21 Apr 2022Re-writing the Story & Making History - Preet Chandi00:35:49

Send us a text

In January 2022, Preet Chandi made history becoming the first woman of colour to complete a solo expedition in Antartica. Covering a distance of 700 miles, she took just 40 days to reach the South Pole.

I first spoke to Preet back in January of 2020 when she had just returned from a self-funded training expedition to Greenland. At that point she was relatively unknown, had no sponsorship and was trying to convince the polar gatekeepers that she really did have what it takes to complete an Antarctic expedition, despite her lack of experience. Fast forward a year and she has proved to everyone that she was absolutely right. She returned from her expedition to a whirlwind of publicity and has spent the time since returning speaking to school children, inspiring them with her mantra that "Nothing is Impossible" and showing them how far courage, self-belief and determination really can take you.

This is a wide ranging and honest conversation, covering the build up to the expedition, the barriers that Preet has had to face and overcome and what motivated her to continue when thing got tough. Preet is warm, engaging and unflinchingly honest in her account of what it takes to achieve your dreams and how inspiration is usually much closer to home than we think.

08 Jul 2022Celebrating Diversity through Adventure - Pammy Johal00:38:36

Send us a text

Pammy Johal is the founder of Backbone CIC which she set up to celebrate diversity through adventure connecting underrepresented groups with nature and the outdoors. Through their work, Backbone provides opportunities for Black, Asian and minority ethnic and marginalised communities to form relationships with the outdoor and environmental sectors.

Born in the 60’s in inner city Coventry to a Sikh immigrant family, Pammy was introduced to the mountains at the age of 16 when a school trip changed her life. Pammy has been an outdoor/environmental practioner since 1979 and in 1995 it struck her hard as she noticed the lack of Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic role models in the sector, at every level, from service users to Board level and felt very strongly this had to change. This laid the foundations for the pioneering work she has driven forward over the last 25 years.

This is a raw and open conversation about the challenges Pammy has faced in her quest to open up opportunities in the outdoors for under represented communities, her frustration at the lack of progress  and the hope she has for the future as a new generation of diverse and passionate outdoor practitioners help to change the narrative and push the boundaries even further.

05 Dec 2023Running across Australia & Chasing Extraordinary - Nikki Love01:01:55

Send us a text

Nikki Love turned 50 in 2017 and decided it was time to take her love for travel, marathon running, and cross-country running to a new level. She is now on a mission to run across, around, or through as many countries that her feet can take her, bringing as many people as she can along for the run.

Her big adventures include running 63 marathons in 63 days through the UK,  a 750 mile run around Ireland, running through Malta and around Gozo and across the Netherland and an extremely muddy and cow-pat laden run from top to bottom of Wales.  On July 16, 2023 at the age of 56 Nikki set the women’s record for running across Australia from Perth to Sydney 4,044kms in 76 days, 3 hours and 43 minutes.

Driven by her curiosity to answer the question “I wonder if I can do that…” Nikki shares her adventures – the highs, lows, fun, tears and her experience of overcoming fears, doubts and obstacles as she navigates perimenopause – through her writing, speaking and film-making. Her goal is to help women know and own their place and space in the world and to keep believing and backing themselves.

This is a generous and inspiring conversation with Nikki as she shares the motivation behind her run, the highs and lows even just getting to the start line and some of the scariest moments she encountered on her run - which may not be what you think!

06 Jun 2024Cycling JOGLE and the Ripple Effect - Emma Wood00:40:35

Send us a text

In May 2023, Emma Wood embarked on a two week adventure cycling the length of the UK from John O'Groats to Land's End.

As a busy mum of two girls, with a successful career in financial services, the logistics surrounding this journey were half the battle. But having got a taste of long distance cycling during a 4 day trip cycling unsupported from Dorset to Cornwall, she was ready for a bigger challenge . Accompanied by her dad in the support van,  she set off cycling solo from the north of Scotland on the adventure of her life.

Whilst others have completed this nonetheless challenging route, Emma's story is extraordinary in that it shows what is possible amongst all the other commitments in our daily lives and the importance of taking time for ourselves s. It would have been totally understandable for Emma to say she was too busy or that she was needed by her family. But by listening to and validating the voice that told her that she needed to do this for herself,  Emma has achieved something amazing and inspired many others to dare to dream and do along the way.

This is an honest and engaging conversation about the guilt and challenges we experience as parents when we decide to head on a solo adventure as well as the benefits we encounter when doing do - and the positive ripple effect that these adventures can have on those around us too.

21 Jul 2024Tough Broad: The Power of Adventuring as We Age - Caroline Paul00:49:03

Send us a text

Caroline Paul is an author, adventurer, surfer, pilot and former firefighter who has published 7 books including The Gutsy Girl and Fighting Fire. Her most recent book Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking—How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age is an exploration into the science and psychology of outdoor adventures and our relationship with these activities,  typically associated with youth and adrenaline, as we age. As Caroline writes "Ultimately, I am my best self in the outdoors - curious, brave, and present." Tough Broad acknowledges that older women are less visible in the outdoor adventure world as they age, but seeks to explore and uncover the benefits when they do continue to participate in and take up these types of activities later in life.

In this conversation, Caroline shares what motivated her to write Tough Broad and her own thoughts on positive ageing, the importance of awe and the power of gratitude. She highlights the research around the benefits of time spent in the outdoors as well as the stories of the women she met and shared adventures with, who are finding ways to thrive into their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.

16 Sep 2024Ride to Freedom - Heather Sharp and Stephanie Quintrell (Forces Wives Challenge)00:49:28

Send us a text

In June 2023, Stephanie Quintrell and Heather Sharp completed the Ride to Freedom along with 6 other women as part of a Forces Wives Challenge expedition, tackling the challenging terrain surrounding the World War Two Freedom Trail (Le Chemin de la Liberté), across the Pyrenees Mountains on horseback. The team followed remote mountain passes that were used as escape routes into Spain by around 33,000 allied service personnel and others fleeing to safety, avoiding checkpoints and surveillance.

Achieving this challenge is remarkable in itself, but is made even more impressive by the fact that Steph, who was diagnosed with a neurological condition in 2019, is permanently dependent on a wheelchair.

In this conversation, we discuss the inspiration for the challenge, the highs and lows as well as the nuances around accessibility and the assumptions made around what can and can’t be done. It highlights how for change to truly happen, those impacted need to have a voice and be heard. But this is also the story about connections and relationships - and a remarkable group of women who supported each other to achieve something extraordinary.

17 May 2020What is an Everyday Adventure? - Introduction (solo episode)00:07:39

Send us a text

This episode is an introduction to my motivation in launching the Everyday Adventure Podcast.

I have always loved adventure and getting into the outdoors. Whether this was travelling, both with friends and alone or spending seasons working in the Alps, adventure has been a huge part of my life. As a former Army Officer, I was fortunate to have opportunities for adventurous training as well as taking part in my favourite sports of snowboarding and surfing. I have also always found adventure to be hugely important in terms of developing my resilience and confidence.

However, as I got older and found myself juggling the responsibilities of work and a family, I found that the opportunities - the freedom and the funds! - for the adventures I previously enjoyed were far more limited. Summer holidays were now more typically spent in a resort with a pool and my life was revolving around school pick ups and after school clubs! And whilst I was still inspired by the people I saw who were doing amazing trips and having wonderful adventures, it suddenly felt very far removed from my daily reality.

As a result, I started to feel as if I was losing a bit of myself - this lack of time and energy started to correspond with a questioning of my identity. Could I really identify as a surfer on the basis of a couple of sessions in small, mushy Cornish surf? Yet every time I did get in the water or on my board, regardless of the conditions, I felt my old self come flooding back. And I started to realise that it didn't matter about the size of the waves or the depth of the powder - I was getting as much joy from watching the sunlight glint on the water and those few precious minutes of reconnecting with what I needed.

I started to adopt this principle more widely in my life - every dog walk became a chance to notice something new or explore a path I hadn't been down before. The result was that instead of feeling frustrated about what I couldn't do or where I couldn't go, I started to embrace the adventure in the everyday. Ultimately what this reinforced was that adventure is a state of mind - a way of looking at the world. And whilst I knew this intellectually from my background in psychology, experiencing it in reality was fundamentally life changing.

As I started to discover this approach, I was having more and more conversations with friends and colleagues who were experiencing the same frustrations as I was. They found themselves in a life that was predominantly about managing other people's needs - and whilst they wouldn't change this, they were also starting to wonder where the "old me" had gone and question whether there was space for their own adventures in amongst their other responsibilities.

And so that was where the idea for the Everyday Adventure Podcast was born - to inspire people in a similar position or phase of their lives, and help them reconnect with their

19 May 2020Outdoor Fitness and Finding your Tribe - Liz Lowe00:17:20

Send us a text

In this episode, I talk to Liz Lowe, a freelance journalist and mother of two young children, about her adventures in taking up first wild swimming and then triathlon.

Liz is someone I have known for a while, but I became really inspired following her outdoor fitness journey on social media. She has gone from being unable to swim front crawl a couple of years ago, to completing the Wild Wye 7km swim last year, with imminent plans for the Dart 10k. She got started on her swimming adventure by joining Wiltshire Wild Swim and has since taken up triathlon, joining a local triathlon club (Team Proto-Col Multisport) and completing several Sprint tris. She also recently participated solo in the Bath Half Marathon along a canal as lockdown kicked in!

Liz talks candidly about the trepidation she experienced getting started, the sense of community she has found in both the wild swimming and triathlon clubs she joined and how she balances her fitness journey with family commitments.

You can find out more about Liz and follow her adventures over on Instagram @lizloweuk & Wiltshire Wild Swim @wiltshirewildswim

Two years ago she took the brave decision to launch The Heroine's Journey - a speaker series to give a platform for women's stories. Following the success of the London events, she is aiming to launch in New York later this year.

In this interview, Kim talks candidly about the challenges of identifying as an "adventurer", how she has managed her own fears about putting her idea out there and how taking baby steps initially can lead to great things.

02 Jun 2020Frozen Lakes and Finding Time - Rachel Forbes00:20:20

Send us a text

Last year, Rachel Forbes completed a 100km run across a frozen lake in Mongolia, on 4 months training and despite never having even run a marathon! As a result of this life changing experience, she realised that it was possible to find time for her own adventures - even working full time and as a mum to 3 boys - and has made "finding time" her mantra ever since. She has gone on to fall deeply in love with wild swimming, regularly getting up at 5am through the winter to head to the local marine lake for her fix!

In this episode, I talk to Rachel about what motivated her to sign up for the event in the first place, the challenges she faced and what she learnt as a result. We also discuss the impact this has had on her mindset towards her "everyday adventures" and how this feeds back into the rest of her life.

09 Jun 2020Race, Adventure Sports and Outdoor Spaces - Solo Episode00:07:19

Send us a text

I have long been appalled at the way in which adventure sports are framed with such a narrow lens (predominantly white, young and blonde) - the sports I love the most - surfing and snowboarding - are some of the worst perpetrators. However, I should have spoken sooner and louder about the barriers this creates and the repercussions that reach far wider than participation in the sport itself.

Born in apartheid era South Africa, I can remember when the beaches on Durban waterfront were barred to people on the basis of the colour of their skin. Whilst we were able to immigrate to the UK (as a direct result of our white privilege), here too there is an overwhelming whiteness in our countryside and outdoor spaces. Nobody has ever questioned my presence in these places or asked me where I am from.

It is time that those of us who benefit so much from being in the outdoors, notice who is being silently excluded and how - and how our actions may perpetuate this. This episode is my reflection on this - acknowledging that this absence and exclusion exists and is pervasive and questioning what can be done to ensure real and lasting change.

16 Jun 2020Paddleboards, Beach Cleans & Finding Joy - Jo Moseley00:24:25

Send us a text

In this week's episode, I speak to Jo Moseley of Healthy Happy 50. I first discovered Jo on Instagram a few months after setting up my own business. I instantly connected with her love of everyday adventures, whether that was out on her paddle board or picking up litter on her daily walks and runs. But even more than that, it was impossible not to be swept up her infectious joy and gratitude when doing these activities, as well as her openness in talking about the challenges she has faced and her message that it is never too late to start.

Jo is the Mum of two sons living on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. In 2013, she found herself sobbing in the biscuit aisle of her local Tesco’s, overwhelmed, anxious and desperate for a good night’s sleep. A friend lent her an old rowing machine suggesting regular exercise might help her sleep. It did & she has not looked back. In 2014, she rowed a million metres & marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of her Mum.

Last summer, Jo was the first woman to stand up paddleboard 162 miles coast to coast along the Leeds Liverpool Canal, picking you litter & fundraising for The Wave Project & 2 MinuteBeachClean charity. As a freelance aqua fit instructor, writer & festival speaker alongside her “day job”, she is passionate about sharing the joy of movement for our physical, mental & emotional wellbeing and for developing a kinder relationship with our bodies.

She is a huge advocate for tiny adventures & finding joy in the every day - eg wild swimming, plogging (running & picking up litter). During quarantine she climbed Everest in a Month in her backyard, raising money for her local foodbank.

Her short award winning adventure films, self taught & made on her iPhone, have been screened at adventure festivals. A film about her coast to coast adventure will be released this autumn.

Find out more about Jo at @healthyhappy50 on Twitter & Instagram.

06 Jul 2020Challenging Expectations - Heather Sharp, Founder of Forces Wives Challenge00:21:05

Send us a text

Heather Sharp is the founder of Forces Wives Challenge, a charity that aims to inspire partners of serving Armed Forces personnel to participate in and set up their own adventures.

Heather served 10 years in the Army before leaving due to the pressures of bringing up a young family. On leaving, she found her preconceptions of military spouses shattered by the diverse, dynamic and resilient group of women she encountered, all of whom had made immense personal sacrifice to support their partners' careers in the military.

Aware of the many opportunities she had whilst serving to go on operations, exercises and lead expeditions, she wanted to give the wider military community the chance to experience the same sense of purpose and shared experience. The first Forces Wives Challenge trip was an expedition to Chile to scale the world's highest volcano in March 2019 and Heather has run a number of trips - both in person and virtual - since.

In this conversation, Heather talks about her motivation for starting FWC and what inspires her to keep going when faced with challenges. She also highlights the importance of both believing in your own idea and of listening to those who support it, in order to bring a dream to life.

15 Jul 2020Adventuring With Epilepsy - Fran Turauskis00:23:08

Send us a text

Francesca Turauskis is the host of "Seize Your Adventure", a podcast focused on exploring the narratives of people who adventure with epilepsy. After being diagnosed with epilepsy in 2015, Fran hiked the Camino de Santiago solo two years later and last year, she took on a number of adventure challenges including a 100km Race to the Stones trail run.

During her hike in 2017, she became increasingly uncomfortable with descriptions such as 'brave' and 'inspirational' when people learned about her diagnosis. From there she was inspired to start normalising conversations around the condition, particularly in the outdoor adventure space. Her aim with her podcast is to ignite adventure in others and break down the misconceptions surrounding epilepsy.

In this episode, Fran talks openly about what inspired her to get started on her own adventures, the challenges she has faced both practically and psychologically and the benefits she has experienced, particularly with regards to her relationship with her body.

22 Jul 2020The adventure of becoming an author - Joyce Osei00:24:23

Send us a text

Joyce Osei is a business analyst and champion for diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Her career has seen her working in global publishing companies, as well as working with clients across a wide range of industry sectors. Earlier this year, she published her first children's book ‘The Adventures of Amma and Kwessi - In Barbados’ and it is her journey to becoming a published author, that this episode is focused on.

Joyce took the decision to write the book when she realised that there were just as many problems with diversity and representation in children’s literature as there are in the workplace. Noting the absence of any characters that looked like her children in the stories she read to them - and nobody stepping forward to fill that void - she took the brave decision to do this herself. Basing the stories on her and her family's own  experiences (with a magical twist!), she hopes that the characters and ideas that she has  developed will inspire other children to head out on their own adventures to.

In this episode, Joyce speaks openly about the journey from the initial spark of the idea to seeing her book in print earlier this year. The challenges she faced from shifting her mindset to seeing herself as a writer, to the practicalities of navigating a new field with no previous experience, will resonate with anyone who has decided to embark on a new adventure, where the journey is as life-changing as the end result.

29 Jul 2020Camping, coastpaths and "microbravery" - Zoe Langley-Wathen00:25:46

Send us a text

In 2011, Zoe set off to backpack solo along 630 miles of the South West Coast Path. Wild camping solo and wading across rivers terrified her and therefore she had put it off for 15 years. When she finally did it, it changed her life.

Since then she has been long-distance walking every year and last year she started her new venture, HeadRightOut, to encourage resilience in others by stepping outside their comfort zones and facing their fears. She recently set up the HeadRightOut Hub, a safe space for women to support each other in facing their fears without judgment.  She has also recently contributed to the book 'The Biggest Book of Yes' which launches on 1st August.

In this episode, Zoe and I talk about how to work alongside fear and take on challenges regardless. She speaks openly about her own fears and vulnerabilities and the stratagies she has used to face these. We also explore the concept of microbravery and how big change can happen one small step at a time.

05 Aug 2020Raising Adventurous Kids - Alasdair Wilcock00:27:09

Send us a text

Alasdair Wilcock is a Skier, Snowboarder, Surfer,  Mountaineer, Traveller, Naturalist / Photographer and most recently a Dad to 3 year old Neve.

Having always lived an adventurous lifestyle, Alasdair found he had to re-think his adventures when his daughter arrived 3 years ago. Like many parents, overnight his biggest challenge became trying to get out the front door! However, keen to instil in his daughter the same love of nature and outdoor adventure, Alasdair went on to re-invent his activities to include her, whether that was creating a zip line in his back garden or taking her wild swimming in the local river.

In this episode, Alasdair talks openly about the role his parents played in encouraging him to live adventurously and the resilience and confidence he gained as a result. He also shares how his relationship with his daughter has changed his ideas of what an adventure is and why he feels it is so important that she is exposed to the same outdoors lifestyle and activities that he benefited from.

18 Aug 2020Visibility, Comfort Zones and 3 Minute Dance Parties - Charlotte Fowles00:28:22

Send us a text

Charlotte Fowles is also known as The Executive Adventurer. She helps corporate leaders who are frustrated, lost or bored to achieve their fully uncompromised life without sacrificing their current success.

Always one to practice what she preaches, she has spent a lot of her life pushing herself way outside her comfort zone in pursuits such as free diving, marathon running, solo-hiking whilst on chemotherapy, and crossing the Australian outback for months in an ancient 4x4 truck. After enduring over a decade of personal trauma, she is an expert at creating triumph from tragedy and living life in spite of this, and brings this epic resilience to her coaching.

But in addition to this, and one of the reasons I wanted to speak to Charlotte for the podcast, was that 3 times a day, for 14 weeks over lockdown, she held a 3 minute dance party over zoom. Starting from an idea that came to her whilst she was out running, her audience snowballed and it turned into an event that made an enormous difference to the mental health and sense of connection of those who attended at such a challenging time.

In our conversation, Charlotte talks about what inspired her to start the dance parties and the huge benefits she personally experienced - including those she never predicted. We also cover barriers to visibility and why going out of our comfort zones is so important to our belief in what we can achieve.

26 Aug 202042 Challenges & Re-connecting with your Inner Adventurer - Dani French00:26:12

Send us a text

Dani French is a Physics Teacher, Former Royal Engineer, Mum of 2 and poster girl for The Everyday Adventure Podcast (that's her leaping off a rock on our cover photo!) And this is for very good reason...other than the fact that it's an awesome photo*, in so many ways Dani epitomises what everyday adventures and this podcast are all about.

Dani has always been pretty adventurous, but it was during her recovery from hip surgery a few years ago, that she realised that her energy had become more focused on facilitating other people's adventures than her own. As a result of this, she decided to set herself a number of mini adventures, including learning to swim (she recently completed a 5.8km open water swim!) which has since expanded into the idea of tackling 42 challenges before reaching the age of 42.

Her adventures so far have included rowing 100 miles from Lands End Peninsula to Devon, wild camping with her son and learning to do wheelies on her mountain bike. In our conversation, Dani talks about how she she reconnected with her adventurous side and how learning to embrace vulnerability has been so important in taking on new challenges, speaking out on what is important to her and finding joy in everyday moments.

02 Sep 2020Reclaiming Your Wild - Catherine Edsell, Founder of Cathadventure & The Matriarch Adventure00:28:43

Send us a text

Catherine Edsell FRGS is an adventurer and global expedition leader. An avid naturalist, she combines her passion for travel and effective conservation through independent and collaborative expedition work in the most remote areas of the world. She is a trained PADI Divemaster, Reef Check Trainer, coral reef ecologist, mountain leader, jungle trainer, motivational speaker, and yoga teacher. She has 20 years’ experience working in all manner of terrains, often with her children in tow. In our conversation, Catherine talks about why she founded The Matriarch Adventure and subsequently her company Cathadventure and how she uses wilderness expeditions to help other women re-discover their adventurous self. 08 Sep 2020Pushing Your Limits & the Kindness of Strangers - Carla Molinaro, LEJOG World Record Holder00:23:14

Send us a text

Carla Molinaro is an elite runner, running coach and adventurer who seeks events that are slightly harder than the average. She loves pushing her body to the limits by running a long way, up mountains and around islands - she has represented GB at the 100 km World Championships and currently competes for Team Massmart, an elite women's running team based in South Africa.

At the end of July 2020, Carla set a new Women's World Record running from Lands End to John O'Groats (LEJOG). Now, admittedly this is not an "everyday adventure" by most people's standards - not even Carla herself! However, what became clear from reading Carla's interviews after the race, was that the range of emotions she experienced during the event and her motivations for taking up the challenge, were very relatable to anyone who has ever decided to take on their own adventure.

In this conversation, Carla talks about what inspired her to take on such an immense challenge - especially during lockdown - what kept her going when times were tough and how the support she received along the way was unlike anything she had previously experienced in her running career.

08 Jul 2021Community, Connection and Finding Your Place - Kwesia, Founder of City Girl in Nature00:29:35

Send us a text

Kwesia is the founder of City Girl in Nature, a movement she created as a way to give back to her community. Having grown up in Deptford in SE London, she experienced many of the challenges that come with living in an area, and with people, who have often been neglected, excluded and marginalized. 23 Sep 2021Hunting For Rainbows - Emma Gray00:28:15

Send us a text

At the age of 35, Emma Gray’s husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Not only was she faced with losing the love of her life, but overnight had to come to terms with the reality of bringing up two children alone, becoming the family breadwinner and the carer to her partner. Emma found the experience isolating and lonely as she battled with her demons whilst everyone else appeared to be getting on with their seemingly happy, normal, family lives. Yet, even on the most challenging of days, Emma discovered what she called ‘Rainbow Hunting’ – looking for the smallest break in the clouds to find moments of  hope and joy.

Now widowed, Emma founded Rainbow Hunting in order to use her personal and professional experience - as a solicitor and trainee counsellor - to help others. She takes a holistic approach by inspiring people to  ensure the practicalities are taken care of, whilst helping them to find their own rainbows and learn to dance in the rain.

This is frank and honest conversation on managing grief, the co-existence of joy and pain and how looking for little moments of light can keep you going when you're not sure how.

07 Oct 2021Women Who Walk - Annabel Abbs00:44:30

Send us a text

Annabel Abbs is an award winning author whose fiction and non-fiction has been translated into over 15 languages. Her recent book "Windswept - Walking in the Footsteps of Remarkable Women" is a part wild walk, part memoir that follows Annabel's own walking experiences, interwoven with the stories of six incredible women whose lives were partly defined by their love of walking too.

Annabel decided to write the book when searching for stories of other women who walked and finding that they were missing from a predominantly male genre of writing. She set out on a mission to raise the visibility of these women and the role that walking has played for women throughout history as well as the many visible and invisible barriers they have encountered.

In this episode, Annabel shares more about her motivation for writing the book and her own relationship with walking and the outdoors. We talk about the challenges that these women - and women in general - face when seeking to undertake an activity outside of that which is considered acceptable and explore the very relevant issues around safety when walking alone. We also discuss the very many benefits that walking can bring and the difference that this has made to Annabel's own story as well.

14 Oct 2021Surfers Not Street Children - Tom Hewitt MBE00:43:02

Send us a text

Tom Hewitt, a lifelong surfer, first went to South Africa in 1990 on an anti-apartheid fact finding trip with local activists. He also spent time with peace activists in Maputo, Mozambique during Mozambique’s civil war. It was here that he met street children for the first time. Inspired by the movement against apartheid, Tom stayed on in South Africa to volunteer further. Shocked at the plight of street children in Mozambique, upon his return to South Africa, he noticed and befriended a group of street children in East London, a town in the Eastern Cape. In 1992 he started working with street children in that town as a way of supporting, in a small way, the transition of the country into the new South Africa and in 1994 he was a peace monitor at South Africa’s first free and fair elections.

In 1997, he relocated to Durban and a year later, set up the Durban Street Team which introduced surfing as an activity. This was so popular among the street children that they soon pioneered a new model for working with homeless street children which fused surfing with mentorship and care. This organisation would go on to be renamed Surfers Not Street Children. The charity  has gone from strength to strength and now works with both street children and children at risk in the downtown Point area of Durban. Surfers Not Street Children also operates in  Mozambique and in 2017 launched Girls Surf Too, specifically targeting girls living in difficult circumstances.

In this episode, Tom shares more of the backstory to Surfers Not Street Children and how it has evolved and developed over the last 20+ years. We discuss the challenges he has faced along the way and the unexpected benefits that have come from his work with the children and those who support them. We also discuss the  growing body of evidence around the power of "blue health" initiatives and his plans for the future of the charity.

28 Oct 2021Glide for Pride - Frit Tam and Frankie Dewar01:04:15

Send us a text

Frit Tam is an award winning adventure filmmaker and founder of Passionfruit Pictures and between May and July 2021, he travelled 1000 miles across England by rollerblade and bicycle.  The aim of the journey was to experience and showcase LGBTQIA+ stories and narratives through interviews and visits to historical places of significance for the community.  Frit was accompanied throughout the journey by his partner, Frankie Dewar (some of you may remember Frankie from S1 Ep23 when I spoke to her about her 3000km cycle around the UK!). Frankie was responsible for much of the filming on the trip as well providing much needed logistical and emotional support for Frit as he set out on this endeavour.

Frit and Frankie have recently launched a Crowdfunder with the aim of financing the film which aims to be the first adventure film with a transgender, East Asian protagonist showcasing the wealth of LGBTQIA+ stories that England has to offer.

In this conversation, Frit and Frankie share their experience of the journey as both protagonist and support crew. They talk candidly about the  challenges they both faced along the way as well as the unexpected benefits that arose from hearing and sharing these stories. This is a raw and personal conversation about the realities of taking on a large adventure, the importance of supportive relationships and allyship and how it is in confronting our real emotions that we find the strength and the courage to shape the direction of our lives.

11 Nov 2021Military Memories - Gina Allsop - Remembrance Day Episode00:30:30

Send us a text

Gina Allsop is a military veteran and adventurer who was supported by the charity SSAFA following a series of traumatic events including the death of her brother to cancer. Inspired to  give back, she undertook a challenge to complete 100 miles for each week of the year, raising over £10000 for the charity in the process. As a way of navigating her grief, Gina also sought solace in writing poetry.  She subsequently came up with the idea of curating a book of poems written by those connected to the Services, as a way to raise funds and awareness of their experiences.

Military Memories is a collection of poetry by veterans, serving personnel and their families telling the stories of their lives in the Services and raising money for SSAFA and Sporting Force. In this conversation, Gina shares the motivation behind the project, the challenges she has faced along the way and personal benefits she has experienced through her connections  with the contributors and supporters of the book.

25 Nov 2021Courage, Creativity and Finding Your Voice - Kitty Dimbleby00:28:55

Send us a text

Kitty Dimbleby is a writer, editor and best-selling author with over 20 years experience of writing for national newspapers and magazines.  I first came across Kitty's work on her Instagram account and was immediately captured by her wonderful poems and the photos of her everyday adventures, wild swimming and paddleboarding. She is a proud feminist and having battled with serious illnesses throughout her life, she uses writing as a way of opening conversations and covering topics that are sometimes taboo, but always with honesty and authenticity.

In this conversation, Kitty shares the motivation behind her everyday adventures and how wild swimming in particular has given her courage in other areas of her life. We talk about identity, finding the space to be creative and the power that can be found in giving voice to subjects that are difficult to address.

This is the last episode in Season 4 of The Everyday Adventure Podcast- thank you so much for listening! Season 5 will be back in early 2022, but in the meantime please check out previous episodes to hear more inspiring tales of everyday adventurers.
