30 Aug 2021Alter Egos Are Tools for Mental Toughness with Todd Herman01:19:22

Todd Herman is a high-performance coach and is the best-selling author of the book The Alter Ego Effect: The Power of Secret Identities to Transform Your Life. Over the past 20 years, Todd has worked with celebrities and professional athletes, of whom the majority of his clients are kept secret. In his book, Todd teaches us how alter egos work, how we create them in different aspects of our lives, and how to activate them to help us become the most effective businessmen, the most intentional husbands, and the most patient and present fathers. Alter egos help us find the real version of what we are capable of. This is due to the fact that you no longer care about people judging you for who you are. One thing Todd mentions is that there's only one person keeping you from your full potential and that's YOU

According to Todd, the way to bypass fear, doubt, and limiting beliefs is through creating heroic alter egos. Todd's biggest aspect of coaching is mental toughness. He tells us the true definition of mental toughness which is, "Mental toughness is your ability to be flexible and adaptable despite what your circumstances are giving you right now."

08 Jan 20245 Traits of a Healthy Family with Dr. Gary Chapman00:41:22

Gary Chapman, Ph.D. is an author, speaker, and counselor. He has a passion for people, and for helping them form lasting relationships. The 5 Love Languages® is one of Chapman’s most popular titles, topping various bestseller charts for years, selling over twenty million copies and has been on the New York Times bestsellers list since 2007.

In this episode of Dad Edge, Dr. Gary Chapman discusses his new book on the five traits of a healthy family. He shares that many people struggle with understanding what a good family looks like, especially if they come from a dysfunctional background. Dr. Chapman wrote the book to provide guiding principles for those who are unsure or struggling with creating a healthy family dynamic.

Dr. Gary Chapman emphasizes that the attitude of service is crucial for building a healthy family. He acknowledges that humans are naturally self-centered, but in order to have a healthy family, individuals must adopt an attitude of service. This means approaching relationships and family life with a mindset of wanting to help each family member reach their potential for good in the world.

He also emphasizes that while individuals may not have control over their emotions, they can choose their attitude. This means that even when negative feelings arise, such as anger or hurt, individuals can still choose to think in terms of how they can enrich the lives of their family members. By choosing an attitude of love, individuals can respond to their family members in a positive and loving way, even when their emotions might be telling them otherwise.

29 Apr 2021Inheritance is Temporary, Legacy is Forever with John Ramstead01:18:41

John Ramstead

John Ramstead is a husband, father, entrepreneur, and author of On Purpose, With Purpose. Ramstead knew from a young age that he wanted to be a pilot. However, when he got to college and was enrolled in the ROTC program, he never believed that he had what it took to be a pilot. After an inspiring talk with his father, John decided that he was going to take aviation classes and become a pilot. Throughout his studies, John had a mentor that held him accountable and challenged him to be the best that he could be. Ramstead finished first in his graduating class and got to pick the plane of his choice.

After John retired from the Navy, he became an entrepreneur and founded the company Beyond Influence. In 2011, John encountered an accident that would alter the course of his life forever. During a work retreat, John was riding on a horse that bucked him off and sent him straight into a steel pipe, shattering his skull. The doctors told his wife and kids to fill out a living will because he was not going to make it. During his time in the hospital, the Lord spoke to John and told him that he would heal him. From that moment on, John decided to save the relationship with his wife and children and become the husband and father he was meant to be.

Marriage is all about skill. You can't just walk in and expect to wing it on the first try; it takes patience, practice, and most importantly - SKILL. Having a healthy relationship with your kids works the same way too. It's not about getting them to be on their best behavior, it's about bringing out the best in them, no matter if it's different than how you imagined. When John was near the end of his life, he discovered that it's not about what you leave for your family, it's about what you leave in them. That is the difference between inheritance and legacy - legacy is forever, inheritance is temporary.

14 Aug 2023Building Resilient Families, Being a Spiritual Leader, and Leading from the Front with Sean Patrick Flanery01:31:20

Sean Patrick Flanery is an American actor, author, and martial arts practitioner. He has embraced transformative roles that have deepened his faith and allowed him to connect with his audience on a profound level. His broad achievements and credentials as an actor and entrepreneur are a testament to his dedication, hard work, and commitment to personal growth.

In this episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, Larry Hagner and Sean Patrick Flanery discuss their childhoods and the impact their parents had on their lives. They talk about the importance of having a supportive family and how it can shape a person's work ethic. Despite not having a lot growing up, Sean Patrick Flanery emphasizes that he never wanted for anything and had all the necessary tools to navigate life successfully. They also touch on the significance of attending sporting events and the role it played in their upbringing.

Wrestling is a sport that goes beyond physical strength and technique. It builds resilience and grit in individuals, teaching them valuable life lessons that can be applied both on and off the mat. Sean Patrick Flanery emphasizes that wrestling is not just another sport like tennis or basketball. It involves hand-to-hand combat, where a wrestler is pitted against another individual of the same size, weight, and age. The primal nature of wrestling creates a real-world application, where a wrestler realizes that they can be bested by someone their own age. This realization instills a sense of humility and a desire to improve.

Wrestling teaches individuals to make quick decisions and remain calm in chaotic situations. It instills resilience and grit, qualities that are essential for success in any aspect of life. The ability to think on your feet and maintain composure in high-pressure situations is a valuable skill that wrestlers develop through their training and competition.

As we wrap up this episode, remember that embracing failure is a vital part of personal development. Today, we delved into the significance of obstacles and setbacks in propelling us towards our goals, reminding us to continually strive for self-improvement. Consider adversity as a daily supplement, integral to growth and advancement. This wisdom holds particularly true in wrestling, where wins and losses are an inseparable part of the journey. Carry these insights with you as you forge your path forward.

15 Oct 2021How to Handle Change with Nick Brown01:02:01

Nick Brown is a father, business owner, and member of the Dad Edge Alliance Accelerator Mastermind. Growing up in Mississippi, Nick felt held back and wanted to pursue a life outside his home state. Nick left Mississippi, moved to New England, and joined the Coast Guard. Nick eventually became interested in becoming a lawyer and went to law school. After Nick felt his passion wasn't in practicing law full time, he started investing in real estate deals on the side. Nick Brown is now a real estate investor with over 12 multi-family units to his name while keeping up his law credentials on the side.

Today, we are going to be talking about embracing change and transitions in our lives. Change is one of those things that will be there no matter what. However, how we deal with change in our lives is what defines us. We as humans love consistency and are comfortable staying where we are. However, it's in those transitions that we grow outside of our comfort zone and gain valuable life experiences that we wouldn't have gotten had we not changed at all.

Let's face it, men. There's a silent struggle many of us face, one that eats away at our relationships, our self-respect, and our ability to be present fathers and husbands: porn addiction.

Yeadon Smith is a husband, father of four redheads, apartment buyer, mentor at My First Million In Multifamily, co-host of the "Porn to Purpose" podcast , and the Co-Founder of Live Oak Capital, a commercial real estate investment firm focusing on multifamily apartment properties, offering investment opportunities to private investors.

Become the best husband and leader you can: www.thedadedge.com/mastermind

Today, he steps into the light to share his raw and powerful journey of breaking free. This isn't a lecture; it's a real conversation with a guy who's been in the trenches and found his way out.

Yeadon doesn't sugarcoat the awkward moments or the serious consequences of this addiction. He shares the triggers, the lies we tell ourselves, and the practical steps he took to reclaim his life after over 700 days of recovery.

In this episode, you'll gain insight into:

  • The insidious ways porn addiction takes root and escalates.

  • The devastating impact it has on intimacy and trust in marriage.

  • Concrete tools and strategies Yeadon implemented for lasting freedom.

  • How to confront the shame and start the journey toward healing.

  • The profound positive changes that recovery brings to fatherhood and manhood.

Consider these realities:

  • Neurological studies indicate that the reward pathways in the brain respond to pornography in ways similar to addictive substances.

  • Relationship research consistently shows a strong negative correlation between pornography use and marital satisfaction.

  • Personal accounts within recovery communities highlight the significant improvements in self-esteem and overall well-being after breaking free from porn addiction.

If you're wrestling with this or care about someone who is, this episode offers a message of hope and a tangible path toward lasting freedom.

26 Jan 2024Creating Depth and Intimacy with your Spouse Again with Brad Rhoads00:52:36

Brad Rhoads founded Grace Marriage in 2015 to help churches and couples prioritize marriage. Prior to this, Brad was a practicing attorney for 22 years. He served as a marriage pastor at their local church, where he noted the nationwide absence of an intentional, ongoing strategy to keep couples on a trajectory of growth.

In this episode, Brad Rhoads shares his personal journey of feeling pressure to perform in his Christian life. He talks about how a friend helped him understand the concept of relying on the grace of God instead of his own efforts. Brad Rhoads explains the freedom he experienced when he realized that it's okay to not be perfect and that he could enjoy life without the heavy burden of constantly striving. He also discusses how this mindset shift improved his relationships and allowed him to embrace imperfection.

One of the key factors that they emphasized is the importance of prioritizing quality time in marriage. The busyness of life often takes a toll on couples, causing them to go through the motions and lose sight of what truly matters. With kids' activities, work demands, and financial pressures, it becomes easy to neglect the relationship and settle for a mediocre marriage.

Many couples desire a better marriage, but they lack the knowledge and guidance on how to achieve it. They may have tried attending conferences or seeking advice, but nothing seems to bring about lasting change. As a result, they resign themselves to the status quo, accepting that their marriage is simply tolerable.

However, Brad and Larry argue that there is hope for a better marriage. The answer is not as difficult as it may seem, but many couples have not been given the tools or coaching to break free from their stagnant situation. The key is to find the answer and receive the necessary guidance to have a fulfilling and joyful marriage with one's best friend.

Through their harrowing experience of losing a child, JC Batista and his wife have confronted their grief together, offering unwavering support to each other and their family. 04 Apr 2022Gut Punch Moments with Lee Baucom01:10:29
In marriage, one of the hardest things is having these gut punch moments where our partner tells us something we aren’t ready for, that can even bring us to question every single thing about the relationship. My guest today helps couples overcome those challenges.

Lee Baucom, Ph.D. is a 22 year veteran of marriage therapy. His training has been in marriage and family therapy, earning two Master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in the area. He has also completed specialty training in Community Building, as well as in Personal and Life Coaching.

Lee is an experienced facilitator of health and healing for individuals, couples, families, and organizations. This experience has given Lee a different perspective on why couples have problems, and what the solutions are for these problems.

From the beginning, Lee was committed to making relationships work. It is his contention that most relationships are salvageable, and that many take the “easy way out,” rather than finding a workable solution that preserves the relationship, leaving the relationship healthy and individuals happy.

Lee has been happily married for 22 years, and has two children. Lee is devoted to his family, and sees that as inspiration for his own work with families trying to find health.

In addition to family time, in his off-hours, Lee enjoys trail running, mountain biking, and scuba diving. He also pursues flyfishing and is an avid reader with a great deal of curiosity about a number of diverse fields.

03 May 2021Everything is Gonna Be Alright, Alright, Alright with Matthew McConaughey00:53:17

Matthew McConaughey

Alright, alright, alright is the famous phrase coined by the illustrious Matthew McConaughey. He is an actor, father, husband, and author. When Matthew was younger, his father instilled in him three principles for life - "Don't say can't," "love, don't hate," "tell the truth, don't lie" and he has carried these principles throughout his life.

Matthew McConaughey has acted in over 50 films and is the co-founder of the Just Keep Livin' Foundation alongside his wife, Camila. The two have three children and currently reside in Austin, Texas. Throughout his life, Matthew has learned that putting the energy into your family will produce results far greater than if you go it alone. He recalls his wife saying, "You go, we go" when they were deciding whether or not to have children. Since having three children, Matthew has been cultivating a closeness with his children that leaves a legacy for years to come.

In his book Greenlights, Matthew talks about how he wants his life to read like an unfiltered, unedited version of himself. His whole life has been dedicated to this persona of an actor that everyone is familiar with. Leaving a legacy is all about the raw, unedited moments of our lives; the ones where we're not perfect and we do make mistakes. These are the moments that define who we are, not who everyone else thinks we are.

27 Sep 2021The Power of the Word No with Chris Voss01:02:03

Chris Voss is the former chief hostage negotiator for the FBI, the CEO and founder of the Black Swan Group, and is the best-selling author of the book titled Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended On It. Chris Voss has over 25 years experience as a negotiator for the FBI. He has been featured in TIME Magazine, Business Insider, Entrepreneur, Inc. Magazine, Fast Company, Fortune, Washington Post, Success Magazine, Squawk Box, CNN, and ABC News.

Today, we are going to be talking about the psychology of communication and negotiation. We are also going to be talking about why you want the person you're negotiating with to say no first instead of yes. Chris Voss is going to share with us how to make people feel safe, protected, and in control, and ready to move forward when they are given the space to say "no." He tells us that without action, an agreement is useless.

Voss also teaches us the three yesses in agreement situations - commitmentconfirmation, and counterfeit. He's also going to go over the skill of tactical empathy. Tactical empathy is not sympathy, and it doesn't have to end in agreement. You being empathetic to someone in your life doesn't mean you agree with where they're at, nor does it equal sympathy. Voss also goes over how to use your voice tone and how people appreciate integrity despite the outcome of the discussion. He goes over the difference between someone telling you "you're right" versus "that's right." There is specific psychology that underlies the meaning in the tone of voice that Chris will be sharing with us today.

10 Dec 2021Re-igniting Your Life, Marriage & Family with Brian Pannuzzo00:53:00

On today’s episode I am interviewing Brian Pannuzzo, an Alliance member, fellow father and amazing individual. He's a certified nutrition coach who specializes in working with men whose professional success have cost them their health, marriages and their relationship with their family.

Brian went through a huge transition about six years ago. He was a Wall Street trader whose body and mind was completely broken. His marriage was on the brink of divorce and he thought all he had to do for years was provide for his family, and the rest should take care of it.

And then finally, six years ago, he woke up to a broken body, a broken marriage and a broken mindset. Everything on the outside appeared perfect on the surface, but underneath everything was falling apart. And throughout the years of tireless education and work, he's developed a system that allows career-driven men to recover and improve their personal relationships, marriage, family, and take control of their life.

We share how to balance the drive to provide for our families with being physically and emotionally present, and how to make undistracted time with our spouse and kids our number one priority.

Being a dad is the most important job we'll ever have. Let's make it epic!

10 Jul 2023Behind the Music: The Joys and Challenges of Marriage and Parenthood with Jake Scott01:01:26

Jake Scott is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. While at the university, he began to write and record music–launching his career. In fall of 2013, Jake Scott released his first, self-produced EP, “Of Life and Love and Longing”. Jake's passion for music was influenced by the sacrifices his father made to be actively involved in his life.

In this episode, we converse with Jake Scott about his latest single, journey as a husband and father, and the vital role of psychological safety in fostering children's mental well-being. Looking ahead, he shares his hopes for the milestones he aspires to celebrate; his children grown, and a marriage spanning more than two decades.

Jake opens up about marrying at 24, a decision often criticized as premature. Despite societal pressures, he stands by his choice, marking it as the best decision of his life. He expresses appreciation for his early marriage and emphasizes the merits of navigating life's challenges with a partner.

Further, Jake Scott compares societal perspectives on early marriage between his small town, where young marriages are common, and larger cities, where people tend to marry later.

As we conclude, this episode challenges societal norms on early marriage, accentuating the importance of personal choices and individual life paths. Jake's story is a testament to the uniqueness of everyone's journey towards happiness and fulfillment and the necessity of carving one's own path.

28 Nov 2019Surviving Suicide: A Dad’s Story00:49:28

Suicide is the number one killer among men aged 35-50. The World Health Organization reports that suicide represents half of all male violent deaths worldwide. Why are men at such risk and what can we do about it?

Men are more likely to go for desperate measures for several reasons. Our culture teaches men to internalize emotions and hide distress. At the same time, men tend to lose their close friends and support systems as they step into the role of a provider. They’re also reluctant to seek help when struggling with anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts.

The first step in doing something about suicide among men is raising awareness. Today, one of our Dad Edge Alliance Commanders courageously steps up to share his story. Nick Sotelo recounts his intense battle against rage, darkness, and suicide. He also tells us how to interrupt the negative scripts that run through our heads and what to do when overwhelmed with shame and hopelessness.

We never know what is going to send us or someone we care about down a dark road. This is an episode every dad should listen to for himself and any boy or man he knows.

07 Mar 20194 Elements of a Legendary Marriage Part 1—The Individual00:47:15

50% of marriages end in divorce. Out of the half that stay together, 1/3 report being happy, 1/3 are “happy enough” and the other 1/3 are miserable. We actively plan our businesses, goals, and finances, but most of us keep our marriage on auto-pilot and expect it to maintain itself. Communication breaks down, resentment builds, and the love slowly dies.

We are dedicating this month to designing our relationships with our spouses. Lance Salazar from Legendary Couples is back on the show. He has just released The Miracle Morning for Legendary Couples, which he coauthored with Hal Elrod. He breaks down the 4 Elements of a Legendary Marriage for us:

  1. The Individual
  2. The Partnership
  3. Becoming Friends
  4. Becoming Lovers

Today, we talk about the first element—the individual. In order to be the best partners and parents, we have to work on ourselves first.

11 Oct 2018How to Stop Obsessing Over Life’s Trivial Problems00:13:48

Our previous episode was called A Father's Last words and it was something TDE has never done before. Brian Froneyberger bravely and generously gave of the perspective of a father who was dying of cancer. It was a true privilege to listen to his wisdom about what really matters to a person who knows their time is running out. Tragically, he passed away between the recording and release of the show and his funeral service was held the very day his episode came out.

Having this conversation with Brian forced things into perspective. We often get frustrated with our kids. We get irritable with our spouses. We stress about work. Most feel like we're under a burden of obligations, but we have the choice to turn this around. Brian would give anything to be here having the problems we are facing right now.

It's not what happens to us, it's how we respond to it. We can be the calm in the middle of the storm if we don't obsess over life's trivial problems. When we're feeling stressed, depressed, or hopeless, we must ask ourselves, is worrying really worthy of our precious time? Wouldn't it be better to focus our emotions on what really matters in life? Shouldn't we be giving our energy to the things that we love instead of those we hate?

01 Sep 2023Nurturing Fatherhood and Self-Discovery After Childhood Adversity with Adam Prince01:11:31

Adam Prince is a member of Dad Edge Alliance. Some individuals, like Adam Prince, have experienced childhood trauma and instability that can have lasting effects on their lives. Adam opens up about his journey of overcoming these challenges and creating a better future for himself and his family.

In this episode, Adam Prince and Larry discuss the power of overcoming childhood trauma and making a conscious effort to change the game. They dive into the importance of breaking patterns and creating a different life despite challenges.  Adam describes his childhood as marked by instability. He moved between several different schools, houses, and apartments, even living in a motel for a period of time. This constant upheaval created a sense of uncertainty and unpredictability in his life.

This conversation between Adam and Larry highlights the importance of acknowledging and overcoming childhood trauma and instability. It is not enough to simply accept these experiences as part of one's identity. Instead, individuals must actively work towards healing, understanding, and breaking the patterns that have been ingrained in them. Adam's story is a powerful example of resilience and the capacity to overcome adversity. Despite the instability and trauma he experienced, he has chosen to take control of his life and create a different path.

Resilience and gratitude are two powerful qualities that can help individuals overcome adversity and find strength in the face of challenges. From a young age, Adam experienced the absence of his biological father, who left when he was little and only reappeared briefly when he was 12. This lack of a stable father figure could have easily left him feeling abandoned and resentful. However, Adam chooses not to dwell on the negative emotions associated with his father's departure. Instead, he focuses on the lessons he learned and the resilience he gained from navigating life without a consistent male presence.

Adam's ability to share his experiences with his own children is a testament to his resilience and gratitude. Rather than shielding them from the realities of his past, he chooses to have open and honest conversations with them. He does not shy away from discussing the hardships he endured but presents them in a matter-of-fact manner. This approach allows his children to see the strength and resilience that can emerge from adversity.

18 Aug 2023Empowering Resilient Daughters with Markus Kaulius01:15:32

Markus Kaulius is the founder of Magnum Nutraceuticals, works equally hard on his physique as he does on his business. The hard work and balance between these two endeavors, synergistically have led to success in both areas.

In this episode, Marcus shares his gratitude for being invited and expresses his admiration for Larry’s work. He talks about his family, including his wife, whom he considers the best for him, and his two daughters.

The first piece of advice Marcus offers is to not sweat the small stuff and to choose battles wisely. He emphasizes the importance of not getting caught up in minor disagreements or insignificant issues. Instead, he suggests focusing on the bigger picture and selecting battles that truly matter. Choosing battles wisely is an important aspect of maintaining healthy relationships, whether it be in a marriage, friendship, or any other type of connection.

Creating lifelong memories through experiences is a powerful way to strengthen the bond between parents and children. In today's fast-paced and technology-driven world, it is easy for parents and children to become disconnected from each other. One of the key benefits of creating lifelong memories through experiences is the opportunity for quality one-on-one time.

The ability to explain decisions and involve children in the decision-making process is crucial for their development. By communicating effectively, parents can promote critical thinking skills, empower their children, and prepare them for adulthood.

Another piece of advice to take away from today's podcast is, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Alex gives us very sound advice on why working together will bring you much more success and meaningful relationships than working alone.

FREE RESOURCE – 21 Days to an Extraordinary Marriage

25 Feb 2019Debrief to Win with former Top Gun Instructor Robert “Cujo” Teschner01:13:29

Who knows how to rapidly assess, respond, and adapt under extreme pressure better than a Top Gun fighter pilot? Today we are super-psyched to have Top Gun instructor Robert “Cujo” Teschner on the show! He’s releasing his book called Debrief to Win: How High-Performing Leaders Practice Accountable Leadership. He is also a husband, a father of five children, and a cancer survivor.

You don’t get to Cujo’s level without doing the work and prepping yourself to win at all costs. He reveals that even though his military career was taking off, he was failing in other dimensions of his life. One day he realized that if he applied his elite training to his health and family, he would dominate across the board.

Listen to his Debrief to Win system to set yourself up for a successful mission no matter what the dogfight of life throws at you.
