31 Mar 2021Superintendent Leadership - Frank Coln01:05:21

Frank Coln strives to create an environment of constant learning on his projects.  His experiences with pull planning and the Last Planner System go beyond one size fits all approaches that often fail.  He represents a growing number of construction superintendents that openly embrace Lean and actively work towards greater collaboration, patience, respect, flexibility, accountability, and use of technology.  He is reflective and intentional about how processes are and are not working.

Frank says, “Listen to those PMs if you’re a superintendent, they’ll have a different perspective than what you have.” He was among the early integrated project delivery projects in Texas with an integrated form of agreement in the late 2000s as a Superintendent.  The Easier, Better, for Construction Show is where people working to make building easier and better share how.  Frank is committed to making construction easier and better and made numerous contributions to The Lean Builder Blog and The Lean Construction Blog.

13 Apr 2024Combating the Bungee Effect with Lean Principles - Jason Schroeder01:15:51

In this episode of The EBFC show, Felipe Engineer-Manriquez and Jason Schroeder dig into the challenges that the construction industry faces due to the 'bungee effect' – poor planning leading to volatile work schedules and frequent disruptions. They share their expertise on adopting lean and scrum methodologies and maintaining workflow on the job site, discussing their practical strategies for overcoming unpredictable situations.

Through comprehensive conversation, Jason and Felipe shed light on the wider implications of ineffective project management. They share how poor work management practices can lead to increased stress, decreased work pride, and a compromise in project quality. Understanding these facets, the duo stresses the value of adopting efficient planning strategies for enhancing work quality and productivity.

The popular traditional paradigm that 'bigger is always better' has major drawbacks. Instead, you can implement reduced batch sizes and right-sized teams to realize the benefits of frequent and consistent delivery of work. Real-world insights are shared, highlighting the benefits of experimenting with systems and understanding them to make necessary adjustments.

The episode also broadens to reflect on systemic issues affecting the industry, including housing scarcity and a declining workforce driven by socioeconomic conditions. Changemakers are at work to create conditions to serve as flagship examples and emphasize the importance of making structural changes to progress toward a productive and brighter future.

Navigate this transformative episode to gain a nuanced perspective on the construction industry, lean management, and systemic challenges. Learn how to beat the 'bungee effect' and adopt effective strategies to reinforce the resilience of your projects.

15 Aug 2020People First Construction - Stephanie Roldan01:22:12

Stephanie Roldan and I explored the people side of construction, core values, mental health, Last Planner System/Pull Planning, and encouraging our kids to join our industry. If you underestimate your span of control and influence, this episode will reveal a new perspective and share uncharted paths to new careers in the construction industry. The Easier, Better, for Construction Show is where people working to make building easier and better share how.

Stephanie's deepest passion is changing the way people work and see problems in the construction industry. She has been involved in construction for over 20 years from her time as a Journeyman Wireman apprentice to Project Manager to her current role as Director of Lean Culture. She now devotes her time to developing Rosendin employees in the office and on project sites helping them to recognize their full potential and helping them bring their greatest contribution to the world around them. Her focus on Operational Excellence is based on the belief that it is a human development strategy masquerading as an operational strategy, and therefore developing the people must be at the forefront.

17 Feb 2021Scrum in Construction - Dr. Jeff Sutherland01:11:26

Dr. Jeff Sutherland invented Scrum to help people make better products and services faster and with people having a good time doing it. Jeff Sutherland, Scrum co-creator, and Scrum Inc. Principal, Dee Rhoda, share why design & construction companies are implementing Scrum to:

✅  gain market advantage

✅  honor people to increase pride in work well done

✅  drive towards desired outcomes

✅  deliver projects on-time

✅  deliver on-budget

✅  meet customer expectations

Project teams that more quickly adapt to changes, overcome obstacles and remove bottlenecks deliver more value while having more fun too.  If you are ready to serve a design and construction project team or your organization it’s time to adopt Scrum and reliably deliver your projects safely, on-time, on-budget, and to customer’s expectations. Lean and Scrum together are Jeff's recommendations for companies that want to survive today and tomorrow.

09 Nov 2022No Lean Fluff, Applied Industrial Engineering with Dr. Shahrukh Irani01:01:02

⚠️ Warning ⚠️ This episode is not for the easily offended Lean practitioner. Dr. Shahrukh Irani is an experienced industrial engineer specializing in high-mix, low-volume Lean implementations. Shahrukh has studied Lean and is a practicing industrial engineer, author, and teacher. In his own words about his book, “WARNING! This book [Job Shop Lean] is written by an Industrial Engineer who never worked at Toyota. But that did not deter me! I figured out that whatever the general public knows about the Toyota Production System aka LEAN is IE [Industrial Engineering] that Toyota used in the 1900s. And IE in the 1900s was not enabled by Operations Research, Data Science and a horde of software tools.” His favorite place to be is where people implement Job Shop Lean in various manufacturing facilities like forge or machine shops, fabrication facilities, and shipping departments. He has applied lean problem-solving to product family formation, work cell design, production scheduling, and proven techniques to drive continuous improvement.

22 Jun 2022Changing How to Build with Hal Macomber Part 200:50:47

Hal Macomber says, “Lean is NOT a cost-cutting approach. Lean is a people development approach.” The current state of construction is changing. More and more people are changing how we build. In this continued interview, Hal shares what actions you can take to build higher team performance while building new capabilities including his standard approach for improving project delivery. When we focus on people and improving construction flow, we will be engaged in better strategies to minimize the impact of variation and complexity.

"Use Flow as your improvement metric. Engage the people doing the work, that is how to make positive changes, and continue learning." Focus on flow, use Takt Planning, and heed the production laws. The Four Production Laws include:

  1. The Law of Variation
  2. The Theory of Constraints (bottlenecks)
  3. Little’s Law (batch size and durations)
  4. Kingman’s Forumla (capacity utilization and variation)

Currently, the United States construction industry now leads with the highest suicide rate at 50 people taking their lives for every 100,000 industry workers according to the CDC. There are about 11 million industry workers as of 2019.  We share ideas to provide help to those in need and build up our own mental health. 02 Mar 2022Continuous Improvement Passion with LaShira Champion-King00:52:42

The unknown enables us to grow when we take on new challenges. You don’t have to leap into it alone when it comes to improving your work. LaShira Champion-King is a passionate builder dedicated to improving project delivery and has helped many construction project teams adopt the continuous improvement mindset. She shares her knowledge and experience in providing value while minimizing waste throughout different projects. She has decades of experience helping people transform to make their project delivery easier and better.

Gifts and Hooks Introduction Activity

Give each person four sticky notes. They will use 3 to state a gift they give to the group (e.g., experience, knowledge of what hasn't worked, Innovation), and one sticky will state a "hook" that will keep them fully engaged in the meeting/workshop (e.g., focusing on the future, open environment). Then post the sticky notes to show commonalities among the group.

*The use of sticky notes here is a part of "ninja Scrum" for LaShira. It’s her way to start people off with the process without much suspicion.

14 Sep 2022Digital Transformation with Bob Armbrister00:46:04

"Adapt or die." That isn't a trite phrase. Consider your company. Is it adapting or trying to remain unchanged? Let's solve the big problems. Bob Armbrister knows firsthand how hundreds of construction companies can use technology to adapt and transform. Bob is the President and CEO of Spark Business Works, a Michigan-based company specializing in building custom digital tools for businesses in the construction industry. Watch/listen to discover why digital transformation tools matter, how business leaders can bounce back from failure during economic downturns, and why construction is one of the most laggard industries regarding technology adoption. Construction businesses getting up to speed with their digital transformations results in easier, better, and faster work without burdening people already working hard to build.

29 Sep 2021The Lean Tech Problem in Construction with Nathan Wood01:06:21

What do you recommend for people who resist new construction technology, innovation, lean construction, or combinations of these tools and principles as problems? Nathan C. Wood knows that projects don't have one size fits all solutions or approaches. He has worked on hundreds of projects across the US, Europe, and the Middle East. Nathan founded SpectrumAEC with a clear goal — solving the human barriers to new processes and technology adoption.

Nathan is an innovation influencer across the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Nathan’s experience with Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), Lean process improvement, and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) has led him to realize how even proven technology solutions can often result in adoption failure and lost ROI. As Executive Director of the Construction Progress Coalition, Nathan blends his passion for open collaboration with real-world skepticism to produce a pragmatic strategy digital standards adoption in design and construction. When not fighting for open standards, Nathan also supports the people and process transformation as Chief Enabling Officer of SpectrumAEC. Nathan continues to support industry progress through speaking engagements, research publications, and workshop facilitation.

13 Oct 2021The Lean Builder with Authors Keyan Zandy and Joe Donarumo01:10:29

Keyan Zandy, Chief Operating Officer, and Joe Donarumo, Senior Superintendent, authors of The Lean Builder joined guest host, Jesus (Jesse) D Hernandez Jr, The Learnings and Missteps Podcast, and Felipe Engineer-Manriquez to build out a dialogue about why they wrote the book, why the industry needs more collaboration, and what we can all do to make construction easier and better today.

The Lean Builder is a story and playbook for builders by builders. It features a fictional tale about a newer general contractor superintendent tasked with running the most complicated project of his career. The story includes the all too common challenges in modern construction — lack of communication, coordination, and waste. The story comes to life with dialogue among the characters including a mentor that shares Lean Construction experiences, tools, and processes to help. The book’s second part includes a playbook for Daily Huddles, Visual Communication, The “Eight Wastes,” Managing Constraints, Pull Planning, The Last Planner System™ and Percent Plan Complete.

07 Jul 2021Finding Your Tribe in Construction with Kate and Millicent01:18:06

How do you find people in design and construction working to make our industry better than they found it? Often you find them in genuine conversations sharing honestly about how things are and what we are working on today. Kate Simons and Millicent Drabble are two such individuals that are transforming the industry from within. Incremental steps taken regularly with the right people make a community, a tribe, that work together on meaningful changes.

Kate’s passion is learning, coaching, and continuous improvement.  Through her role as Director of Scheduling and Controls at Shawmut Design and Construction, you can find her talking about flow, predictability, human connection, quality, creating value, and helping people translate plans and ideas into action.  She is incredibly lucky in that she gets an almost daily opportunity to help jobsite teams better leverage their individual strengths, solve problems and communicate more effectively.

Kate specializes in Collaborative Planning, Scheduling, and Team Alignment/Communication.  She recently volunteered to re-kickstart the New England Lean COP and has spent the last year trying new and scary experiences [like being on a podcast].

A proud poetic pragmatist, Millicent Drabble firmly believes in the power combination of being technically skilled, people savvy, and curious. With a career in the built environment that encompasses design, construction, operations, and maintenance across five countries, she knows that project management and risk management are unifying dialects across stakeholders, cultures, currency, and expectations. It’s collaborating with and learning from a diverse array of people that really gets Millicent excited, and in her role as Manager of Construction Operations for Shawmut Design and Construction’s West Region, she relishes the ability to do this, not only within the organization but with peers in the industry through the Urban Land Institute.

Having (almost) mastered the art of embracing uncertainty as a global nomad, Millicent leverages her leadership identity to inspire people and teams, by nurturing the confidence required to fail and evolve – we are in the business of problem-solving after all!

21 May 2024Effective Management Through the Theory of Constraints with Thomas LaMay01:08:18

Dig into the Theory of Constraints with Thomas LeMay in this compelling episode. Get an in-depth insight into the management tool introduced by the renowned physicist, Eliyahu M. Goldratt, which has revolutionized business strategies. Thomas kicks off by recommending Goldratt's breakthrough book, The Goal, providing insights into Goldratt's ideas and how to apply them using the constraint log tool. This episode explores understanding, identifying, and managing constraints in different contexts and how this leads to effective project completion.

Discover real-world examples of constraint management in complex situations such as infrastructure design and logistics. Understand how physical and non-physical constraints, if not managed effectively, can escalate into significant problems, leading to cost overruns, delays, and safety hazards. The discussion also highlights the importance of employing strategies and tools such as constraint logs to effectively mitigate these issues.

From understanding work-life balance to mastering construction skills, the episode explores various facets of constraint management. It emphasizes the importance of leadership, hands-on training, and an understanding of constraint management in achieving mastery in construction skills. Discover how visual mapping of non-physical constraints can give foremen and site supervisors a clearer picture of potential obstructions.

The episode concludes with a critical discussion of mental health issues in the construction industry. We normalize the need for mental health via continuous dialogue, organizational support, and practical resources to address mental health effectively. Learn how different theories and techniques, such as Goldratt’s theories and Scrum Patterns, can be integrated to manage constraints effectively and aid in personal and professional improvement.

26 Oct 2022Does Lean Construction Training Lead to Learning with Rebecca Snelling & Dan Fauchier01:11:08

Be cautious of what you choose to learn. Some ideas take deep roots. Rebecca (Martin) Snelling and Dan Fauchier learned about Lean Construction, and it transformed their lives, work, and friendship on a billion-dollar project. Today they each coach people, organizations, and leaders to transform design and construction. When making a change, be aware that people may actively work against it. Beyond just Lean Construction tools, these two know how to influence projects and company culture. People that find ways to grow themselves separate learners, followers, and leaders.

15 Feb 2023We All Deserve a Safe Project With Kaitlin Frank00:41:35

Kaitlin Frank is a former superintendent, multi-generation builder, and now CEO at eMOD Safety Inc. She loves construction and leads her company like a well-managed building project using Sprints (#Scrum). eMOD’s team of experienced commercial construction superintendents, project managers, and safety officers made a dedicated safety solution to efficiently manage, track, and comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations right from their fingertips.

Construction workers and management are under increasing pressure to deliver on-time and under-budget, despite facing increasing regulations and hazards. Analog traditional project management processes lead to poor accountability, a lack of foresight, zero visibility, low productivity, and an inability to continuously improve. Kaitlin has done the research and found that 7 out of 10 front-line builders put productivity above safety and cited their work as a priority above their physical well-being. Construction fatalities are greater than even military deaths per year. We owe this and the next generation of construction owners, insurance companies, general contractors, subcontractors, and tradespeople safe projects.
