11 Feb 2022EP#063 Darren Ledger | Are You the CEO Of Your Job Search Process?00:33:37

Welcome to Episode Sixty Three (Season Four) of the Executive Career Jump Podcast with your host, Andrew MacAskill!

Darren Ledger believes that recruitment is broken - that it's not working for clients, job seekers, or candidates and frankly it's not working for recruitment companies - so he's very opinionated on where the industry needs to go and how it needs to evolve.

In today’s straight-talking episode we delve further into that topic as well as what Darren’s predicting is going to happen now in the new world of work.  We also discuss being a digital nomad and remote working, along with some fantastic job-search advice, so a very multi-layered episode that anyone on either side of the hiring equation will get a lot from.

Having worked with some high-profile sporting teams such as Manchester United and Formula 1, he dispels some of the myths around what works when you're equating sports experience to business experience.

He also shares his own redundancy experience and how it has given him the freedom to do what he wants to do and the skills that he feels have helped him along that journey.

Mark is currently helping businesses continue to grow their culture and people, develop their hybrid work model, and ensure they’ve got the right strategies in place to deal with the uncertainties ahead, as well as working as an executive coach and supporting leadership development programmes across a number of organisations.

31 Mar 2020EP#002 Craig Elvin | Tips, strategies, and how senior executives can get the most out of working with a headhunter when job seeking or making a career move.00:43:23

In this episode, I’m joined by Craig Elvin, Director at Executive Heads - a leading executive search firm based in Southampton.

I know Craig well from when we ran an executive search business together for a number of years and his experience of the SME market will be of particular interest to our listeners. For senior job searchers who are wanting to learn more about getting the most out of working with a head-hunter, this one is definitely for you.

Craig spent ten years in the British Army as a Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineer, before meeting his wife and deciding to settle down in the UK to have a family. Through his network of contacts, he was offered a job as a recruitment consultant and quickly found himself promoted into managerial roles, moving up the corporate ladder and working for some of the industry’s biggest names. Sixteen years on, Executive Heads was born, in partnership with two of Craig's former colleagues.

Within this episode hear Craig talk about his journey and the importance of your network, attitude and relationships. He also provides tips and tricks for your CV, discusses how you know when it’s the right time to leave your job and gives his opinion on the three most common mistakes candidates make on the job market.

I love the honesty in how Craig describes his journey, the expertise and insight he gives into this industry and the snippets of gold dust that the listeners are sure to take away.

31 Mar 2020EP#003 Louis Cross | How to Make an Impact and Get Hired00:43:19

In this episode, I’m joined by good friend and colleague Louis Cross, now Director at Collabz - an in-house talent company that helps small businesses play big in the talent market.

Louis has spent a decade in the recruitment industry, spending all of those years working for one company, but across six different positions, three distinctly different brands, and three different models, starting with an agency, moving to RPO and lastly in house. Each move has seen him start from the bottom and work his way up in that particular field, gaining insight into the good and bad elements of each sector and the hurdles encountered, enabling him to have a broad perspective of the industry itself. Taking everything he has learnt and, in his words, ‘mashing it all together in his own proposition’, Collabz was born.

In our conversation, Louis touches on his decade in the industry, and the attributes he looks for when interviewing people to work for him or his clients, particularly discussing traits that perhaps are not always at the forefront of people's mind or interview preparation. He covers the best way to get in touch with a potential company or recruiter and why hiring feels like such a dysfunctional process to so many people. As always, CV’s and LinkedIn profiles are a hot topic of conversation, with Louis giving his thoughts and tips to make yours stand out.

Louis brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table in our conversation, and I love his openness to touch upon characteristics that he identifies as important in an interview that many may try to hide. For anyone looking to make an impact, this episode is definitely for you.

31 Mar 2020EP#004 Becky Webber | The importance of good leadership, embracing change and being successful in recruitment00:44:54

In this episode, I’m joined by Becky Webber, the Regional Director at Tate Recruitment. With over 20 years recruitment experience, she gives us an insight into the types of things her team look for when placing candidates.

Starting her career at Thomas Cook, Becky fell into recruitment a little by accident back in 1998, taking a job at a privately owned company, which later became Tate Recruitment. Becky has stayed with the company through different ownerships, evolving through lots of change and different ways of working, which for her has been really exciting. She currently works as the Southern Regional Director for Tate Recruitment looking after eleven different offices of recruiters. A couple of years ago, Becky also set up a side project called the Positive Career Advice website, which is designed to help job seekers on the move understand what they want, how to get it and how to go through that transition.

Becky gives some great advice in this episode on how to embrace and deal with change, giving insight into the journey she has been on with her team at Tate Recruitment. With a passion for using the knowledge she has gained over the last twenty years, she delves into the importance of good leadership, and why your networks are so important. Becky also opens up about what she really looks for in a person during an interview, giving us an in depth insight into the skills that recruiters desperately want you to show during initial conversations and interviews. We talk about the importance of getting yourself noticed from other candidates, but also knowing the client.

This podcast episode is filled to the brim with take home messages and gold dust advice for both recruiters, leaders and job seekers.

31 Mar 2020EP#005 Laurent Bouvier | Culture, mission and finding people centric organisations that get the modern way of working00:40:59

In this episode, I’m joined by an old colleague Laurent Bouvier, an executive coach currently working at The Zone. With Laurent’s experience and expertise, this episode will be of particular interest to executives that are on the move.

Laurent really cut his teeth in the telco industry, holding some very senior leadership roles, with probably the biggest telco in the world today. He then went on to scratch that entrepreneurial itch, having a couple of startups which proved to be good learnings, before becoming very much an executive coach that helps both businesses and individuals succeed.  During his work as an executive coach we collaborated whilst I was running an executive search business where Laurent became very much, in my view, the go to expert in the market in terms of helping newly placed leaders get up and running in their new roles.

Within this episode, Laurent talks about his current role at The Zone, where they are trying to bring humanity back into the organisation and the challenges that they are facing. He discusses how senior leadership can be a lonely place, and how best to approach a new job role, whilst giving an insight into the importance for a recruiter to not only assess a candidate as an individual, but also how they will fit in with the team and community. He touches upon the three most common mistakes that people make in terms of their career in general, as well as giving us an insight into his favourite books and what skills he is looking to develop.

In this episode, I’m joined by Maddie Alexander Grout, who, having worked in the headhunting and recruitment world for over a decade will be sharing plenty of insights for the job seeking community on that front. She has also gone through a number of business ownership faces, is very, very active on LinkedIn and champions being a mum.

After graduating from university, Maddy began working as a Training Advisor for British Gas, before moving back down South and falling into recruitment, with it being the only industry she felt she could put her sales skills to use without selling anything! After working for one company for five years, she spent the next few years job hopping, eventually setting up her own recruitment company before moving back into internal recruitment. Since starting a family she has set up a number of successful businesses including my VIP card, which has won 14 awards in the last 2.5 years and having just gone nationwide, has the potential to be worldwide in the next six months.

In this episode Maddy talks openly about her mental health struggles, her passion for helping others and recently franchising out her business. We discuss the balance of work and family as well as touching on her time as a recruiter, including what differentiated those who were successful at interview and the importance of being yourself with a recruiter or potential client.

As the world goes into lockdown, with borders closing and companies being forced to close, it is clear we are entering an unprecedented situation. 30 Aug 2020EP#009 Zoe Tuffs | Future Proof Your Career by Building Your Personal Brand00:41:48

In this episode I’m joined by Zoe Tuffs, Founder of leadership and career coaching business TimesTen, and also an expert in personal brands.

I wanted to speak to Zoe because at this time of worry and fear about recession and unemployment I feel we need to focus and talk about the positive strategies and actions we can take that will give us a competitive edge in the world of work and career.

Zoe spent 12 years working in the high octane world of automotive event management, traveling the world organising large events and conferences for brands like Toyota and Lexus, and after a 7-year break bringing up her young children, she jumped straight back in working on an event for Google HQ and continued for the next four years building a small events business to an award-winning global agency.

Part of Zoe’s role there was to really look after employee engagement and talent attraction and she found herself coaching throughout the entire time, so in 2018, took her qualification and founded TimesTen to help ambitious women connect with their strengths and sharpen their personal brands so they can really move forward in their careers.

In this episode, Zoe shares how she believes that your personal brand is your most valuable asset within your career and how it can really help to future proof it for you.

I loved talking to Zoe and got so much from her insights and clarity around this subject and if you want to find some inspiration and positivity about what you can do to level up your career during these uncertain times...then this episode is for you!

27 Oct 2020EP#010: Amelia Sordell | How To Stand Out In A Crowded Job Search Market00:36:57

In this brand-new episode I'm joined by a good friend and colleague Amelia Sordell, pretty much the #1 personal branding guru on LinkedIn right now, and who has been my number one target guest to get on this show for a while.

There are a number of reasons I wanted her on the show, starting with the fact that Amelia's background includes headhunting internationally so she is able to share with us some great recruitment advice which will be invaluable for those listeners currently job seeking and interviewing, including advice around employer branding which is all about how employers and candidates position themselves with each other.

Amelia has also recently launched her own business which I know resonates for many listeners who are thinking about starting out on their own rather than traditional job seeking and finally she is also a mum of two young children so she shares some great insights about the elusive work life balance we all so desperately try to achieve.

Enjoy the episode!

11 Dec 2020EP#011: Neil Ewington | Crazy & Passionate About Job Search00:38:24

In this episode I'm joined by career coach Neil Ewington who is the only other person on LinkedIn who I know is as passionate and crazy about job search and career coaching as I am!

It's a content-packed episode where we discuss all things career development, starting up a business, landing that big interview, and everything in between.

Neil's had a broad career in recruitment but started to fall out of love with it when he discovered career coaching and then decided to start his own business around this - especially working with people early on in their careers which was a very un-tapped market at that point.

This podcast episode is filled to the brim with take-home messages and gold dust advice for job seekers and those looking to start their own business. Enjoy!

08 Jul 2021EP#035 Fiona Hathorn| How Women And Other Minorities Can And Must Get Into The Boardroom00:40:53

Welcome to Episode Thirty-Five (Season Two) of the Executive Career Jump Podcast with your host, Andrew MacAskill!

Today our guest is Fiona Hathorn. Fiona is the CEO of Women On Boards UK – an organisation committed to accelerating women into non-executive director roles.

In addition, Fiona is an Advisory Board Member to Spktral (a technology company that helps organisations simplify the gender pay gap reporting process), advisor to Peel Hunt (mid-cap stockbroker), and Chair of Hanx's Board Nominations Committee (FMCG start-up). She is an expert in the areas of Governance, Regulation, and Talent Management who has sat on both marketing and audit & finance committees. Fiona is also a Patron of Fight for Sight (a medical research charity) and was formerly a Director for Hill Samuel Asset Management. She has advised the board of the Thai Euro Fund and is a Judge for the Non-Executive Director Awards, sponsored by The Sunday Times. In 2020 Fiona joined King's College London's 'Global Institute for Women's Leadership' Advisory Board.

More than a third of FTSE 350 board positions are now held by women, an increase of 50% over the past five years. Women on Boards UK has played a key role in this progress, but there is a long way to go before all boardrooms have equal gender representation. What’s more, progress outside of the FTSE 350 is glacially slow and women from ethnic minority backgrounds are still woefully represented. Yet, the evidence is clear that boardroom diversity is not just about fairness but that it delivers better business results.

You will learn:

  • Why UK Boardrooms still have a long way to go with diversity
  • How you can best position yourself in order to be considered for both Director and Non-Executive Director positions
  • The steps you can take today to move towards your first Board role
