21 Sep 2022#52 Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain00:32:58
Roadrunner is a reflection on the late Anthony Bourdain - chef, traveller, documentarian. Bourdain came to 'public attention' after the publication of his memoir 'Kitchen Confidential'. The documentary tracks his life from the publication of Confidential through to his suicide in 2018 - the film reflects on who is he was, his impact as a traveller, and how time can reshape how one is remembered. This was a particularly solemn one for us.

10 Oct 2022#53 Everything Everywhere All At Once00:38:23
Everything Everywhere All at Once was described by the New York Times as a 'swirl of genre anarchy'. Pinned as the 'anti-Marvel' this movie bends time and makes you think about how your life can be reimagined. How you ask? Through a multiverse bagel. Yes. Sounds absurd? That's what this movie is - absurd. Through the absurdity there is also humour and redemption.

25 Nov 2022#55 The Banshees of Inisherin00:42:28

The Banshees of Inisherin is a tale of a fragmented and decaying friendship. Set on a bleak fictional island against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War, Martin McDonagh's latest film captures the dark and complicated relationship between memory and friendship. You'll laugh, you may cry, and it might just even make you think what living is actually all about.

09 Dec 2022#56 Rushmore00:41:52
Wes Anderson's tale about an eccentric teenager at Houston's Rushmore Academy is a fantastic watch. Max Fischer's obsession with his teacher Rosemary Cross, and his love for extra-curricular activities encapsulate an almost idealistic, possibly broken American Dream. This one goes down in the Glacé archives - what a tale!

30 Dec 2022#57 Pinocchio00:33:12
In 1883 Carlo Collodi published 'The Adventures of Pinocchio' - a coming of age Italian novel about a woodcarver and his marionette puppet. Guillermo del Toro's adaptation is set against the backdrop of Mussolini's Italy - a world where coming of age in a time of mass manipulation could be quite challenging. Del Toro's story is about loss, youth, age, and the meaning of life. Littered with del Toro's signature fantasy gothic, this one had us grappling with all sorts of themes.

06 Jan 2023#58 There Will Be Blood00:36:50
Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 epic captures a moment in American history that continues to dominate our economic landscape today: the formation and birth of capitalism. Set during the Californian oil boom in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it follows the life of Daniel Plainview - an oil baron - who discovers oil just outside of Los Angeles. The new American frontier is now one that is driven by the promise of eternal wealth. Bathed in oil, literally and metaphorically, oil is the very thing that creates Plainview, but it could also be the very thing that destroys him.

16 Jan 2023#59 Memento00:33:09
Memento bends narrative and complicates the idea of memory. Who forms narrative and how do you come to terms with your own narrative? Leanord Shelby, who suffers from amnesia, is trying to identify who attacked him and who killed his wife. The film captures the mechanics of trying to remember when one's memory is fragmented. A mind-bending project for Nolan!

23 Jan 2023#60 Empire Of Light00:38:30
The mechanics of cinema have the ability to heal trauma. That's what we're meant to think in Sam Mendes' latest picture, Empire of Light. Set in 1980s Margate, we see Hilary and Stephen, two people carrying very different traumas on their shoulders - patriarchy, racial violence, misogyny. The place where this seems to melt away is the cinema space. Can cinema really have the power to heal? Check out our latest take!

Sammy Fabelman saw his first motion picture in 1952. This was the birth of a love story with film that would last his entire life. Speilberg's latest epic is a love letter to American cinema - how film can create as much as it can obscure, cure broken hearts, create meaning in a world of flux. Fabelman's journey from New Jersey to Arizona, from Northern California to Hollywood, this movie gives us an insight into where it all began for Fabelman... sorry Speilberg! 02 May 2023#66 La Haine00:36:17
Mathieu Kassovitz's 1995 film La Haine deconstructs race, class and gender in a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Paris. In the aftermath of a riot against police violence in the banlieue, Vinz, Saïd and Hubert navigate their way through their neighbourhoods gripped by poverty and anger - this film blends comedy with pathos, complicates preconceptions of Paris, and contextualises constructs of race and class in the face of state power. 21 Jun 2023A Conversation With Damian Spandley (Director of Programme & Distribution Sales - Curzon)01:00:11

The summer season is finally upon us and what a first episode we have for you. Marcus popped along to the Curzon Cinema in Hoxton to record an immensely insightful and wide ranging conversation with Curzon's Director of Programme and Distribution Sales, Damian Spandley.

Recorded on location at Curzon Hoxton in London, the pair sat down in the main screen of the cinema to discuss exactly what goes into programming the film selection at such an eclectic cinema chain like Curzon as well as flipping to the other side of the industry to discuss the intricacies of film distribution via Curzon's distribution arm, Curzon Film.

As cinema lovers at The Glacé Film Club, this conversation provided an amazing peek behind the curtain of an industry we all adore for its output, but don't necessarily know a whole bunch about the inner workings of.

A huge thanks to Curzon for facilitating this conversation and to Damian for what was a fascinating conversation.

If you've never been to a Curzon cinema and want to find out where your nearest one is, head over to their website.

Curzon Home Cinema is their on-demand service where they release their own titles online on the same day and date as in their cinemas.

29 Jun 2023#68 12 Angry Men00:34:04
Henry Fonda is the voice of reason and morality in this 1957 courtroom drama, 12 Angry Men. The film calls into question the integrity of a legal system dripping with masculine doubt and barbarity - 12 men must determine the guilt or innocence of another young man accused of killing his abusive father. At what point does the system save the system? Check out the latest review of the "Summer Season" at The Glacé Film Club.

05 Jul 2023#69 Asteroid City00:38:47
Wes Anderson's latest kitschy exploration of narrative and American consciousness sees an all-star cast question their sense of self after an encounter with an alien in the fictional 'frontier' city of Asteroid. A family buries their dead mother in a tupperware box in the desert, plots of land can be bought from vending machines, and the government imposes a lockdown. 19 Jul 2023A Conversation With Dean Cross (Senior Screen Content Manager - Vue)00:52:09

It's conversation time and this weeks guest from the world of cinema is Dean Cross. Dean is the Senior Screen Content Manager at Vue across the UK & Ireland. Marcus paid him a visit at Vue's Shepherd's Bush site in London to engage in a conversation full of film passion and excitement for everything on the big screen.

Recorded on location at the Vue Cinema in Sheppard's Bush, Dean shares with Marcus some really unique insights into what goes into scheduling so many films across a huge selection of screens, what Dean's role involves and the involvement Vue have with the major production companies throughout the filmmaking process. Sat amongst the seating in one of their cinema screens, the location made for the perfect setting to dive into all of these topics.

Once again, this was an amazing peek behind the curtain of the industry we all love so much. If how huge films are made and then put on the screen intrigues you, this is the episode for you. It'll become clear to your right from the beginning how passionate Dean is about film and that passion is something we always love on this podcast.

26 Jul 2023#71 Oppenheimer00:45:33
Christopher Nolan's latest epic charts the life of Robert Oppenheimer, a pivotal physicist in the development of the atomic bomb. The film poses the question: Is science good for man? It would have been easy for Nolan to film a picture about the glorification of an American victory against Japan, but he doesn't. It's about masculine fetish power, intellectual hubris, and the use of science to develop an industrial-military complex. Check out our review of the latest Nolan epic!

02 Aug 2023#72 Barbie00:38:42
Greta Gerwig has produced something interesting here - framing gender as two extremes can be damaging, finding the space in between is how we can make sense of ourselves. Barbieland, drenched in pink, a dreamy matriarch utopia is set against the real world - a patriarchy where neoliberalism rules. Barbie asks us to think - are these two extremes going to help us progress as a society? Check out the latest review.

11 Mar 2024#88 The Zone of Interest00:35:18
Jonathan Glazer's latest film, The Zone of Interest, is a powerful reflection on genocide in 1940s Europe. Combining Kubrick-esque cinematography with documentary-style precision, Glazer's film speaks to the present as a warning, that humans have historically and are presently, complicit in mass genocide. Silence is not an option. It pushes us to think about the weight of history and how it rests on our present - a powerful and solemn contribution to Holocaust study. Check out the latest review.

15 Mar 2024A Conversation With Neil Jeram-Croft (Festival Director at Manchester Film Festival)00:50:13

In conversation with Marcus in the latest episode is Festival Director at Manchester Film Festival, Neil Jeram-Croft.

The 10th edition of the film festival begins on the 15th March running until 24th March 2024. Neil very kindly sat down with Marcus to share stories about how he started the festival a decade ago, what attendees can expect from the festival and what drives him and the team to keep growing the festival that is now such a big part of the UK film scene.

Film festivals are integral to the film industry so hearing from someone at the heart of the festival scene is a real insight. We're big believers in bringing people together around film and film festivals are absolutely the place to do this. So hearing from Neil and the reasons why film drives him so much is yet another reason to get out there and get involved with a festival like Manchester.

08 Apr 2024#89 American Fiction00:32:37
Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut, American Fiction, follows the story of writer Thelonius ‘Monk’ Ellison - he’s disillusioned with how black Americans are portrayed through literature. He decides to write a satirical ‘black’ book to highlight the essentialism of race politics. A comment on race, narrative, and history, this sees Jeffrey Wright give a stunning performance, challenging the zeitgeist of race politics.

14 Jun 2024#91 The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar00:34:47
Wes Anderson's latest adaptation of a Roald Dahl anthology is a meditation on how we make sense of what we see, beyond what’s immediately visible. Henry Sugar is a bachelor who discovers a medical journal about a man who can see without his eyes. It suggests that reality can be something that is felt and thought rather than literally ‘seen’. Phantasmagorical in nature, as always Anderson's picture is a masterclass in set design, laden with quirky intricacies. A toast to Henry Sugar and what can - and can't - be seen, only imagined.

Kinds of Kindness is a bizarre exploration of human desire - Yorgos Lanthimos isn't kind to the viewer with this cinematic triptych. We were left wanting some more kindness.
