05 Nov 2019Peshi Haas on The Franciska Show00:33:59

Peshi Haas is an established artist residing in Lawrence, New York. Since graduating from SVA in 2005, Peshi went on to have two solo shows in New York City. Her first show was an evening of success at Synagogue for the Arts, titled "Urban Synagogues." The second show was held at the Edmund J. Safra Synagogue and was titled "Architecture: Past and Present." Peshi has also been included in group shows and private galleries worldwide, in cities such as Brooklyn, New York, New Jersey, Miami, and Jerusalem.

Peshi's subject matter consists of architecture from her travels around the globe. The composition that Peshi uses in her art is simple yet profound. Her color use is oft garish and her stroke is whimsical. She has been extremely influenced by Fauvism, German Expressionism, and Chagall’s city-scapes over her painting career. While drawing and painting are vital to Peshi's growth as an artist, traveling to countries strong in architecture or walking the historical streets of New York are very crucial to the work she produces. The artist will, more often than not, travel with her camera and photograph on-site. Many times while traveling, she will create charcoal drawings on-site as well. Whether in California, Vienna, Prague, Monte Carlo, Rome, Tel Aviv or Miami, Peshi is always searching for perspective on a new winding road or a unique yet classic edifice that would appear most alluring to any art viewer. The artist constantly searches for new architecture in hopes of exploring it and expressing it via the medium of charcoal, eventually painting on canvas. She has become well known for her archway paintings of various ancient cities as the motif is a most calming subject matter for her to draw and paint.

Peshi is an active member in various art groups and enjoys learning from other artists and historians. She remains in constant contact with her esteemed mentors who are well known artists of NYC and Europe.

As Peshi paints in her Long Island studio, she combines her passion for architecture and, very often, her interest in Jewish history to create works of art that call out to a diverse art forum.

04 Jul 2018Perl Wolfe on The Franciska Show00:45:19
Perl Wolfe is a musician, songwriter, producer, makeup artist, and fashion designer. She is best known as the lead singer and co-founder of Bulletproof Stockings, an all-girl Hasidic rock band from Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Born and raised in a Hasidic family in Chicago, IL, Perl showed an interest and aptitude for music early on. She began training in classical piano at the age of 5 and soon began performing in recitals and competitions. She sang in choirs throughout her childhood, but it wasn’t until a move to NYC, that she began writing and performing original music.

After writing a number of songs in the spring of 2011, Wolfe set out to create an all-female band, hoping to build an empowering environment for women of all walks of life to come together through music. A few months into her search for musicians, Wolfe was introduced to drummer Dalia Shusterman, and Bulletproof Stockings was formed.

Wolfe’s thoughtful, evocative lyrics, transportive melodies, and powerhouse vocal performances, quickly helped gain the first all-woman Hasidic rock band a following as well as media attention and acclaim. The first of its kind, Bulletproof Stockings was revolutionary, offering women a safe space that was entirely their own, in a rock music scene dominated by men.

Bulletproof Stockings grew a loyal fan base, produced an EP, “Down To The Top,” a full-length album, “Homeland Call Stomp,” and toured the country, performing in many legendary rock venues. In April 2016, after a whirlwind national tour, the group disbanded.

Perl is currently living in Chicago, where she is working on several music projects, including her first solo album. She recently wrote and performed music for the upcoming film, 93Queen, which premieres at the IFC Center in NYC on July 25th, and will air on PBS in September. While she has since opened up her live audience to include anyone and everyone, she still works to empower women, hiring many talented female musicians to perform on her upcoming album and tour. Look for Perl’s first solo album, due out Spring 2019.

17 Sep 2019Michelle Penn on The Franciska Show00:40:52

Michelle Penn started dancing when I was 3 years old at Dance Dimensions in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  She took ballet, tap and jazz and became more serious as she entered middle school.  At 14, she joined the Fort Lauderdale Children's Ballet Theater, under the direction of Angela Mauti and danced soloist and principal roles, including the Lilac Fairy in Sleeping Beauty and the evil stepsisters in Cinderella.

After graduating from her Catholic high school, she attended Northwestern University in Evanston, IL as a Psychology and Dance Major.  There she began exploring modern and contemporary styles, under the guidance and mentorship of the incredible faculty there.  In her junior year, she took an internship with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, a contemporary dance company based out of the West Loop.  There she gained invaluable knowledge of arts administration and company management that has served her well in the creation of La Zooz.

After graduating Northwestern, she went to Israel to study at Neve Yerushalayim as an Abraham Scholar. Three months after arriving, she created the Neve Dance Company with Devon Stern, another dance major studying at the school.   Over the course of the two years of the company, they performed for over 2,000 women.  She also began lecturing at different schools across Jerusalem.

In June 2012 she got married in Chicago, IL and returned to Jerusalem where I continued to build and grow the Neve Dance Company.  She also co-created a show with Mrs. Lisa Marcus titled "Behind the Masks" in May 2013.

She returned to the States and moved to Silver Spring in the summer of 2013. La Zooz opened its first classes in January 2015.  She has been blessed with the opportunity to share her talents and gifts with her community and continues to work towards building a program that enables each girl to discover her best self.

09 Nov 2020THE ELECTION - covering both sides... with Ray Robinson & Estee Goldschmidt01:35:08

My podcast is about addressing the "elephant in the room".

I use my podcast platform to give a voice to the Orthodox Jewish Women in the Entertainment industry as well as survivors of abuse.

Over the last week, i felt a creative block. I was not able to focus on producing and creating my regular content, my writing has been silenced.

I decided to address the "elephant in my room".

I stayed very neutral in this conversation but I feel like I gave a space for opinions to be expressed.

Maybe, now my creative juices can come flowing back through me.

Thank you for supporting me through this journey and helping me find volunteers for this episode.

I would love to hear you talk about this, future and past episodes on my new forum on the SHMUZY app. Then click on this link: https://app.shmuzy.com/pe5fqrjB9ab

03 Jun 2019Anita Waxman on The Franciska Show00:38:43
Anita Waxman, co-founder and director of Ceras Health, has been involved with healthcare technology
and the development of new modalities that have changed the course of medicine over the past
thirty-five years.

In 1975, Anita founded and served as CEO and Chairman of Howe-Lewis International, a management
consulting and executive search firm. Howe-Lewis serves the biotechnology, medical electronics, and
healthcare communities. It is dedicated to healthcare and not-for-profit communities and is retained by its clients to recruit the entire range of executive-level talent. From its founding, Howe-Lewis has demonstrated its commitment to partnering with both major, established institutions and with emerging, growing organizations to identify and attract the very best leaders.

In 1977, Anita was the co-founder of Diasonics Inc., the company that introduced both diagnostic ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to market. Diasonics was at the forefront in changing the way that medical imaging could diagnose disease.

In 1984, Anita along with Dr. Nicholas Cummings founded American Biodyne Inc. She served on the board of directors through its growth and sale to Medco Containment Services (later acquired by Merck). Along with KKR, Merck Behavioral went through a leveraged buyout and as a freestanding company (known as Merit Behavioral) its revenues grew to over $800 million. The company was later sold to Magellan Behavioral Care.

Ms. Waxman served on the Board of Directors of SOS International, a worldwide medical service company that, working in some of the most inhospitable places on earth, offered international standards of medical care where it was otherwise not available, or where cultural or language barriers prevented its proper implementation. Through her involvement with SOS International, Ms. Waxman became a Director and Co-Founder of International Medical Care, Ltd., which is a rapidly growing Geneva based company that staffs and operates family practice outpatient clinics and provides emergency room
health services throughout the world.

Currently, Anita is a cofounder, director, and consultant to Ceras Health, which is dedicated to reducing the cost of healthcare. Ceras Health, Inc.TM (Ceras Health) has developed a patent pending SaaS platform, I’M HOME!®, that supports patients’ adherence to pre-and post-discharge care plans, provides patients and care team members with the ability to measure and track patient health data, and enables individuals to get better and stay better by providing access to condition specific health
information.

In addition to her work in the healthcare industry, Anita has spent many years following her passion in the world of live theater. Anita Waxman is a multiple Tony Award-winning producer. As CEO of Alexis Productions, she has garnered seventy-one Tony nominations and sixteen Tony awards. Anita is currently working with Jimmy Buffett, Frank Marshall, and Grove Entertainment to bring Escape To Margaritaville, a musical based on the music of Jimmy Buffett, to the world’s stage. Anita is also producing Little Dancer, a musical based on the story of Edward Degas. Through Alexis Productions, Anita produced and won multiple Tonys for The Real Thing written by Sir Tom Stoppard, and the successful revival of Cabaret starring Natasha Richardson and Alan Cumming. Other productions include Jesus Christ Superstar, Becoming Chaplin, Rocky, the Tony Award winning Best Revival of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Music Man, A Moon for the Misbegotten starring Gabriel Byrne, The Wild Party, The Waverly Gallery, Electra, A Night in November, A Little Night Music, Enron, American Idiot, Love Never Dies, Present Laughter starring Frank Langella, Mrs. Klein starring Uta Hagen, Wild Honey starring Sir Ian McKellen, The Vertical Hour, Bombay Dreams, Gypsy, the West End productions of Ragtime, the Broadway revival of Rodger and Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song, the hit revival of Noises Off, The Elephant Man starring Billy Crudup, and many more. Two of her shows have won Pulitzer prizes: The Young Man from Atlanta and Top Dog/Underdog. She is a member
of the Broadway League.

Ms. Waxman founded two theatrical investment funds, Alexis Fund I and Alexis Fund II. Some investments include Kinky Boots (NYC, London & Tour), Escape to Margaritaville, Hello Dolly, The Front Page, Glass Menagerie, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Jersey Boys (AUS), Book of Mormon (AUS), Verso Truth in Deception, and Joan of Arc. She is currently producing Little Dancer, a new musical by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens staring Tiler Peck and Terrence Mann, and Directed by Susan Stroman. Other upcoming projects include a new musical based on the music of Diane Warren, The
Library, Terra Firma and more. She has served on the boards of the Donmar Warehouse in London, 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, The Magic Theatre in San Francisco, The Roundabout Theatre Company
New York City, the Human Rights watch, SOS International, and American Biodyne.

Anita Waxman has also worked with orphanages around the world. Through her foundation NOAH’S ARK, she established a home for orphaned children in Russia: the Passin-Waxman Center for Children, which is known today as Anita’s Kids, which has helped to educate and care for several hundred children in the past eighteen years.

18 Feb 2019Batya Zachter on The Franciska Show00:34:01

Batya Zachter (Age 22) grew up in Los Angeles, California and is the second to oldest of six children in her family. She went to Bais Yaakov Los Angeles and attended two years of seminary in Israel. Batya has been a Madricha for various dorms and camps during the past few years. She loves to enhance other’s experiences, and always strives to create a fun and comfortable atmosphere wherever she goes. It is in Batya’s nature to bring her ideas and imagination, and to make it a reality. She refers to it as “Making dreams come true.”

Batya has been involved in many plays, Jewish movies, comedy skits, drama camps, and directed a performance one summer in a Kiruv camp as well.  She loves to express herself through being part of a performance, but as a director and event planner, she is now able to use her many talents to help others express themselves in a Frum way.  Batya also loves to lead events for teens. Whenever there is an opportunity to create a fun and meaningful program, she grabs it. She has organized and lead night camps, Tisha B’av programs, dance classes, and loves to create music videos for friends, families, schools, and bat mitzvas to help people bond in a creative way. As she is a Social Worker(LMSW) by profession, Batya has the ability to direct and plan her shows and events in a sensitive, calm, and organized manner, making sure everyone feels good during the process.

Batya had the idea to create Girls’ Talent Tour in November 2018. From the moment she had this idea, there was nothing that could stop her from accomplishing this dream. Batya partnered up with Hatzolah of Staten Island for her debut in December 2018. Rivka and Moishe Weber, the heads of Hatzolah of Staten Island stated: “She was so passionate about her plan that her enthusiasm was truly contagious.”   Being that this was Batya’s first major event, she quickly realized the enormous details entailed in creating this “Dream Show.” A few of the many aspects included: selecting the talent and judges, booking the venue, staging, lighting, sound systems, ticket sales, advertisement, talent coaching and much more.  Continuing her full-time job as a Social Worker, Batya worked to create the show she imagined. The first Girls’ Talent Competition was such a success. The talent was truly incredible, and the show was amazing and entertaining. First, second, and third place winners were selected by three remarkable judges: Shaindel Antelis, Maayan Davis, and Devorah Schwartz. The feedback from the show was amazing! This lead various communities to reach out to Batya and ask her to go on tour and select new talent.

Batya’s next show will IY’H be on February 24th in the Lafayette Theater near Monsey, Passaic, Teaneck, and Monroe. The proceeds from this show are to raise money for Toras Dovid Community Kollel, a Kollel for Baalei Teshuva. Batya is very excited about this show. The very talented composer and singer, Nechama Cohen, was added as a fourth guest judge for this upcoming show. The size of this theater is more than double the size of last show’s venue. The talent chosen for this show is something to really look forward to. You can purchase tickets by visiting the website dreamontalenttickets.com or by calling Tzippy Simon at 201-983-3748. Batya is looking forward to continuing to create more events in the future.  Follow Batya on Instagram @dream_on_events and on Facebook.

12 Nov 2024Announcements - (8 YEARS!)00:03:40
18 Jan 2018Sarah Dukes on The Franciska Show00:33:12
Sarah Dukes started playing piano when she was six years old and composed her first song at the mere age of eight. Classically trained until she was 18, the North Carolina raised pianist increasingly turned to her music and songwriting as a way of expressing herself, and by the time Sarah finished high school, she had a stirring collection of original pieces that made up her debut album, "Finding Forever", performed by world-renowned pianist, Yaron Gershovsky.

Dukes was handpicked by Whisperings-Solo Piano Radio as one of their exclusively featured solo piano artists, and her richly nuanced songs have been featured in several popular documentaries produced by Jewish Educational Media, as well as streamed on various international channels including Enlightened Piano Radio, One World Music Radio, and Pandora. Sarah's pieces have also been featured in the in-flight entertainment package for a few airlines.

Sarah recently released a new album of original piano solos, “Life Sometimes”, which has been selected a winner in the Global Music Awards and was honored with a Silver Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Music in the New Age Solo Piano and Album categories. This album was ranked #17 on Zone Music Reporter’s “Top 100 Radio Airplay” chart, and was on the first round ballot for the 59th GRAMMY® Awards. Additionally, Dukes' emotional composition, "Dancing in the Dark" has been selected as a finalist in The John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the World category of 2016. The most recent releases of her singles One: Orchestrated Version, and Raining Rockets introduced a new level of musical beauty to her already powerful collection of original compositions.

Sarah's compositions offer listeners soothing, melodic arrangements bursting with an emotional energy that is unmistakably straight from the heart.

The episode concludes with reflections on maintaining personal authenticity while embracing different roles and dynamics in parenting.

Implementing these methods in her own family, Blimie experienced significant positive changes, fueling her passion for sharing these techniques with other parents.

As a certified parenting coach, she now dedicates her career to helping families build stronger, more positive relationships through workshops, one-on-one coaching sessions, and online resources. Blimie's mission is to transform parenting experiences from stressful to joyful, emphasizing self-reflection, emotional intelligence, and adaptive strategies that evolve as children grow.

24 Dec 2019Sheila Meyer (Founder of ATime4Dance)00:49:17

Sheila Meyer is the executive director and founder of A Time for Dance. A performing arts studio for the Orthodox Jewish Community of Los Angeles is in its 16th year.  The foundation for her lifelong love for dance began at age 6. She studied under many of Atlanta’s finest dance professionals. She has studied tap, ballet, jazz, hip hop, gymnastics and Israeli dance. After receiving a bachelors in psychology, Sheila took her childhood dream and made it a reality by starting her own dance studio in 2000 in Georgia. Moving to LA in2004 she made it her mission to start spreading her love of dance with the community in2004. In 2010 she founded a non for profit Yachad Ballet Ensemble, an opportunity to give back to the community while doing Jewish outreach through dance. Sheila performed in Yachad dances ballets “the spirit of shabbos” and “ the crown of creation”. Sheila takes pride in providing a professional setting for Orthodox Jewish girls to develop skills and perform without having to compromise their values. She enjoys working with her amazing staff and cherishes the relationships with her students and their families.

ABOUT THE COMPANY:
A Time for Dance opened its doors in 2004 with two locations. Setting out to provide professional quality instruction and strong technique classes in a warm and heimish environment. Countless girls and young women have had opportunity to train and perform in an environment that is sensitive to the needs of our community.
This year we added a new location in Long Beach. Currently, our studio has five studio locations in addition to onsite school locations around the city. We also offer private in home lessons to many families in LA. Our custom in studio or at home dance/gymnastics birthday parties are a big hit.  We also offer custom choreography for special events. Each summer, our classes have been an important part of many local camps. Our own Summer Arts Experience has provided space for students to advance their skills, giving them a creative outlet for expression. With a well planned enriching curriculum which includes fine arts, culinary arts and performing arts campers spend the summer developing strong skills while having a great time.We also have a  Summer Arts Intensive for teens.
In 2009, we established a non profit dance company “Yachad Dance Ensemble West as a vehicle for Jewish outreach through the arts. Our debut women’s performances have touched many and 100% of the proceeds were donated to local organizations.  A Time for Dance has generously given scholarships to families through Coach Art and Chai Lifeline.
A Time for Dance is an integral part of the community and an important part of many young girls lives. Going into our 16th year we wanted to bring more ruach and unity within our dance community. Special holiday dance parties and events helped to bring spirituality into our program and unite or dancers from all parts of the community.
Dance is a universal language and the togetherness that has been created within our community will last forever. It is our mission to bring people together through dance. We are looking forward to the next 16 years of serving our community!

16 Jul 2019Avigail Gruzman on The Franciska Show00:33:01
Avigail Gruzman is a London born artist as well as a mother and wife. She grew up in a large family, full of artistic and creative siblings and parents. Much of her childhood revolved around the arts.

As well as doing GCSE and Alevels in art, Avigail studied graphic design in the LCC (London college of communications). In Israel she studied in Michlelet Emuna, a top rated art school for frum women.
Once Avigail moved to Antwerp and settled down, she noticed a need in the community to teach and spread the love of art. And so Avigail’s Art Loft was born. Every week she teaches lots of art classes in the loft, as well as hosting paint parties.

Avigail also loves to paint her own oil paintings, which are all for sale. And she also does custom commissions.
Go see Avigail's works on Instagram and get in touch to find out more; https://www.instagram.com/avigails_art_loft/

About Our Guest:

Rivky Itzkowitz is a fashion designer living in NYC. As a practicing Orthodox Jew, she was frustrated at not being able to find modest clothes that actually fit, so she set out to create her own. Her company, Impact Fashion, is among the only size inclusive modest fashion lines on the market. Every style is fitted to perfection and is available in sizes 2-24 because there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be. She is also the host of the Be Impactful Podcast where she sits down with the women making a difference in their own corners of the world. You can find her on instagram and Facebook @impact.fashion.nyc and see all of her designs on impactfashionnyc.com. Listen to the Be Impactful Podcast wherever you get your podcasts.
