it be? Obviously, folks should do what works best for them and their players, but there's definitely value in examining how you write for your home game. 06 Mar 2023 | Dark Sun is Problematic | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 00:57:32
Episode Introduction
Is the mere depiction of enslavement enough to classify an entire Dungeons & Dragons setting as problematic? Maybe. Recently there was some low-grade Twitter fire about D&D's "Dark Sun" setting, a fan-favorite from the Second Edition era. The setting is known for being D&D on hard mode -- a mostly barren planet ruled by draconic sorcerer kings who revel in oppression, enslavement, and gladiatorial combat; it's a daily struggle to survive on Athas. Wizards of the Coast employee and Dungeons & Dragons executive producer Kyle Brink recently did an interview with Bob the Worldbuilder and, in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it mention, he talked about how we're unlikely to see a "Dark Sun" rerelease under Fifth Edition or One D&D because of a lot of the issues inherent to the setting. It was a brief conversation -- less than 30 seconds because mainly they were talking about he recent OGL debacle -- but it got some folks talking about whether it was appropriate to rerelease "Dark Sun" essentially as is in the current climate. Wizards has gotten a ton of flack lately for their seeming inability to get their arms around the lingering racial issues in their content. In this episode, we go through some of the original "Dark Sun" book to see how deep those elements run throughout the setting and think about whether the setting can stand on its own without them. Would "Dark Sun" be unrecognizable if those elements were removed, or are some folks just looking to complain and stir up noise on social media? What do you think about Dark Sun as it is now? Would you enjoy the setting if it were tidied up a bit to incorporate some of the cultural lessons we've learned since its publication? Should it have an essentially unchanged re-release? Unearthed Arcana: Travelers of the Multiverse
A couple of things going on here, so we've included some timestamps! First, right before we started recording we found some news about the Star Wars RPG we'd been talking about for a couple of episodes, so we give an update on that. Then next (9:18) we talk about the new Travelers of the Multiverse Unearthed Arcana from Wizards of the Coast -- Giff, Thri-Kreen, Plasmoids, and more. We know there's a multiverse book coming out, but does this mean we're also going to get 5e setting guides for Dark Sun, Spelljammer and Planescape? I sure hope so. Brandon mentions an amazing Dark Sun history video at about the 46-minute mark. Here's a link to that. It's almost three-hours long, but it's absolutely worth it if you want to learn about the setting. --- The Goblins and Growlers Podcast is produced by Goblins and Growlers, a Richmond, Virginia-based tabletop-roleplaying-game content and events company dedicated to inclusivity through TTRPGs. 22 Jan 2024 | Is this the END of a tabletop GOLDEN AGE? (Someone thinks so) | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:25:52
Good Goblin Monday, everyone. This week, we're analyzing an essay that claims we're at the end of "The Golden Age of Tabletop Roleplaying Games." As you might expect, the writer is using the 2023 OGL Crisis as the jumping-off point for their argument, so this should be coming right after our "D&D is Stronger than Ever" episode. The essay has all the hallmarks of a hyperbolic reaction that blows things out of proportion, but some nuggets of truth in there are hard to disagree with. Full topics breakdown below the jump, along with a couple of other brief topics we hit at the top of the episode. We got Slenderman. We got Skunk Apes. We got the Flatwoods Monster. So raise your beer, grab your hamburgers, and huddle around the grill to listen this extra-long episode full of aliens, monsters, and the dwellers of the Hollow Earth. E Mothmanibus Unum. Also, we got an email from a listener who asking about the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers RPG. ----more---- Also also, sorry for the sound quality on this one. Here's some behind-the-scenes info: Josh and Brandon usually record their audio tracks locally, and then upload them uncompressed to be merged during editing. Because we had four people this time around, we used Zencastr, an online service that records and automatically synchronizes users' audio tracks, to try to make things a little simpler. It's convenient, but it resulted in some compressed audio, so we're sorry it doesn't sound as crisp as it could. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's always better to record locally without compression. Thanks, everyone. If you have a cryptid you'd like to share, please hit us up on Discord or Twitter. In closing, here's a mural with Mothman flying the American flag. This photo was taken by Stephen Francia in 2020 and is an actual mural in Point Pleasant, W.Va. Telephone, telegraph, tell a friend about the podcast. Also feel free to leave some five-star reviews on your podcast platform of choice! It really helps put the show in front of new listeners. Episode Introduction The Unearthed Arcana actually was pretty reasonably sized, but it still felt like a lot because of the subject matter. Josh throws his usual prosecutorial shade at this playtest materials. It's interesting that most Unearthed Arcana seems to be kind of overpowered when it comes out. It's like Wizards and the Dungeons and Dragons design team is like "Hey, let's throw ALL this stuff at the wall. We'll see if anyone out there wants to pull us back from the edge before we make it an official release. A Grotesworth of Grotesques is a fantastic system-neutral bestiary that you absolutely should buy. It's influenced by old-timey scientific treatises from the likes of explorers such as Alexander Von Humboldt. It's a bargain at twice the price. We probably should have broken this one out into its own episode, but maybe we can get the creator on for an interview to make up for that. Time Codes

It's simple this week: We play Castle of the Winds and talk about it. The game holds a special place in Josh's personal gaming history. Castle of the Winds is a PC RPG/Roguelike from the Windows 3.1 era, which is a weird time for games. We get into this in the episode but, basically, Win 3.1 was very much primarily a business application and its native games were like a square peg in a round hole. Review: Critical Role’s “The Legend of Vox Machina” Episodes 1-3
Episode Introduction
Josh was busy this weekend, so Brandon and Gabe hijacked the podcast to do a review of the new “Critical Role” animated series, “The Legend of Vox Machina.” Gabe is a casual fan of “Critical Role” who fell out of regular listening because of the episode length. Brandon actually has never seen or listened to an episode of “Critical Role,” so he’s going into this series knowing nothing but with an open heart and open mind. Join them as they discuss the ups and downs of the first three episodes, the first two of which were essentially a two-part pilot, followed by a third episode that sets up the Briarwood arc. Spoilers within. Timecodes after the jump. These first three episodes of this 12-episode series dropped (to the public) on Friday, Jan. 28. Three additional episodes will be released every Friday with the season concluding on Feb. 18. Spoiler you won’t mind hearing: We enjoyed it. P.S.: Minimal editing on this one given the tight turnaround, folks. Forgive all the “ums,” “uhs,” and “likes.” ----more---- Topics

Episode Introduction Welcome to this timely episode of GGP. The newest Dungeons and Dragons release, “Journeys through the Radiant Citadel,” comes out tomorrow as of this release date. We discuss what we know about the release, and, because all the writers on the project are black or brown, talk about what it means for Wizards of the Coast taking some more steps toward better representation. Over the course of learning about “Radiant Citadel,” we went from “I don’t feel a huge urge to talk about this” to “this actually is pretty cool.” Check it out at your friendly local gaming store, and learn more about the many different civilization that populate this new hub location in the Ethereal Plane. Watch: What is the Radiant Citadel? Watch: Product Details We talk a lot about Wizards/Dungeons and Dragons releases, so we’ve decided to start including spotlights on cool/fun/interesting indie games we find on itch.io. Just because we can’t stretch them out into a whole episode unto themselves doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about them. Kicking it off in this week, we have “Salt & Strife,” by qwo. It's set in the early modern period and revolves around tearing down the powerful. Enjoy! ----more----

Push It Real Good
Episode Introduction Josh and Brandon’re here and we’re in effect. It’s been a while since it was just us on the show. They catch up on some personal news, as well as talking about Brandon’s latest TTRPG product selection, and some basic Twitter drama. Relatedly discussing an indie TTRPG system called Alter Arms. The meat of this week’s episode is Cezar Capacle’s Push SRD, a rules-light game design system, which Josh repeatedly calls “beautifully simplistic.” Topics

16 Dec 2024 | We went to PaxUnplugged. Here's our trip report | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:10:11
OMG WTF PAX Early access and bonus content on Patreon Subscribe to our monthly gaming newsletter Join the Discord We spent three days in Philly at Pax Unplugged. We suffered behind SEPTA buses that blocked intersections, had some pizza stolen, and were verbally accosted by someone claiming to be the Son of God. But the rest was fun and games. We got to hang out with our friends at Nomnivore Games, reconnect with Mage Hand Press and Flagbearer Games, see Potion Slingers' new video game demo, and meet a bunch of new people. Josh is using up the last of his Goblins and Growlers sick time for 2024, so Inver and I walked through the ins and outs of this year's Pax Unplugged with some observations about how it was different from last year and what that might mean for the industry overall. Be sure to check out the Patreon-exlusive Deep Dives on this episode where we dig into some of the economic and business conditions that could affect the industry in 2025. And, no, despite my best efforts, I could not find Xavier Woods anywhere this year. He must have known I was looking. But I did get to once again trade Dusty Rhodes impressions with streamer Captain Robear and this seems to be solidifying as the cornerstone of our relationship. 25 Jul 2023 | Questing for Glory with Jason Michal | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:20:16
You'll hear on the intro why we had to pull this one out, but this is an interview we've been holding back for a while in case of a rainy day. That day has come. A good while back, Brandon interviewed Jason Michal, author of the upcoming "Questing for Glory," about his book. It's the definitive history of the "Quest for Glory" computer game series from the 90s which he's writing in collaboration with Lori and Cory Cole, the creators of "Quest for Glory." While the book hasn't come out yet, it's chugging along and we're still looking forward to it. Be sure to check out the official Twitter at https://twitter.com/qfgbook. And check out the most recent status tweet to get an idea where it is in the production cycle: https://twitter.com/qfgbook/status/1665536807528800256 I (Brandon) absolutely loved the "Quest for Glory" series and it was one of my gateways into D&D. The games are on gog.com ($10 for all five of them!), so check them out if you missed them back then or were just born too late for point-and-click adventure games. 30 Jan 2023 | OGL Counterspell! D&D Published SRD as Creative Commons | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 00:37:59
Episode Introduction
Important stuff happening once again! Thanks to intense community backlash, Wizards of the Coast has changed their mind about creating a new, uber-draconian Open Gaming License designed to take the money of the hard-working third-party publishers who've been popularizing D&D since Fifth Edition came out. They've gone a step further than a lot of us were expecting by releasing the 5E system reference document into Creative Commons, which makes it, essentially, public domain and irrevocable. Josh and Brandon get together on another Saturday afternoon to discuss this late-breaking news. Has this been enough for you to stick with Wizards and D&D or are they going to take a while to earn back your trust? Whichever way you're leaning, this is a great time to broaden your horizons by exploring other systems. Hit us up at contact@goblinsandgrowlers.com or on Twitter to tell us where you've landed. Episode Introduction
First things first: We've launched a new monthly newsletter, the Goblins and Growlers Gazette. Here are your key takeaways: It's got some TTRPG news, indie game recommendations, and some hot takes from our podcasts and elsewhere. Also, showing us you're subscribed will get you 10 percent off our booth merchandise at conventions. It's a quick read and a way for all of us to stay connected a little better. Check it out and sign up here. Now for the episode: We have a couple of things to talk about today. Josh breaks down the new One DnD Druid and Paladin playtest materials, and then Brandon talks about Wizards of the Coast's most recent D&D release, "Keys from the Golden Vault," a most-excellent heist anthology. You can read Josh's playtest breakdown after the jump at the tail end of these show notes -- a reminder that the feedback survey on these opens today, March 20, 2023. Read More for the Druid and Paladin playtest materials breakdown: ----more---- Thoughts on OneD&D "UA" Playtest Materials for Druid and Paladin Overall:For something that's supposed to be fully compatible with 5e, there are a lot of terminology changes and class rewrites in here. I know they don't love this term, but it really does feel like 5.5e. Yes, it's compatible with 5e, but it's distinct and different enough to feel like its own creature. A lot of things feel like they're simplifying math and functionality to be easier to read, which is a major plus for accessibility. Epic Boons as class features granted to "category" of classes (Mages, Experts, Warriors, or Priests), is also a major plus for multi-classers, also multi-classers have simplified rules and blocks to explain those rules right alongside classes. There's not a ton here to be excited/angry about, with the exception of the changes to Wildshape. So you'll probably hear all about that, and little else, such as the innocuous changes to inspiration points. Druid:

26 Aug 2024 | An RPG for Kids - Chatting with Nomnivore Games | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:11:31
A great treat today. After probably about 6 weeks of comparing schedules and various people fighting COVID, we were finally able to get together and chat with Kate, Kerby, and Britt from Nomnivore Games. We've run into the Noms a handful of times at various cons and it was great to get a chance to sit and talk with them. While you might know them from games like "Dungeons & Dinos" and "Emberwind," they're here to talk to us about their live Kickstarter for "Nomventure," a modular, stat-less RPG for kids. As of release day, their Kickstarter is going for another week, so check it out as soon as you can. The KS has links to a free rules primer and a basic adventure so you can see what the game is like. We're so happy they were able to make the time not only for this chat but also for three Deep Dive videos on our Patreon that will come out over the next few weeks. 04 Mar 2024 | "Born from Ice" Creator Interview: Stone-Age D&D | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:33:48
Today we talk with Loren Small, the creator of "Born from Ice," a 5E-compatible setting with a few twists. It’s a complete tabletop setting that’s built on Fifth Edition but takes place on Paleolithic Earth. All cavepeople, all the time. Oh, and I should probably mention that there’s no magic, so everything is harder. It has some other cool aspects like generational play. BFI’s Kickstarter launches Tuesday, March 5 and you can check it out here (once it’s live). It’s coming with a core rule book, a bestiary, and an adventure path. I was excited about it even before talking with Loren, so it was great to hear how BFI came to be and learn about Loren's path to creating it. 21 Aug 2023 | Choose Your Own Adventure | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 00:57:52
Gather round and I'll tell you a story from long ago. Way back in the 1970s and 80s, if you wanted an interactive game that didn't require other people, you were basically out of luck. Fortunately, there was an option for those of us whiling away our elementary school days: The Choose Your Own Adventure books. These books had stories with branching paths that sometimes went is *extremely* weird directions. Josh and I snagged some CYOA books and had fun channeling our childhood selves with "Blood Island," "Surf Monkeys," and "The Unicorn and the Warlock." These stories took bizarre, abrupt turns that some times left us wondering "wait, is this for kids?" Also, I talk a little about the "Star Trek Adventures: Captain's Log" solo play RPG I picked up the other day.

29 Aug 2022 | One D&D and 2023 D&D Releases from Wizards of the Coast | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:02:16
Telephone, telegraph, tell a friend about the podcast. Also feel free to leave some five-star reviews on your podcast platform of choice! It really helps put the show in front of new listeners. Episode IntroductionCancel all your gaming plans for 2023. Wizards of the Coast hits us with two big news nuggets: the official unveiling of One D&D, the next generation of Dungeons and Dragons; and their 2023 release lineup, including a heist book, a bizarre update to Phandelver and the resurfacing of Planescape. The tl;dr on One D&D is that there are no more editions and all the rules are going to be modular and iterative, so think of it as Dungeons and Dragons as software as a service. And, just to make sure we stay on the right side of the law in this discussion, we're joined by Noah Downs, friend of the show, friend of us, and our attorney. In this episode, though, he's functioning in his capacity as D&D fan and podcast shill -- don't forget to listen to "Forgotten Paths." Anyway, join us as we talk about: One D&D, Keys from the Golden Vault, Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, The Book of Many Things, Phandelver as a full campaign (with cosmic horror elements), and Planescape. ----more---- Links!

We're talking about Star Wars. Despite making plans for what to talk about, we ended up half-remembering names of planets and totally forgetting names of Jedi from "Knights of the Old Republic." Anyway, we learned that the "Star Wars" RPG has changed ownership at least once in the last year. Josh was especially surprised about this because he loves the game. 05 Dec 2022 | Writing Adventures... on Deadline! | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:07:23
Episode Introduction
Goblins and Growlers recently resumed regular gaming events in Richmond after more than two years dealing with fits and starts depending on COVID numbers. We've always written our own, original adventures for these games, so starting up games again meant having to write some more original content. Over the years, we learned not only how to write targeted adventures that lasted roughly three hours -- the usual length of our events -- but also how to structure them in such a way to accelerate the writing process AND make them easy to execute for any of our game masters. Josh and Brandon, perhaps because it's cathartic to talk about writing on deadline while you're writing on deadline, talk about Goblins and Growlers' writing process and how to be efficient with it. We'll probably come back with another episode soon to talk about structure and how to write a compelling story when you don't actually control the actions of the protagonists. Review: Critical Role’s “The Legend of Vox Machina” Episodes 10-12
Episode Introduction
Here we are 12 episodes later reviewing the final installments of the first season of Critical Role's "The Legend of Vox Machina." Brandon knew nothing about Critical Role going into to this, so odes he want to keep watching or has he soured on it? Has the series rejuvenated Gabe's interest in Critical Role after becoming something of a lapsed fan? Also: it's a spoiler review. A couple of notes: - The final episode of our SEO-cash-in review series! - This was a solid and entertaining season. Amnesia Campaigns: Who Am I? Why Am I Here!
Episode Introduction Noah Downs (he's a lawyer, but he's a cool lawyer) returns this week to talk with us about amnesia campaigns. How fun is it when your players have no idea who they are or what they're doing. If you're not as old as me, you can Google "Admiral Stockdale debate" to see the first thing I thought of when we discussed talking about this topic. Noah's reasons for discussing this aren't entirely altruistic, however. He has a new amnesia campaign actual-play podcast to push. Follow "Forgotten Paths" on all the podcast platforms to join Noah and his players as they answer the who, what, where, when, and why of their existence. About Noah: Noah Downs (@MyLawyerFriend) is an experienced gaming, entertainment, and intellectual property attorney at Premack Rogers P.C.. Production note: I've listed the topics below in order, but no time codes, because I wrote them all down BEFORE I realized I hadn't trimmed some stuff from the beginning or added music, so they were all off my a few minutes. Episode Introduction Josh and Brandon discuss 1995’s “The End” from Scapegoat Games. This week we had the treat of an interview with Collyn Messier, the lead rules designer for Nations & Cannons, a new Revolutionary War setting for Fifth Edition. Because of a comedy of errors, it took about five months to schedule this interview and, unfortunately, we weren't able to publish it until just *after* their (highly successful) Kickstarter ended -- but the upside is that you can still pre-order! Nations & Cannons is a fun spin on regular 5E rules to adapt them to 18th-Century America. It's 99.999999% historical and is even being used as a teaching tool in some schools, but Collyn tells us to keep an eye out for "Benjamin Franklin, Banshee Hunter" as a module in the (not too distant) future. Name: Collyn Messier Pronouns: They/Them Role: Lead Rules Developer Brief description of your project and what’s unique about it: Your dad(s) and "dad-minded" family/friends will love this historical TTRPG! Nations & Cannons is a D&D 5e historical setting. We've stripped out the magical elements and added rules for black powder firearms, grenades, and cannons. We've added new character creation options that showcase the variety of different peoples and languages spoken in North America in the 18th century, and highlight the contributions of women, people of color, Indigenous Americans, and LGBTQA+ folks often forgotten in history. How to use gothic horror in your games
Happy Halloweek! We, along with our guest, Gabriel Perez*, talk about TSR's 1994 Second Edition boxset, "Masque of the Red Death" and, more broadly, gothic horror an TTRPGs. "Masque" takes the rules of Second Edition and lays them on top of a Victorian-Era earth filled with subtle mystery and magic. It's under the Ravenloft branding, but it's just different enough that you could argue it's being forced into Second Edition rules when it should have been its own thing. It's available on DriveThruRPG and, for the rest of this week, it's on sale! Check it out -- it's an interesting oddity among 2e products. *You might know Gabriel as the most-excellent audio engineer for our sister podcast, Quid Pro Roll. --- The Goblins and Growlers Podcast is produced by Goblins and Growlers, a Richmond, Virginia-based tabletop-roleplaying-game content and events company dedicated to inclusivity through TTRPGs. First, itch.io is implementing a relatively toothless anti-AI filter and second, crowdfunding platforms are finally having to reckon with the increasingly negative attitudes toward AI creations and weigh that against their desire to make money off of such projects. Spelljammer 5E and Hostile Takeovers
Episode Introduction A doubleheader of topics today. We start off with our best understanding/interpretation of the attempted hostile takeover of Hasbro by hedge fund Alta Fox. They're trying to get people on the Hasbro board so they can spin off Wizards of the Coast into an independent company. Maybe there's an argument to be made there, but it's a complicated subject and there's politics on both sides of it. THEN, we get into the real fun stuff and chat about the new Fifth Edition Spelljammer setting announcement. It's almost like they're putting out an honest-to-goodness box set for this! We talk about what the product is going to look like and go over the basics of the setting in case you weren't familiar with it from its Second Edition origins. Get your giant space hamsters ready. Second Edition AD&D Spelljammer
Episode Introduction Thanks for sticking with us after the delay on last week's episode. That was totally Brandon's fault! We're back on the horse this week to talk about the original Spelljammer from Second Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Once the Fifth Edition version comes out in a couple of months we'll see how different they really are. We were looking at the "Legend of SPelljammer" box set that came out in 1991. Spelljammer itself came out in 1991. It was a long day, so Brandon refers a few times to the setting coming out in 1991, not 1989. Just roll with it. We're all tired. 15 Nov 2021 | Return to Dark Tower | 00:32:04
Restoration Games' Return to Dark Tower
"Dark Tower" is an early electronic board game from way back in the early 1980s. It was pretty revolutionary (and legitimately fun) for the late 70s/early 80s, but you definitely could put it in the category of "reach exceeded grasp." Imagine if someone used the Antikythera Mechanism to play Fortnite. It was expensive, easy to break, and Milton Bradley stole the idea from the original creators. Now it's still expensive, mostly broken, and incredibly difficult to find. Fortunately Restoration Games is bringing it back in a more modern form. Josh and Brandon discuss the game, its history, and spend an awful lot of time talking about Orson Welles. Are you missing out if you've never sat and watched Maurice LaMarche going on and on in his Orson Welles impression? Yes, Always! Brandon shares some prompting tips, Tess pontificates on what the near future may hold, and Josh points out why AI will not be running corporate Helpdesk at any point in the near future. The Mind Behind 'The End': Part 1 of Our Interview with Joe Donka | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast
Episode Introduction We’re joined today by Joe Donka, creator of "The End," a roleplaying game set in the Christian Apocalypse. After spending hours scouring the internet for alternate ways to contact Joe, Brandon and I came up with a game plan for if we didn’t hear from him, then we both got busy with life as we often do. In the meantime, Joe reached back out to Brandon and agreed to an interview! The excitement is palpable. Get ready as we interview the mind behind "The End," getting context, and having some of our wild speculation corrected! 16 Jan 2023 | Wizards of the Coast’s Open Gaming License Fumble w/Attorney Noah Downs | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast | 01:25:32
Episode Introduction
Well, a lot certainly happened while we were gone. All anyone's talking about is Wizards of the Coast trying to roll out the new Open Gaming License and, presumably, put a lot of third-party publishers out of business with the royalty clauses et al. We invited attorney Noah Downs (@MyLawyerFriend pretty much everywhere) to talk through all the legal issues here, read between the lines of what Wizards is trying to accomplish, and predict where this will all end. Also, it was yet another opportunity for Noah to plug his podcast, "Forgotten Paths." The day after we recorded this Wizards put out a statement walking back a ton of the things from the original OGL "leak." The statement was a lot of CYA, but it was worth us updating things. At the beginning of this episode, there's an update segment where Josh and Brandon talk about their release and what it means going forward. Just where is the future of third-party content going? There's been some doomsaying about the level of support those kinds of Kickstarters are getting now compared to what they were. We take a look at some Kickstarters in the continuing analysis of the OGL fallout from last year. We also dig in a little on the philosophical differences between efforts like DC20 and Tales of the Valiant. And you know we have thoughts on Tales of the Valiant. Some days, we get dangerously close to analytical journalism.

Quick heads up: Our guest Alex owns Alpha Comics & Games and is married to our co-host. #NotSponsored Guess what, listeners? I’ve seized control of the podcast again, which can only mean one thing. It is time for a proper rant. This week, I’m joined by dear, dear friends of the show (and professional GMs) Luke (@WunderBardic / @BraveB33) and Alex (@AlphaComicGames / @LexieSunshine) as we sink our teeth into Veilguard. We talk shop on character creation improvements, combat that actually feels fun, and the thrill of finally setting foot in places like Nevarra. And then, oh, and then, we get into Tevinter. Or rather, what little we were permitted to see from the docks of Fishtopia. We break down the lack of cultural identity, the romance arcs that somehow manage to be both present and absent at the same time, and the soul-crushing realization that all our hard-earned choices over the years might as well have been written in dry-erase marker. If you, too, have thoughts on Veilguard, pull up a chair. Misery loves company. Find us online:

Was this an instance of sharing the pain in a demonstration of "fairness" by the parent corporation? Also, is that new free-ad-supported Dungeons & Dragons channel part of Hasbro's Entertainment division? If so, then maybe don't get too attached to it. Somewhat related to the layoffs, there's also some new kerfuffle over the use of AI art, but it seems like it could just be a misunderstanding from some folks on the Internet. Finally, we chat about "Tales of the Valiant," nee "Project Black Flag." When Kobold Press announced this new roleplaying system, it was before Wizards of the Coast juked everyone and irrevocably placed the Fifth Edition System Reference Document into Creative Commons. Now that the core of 5E is protected like that, is there really a need for what Kobold Press' own people have called 5E with "a fresh coat of paint." Ultimately, what's their differentiator? What's their argument for us to purchase a new set of books with largely the same rules we already have?
