09 May 2022Birdman (2014) (Reflections #2)01:00:04

Welcome back for round two of REFLECTIONS! We watched Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Birdman.” Michael Keaton stars in this deep introspective journey about a man that used to be famous and is now coming to grips with the fact that one day he will leave this earth and what will his life show for it? A blockbuster from 1992?! NO. He wants to be known for something good and for something meaningful. Struggling with mental health breaks and possible suicidal tendencies, Keaton’s character must navigate his play and the circus in his mind. Jared is not with us this week, but sit back and enjoy the show!

SPOOOOOOOOOOOKTOBER is still here! Today is Eric’s pick and he chose to pick a film that is a callback from Episode 1 of The Film Snobs, and we only talked about it for 15 minutes. A film that deserves hours of conversation, directed by Na Hong-jin, “The Wailing.” This film is NOT for the faint of heart. A film that delves into the supernatural and the demonic. WE really crack this film open. Guest STEVEN joins us on the pod and we manage to have more than a few spooooooky technical problems…but we prevailed. We hope you enjoy this film if you watched it…but we’d understand if you decided not to. Enjoy

08 Aug 2022In Bruges (2008) (RICKY & ETHAN PALOOZA #3)01:03:24

Well, the time has come. We are saying good-bye soon to our fellow snobs and it’s getting sad around here. But tonight, we have started ETHAN WEEK and he has chosen a very funny and yet serious film that we all love…a film by Martin McDonagh called, “In Bruges.” This film is filled with hilarious one liners, action, shoot-outs, brilliant performances, and deals with suicide. This film also handles some fairly problematic material but manages to weave a story that is both entertaining and hard to look away from. Set in the dream-like land of Belgium, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson steal the show as they stumble through a weekend away. The snobs loved talking through one of Ethan’s top 4 on Letterboxd and we hope you enjoy it as well.

Good morning SNOBBIES! And welcome back to our episode on Terence Davies month. This week we have Jared’s pick and he decided to go with “The Long Day Closes.” This film has a similar feel and vibe to Distant Voices, Still Lives. In this film we follow the perspective of Bud, a boy in Liverpool in the 1950’s, coming of age around the other family members and the austere Catholic Church as he enters the rigors of school, nurtures a bedazzled love of the movies and longs for companionship. Jared says this is a near perfect film and Terence Davies best film he’s ever made. We dive into childhoods, favorite shots, the Davies Dissolve, and much much more. Enjoy!

17 Oct 2023Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2001) (SPOOKTOBER FOUR #3)01:11:02

Here. We. GOOOOO!! Welcome back to SPOOKTOBER 4, pick #3 by Cody Martin himself. We are excited to talk about this film. This animated EPIC is packed with delicious animation, beautiful shots, and a tragic story. This film is directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and is called, “Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.” This film, in the words of Cody is the perfect middle ground as it doesn’t feel like a halloween movie made by Disney or an over the top horror flick. WE really had a good time with this film and found it to be the perfect Sppoktober addition to the collection. Enjoy!

30 Aug 2021The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 2 (2012) (Rad Dads #1)00:51:37
SNOBBIES. RAD DADS ARE IN!!! This month we try to find the most Rad of Dads. It's a competition. We've seen too many Bad Dads and we need to break this curse. What we have here is a first. Lets just say it. We watched a Twilight movie. Most of us have not watched ANY Twilight movies and Ricky's pick for today was the very last one, haha. Director Bill Condon, known for films like The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1, The Jonas Brothers: Fly with Me, and Beauty and the Beast remake...Condon brings the most batSH** movie we've ever watched. Easily the most decapitations in a movie we've ever seen, the Snobbies really get down to the important issues in this one. Eric talks about his real life interaction with Kristen Stewart, we talk about favorite kills, and why this is hands down the freakiest CG baby we’ve ever seen. Honestly, if you can believe it, this episode is more insane than the Chef episode. Some of the snobs...just Eric...legitimately lose their minds. Murnau brings a story that is timeless and stunning, even though it is a silent film! We were blown away at how heartfelt, emotional, and affecting this film was. We talked about drowning wives, feeling bad about it, city life, having a great day, immediately having a bad day, and so much more. Guest star Micah joins us and it is a really great time. SUUUUUUPPPP Snobbies. We are in Film #3 for BOMB MOMS. This week is Eric’s pick for Bomb Moms and he picked Lenny Abrahamson’s, “Room.” Brie Larson stars in her Oscar Winning performance and Jacob Tremblay stars as the young Jack. This film features the enduring, tested, perseverant, graceful, difficult, loving love that a mother gives her child. This film is complicated in the emotions that it evokes, powerful in the message it gives, lasting in the impact it had on us. Caleb, Ethan, and Eric discuss the many facets of this film, how they would have escaped, what it must have been like to handle this Trauma, Caleb says the word “Druthers,” and everyone is like, “Whaaaaaaat????” It’s an incredible film guys, definitely check it out. Hey! What can you say?? We're in the mood for love today and RICKY IS BAAACCCKKK!!!!1!! Today is Ricky's pick and he decided to go for the Kar-Wai Wong classic, "In the Mood for Love." Guys...we loved the film. It was so good. Such a lovely tribute to films that can be so sensual and sexy but not have to show any over the top nudity or sex scenes. Sometimes it works, but in this film, they didn't need it. The shots are great, the dialog is great, the framing, the music, the FEEELLLSSS!! It's a good time and coming in the top 10 of the top 100 isn't too shabby. We hope you Enjoy this as much as we did!

We bundled up for this ride through The Seven Levels of the Candy Cane Forrest, past The Sea of Twirly, Swirly Gumdrops, and finally through the Lincoln tunnel. This is officially the end of RICKY & ETHAN MONTH!!! Ethan wraps up his week with a delightful, beautiful, and wholesome film that captured the feeling of purity and charm. We watched director Paul King’s “Paddington 2.” Guys…SNOBBIES! In the words of Ricky, “This film slaps.” It’s just a good time and makes you feel happy throughout the washing experience. Ethan must really have a thing for canals and Brendan Gleeson because both of his films had them in them. This film has animated bears, crossdressing Hugh Grant, a town coming together, and reunited love. We were DELIGHTED to watch this last film from Ethan and to talk through our joy from which this film brings.

DISCLAIMER: This film talks about sensitive topics such as rape, though not explicit or gratuitous, it is still discussed.

WE’RE BACK! That’s right babyyyy, we’re back and we are doing a new topic today. This one we have been waiting to do for a long time now and the time has finally arrived. Caleb brought up the idea that we should let chatGPT pick a film for us to watch. We asked AI “Give us a movie that a film snob would watch.” and we chose from a list of 10. WE originally picked Apocalypse Now….but it did not exist AT ALL on the internet for streaming, renting, or buying! So we chose the classic from legendary director Akira Kurosawa, “Rashomon 羅生門.” A film that inspired a handful of films and most recently “The Last Duel,” which we talk about on pod. A film that is packed with things to talk about, we hope you enjoy!

ChatGPT is back and it is ready to pick another film for us. CODY IS BACK! and we are happy about it. This week Cody chooses the film that chatGPT gaffes us from another legendary Italian director Federico Fellini, “8 1/2” This film is a film about film and a story about the director himself. A master of the surreal style and arguably the father or surrealism, this film really took us on a journey. The film deals with women, film, life, choices, regret, and love. This film should be watched side-by-side with “Bardo” (2022) a modern masterclass on surrealism. The team is split on this film but we have plenty to talk about. We hope you enjoy!

Snobbies. Welcome to a new segment. Today we are featuring an old ep from the archives. This episode is one that we have talked about more than once on the podcast. The topic when this originally aired was "Going on a Journey." This was Ricky's week to pick a film and he decided to go with MXP Most Xtreme Primate as the film that best represented "Going on a Journey." You can tell on the pod, but I was a little less than enthusiastic about this pick. Probably one of the only times I've actively tried to derail a podcast due to how horrible the film was. 29 Oct 2021What We Do in the Shadows (2014) (SPOOKTOBER 2.0 #2)00:55:32

SPOOOOOOOOOKTOBER is here to stay! This week we have Ethan’s pick and it is a bit of a funny horror flick. Fresh of the Boat of Wellington, New Zealand we have Taika Waititi’s “What We Do In The Shadows.” This is a bit of a hilarious, spooky movie and we love it. Filled with a Mocumentary style of filmmaking, this film is near and dear to Ricky and Eric as they spent some time in NZ. Breaking the U.S. market for an indie film that isn’t The Lord of the Rings, What we do in the shadows was a bit groundbreaking and we are excited to talk about it…right after Caleb cleans up this wine spill. Classic Caleb…ENJOY!

Welcome Snobbies! to the last episode in the ChatGPT series where Artificial Intelligence picks our movies for us. The topic has been a lot of fun and we have seen some really cool films. Tonight we have Jared picking the film from the list ChatGPT gave him. The film that was chosen was from legendary director Éric Rohmer, “A Summer’s Tale.” This film deal with ultra-realism, where the other film we did for this topic, 8 1/2, did surrealism. The film follows a man on his way through the French coast side and his many interactions with women where choices are made for him. We had different opinions about this film, but we all agreed that it was the best of the bunch.

Directed and starred by Jon Favreau, we take a journey following a man who has blown up his food career and is looking for rebirth in a busted up food truck. Chef is a delightful movie that deals with heartbreak, re-finding yourself, redemption, and renewal. This was Eric's pick and is a movie that just doesn't disappoint. Join the Snobs as they discuss the art of an impression, the best food we've had on a movie yet, flipping trucks and eating burritos, and Caleb & Ethan bicker the entire time. It's a heck of a pod! Snobbies, welcome to CHEER-UP FILMS month! Today we are introducing a new topic for the snobs and we begin with Caleb’s pick. He is a deeply Midwestern boy, as is Eric, and Jared a little too, so Caleb decided to Cheer us up after a long Halloween month with a film that dribbles down into the soul of every Indiana proud resident…director David Anspaugh brings a true classic of Sports film perfection, a true pioneer in the art form that is a sports movie, “Hoosiers.” We really enjoyed watching this film again, some of us for the first time since we were kids. We talked through our favorite moments, why this film works so well, and when we actually got into the Vietnam War…it makes sense if you listen. 17 Jun 2024Punch Drunk Love (2002) (ROM COMS #2)01:27:45

Hey there Snobbies. Today we have Caleb’s pick for ROMCOM. Jared came in HARD that this is NOT a RomCom. This was heavily debated on this episode as we discussed why the Paul Thomas Anderson Directed film “Punch Drunk Love,” belongs in this category. If a film’s heart is romance and comedy, isn’t it a RomCom? Is it a NeuroDivergentRomCom? Is it just pure chaos energy? What we DO know, is that this is a heck of a film and we were here for it! Eric especially loved any time Philip Seymour Hoffman graces the screen. This episode was a lot of fun, we hope you enjoyed it too.

We talk through these issues and how a mother’s impact on our lives has shaped us. We talk a bit about our favorite memories with our mothers, high school dynamics, funniest moments, and sad moments. Tonight’s pick comes from Jared and is by director Nadav Lapid, “Ahed’s Knee.” This film, coming out of Israel, tackles a possibly autobiographical story about something the director went through while featuring a film. 21 Mar 2022Dancer in the Dark (2000) (BOMB MOMS #1)00:55:22

Ricky kicks off our new topic, BOMB MOMS, with the Palme d’Or winning musical, “Dancer in the Dark”, by Lars Von Trier. Björk, Iceland’s national treasure, stars as the lead and gives one of the greatest performances in cinema history. The film is a beautiful and heartbreaking experience of a mother doing everything she can to provide for her child. After a good cry, we struggled to keep it together as we discussed the intricacies of the film’s acting, musical numbers, story, and other interesting creative choices. It truly is a one of a kind masterpiece. Enjoy!

Hey Snobbies! Welcome to the Second ever Snobbie’s Choice week. Last time, Tom picked The Truman Show. This week we have Nick Maddie who is here to give us the ethical discussion film of a lifetime, from director Ben Affleck’s debut…”Gone Baby Gone.” This film GETS. US. HEATED! WE really enjoyed talking about Right and Wrong, bad girlfriends, Bad mom’s, love for a child, and we talk about what each of us would do in their place. This film has some sensitive material as the film is about a child being taken from her home and can trigger some people. This was a great episode and we enjoyed talking through it. Enjoy!
