29 Aug 2019How to achieve a work/life balance - 00200:43:25

The first question is, what is work life balance?

There’s a false perception that a work life balance is where you balance work equally to life. I think that's completely unrealistic. Life is so big, you can't just say work, and then life.

Work life balance is one, unique to the individual, and two, depends on a range of different factors. For example, your career, what your values are, your personality type, if you have kids.

Also, it’s important to acknowledge there are different aspects to life. We follow a program developed by Dr John Demartini, acknowledging 7 areas of life. Listen to the show to find out more.

Here’s an overview of what we cover:

  • Tamara’s definition of work life balance, and how it’s different to Joel: (3:07)
  • The 7 areas of life: (5:47)
  • Some of the signs you’re not living to your purpose: (18:04)
  • 5 steps to achieve a work life balance: (20:58)
  • How couples can achieve a work life balance together: (27:13)
  • Defining what quality time is, and how it’s different for each person: (28:49)
  • The perception it’s not acceptable for men to leave work early to pick up their kids, and how to change it: (31:14)
  • How organisations can help their employees achieve a better work life balance: (36:05)
  • And so much more!

29 Aug 2019The Power of Gratitude & How to Get Started - 00400:45:30

It's interesting what happens to the brain when you practice gratitude. Dopamine is released into two areas of the brain, which controls our movement and speech, and our sense of reward. So when a person expresses gratitude, the dopamine creates a connection between the behaviour, and feeling good. Therefore the more a person practices the gratitude, the more often that dopamine releases.

The power of gratitude is not some passing fad, or latest trend. There are genuine benefits to practicing gratitude every day. Particularly when you’re able to be grateful for a challenging situation.

Many successful people have a daily gratitude practice.

For example, Arianna Huffington bases a lot of her success to practicing gratitude. Tony Robbins believes that being grateful first thing in the morning helps him have a more successful day, as well as staves off anger, or fear that leads to poor investing or life choices.

Oprah Winfrey says that appreciating whatever shows up in your life changes your personal vibration. That generates more goodness for yourself when you are aware of all that you have, rather than focusing on what you’re missing.

Gratitude doesn't have to be big, extravagant events. In fact, it’s best when you’re grateful for the simple things in life.

Here’s an overview of what we cover in the power of gratitude:

  • What a gratitude practice is, and the benefits of practicing gratitude, including the scientific evidence: (5:05)
  • Chemical reaction that occurs in you brain when you practice gratitude: (9:05)
  • 7 areas of life and how you can implement these into your gratitude practice: (14:46)
  • We explore into the different ways you can practice gratitude: (18:42)
  • How to take your gratitude practice to the next level: (28:45)
  • Some examples of really big challenges in our lives and how we used gratitude to get through them - Tamara gets really vulnerable: (29:26)
  • AND so much more!

23 Sep 2019Personal Branding and Why it’s Important - 00500:46:22

Organisations invest significant time, money and resources into building their brand. They do that to grow awareness of the brand, establish their competitive positioning and to build trust and credibility. And ultimately that leads to increased sales. Personal branding is no different.

As individuals we all need to establish our point of difference within (and outside) the organisation, and grow awareness of our capabilities. We need to build credibility about our skills and experience in order to be considered for a promotion or salary review.

The better you define and manage your personal brand, the more opportunities you will get.

Here’s an outline of what we cover in this episode on personal branding:

  • What is personal branding, and why it’s important (6:19)
  • Examples of people who have a great personal brand, and why (12:45)
  • Joel and I share examples of how personal branding has both hindered, and helped accelerate our careers (20:43)
  • How you determine your personal brand (28.07)
  • 4 steps on how to start building your personal brand (28.43)
  • Tips on how to start building your brand today (35:43)

21 Oct 2019How to Use Technology in Alignment with Your Goals - 00700:46:20

Many people blame technology for being unproductive, and for making us impatient, however ultimately it’s the way we use (or abuse) technology that creates the negative impact. If you want to use technology in alignment with your goals, you need to make a conscious choice to:

  • Use it intentionally and mindfully to improve your productivity, increase inspiration and accelerate our goals, or
  • Allow the in-built distractions of technology and the lure of instant gratification control how we use it

When we are clear on our goals, and what we value, and we set our intentions we’re able to use technology in a way that will help accelerate our career and personal goals.

In this episode of The Females in Tech Show we cover:

  • Why technology isn’t to blame for decreased productivity (04:04)
  • Statistics on how much time we spend on our phones and social media (05:16)

18 Nov 2019The Benefits of Self Care, and How it Helps your Career - 00900:38:47

For years I thought self care was selfish. I would literally cringe when I heard the mention of self care, and believed it was just an excuse for women to pamper themselves. Today I have experienced the benefits of self care first hand, and have seen how it has helped accelerate my career in tech.

Prior to that I was putting my body (and soul) under immense stress, which resulted in a plethora of physical symptoms such as shingles, glandular fever (twice), autoimmune disease and a face and chest full of sore pimples. I ignored the warning signs, and continued by working hard, and playing hard, preferring instead to “relax” by excessive drinking and partying. It wasn’t until my partner commented on the “sad girl” behind my Instagram photos that I realised I wasn’t being true to myself.

That led me to reading books on the importance of self-care. It didn’t take long for me to realise how wrong I was about it.

Self-care ensures you give the universe the best of you, not what’s left of you. If you keep running at full speed all the time, and don’t take time to refuel and give your body the rest and attention it needs, you end up being the cranky version of you. (Or worse, you make yourself ill, like I did). And no one likes that version.

Wondrous things have happened since introducing self-care into my daily routine. I’m a lot more productive at work, and I am a happier person to me around. I truly love my body (still working on this), and I don’t crave unhealthy food. I don’t conform to what society “expects” me to be. I’ve also found my true love, and feel truly abundant with my life.

If you’d like to hear more about my journey to self-care, and find out how you can introduce self-care into your daily routine, then don’t miss this episode of The Females in Tech Show.

Here’s an outline of what we cover in this episode:

  • Why self-care is not selfish, and is actually critical for a healthy mind, body and soul (4:49)
  • Why having a self-care practice is important for both women, and men (7:24)
  • I share my journey into self-love and how it transformed my life and career (12:04)
  • We discuss the 7 Pillars of Self-Care (18:37)
  • Joel shares his self-care practices (24:59)
  • We discuss being “too busy” for self-care, and how to overcome this limiting belief (29:54)
  • And so much more!

15 Dec 2019Why Exercise is Key to Improving Mental Health with Heather Opdam - 01100:44:35

Sometimes life throws you unexpected curveballs that knock you straight down. Challenges that completely turn your life upside down, and you feel completely out of control. This happened to Heather Opdam early in life, and has given her an interest in improving mental health.

Heather’s father took his life during her early childhood years, leaving a wife and three beautiful girls behind. There was a stigma about suicide in the 70’s, particularly with catholic families where it was considered a sin.

Living in a single parent household with two sisters came with its challenges. Society was based on the “traditional” roles of men and women in the household. For example, a man’s role included things like shovelling snow from the driveway in minus 50 degree temperatures during Winter, and mowing the lawn in Summer.

When Heather lost her father these perceived male roles were now the responsibility of her and her sisters. As significant as these challenges were, what blossomed in Heather was an inner strength and a can-do attitude that has contributed to her success today.

Heather has more than 20 years’ experience in the IT industry, in both Australia and New Zealand. She is a passionate and experienced Sales Manager with a deep understanding of the needs and drivers in the technology market.

Outside of her senior sales role at VMware, Heather invests her time and energy into volunteering and fundraising on key social issues. Particularly mental health awareness and workplace diversity, and recently led VMware’a Diversity and Inclusion team across ANZ.

Heather loves a challenge, whether that’s running a marathon, riding a mountain bike 650KM over 7 days, or exploring the outdoors. However, her greatest success and passion by far, is being a mother to two teenage boys.

There are so many golden nuggets in this episode. Here’s what we cover:

  • Heather’s career journey to Senior Partner Business Manager at VMWare (6:00)
  • Her secret to overcoming discrimination in the workplace (14:21)
  • Heather’s work with The Black Dog Institute, & the correlation between mental health & physical exercise (19:33)
  • She also shares her advice to anyone looking to improve their mental health (35:23)

29 Dec 2019How to have your best year ever with more effective goal setting - 01200:45:30

Effective goal setting, as part of my annual and quarterly planning process has been the biggest contributor to my success over the last two years. It has resulted in me having significant growth and progress in all areas of life - my career, finances, family and social relationships, personal development and my life purpose.

If you want to live the life of your dreams, then you need to be intentional. Anyone who has achieved anything worthwhile in life has been focused on what they want, and actively worked to achieve it.

That starts with being clear on what success looks like. And that’s not just your career, or money. It should include personal, family and social relationships, how we grow mentally and spiritually, and our physical and mental wellbeing.

For the last two years I have spent New Years Day, and a few days following, doing annual planning and goal setting with my partner. The result is 8-10 goals for the next 12-36 months. We then choose 2-3 goals to focus on for the next 3 months, and this forms the basis of our weekly and daily goal setting. We then revisit our goals every 3 months, and reset for the following quarter.

Prior to that I’ve had some years with no goals at all, and finished the year feeling a little flat and unfulfilled. A year had passed, and I felt like I had not progressed.

Other years I set goals however they were skewed towards university, and ignored all the other areas of life. I achieved the university grades I wanted but my physical and mental health suffered, and wasted time in toxic relationships that did not serve me.

It’s easy to do. Life is busy, and we all get caught in the minutiae of day to day life, and we don’t take the time to consider what we want from life.

I’ve had many people ask me how I have achieved so much in the last few years, so I wanted to share what I’ve learned around effective goal setting in this episode of The Females in Tech Show.

What we cover:

  • How Joel and I start our New Year (7:08)
  • How to set SMART goals, and how to break your annual goals into quarterly and weekly goals (12:53)
  • How to align your goals with your partner (20:23)
  • I share an example of an annual goal we had last year, and how we broke it down into quarterly and weekly goals (27:33)
  • Outline of our current goal setting process, and how long it takes to complete each step (30:42)
  • I share the tools we use, and provide details on how you can access the FIIT Collective Daily Goals Planner (35:09)

12 Jan 2020Starting a Tech Company with Richelle Nicols - 01300:53:16

In the latest episode of The Females in Tech Show I interview Richelle Nicols, the Founder & CEO of tech start-up, Nicco.

Like many women in tech, Richelle didn’t start there. She started her career as a lawyer, going from family law to consulting firm KPMG, and then Legal Counsel and Governance Executive for the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Richelle then moved to becoming Managing Director of two different tech start-ups, before starting her own.

Richelle now runs Nicco, a next-generation consumer engagement solution and App.

I first met Richelle at the 2019 IBM Cloud Innovation Exchange Conference in Sydney. Richelle was presenting, and shared her journey of founding her own tech start-up and partnering with IBM Garage, a division that works with customers to quickly create and scale new and innovative ideas.

Richelle’s energy and passion during her presentation was contagious, and I just knew I had to have her on the show!

There are so many golden nuggets in this episode. Here’s what we cover:

  • Richelle’s career journey from Lawyer to Founder & CEO of a Tech Start-up
  • The benefits of her Law degree throughout her career
  • Richelle shares her experience at consulting giant KPMG, and her big decision to leave
  • We talk about the differences of working for a Start-up compared with a Corporate giant
  • Richelle shares her journey with Nicco. How the idea came about, what she has learned along the way, her partnership with IBM Garage, and advice for those considering building their own cloud-based solution
  • Richelle also shares the importance of maintaining a healthy mindset when working in a tech start-up

27 Jan 2020Marketing for Startups with Best Selling Author, Jill Soley - 01400:50:59

Having a great product or service in and of itself is not enough to succeed. The reality is you need to have both a great product, and also great marketing. Unfortunately many startup businesses focus solely on the product, and don’t think about marketing early enough. The fact is marketing for startups is critical to success.

Conversely, no amount of marketing can make up for a bad product or service. Although, when done correctly, you can leverage marketing for both customer acquisition, as well as improving your product-market fit.

More than 600,000 companies start in the US every year. However than three quarters of those fail because the founders don't know how to take those products to market.

In this episode of The Females in Tech Show I interview Jill Soley, who has spent the last 16 years launching and growing innovative cloud-based software products through effective marketing. Jill is currently the Chief Product Officer at Obo, an agile product management software that addresses the high failure rates of new products.

Jill is also the best selling author of Beyond Product, a book that helps entrepreneurs and enterprise executives avoid common pitfalls, and build their ideas into successful businesses.

The #1 reason startups fail is the inability to find and connect with a market.  Beyond Product provides the missing link for entrepreneurs and startup founders to turn their ideas into successful businesses.

It’s based on Jill and co-author Todd Wilms own startup marketing experience as well as interviews with 50 successful entrepreneurs, startup investors, and business leaders from companies like Slack, Box, Linkedin, Hubspot, Zendesk, Marketo, and many others.

Bottom line, marketing for startups is essential to their success.

Here’s an outline of what we cover.

  • Jill’s career journey from media to best selling author and chief product officer (4:25)
  • Some of the challenges Jill has faced in her career, and how she overcame them (8:08)
  • The difference between mentors and sponsors, and what stage you need them (12:55)
  • We talk about her book Beyond Product, who it’s for, and what is covers (21:03)
  • We discuss some common mistakes entrepreneurs and business owners make in marketing and releasing products (33:50)
  • Why marketing is so important in technology - this is a biggie! (27:00)
  • The importance of creating an MVP, and how to get comfortable releasing a product that’s not “perfect” (36:25)
  • Her advice when pitching to investors and venture capitalists (39:49)
  • She explains the concept of always be evolving (41:10)

23 Feb 2020The Truth About Imposter Syndrome - 01600:56:19

Do you suffer from imposter syndrome? That negative self-talk saying things like “I’m not good enough”, “I’m not smart enough”, “I’m not skinny enough”, “I will never meet the one”, “I will never get out of debt”?

Is it preventing you from levelling up at work? Or asking your manager for a salary increase, or promotion?

Or maybe it’s keeping you from pursuing your dream job, or changing careers? Perhaps you want to write a book, or start your own business?

Do any of those sound familiar?

That voice in your head saying those things is your Imposter Syndrome. Also referred to as your inner critic, ego, obnoxious roommate or mean girl. Regardless of what you call it, that voice is not you, it is your limiting beliefs keeping you stuck in fear-town.

The fact is, you’re not alone. Everyone has imposter syndrome, even some of the most successful people in the world, like Sheryl Sandberg, Arianna Huffington, David Bowie, Lady Gaga and Emma Watson.

The reality is that imposter syndrome can either serve you, or break you, it’s just a matter of how you manage it.

In this episode of The Females in Tech Show, Joel and I show you how to quieten that inner critic, and leveraging those limiting beliefs to accelerate your career and achieve your big bold goals.

Here’s an outline of what we cover:

  • What is imposter syndrome (7:11)
  • Overview of masculine and feminine energy, and the role they play in imposter syndrome (15:50)
  • Examples of successful artists, actors, sports people and entrepreneurs who have admitted to having imposter syndrome (20:00)
  • How imposter syndrome can help, not hinder your career (21:00)
  • Joel and I share stories of our imposter syndrome and how it has affected our career (25:50)
  • I share my strategy for overcoming your inner critic when it arises (39:15)
  • Joel shares his holistic strategies on how to quieten your inner critic day-to-day (45:10)

09 Mar 2020Women in Leadership with Kylie McLean - 01700:48:09

On Sunday 8th March 2020 we celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD). On this day we recognise the progress we have made towards gender equality, as well as being a call to action to accelerate full equality. I also take the opportunity to reflect on the women in leadership who have inspired me over the previous year.

IWD started in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay & voting rights. At that time there were only 8 countries in the world where women were allowed to vote. And equal pay was unheard of, assuming that women were allowed to work at all.

Since then we have come a long way. Today there are women running their own businesses, as well as CEOs of large corporations.

However according to a study by IBM, only 18% of senior leadership positions – including C-suite, vice president, director & senior manager positions are held by women.

In addition, in Australia the Chief Executive Women (CEW) ASX200 Senior Executive Census 2018 reported there are only:

  • 14 female Chief Executives in the Top 200 ASX-listed organisations
  • 24 female Chief Financial Officers

So why are there so few women in leadership?

This is something I discussed with Kylie McLean in the latest episode of The Females in Tech Show. Kylie is the IBM Garage Lead, a division that works with customers to quickly create and scale new and innovative ideas. She is also the Executive Leader for Women at IBM in ANZ.

In this episode Kylie shares her insights on:

  • Why there is still a big gap of women in leadership (7:53)
  • The role confidence plays in leadership, and how to overcome your imposter syndrome (11:44)
  • Kylie shares her advice for women looking to enter a leadership role (18:20)
  • How to stay your authentic self in leadership (25:30)
  • And the Do’s and Don’ts to negotiating your next salary increase (31:54)

23 Mar 2020Empowering Females in Tech with Code Like a Girl CEO, Ally Watson - 01800:50:51

Ally Watson is the Founder and CEO of Code Like a Girl, a social enterprise dedicated to providing girls with the tools, knowledge and support to enter and flourish in the world of coding.

A backend .NET developer by trade, Ally has always loved working in technology. Despite her love for the tech, she experienced isolation and barriers associated with being a woman in a male-dominated industry.

None more so than when she moved from Scotland to Australia in 2014, and struggled to meet like-minded women in tech. Ally decided to host her own event, specifically for women in tech, with the aim of forming strong connections and female friendships. She had no idea that one event would turn into many, and become the humble beginnings of Code Like A Girl.

After 2 years of running the events as a side hustle, Code Like a Girl became Ally's full-time job in July 2017 and has continued to go from strength to strength.

Today Code Like a Girl runs a series of tech-focused events, an internship program and coding camps around Australia; bringing together local talent and like-minded girls who are passionate about coding and technology to learn, connect and celebrate each other's achievements.

In the latest episode of The Females in Tech Show, I interview Ally Watson, and talk about her career journey from artist, to Founder and CEO of Code Like a Girl.

Ally also shares:

  • Her experience of being one of the only females in her computer science degree, and why she was one of the few females to graduate (10:34)
  • Why she thinks there is a 50% drop-out rate for women in computer science (14:12)
  • We talk about Code Like a Girl, how it started, and her journey to becoming full-time CEO (19:39)
  • Why she chose a social enterprise business model, rather than being a not for profit organisation (22:16)
  • Plus, Ally shares exclusive details of their latest launch for Code Like a Girl -  this is super exciting! (32:33)

04 May 2020Slowing Down in Quarantine - 02100:09:38

The universe is always guiding you. This week it taught me a valuable lesson about slowing down in quarantine.

Ironically my meditation coach Tom Cronin told me a few weeks ago that COVID-19 was the universe telling us to slow down and focus on the important things in life. I thought that I was but turns out that I wasn’t.

I thought I was being smart, and getting ahead of the curve during isolation whilst most people were kicking back and watching Netflix. What I completely disregarded was the effect isolation would have on my mind, body and soul.

It is mentally and physically draining being locked in your apartment 24/7 with minimal opportunity to get outside. My home used to be a place that inspired me, but now all I see is work in every room, and have been guilty of starting work earlier, and finishing later.

Working in Quarantine

Add to that all of the 5 minute catch-ups you used to have at work, in the kitchen or at your desk, have now become 1 hour meetings, leaving very little time to action your to-do list. That resulted in me working longer hours, and getting stressed out because that’s impacted my ability to work on my goals.

Safe to say I am exhausted.

So instead of publishing a normal podcast episode this week, where I sound flat and tired, I thought I would step out of my comfort zone, and record a solo episode on slowing down in quarantine.

I hope you love this mini episode, and it inspires you to do more with less!

This time around she took a very different direction and decided to major in mechatronic engineering.

Today, she’s an IBM Developer Advocate, working closely with developers and open source communities around the globe. She’s passionate about sharing her experience and helping build a supportive and inclusive tech community.
