11 Oct 2021My top tips to ‘clean’ up your diet!00:15:48

The idea that your diet needs a ‘clean up’doesn’t need to mean that you precisely adhere to a perfect diet of ‘clean’ foods and eliminate food groups left, right and centre. There’s no need for this kind of dietary approach.

Rather than following the latest clean eaters on Instagram (many of whom have their nutrition knowledge a little confused), In this episode I’m going to share with you my top tips for establishing small healthy habits in your diet this spring.

02 Mar 2021Smart Snacking Strategies00:18:57

There are no wrong or right ways to eat. There are simply overarching principles that if applied to an individual’s diet consistently, the individual increases their chance of good health. Snacking is a common area where people try to stick to different rules and regulations only to struggle with it, rather than giving themselves the flexibility to listen to their body or change based on what their day brings.

My advice is always that you need to find what works for you and that can look a number of different ways.

17 Feb 2021How to Maximise Your Diet Quality00:16:17

Due to the way nutrition has been portrayed in the media, it’s easy to assume that health is all about what you shouldn’t be eating.

Common messages we hear every day are: No sugar. No soft drink. No chocolate. No gluten. No dairy. No carbs. No junk food. No preservatives. No meat.

Just to clarify, none of these rules are actually necessary, although many people live their lives believing they are. (Unless of course, you’re a celiac or have an allergy, then please continue to avoid the foods that you need to.

I don’t like doing nutrition based on rules! I like doing nutrition based on choice. Choice that’s informed by good education and includes all part of our humanity: social, cultural and psychological and physical.

20 Dec 2021Healthier Christmas Party Food: Part 200:16:03

“Please leave the nutritionist at home” is a common sentiment of my family whenever there’s a party involved.

I mean, come on, let’s not ruin a good party by being too healthy.

It’s a common social idea that healthy and fun can’t go together in the same sentence. We say things like “Let’s be evil and eat cheesecake” and “I was naughty last night and drank lots of wine”. Party, fun, alcohol, sugar. Party, fun, water, vegetables. Hmmmm….

It’s also becoming more common, however, that people are so obsessed with healthy eating that God forbid a piece of cake pass through their lips.

They scrutinise every nutrition information panel for sugar and even truly healthy foods get removed from the diet for fear that their consumption might end in peril.

So how do we strike a healthy balance for healthy eating at Christmas time? In this two-part episode series, I’m chatting through a bunch of delicious and nutritious Christmas party food ideas so you can have fun and nourish your body at the same time!

02 Aug 2021Can Your Diet Protect You Against COVID19? Part 200:17:02

There’s no doubt that this virus is causing mass fear, stress and disruption to our daily lives. Not to mention controversy. As someone who’s been fortunate enough to be amongst the world population to not have contracted COVID19, I’m keen to keep it that way and very grateful to be fully vaccinated.

Unfortunately, whenever there is fear, you can bet that there will be individuals exploiting that fear! There have been several dodgy products and questionable pieces of advice pop up over the past 18 months claiming that it can protect you from COVID19. Many of them fined by the Australian Government!

But what about diet? With COVID19 wrecking its havoc across the world for nearly 2 years, is there research about diet and its ability to protect us?

Let’s check it out!

Maximising your gut health is all the rage right now in the wellness world. And for good reason. The health of the gut flows on to affect the health of other parts of the body. A big part of gut health is a varied and thriving gut microbiota –the live bacteria in your large intestine.

In this episode I chat to senior pharmacist Karen Campbell from the Capital Chemist on choosing a probiotic supplement based on the different strains and types available and how to find the right one for you.

27 May 2021Lessons from a Vegan Diet00:16:45

For many vegans, the choice to completely eliminate animal products has less to do with health and more to do with strong ethical convictions about the treatment and use of animals. Not to mention the effect that our current food system has on our environment.

In modern day cultures. food has become much more than a source of nourishment. For many people it can be about making a statement of who they are, what they stand for and a reflection of their overall belief system.

Here at The Hub, we believe that regardless of your ethical convictions, religion or belief system, that healthy eating applies to you. Whether you choose to become vegan, vegetarian or an omnivore, with smart planning and perhaps a little bit of help from an experienced professional, your diet can also help improve your overall health and well-being whilst still reflecting who you are and what you believe.

Research does indicate that well planned vegan diets do offer a range of health benefits. There’s a lot we can learn from a good vegan diet.
