Jon my annual Brain Detox Challenge here: https://drleaf.com/pages/brain-detox-challenge#?utm_medium=sms&utm_source=attentive&utm_campaign=Message-01-16-24-10:28

In this podcast I talk about why it is okay if things are not good or happy all the time, and how our “social media” expectations can impact our mental health.

We all know instinctively that things can’t be good all the time. No one’s life is perfect, regardless of what we may see on social media or what we hear or see as we go about our lives.

I think we are all guilty of this—I know I am! Have you ever just looked at someone’s social media post or thought, why isn't this happening in my life? What am I doing wrong? Why do good things like this never happen to me? And, if we continue down this rabbit hole, we can feel worse and worse about our lives, which affects our mental health. It is important to remember that whatever we think about the most grows, and whatever we grow the most into our networks will drive us!

15 Aug 2024Empowering Vs. Enabling Toxic Behavior00:40:21

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I discuss the difference between enabling and empowering someone. Simply put, enabling is doing something challenging for someone else, while empowering someone means helping and supporting them as they complete the challenging task. Think of those school projects you did as a child; enabling is your mom doing the whole project for you, while empowering is your mom helping you do your own school project.

13 Feb 2023Podcast 456: How to Navigate Colliding Boundaries in Relationships: Part 200:26:43

Download my new and improved brain detox app here: https://neurocycle.app

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about what happens when boundaries collide in relationships, and how to navigate tense situations. This is part 1 of a 2 part series. Boundaries are a hot topic these days. Many people post about the importance of boundaries, how to set them and how to respect them, all of which are important. Boundaries help us build stronger relationships with the people in our life. They help us increase our respect for ourselves as we learn how to recognize our own limits and protect our mental health, while acknowledging that other people also have their limits. Once we start setting our own boundaries and respecting other people’s boundaries, we tend to see a huge improvement in our own mental health and in our relationships. The more we set our own boundaries, the more we learn to understand and respect the boundaries of the people in our lives.

As Josh notes, he could not use external things to medicate things deep within himself.

02 May 2024The scandalous but genius Mother of the Mind-Body Revolution01:19:01

In this podcast I interview bestselling author and journalist Pamela Ryckman about her new book, Candace Pert: Genius, Greed, and Madness in the World of Science, Pamela talks about the life and career of one of the leading researchers of the mind, brain and body connection, the renowned neuropharmacologist Candace Pert. As Pamela notes, she played pivotal roles in major movements in both science and politics.

Unfortunately, she was sabotaged by mentors and colleagues keen to profit from her brilliance. But, as Pamela discusses in her book, Candace also became tainted, “believing that her noble ends would justify devious means.”

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk to Alicia, a concerned mother, about helping sensitive children manage their emotions. This is part of a series I am doing on questions you submitted for my new book on children’s mental health.

This was Alicia’s question:

“How do I help a sensitive seven-year-old move on after they make a mistake? I have a very sensitive seven year old girl. She likes to follow the rules. However, she does from time to time need some course correction. When I do so, she instantly withdraws, and becomes very quiet and sad, often for a long amount of time. I have a hunch that she’s beating herself up about whatever mistake she made, and I would love some help figuring out how to help her receive correction without being so hard on herself.”

SueEllen Mancini knew something was wrong. She began dealing with mental health issues as early as age 14, and, by her 20’s things were just getting worse, So she sought help, amid a culture where discussing mental health issues in the open remained uncommon. 19 Aug 2020How to unsubscribe from toxic thinking with Harvard-trained psychologist Dr. Sasha Heinz00:45:20

2020 has definitely been one for the books, and it isn’t even over yet. Amid a global pandemic, so much is uncertain and unknown. What will the future look like? What will tomorrow look like? What will the world be like after all of this is over? It is not surprising that so many people are struggling with anxiety, grief, depression, anger and loneliness—we have all experienced low moments over the past few months. Thankfully, there is a way we can calm the mental chaos we are experiencing and take back control. In this week’s podcast and blog, I speak with Harvard-trained psychologist and health coach Dr. Sasha Heinz about why we struggle to get a handle on our anxiety, how to go from knowing what to do to doing it, how we can unsubscribe from our thoughts, how to handle pandemic fears and frustrations and what we can do now to create our own future, even when facing the unknown.

+Pre-order before August 8 to get access to bonus content!

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about the importance of teaching your child about boundaries. This is part 2 of my series on parenting, boundaries, and mental health. Part one can be found here.

Whenever you, as a parent or caregiver, set a boundary, make sure that you always explain why in a way that your child will understand. Use the moment to model healthy boundaries for your child and teach them what a healthy boundary looks like, using language that encourages your child to think about the situation and what it means. Avoid using language that shuts them down such as saying “because I said so”, which will make the boundary feel more like a punishment than a teaching opportunity.

Pre-order my new book HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD CLEAN UP THEIR MENTAL MESS here: https://www.mentallyresilientkids.com/

+Pre-order before August 8 to get access to bonus content!

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about embracing “messy” parenting. We all know that parenting is hard. As parents, we will make mistakes. We are only human, after all! As parents and guardians, it is important that we give ourselves permission to be what I call “messy”. This means embracing our feelings and mistakes and learning from them, using them to grow and learn as parents. It means using our own struggles to help our children understand how to manage the “messiness” and challenges of life through example and open communication. Indeed, one of the best ways we can teach our children how to manage their mental health is by modeling how we deal with life’s difficulties, including how we parent them and how we embrace, process and manage our own mistakes.

+Pre-order before August 8 to get access to bonus content!

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk to Oyindamola, a concerned parent, about her preschooler’s emotional reactions and how to help him manage how he feels in the moment. This is part of a series I am doing on questions you submitted for my new book on children’s mental health.

This was Oyindamola’s question:

“Why does my preschooler (4 years and 5 months) tend to cry at a range of issues which seem understandable e.g. stubbing his toe or spilling a meal to others less so such as, his nanny leaving before he could say bye, water touching his face during a shower (despite the fact this is part of the process every morning)? It could be said that these examples have in common a perceived lack of agency but they seem to vary in magnitude quite a lot. We try various things: listening to the issue in his own words, asking him to take deep breaths, acknowledging his feelings, and asking him to proffer solutions but sometimes it just doesn't seem to work.”

06 Feb 2023Podcast 454: What to do when boundaries collide in relationships00:26:41

Show Description:

Human mental health is infinitely complex. We all battle in different ways, we all struggle, and we all need to learn how to cope, process, feel and experience life’s ups and downs. The fundamental way we do this is by listening to the signals our brain and body send us, like anxiety and depression, and getting to the root of what these mental and physical symptoms are telling us about the imbalance in our life.

In this podcast I speak with holistic board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist and yoga teacher Dr. Ellen Vora about how it is possible to learn to understand and manage our mental health by embracing these signals and listening to what they have to say, how facing the root of our fears and anxiety helps us find true healing, what a functional medicine approach to mental health looks like, why the current system of mental healthcare needs to change, the relationship between psychotropic medication, withdrawal and mental health, and more!

22 Jul 2024Moving Though Regret00:25:12

In this podcast I talk about how uncontrolled regret can affect us mentally and physically, and what we can do to learn how to manage our regrets and make them work for us and not against us. This is a replay of a Neurolive webinar I did on my app. For the full webinar AD-free, please see Neurocycle.app or look for Neurocycle on the App Store or Google Play.

Unmanaged regret can make us feel like we are truly wading through a swamp with no end in sight. It is one of those emotions that is so crippling that it can be hard to get through the day, let alone move forward or heal. It is so easy to feel like we are drowning in our “darkest moments”.

28 Mar 20245 second strategy to change your life01:18:22

In this podcast I talk to bestselling author and top podcast host Mel Robbins about her book The High 5 Habit, the brain-mind-body connection, building self-confidence, and so much more! The high 5 habit is a simple yet profound tool that can change your attitude, your mindset, and behavior. It can help you dig yourself out of a mental hole when you are feeling down or depressed. All you have to do, when standing in front of a mirror in the morning, is give your reflection a high 5, no matter how you feel in the moment. Instead of berating your reflection, or turning away from it, this little action helps shift your mind in a different direction. It helps break apart decides of subconscious programming and helps your brain create new programming that helps your brain change how you see yourself and what you are capable of.

27 Jun 2024Confronting the “good girl” trap with Elise Loehnen00:55:51

In this podcast I talk to bestselling author and podcast host Elise Loehnen about being a woman in today’s world, the price we as women pay to be “good” and “on our best behavior”, how this impacts our mental wellbeing, and so much more!

Sponsors helping make this podcast possible:

-Apollo Neuro: To get $50 off your device, just go to apolloneuro.com/drleaf.

Elise is also the author of the New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good. This incredible book “weaves together history, memoir, and cultural criticism to explore the ways patriarchy lands in the bodies of women and embeds itself in our consciousness—and what we then police in ourselves and in each other”.  It is about the way we as women are programmed by culture and society to adhere to certain ideas about “goodness”. in many ways, women, from young are programmed to be on their best behavior, while men are programmed to be powerful, which affects all parts of a woman’s life.
