20 Nov 2022197 - A Review of Children’s Literature00:29:40

In this episode Nick goes solo and reviews a handful of children's books about fish and fishing. He comes to the conclusion that, at least of the titles his family owns, kid's books about fish and fishing don't portray many successful outings, don't resemble actual fish species, and/or many don't have any underlying science-y teach-ables. Nick's collection is far from complete and he does give a overview of two books that he is hoping to get soon. Enjoy!

Main point: Read to your children!

31 Jul 2022185 - Thank You!00:23:15

In this episode Nick does a solo monologue covering a few topics about the podcast. The first being that he was caught off-guard by a fifth Sunday of the month and was left scrambling trying to fill an episode last minute, hence the solo episode. To combat this, we are seeking your help by asking you to contribute advice, stories, short blurbs, jokes to air on later episodes of the podcast. You can submit that material by recording on your phone or laptop then uploading your stories here: https://forms.gle/b8raHH7H7rktMpyX6 and your advice here: https://forms.gle/BWA26mzk2tbYxQWo6 or you can simply call in to 785-380-9815 and leave a voice mail.

Nick also spills the beans that The Fisheries Podcast will be receiving AFS' Excellence in Public Outreach Award at the upcoming meeting in Spokane. He expresses a multitude of thanks to the other co-hosts, past guests, the listeners, supporters, and the nominating team. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Another meeting related topic: BINGO! We will be creating a bingo game to be played during the upcoming AFS' meeting. The squares will be based on occurances/activites at the meeting or sights around Spokane. The first person to get all their squares filled in will have their 2023 AFS membership dues paid for by the podcast. Other prizes are still being worked out but may be related to four-corners, outline, or regular old bingo. Feel free to send us suggestions for space ideas.

24 Jul 2022184 - Does Industrial Fishing Influence Global Climate Change? Ask Daniele Bianchi00:45:54

In this episode, Anders Halverson talks to Daniele Bianchi about the impacts that marine fish have on the global carbon cycle. In short, the ocean is a very important sink for carbon dioxide. Marine fish are important drivers of a biological pump that can sequester that carbon for long periods of time and at great depth. And that means removing large quantities of fish through industrial fishing could have important consequences for climate change. It isn't easy measuring it or modelling it, though.

The paper we discuss in this show can be found here:

10 Sep 2023230 - Finding Pacific spiny lumpsucker moments amid chronic illness with Katie Furey01:05:21

This week Kadie laughs and cries through this interview with Katie Furey, a good friend and fellow graduate student in the Ecology Department at Montana State University. In this episode, we chat about Katie's career path, her current research investigating the feeding ecology and trophic relationships of salmonids in Georgetown Lake, MT, as well as her experience with rheumatoid arthritis, anxiety, and ADHD. While this episode is on the longer side and contains more giggles (and tears) than average, we cover some really crucial topics about the representation of chronic illness and disabilities in fisheries and the importance of health insurance for graduate students.

Main point: Prioritize finding joy, silliness, and Pacific spiny lumpsucker moments in your life! (And go to therapy if you can afford it!)

09 Jun 2024262 - Collaborative efforts lead to MN's Native Fish Bill with Dr. Shannon Fisher and Tyler Winter00:47:13

This week Kadie chats with returning guest, Tyler Winter and new guest, Dr. Shannon Fisher about how Minnesota's recent Native Fish Bill came about via collaborative efforts between the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and various conservation groups.

Tyler is a lifelong angler, conservationist, and environmental scientist. Tyler and his friends founded Native Fish for Tomorrow as a consumptive conservation group to challenge the "rough fish paradigm". As anglers they prove that native fish are a resource that should be managed for sustainability and their ecosystem services. And they hope to inspire others to angle for native fish so they can enjoy the resource too! Tyler was previously interviewed in episode 221 about the No Junk Fish Bill.

Dr. Shannon Fisher’s professional career spans 24 years with the state of Minnesota where he currently works as the Fisheries Populations and Regulations Manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In addition to his regular duties, he has coordinated and led research on burbot and bowfin populations and served as the agency’s lead on native rough fish management strategies. Shannon’s passions include fishing, deer hunting, gardening, bowling, cribbage, and spending time with his partner Lance, children Jaden and Allie, and the family pets.

Main points: native rough fish have their place and internalize/understand catch hyperstability

If you'd like to get in touch with Shannon, you can reach him at shannon.fisher@state.mn.us. You can reach Tyler via nativefishfortomorrow.org or email him at tyler@nf4t.org.

26 Jun 2022180 - Fisheries Science, Pacific Herring, and Colonialist History with Jennifer Silver00:43:47

In this episode, Dr. Jennifer Silver discusses the history of fisheries science as it was developed in the context of colonialism and industrialized fishing. The discussion centers on a paper she and her colleagues recently published in The American Naturalist titled "Fish, People, and Systems of Power: Understanding and Disrupting Feedback between Colonialism and Fisheries Science" (Silver et al. 2022). In particular she discusses the ways in which colonialism impacted indigenous peoples in what is now British Columbia through the Pacific herring fishery.
