09 Aug 2022#23 A Conversation with Sarah Miller from Azul Unlimited01:17:27
The guys finally sit down with Sarah Miller from Azul Unlimited.  Nick, being the social butterfly, found her on social media and has been following her for some time.  He also used her suggestions and advice mentioned in one of her videos on how to create a scuba diving resume. They discuss her mobile living conditions near a flowing body of water, as well as the topic of her latest video that she had posted at the time of our reaching out to her; her decision to stop instructing.  Even those who aren't scuba instructors know how difficult it can be to obtain that certification, so stepping away from it is not a lightly made decision and she breaks down her reasoning for her choice. If you want to reach out to Sarah or follow her on the social medias, you can reach her through the following channels: Instagram @Azul.Unlimited http://www.youtube.com/c/azulunlimited.com The Dive Table www.thedivetable.com Fish Dive Surf, Inc. www.fishdivesurf.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-porter73/message If you enjoyed this episode and want to be a part of this growing community, you can join us in a couple of ways: Subscribe to the podcast so you get notified when new episodes drop; Leave a rating wherever you listen to your podcasts; Send the link to the show; thedivetable.com to a dive buddy, your dive team, or your last scuba instructor. 21 Mar 2023‘What Are The Conditions for Effective Training?’ With Sarah Miller | S2E201:01:31
From examples of potty-training to less than glamorous beach exits after a scuba dive, Sarah and Jay discuss what they feel is a solid foundation for effective training (and not just in scuba) and what the result of that effective training should look like. 10 May 2022#13 What's the Deal with Dive Buddies?01:09:45

First of all, we would like to apologize for the audio quality in this one.  Daniel the producer (That guy's on thin ice!) was attempting to create a better quality sound but in the process generated what can only be described as, well, crap.  So there's that.

In this episode, the guys discuss what some scuba divers may call, 'The Great Equalizer.'  Yes we know, it's water that is normally known as the great equalizer, but when it comes to being paired with a diver of unknown origination, you just might get the one from, 'H-E-Double-Hockey Sticks!'

From your open water class to a dive boat in the Caribbean, you have been paired with an insta-buddy more times than you'd like.  So have a seat at The Dive Table while your therapists Nick and Jay help you relive some not so great to possibly horrific traumatic events of having to watch or be watched by, DUN-DUN-DUNNNNNNN...The Dive Buddy.

12 Apr 2022Am I a Good Diver? | S1E901:06:10

Nick and Jay discuss what it means to be a good diver and quickly realize that it's easier to determine what metrics don't automatically make you a good diver. Years of experience, a diver's rating and the cost of their equipment are easily dispelled by the guys as ways to qualify someone as a "good diver." What qualities do you think it takes to be a good diver and have you ever overestimated or underestimated a diver and judged a "book" by it's cover?

12 Oct 2022Humans of Scuba (HoS) - Xiangfei Kong01:04:21

We are excited to bring you, 'Humans of Scuba,' a new series within The Dive Table Podcast.

Some of you may be familiar with the concept and we thought it would be perfect for the scuba realm. Pulling the random scuba diver out of the water, sitting them down at the Dive Table and discussing what makes them tick in their own world and how scuba plays a part in that.

The boys decided to start the series off with our good friend, Xiangfei Kong.  Xiangfei has come a long way in a short period of time and has become just as passionate about scuba as Nick and Jay.

The guys get Xiangfei to open up about where he grew up, his aversion to cold weather, what his go to food is after a long day of diving and the story behind the nickname, 'Kankles Kong.’ Not to mention his opinions on Chihuahua’s. Woof.

In an episode we recorded prior to Nick leaving for Malaysia, the guys discussed the pro's and con's to buying new or used scuba gear.  From BCD's and wings, to wetsuits and snorkels, Nick and Jay discuss the sometimes materialistic views they have of wanting new out of the box versus being unconcerned about urine or blood stains. 17 Oct 2023Designing Scuba Training for Adults with Ben Bos | S2E1801:17:25

Jay sits down with the Training Director of United Team Diving (UTD) Ben Bos to discuss the designing of scuba training for adults and designing a scuba training curriculum that revolves around what divers really need and not what they think they need.  Ben has been a professional diver for 24 years and self-admittedly in a previous life was in marketing and sold everything from, "sofas, stereos, cars, copy machines, coffee and paper and everything in between...everything except houses and boats."

Ben was only 12 years old when he started diving and more than 30 years later, diving is a way of life.  He has worked all over the world as a scuba diver including running a dive center for over 12 years.  He is currently the Training Director for one of the world's most progressive Scuba Organizations, ‘United Team Diving, ‘(UTD).

Ben has not only made diving his passion, but also his living and has contributed to some of the industry's most groundbreaking innovations. The re-development and evolution of Ratio Deco into Ratio Deco 3.0 as well as the DIR compatible side mount configurations are but two examples.

Ben is happiest when he is exploring unknown places deep in a Chinese jungle, abandoned mines or inside old shipwrecks.  The thrill of teaching both novice and experienced divers is what drives him to never stop learning and expanding his own knowledge.

27 Sep 2022#30 Mike Gault on The Texas Underwater Survey Project (TexUS)01:01:31

We are happy to bring Mike Gault back to The Table to discuss his current project, The Texas Underwater Survey, or TexUS.  If you haven't listened to his two part episode (Ep. 16 & 17), go ahead and do that now.  We'll wait...

Welcome back!

As you heard in Mike's two part episode, he has been involved in quite a few projects, including the Good Enough Springs Project along with his good friend, Chuck Noe, who you heard on episode #29.  Today Mike is discussing his other current project, TexUS.   This has been an idea of Mike's almost since the beginning of his diving career.  To be able to collect, manage and display the underwater features and items found in the waters of Texas and to have that information available for anybody to access online.  A daunting task, no doubt, but many of the divers he's spoken with regarding this project are more motivated to go diving when they have a specific purpose to their dive.  Well here it is!

The discussions with Mike regarding TexUS will be a quarterly conversation on The Dive Table, so we hope you stay tuned to find out more. If you'd like to get involved with the project yourself, there's a few ways you can do that. You can contact Mike directly at CTXscuba.com. You can also reach out to us here at The Table on our website listed below.

Finally we here at The Dive Table would like to congratulate Mike on his new appointment as Director of The Good Enough Springs Project.  We know he's been very involved with that work over the years and it is well deserved.  Congratulations!

21 Sep 2022#29 A Conversation with Chuck Noe01:25:29

The guys sit down with renowned cave diver and explorer, Chuck Noe.  Chuck started diving in 1980, received his cave certification in 1996, became a tri-mix instructor in 1997, served as the lead divemaster on trips out to the Flower Gardens in the 90's, founded Gulf Tech Scuba, was a member of the famed WKPP and is a founding member and one time director of the Good Enough Springs Exploration Project, and the list goes on...

Needless to say, if Chuck had actually put his mind to it, he might have actually accomplished something.

This is a great episode with amazing stories that made my hands sweat, so sit back and enjoy.

17 Jul 2024Debunking Shark "Facts" | S3E1400:44:04

Sharks have a bad reputation, mostly due to sensationalism and fear, however, they are important for the environment and play a vital role as apex predators.

Shark attacks are rare, with the odds of being bitten or killed by a shark being extremely low and in fact, you're more likely to be struck by lightning.  We think it goes without saying, but Humans are the biggest threat to sharks through overfishing, fear-based killings, by-catch and of course being only partially used for shark fin soup.

Sensationalized media, like Shark Week, perpetuates negative stereotypes about sharks, but social media influencers and conservationists are working hard to show the real side of sharks and their importance to the ecosystem.

In this conversation, Sarah and Jay discuss common myths and misconceptions about sharks. They debunk the idea that all sharks are big and have sharp teeth, emphasizing the diversity of shark species and their different tooth structures. They also address the misconception that sharks are man-eaters, highlighting that most sharks eat fish or invertebrates.

19 Apr 2022Going Solo | S1E1001:01:26

The guys discuss the pro's and con's of diving solo. Also the contradictions that some agencies put forth in their programs regarding dive buddie's vs. going at it alone and why Nick and Jay both appreciate the preparation that goes into what it takes to be safe.

What are your thoughts on diving alone?  Do you enjoy it?  Are you properly prepared with redundant equipment to be the safest you can be?

18 May 2022#14 Desert Island Dives - 6 Diving Destinations - Part I01:01:35

In this episode, Nick and Jay each reveal 3 dive locations they would like to dive...or dive again.  From Florida to The Far East and locations in between, the dive sites that have made their mark on their hearts, minds and senses of wonder and wander are discussed.  So excited were they to talk about scuba diving in distant lands, they needed to have a Part II, so stay tuned for that.

Producer Daniel's Note:

There is a slight audio interference in this episode and it is something we are working to correct.  As we try different approaches to recording with new locations and software and equipment, unforeseen circumstances arise, but we are doing our best to prevent them and correct them when they happen.

02 May 2023Diving Wet and Dry with Jack Der of DUI S2E701:36:28
Older than time itself (or at least older than the SPG v. Transmitter debate), the question of diving wet or dry has been around for a few minutes. While they both have an overlap regarding application, they also have very specific characteristics that make each of them unique for specific types of diving. As Jack is an employee of DUI, you can imagine where his passion lies, however as a diver that wants to continue to learn, he's very aware of how each type of thermal protection plays a part in scuba diving as a whole. 11 Apr 2023‘How to Build Relationships Through Scuba Diving’ with Jack Der | S2E501:09:00
Jack Der of DUI is our guest co-host for our 5th episode of the season. Jay and Jack discuss the traditional and not so traditional ways any type of relationship can blossom through scuba diving. Through the "everyday" diving that you might partake in at your local watering hole, to the familiar faces you might see on a charter boat thousands of miles away from your home. While there might be some 3 to 4 million scuba divers in the country, it can feel quite a bit smaller when you see the same friendly (and not so friendly) faces. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-porter73/message
30 Apr 2024The Dive Table Presents: Surface Interval #3 - A Day In The Life with Jay & Sarah in San Diego, CA.00:11:55

In today's short Surface Interval episode, Jay and Sarah share a few minutes of their day as they enjoyed a shore dive at La Jolla Shores in San Diego, CA.

Recorded after their meet and greet at La Jolla Shores, they were able to enjoy a shallow dive together off the coast and experience what that location has to offer.  According to Sarah, it has improved greatly from her last visit so if you have the chance to go "play" with some sea lions, that's the location to do it.

Shout out to Exos Dive in San Marcos, CA for keeping Jay aired up.

23 Aug 2022#25 Jay's Journey01:35:52

As the anniversary of Jay's open water certification approaches, he and Nick discuss the path that led him to where he is in the scubaverse.  They discuss the choices he made willingly and which ones he decided to avoid.

After he had a number of PADI courses under his weight belt, (including a Drift Diver Cert that he doesn't like to talk about too much), he decided to search for alternate methods of learning and teaching and quickly found UTD.

There is no real "ending" to ones scuba journey, but there is a beginning and in this case, it was quite the bumpy ride with a number of unmet expectations and disappointing outcomes.

We've all seen things that we wanted to pick up while scuba diving. Most of it was trash and we picked it up (I hope!) in order to remove it from the ecosystem, (Personally, I have left a piece or two of trash because I was confident that something was using it for a dwelling, but I digress), but when does "trash" or a seemingly random item become something more? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-porter73/message
22 Jul 2024The Dive Table Presents: 'Diversity Below the Waves: The Humans of Scuba'00:01:41

We here at the dive table are excited to announce our new diversity in diving series.

If you've been involved with the scuba diving community in any capacity, you have probably noticed a lack of diversity. Although this is changing as younger people get into the sport with the help of social media, the general diving population consists of white, middle -aged, straight men. And while we love all the people who keep this sport alive, here at the dive table, we want everyone to feel represented in the sport. So we're creating this series to talk about the different challenges people face.

Our purpose is to raise our collective consciousness around diversity and diving and be a part of the continuing evolution of the sport we are all so passionate about. We recognize fully that this topic may be controversial for some. We hope that you'll stick around and learn with us on this journey as we step into other people's shoes. These conversations are important to have out loud and in the open so we can grow together.

Throughout the rest of this season, we will be sprinkling in episodes from this series, including the topics of culture, race, sexual identity, and gender. Be sure to subscribe to get the latest episode and join the conversation in our Facebook group. That's Facebook.com forward slash groups forward slash the dive table.

20 Jul 2022The Dive Table will be back after a word from our sponsors...00:01:44

Hey everybody,

Producer Daniel here with The Dive Table

Jay and Nick are gonna take a few weeks off in order to recoup from life outside of podcast responsibilities.

Jay has been out of town with family obligations but at the same time going through quite a bit of training towards his instructor rating with UTD, so I can imagine the combination would warrant a little time off…

And Nick, in case you haven’t heard, is moving to Malaysia.  I think it takes two weeks just to get there, so the time off will allow him to get settled into his new place, his dream job and not to mention the time zone…I think it’s 13 hours ahead…

We will release a new episode on August 2nd where the guys have a conversation with Sarah Miller with Azul Unlimited.  She took the time to sit down with The Dive Table to discuss what’s going on in her part of the world as well as views on the scuba industry itself and something about certain mobile living conditions in the vicinity of a flowing body of water.

You should definitely check her out on Instagram and YouTube in the meantime, just search, Azul Unlimited.

Thanks to everyone that is subscribed and listening as well as our Patreon members.  If you want to be a supporting member of The Dive Table, please go to www.thedivetable.com and click on ‘Join a Dive Club’ in the upper right hand corner and pick a club that best suits you.

16 Aug 2022#24 Transmitter vs. SPG01:20:06

The age old question finally arrives at The Dive Table; Which tool should you use to monitor your gas levels, the transmitter or the SPG?

Well, the guys dive right in and quickly realize something that everybody already knows;  never buy a used mattress.

The pros and cons of a transmitter and SPG are discussed as well as the preferences for different types of diving.  The answer to the question may surprise you.  Or it won't.

What side of the aisle do you fall on?  Do you think it matters which one should be used?  Do you agree or disagree with Nick and Jay's assessment?

Money.  Is it the root of all evil, or the gateway to a scuba life?

Nick and Jay discuss what it might cost today to start your scuba journey.  They give a sneak peak into what they've each spent on scuba and discuss that while it might be "a lot" of money (perspective is needed in this episode), it's what they love to do so therefore justified.  Nick and Jay also discuss ways to save money between the type of equipment you can buy to learning how to maintain your own gear.

23 Jul 2024The Dive Table Presents: Surface Interval #6 with Jay Gardner: Zigging and Zagging as an Independent Scuba Instructor00:34:31

Being an independent scuba instructor involves managing various aspects of running a small business, serving students, and handling logistics. This includes finding students, defining the target audience, and understanding their needs. It also involves managing the logistics of teaching classes, such as gas fills, dive sites, rentals, and pool access. Building a support system is crucial, including service, retail sales, and knowledge resources. The closure of local dive shops can present challenges, requiring improvisation and finding alternative solutions. Jay shares his experience and invites other independent instructors to share their stories and insights.
