02 Nov 2024 | Talking about Sexual Abuse and Eating Disorders, with Patty Cabot | 00:43:51
Before I launch into this week’s episode, I just want to mention a trigger warning as my guest this week talks about sexual abuse. In the episode, we don’t go into the details of the specific abuse, however, this episode may still be triggering for you, if you, or someone you know has experienced abuse. Make sure you take care of yourself. If this is not the right time, you may wish to give this episode a miss. Today I am talking to Patty Cabot, author of the book ‘Not That Girl Anymore’ and someone who is passionate about raising awareness around sexual abuse. Starting in her teens, Patty battled drastic weight fluctuations and thought it was what prevented her from having romantic relationships. Desperate to break the cycle and open herself to love, at age 38 she started working with a therapist specialising in eating disorders. The therapist believed Patty’s weight changes and her relationship with food were a symptom of childhood sexual abuse, and only by resolving it could she have the love she wanted. In the episode today, Patty talks about sexual abuse and the link with eating disorders. She explores the shame and secrecy experienced by sufferers. She talks us through her healing journey and the different therapies that helped, along with meditation and other tools. Patty showed incredible tenacity and resilience in healing, walking a therapy journey that spanned 12 years. She has emerged the other side with deep self-awareness, has healed her relationship with food and is open hearted and feeling her emotions, in way that she never dreamed possible. This is truly inspiring episode about what is possible with healing. Let’s get to the conversation.

The links to those episodes are below if you want to listen. Today, Brooke is going to discuss how grief can be a function in eating disorders. She is going to name the different types of grief and the different types of losses you can experience; as grief is a type of trauma. She is going to explain how eating disorders are a form of coping and how a focus on food and body can be soothing or numbing from grief, or even a way to express pain from grief. Brooke explains how an eating disorder can even be a way to not feel as lonely or alone through your own grief She then goes on to talk about the different griefs we might notice in recovery. For example: - . The grief of accepting that you can't do treatment alone and need a community. . The grief of "pausing" on life (school, work, etc) to go to treatment to get your life back. . The grief of realising that your eating disorder doesn’t serve you anymore, even if it did at some point in the past' . The grief of life without the eating disorder. . The grief of your past self when maybe you have lost your authentic self to the ED. . The grief of losing your past body or your pre/post recovery body. I know you’re going to really enjoy this thought provoking episode, as Brooke really dives into the deeper issues and gives wholehearted permission to grieve along the healing road. 15 Oct 2023 | The Incredible Power of Mentorship in Eating Disorder Recovery with Tessa Peters (Been There App) | 00:33:14
Today I'm speaking with Tessa Peters, CEO and founder of Been There, a charity app dedicated to helping those with body image struggles get paired with a mentor and find the support they need. Tessa was plagued with body image struggles from her earliest childhood days, into her teens and twenties and also struggling with eating disorders. She felt incredibly alone and misunderstood, and was desperate to find someone removed from friends and family, who she could trust and openly share here struggles with, someone who had been in a similar situation to her. Tessa saw counsellors, dietitians and therapists – but she felt that none of these worked for her fully and they lacked relatability. During Tessa’s own journey she eventually found a Mentor and still speaks with him today. The value of this relationship and the impact it has had on her life, has been life-saving. Been There’s volunteer Mentors are here to support people through their own journeys and make sure that no one feels alone. In the episode today, I speak to Tessa about her history of eating disorders and body image issues, and why she felt so passionately about creating Been There. I explore more about the power of mentorship that this incredible charity offers. 15 Jan 2025 | We Need to Talk About Chewing and Spitting (C and S) | 00:06:17
Chewing and Spitting (C and S) is a shameful secret sadly suffered by many people with eating disorders. It’s a potentially triggering and tricky topic to talk about, but it’s a subject that needs a conversation and raised awareness. It’s often overlooked in regular eating disorder assessments, as not recognised as an official disorder under mental health classifications. You can struggle with C and S, if you have anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, OSFED or disordered eating. It might be something you experience occasionally, in addition to other behaviours such as purging or over-exercise.It may be something that you struggle with multiple times per day. In this episode, I talk about Chewing and Spitting, the costs of this and how to begin to stop the behaviour. I hope that you find it helpful.

She helps chronic dieters heal their relationship with food & their bodies, and develop realistic and lasting health-promoting habits. Sabrina has been on her own food healing journey through her battle with orthorexia, disordered eating, body dysmorphia and yo-yo dieting. Having experienced this for many years, she deeply understands what it’s like to have your entire life revolve around food & your body. After discovering what actually works in recovery, to stop feeling out of control around food and understanding the psychology of behaviour change, Sabrina now supports women all over the world to help them find true health, free from obsession & guilt. If you would like to hear Sabrina’s story, she has been a previous guest on the podcast and the link is in the show notes. In this episode today, Sabrina introduces us to a valuable tool that can be used in eating disorder recovery. 13 Jul 2024 | Working with Neuro-divergent Individuals and Eating Disorders, with Cara Byrne | 00:47:45
Today I have a returning guest to the podcast and I’m talking with Cara Byrne – an integrative humanistic psychotherapist based in Ireland. She is the founder of Hike Psych – offering walking and talking therapy in nature for her clients, combining her love of nature and psychotherapy. Cara has always been fascinated by other human beings and the experiences that shape them. As a child, she was the person that people confided in with their problems if they needed support. Cara’s interest and enthusiasm to support others, led her to train in psychotherapy. Cara also has her own food healing journey. Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 3; this understandably led to a focus and preoccupation with food, with carbohydrates needing to be counted and portions weighed to balance blood sugar levels and to manage insulin doses. Growing up, Cara also experienced being in a larger body in a naturally slim family. Cara’s family relationships were warm and accepting however she did experience some judgement and weight stigma outside of the family. In her late teens, Cara struggled with restrictive eating and inevitable binge eating, which then worsened following the birth of her first child. In the last few years, she has been on a healing journey in her own relationship with food and her body, leaning towards intuitive eating principles and finding a greater level of body neutrality and acceptance, all whilst navigating this around type 1 diabetes management. Since she began her therapeutic work in 2011, Cara has worked with a vast number of clients dealing with many different issues across the mental health spectrum however has a specialist interest in food, body image, type 1 diabetes, Health At Every Size and neurodiversity. In Cara’s previous conversation on the podcast, she talked about her healing journey with food, navigating type 1 diabetes and about the walking and talking therapy that she practices with her clients at Hike Psych. Do go back and listen to that episode if you would like to. The link is in the show notes. Today, Cara is going to talk all about neurodiversity and eating disorders. She is going to explain how neurodivergent individuals can be more vulnerable to developing eating disorders and the reasons for this. Cara will talk about different neurodivergent diagnoses and vulnerabilities to eating disorders. In her practice, Cara works regularly with people who have been diagnosed as neurodivergent late and she is going to share her experiences of supporting people in navigating this, around their relationship with food. Cara’s huge compassion and enthusiasm for her work shines through in this conversation. I hope that you enjoy it.

18 Dec 2021 | Eating Disorder Recovery and Being a Passionate Foodie, with Author and Food Expert, Hannah Howard | 00:37:02
Today I’m talking to Hannah Howard, from New Jersey, where she lives with her husband, daughter, new baby son and very cute puppy. Hannah is a writer and food expert who spent her formative years in New York eating, drinking, serving, bartending, cooking on a line, flipping giant wheels of cheese, and managing restaurants. She loves to write about delicious things, teach food writing classes, and might just spend all day at a market shopping for fruits and veggies. Her memoir, Feast: True Love in and Out of the Kitchen, debuted as Amazon's number one bestselling memoir in 2018. Her new book Plenty: A Memoir of Food and Family, is recently out and available to buy. Hannah’s relationship with food has been profoundly complicated. On the one hand having a love and passion for it, as a real foodie, on the other hand, struggling with an eating disorder. Hannah’s book PLENTY is where Hannah shares her personal reckoning with loss and self-love as she struggles with the ghost of an eating disorder. Her journey is both geographical and psychological as she travels the globe –from New York to Oslo to Italy to name a few of the destinations travelled. Through a web of vignettes, Hannah reflects on her friendships with a diverse cast of women, these being strong female mentors, who have taken on meaningful, creative work with purpose and potential in the male-dominated food industry. Using drippy, delicious imagery, she describes enviable meals and expeditions, finding love and community, and how food has connected her to family and friends. Alongside this, weaving in her own personal journey, in ongoing eating disorder recovery, learning to trust and accept her body and dealing with a devastating pregnancy loss along the way. Hannah’s work has been featured in New York Magazine, VICE, SELF, Thrillist, Serious Eats, Bust, refinery29, Salon, and many others. In this episode, you’ll hear about Hannah’s recovery story, her experiences as a passionate foodie, writing books and in dealing with life’s loves and losses. I hope that you enjoy the episode. 17 Apr 2021 | Being Highly Sensitive is a Superpower | 00:17:46
People with eating disorders often have the trait of being highly sensitive. What this means is that you feel things deeply, it’s like you have a thin skin to the world and at times, this can feel overwhelming. Growing up, it may have left you feeling different or as though you don’t fit in. You may have felt that others just don’t get you; you're ‘too much’, ‘overly emotional’ or 'too sensitive'. If you relate, you may view your sensitivity as a disadvantage and a cumbersome thing that you have to bear; something that makes life excruciatingly intense. However, there is a different perspective. Anthon St. Maarten says, 'Highly sensitive people are too often perceived as weaklings or damaged goods. To feel intensely is not a symptom of weakness, it is the trademark of the truly alive and compassionate'. In this episode, I talk about some of the advantages of being highly sensitive and embracing this side of yourself. I hope that you enjoy! Today I’m talking to Emma Carter – author, mother, emotional coach and therapist. Emma was born in a small town in South Wales and now lives in Derbyshire with her two children, a cat who likes nothing more than jumping on her laptop when she is working, and her scruffy but adorable dog who melts everyone’s heart. Emma has always been passionate about helping others, which led her into a career in healthcare. Continuously searching for solutions to help her daughter, who was suffering from anorexia nervosa, she has completed several courses and gained a better understanding of mental health illnesses and eating disorders. This ignited a fire in her belly to make a difference and she is now a trained emotional coach and therapist. By listening to other parents and carers, Emma saw a need to share her story by writing a book – Slaying Monsters, Dodging Doughtnuts. Writing this book has been a cathartic way to help her deal with her daughter developing anorexia and she hopes that it will offer support to others on the same path. Emma admits to being a fan of Welsh rugby and loves watching matches with her family, particularly if they win. When she is not writing or supporting her daughter, she enjoys spending time outdoors, walking her dog and taking photographs. In the episode today, you’ll hear all about Emma’s ongoing journey in supporting her daughter through anorexia nervosa. Emma shares openly her coping strategies for staying sane. She talks about mistakes she’s made and what has helped most. This is an incredible conversation and will be hugely inspiring and supportive for anyone listening who is supporting someone with an eating disorder. I hope that you find it helpful. 11 Feb 2023 | Healing, Relationship with Food and Body Image, Fitness (Untangling Nuance of Disordered v Healthy Approaches), Health At Every Size, Motivational Interviewing and More, with Jonny Landels | 00:43:41
Today, I’m talking to Jonny Landels, founder of Next Step Nutrition. Jonny is a lover of musicals, craft beer and great coffee, and he is a nutritionist, strength coach, and online health coach. Jonny works with chronic dieters to support them to ditch the diet mentality, overcome disordered eating habits, improve body image and holistic wellbeing to finally get results that last, in a sustainable way that suits their goals and values. Jonny uses a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, which focuses on building internal motivation for change. Jonny hasn’t always had the best relationship with food and his body. He was teased about his weight as a child. This led to an obsession with getting shredded and changing his body, believing that this would be the solution to confidence and self-esteem for his previous performing career. Over the years, Jonny has been involved heavily in the fitness industry as a Crossfit coach and with a passion for health and nutrition. However, this led him to some very dark places, in relationship with food, body image and wellbeing. His journey to finding a more holistic place of wellness has inspired him to then support and encourage others to do the same in his coaching work. This episode today is absolutely packed with nuggets of wisdom to support you on your recovery journey. Jonny talks about healing his own relationship with food and exercise, and the ups and downs of this. He untangles the nuances in determining whether your relationship with food or exercise is disordered. Jonny explains his health centred approach, focusing on changing behaviours (HAES aligned) and how you can put this into practice. He talks self-compassion, motivational interviewing, body image and more. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. 09 Apr 2025 | 5 Emotions that Drive Binge Eating | 00:19:37
Binge eating is not simply scoffing an extra biscuit, with your morning coffee break. Instead, it involves eating fast, an extremely large amount of food (more than you would eat for lunch or dinner), and usually in secret. It can feel like a dissociative or ‘out of body’ experience. You are fully present and grounded on earth, but it feels as if demon has swept over you and taken all rational decision making away. Binge eating can fleetingly be euphoric and pleasurable. This is short-lived before guilt, shame and self-loathing descend like a dark cloud. Plus, the physical consequences of feeling over-full are deeply unpleasant and sometimes painful. Binge eating can happen across the different eating disorders and within disordered eating. You might have anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder or OSFED (Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder). Or you may not fit neatly into a diagnostic box. Fundamentally, if you are bingeing and your symptoms are causing you distress, you are worthy of support and help. In this episode, I discuss 5 emotions that drive binge eating and how to cope differently.

18 Sep 2022 | Type 1 Diabetes, Binge Eating, Body Image and Hiking Therapy, with Cara Byrne | 00:41:16
Today I’m talking with Cara Byrne – an integrative humanistic psychotherapist based in Ireland. She is the founder of Hike Psych – offering walking and talking therapy in nature for her clients, combining her love of nature and psychotherapy, and Cara also works online.
Anyone listening that has experience of type 1 diabetes will be truly empathetic to the chronic burden of living with diabetes and how tricky it can be to manage your relationship with food. It’s hard to be relaxed and spontaneous with all the tracking and detail focus required.
In this conversation today, you will hear about Cara’s healing journey, and the ups and downs along this road. She also explores how she supports her clients today. There are not many psychotherapists who combine walking and talking therapy and Cara shares some interesting insights on this. I hope that you enjoy the episode. 31 May 2023 | Competition and Comparison with Others and Eating Disorders | 00:19:48
A Bite Size episode exploring comparisons and competitiveness in people with eating disorders. It’s very common that people with eating disorders can feel competitive with one another. Eating disorders are very destructive illnesses and you can almost feel that you are never sick enough. I think the competitive/comparing phenomenon is also rife in daily life with social media etc. It is easy to look sideways and to notice what others are doing/having and feeling a lack. You compare yourself and then you don’t feel good enough. In this episode, I dive into how to manage this. I explore ways to interrupt the competitive mindset and also to look deeper into what lies underneath. Often, envy and jealousy of others can indicate our own unmet needs and give an entry point to considering personal wants and desires. I hope that you find this helpful. 15 Feb 2025 | The Incredible Benefits of Art Therapy in Eating Disorder Recovery, with Alexandra Lederman | 00:36:31
Today, I’m talking with Alexandra Lederman, an art therapist working in Melbourne, Australia. After working as a fine artist and discovering the benefits and value of the creative process, Alex knew that she wanted to help others learn how to express and communicate through art. Alex’s experience lies in therapeutic support for diverse population groups, including young children and their families, adolescents and the elderly. Her approach is person centred, strengths-based and aims to work with the individual and their wider network. Her personal strength is the ability to incorporate the visual arts into therapeutic healing and growth. Alex works using a lens from Polyvalgal Theory, which helps her to understand her own emotional state, as well as being able to meet her clients where they are at and help them to find a sense of safety, regulation, play and connection. In the episode today, Alex talks about her own eating disorder recovery journey and how art was an integral part of this. She talks about the role of art in eating disorder recovery, how it can help, support and heal. Alex explains about the use of Polyvagal Theory and Internal Family Systems in her work. She also talks about her upcoming ‘All Your Colours Programme’, starting in May 2025, for people with eating disorders. This is an integrative specialist online therapy group for people with eating disorders (at any stage in their recovery). This is such an interesting episode and opens the mind to many creative possibilities available in recovery, outside conventional treatments. I hope that you enjoy it.

Marianne was a full-time academic for 12 years and had a part-time eating disorder practice for much of that time (until she left the university) and went into private practice full-time in 2018. 20 Aug 2021 | Intuition, Empathy, Psychic Ability and Healing with Katie Beecher | 00:42:22
Today, I’m talking to - Katie Beecher – Medical and Spiritual Intuitive, based in the U.S. I don’t know if you’ve heard of a medical intuitive before, but this is someone with psychic abilities, who uses these abilities for greater insight into some aspect of well-being. No one is suggesting that medical intuitives could replace consultations with doctors, psychiatrists, nutritionists, or any kind of medical professional. But if you value the role of gut instinct and following your own intuition, you probably get a sense of the incredible power in listening to this. Katie has had intuitive, empathic and medium abilities since she was a young child but was fearful of them until she entered therapy with a Jungian Psychologist for an eating disorder at the age of 16. Extraordinarily, Katie reached out for help on her own, independently from her parents., which was a brave and bold decision. Katie found that developing bulimia and depression, although taking her to a very dark place at the time, ultimately it was one of the best things that happened to her. Through healing in therapy, Katie learned how to connect to her intuition, accept and understand her intuitive and psychic gifts and find self-love and acceptance. This foundational healing work also inspired Katie for her later work with clients as both a therapist and medical intuitive. Katie powerfully believes that connection to intuition, self-love and self-acceptance can be a channel for anything, including healing. She has documented success with many illnesses including Lyme Disease (self-recovered), digestive issues, cancer, viruses, autoimmune diseases, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, adolescent and childhood concerns and other issues. Katie has also written a book about her work as a Medical Intuitive and how others can heal and enhance their lives using the same techniques she uses in her readings. It is called Heal from Within: A Guidebook to Intuitive Wellness. It will be published by St. Martin’s Press in February, 2022 and is currently available for pre-sale. This is a fascinating insight into a different way of approaching healing. Katie’s story and work is inspiring and will offer reflections and encouraging perspectives that many of you will relate to. 25 Sep 2022 | LGBTQ, Vegan Meal Plans and Female Leadership with Dr. Mascolo (Alsana Eating Disorder Recovery Treatment) | 00:35:42
Today, I’m talking to Dr. Margherita Mascolo from the United States, who is the chief medical officer at Alsana, a nationwide centre that treats eating disorders. Alsana is an eating recovery community and treatment provider that helps adult clients of all genders achieve lasting eating disorder recovery and whole health. Alsana has in-person programmes in California, Alabama and Missouri and virtual programmes that serve clients across the USA.
Dr. Mascolo, leads the medical component of Alsana’s Adaptive Care Model®. She has over 10 years of hands-on experience and extensive knowledge in the treatment of eating disorders. She works closely with Alsana’s medical leadership on the development and implementation of their medical care.
Prior to joining Alsana, she served as the Medical Director at ACUTE Centre for Eating Disorders at Denver Health. Additionally, Dr Mascolo is board-certified in Internal Medicine, has published multiple peer-reviewed articles on the medical complications of eating disorders, travels nationally and internationally to talk about this research, and has earned her certified eating disorder specialist (CEDS) certification.
In this episode, I hear about the groundbreaking work Dr. Mascolo and her Team are doing. The Alsana treatment centre prides itself on individualised treatment, which sets it apart from regular eating disorder treatment centres. They have found that 40 per cent of Alsana clients identify as LGBTQ and they have adapted their care model to meet the needs of this community, acknowledging that these needs are often overlooked in many other treatment places. Alsana is also the first treatment centre to launch a vegan programme for clients and recognises some unique benefits of having a strong female leadership.

01 Jun 2024 | The Use of Storytelling and Metaphor in Eating Disorder Recovery, with Dr. Anita Johnston | 00:41:22
Today I’m talking to Dr. Anita Johnston Ph.D., Depth Psychologist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myth, Metaphor and Storytelling, which has been published in seven languages. Dr. Anita was a pioneer in eating disorders therapy and has been treating eating difficulties and body image distress for over 35 years. She has developed eating disorder programs nationally and internationally and currently serves as Founder and Executive Director or Ai Pono Hawaii Eating Disorders Programs which has a residential program in Maui. Dr. Anita is very aware that as humans, we can understand complex concepts using metaphor in memorable ways – we love stories and relating this to real life. In society and in eating disorder recovery in general, we often use left brain, logical ways of healing, whereas engaging with our creativity and imagination engages the right brain, and for many people, this is where change actively occurs. Dr, Anita is passionate about this. In this episode today, Dr. Anita does a deep dive into cracking the code of disordered eating using metaphor and storytelling. She opens her treasure chest of metaphors for us today. She also shares about the neuroscience and brain chemistry changes that occur when we suddenly make a powerful recovery shift. This is a fascinating conversation and I hope that you enjoy it. 30 Dec 2023 | Psychological and Mindset Shifts in Recovery (Part 2): Focusing on Emotions | 00:52:14
Although eating disorder recovery requires behaviour change and a focus on food, it also requires psychological and mindset work. If this part of recovery is not addressed, you are at risk of being stuck in a quasi-recovered place or simply thinking that 'recovery doesn't work for me'. This is part two of what was going to be a two-part series (but may become three or four!) on all things psychology and mindset in eating disorder recovery. I talk about early life, emotional coping, emotional intelligence and learning to process emotions in a healthy way. I hope that you find it helpful.

20 Aug 2022 | Practical Steps for Supporting your Loved One with an Eating Disorder - The New Maudsley Animal Model | 00:36:10
This episode explores how to support your loved one when they're struggling with an eating disorder. I talk through the New Maudsley Animal Model - the wonderful model created by the Maudsley Eating Disorder Service in London, UK. The model uses animal metaphors to educate and support carers in their communication with their loved one. Being a carer is hugely challenging. With the best of intentions, we can go off track with our communication and inadvertently strengthen the ed voice. The Model simplifies communication and empowers carers with the skills to create a motivational and hopeful environment for change. I also talk through some of the nuances of practically putting this Model into practice, based on unexpected personal experience recently of supporting someone close to me. I hope that you enjoy the episode. To find out more about the New Maudsley Animal Model:- https://thenewmaudsleyapproach.co.uk/pdfs/AnimalAnalogies.pdf

Today, I’m talking to Shannon Western. Shannon is a nutritionist who specialises in nutrition counselling for disordered eating. She founded Ease Nutrition Therapy because she saw a huge need for compassionate, person-centred care to help people feel better around food. In this episode, Shannon talks about her approach in supporting clients in healing disordered eating. She is particularly passionate about shining a light on binge eating struggles, as this area is still often overlooked in the disordered eating community.
Shannon is massively encouraging of supporting her clients to enjoy food for health, satisfaction and pleasure. She shares her thoughts on meal plans, considering if you really need one and if so, who might benefit most. She also dives into self-care and how we can decompress and switch off from the busyness of life. Shannon also explains the importance of getting back in touch with childhood foods and genuine food loves. She talks about why she doesn't care what you eat and how she supports her clients in holistic healing. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. 15 Mar 2023 | An Exploration into Food Rituals and Eating Disorders | 00:17:00
Many of us have food rituals in the way that we shop, prepare, store, cook, present and eat our meals. Mainly, these habits or rituals are likely harmless and can in fact be comforting and beneficial. But sometimes, rituals become compulsive or a way to avoid or hide deeper issues. If you feel compelled to carry out your food rituals, otherwise experiencing high anxiety or distress. Or if you are avoiding social situations and if your diet has become very imbalanced due to rituals - these are signs it could be time to reflect with curiosity and compassion about the function of them. I hope that you enjoy the episode.
14 Feb 2021 | Binge Eating Recovery and Founding FELLA, with Richie Cartwright | 00:47:57
I’m talking to Richie Cartwright, founder of FELLA – an organisation that supports men in overcoming binge eating, through a community-driven digital health platform and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). There remains a lot of stigma around men accessing support for binge eating and Richie’s aim is to break down these barriers through this support. Richie previously suffered from binge eating disorder for six years. His bingeing began whilst he was a student at Cambridge University, although Richie didn’t recognise this as a problem until some years later. He felt that he was living a double life, as appeared confident and self-assured on the outside, when internally he was feeling differently and had struggles with food and body image. Richie talks very openly and shares his journey in binge eating recovery. I hope that you enjoy this episode. He is currently living in Manchester, a city with a large LGBT population.. 09 Sep 2022 | 3 Reflections on Being a Counsellor and a Wounded Healer (Recovered from an Eating Disorder) | 00:17:43
Something a bit different this week - I share some of my reflections of being a counsellor and a wounded healer. I started counselling training at the tender age of 24 years old, with all the youthful idealism and profound naivety of a truly wounder healer. I was emerging from the depths of an eating disorder, with an intense desire to save the world and prevent others from experiencing the pain and distress of my own suffering. I was wading through the shallow waters of my own recovery journey and thankfully, the life debilitating disordered eating symptoms were almost absent. But little did I appreciate how much was still to come. There was a bumpy road ahead in mastering emotional regulation, communication in relationships and developing a robust self-worth, not dependent on the external validation of others.
And of course, the journey is never-ending to this day. Personal development and self-actualisation seem further into the distance, as I appreciate how little I know and how much more there is to learn. I have been reflecting recently on the strengths and weaknesses of bringing my wounded healer experience to the counselling relationship and I am sharing three thoughts on this. I hope that you enjoy the episode. 07 Jan 2023 | Eating Disorder Recovery, Diet Culture, Friendship and Finding Community, with Janice Nierstedt-Keegan | 00:46:57
Today I’m speaking to Janice Niersted–Keegan from Maryland, USA. Janice is a sign language interpreter, is a married mum of two and eating disorder recovery warrior. Janice started her first diet and compulsively exercising when only 11 years old. At 14 years old, her eating continued to be restrictive, and this developed into bulimia from 15 to 21 years. In the episode today, Janice shares about her recovery journey from bulimia, talking us through the combination of individual and group therapy that she experienced; the impact of diet culture and supportive friendship, and then onto how she developed a healthy relationship with movement, focusing more on what her body could do, rather than aesthetics. Today she enjoys trapeze and fully embraces joyful movement! She has also truly found her community and sense of purpose in the world. Janice has been recovered now for many years and in her job as sign language interpreter, her favourite type of interpretation is 12 steps addiction recovery and mental health. She also loves listening to podcasts, learning and reading about eating disorders and in personal growth. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. To get in touch with Janice: -

23 Sep 2023 | Using Positive Psychology as a Tool in Eating Disorder Recovery, with Elle Mace | 00:35:32
Today, I’m talking to Elle Mace – Coach & Mentor, Master Practitioner in Eating disorders, obesity and body dysmorphia; Nutrition and weight management therapist as well as a life and positive psychology coach. Previously, Elle has worked as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor, having a passion for health and fitness. Elle is a returning guest to the Eating Disorder Therapist Podcast and if you’d like to hear about her recovery story, you can listen to her previous episode – link is in the show notes. In the past, Elle struggled with an unhealthy relationship with food and her body, this starting at the tender age of ten years old, when she received unwanted comments about her body. Clearly, this had a huge impact on Elle’s body image and self-esteem, and she began to starve herself, and then understandably fell into binge eating. Then, over several years, she fell into destructive eating disorder cycles impacting her physical and mental wellbeing. Fast forward a few years, and Elle decided that ‘enough was enough’. She had to free herself from the food demons and fall back in love with her body and with herself. It wasn’t an easy journey. It took much strength, determination and self-care – and bravely moving away from the seductions of dieting. I’m pleased to say that today, Elle is in a very different place. She now uses her experience, qualifications and knowledge to help others heal their relationship with food, their bodies and ultimately themselves. She brings much passion and enthusiasm in her work in supporting others, after walking this path herself and knowing that real recovery is possible. In this episode, Elle talks about the use of positive psychology as a tool in eating disorder recovery. She talks affirmations, toxic positivity, body image, the conscious versus the unconscious mind and more. This is an episode to inspire hope and motivation on your healing journey and it will equip you with some practical tools to help you on the way. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. 13 Nov 2021 | 6 Tips to Deal with Relapse in Eating Disorder Recovery | 00:17:53
Relapse is an absolutely normal and inevitable part of recovery. It’s incredibly rare that someone can just stop their eating disorder behaviours, as you have to deal with food every day. Whether this be lapsing back into restrictive eating, binge eating, purging or over-exercising, a relapse can feel pretty stressful and overwhelming. But relapses can be incredibly valuable for gaining insight and awareness about your triggers. Consequently, I like to call relapses – blips or learning experiences. So it’s helpful to embrace relapses and see them as part of the recovery process. Over time, as you move along the recovery road, you will relapse less in frequency and you will recover faster. You are never back to square one. In this episode, I share 6 of my best tips to deal with lapses, and all ones that I have utilised in my own recovery. I hope that you find this helpful.

However, it continues to be used in eating disorder recovery and as a general marker of health, albeit a weight-focused one. In this episode, I explore the history of BMI and its limitations, whilst discussing alternative markers of health.

However, to a 14 year old girl (my lovely daughter) – of course, Mum’s opinions or behaviours are not her prime concern right now. Her friends are dieting and she's bonding with them in doing this. She is finding her own path and separating (as she should be) from me and forging an identity. But, how do I deal with this in a healthy way? How do I stop my own eating disorder history and life experiences from interfering with her journey? How do I stay calm and keep the communication open? Here I share my 3 tips in managing this.

Today, I’m talking to Kristi Koeter. Kristi is a former journalist and personal trainer, marketer, and now author, based in the Austin, Texas, area. Two of Kristi’s three children have had anorexia nervosa, and both completed Partial Hospitalisation Programs in the U.S. Her oldest daughter, now 19, has been stable in her recovery for several years, whilst her youngest, 14 years old, is still early in her recovery. When Kristi’s youngest daughter’s weight started dropping rapidly after she came out of treatment, Kristi knew that she needed to take more proactive action. She also ended up having to take a really hard look at herself; her own eating and body image issues. Using the Maudsley Method, and her daughter’s care team, this has really supported her daughter in transitioning in her recovery. In Kristi’s just-released, co-authored book called Show Your Work: Successful Women Share the Bumpy Roads to Their Biggest Wins, she discusses the realization that in order to help her youngest daughter recover from her eating disorder, she had to address her own years of disordered eating and overexercise. She is also writing Almost Sated on Substack, where she is chronicling her transition to intuitive eating and healthy movement. She knows that it’s possible for parents to help their children even if they are struggling with their own eating issues, but she has felt passionate about working on herself to support this whole process. When Kristi’s not writing, she is mountain biking, hiking, or spending time with my kids and new husband. So Kristi and her daughters are on an incredible journey. Kristi herself has had to do some extraordinarily difficult and challenging work in facing her own demons in this process, which she is doing wholeheartedly. I absolutely commend Kristi for her vulnerability and openness in talking about all of this. In the episode today, Kristi talks about: -

05 Mar 2025 | Making Sense of your Eating Disorder Through Psychological Formulation | 00:23:56
Making sense of your eating disorder through psychological formulation If you’re lost in the jungle of your eating disorder, without a map to guide you safely, you probably feel intense confusion and overwhelm. Why can’t I just eat normally? Why the constant obsessions with food? What is wrong with me? You likely feel terribly alone. To begin to unravel the tangled ed vines that have wrapped themselves tortuously around you, and to shed some awareness and understanding of the complexity of the issue, therapists sometimes use the tool of psychological formulation. Psychological formulation aims to piece together the different parts of the jigsaw, to bring light and clarity. It provides a zoom-out perspective of the eating disorder, as a coping strategy. It peels back the different layers of the psychological onion offering insights and hope around change. In this episode, I explore a psychological formulation and how you can use this as a tool in therapy. I hope that you find it helpful.
