07 Dec 2020Episode 67: Food - Beyond Diet Cultures Perspective 00:27:06

Today Dr. Anderson reflects on how people can expand their perspective of food. Diet culture and eating disorder voice lead people to think of food in limited ways. She discusses how food offers so much more than diet culture and eating disorder-perspective can. She talks about:

  • Ways diet culture narrows our thoughts on food
    • Calculator model
    • Good/Bad food
    • Moralizing eating
  • Without diet culture, we can appreciate so much more about food
    • How food is created, makes its way to our plates
    • What food does in our bodies
    • How food can be pleasurable, meaningful, and emotional
    • Food facilitating connection with others
    • Food passing along family traditions
    • Food as a part of cultural or religious practice
    • Preparing food as enjoyable itself
  • COVID and what’s really important about food
    • Always, but even more so during the pandemic, people experience hunger, food insecurity by no fault of their own
    • Diet culture pressures people to make “good” choices. How does one do that when you can’t access all foods, enough foods, or don’t have food available consistently?
    • Food as part of an act of service
      • Food can be a way we look after our fellow people. If you have the means, support local organizations, people in your community who are struggling right now.

23 Feb 2016Episode 4: How to Tell If You Have an Eating Disorder and What to Do About It00:30:51
Episode 4: How To Tell If You Have an Eating Disorder and What To Do About It In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, #NEDAwareness, we review basic information about eating disorders, resources that are available through NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association), and how to get more info or help. In this episode, we’ll explore: • The different types of eating disorders • Disordered eating • Subtle signs that you might have disordered eating or an eating disorder • How to get help if you have questions or concerns • When exercise becomes unhealthy • How to take the next steps • Empowering yourself through information and treatment If after reading any of this you have concerns, doubts, or questions, talk with a treatment professional immediately. Here’s how to get connected with the help you need: 1. Use NEDA resources. NEDA is the National Eating Disorders Association. Their website, www.nationaleatingdisorders.org, is packed with resources for people who have eating disorders, as well as their friends, families, and other loved ones. NEDA also has a national provider directory, a list of eating disorder specialists including therapists, psychiatrists, dietitians, and treatment centers. One of the coolest things NEDA offers is a FREE, anonymous online eating disorder screening questionnaire. NEDA has a free hotline to call with questions 1-800-931-2237. Cooler still is NEDA’s online live chat feature on their website, in case you’re more of a typer than talker. NEDA staff can answer questions and help steer you in the right direction. 2. Contact your local eating disorder treatment center. Most eating disorder treatment centers offer free consultation/initial appointments/intake sessions. During this time, you’ll meet with a clinician who can provide you with a recommendation on what type of therapy you might need. If you only need once weekly therapy from a therapist in the community, not their center, they will provide you with a referral. 3. Contact a therapist in the community to begin individual therapy. Most therapists in private practice offer free initial consultation appointments much like eating disorder treatment centers do. If the therapist determines that you would benefit from once or twice weekly therapy sessions, called outpatient therapy, you can meet with them. If they think you may need more than once or twice weekly sessions or additional services such as nutrition therapy with a dietitian, they can provide you with a referral as well.
25 Feb 2016Episode 5: All-Or-None Thinking with Dietitian Kate Merkle00:48:11
Episode 5: All-Or-None Thinking with Dietitian Kate Merkle Definition of all-or-none thinking: All-or-none thinking, also called “black and white thinking,” is characterized by the lack of gray, of nuance, and of flexibility of thoughts. Things are divided into absolutes and extremes. Either you’re perfect or you’re terrible. Either you’re kicking ass in recovery or you’ve made no progress. Either you eat healthy foods or you’re on a fast food binge bender. Either you get all A’s in your classes or you’re a failure. Any of this sound familiar? I have a hunch that it does. All-or-none thinking is one of the most common cognitive distortions found in eating disorders. All-or-none thinking by its nature does not allow for flexibility, creativity, or forgiveness. With all-or-none thinking, your eating disorder pigeon holes you into a hopeless conundrum that is near impossible to work your way out of. Instead of dropping the all-or-none thinking, most people align themselves with the more positive or socially desirable side of the polarized options. You may choose to try to get all A’s because, with all-or-none thinking, the only other option is to think of yourself as a failure. All-or-none thinking sets you up for failure by using an impossible standard. No one can be perfect or perform perfectly at all times. All-or-none thinking is a setup because it does not allow for struggle, failure, or any shades of gray which are necessary and unavoidable in recovery. All-or-none thinking causes you to lose sight of what’s important and will encourage you to impulsively toss aside truth and reason. See all-or-nothing thinking for what it is: a trick, a trap that your eating disorder uses to make you give up on recovery and feel awful about yourself.
