Dee and Carol talk about flowers in their lawns, including crocuses, glory of the snow, violets, and more.  Then it is on to root crops and some of their favorites, including radishes, turnips and beets, and whether or not the phase of the moon at the time of planting makes a difference. Dee's husband is channeling Monty Don and Carol's sister wants to grow one of "every kind of vegetable you can grow in Indiana."  They wrap up this episode talking about the latest research on growing tomatoes around walnut trees, presented in a new bulletin from Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott, PhD at the University of Washington.  Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter where we are the Gardenangelists. 26 Mar 2019E21 - Daffodils and the How and Why of a Basic Vegetable Garden00:42:19

Send us a text

The Gardenangelists, Dee and Carol, talk about daffodils and how easy they are to grow and how most critters won't touch them.  And for those new to growing vegetables, they cover a range of topics including the benefits of raised beds and which plants to grow from seed and which to buy plants for.  One of the best reasons to grow your own vegetables is to ensure you are getting vegetable grown without pesticides! For example,  easy-to-grow kale has been named number 3 in the Dirty Dozen of pesticide-laden vegetables. But kale is so good for you. Grow your own or buy organic.  If you'd like to make your own kale chips, Dee has a recipe on her blog.

For all the best dirt, they recommend listeners tune in to episodes of BBC's Gardeners World with host Monty Don. New episodes are sometimes available for a short time on YouTube and past seasons are available through streaming services, including BritBox.

Want to know which flowers to plant for pollinators? Carol and Dee discuss easy to grow annuals and perennials that provide pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies. To follow the migration of monarchs, check out the Journey North website.  For more information in general on monarchs, we recommend The Monarch: Saving Our Most-Loved Butterfly by Kylee Baumle (affiliate link).

For more information on some of the flowers mentioned:

Salvias, milkweeds--check for which ones are native in your area. For more nectar plants, check out the Xerces Society.

Agastaches: the only one successful planted in the garden for Dee has been ‘Bolero'. Carol has done well  ‘Blue Fortune’ which doesn’t bloom until later in the season but then blooms until a killing frost.

‘Nectarwand Red’ false vervain, Stachytarpheta, is the best of the false vervains in Dee’s garden. She bought it at Bustani Plant Farm. It’s their introduction, but may become more available at other nurseries soon.

Chives and borage, lavender ‘SuperBlue’ and ‘Phenomenal and thyme are samples of herbs that are nectar powerhouses!

Carol and Dee also provided tips on how to be care for vegetable seedlings with proper light, water, and hardening off.  Almost everyone needs to provide supplemental light for seedlings and go slowly with the hardening off to ensure success.

09 Apr 2019Snapdragons, Turnips and the Signs of Spring00:38:17

Send us a text

Snapdragons, Turnips and the Signs of Spring!

Flowers: Snapdragons
All about snapdragons. Antirrhinum majus is a short-lived perennial most often grown as annuals in colder climates. It is winter hardy in zones 7 - 10.  They come in all colors and sizes and are fun for kids to grow. There is also another snapdragon, called Spanish snapdragon, Antirrhinum hispanicum, which is hardy to zone 6, maybe 5. Sometimes referred to as creeping snapdragons because they aren’t tall upright plants.

Antirrhinum used to be treated within the family Scrophulariaceae, but studies of DNA sequences have led to its inclusion in a vastly enlarged family Plantaginaceae within the tribe Antirrhineae.”

‘Rocket’ is a tall snapdragon, easy to find in most garden centers.  Burpee has some snapdragons for hanging baskets: the Candy Showers series.  Plus Madame Butterfly which is double-flowering:

How to care for snapdragons.  Treat mostly as annuals. They will tolerate some light frost. Keep cutting them back to encourage rebloom.  Can be planted in a flower border or also do well in containers. They are easy to grow from seed indoors, but probably a little late to do that this year. Needs about 12 weeks before frost-free date. Unless sowing for fall.

Kind of an old-fashioned flower (can remember from our childhood so we know it is old) but new varieties such as the trailing type for hanging baskets, are bringing them back in favor a bit. They are fun for kids because you can pinch off the florets and then squeeze them between your thumb and finger to make them look like a dragon open and closing its mouth.

Veggies: Turnips
They are several different varieties of turnips other than the classic Purple Top.

Johnny’s Selected Seeds has Hakurei, Purple Top and Scarlet Queen.

Burpee has  Tokyo Cross which is ready in about 35 days and Golden Globe, amongst others.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds has Nagasaki Akari Kabu. Dee is growing it this year.

Turnips prefer soils that are 50ºF or warmer to germinate. (Yes, soil temperature is a thing and if you want to know your soil’s temp, buy a Soil Thermometer (affiliate link)).

They need up to 70 days for full maturity so don’t plant too late, but you can plant all the way until 70 days before your usual frost date. For Carol that would be about mid-August for the last sowing.

There are all kinds of recipes online for cooking turnips,

17 Apr 2019Easter Lilies, Vegetable Transplants, and our Favorite Gardening Gloves00:42:44

Send us a text

Flowers:

The Easter lilies that you can buy in the store now are Lilium longiflorium, a type of trumpet lily. You can plant them out in the garden, zones 4 - 8, and they will come back each year. They like neutral soils, full sun, and cool soil. Don’t mulch right up to the stems or the stems may rot. Brent and Becky’s Bulbs has some named varieties including White Heaven.

Madonna lilies, Lilium candidum,  are often shown in church windows, but hardly grown now because of a disease, gray mold. Mary is almost always shown with a Madonna lily because it represents her virginity. Easter lilies, on the other hand, represent the resurrection. Madonna lilies like neutral soils, dry summers, can be grown in sun to partial shade. They have been in cultivation for 3,000 years!  Old House Gardens has Madonna Lilies.

Both types of lilies will bloom around June-July when grown in a garden. Both are also taller in a garden, 3 feet and up, than when potted and forced into Easter bloom.

Easter lilies are poisonous to cats ASPCA link.

Vegetables:

What to look for in vegetable transplants.

  • Plants should not be too spindly or root bound. Roots should be white.
  • Stocky, young plants are best. Elongated plants mean they didn’t get enough light when growing.
  • No flowers or fruit on the tomatoes, peppers, etc. in a young plant, that could be a sign of stress.
  • No signs of disease which might show up as brown or yellow lesion spots on leaves, overall droopy appearance or foliage color just looks off… grayish or light.

Plants should be labeled to ensure you get the variety you are expecting. No one wants to see Habanero peppers when they were expecting sweet bell peppers. Or cherry tomatoes when they were expecting a beefsteak tomato.

If your vegetable transplants are greenhouse grown, make sure to harden them off before planting them out.

Plant tomatoes deep, deep, deep unless they are grafted.

Looking for a new strawberry? Now is the time to plant Berried Treasure™ strawberry, a Proven Winners selections with red flowers.

Dirt:

It is always a good idea to wear gloves when working around plants, especially ornamentals, and wash your hands with soap and water after gardening. Euphorbias and other plants have a sticky sap that can irritate the skin.  Be safe, not sorry. Carol's favorite brand of gloves right now are Mud gloves (affiliate link)  Dee likes them too when it’s cooler and wetter outside. However, she’s fond of these bamboo gloves (affiliate link) when the weather warms.

Dee also likes heavy duty nitrile gloves (affiliate link) or leather ones for beekeeping.

01 May 2019Granny's Bonnets, Green Beans, and Great Books!00:37:49

Send us a text

Flowers: Columbine, a perennial in the family Ranunculaceae.  Aquilegia vulgaris (native to Europe) and Aquilegia canadensis (native to North America). Most cultivated varieties are hybrids of Aquilegia vulgaris. Columbine are usually easy to grow from seed. It's easy to harvest seed to share but most flowers won’t come true from seed if they are hybrids, but you’ll get something pretty. Scatter seed and watch them come up like weeds in the spring. (We call them a short-lived perennial that reseeds itself all over)

Vegetables: Beans, green and dried. Easy-peasy! Pole beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus) and bush beans (also P. vulgaris.) Pole beans must have support. Traditionally, people grow them up teepees. Bush beans are easier to grow.  So many varieties!

Look for beans that are stringless or be prepared to remove strings as you snap the beans. Carol likes Provider and Contender for bush beans. Dee has grown both of those and Blue Lake 274, a more disease resistant variety. There’s also original Blue Lake and Blue Lake 47. Dee also loves Dragon or Dragon’s Tongue with speckled pods that cook up yellow.

Dee would like to try Tiger Eye, a dried bush bean that’s pretty. It is supposed to be creamier than pinto beans. Lazy Housewife is an heirloom variety that can be eaten green or allowed to dry and then picked and stored as dried beans. It’s a pole bean. It was 2015 Bean of the Year.

Remember shellie beans? Probably only if you’re older. Dee’s grandmother grew them. It was just a dry bean that she harvested fresh once the pods dried slightly. You can also buy varieties grown especially for this purpose called shell beans. Libby’s canned beans have shellie beans mixed with green beans. Here’s an article for shellie beans with recipes from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The recipes with olive oil, garlic and sage or summer savory sound good.

Dirt: Vegetables Love Flowers, by Lisa Mason Ziegler. Great book! Dee likes that Lisa is a champion of annual flowers (which have nectar because they must set seed), and she wrote about bumblebees and buzz pollination.

Carol recently won an award for her book The Christmas CottontailIn honor of the award she is givin

08 May 2019What do daisies, squash, and queen bees have in common?00:34:39

Send us a text

What do daisies, squash, and queen bees have in common. They are all topics in this week's episode!

A quote to start with...
“Gardening is an active participation in the deepest mysteries of the universe.” Thomas Berry.

This week we are harvesting radishes, lettuce, spinach, and green onions.

Our flower this week is daisies, members of the Compositeae or Asteraceae family. (Same family, different names.)

We are reminded of this quote:
“Bees do have a smell, you know, and if they don't they should, for their feet are dusted with spices from a million flowers.” Ray Bradbury

Some of our favorite daisy and daisy-type flowers include:

Leucanthemum × superbum (Shasta Daisies) ‘Banana Cream’ and ‘Becky,’

Leucanthemum vulgare (oxeye daisy),

Erigeron annuus (Eastern daisy fleabane)

Matricaria recutita (Chamomile)

This week's vegetable is summer squash, including varieties like Crookneck and Cue Ball. Carol wrote in her second book, Homegrown and Handpickedabout how to get rid of extra summer squash, especially when it grows too big to eat.

Our dirt this week is another great bookQueen Spotting by Hilary Kearney.    Girl Next Door Honey is Hilary’s Instagram account.

15 May 2019Ruth Stout, Salvia, Sweet Corn, and Garden Sages00:44:11

Send us a text

In my early childhood I had some kind of vague yearning to Save the World from something or other; now all I ask is to save a small part of it from over-working in the effort to produce things that are good to eat or are lovely to see.” Ruth Stout

Ruth Stout got people to stop double-digging their gardens, which is hard work. Her books included The Ruth Stout No-Work Garden Book: Secrets of the Famous Year-Round Mulch Method and How to Have a Green Thumb Without an Aching Back: A New Method of Mulch Gardening.)

Flower: Salvia, both perennial and annul. Commonly called sages. Where to begin?  Dee and Carol grow quite a few between their two gardens including:

S. farinacea, ‘Victoria Blue’ ‘Evolution,’

S. nemerosa,’Cardonna,’ ‘Rose Marvel,’ ‘Blue Marvel’ (new for 2019) and ‘Blue Hill,’

S. guaranitica 'Black and Blue,’

S. viridis, clary sage,

Salvia officinalis (culinary sage)’ 'Purpurascens' is a purple variety, 'Icterina' is the yellow variegated one, 'Tricolor' is the white variegated one.

Salvia pratensis ‘Madeline’ - White and Purple blooms

Salvia x sylvestris ‘May Night’ - Dee doesn’t like this one. Carol grows it because it has “May” in it.

Salvia leucantha, Mexican bush sage

Salvia pratensis ‘Sweet Petite’ Fashionista series

Salvia elegans 'Golden Delicious' Really pretty!

Salvia greggii 'Wendy's Wish' - Hard to find!

Sages are in the plant family Lamiaceae, the mint family or dead nettle family

Perennial salvias generally have one big burst of bloom in mid-late spring. Get them to bloom again but cutting them back hard after their first bloom.

Annual salvias should be dead-headed regularly to keep them blooming. Dee cuts ‘Victoria’ salvia way back once it starts to look ratty.

Veggie: Corn, including Sweet, Popcorn (Glass Gem), Strawberry Popcorn, Field Corn, and Decorative Corn

The story of Glass Gem Corn and its Oklahoma roots!

So many varieties of Sweet Corn to choose from:  All-American Selections would be a good place to start. The varieties listed there have been tested so it is a good source of info and you can avoid the hype of marketing. Carol grew 'Sweet American Dream' sweet corn last year and will be growing it again.

Burpee also has corn for container gardeners called ‘On Deck’. Don’t expect to grow enough corn to freeze it for the winter but it is fun to grow in a container.

Corn is basically a large grass so some gardeners like to grow it for the height and fall decorations. It’s good in the back of a border, for example. There are even varieties with variegated foliage like ‘Field of Dreams’ from Select Seeds

21 May 2019Clematis, Aggressive vs. Invasive Plants, and It's Not Too Late to Plant Veggies00:40:33

Send us a text

"Is there a better month in the garden than May when the skies are blue, the garden is lush, and there are flowers blooming in every color imaginable.  The promises of the season have yet to be broken and optimism reigns!" ~~ Carol Michel

Flower: Clematis, a member of the Ranunculaceae family. A good place to buy clematis online if your local garden center doesn't have a good selection is Brushwood Nursery. Just browse their catalog online and you’ll find lots of clematis you never knew existed.

Vegetables: Don't panic! Memorial Day but it is still not too late to plant a vegetable garden.  In Oklahoma, you don’t have much time though. Dee tries to have everything planted in her vegetable and ornamental gardens by June 6. However, with squash, and some other vegetables like green beans, you can do multiple plantings so those are ok. Also, pumpkins, you need to wait anyway. And Carol likes to wait until Memorial Day weekend to plant her summer vegetables including tomatoes and peppers.

Dirt: Garden Thugs, or all the plants we’ve planted so you don’t have to!

Definition of aggressive vs. invasive. Keep in mind though that a plant can be invasive in one region of the country and not in another. Some plants are considered invasive meaning they can readily spread into natural areas and pose a threat to disrupting ecosystems there. ~ Illinois Extension Service. Aggressive plants are those that tend to self-sow all over or have roots, like mint, that run throughout the garden.

Check your states invasive plant list and do not plant those plants listed in your garden

29 May 2019Peonies, Tomatoes, and the Chelsea Chop00:46:33

Send us a text

How is it that Dee and Carol can go from peonies to Wallis Simpson to tomatoes and then the Chelsea chop in one episode? Well, just listen and you'll find out!

Flower: Peony, a wonderful long-lived perennial flower that both Dee and Carol and millions of other gardeners grow. Peony’s Envy is one site that will give you a good overview of peonies. Another source is Song Sparrow Nursery.  And peonies are edible! At least the flower petals are. The petals taste lovely fresh in salads, or lightly cooked and sweetened. Carol learned this when she read Flower Chronicles by Buckner Hollingsworth, published in 1958.  Shout out to our friend, Ellen Zachos, the Backyard Forager.

Vegetable: Tomato  - The Queens of the Garden.  There are whole books written on tomatoes, like Epic Tomatoes by Craig Lehoullier, that will blow your mind with all the varieties. A Proven Winners variety Dee and Carol are both trialing this year is Tempting TomatoesGoodhearted™. Dee wrote in her book,  The 20-30 Something Garden Guide, about how to cage tomatoes and how to grow them. Carol wrote a chapter in her book, Homegrown and Handpicked, about tomato lessons from her dad. For more information on the tomatoes Dee is growing this year, check out her latest blog post, "Tomatoes I'm growing this summer"

Dirt:  The Chelsea Chop. This is the time of year to cut back late blooming perennials like asters, mums, and goldenrod to encourage more blooms and keep the plants somewhat in check. “Chelsea” refers to the big Chelsea Flower Show in London which takes place in late May. Carol calls this cutting back the Indy 500 Chop because it takes place in late May too. This year at the Chelsea Flower Show, they named  Sedum takesimense ‘Atlantis’, the 2019 plant of the year.

All about growing roses, including different types and some of the problems with roses, including the virus, rose rosette.  Also, Carol and Dee talk briefly about growing cabbage and how they met. They also discuss where to listen to learn more about organic and non-organic gardening.

Some books to read more about roses:  Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside by Andrea Di Robilant,  Antique Roses of the South  by William C. Welch, and The Sustainable Rose Garden: A Reader in Rose Culture

The American Rose Society is a great organization to get involved in if you want to learn more about growing roses and connect with others who grow lots of roses.

To listen to find out about organic vs. non-organic gardening, we recommend an episode of Plantrama  with C.L. Fornari and Ellen Zachos.

11 Jun 2019Geraniums, Figs, and Our Plant Failures00:35:54

Send us a text

Carol and Dee discuss geraniums, both the perennial Geraniums and the annual Pelargoniums, figs, and a few plants they've failed to grow successfully in their gardens.

Some books mentioned include:
Merry Hall, by Beverley Nichols
Gods, Wasps, and Stranglers by Mike Shanahan
Back to the Garden by Ursula Buchan
Grow Figs Where You Think You Can’t by Steven Biggs
An Omelette and a Glass of Wine, by Elizabeth David.

And a favorite quote: “Long experience has taught me that people who do not like geraniums have something morally unsound about them. Sooner or later you will find them out; you will discover that they drink, or steal books, or speak sharply to cats. Never trust a man or a woman who is not passionately devoted to geraniums.” Beverley Nichols, Merry Hall
